Breaker Whiskey is an Atypical Artists production created by Lauren Shippen. If you'd like to support the show, please visit atypicalartists.co/support.----[Transcript]Breaker, breaker. This is Whiskey calling out for Passerine. Got another message here so I'll, uh, read it out. "Breaker breaker it's Passerine here. I sent a message out to you a little while ago, and honestly, I don't remember half of what I said. I was in a bit of a weird place then, so it might have been nonsense. If you come across it, I hope it isn't too incomprehensible. Hope I had somewhat of a point. Just wanted to message again. Kinda miss hearing your voice on the radio, but hey, you do what you want. It's your life, and I bet you're making the most of it, now you know what it's worth.I was just thinking about home. About what it means to be home. If you recall, I set off on a big adventure, a lot like yours, I think. Just getting out to see what it was like out there. To see things, I'd never seen. I have this motto about making sure I do the things I want in this life. No regrets, right? And I'm home now. After a year of being away, I made it home. Not back to my original timeline, I don't think. Things are still wonky, and it's definitely not the way it's supposed to be, but I'm not fading away anymore. I'm stable. And I feel like I've found a place to belong. Just like you did. You found Harry, and that's your home. And I know it's not the same, but nothing ever is. Look at me rambling again. I'm trying my best to get better at being succinct, but hey, work in progress. My point is that home is important. And that maybe you'll never get to go back to your timeline, but maybe that's not a bad thing. Maybe you can find a new one, like I did. One where you and Harry can be together.Still on the search for Charleston Chews by the way. Don't think we have those in my neck of the woods. Still gonna keep looking. It sticks in my head every time I enter a shop with a chocolate section. Hoping you're safe at home.Passerine out."I did get your previous message. I don't know if you heard my response. It sounds like maybe the radio waves are not our friends all the time. I know I haven't been on here as much as I was in that year of wandering that I did, but I still think about all of you out there hearing my voice and either finding comfort in that or wondering who the hell is talking on the radio. But I'm happy to hear that you're home, if I can remember correctly, which, you know, I'm not sure I can, you last talked about change and swinging between hopefulness and hopelessness, so sounds like maybe you are at home with hope now? And you're right. Harry is my home. We've- we settled into a good place, Harry and I. It's not always perfect, but I don't know. It's like all of the hard edges of ourselves that used to chafe on each other have been sanded down by proximity and, well, an effort, I guess, because it can't just be proximity, right? Because we were together in a house alone for years and still, you know, bumped into those sharp points. So the effort is important and it makes the time go by fast too. Really, you know, working on not just coexisting with somebody, but building a relationship with them, building a home with them. Not to say that we're building a permanent home. We're still moving from time to time, but mostly because Harry's actually really wanted to see things. see things that she's never seen before. Like you wanted to. And so we've wandered. And some of the things have been things that I saw and fell in love with on my grand road trip. And some have been new to me too. And that's been really nice. Both sharing the things that excite me with her and discovering new things together. But yeah, it's amazing how the time slips away, you know? I look up and already it's been two years that we've been doing this, that we've been what we are to each other. It doesn't feel real. I look in the mirror and I don't feel like I'm that much older. I'm not even sure I feel wiser. And isn't that supposed to be the hallmark of age? And I guess I've been distracted in exploring all the nooks and crannies of this country, and also all of the dimensions of Harry. I guess I haven't been leaning on the radio as much as I have in the past. I still like having a connection to the outside world, such as it is, especially since it doesn't seem like...well, what you have said about change and about home. I have started to wonder if we have found ourselves in a new timeline after all, in some kind of new home. Because we haven't heard from Junior in a really long time. I mean, we haven't heard from Birdie either, but they said something had changed, and I wonder...I do wonder if we're safe now. If we're safe and we can just be home. And if that's the case, then maybe we can create a new home base. Really actually build a home together. I've never been one for scripture. Surprise, I know, but there's this one phrase that stuck with me through the years, and that's "everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and none will make them afraid". I think that's the promise of home, isn't it? Being in your own space with your own people. Unafraid. And against all odds, I think we may have found that. What a miracle that is. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I do enjoy this tether to the wider universe. But the habit I have of making sure that I'm consistently sitting down and listening to the radio on some kind of cadence and responding to the people who are able to get through. I think part of that has been driven out of fear. Listening at the radio for a warning. For some kind of information that would send my life off its axis again. And I don't want to be afraid anymore. That's not to say that I still won't sit by the radio and listen for you, Passerine, or for anyone else who's sent me a message through the years. But. But maybe I don't know when you'll next hear from me. Maybe...maybe I'm gonna go sit under my own vine and fig tree for a little while. Oh, what a miracle that is. So Passerine, I am glad you're home, too. And to anybody else who might be hearing this, wherever you are, whoever you are. If you're not home yet, I hope you find it soon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief welcomes Hemal Patel and Joe Godfrey of Patel Bourbon for a conversation about friendship, craftsmanship, and the journey of building a premium whiskey brand. Patel Bourbon was founded on the idea that great whiskey should be more than just something you drink. It should be something that brings people together, sparks conversation, and creates lasting memories.   We kicked off the first half with Patel's Bespoke Straight Wheat Whiskey, an 8 year, 3 month old single barrel bottled at 115 proof. Soft wheat sweetness, honey, and light oak with a smooth, warming finish. From there, we moved into their Kentucky style Rye, a 9 year, 3 month old cask strength whiskey that beautifully balances sweetness and spice. Bright citrus, baking spice, and a peppery kick with a touch of caramel. Along the way, Hemal and Joe shared the story behind Patel Bourbon, the meaning of their Epicurean philosophy, and the passion that drives every barrel they select.   The second half opened with their Bespoke Straight Bourbon, a nearly 9 year old cask strength expression packed with rich caramel, oak, and baking spice notes. Deep caramel, toasted oak, and vanilla with a bold, lingering finish. We wrapped up the episode with Patel's impressive 9 year, 2 month old Straight Rye bottled at 121 proof, a bold and flavorful whiskey that showcases everything rye lovers are looking for in a premium single barrel. Dark spice, mint, and charred oak with a long, spicy finish.   Beyond the whiskey, this episode explores entrepreneurship, barrel selection, and what it takes to build a brand in today's whiskey landscape. Hemal and Joe discuss the importance of relationships, staying true to your vision, and creating a company that stands for something bigger than the bottle.   One of the things that makes Patel Bourbon unique is its commitment to giving back. Through its support of the David Downie Foundation, the company helps families facing the financial burdens that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. It is a reminder that success is not just measured by what you build, but by how many lives you impact along the way.   And because no ride is complete without a little extra excitement, one lucky listener will win the same Patel Bourbon Straight Rye featured on the show, along with a Patel Bourbon T shirt and a The Whiskey Trip rocks glass.   Pour a glass, settle in, and Take the Ride.

On a bright July afternoon in 1986, twenty-five-year-old London estate agent Suzy Lamplugh left her office to show a house to a client her diary noted only as "Mr Kipper," and she was never seen again.==========HOUR ONE: It is considered by many, Britain's most well-known disappearing person case. Even now, over three decades later, people in the UK are still fascinated and intrigued by the unexplained vanishing of Suzy Lamplugh. (The Suzy Lamplugh Mystery) *** John List planned the murders of his own family so carefully, he almost got away with it. In fact, it took 18 years to catch him. (The Family Man Who Murdered His Family) *** We'll look at what it was like to be a woman in the 17th Century… and accused of witchcraft. (Witchly Accusations) *** If you drink whiskey, or even if you don't, you're likely familiar with “Jameson Irish Whiskey.” But did you know that cannibalism played a part in its history? (Whiskey and Cannibalism) *** A strange phenomenon takes place in Arkansas, and despite the numerous sightings and investigations, there is still no explanation for it. (Unexplained In Arkansas)==========HOUR TWO: Seeing a lifelike human skeleton in a doctor's office, especially in the past couple of centuries, was – and in many cases still is - commonplace. But where did one go to get such lifelike skeletons if you were a doctor in the 1800s? Why, a skeleton factory, of course! (The Skeleton Factory) *** The story of Kate Watson is a grim one – living as a prostitute in the Old West, and when that wasn't enough she took up cattle rustling. Her husband wasn't any better. So it's probably no surprise that she was strung up until dead. But maybe you should wait to pass judgement until you hear the whole story. (The Lynching of Cattle Kate) *** In March of 2004, teenager Brianna Maitland left work in the late evening hours and was never seen again. To this day it is still one of Vermont's most infamous mysteries. (The Vanishing of Brianna Maitland) *** Plus, “The Haunted Adirondack Mountains”==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Parents always feel their child is special in some way – something that makes their child better in some way than other children. Parents of indigo children are no different, with some parents thinking their children have psychic abilities. Doctors say that these children have ADD or ADHD, but one parapsychologist says indigo children have something even more special – possibly even paranormal - inside them. (Supernatural Indigo Children) *** When you think of a mad scientist you most likely think of Victor Frankenstein – but it's rumored Mary Shelley took inspiration for the character from a real mad scientist by the name of Andrew Ure. (Andrew Ure: A Real Life Mad Scientist) *** The story of Kate Watson is a grim one – living as a prostitute in the Old West, and when that wasn't enough she took up cattle rustling. Her husband wasn't any better. So it's probably no surprise that she was strung up until dead. But maybe you should wait to pass judgement until you hear the whole story. Adam's on the front porch watching one of those Oklahoma sunsets that make you forgive the state for everything else. Dave pulls up. Walks toward the house, chest out, confident, ready to record. Adam asks the only question that matters: did you bring the equipment? He did not. New baby syndrome. Joshua got his first bath that night, Lady Pamela's still on the mend and bending over a tub isn't on the menu yet, and somewhere between bathing the kids and getting out the door, the recording gear stayed home. So Dave logged a solid hour of windshield time driving back and forth across town to fetch it. The baby's worth it. Six days old and already back to birth weight, sleeping three hours at a stretch, an almost unfairly easy kid for a man who's had colicky ones before. The pour is a curveball: Saltire, a 14-year independent bottling distilled at Tomar, a first-fill Oloroso sherry cask. It's a Speyside, but nobody at the table would've guessed it. It drinks salty, like saltwater taffy, like it grew up near the ocean. The notes promise polished leather, dried cherries, tobacco, and, if you add water, burnt sugar, hazelnut, and "speckled chocolate milk," a phrase that derailed the conversation for a solid minute because nobody could agree what speckled chocolate milk is supposed to be. Cheers to Jesus. We're on the winning side. Then Adam reaches past the planned backbiting episode, grabs Francis Weiser's Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs off the shelf, and lands on something better: the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, June 24th.Here's the hook that got him. The Church only celebrates three birthdays. Jesus. Our Lady. And John the Baptist. Everybody else gets honored on the day they die, because for a saint that's the real birthday, the day they enter eternal life. So why John? The tradition says all three were born free from original sin. John wasn't conceived without it like Jesus and Mary, but he was sanctified in the womb when he leapt at the sound of Our Lady's voice at the Visitation. Born clean. St. Augustine treats it as a settled tradition, and if the Fathers are in, the guys are in.The logic of the date is the part that'll stick with you. June 24th rides the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and from there the light starts to wane all the way down to Christmas and the winter solstice, when it turns and climbs again. John said it himself: I must decrease, so that He must increase. That's not just a calendar coincidence. It's a map of the soul. The more room you take up in your own heart, the less there is for Christ. If you want Him to be king there, you've got to get out of the way. Then the fun: how to actually live it. Put it on the calendar and get to Mass. Pray the Benedictus as a family and light a candle. Build a bonfire on the eve, John the Baptist is one of the three fires on the Catholic year. Feed the kids honey sticks and, if you're brave, dried crickets, locusts and wild honey, desert food. Make it the anchor of your summer. This is the Establish pillar in the flesh, the small traditions that hand your kids an identity they'll carry for life. Catholic spice. Raise your glass.TOPICS COVEREDDave forgets the recording equipment thanks to "new baby syndrome," and logs an hour of windshield time driving back for itJoshua Niles at six days old, back to birth weight and sleeping three hours at a stretch, an unfairly easy babyLady Pamela still recovering, and a dad bathing the kids to take the load offThe aside on Irish twins, baby formula, and why breastfeeding affects fertilityElizabeth Niles getting blessed by Pope Leo, and which popes "bless with their kisses"Whiskey of the week: Saltire 14-year, an independent bottling distilled at Tomar, first-fill Oloroso sherry caskA Speyside that drinks salty, like saltwater taffy, and the mystery of "speckled chocolate milk"Dave's wheat experiment, tripling the planting and cutting it by hand with a scythe, and the open call for a small-scale wheat-farming expert to email the showThe broody-hen saga, abandoned eggs, four surprise chicks, and Adam's "apartment" trick for relocating broody hens at nightWhy the episode pivoted from a planned backbiting topic to living liturgicallyFrancis Weiser's Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs as a source for feast-day livingThe Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist on June 24thWhy the Church celebrates only three birthdays: Jesus, Mary, and John the BaptistThe tradition that all three were born free from original sin, and John sanctified in the womb at the VisitationWho John was: son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Zechariah struck mute, "no one greater born of women"The small-t tradition that John's parents died young and he was raised in the desert by angelsJohn as the forerunner and the "best man" escorting the bride to Christ the BridegroomFifteen churches dedicated to John the Baptist in ancient Constantinople aloneJohn as patron of tailors, shepherds, and masons, and why each one fitsWhy June 24th: the summer solstice and "I must decrease so that He must increase" as a map of the soulThe real reason it's the 24th and not the 25th: the Roman calendar counting backward from the kalendsWeiser's pushback on the idea that the feast was a baptized pagan partyJust how high this feast ranked in the early Church: three Masses, abstaining from servile work, and a 14-day fast prescribed by a German synod in 1022The other two feasts of John: the Decollation (Aug 29) and the East's celebration of his conception (Sep 23)St. John Paul II on Christ as door, vine, mother hen, and actual BridegroomTier-one celebration: put feast days on your calendar and get to Holy MassJoseph Pieper on a true feast requiring the divine and abundanceFamily traditions like pierogies, and how they hand kids a Catholic and ethnic identityPraying the Benedictus (Luke 1:68-79) as a family and lighting a candleTier-two celebration: a bonfire on the eve, the three fires of the Catholic year, and feeding the kids crickets and honey sticksTier-three celebration: making the feast the anchor of your family's summer vacationREFERENCED IN THIS EPISODEBooks & Writings:Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs by Francis X. Wild Turkey Master Distiller Eddie Russell celebrated his 45th anniversary at the distillery the other night with the premiere of a short film about his career in New York City. "Eddie Russell: His Own Way" covers Eddie's career from pushing barrels as the new guy to the success that got him into the Bourbon Hall of Fame. The premiere came with the release of a Russell's Reserve Bourbon created to commemorate the anniversary by Bruce Russell, Eddie's son and Wild Turkey's Associate Master Blender - the same way Eddie originated Russell's Reserve to honor his father Jimmy's 45th anniversary at Wild Turkey years ago. We'll talk with Eddie and Bruce Russell on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, job cuts could be coming this week at Diageo, and the International Wine & Spirits Competition announces its North American winners for 2026.

Episode 116 John Stuart spent years insisting he had been framed. Most people dismissed the claim as just another excuse from a career criminal with a long history of arrests, escapes, and bad decisions. But the attempted murder conviction that haunted Stuart's life may not have been as straightforward as it appeared. In Part 3 of our Whiskey Au Go Go series, we examine the 1965 shooting of Sydney underworld figure Jacky Steele, the conviction that transformed Stuart into a deeply paranoid man, and the conspiracy he believed followed him for the rest of his life. Along the way, Stuart develops an obsession with alibis, begins documenting his movements through postcards, befriends one of Queensland's most respected detectives, and repeatedly warns nightclub owners about the growing threat of protection rackets. As Brisbane's criminal underworld collides with allegations of police corruption, organized crime, and extortion, Stuart finds himself once again at the center of the story. The question is whether he's a whistleblower, a criminal opportunist, or something in between. Because when the Whiskey Au Go Go burns, investigators will discover that John Stuart had been warning people for months that a nightclub was going to be firebombed. The problem is that John Stuart was also the man they suspected of setting the fire. They also take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, discussing the films that shaped their childhoods and the movies that still hold a special place in their hearts today.Along the way, Koko and Jeff explore the growing popularity of the phrase "It's Not That Deep" and why sometimes life becomes a lot easier when we stop overcomplicating every situation. Join us for fun streams featuring whiskey tastings, bourbon reviews, and gaming adventures. Whether you're a connoisseur or a casual gamer, there's something for everyone. Grab your glass and controller, it's time to level up!The draw to combining whiskey and gaming lies in the creation of a highly controlled, immersive ritual designed for ultimate stress decompression, emotional escapism, and low-pressure socialization. For many individuals—particularly men—this combination merges a sensory-rich luxury drink with a rewarding digital environment. Together, they form a powerful "third space" outside of work and family life where a person can completely disconnect. However, this specific pairing activates unique psychological loops that can serve as either a healthy reward or a hidden coping mechanism for mental health struggles. Why the Pairing Works: The Psychological AppealThe intersection of whiskey and gaming is not accidental; the two activities complement each other to satisfy several emotional and cognitive needs:The Ritual of Slowing Down: Whiskey is a spirit meant to be sipped slowly, forcing a slower physical pace. Pairing it with a casual or narrative-driven game creates a dedicated ritual that signals to the brain that the productivity demands of the day are officially over. The "Dual-Escape" Loop: Gaming provides a high level of cognitive absorption, forcing the brain to focus on a virtual task and leaving no room for real-world worries. Whiskey physically slows down the central nervous system, creating a combined mental and physical barrier against chronic stress.Low-Stakes Socialization: Gaming with online friends while having a casual drink provides social connection without the emotional pressure of formal face-to-face conversations. It allows for "shoulder-to-shoulder" bonding, where players connect over a shared digital objective rather than direct vulnerability. The Comfort of Control: In a chaotic world, games offer clear rules, clear objectives, and immediate rewards (leveling up, winning matches). Whiskey enhances this comfort by creating a cozy, predictable sensory experience (the warmth, the flavor profile). The Hidden Risk: When Decompression Becomes DependencyWhile using gaming and a glass of whiskey to unwind is common, the combination can easily transform into an unhealthy coping mechanism if used to mask underlying anxiety, depression, or burnout:The Dopamine Overload: Both gaming (through quick reward loops) and alcohol (through chemical spikes) release dopamine in the brain. Over time, relying on both simultaneously can desensitize your brain's natural reward system, making everyday life feel flat or uninteresting without them.Avoidance Instead of Processing: If a hard day automatically triggers a gaming session and multiple pours of whiskey, it prevents the emotional processing required to actually resolve life stress. The underlying problems remain untouched, waiting as soon as the game turns off and the alcohol wears off.Disrupted Rest: While both activities might help you drift off to sleep out of sheer exhaustion, the combination of late-night blue light from screens and alcohol intake destroys REM and deep sleep architectures, leaving you more emotionally fragile and anxious the next morning.

As someone likes to say, we'll just have to see what happens, as it is far from clear that the MOU is Obama-lite.Meanwhile, since today is Juneteenth, don't miss Lucretia's modest proposal for how the liberation of slaves in 1865 should be commemorated, over at Civitas Outlook. (Since Steve is producing and posting this episode from the middle of the ocean, we're making it an ad-free edition, since the geography-based auto-ad placement might post up some truly bizarre ads. We sit down with Turner Wathan of Rolling Fork Spirits to taste, laugh, and get unusually honest about how bottles actually get made, found, and sold when they don't fit tidy categories.  We dig into Fortuitous Union and why the “distilled spirit specialty” label can hide some of the best liquid on the shelf: foursquare rum, MGP rye, careful proofing, and a Weller barrel finish that pulls vanilla into the blend without muting spice. Turner shares how bartenders react, why tastings are the real marketing engine, and what he looks for when he's building something meant to be opened with friends.  Then we go deep on Armagnac and Calvados through the Wayward Cask lens: container-sized buys, Gascony farmers, traveling stills, French oak that isn't charred, and the kind of terroir detail that makes brandy feel like a “final boss” spirit. We also talk Bourbon Deluxe, the Wathen family whiskey history, why Green River Distillery became the right partner, and what the current whiskey market slowdown means if you care about value, age statements, and authenticity.  If you like independent bottlers, barrel finishing, Kentucky bourbon history, rum in bourbon barrels, and rare French brandy, this one is packed. This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief sits down with Cody Stys from The Vaults at The Stanley Hotel, a one-of-a-kind whiskey destination located beneath one of Colorado's most famous historic hotels.   The conversation begins with the rich history of the Stanley Hotel, which opened in 1909 and has become a landmark in the Rocky Mountains. The hotel is perhaps best known for inspiring Stephen King's novel The Shining. During a stay at the hotel in the 1970s, King found himself nearly alone in the massive property as it prepared to close for the season. The experience sparked the imagination that would lead to one of the most iconic horror stories ever written. While Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation wasn't filmed at the hotel, the Stanley remains forever connected to The Shining and attracts visitors from around the world who want to experience a piece of literary and cinematic history.   Of course, this is The Whiskey Trip, so the guys quickly get down to business by pouring four outstanding single barrels selected by Cody.   On the first half of the show, Big Chief and Cody sip on a Root Shoot Distillery Single Barrel and a The Heart Distillery Single Barrel, discussing the unique character of Colorado whiskey and the craftsmanship behind these exceptional picks.   The second half features a Laws Four Grain Single Barrel and a Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye, delivering bold flavors, rich complexity, and plenty of conversation about what makes a great barrel selection stand out from the rest.   Throughout the episode, Cody shares stories from The Vaults, insights into the barrel-picking process, and how the Stanley Hotel's history and atmosphere create an unforgettable experience for whiskey lovers. From historic hallways and ghost stories to world-class pours and good company, this episode captures everything that makes whiskey culture so special.   Pour yourself something good, settle in, and enjoy the ride.   Take the Ride with Big Chief.
