At Bourbon Pursuit, we always talk about the community aspect of whiskey, but rarely do we get to sit down with someone whose personal journey so deeply intertwines with building that community. That's why I was so excited to welcome Randy Sullivan to the show today. You might know him from Bourbon Real Talk or his brand, Prideful Goat. Randy shares a truly heartfelt story about how personal loss, specifically the passing of his brother, became a catalyst for him to create welcoming spaces for whiskey lovers. This conversation is packed with genuine moments – from hilarious reflections on his early days and the unique connections he's made, including how challenge coins got introduced into the scene! Randy is incredibly open about his own battles with mental health and the powerful impact the whiskey community has had on him. We also touch on the spontaneous journey behind co-founding Prideful Goat, focusing on quality and authenticity. Ultimately, this episode is a powerful reminder from Randy about the warmth and support found in the whiskey community and the simple, yet profound, importance of connection and looking out for one another Show Notes: Randy Sullivan's heartfelt journey in whiskey The impactful role of Jack Daniels in his life Founding Someone Say Whiskey and fostering positivity The concept of "challenge coins" in whiskey networking Navigating mental health dialogues within the whiskey community The inception of Prideful Goat and its core values The power of relationships and cherished memories through whiskey Randy's uplifting message about love and support for the community Support this podcast on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. We're taking you from the streets of Dallas all the way to the mountains of Kovir in our last side quest of the season. Newly returned from a trip to Texas, we discuss why we were there (it involves a bit of Witcher and a whole lot of whiskey) before we tear into this year's Witcher-less Tudum. After that, we enter the world of gaming with a ten-year tribute to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and why even now we just can't say no to Cerys. Finally, we wrap things up with a deep dive into the gorgeous new Witcher 4 tech demo in which we savor the breathtaking graphics as well as Ciri's newfound sassiness. It's a fun, free flowing episode that unlike a certain recent streaming live event, is filled to the brim with Witcher goodness! Hold music: "Local Forecast - Slower" by Kevin MacLeod
Send us a textThe Scotchy Bourbon Boys conduct a comprehensive blind tasting of the entire Weller bourbon lineup to determine which expression truly reigns supreme based solely on taste.• Full Weller lineup includes Special Reserve, Antique 107, 12 Year, Full Proof, CYPB, and William LaRue Weller• Tasting conducted completely blind with color-coded samples to eliminate bias• William LaRue Weller unanimously wins first place with its exceptional rich caramel profile• CYPB (Craft Your Perfect Bourbon) surprisingly takes second place overall• Weller Full Proof secures third with its distinctive candy apple and cinnamon notes• Weller Antique 107 lands in fourth place despite its popularity among bourbon enthusiasts• The highly sought-after Weller 12 Year unexpectedly places fifth in the lineup• Weller Special Reserve finishes last but is still acknowledged as a quality bourbon• Price and availability don't necessarily correlate with quality when tasting blind• Super Nash and Tiny experience palate fatigue and use water and other spirits to reset• Even the lowest-ranked Weller expressions are considered excellent bourbonsCheck out our website at www.scotchiebourbonboys.com for merchandise, glassware, and more information about our sponsors Whiskey Thief Distilling Company, Middle West Spirits, Rosewood Bourbon, and Alan Bishop's podcast "If You Have Ghosts, You Have Everything."A heated debate erupts as Super Nash and Tiny embark on a comprehensive blind tasting of the entire Weller bourbon lineup, revealing surprising favorites and challenging preconceptions about these coveted wheated bourbons. The duo meticulously samples six expressions—Weller Special Reserve, Weller 12 Year, Weller Antique 107, Weller Full Proof, Weller CYPB, and the prestigious William LaRue Weller—with no knowledge of which is which. What follows is a genuine, unfiltered evaluation based purely on taste preferences rather than reputation or price tag."Brown sugar, cinnamon bun, and caramel" notes dominate the conversation as they work through uniquely color-coded samples, discovering significant flavor differences despite all expressions sharing the same wheated bourbon DNA. Super Nash and Tiny's palates pick up distinctive profiles ranging from "pure caramel" to "candy apple with cinnamon," highlighting how aging conditions and proof points transform Buffalo Trace's beloved distillate. When the bottles are finally revealed, William LaRue Weller unanimously claims first place, confirming its reputation as an exceptional limited release. However, several rankings prove genuinely surprising, particularly the performance of Weller CYPB and Full Proof compared to the highly allocated Weller 12 Year. These results challenge conventional wisdom about which Weller expressions truly deliver the best drinking experience.Between passionate disagreements about rankings and hilarious confusion during the reveal, the tasting demonstrates why blind evaluation remains the ultimate test of quality. For bourbon enthusiasts chasing allocated Weller bottles, this episode provides valuable insight into which expressions might actually deserve the hunt—and which might be sitting overlooked on shelves.Whether you're a seasoned Weller collector or bourbon curious, join us for this entertaining and informative journey through Buffalo Trace's most celebrated wheated Add for SOFL voice over Whiskey ThiefSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

"I believe music can save souls."Angie Vertti arrived to Cabo in 2015, she quit a 9 to 5 job and decided to pick up her music career. She likes to say that “music found me”.It didn't take long after her arrival to be called up to the Cabo Wabo and other popular hot spots and trendy bars. Her band pushed me to challenging rock songs, such as; Metallica, Iron Maiden, Journey, Van Halen, Toto, Queen, you name it! The biggest voices in Rock history. She was called up on stage by Sammy Hagar, the “Red Rocker” sharing the stage with him on about 3 occasions. And of course thanks to him taking her under his wing her career had a major boost. In 2019 she did a 6 month contract on Celebrity Cruises. That gave her the opportunity to travel the world. In 2023 she attended the NAMM in LA. There she jammed with a street performer and the video became viral on Facebook, Youtube and TikTok with over 5 million views. 2023 also granted her the dream to be on stages of the Whiskey a Go-Go, The Viper Room and The Rainbow on The Hollywood Strip. That opened doors and opportunities to have more presentations in LA, Vegas and San Diego. Now she has moved to Nashville and looking to continue on her music journey. Ed Bley of Rising Tide Spirits joins the Scotchy Bourbon Boys to reveal the journey that led to his distinctive Old Swagger and Old Stubborn bourbons. With roots deeply planted in bourbon enthusiasm before entering the industry, Blabe brings a connoisseur's perspective to every aspect of his craft. His experience climbing rickhouses with legends like Eddie Russell has shaped his discerning palate and unique approach to whiskey creation. During the podcast, he offers listeners a rare glimpse into the meticulous process of selecting and blending barrels, emphasizing how the marriage of whiskeys evolves over time. The conversation dives deep into Rising Tide's striking packaging design, featuring hand-blown teardrop bottles with three-dimensional logos embedded in the glass base. "I wanted something unique, different than what you normally see," Bley explains, comparing bourbon to a complete pie where every element must work together—from the liquid to the story to the vessel containing it.Most fascinating is how Bley deliberately created contrasting expressions to reach different palates. His Old Swagger 12-year bottled-in-bond offers an elegant, balanced drinking experience, while Old Stubborn single barrels deliver intense flavors with remarkably long finishes. "When you go to tastings, what's amazing is they're both excellent but completely different ends of the spectrum," he notes, emphasizing that quality whiskey can exist across diverse flavor profiles. The discussion reveals the extensive behind-the-scenes work of building a bourbon brand, from navigating supply chains to planning releases years in advance. With two of the three bartenders hanging around near or above the arctic circle this week, this is an official Northern Exposure episode of 3WHH, with Lucretia, instead of channeling her usual Barry Corbin disposition, actually has some nice things to say about many of her usual targets, including KJP, Dread Coward Roberts, and even Ka-tan-ji! Something in the Alaska air must be affecting her!John Yoo offers his usual expert opinions (not meant sarcastically) about the entirely unexpected trifecta at the Supreme Court this week, which we all agree augurs something important not only for the big cases remaining this term, but also for the judicial epoch in which we current find ourselves. We also quickly dispatch with the Trump-Musk breakup, and briefly introduce a new segment, "What's Wrong with John Yoo?", since he insulted both Steve and Lucretia several weeks ago by referring to both as "political theorists." Them's is fightin' words; he might as well have called them Anglophiles or something worse. Finally, AI outdid itself this week, and an Norse-style epic poem that amazing described your three whisky bartenders with surprising accuracy:First came the Bold One, with thunderous laugh,Whose tongue split the silence like Odin's own staff. He spoke of Islay, of smoke and peat's sting,A connoisseur forged in the cask of a king. Then came the Wise One, in cloak of soft tone,With tasting notes ancient as Midgard's old stone. She sipped and she pondered, then spake with deep grace:“This dram bears the oak and the wind from some place.”The third was the Trickster, sharp-witted and sly,Who'd jest at the gods as the crows passed him by.With metaphors wild and a glint in his eye,He'd toast to Valhalla, then laugh till he cried.

What he learned along the way is that travel needs purpose to be truly fulfilling. It was during these travels that he went on a themed trip to Kentucky so he could learn about Bourbon. After visiting 17 distilleries in Kentucky and two more in Tennessee in eight days, he fell in love with the history, stories, and traditions of whisky distilling. But he also noticed that not all distilleries were telling the same story. His natural curiosity led him to shift from travel to creating the Whiskey Lore podcast.Drew's journey has now taken him to over 300 distilleries worldwide, exploring the unique stories and traditions behind each one. In 2025, he embarked on his ambitious “Great 48 Tour,” visiting craft distilleries across the United States, one state at a time, connecting with the passionate people behind America's vibrant distilling scene. These experiences, combined with his meticulous research, have culminated in Whiskey Lore: Volume One, a deep dive into 24 whiskey myths and legends that reveal the real stories behind the lore.Drew's passion for whisky history and storytelling doesn't stop there. He is also creating the ultimate distillery travel guide at whiskey-lore.com/travel, providing a comprehensive resource for planning immersive distillery visits. His earlier books, Experiencing Kentucky Bourbon and Experiencing Irish Whiskey, have set a standard for whisky travel guides, and he continues to raise the bar with every new project. The success of his books and podcast has driven Drew's mission to uncover more stories, write more books, and bring whisky scholarship to a higher level. Along the way, he is spreading the word through guided whisky tastings, speaking engagements, and interviews around the globe, inspiring whisky enthusiasts and travelers alike to explore the rich history and culture of this beloved spirit.About Whiskey LoreWhiskey Lore®: Rewriting Whiskey History and Inspiring Distillery AdventuresAt Whiskey Lore, our mission is to uncover the truth behind whiskey's most enduring myths and legends, reshaping how the world understands and appreciates this storied spirit. We take a deep dive into the complex nature of bourbon blending, aging conditions, and how whiskey changes over time.• Rabbit Hole Distillery founded by Kaveh Zamanian creates bourbon that captures the essence of what you smell in actual rickhouses• Kentucky exclusive Hiegold features special label designs by Mark Gagnon celebrating Ohio's aviation history• The Louisville distillery offers a modern architectural experience culminating in a sixth-floor bar with city views• Rabbit Hole's lineup includes Cave Hill (standard bourbon), Hiegold (high rye), DARERINGER (sherry finished), and Boxergrail (rye)• Discussion of how bourbon consistency was the industry standard until about 10 years ago when batch variation became desirable• Experiment mixing Cave Hill and Hiegold together created a distinct gingerbread cookie flavor not present in either bourbon alone• Environmental factors affecting bourbon from production through transportation and shelf storage significantly impact flavor• Upcoming podcast featuring Greg Schneider and his new Four Branches Distillery's 9-year Kentucky straight bourbonPlease support our sponsors: Middle West Spirits (check out their new purchase of Old Elk), Whiskey Thief Distillery, Spirit of French Lick, Rosewood Bourbons and Ryes, and Alan Bishop's One Piece at a Time Distilling Institute.Bourbon enthusiasts know that every bottle tells a story, but Rabbit Hole takes this concept to artistic heights with their intricately designed single barrel releases. Tiny explores their Hiegold expression – a bourbon featuring German rye that captures the authentic essence of what you smell walking through a Kentucky rickhouse rather than the caramel-sweet profiles dominating today's market. The episode peels back the layers on Rabbit Hole's Louisville distillery, a modern architectural marvel where visitors spiral alongside the still, culminating at a sixth-floor bar overlooking the city. Unlike traditional Kentucky distilleries that lean heavily on heritage, founder Kaveh Zamanian has created a contemporary bourbon experience that honors tradition through flavor rather than façade. What truly captivates is Tiny's deep dive into bourbon's evolution over the past decade. Where consistency once reigned supreme, today's market celebrates batch variation – a marketing revolution pioneered by legends like Elmer T. Lee, Jimmy Russell, and Booker Noe who transformed "inconsistency" into exclusivity. Similarly, finished whiskeys once derided by purists are now embraced as innovative expressions of the distiller's craft. The most fascinating segment comes when Tiny experiments with mixing bourbons, discovering how Cave Hill and Hiegold together create a distinct gingerbread cookie note absent in either bourbon independently. This sparks a broader discussion about how bourbon's chemical composition continuously evolves through production, transportation, storage conditions, and even how it settles on your shelf at home.Whether you're a bourbon novice or connoisseur, this episode offers valuable insights into how environmental factors shape what's in your glass, why modern distilleries are embracing batch variation, and why the seemingly simple act of If You Have Gohsts voice over Whiskey ThiefSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

Send us a textIt's been a privilege, an honor, and an immense joy to have Eric as my cohost over the past 4 years and over 190 episodes of the podcast. All things end eventually, but this one certainly hurts a lot. On this episode, though, we send our Whiskey Mutant off into the sunset with one of his favorite whiskeys and we talk about how wonderful his time on the show has been. We also talk a bit about what's next and what you can expect from TIMBP moving forward. I'm not going anywhere, and I hope you aren't either.I love y'all. Thanks for everything. What happens when you mix whisky with wine? You get something a lot like this week's episode in which we discuss, decode and deliriously debate writer Bartosz Sztybor's most recent and possibly final Witcher comic series, The Witcher: Corvo Bianco. Set within the idyllic vineyards of Toussaint, it's a feisty little farewell of a story and at five issues, it's a generous pour. So, settle in as we open a bottle of The Daisen Japanese Blended Whisky and touch on topics such as our love of Duchess Anna Henrietta, our confusion over Yennefer's motives (and physics defying abilities in the bedroom), our discovery of what it means when the “tatties have goon o'wer the side,” and why you should always, always keep the cuffs on.

Leading the Revival of Maryland Rye This week on the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I got to cross off another long-awaited guest: Sagamore Spirit. Situated harborside in downtown Baltimore, Sagamore's campus is among the more beautiful I've visited. The 5-acre plot centers around Penny, their 40' copper column still, which has (almost) single-handedly managed their transition from MGP-sourced rye to 100% Maryland-distilled rye, which now fills the vast majority of their bottles. Few brands have moved from sourcing to their own distillate as seamlessly or as transparently. Along the way, Sagamore Spirit (no "s" because they'll only ever make one) has played with numerous finishes, including award-winning port cask and unique mead and beer finishes from nearby partners. Not to mention their one-off Calvados-finished Rye, which I still rank as one of the best pours I've ever had. Sagamore is no longer alone in their promotion of Maryland Rye, with previous guests like Baltimore Spirits Co. also flying the banner, but it's hard to argue that Sagamore isn't leading the way, whether by volume, shelf space, or distribution reach. Ryan Norwood has been with Sagamore for several years and joins me to talk hospitality, building a rye brand for Maryland starting with Indiana distillate, and how their ongoing connection to the Vanderbilt-owned Sagamore Farm informs their branding, bottles, and their surprising decision to leave horses off the label. Thank you to Ryan for entering the Whiskey Ring! Big Chief heads into the whiskey-rich hills of Somerset, Pennsylvania, where coal dust memories and rye whiskey pride still echo through the mountains. He sits down with Maximilian Merrill, owner of Ponfeigh Distillery, a man reviving the bold legacy of Monongahela Rye, one barrel at a time. With roots tracing back to the Ponfeigh Smokeless Coal Company and a family hunting cabin where rye once flowed freely, Maximilian shares the story behind the name, the heritage, and the craft that fuels Pennsylvania's largest working distillery. It's more than whiskey—it's a generational echo in a glass. Big Chief and Maximilian open with Ponfeigh's 90 proof Monongahela Rye with a mashbill of 95% rye strait from the river valley and 5% malted barley. It's a balanced, spice-forward whiskey steeped in history and tradition. Notes of baking spice, dark fruit, and that unmistakable rye backbone set the tone. On the second half they step into deeper waters with the cask strength Monongahela Rye, unfiltered, unapologetic, and absolutely unforgettable. This bold expression packs a punch and then wraps you in a warm hug of orange spice tea, hot honey, and dessert-like sweetness. It's a perfect nightcap pour, a dessert whiskey for those who prefer their sweets with a kick. Don't miss this powerful episode filled with legacy, fire, and flavor. Because this isn't just about sipping whiskey, it's about honoring where it came from. Here's to Ponfeigh. Here's to passion. And here's to the road that always leads to the next great pour. This is The Whiskey Trip. Let's ride.
