Send us a textAs states across the nation continue to target transgender children, some families flee for safety and refuge. Some families choose to be as invisible as possible for their safety, and we support and celebrate that. But other families are choosing to plant their feet and fight back. Special Guest: Amber BriggleAmber Briggle (she/they) is a self-described “mama bear” of a transgender teen in Texas. Amber and her family were investigated by the Texas Department of Family Protective Services for “child abuse” in 2022 after TX Governor Greg Abbott directed the agency to open such cases against families like theirs. Consequently, Amber and her husband, Adam, sued Governor Abbott and are named as co-plaintiffs in PFLAG v Abbott, which seeks to permanently halt these types of investigations.Amber is a founding member and the former national co-chair of the Human Rights Campaign's “Parents for Transgender Equality Council”, and has previously been nominated by the Dallas Morning News as “Texan of the Year”. For decades, filmmakers worldwide have been remaking Hollywood movies in colorful ways. They've chronicled a singing and dancing Hannibal Lecter in India, star-crossed lovers aboard the doomed Nigerian ship Titanic, a Japanese expedition to the planet of the apes, and an uncivil war in Turkey between Captain America and a mobbed-up Spider-Man. Most of these films were low budget and many were unauthorized, but all of them were fantastic-and lately have begun to resurface thanks to cherry-picked YouTube clips. But why and how were they made in the first place? This book tells the little-known stories of the wily filmmakers who made an Italian 007 flick by casting Sean Connery's tradesman brother, produced a Turkish space opera by stealing a print of Star Wars for its effects footage, and transported a full-fledged Terminator to the present day-not from a post-apocalyptic future, but from the vibrant mythology of Indonesia(!)Their stories reveal more than mere imitations; they demonstrate the fascinating ways ideas evolve as they cross borders. Here's a trailer for the book:Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGz4v5rd-rY&list=PLKNflN6_FlmELuj8JbH0eq9DE0sFiX7tv&index=34 Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

*) Norway, Ireland and Spain recognise Palestine as a state Norway, Ireland and Spain have recognised the Palestinian state. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris called it “a historic and important day” and said the move to recognise the State of Palestine was coordinated with Spain and Norway. Several European Union countries have in the past weeks indicated that they plan to make the recognition official, arguing a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region. The efforts come as a mounting death toll from Israel's war on Gaza prompts calls globally for a ceasefire and Palestinian recognition. *) Tens of thousands gather for Raisi's funeral in Tehran Tens of thousands of Iranians have flocked to the streets of Tehran to join the funeral processions of president Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage, who died in a helicopter crash. In the centre of the city, people holding portraits of Raisi gathered in and around the University of Tehran, where Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, is due to lead prayers for Raisi and his companions, including foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian. *) Blinken unsure Israel will make compromises for Saudi normalisation deal US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was unsure whether Israel was ready to make compromises to reach a deal to normalise relations with Saudi Arabia, notably on a pathway to an independent state of Palestine. His frank assessment came after Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden's national security advisor, visited both countries and briefed the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the “potential” of a possible deal. Small business can "court" and win big business if they play to their strengths: responsiveness, fresh ideas, flexibility, and more. My guest Cynthia Kay is the dynamo behind Cynthia Kay and Company, a powerhouse in media production crafting top-tier communications for a diverse clientele, from Fortune Global 100 titans to spirited small businesses. Cynthia's been hailed as one of West Michigan's 50 Most Influential Women on multiple occasions, a testament to her unwavering commitment to excellence. She's penned enlightening reads like "Small Business for Big Thinkers" and "Stop Wishing. Stop Whining. Start Leading." You'll catch her wisdom gracing the pages of Entrepreneur.com and even making waves on NPR. Oh, and did I mention she's testified before the House Committee on Small Business?
