The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise. STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it. STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. Donated by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department, these containers were initially used as patient overflow facilities during the COVID-19 surge in Macon. The 40-unit community, built in just 60 days at a cost of $125,000 per unit, aims to address homelessness and connect vulnerable populations with resources. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens praised the project as an innovative solution for rapid-affordable housing. The Forsyth Street site will offer permanent housing and wrap-around services, with residents expected to move in next month. The mayor plans to expand similar shipping container communities across the city to combat homelessness. STORY 5: Estate of now-infamous Murdaugh family goes up for action The South Carolina estate of the notorious Murdaugh family, known as the Moselle Estate, is going up for auction with a minimum bid of $1.1 million. The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise. STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it. STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. Alex Murdaugh, the former resident, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is currently appealing his sentence. The property has changed hands several times since the crime. Proceeds from the initial sale went toward legal fees, the surviving son, a local bank, and victims of a 2019 boat crash linked to the family. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15. STORY 5: Michigan coronation is most-watched title game in four years The Michigan-Washington College Football Playoff National Championship game marked a four-year high in ratings and viewership. Averaging a 12.3 rating and 25.05 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, the game saw a 41% increase in ratings and a 45% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. The tech giant is said to be holding ongoing discussions with officials. No concrete plans have been made, but if the effort is successful, it will expand Apple's footprint in the country. Apple announced earlier this year it had begun assembling its flagship iPhone 14 in India, where it was already producing its older models. Microsoft has announced a price hike for its software in India. Due to currency fluctuations, Microsoft India is announcing Indian rupee pricelist changes to harmonize its prices for commercial on-premises software and online services between India and the Asian region, effective February 1, 2023, the company said in a post on its website. Starting Feb. 1, 2023, Indian rupee prices for commercial on-premises software will increase by 4.5 percent, online services will increase by 9 percent, and Windows GGWA (get genuine windows agreement) will increase by 11 percent to match prevailing prices in US dollar terms in Asia, the company said. The new prices will show up starting Feb. 1, 2023, if you're looking to buy a Microsoft 365 subscription, for example. This announcement does not cover Microsoft's hardware products, according to the company. Salesforce is seeing some top-level exits. Yesterday, the company announced the departure of Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, who joined Salesforce last year as part of its biggest acquisition. The company's co-CEO Bret Taylor, who orchestrated the Slack deal, is also leaving, a year after getting promoted to share the top job with founder Marc Benioff, CNBC reports. In the three trading days since Taylor announced his departure, alongside Salesforce's third-quarter earnings report, the company's stock has had two of its three worst days of the year, losing 8.3 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively, CNBC notes. Salesforce has now lost 47 percent of its value for the year, compared with the Nasdaq's 28 percent drop, and is trading at its lowest since March 2020, the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to CNBC. HealthKart, a nutrition supplements provider, has raised $135 million in series H funding, to expand overseas and for acquisitions, TechCrunch reports. The funding was concluded last month and took the 11-year-old Gurugram company's total funding to $224 million, according to private markets intelligence provider Tracxn, and investors include Temasek, A91 Partners and Kae Capital. This week, Mississippi is experiencing unprecedented freezing conditions resulting from ice storms that blasted through the U.S. South. In addition to being unaccustomed to the freezing rain, ice, and snow, thousands of Mississippians suffering rolling blackouts and power outages, unheated homes and water shutoffs, have been left to fend for themselves. Starting Feb 15, at least 250,000 Mississippians have lost power at some point during the week; counties in the southwest to east central Mississippi are primarily impacted. About 110,000 people were still without power on Feb. 19 in the morning. Almost all of the residents of the state’s capital city, Jackson, are without water. City officials have reported lacking the necessary chemicals to treat the water, and that the distribution system is overwhelmed. Many of those impacted are trapped in their homes, unable to travel to replenish supplies, as most Mississippians do not have experience driving on ice-covered roads. As in other impacted states, in Mississippi too there are reports of buildings flooding from frozen water pipes bursting. There are all kinds of arguments, many of them pretty unproductive. Either nobody listens, or nobody wins, or you go around in circles, or you bring up old baggage that should’ve stayed in storage.But the best arguments, and the ones I like to have, are the ones that make me think differently. They help inform my opinions, or challenge them. I’ve talked to people from all points on the political spectrum, and I’ve heard a lot of “the other side doesn’t get it,” and “the other side is evil.”In my opinion, none of this productive.I want people to hear one another out, before writing them off. I think respectful, civil debate makes us all smarter. And I think for democracy to work, we need to listen, especially when we don’t agree.Things on the program might get awkward, and that’s the whole point. In this episode, Anna Baydakova and Danny Nelson discuss North Korea reportedly stealing your crypto to create nuclear weapons, Tesla rattling markets at an opportune time and Nigeria trying to ban crypto. Starting Feb. 12, in the Chinese calendar, we are in the year of the ox, or bull; at least for now, things are looking quite bullish for crypto. Usually, Chinese users would massively sell bitcoin ahead of the New Year but the current rally is being mostly driven by institutions, not retail buyers in Asia. So it looks like the “To the Moon” show must go on!A United Nations expert panel said North Korea used the money it extorted by cyber attacks to fund nuclear weapons development. The panel said that according to its investigations, North Korean regime-linked hackers worked all through 2020 and made the money now funding weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs. According to Chainalysis, the hackers used DeFi infrastructure, over-the-counter brokers and mixers to sell their crypto. So will we end up with a bit of North Korean hacker crypto one day? Tesla hyped the bitcoin market right around the time some bad news came out of China. In February, Tesla's annual report to the Securities and Exchange Commission included the news the company put an aggregate of $1.5 billion into bitcoin. Just before that filing several Chinese government agencies publicly questioned Tesla cars' quality and safety. Coincidence?Nigeria is trying to curb crypto adoption, but that is not so easy. In early February, the country's central bank sent a letter to financial institutions ordering them to shut down all bank accounts associated with cryptocurrency trading platforms. Result: Binance halted deposits in Nigeria. As a result, Nigerians turned to peer-to-peer trading platforms. Is this actually good for crypto adoption? In this episode, Anna Baydakova and Danny Nelson discuss North Korea reportedly stealing your crypto to create nuclear weapons, Tesla rattling markets at an opportune time and Nigeria trying to ban crypto. Starting Feb. 12, in the Chinese calendar, we are in the year of the ox, or bull; at least for now, things are looking quite bullish for crypto. Usually, Chinese users would massively sell bitcoin ahead of the New Year but the current rally is being mostly driven by institutions, not retail buyers in Asia. So it looks like the “To the Moon” show must go on!A United Nations expert panel said North Korea used the money it extorted by cyber attacks to fund nuclear weapons development. The panel said that according to its investigations, North Korean regime-linked hackers worked all through 2020 and made the money now funding weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs. According to Chainalysis, the hackers used DeFi infrastructure, over-the-counter brokers and mixers to sell their crypto. So will we end up with a bit of North Korean hacker crypto one day? Tesla hyped the bitcoin market right around the time some bad news came out of China. In February, Tesla’s annual report to the Securities and Exchange Commission included the news the company put an aggregate of $1.5 billion into bitcoin. Just before that filing several Chinese government agencies publicly questioned Tesla cars’ quality and safety. Coincidence?Nigeria is trying to curb crypto adoption, but that is not so easy. In early February, the country’s central bank sent a letter to financial institutions ordering them to shut down all bank accounts associated with cryptocurrency trading platforms. Result: Binance halted deposits in Nigeria. As a result, Nigerians turned to peer-to-peer trading platforms. Is this actually good for crypto adoption? I also discuss my understanding of timelines and how there really is no such thing as the wrong choice, but instead an opportunity for growth and yet more choices. As more of us shift our energies from the third dimension to the fourth and fifth, we will begin to allow this awareness to be integrating in more of the collective. In all of our self-healing work, we are also healing our families, loved ones, lineage, and even past and future aspects of ourselves. We are kicking off a new series this month all about marriage and relationships, and I could not be more excited to have our friends Nick and Cristen Lawson on the show! They are in our life group at church and just two people Emily and I do life with. They are newlyweds — they got married in October — so I loved hearing the perspective of such a young married couple. Don't be fooled by that, though, because they brought some serious wisdom that I think we all can use. I love how intentional they are with their time together. They only have a TV in the guest room and rarely watch it and never really spend time on their phones when they're together. They've got several other little things they do to make sure they stay intentional with their time while still allowing for spontaneity. They're also an interracial couple, and that's such a needed perspective for all of us to hear right now. I've been feeling called to realign myself physically and energetically over the last week and feel like we might all benefit from some help in that regard. Turns out he did tell Johnny Ringo he was a huckleberry when he tried to step in for Wyatt Earp in a showdown. Val Kilmer's performance may have been much more accurate than I ever realized. John Henry Holiday, better known as Doc Holliday, was a Wild Western anomaly. He was a gambler, drunk, a gunslinger, possibly even a thief - BUT - he was also an educated Southern dentist raised by well-to-do plantation owners. He was a complicated and fascinating man who we only know through the descriptions of those who knew him, some of whom liked him and admired him and others who despised and reviled him. PRAYER AND MEDICATION! The wonderful old soul almost got it right. He meant to say that a Christian needed prayer and meditation. But it came out as prayer and medication! Or maybe he got it about right after all. I’ve just come from the hospital. The doctors did their best with medicine. We prayed together for healing grace. Prayer and medication! Not either-or but both-and. Someone else put it like this: Work like it all depends on you, but pray like it all depends on God. Not either-or but both-and. But you do have to get the order right. You can do more than pray, but you can’t do more until you pray. We want to become more intentional about prayer in our church. So we are taking three simple steps to start this year. I have asked a small group of people to be a Pastor’s Prayer Shield for me. They are taking it as their special charge to pray God’s protection and wisdom for their Sr. Pastor. Susan Leonard will be leading a class on “Learning to Pray Better Together” starting Feb. 6 at 3:00 PM. Sign up. We need godly intercessors as our front-line spiritual warriors.
