Send us a textWhy is whisky suddenly everywhere again? In this episode, we explore the surprising resurgence of both Scotch and bourbon — and why new distilleries are opening, bottles are becoming collectibles, and whisky culture feels more relevant than it has in decades. We break down how Scotch whisky has quietly entered a new golden era in Scotland, fueled by premiumization, global demand, experiential tourism, and a return to craftsmanship and patience. At the same time, we look at how bourbon exploded in popularity through American craft culture, cocktail revivals, limited releases, and hype-driven scarcity — and why that rapid growth is now entering a more mature phase. This isn't just a story about alcohol. It's a story about brand building, timing, culture, and business models. Scotch shows the power of slow compounding value, geographic protection, and long-term thinking. Bourbon shows what happens when authenticity, personality, and hype collide — and what businesses can learn when growth happens faster than patience.Whether you're a business owner, brand builder, or just someone fascinated by why certain products come roaring back into the spotlight, this conversation connects whisky's revival to broader lessons about craftsmanship, differentiation, and building something that lasts.
It's the most anticipated episode of the year! Jim and Todd return to the Bourbon Road bar to ring in the New Year and unveil their 2025 Whiskey of the Year. After a marathon year of reviewing nearly 200 different spirits—including 121 bourbons, 29 ryes, and 24 single malts—the hosts have crunched the data and narrowed the field down to five elite contenders. The "Top 5" lineup represents the absolute best pours of 2025, featuring heavy hitters from some of America's most iconic distilleries. The hosts revisit the Woodford Reserve Chocolate Malt Whisper Redux, a 139.4-proof "happy accident" that stunned them with notes of fudgesicle and dark chocolate. They also pour the Jack Daniel's 12-Year-Old (Batch 3), a 107-proof expression that finally won Jim over with its rich profile of dark wood, fruit sweetness, and ripe banana. Also making the cut is the Knob Creek 21 Year Old, the oldest release to date from Jim Beam. At 100 proof, it defied expectations with a velvety texture and complex notes of toasted coconut and dark cherry. The heavyweights continue with the Russell's Reserve 13-Year Old (2025 Release), a barrel-proof bourbon praised for its "concentrated goodness" of salted caramel and brown sugar. Rounding out the finalists is the Wild Turkey Master's Keep Beacon, a 118-proof standout that the hosts describe as the "perfect turkey," bursting with burnt orange and toffee. In addition to the main countdown, Jim and Todd announce their 2025 Craft Distillery of the Year. Tune in to hear the debates, the tasting notes, and the final reveal of which bottle takes home the title of Whiskey of the Year! Be sure to check out our private Facebook group, "The Bourbon Roadies" for a great group of bourbon loving people. You will be welcomed with open arms!

Californians have made whiskey since the Gold Rush when they served miners and then loggers. Craft bourbon has been taking off in the last couple decades -- with as many as 150 distilleries in the state. For her series California Foodways, KALW's Lisa Morehouse visited a distillery's new home in the North Bay that's producing whiskey at a location where people used to make something really different: massive objects that changed the course of world events.
Jack Daniel's Toasted Barrel is now a year-round release, and this one absolutely delivers. Big banana notes, toasted marshmallow, chocolate, and pie crust vibes at 100 proof make this a surprisingly balanced and flavorful pour. This might be one of Jack's best expressions yet.DISCLAIMER: The whiskey in this review was provided to us at no cost courtesy of the spirit producer. On this episode of The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief heads into the North Georgia mountains to sit down with distiller Randy Stamey at SharpTop Distilling Company in Jasper. The conversation explores SharpTop's Appalachian roots, hands-on approach to distilling, and the careful balance between honoring traditional mountain spirits and building a modern Georgia whiskey program grounded in patience and purpose. Jasper itself is woven deeply into the story. Long before legal distilling returned to the region, these hills carried a strong moonshine tradition, with families quietly running corn liquor through the mountains during Prohibition and the decades that followed. The area is also known for its historic marble mines, which helped define the local economy and supplied stone used in notable buildings across the country. Today, SharpTop Distilling sits squarely in the middle of that history, located between the old jail and the county courthouse, a powerful reminder of how an outlaw tradition has come full circle into a respected, legal craft. The tasting begins with Honest Man's Friend & Protector Moonshine, a corn whiskey made from a 100 percent corn mashbill. The pour delivers classic Southern character with notes of hot buttered popcorn and a subtle hint of caramel, keeping the grain front and center and showcasing the clean, honest profile of a true mountain-style corn whiskey. Next, the glasses move to Connahaynee Reserve Barrel Aged Whiskey, built on the same 100 percent corn mashbill but transformed through time in the barrel. The aging brings added depth, oak influence, and structure, highlighting the natural progression from still to barrel while preserving the sweetness and simplicity of the original corn-forward spirit. In the second half of the episode, Randy introduces Sharptop Lawless McClain's Cut Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This bold expression carries a mashbill of 64 percent corn, 24 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley, is aged more than four years, and is bottled at 100 proof. The higher rye content brings spice and backbone, balanced by corn sweetness and a maturity that reflects SharpTop's commitment to doing things the right way, not the fast way. The episode closes with a look toward the future as Randy shares his excitement about a bourbon currently aging quietly in the rickhouse, one that is not yet ready for release but already showing serious promise. It is a fitting reminder that great whiskey is never rushed and that at SharpTop Distilling Company, goodness truly takes time. Pour a glass, settle in, and Take the Ride with Big Chief and Randy Stamey on The Whiskey Trip.

We tried an experiment this week—livestreaming the taping of this week's episode on Steve's 'Political Questions" Substack. We think is was a success even though Steve's camera froze up several times along the way. John Yoo hosts this first episode of the year, which is devoted entirely to understanding and critiquing "post-liberalism," currently one of the hottest new things going on the right today. (John makes reference to one of our live clashes with a leading post-liberal, which Steve wrote up here.)Attacks on the classical liberalism of the American Founding are not new from the left—Marx hated John Locke perhaps above all others except perhaps Adam Smith—and there have always been conservative critics of Lockean liberalism, starting with Edmund Burke back in the 1790, but also like Leo Strauss whose famous short phrase was that materialism Lockeanism would devolve into "a joyless quest for joy." This is an urgent and relevant question as we move toward the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence mid-year, and while we expect the 1619 Project left will be out in force attacking the Declaration for the usual stupid reasons, we'll also have to content with some on the right attacking it for reasons that may have a more plausible basis, but which we think are confused—when they are not wrong. This is merely the first episode of the podcast this year that will be devoted to various aspects and controveries about the founding that will surely erupt over the next six months. Strap in!
Whisky writer Dave Broom has helped transform how the world tastes and talks about spirits, bringing flavour, culture, and meaning to a new generation. In this festive edition of the programme, Jaega Wise finds out how his ideas and passions came about, and what has made him one of the most influential voices in the drinks world.Born in Glasgow, Dave Broom began his career in the industry with a job at the wine merchants OddBins. He later ran a pub in Bristol before moving into writing about spirits for the trade media. Since then, he's written 15 books on whisky and other spirits. His writing is known for drawing people into the world of flavour through music and food references, and through connections to place. As well as writing about Scotch, he has also long explored whiskies and spirits from around the world - and was an early advocate for Japanese whiskies. In June 2019 Dave Broom presented a crowd-funded documentary film called The Amber Light, which took him across Scotland, meeting distillers, musicians, and writers, and exploring the idea that whisky reflects the place it comes from. The film was directed and produced by Adam Parks.Presented by Jaega Wise Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Natalie Donovan

Send us a textFive heavy hitters enter a blind tasting; a tie forces a live tiebreak and the crown goes to Old Man Winter With a prestige French oak finish. We trade hype for flavor, argue proof vs. balance, and learn how availability shapes a worthy Scotchy Bourbon Boys “Bourbon of the year.”• sponsors thanked and distillery updates shared• lineup set for the blind: five bourbons, one wild card on the side• simple scoring rules agreed, color coding to prevent bias• first-pass notes on cola, peanut, vanilla, and fruit-forward profiles• proof chat and how it affects palate, not just heat• debate on noses vs palates, dryness vs sweetness• tally confusion resolved, two-way tie identified• audience tiebreak selects Old Man Winter as winner• value and availability weighed against rarity and price• honorable mentions and how oxidation changes bottles over timeMake sure that you leave us good feedback on Apple and iHeart and Spotify five-star rating and everything. Leave a review and then become members. What happens when you strip away labels, lock in a scoring system, and let the glass do the talking? We gathered the full crew, poured five of the year's most talked-about bourbons completely blind, and chased the truth through cola notes, peanut vibes, dessert-like vanilla, and bright, fruit-forward finishes. The lineup was stacked: Knob Creek 21, Russell's Reserve 13 (2025), A Midwinter Night's Dram, Cathedral French Oak, and Old Man Winter from Preservation. Expectations were sky high for the heavy hitters—but the scoreboard had other plans. We walk you through the tasting rules, the early favorites, and the turning point when pour number three changed the room's mood. Proof chasers met balance seekers as a silky 90s-proof contender outperformed its label, while a 110-proof nose bomb turned out more polarizing on the palate than predicted. Cathedral French Oak cast a spell on the nose. Knob 21 delivered oak-driven structure. Russell's 13 flashed that rich sweetness many love. Midwinter offered juicy fruit and charm. But the question we kept asking was simple: which glass makes you want another pour?By the end, scores tied between two colors and we pulled in a live audience to break it. The winner? Old Man Winter—an underdog that paired layered fruit, spice control, and a welcoming finish with the practical upside of being findable at retail. We dig into why availability matters for a “Bourbon of the Year,” what blind tasting reveals about our biases, and how time in the bottle can flip your rankings weeks later. Stick around for honorable mentions, lessons learned from oxidation, and a reminder that great whiskey doesn't always wear the most expensive label. If you enjoyed this blind battle, follow the show, share it with a bourbon friend, and drop your own top pick of the year in a review. Happy New Year from The Bourbon Road! Jim and Todd ring in the New Year at the Bourbon Road bar with one final sample show to close out 2025. With the "Whiskey of the Year" episode just around the corner, the hosts are clearing the decks and diving into four distinct and intriguing pours that range from experimental finishes to classic Kentucky profiles. It's a diverse lineup that takes their palates on a journey from the coast of France to the American Southwest. The tasting begins with a luxurious offering from Bardstown Bourbon Company's Distillery Collection: the Normandy Calvados Brandy Barrel Finish. This blend of 12 and 13-year-old Indiana bourbons was finished for 28 months in apple brandy casks and an additional four months in toasted oak. Clocking in at 104.2 proof, it delivers a "flavor explosion" of honey crisp apple, vanilla cream, puff pastry, and a rich, compote-like texture that leaves the hosts searching for descriptors like "candle nose" and "apple pie." Next, they take a sharp turn to Oxnard, California, for Sespe Creek Distillery's Warbringer, a Mesquite Smoked Southwest Bourbon. This 98-proof experimental pour features mesquite-smoked corn and malted rye, resulting in a savory, polarizing profile. Todd and Jim pick up notes of "burnt all-beef hot dogs," barbecue smoke, and pumpernickel, describing it as a "smoky beast" that definitely ruffles some feathers but delivers on its promise of uniqueness. Returning to the Bluegrass State, the hosts sample the inaugural release from Jackson Purchase Distillery: the Full Proof. Produced in Hickman, Kentucky, by Master Distiller Craig Beam and Assistant Master Distiller Terry Ballard, this 4-year-old bourbon (roughly 117.8 proof) punches above its age class. It offers a definitive, classic bourbon profile with notes of buttery caramel, brown sugar, and a viscous, oily mouthfeel that Jim calls the "Wikipedia picture of bourbon." Finally, they explore the New Riff High Note Confluence Project Volume 1, a 100% Wheat Whiskey. This 6-year-old expression uses a complex mash bill of Red Turkey Wheat and various malted wheats. At cask strength, it surprises the table with a dark, complex profile featuring notes of cotton candy, mint tea, medicinal cherry, and a "Good & Plenty" black licorice finish that showcases the depth of heirloom grains. The episode wraps up with a "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" segment where Jim and Todd attempt to rank these four very different whiskeys. Will they lock stock on their favorites, or will the polarizing pours divide the room? Tune in to find out and get ready for the 2025 Whiskey of the Year show coming next week! Be sure to check out our private Facebook group, "The Bourbon Roadies" for a great group of bourbon loving people. You will be welcomed with open arms!
On this year-end special episode, we'll take a look back at the events that shaped the whisky industry in 2025. Becky Harris of Virginia's Catoctin Creek Distilling will join us to discuss a troubled year for her colleagues in the craft distilling industry, and we'll offer some predictions for 2026, too.

On this week's episode of The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief pulls up a chair with his brother Little Feather for a no-nonsense, end-of-year sit-down rooted in family, flavor, and hard-earned opinions. With a year of miles behind them and a table full of whiskey in front of them, the brothers look back on Big Chief's 2025 Whiskey Trail while taking on the challenge of naming Whiskey of the Year and Distillery of the Year. It is part reflection, part debate, filled with laughs, brotherly jabs, and a deep respect for the craft and the people behind it. To strip away hype, labels, and reputation, the tasting is done completely blind, with all five whiskeys poured into plain mason jars. No fancy glassware and no branding, just whiskey. Each pour is judged on nose, palate, mouthfeel, finish, and balance, forcing every whiskey to stand on its own merits. The mason jars set an honest, humble tone and lead to a few surprises and some strong, unfiltered reactions. As the tasting unfolds, Little Feather flips the mic and interviews Big Chief about the highs, lessons, and standout moments from the 2025 Whiskey Trip. Between sips, they talk road miles, distillery visits, and the people who made the journey matter. The conversation naturally turns forward, with Big Chief sharing what is already taking shape for 2026, including new regions, deeper dives into the craft, and a continued commitment to giving distillers a real voice. The five whiskeys competing for Whiskey of the Year represent a wide range of styles from stops along the trail. The lineup includes Anita's Choice, a six-grain bourbon from Burnt Church Distillery; Reverence from 1845 Distilling Company; a bold Cask Strength Rye from Ponfeigh Distillery; Broken Halo Cask Strength from War Trail Distillery; and Batch 37 from Barrell Craft Spirits. With no labels to lean on, each whiskey earns praise or criticism based solely on what is in the jar. When the dust settles, Whiskey of the Year goes to 1845 Preemption Reverence, a pour that rose above the rest when judged blind for its balance, depth, and character. Distillery of the Year honors go to Trinity River Distillery, recognized not only for its whiskey but for the full experience it delivers, from immersive tours to the renovation of its historic ranch-style bean factory, along with its Whiskey Kitchen and Bourbon Nursery. Whether listeners agree with the final calls or not, this episode is about honoring the pours, the places, and the passion that keep American whiskey moving forward. Pour yourself something good, pull up a chair, and Take the Ride with Big Chief and Little Feather as they close out 2025 and set their sights on what is ahead.

With a history spanning 2,000 years and still playing a vital role in global commerce, the oak barrel, as correspondent Bill Whitaker discovers, is much more than just a container. Barrels are a vital ingredient, especially in the production of Bourbon whiskey – giving it all of its distinctive color and much of its taste. Whitaker takes us inside the largest maker of wooden barrels to glimpse the magic and mystique of this essential tradition. International crime groups are finding new, sophisticated ways to infiltrate the global supply chain online, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars of goods per year. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reports on the growing threat of cargo theft and how 24,000 bottles of Guy Fieri's tequila vanished on their way to the warehouse. Mezcal is having its moment. This handcrafted Mexican spirit, made from agave, has seen exponential growth in popularity and production. Correspondent Cecilia Vega travels to Oaxaca's countryside and meets the mezcaleros laboring to quench the world's thirst for mezcal. Leaking barrels have been a problem for whisky makers going back generations, and just finding the bad barrels is the biggest part of the problem. Now, a test project involving Royal Barkla, a Boston Robotics robot dog equipped with an ethanol sensor, is underway at the John Dewar & Sons Poniel maturation campus near Glasgow. The robotic dog alerts its human operators when it discovers a leaking barrel, and so far, the test has been a success. We'll talk with Bacardi's Angus Holmes about the project on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, no layoffs are expected from the shutdown of the Jim Beam Distillery in Kentucky for 2026, while Scotch whisky global sales are down for the third straight year.
