Send us a Text Message.Up until now I've been recording most of these episodes speaking into a half-empty clothes cupboard. It's sounded surprisingly good, at least to me, but from next week I will have a slightly more professional setup: a dedicated — though tiny — space, basic soundproofing on the walls, and a new mic. I hope we'll be able to hear the difference. In migration news this week, I came across an article featuring data on students going overseas to study in the past year. I must admit that my western bias shows when I say that I didn't even imagine the country that was the #1 destination — Japan. Why Japan? Thanks to a engaging documentary by Dipesh Kharel, The Japanese Dream: Nepali students in Japan, I learned that there are many reasons. First, visa requirements are easier for Japan than for some other countries. Once there, students can work part-time — a set number of hours a week — which is also key. By the way, according to the documentary, there were 45,000 Nepali students in the country in 2023. This compares to 5,000 Nepalis in total in Japan in 2005. A fun fact that I learned: there are 600 Nepali restaurants in Tokyo alone.Dipesh follows a handful of students, from when they're studying Japanese in Nepal and planning to migrate, to their arrival in Japan and in later years, juggling responsibilities of work and family. I like that he doesn't paint a fake, rosy portrait, but shows some of their hard times also. There's a particularly poignant scene when he's interviewing the father of Rajkumar, who's now in Japan. The father tells him that the day his son learned that he got his visa he had the equivalent of $18. Six days later he had raised $15,000 so his son could migrate. "I can't pay this back," he told his son, meaning the burden was now shifted to the young man.

Being born and brought up in the City of Dreams, Mumbai, Dipesh Tank has seen both the shades of the same coin. A TEDx Speaker, a social entrepreneur and a great example of a simple yet powerful human being. From working towards the social causes to spreading awareness about the age-old blind faiths that is taking away the life of so any girls and women to fighting against the social parasites with his initiatives, he is intensifying the lives of so many human beings to the greatest possible extent. He has been sincerely working towards the safety of women travelers in Mumbai locals and rescuing girls/women from human trafficking rackets. His works have already saved so many lives and his promise to 'Nirbhaya' remains undeterred. Takeaways fro this episode: 1. When one door shuts suddenly, another opens. Have faith in the Universe 2. Instead of gender bias distinctions and conditioning from childhood, it is time to teach our kids to be human beings first 3. Girls/women are not objects of pleasure, they are as much human on this Earth as a man. So also are transgenders 4. Blaming and expecting that somebody else will clean up the mess will never bring in the solution. Each and everyone has to do their part on this planet to make it a better place for us and for future generations to come

Gali Guleiyan is a film about a maze - both mental and physical. Khuddoos lives in one of the narrow lanes in old Delhi. It's a vast and bewildering network of homes scrunched up against each other. A lesser actor would have asked more blatantly for our sympathy or given us some comfort to clutch on to. But Manoj Bajpayee understands that Khuddoos is broken irreparably. His mind is a fog of memories and punishments.
Dipesh is quite the eco-leader and one of the founders of the Flipflopi Expedition, a remarkable plan to build a 60ft dhow out of recycled plastic and sail it from Lamu, Kenya to Cape Town South Africa ('just' 5,250km!). More on Dipesh: "Having lived on the Kenyan Coast for seven years, Dipesh became addicted to trash. He was obsessed with what else one could do with all the flip-flops and discarded bottles that he picked off the beach. For a few years, he had a lot of fun building giant size sculptures (have a look at Mfalme the Whale) from thousands of flip-flops as well as houses, water tanks and other structures from plastic bottles. Alas, his children, he was told, could not spend their lives picking trash, and school fees had to be raised, so he and his family left the coast and moved up country where he currently runs an outdoor adventure company near Mt Kenya where it's far too cold to wear flipflops." We visited Dipesh in Nairobi, Kenya and shortly after, visited dhow maker Ali in Lamu where we got to see the "small" plastic pilot dhow for ourselves! In this wide-ranging discussion with Dipesh, we cover Dipesh's varied but mission-driven career path, the Flipflopi Expedition's key messages and the power of individual choice in changing the world. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Find the show notes here ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ *** SOCIALIZE WITH US *** Website Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube
Today's episode is a short and sweet episode of a recap of a mastermind experience I had recently in Raleigh with some good friends. It's a fun discussion in one of T-Bone's basement after some continuing education all day. I say it all the time, but some of the best CE isn't the CE, but the CE after the CE! It's a short conversation about the importance of systems, the verbiage we use with patients, and the importance of your team being co-owners in the practice! We got cut off by dinner plans, but this fifteen minutes is just jam paced with goodness and I had to share. One of my favorite parts is listening to my friend Dipesh talk about his education post dental school. It's often asked on how do you pay for or can you afford education after dental school because of loans. Well, Dipesh had over half a million dollars in loans when he graduated and kept taking courses…turned out pretty good for him! As always thanks so much for listening! “Doing history ideally is like doing anthropology of people who are gone, except that you don't have native informants, you only have these written fragmentary sources. But the same hermeneutic struggle goes on: you're trying to understand somebody from their point of view.” Dipesh Chakrabarty, the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of history & South Asian languages & civilizations at the University of Chicago and Distinguished Dean's Professor at the ANU's School of Culture, History, & Language (College of Asia & the Pacific), talked with our own Ian Pollock about the intersections of history & anthropology, the struggle of scholars from poorer countries to understand their societies own their own terms, & the appeal of western-style academics, plus what it takes to do history right: training, judgment, & how to use theory (and not let theory use you). Find Dipesh's bio, including a list of his published works, at https://history.uchicago.edu/directory/dipesh-chakrabarty. You have to make a story out of lived experiences to write history, and that story has to be enjoyable.” “All disciplines basically work with implicit models. The more formal a discipline is, the more explicit the models are.” “When you do your thesis and you defend it, you have to defend it in terms of what it contributes to the general understanding of anthropology. And that general understanding of anthropology or history is in the end more Western, even though we think of it as 'general.' But the ‘general' is a Western ‘general.' So what happens is, because of this unevenness of resources, these poorer countries actually have a tough time coming to understand themselves. Because their students get scholarships to go out and immerse themselves, like I did, into these ‘general' discussions, but the ‘general' discussions are Western. So I actually think sometimes that the West is producing its own intellectuals everywhere in the world.” “What we are faced with is a predicament where, as humans, we cannot not wish other humans to have the rights that we enjoy. But at the same time, our numbers have grown, and that also has some consequences. And how to combine our thinking about those consequences and our thinking about rights without some kind of optimistic leap of faith, either in technology or just sheer faith in human ingenuity, we don't know how to combine them.” "If you looked at the planet without thinking about rights, without thinking about justice -- because in Darwin's book there's no justice -- if you look at the planet through that framework, you have a language for talking about other species. But you can't bring it into the language of rights and things. And therefore it's like the 'truths' of evolution, and the aspirations in political philosophy, they just stare at each other, having nothing to say to each other." After the usual nonsense, we welcome to the podcast this week (5:11) Dipesh Chakrabarty, theorist and historian extraordinaire from the University of Chicago. Dipesh recounts an amusing encounter from his visit to Rice that helps prove that the 1950s dream of limitless plenitude is still very much alive (and not only in Houston). We then return to his seminal/ovular essay, “The Climate of History,” and Dipesh shares his thoughts on how he might augment his four theses with a discussion of humanity's ecological overshoot and of the deep connection between geology and biology. Then we talk about why the recent polarization between Team Anthropocene and Team Capitalocene is a bit silly, how climate science originated out of interplanetary studies and what it means for our species being that we don't have an effective species-level political apparatus. Dipesh explains why it's important to think about capitalism in terms of geology and suggests that attaining an epochal consciousness could possibly restore content to the idea of the “common concern” of climate change. Finally, we ruminate on Cymene's concept of the “betacene” and the necessarily experimental status of politics today. There's much to provoke and digest in this week's podcast: enjoy!
Dictionary of Now #2 - Dipesh Chakrabarty & Eyal Weizman – FORUM April 11, 2016 7pm Lectures, discussion Within what forums can the political evolve today? In the face of post-democratic mechanisms of globalization, the crisis of the national state and increasing restrictions on human rights and civil liberties, there have been shifts in the places and practices of social negotiation. There is an ever-growing distance between the spaces of global politics and the networks of local political initiatives. Departing from the idea of the Greek polis and Hannah Arendt's concept of political acting as free, public negotiation, the historian Dipesh Chakrabarty and the architect Eyal Weizman explore the term forum.
