534: Does the Grain Matter? Whiskey Mysteries and 80/20 Politics

In this episode of Beer and Conversation with Pigweed and Crowhill, we crack open a local amber lager and dive into a deceptively simple question about whiskey: If all distilled spirits come out clear, does it really matter what grain you start with?Crowhill shares a long-standing curiosity about the flavor differences in whiskey and what actually survives the distillation process. Pigweed joins the inquiry with wit and skepticism as we challenge the assumptions behind grain bills, barrels, and backwoods bourbon. Then we pivot—hard—into politics, revisiting the "80/20 Democrats" idea: why party leaders consistently take unpopular stances on key issues. Listener "White Knight" writes in with more baffling examples, from taxpayer-funded Medicare for illegal immigrants to abortion up to birth. It's sharp, opinionated, and unapologetically provocative.Grab a beer, pour some whiskey (if you dare), and join us for another episode of good drinks and unfiltered conversation.

Um, I'm really, really sorry about your loss. Well, I guess you and I have a mutual understanding club going on because I- I get you too. And, uh, thank you for the facts about yourself. I like the way that you described blue. I think I know exactly what color you mean and yeah, that's a good one. And I hope whatever unknown you were heading into is ultimately really, really good. No matter how different it is. And in the spirit of a trade for a trade, um, let's see, something you might not know about me already. I love Charleston Chews. I think they're the best candy. They're simple. They're perfect. They're so big, you know? You're not getting a candy bar that's...you're gonna eat in three bites. I haven't had a Charleston Chew in a while, but I love them. I love the smell of dirt. Like, The soil that you can smell on a farm, that kind of, like, slightly metallic, slightly manure-y smell? Reminds me of driving with the windows down as a kid. And I once got concussed falling out of a tree. And you might think, oh, well, you know, kids climb up trees all the time and get injured. But, um, I was seventeen So, a little bit more embarrassing. But thanks, Passerine, for sharing a bit about you. The digital landscape is shifting beneath our feet, and nowhere is this more evident than in the migration from X to Blue Sky. Our latest episode dives deep into this phenomenon while comparing it to another "killer" debate - Smoke Eye Barrel Proof versus George T. Stag bourbon. With Blue Sky reaching 32 million users against X's 570 million, raw numbers don't tell the full story. At Emerald City Comic Con, a major Pacific Northwest event drawing nearly 100,000 attendees, we witnessed something remarkable - exhibitors and attendees actively avoiding X handles and exclusively requesting Blue Sky accounts. This grassroots movement suggests something profound is happening in how people connect online. But what's driving this shift? While initially following political divides with left-leaning users gravitating toward Blue Sky, the migration is evolving as scientists and others seeking accurate information join the platform. Blue Sky appears to be recapturing the spirit of early Twitter - before excessive content controls but with enough moderation to maintain information integrity. With Instagram-like features already available (though still lacking streaming capabilities), Blue Sky is positioning itself as a return to social media's more functional past. Will Blue Sky truly become the X-killer? Like our whiskey comparison (where George T. Stag remains superior despite Smoke Eye's "killer" marketing), the answer lies in user preference and adoption. Major sports organizations still exclusively share roster information on X, forcing fans to maintain a presence there. But as Blue Sky continues developing features and attracting diverse users, we may be entering an era of specialized platforms serving different needs - a healthier digital ecosystem where meaningful choices exist rather than one-size-fits-all environments. What's your experience with Blue Sky? Have you made the switch or are you waiting to see how the platform evolves? Share your thoughts and join us next time for another exploration of technology's impact on our connected lives.Support the show

Chris Ashford of What Records? discusses releasing the first LA punk single "Forming" by the Germs, rarities, tapes, memories of Darby Crash and early punk scene stories. Topics Include: Chris Ashford founded What Records? and knew Germs members George (Pat Smear) and Paul (Darby Crash) He worked in record stores through high school and was fascinated by record labels Chris decided to start a label while his friends formed the Germs band He had no formal education about making records, learned from Richard Fuse at Rhino "Forming" was recorded in a garage with two-track deck and two microphones The single had multiple takes but most were erased years ago B-side used cassette recording from Germs' Cheech & Chong "Up in Smoke" audition Master tape for "Forming" is missing, possibly in Canada, but Chris owns rights Cheech & Chong footage shows Germs performing "Sexboy" - same version as B-side They kept the cassette source secret initially to avoid potential lawsuits Lou Adler excluded Germs from movie because audiences wouldn't believe they were real Chris missed the "Up in Smoke" taping because he had to work his day job He financed all What Records releases including "Forming" himself Black rectangle on sleeve was intentionally ambiguous, meant as tongue-in-cheek band photo Address on record was Chris's parents' house where he lived He quickly moved to P.O. Box and removed address to protect his mother First pressing had wrong labels on wrong sides due to Monarch pressing plant error About 1,000 copies were made, most of original pressing was destroyed 600-700 defective records were thrown down hill as frisbees for fun None of them expected anything significant to happen with the record "Forming" was technically the first independent DIY punk single from Los Angeles The record served as legitimizing calling card for the Germs Darby Crash was gifted lyricist despite his troubled background and demons Chris received Germs burn from Michelle Ghaffari at the Whiskey without warning Germs burns became insider thing in summer 1977, wider trend came later Darby never fully matured, died at 22 before becoming complete person Germs often performed as chaotic train wreck, unlike disciplined bands like Stooges Darby had difficult childhood and family problems that created his demons David Bowie was Darby's favorite outlet, influenced his dreamy/nihilistic worldview Chris saw potential for Darby to become writer beyond just being lyricist Extended and high resolution version of this podcast is available at: www.Patreon.com/VinylGuide Listen on Apple: https://apple.co/2Y6ORU0 Listen on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/36qhlc8

    The Bourbon Life

Saddle up, whiskey lovers—this episode of The Whiskey Trip takes us deep into bourbon country with a Texas twist. Big Chief rolls into The Rackhouse in The Colony, Texas, where the sunsets paint the sky in firelight, the steaks hit the grill with a sizzle that sings, and the whiskey flows like a backcountry river after spring rain. Here, we meet the heartbeat of the place—Rob and Amy Jones, a husband-and-wife duo who've built more than a bar. They've built a destination. A whiskey sanctuary. A spot where stories are shared, glasses are raised, and strangers become kin. First Pour: Old Forester King Ranch They start the show with a nod to Texas grit and cowboy legacy—Old Forester King Ranch. Mesquite charcoal-filtered, this pour is bold as a bull ride and smooth as a fiddle tune. Sweet dark chocolate and tobacco saddle up with leather and toasted oak, finishing long and strong. It's a tribute to the ranchers who work the land, raise the beef, and keep the Lone Star proud. Second Pour: Garrison Brothers BALMORHEA In the second half, Big Chief and the Joneses uncork a Texas legend—Garrison Brothers Balmorhea. Double-oaked and damn near divine, this whiskey is rich, velvety, and unapologetically Texan. Think caramel, honey, toasted pecans, and a kiss of vanilla. Big Chief calls it “bourbon candy in a bottle”—and he ain't wrong. Why This Ain't Just Another Bar The Rackhouse isn't just a stop along the trail—it's the whole journey. With live blues drifting over the lake, a menu full of steaks seared to cowboy perfection, and a bourbon list that reads like a love letter to America's native spirit, this place feeds more than your appetite. It feeds your soul. Because like a good pour of whiskey, food made with love has a way of grounding you, of slowing down time. It brings people together around the fire, just like the stories we tell—and the ones we drink to. So pour a glass, cut into that steak, and join Big Chief on another unforgettable ride. This is The Whiskey Trip—and this leg of the journey is one hell of a ride.

    Whiskey Lore

Originally meant to be my 63rd Whiskey Flight podcast, I had no idea what a historical goldmine I was stumbling into when I reached out to Cindy and Andy Sudderth of R.M. Rose Co Distillery. In this conversation, Andy Sudderth shares not only his own family's legacy in distilling, but also what he's learned about the historic RM Rose Distillery. We'll learn about Rufus Rose, a Connecticut Yankee who joined the fight with the Confederacy, the techniques used his in whiskey production, and the challenges faced the company faced with Prohibition. It's a rich history that not only covers Georgia, it seeps into my Lost History of Tennessee Whiskey book's history, as well as the history of a modern Kentucky distillery. Andy's passion for history and distilling shines through as he recounts the rich narrative behind RM Rose and its revival. We'll delve into the intricate world of distillation, exploring various techniques, the historical significance of the RM Rose distillery, and the impact of Prohibition on the whiskey industry. We also discuss the legacy of moonshine in Dawsonville, Georgia, and the cultural connections tied to one of their moonshines inspired by a classic 1970s film. We'll also cover details about the modern distillery and the new satellite locations coming online. And catch an extra 10 minutes of interview, commercial-free as a member of patreon.com/whiskeylore.

Send us a textPour yourself a shot and settle in for an entertaining journey through Dodge City lore and fine spirits! Our debut episode of "Whiskey and Westerns on Wednesday" brings together host Mike King and Dodge City historian Brad Smalley to explore frontier legends while sampling Ardbeg 10, a smoky Islay scotch. We kick things off by shattering a persistent Wild West myth about the origin of "shot" glasses. Despite romantic notions of cowboys trading bullets for whiskey, historical records reveal that in 1870s Dodge City, a shot cost about 25 cents—enough to buy nearly ten bullets. When George Hoover established the first saloon in what would become Dodge, he dispensed whiskey by the ladle for two bits, likely delivering a more generous pour than today's standard shot. The heart of our episode revolves around Luke McGlue, Dodge City's most infamous resident who never actually existed. This entirely fictional character served as the perfect scapegoat for the town's practical jokers, including legendary figures like Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp. When pranks were pulled and someone needed to take the blame, Luke McGlue became the untraceable culprit, preventing potential violence in a town where everyone carried guns.We share the hilarious tale of Dr. Meredith, a traveling "medical man" who came to deliver a lecture on "private diseases" after corresponding with the nonexistent Luke. What followed was an elaborately orchestrated practical joke featuring staged disruptions, gunfire that extinguished the saloon's lamps, and ultimately a terrified doctor fleeing town on the first train out.Throughout our storytelling, we appreciate the complex flavors of Ardbeg 10, discussing how peat imparts its distinctive smoky character during the whiskey-making process and identifying flavor notes from beeswax to black pepper.Subscribe to our podcast for weekly episodes where we'll continue exploring legendary characters, historical tales, and fine spirits from the American frontier. In this globe-trotting episode of The Bourbon Road, hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter are joined once again by Rob Carter, one-third of the “Maltmigos,” for a single malt tasting session that travels from the Himalayas to the Highlands. Though Amzie couldn't make the show this time, the malt trio powers forward from their tasting post at The Corner Rickhouse in Frankfort, Kentucky. The spotlight this episode is on Royal Tiger Single Malt, a double-cask expression from Ocean King Distillers in Goa, India. Distilled by Craig Enriques, this single malt is made from six-row Himalayan barley and aged first in new ex-bourbon casks before being re-casked for a second maturation. The result? A spirit layered with creamy vanilla, overripe pear, honey-drizzled bread, and a whisper of spice from the oak—delightfully balanced and surprisingly sweet for fans of traditional single malt. Jim, Todd, and Rob dig into the expression's structure, remarking on its buttercream and vanilla-laced nose, light body, and smooth, sweet finish. They note that while the whiskey skews a little sweeter than their usual fare, it offers a refreshing break from the bolder, high-proof bourbons they typically favor. For a $49 bottle, the consensus was unanimous: this Indian single malt punches well above its weight. Other expressions tasted during the show are Ice Cream from Glenmorangie, Loch Lemond and Glen Scotia. As they sip, the conversation ranges from distilling techniques to global whiskey culture. The team highlights India's rapidly growing single malt scene and how regional water sources, climate, and local grain are contributing to distinct profiles that rival the best from Scotland or the U.S. They also muse about the potential for single malt cream liqueurs and whether peated versions could offer a new kind of dessert dram. Beyond the glass, the hosts discuss upcoming barrel picks in western Kentucky, share travel plans to Fort Campbell and Clarksville, and reflect on the value of tasting outside your comfort zone. For Rob, this was a first-time single malt deep dive; for listeners, it's a lesson in palate exploration, regional nuance, and just plain good company. So whether you're a bourbon loyalist or a curious malthead, this episode is an open invitation to explore a world of flavor—no passport required. This is Passerine calling back to Whiskey. You got the name right. I caught your response a little late, honestly just pure luck that I went to check my radio. I couldn't believe it when I heard you reading out my message. Felt a bit like a dream. As someone who's lost people, I know how much apologies mean little. So, I'll just say I get it. For me, I recently lost a family member, and we were going through their clothes, trying to figure out what to keep and what to give away. It's amazing how much of someone you can find in their clothes, the colours they picked out, the brands they stick to. My person, she loved colour and animals. She volunteered with a whole bunch of different organisations and kept the polo shirts from each one. It was wonderful. And it hurt like hell, because I'd see a jacket I remembered her wearing, and I realised she'd never wear it again. She'd never add another patch to her jacket covered in all the places she'd went. And thinking about losing her just makes me think of all the people you stand to lose in life. Made me terrified about all the clothes and possessions I was going to have to go through in my life, all the memories I was going to have to fold and put into a box, like it was that easy,To cut my ramble short, I understand you. And you are always welcome to respond in this way. The darkness is never as warm as you think it will be.You mentioned not knowing things about me, and well, like you, I'm a little cautious about letting big details slip. But, I'm happy to make a little trade, to keep things fair.My favourite colour is blue, specifically the way the ocean looks from a cliff on the beach on a sunny day. I once nearly concussed myself when ice-skating. In just two weeks, I'm upending my whole life and heading off into the unknown. Not a bad unknown, but just a different one. Maybe I'll be able to give you an update on that later. I love the sound of rain, and the waves, the scratch of a pencil when you're writing a story. I'm a writer, which is my only excuse for how long this message will probably be. My hair is short, and no one can agree on whether it's dark blonde or brown. That's all I can think of for now. Thank you for your promise, I'm holding you to it. And I'll keep up my end over here. No more sinking into dark corners for me.By the way, a passerine is actually a category of birds, passerines make up over half of all bird species. Big bird fan over here, but I also picked it as my name because it's the title of a song that wasn't yet released in your timeline. This has been Passerine, out for now."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The First South Korean Single Malt, or, An Eagle, a Unicorn, and a Tiger Walk Into a Bar Ki One (formerly known as Three Societies) was founded in 2020 with a simple goal: be the first Korean single malt distillery and set a benchmark for what Korean single malt could be. Given the reaction to their releases, one can only say well done. They are the first Korean single malt on the market, with three core expressions (the Eagle, Unicorn, and Tiger) and special releases exploring different parts of their components or playing with finishes.  What could Korean single malt be? Nestled on the north face of the mountains 30 minutes from Seoul, this distillery gets no direct sunlight in the winter and can swing between -4C and 36C throughout the year. Bryan came from a brewing background, Andrew Shand from a distilling family. Together, they've set a Korean "profile" that hearkens back to their heritage while highlighting something synonymous with Korea: spice.  Make no mistake: whether at 6 months or 5 years, this is a spice-forward single malt, evoking kimchi and gochujang pepper alongside the classic single malt by which they were inspired.  As the first, they had to chart a path, and we get into an unusually detailed description of how taxation and regulation can lag behind industry growth and, if unchanged, hamper it. This was Bryan's first longform English interview for Ki One - I hope you enjoy! This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief takes a backroad ride to Lowey Crossing, Texas, where the hum of cicadas and the rustle of pecan leaves lead you straight to the heart of Texas whiskey—1845 Distilling. Tucked beneath a sprawling pecan orchard, Big Chief sits down with owner Bob Pettit and distiller Miguel Perez, a father-in-law/son-in-law team turning Texas grain into liquid gold. With a German-built still, American oak barrels, and a bold vision, they're blending heritage and innovation to craft whiskey that speaks with a Texas drawl and a world-class finish. The episode starts strong with a 118-proof Rye Bourbon that hits like a Texas thunderclap. One sip in and Big Chief declares it might just be in the running for his Whiskey of the Year—an explosive opening pour that sets the tone. Next, they pour their Wheated Bourbon, and the room goes silent. It's rich, smooth, and downright seductive. Big Chief's eyes light up, and there's talk of a new title: #WheatedKingOfTexas. Is the crown shifting? In the second half, things get downright artful with their Four Grain Bourbon. A perfect balance of corn, rye, wheat, and barley—this pour is a harmony of flavor. Big Chief calls it a “perfection pour,” where the sweet softness of wheat and the spice of rye meet in the middle to dance. They close the show with a sneak peek of a future Bottled in Bond expression. Clocking in at 100 proof, it's still in development—but already shows depth, structure, and an impressive viscosity that leaves Big Chief smiling. In fact, he's so impressed, he says his friend Bernie Lubbers—the Bottled-in-Bond evangelist himself—would tip his hat to this one. This episode is full of laughs, legacy, and some of the finest pours on the Texas whiskey trail. If you're not sipping with us, you're missing the story. And as always, friends—it's not just the whiskey, it's the Ride. Saddle up and come along.
