Dr. C. Everett Koop was one of the most iconic figures in U.S. public health—instantly recognizable by his beard and bow tie, but much less known for the deeper convictions that guided his work. Despite his groundbreaking contributions to pediatric surgery, tobacco control, and AIDS education, his full story has remained largely untold—until now.In this episode of the Public Health Insight Podcast, we speak with Dr. Nigel S. Cameron, the author of the first full biography of Dr. Koop. Drawing on personal friendship and years of research, Cameron shares why he felt called to tell Koop's story, how the book came to be, and what public health professionals today can learn from Koop's moral clarity, courage, and complexity.References for Our Discussion◼️Dr. Koop: The Many Lives of the Surgeon GeneralGuest◼️Nigel S. In this episode of America's Founding Series, Professor Nicholas Giordano tells the extraordinary but often overlooked story of Robert Morris & Haym Salomon: The Men Who Financed American Freedom. While the Revolution was fought with muskets and courage, it was won with money, and these two patriots provided it. From Salomon's imprisonment by the British to the desperate scramble for $20,000 that saved the Yorktown campaign, this episode reveals how their financial sacrifices helped secure American independence. Without Morris and Salomon, the Revolution may have collapsed before victory was ever possible. Professor Giordano reveals how these forgotten patriots risked everything for liberty and why their names deserve a place alongside America's most celebrated founders. Episode Highlights: The dramatic moment when George Washington demanded, “Send for Haym Salomon,” to save the Yorktown campaign. How Robert Morris created a financial system from scratch to sustain the Revolution and died in debt for it. The little-known story of Salomon's arrest, espionage, and tireless fundraising efforts under British surveillance.

We introduce listeners to Thaddeus Stevens, a significant yet often overlooked figure in American history. As an ardent opponent of slavery, Stevens played crucial roles in the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, and led efforts to impeach President Andrew Johnson. Bruce Levine, author of Thaddeus Stevens: Civil War Revolutionary and Fighter for Racial Justice, joins the discussion to provide in-depth insights into Stevens' life, his relentless fight for abolition, equal rights, and free public education, and the powerful legacy he left behind. The episode delves into Steven's contributions, his complex relationship with Abraham Lincoln, and his radical yet unfulfilled vision for racial equality and land redistribution during the Reconstruction era.[00:00] Introduction to a Historical Figure[01:22] Meet the Hosts[02:01] Sponsor Message and Listener Engagement[03:32] Introducing the Guest: Bruce Levine[04:56] Thaddeus Stevens: Early Life and Influences[08:42] Stevens' Political Career and Ideals[18:57] Stevens' Role in the Anti-Slavery Movement[27:07] Sponsor Message and Historical Recording[30:07] Thaddeus Stevens and the Underground Railroad[32:30] Stevens' Political Career and Opposition[36:33] Stevens' Radical Ideas and Reconstruction[43:29] Stevens' Views on Tariffs and Capitalism[46:56] Legacy and Recognition of Thaddeus Stevens[49:13] Conclusion and Final ThoughtsTakeaways: Thaddeus Stevens was a pivotal figure against slavery, known for his radical ideas and determination. Stevens played a crucial role in the passage of the 13th and 14th amendments, pushing for racial equality. Despite his significant contributions, Stevens faced backlash and was often marginalized in historical accounts. His vision for land redistribution to freed slaves, known as '40 acres and a mule,' was ahead of its time but ultimately rejected. Stevens' fierce opposition to President Andrew Johnson's policies showcased his commitment to Reconstruction efforts. His legacy reminds us that true progress often requires bold action and unwavering conviction, even in the face of adversity. Bruce Levine Ph. "Savarkar was a great rationalist. The surprising thing is how such a rationalist went completely off the rails in regard to other matters. His writing is full of villains and among the villains are the Buddha, all Buddhists, whom he considered hereditary traitors, Ashoka, Akbar, Tipu Sultan, and then Gandhiji. On the question of Godse and Apte there was no doubt that they were his acolytes, they were his worshippers. Sardar Patel said the problem was that once you create an atmosphere then you don't have to tell anybody to go and assassinate; he reads your lips. You just have to see the publications Savarkar was patronizing... They were only penning hatred and it was all centered on one man -- Gandhiji. Savarkar felt that the Marathas were the real legatees of the Mughal empire and then the damn outsiders, the British, slyly took over. The same thing happens in his own life . He thinks he is the heir to Lokmanya Tilak and then this outsider Gujrati comes and takes the whole prize away. This great disappointment in his life gets centered on one man and becomes hatred. Today, Gandhiji is a great inconvenience because he embodies Hinduism, the collective memory of our people. If Savarkar's line is pursued, then India will become a dismembered nation like Pakistan; society will be riven by hate. This eternal search for purity always ends in that. The difference between Indic religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism from Semitic religions is that ours is an inner-directed search. Everything - pilgrimages, idol worship, mantras etc. is to aid this inner search. When you marry it to the State, religion becomes an instrument of the State. You only have to look at the Jewish religion when Gaza is to be bombed - it just becomes an instrument. Secularism is a way of keeping the purity of religion. It's not anti-religion. Keep religion and the State separate. That is why my book ends with this appeal - Save Hinduism from Hindutva" - Arun Shourie, author, 'The New Icon; Savarkar and the Facts' talks to Manjula Narayan on the Books & Authors podcast.

For today's episode, we go back to the origins of Autism. It seems necessary because of the recent shifts in what is Autism and the confusion in the rates of Autism. Autism was here in the 1930's, and it magically showed up in different areas of the world. The two-part series intends to remember the phenotypes that appeared and became known as Autism and Asperger's.It is my opinion, the recent shifts in defining Autism could be rooted in questionable intentions. Regardless, one goal of the podcast is understanding and explaining Autism. By the end of the episode, and by the end of the two-part series, I hope you gain understanding of the Autistic Phenotype. If the children described by Asperger in Autistic Psychopathy in Childhood were alive today, they would receive a smorgasbord of diagnosis.Introduction to the Podcast (00:00:00 - 00:00:41,320):Asperger's Work and Concept of Autism (00:00:41,320 - 00:02:21,040):Historical Context and Asperger vs. Kanner (00:02:21,040 - 00:05:10,520):Case Study: Fritz V. In the United States, questions of how we celebrate – or condemn – leaders in the past have never been more contentious. In 2017, a statue of Robert E. Lee was removed – leading to a race riot and terrorist attack. But in 2020, statues of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Columbus, and even Ulysses S. Grant were defaced or toppled. All of this comes to the question of how we judge the past. When are the morals and ethics of people born centuries earlier excusable for the conditions of their birth, and when are they universally condemnable? What separates a Thomas Jefferson from an Emperor Nero?To discuss this incredibly challenging topic is someone perhaps nobody better qualified: Dr. Victor Davis Hanson. He is an emeritus classics professor and author of books on the Peloponnesian War or assessing the ancient world's best military leader. He was also awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2007 and was a presidential appointee in 2007–2008 on the American Battle Monuments Commission. We discuss the following:•Times when American's feared the removal of Jefferson or Theodore Roosevelt statues in 2021 (or their toppling in riots). But we have also celebrated statue removal, such as the removal of Saddam Hussein's statues after the fall of his regime in 2003 or the removal of Marx/Lenin Statues in Eastern Europe in 1991. What is the difference?•The criteria for a community to remove a statue in a healthy way•How we judge those of the past and determine that some character flaws are due to their times of birth, while other character flaws are universally condemnable – Essentially, what makes a slave-owning Jefferson a product of his time while, say, a Nero, is universally understood as cruel•The dangers of canceling anyone who doesn't meet our 21st century standards; conversely, the dangers of slavish worship of them•Who deserves more statues today
