This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief heads to one of the most cherished stops on his whiskey journey—Leiper's Fork Distillery—a place where friendship has aged into family and the spirits are as bold as the stories behind them. He sits down with the powerhouse herself, Kendra Anderson, the head distiller whose path began behind the bar mixing cocktails and now leads the charge in the stillhouse. Her rise from mash cook to master of the barrel is a testament to grit, passion, and unshakable dedication. In the first half of the episode, Kendra and the big man pour a glass of Revenue's Reserve—a heartfelt tribute to Samuel Claybrook Locke, a Federal Revenue Officer tragically killed in 1925 in Franklin, Tennessee. This 3-barrel blend of 7- and 8-year-old Tennessee Whiskey hits with a mash bill of 70% corn, 15% rye, and 15% malted barley. Clocking in at 100 proof, it drinks like a fire-tempered blade—bold, spicy, and unforgettable. But then comes the moment that stops time. Kendra breaks out a honey cask wheated bourbon—a Leiper's Fork masterpiece with a mash bill of 70% corn, 15% wheat, and 15% malted barley. Layered with a honey bill that reads like Southern poetry—29% willow, 25% sweet clover, 14% blackberry, and 8% sumac—this bourbon sings with nostalgic notes of Honey Comb and Honey Smacks cereal, warming the soul with every sip. Leiper's Fork isn't just a distillery—it's a beacon of Southern hospitality, craftsmanship, and character. So raise your glass and buckle in—because this ride with Big Chief is one soaked in spirit, soul, and the sweet burn of tradition. This is The Whiskey Trip. Cheers, y'all.

One of Lucretia's favorite epithets is "that's the dumbest idea," so we decided to put her on the spot and demand a list of "Lucretia's Top Five Dumbest Ideas" for this episode, but not before a thorough dissection of the issues involved with Thursday's Supreme Court oral argument about the conjunction of birthright citizenship and the plague of nationwide injunctions against executive branch actions by a single judge out in the hinterlands somewhere. You can tell the New York Times is worried, because they ran a major feature on Thursday about how the thesis that birthright citizenship might not have a solid foundation in the 14th Amendment is a "fringe theory." And yet here we are. Listen in for a reference to how this Supreme Court issue resembles the rebel alliance against the Evil Empire in Star Wars.Next week: John Yoo's five axioms of Supreme Court jurisprudence. A Weirdly Timed Episode... Let's get the awkwardness out of the way - I had the pleasure of interviewing Mel Maddox, now-former Master Blender for Old Elk, on May 2nd. A few days later, it was announced that Old Elk had been acquired by Middle West Spirits (a previous guest!) and, subsequently, all workings at their Fort Collins, Colorado location were ceasing. This included laying off all production staff, including Mel. This was still a wonderful conversation in which I learned about Old Elk, but my favorite part was learning more about Mel. The way she looks at whiskey when creating a blend is synesthetic, hard to describe to those who haven't experienced what color something tastes like or the what shape a mashbill makes in your mind. It's a beautiful talent (my version is seeing sounds in color) that is at once intangible and singular. Long story short...I don't know what the next steps are for Old Elk, or for Mel, but I wish them both the best. I think Old Elk was putting out the best stuff it ever had, and clearly her talents were on full display in blending and finishing. We as whiskey enthusiasts can only hope her next role continues to rely on those talents. Thank you to Mel for entering the Whiskey Ring! Send us a textThe economics of whiskey pricing involves numerous factors that determine why bourbon costs what it does, from physical aspects of aging to market demands and consumer preferences.• Quality and quantity are fundamental considerations in whiskey pricing• Age significantly impacts cost due to taxes, warehouse space, and liquid loss through evaporation• Temperature fluctuations affect yield as cold weather expands barrels pushing liquid outward while heat contracts wood drawing whiskey into staves• Barrel strength whiskeys command higher prices because they aren't diluted, resulting in fewer bottles from the same amount of aged spirit• Many distilleries have increased prices to capture value that was previously going to secondary market resellers• Despite fears of a "bourbon glut," most established distilleries report strong sales with new operations continuing to open• American whiskey prices have generally remained stable or decreased slightly over recent months according to store comparison research• Family-owned operations like Old Louisville Whiskey Company focus on quality over quantity• The Old Louisville 17-year bourbon (141 proof) scored a perfect 18/18 on the tasting scale• Premium whiskeys with high price tags often accurately reflect the investment, time, expertise and limited quantity involvedJoin us for our upcoming bus tour where we'll be visiting Old Louisville Whiskey Company and meeting Amin Caroud in person. The mysterious world of whiskey pricing unfolds as we explore the complex economics behind what makes your favorite bourbon cost $30 or $300. Beyond marketing hype, we reveal the genuine factors distilleries consider when setting prices in today's competitive spirits landscape.Every drop of aged whiskey comes with hidden costs. When distilleries age spirit for extended periods, they're making a significant investment – paying yearly taxes, managing warehouse space, and accepting substantial liquid loss. A 53-gallon barrel might yield only 20 gallons after 15 years due to the "angel's share" and wood absorption. Temperature fluctuations further complicate matters, as cold weather expands barrels pushing liquid outward, while heat contracts wood drawing whiskey deeper into staves, affecting both flavor development and final yield. The bourbon market has evolved dramatically in recent years. Despite fears of a "bourbon glut," most established distilleries report strong sales with new operations continuing to open throughout Kentucky. Our price comparison research at local stores confirmed American whiskey prices have generally remained stable or even decreased slightly, contradicting inflation concerns. Meanwhile, premium offerings have seen strategic price increases as distilleries recapture value previously lost to secondary markets – Russell's Reserve 13 Year jumped from $80 to $190 in just three releases. The episode culminates with a spectacular tasting of Old Louisville Whiskey Company's 17-year bourbon bottled at a hazmat-level 141 proof. This family-owned operation exemplifies the passion-driven side of the industry, where Amine and Beth Karaoud's commitment to quality over quantity produces truly exceptional whiskeys. The expression earns a perfect 18/18 score, with particular praise for its "cinnamon toast crunch" nose, thick viscosity, and maple syrup flavors balanced with well-integrated oak.Wh If You Have Gohsts Add for SOFLSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

Who's ready for another round? Having now seen The Witcher's second animated movie, we thought it would be fun to revisit its first one, 2021's Nightmare of the Wolf—and we brought new viewer Producer Sean along for the ride! How does this Vesemir-starring prequel hold up four years and two show seasons later? Does it still feel like The Witcher now that we've gotten a better feel for the franchise? And what's up with Geralt's hair? (Sadly, we don't yet have an answer for that last one.) Plus, to accompany this second viewing, Sean's made an all-new whiskey pairing…with a twist. Clean W by CleanCo is the first non-alcoholic whiskey we've sampled on the podcast, though if you think going the zero-proof route means we're any less unhinged, think again. Laphroaig 10 Scotch Whisky Review – Is This the King of Peated Scotch?
(To be read in a dramatic voice) No one would have believed... ... that a tale so vast- of death, alien destruction, heat rays, Phil Lynott, and the Moody Blues- could be told through orchestral prog rock, synths, and frying pans. Yet today, Frizz and Bob pop open Quest's End Paladin Whiskey & Ardbeg Uigedal Scotch to bring you PART ONE of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds- a British sci-fi marvel that, for decades, has been misunderstood and mostly unseen by the American eye. In this first chapter, we set the stage: The backstory. The architects of the sound. The players of this curious sonic war. The chances of you missing this are a million to one, they said. Yet, here you are. Next week... the invasion begins.
Geese, Barley, and Peat At The First New Islay Distillery in 124 Years In this brand new episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with James Wills, son of founder Anthony Wills and a worldwide face of Kilchoman Distillery on Islay. This episode marks a significant milestone as it is my first interview with an Islay distillery (I was surprised too!), and I was excited to delve into the unique aspects of Kilchoman and the challenges of distilling on this iconic island. We start off where any good whisky podcast starts: with geese. Yes, geese. They're kind of a big deal there. I'm not known for going with the grain (yeah I said it) so why not there. Kilchoman has a lot more going for it, though, as it enters its 20th year in 2025. As the first new Islay distillery in 124 years, Kilchoman needed to be different. They couldn't just be peaty, they had to be unique - and thus they became the first farm-to-glass distillery on the island. We chat about all the nerdy stuff you'd expect, like barley experimentation and yeast and fermentation, plus a dive into how their bourbon barrel sourcing and full-term maturation (note: not finishing!) work. There's also plenty to explore about the "whys" and inflection points in the distillery's two-decade evolution. I've been wanting to have Kilchoman on for two years, and I'm thrilled to finally make that happen for the podcast and for you, the listeners and supporters. This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief takes the backseat and lets the Bottled-in-Bond Professor himself, Bernie Lubbers, steer us through a masterclass in American whiskey history. Known for his relentless advocacy, storytelling talent, and undying love for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, Bernie has been the face of bonded whiskey for decades—especially with iconic brands like Henry McKenna 10-Year and Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. As Bernie takes a step back as National Brand Ambassador for Heaven Hill Distillery, we raise a glass to a man who has poured his heart into preserving one of whiskey's greatest legacies. In this episode, Bernie dives deep into: • The history and significance of the Bottled-in-Bond Act • How he earned the nickname “The Bottled-in-Bond Professor” • The evolution of Heaven Hill's bonded lineup • His personal whiskey journey—from the stage to the rickhouse • Why Bottled-in-Bond still matters in today's whiskey world And yes, we sip… Big Chief and Bernie share few special pours that helped shape Bernie's career.
