Outrage isn't new, but the way it plays out in 2025 feels like a full-time industry. This week, it's Phillies fans brawling over a foul ball, a CEO swiping a signed hat at the US Open, Bruce Willis' family facing judgment in a Diane Sawyer interview, and American Eagle cashing in on controversy with its headline-grabbing campaign. Here's the problem: every headline slaps the same word on these stories—backlash. But backlash and blowback aren't the same thing. If you don't know the difference, you're missing the real story. In this episode, I break down:The Phillies “Ball Snatch” dad who turned a viral mess into a lesson in staying calm. The US Open “Hat Grab” CEO who folded fast—and why it saved his business.Bruce Willis' family's media strategy, turning online judgment into strategic storytelling.American Eagle's outrage marketing proves that some brands script backlash into their budget. Why the age of the public apology is over—and what leaders are doing instead. The September takeaway? Be ready, stay grounded, and communicate clearly — no matter what's at stake.Communicating under pressure isn't just a useful skill — it can be the difference between escalation and resolution. For Chris Voss, former FBI hostage negotiator and CEO of The Black Swan Group, it's a daily discipline built on empathy, self-regulation, and intentional listening. In this expanded conversation from our Spontaneous Speaking miniseries, Voss offers a rare window into the mindset and methods that helped him show up calm, focused, and adaptable when the pressure is sky-high.“Emotional intelligence is an insane accelerator to outcomes,” Voss shares, explaining how empathy, tone, and timing can shift the direction of any conversation. He breaks down techniques like labeling and mirroring, explores how to use silence and word choice strategically, and explains why overthinking can be just as risky as acting too fast. Looking for more DTP content? Check us out here: https://www.thereadinesslab.com/dtp-links In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, host John Scardena interviews Erik Kramer, a 26-year U.S. Army Special Forces veteran, tech innovator, and senior leader with the National Center for Urban Operations (NCOU). Erik brings decades of experience in counter-drone warfare, urban operations, and emerging threat environments, with direct insight from years spent training Ukrainian forces and advising on counter-unmanned systems. Kramer explains how drones and unmanned systems are fundamentally transforming warfare and crisis response — creating a “revolution in military affairs.” Drawing from his time in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, he shares how decision-making is shifting from senior leaders to junior operators who must act instantly under drone threats. He warns that the U.S. and local agencies remain woefully unprepared for a September 11th–style event involving unmanned systems, and stresses the urgent need for counter-UAS training, decentralized decision-making, and survivor-first leadership. Beyond drones, Kramer highlights the often-overlooked risks of subterranean operations in cities — from tunnels and underground infrastructure to complex dense-urban terrain — and how NCOU is working with ports, first responders, and military units to build awareness, create tailored counter-drone strategies, and deliver advanced training. This episode connects lessons from Ukraine, Special Forces culture, and emerging technologies directly to emergency managers, first responders, and policymakers who must adapt to an era where drones, cyber, and underground threats redefine homeland security.

Send us a textWhat does it take to lead through chaos? Tracy Nolan knows firsthand. This remarkable Fortune 100 executive has repeatedly stepped into roles most would consider overwhelming - from transforming struggling retail operations to merging telecom giants during a global pandemic. She also likes to solve puzzles.Tracy's journey from retail buyer to telecom executive to healthcare leader reveals a unique talent: she thrives in crisis. "Give me a job that needs transformation," she explains, likening crisis management to solving a complex puzzle. Her approach centers on genuine human connection - creating space for people to be heard when uncertainty reigns. When tasked with merging Sprint and T-Mobile while simultaneously navigating COVID restrictions, Tracy faced an unprecedented challenge. With 14,000 employees looking to her for direction, she implemented creative solutions like shift-based staffing and drive-through wireless services. Throughout the process, she maintained open communication channels, hosting weekly calls where she simply listened to employee concerns. "During crisis times, I slow down and take time to listen," she reveals, countering the common executive instinct to act quickly without gathering input.Tracy also shares profound insights about leadership sustainability. She acknowledges the importance of scheduled downtime and maintaining boundaries, noting how her team appreciates when she's not sending weekend emails. Her philosophy on team development stems from a powerful personal experience when a boss believed in her more than she believed in herself - a gift she now pays forward by creating growth opportunities for her team members. For executives facing seemingly insurmountable challenges, Tracy offers wisdom earned through decades of crisis navigation: "Realize that nothing is done in a day. Take a deep breath, figure out what's the most critical item you need to address today." This incremental approach, combined with honest communication and self-compassion, creates a sustainable path through even the most turbulent circumstances.Find our more about Tracy on LinkedIn or at tracynolan.com.Email the podcast via tom@leadinginacrisis.comWe'd love to hear from you. In this episode, I examine Cracker Barrel's rebrand disaster that dominated social media and the news last week. The company traded its nostalgic, country-store feel and iconic “Old Timer” logo for a modernized version that customers called bland, sterile, and soulless. The backlash was immediate and relentless: negative headlines, viral videos, and $143 million in lost market value. At first, Cracker Barrel dismissed critics as a “vocal minority” and insisted most people loved the changes. But late yesterday, they reversed course, scrapping the new logo and promising to bring back the Old Timer after finally acknowledging their customers' voices.I break down how Cracker Barrel mishandled its crisis, why their reversal is only a first step, and what lessons any business can learn about protecting its brand identity, listening early, and turning customer feedback into meaningful action.Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and update on why this episode shifted focus01:10 Cracker Barrel's rebrand rollout and why customers felt betrayed 02:18 What effective crisis management should look like — listen, admit, connect, act, communicate 03:10 The costly fallout: stock down $143 million and daily negative headlines 03:40 How Cracker Barrel dismissed loyal customers as a “vocal minority” 04:08 Why the Old Timer logo mattered to the brand's identity and culture 05:22 Lessons from Coca-Cola's New Coke disaster and recovery 06:15 Takeaway #1: Listen early and acknowledge problems before backlash snowballs 06:45 Takeaway #2: Protect the distinctive qualities that make your brand irreplaceable 07:20 Takeaway #3: Turn feedback into action and communicate changes publicly 07:43 Why having a PR crisis plan in place is essential — insights from Pat Ford (episode 65) 09:07 How our PR firm helps companies build visibility, credibility, and growth strategiesKey Takeaways:Listen early and admit problems quickly. Waiting to acknowledge a crisis makes the damage worse. Cracker Barrel didn't publicly recognize customer frustration until millions in value were already lost. Early acknowledgment can stop the hemorrhaging before it escalates.Protect what makes your brand unique. Cracker Barrel's country-store aesthetic, rocking chairs, and Old Timer logo weren't just decorations, they were the emotional anchors of the brand. Diluting what sets you apart erodes loyalty and gives customers less reason to stay.Turn customer feedback into visible action. Bringing back the Old Timer logo was a good first step, but only because it showed loyal voices had an impact. Publicly turning feedback into change restores credibility and proves customer relationships matter.Have a crisis plan in place before you need it. Crises unfold in real time under high stress. As Pat Ford emphasized in episode 65, knowing who leads communications, how decisions flow, and what steps to take is the only way to manage effectively in a PR crisis that often feels like the “fog of war.”Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts & SpotifyPlease consider rating and reviewing my show! From April 9, 2024: In the early morning on March 26, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge. The bridge collapsed, resulting in the death of six of the eight individuals conducting maintenance on the bridge. The incident has disrupted commuter traffic and the transport of hazardous materials, and it has halted shipping traffic at the Port of Baltimore, among other effects.Lawfare Research Fellow Matt Gluck discussed the bridge's collapse, how authorities responded to it, and what it all means for the resilience of U.S. critical infrastructure and the state of crisis response with Juliette Kayyem, a professor of international security at the Harvard Kennedy School—who recently wrote a book on disaster management. For your communication to be credible, you can't just say it — you have to do it.Want people to believe what you say? According to Richard Edelman, the words you choose only get you halfway there. To build real trust, he says, you have to practice what you preach.“Action builds trust,” says Edelman. “If you don't do something, you can't talk about it.” As the president and CEO of Edelman, a leading global communications marketing firm, Edelman is widely recognized for his thought leadership in marketing and PR, especially on issues related to corporate trust, brand reputation, and social responsibility. His annual Edelman Trust Barometer reveals a sobering reality: "Two-thirds of people believe leaders lie to them now, business leaders, government leaders, even journalists." For people and organizations that want to rebuild trust, whether in a one-on-one relationship or with a customer base of millions, Edelman's advice is simple: "Decide, do, communicate."In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Edelman and host Matt Abrahams explore strategies for winning trust when traditional authority no longer guarantees it. In an age of skepticism, Edelman's insights show that sustainable trust comes not from perfect messaging, but from consistently aligning your actions with your words.Episode Reference Links:Richard Edelman158.
