Welcome to episode #979 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Dr. Kurt Gray is a social psychologist whose work couldn't be more relevant to our times. As a professor at UNC Chapel Hill, director of the Deepest Beliefs Lab and the Center for the Science of Moral Understanding, and the author of the new book Outraged - Why We Fight About Morality and Politics and How to Find Common Ground, he's helping reshape how we understand conflict in a divided world. In this conversation, Kurt unpacked why it's not that we're wired differently across political lines - it's that we perceive harm differently. He introduces ideas like the “exhausted majority,” the dangers of elite-driven outrage, and the evolutionary roots of our hypersensitivity to perceived threats. We also explore the surprising role of personal narratives in reducing division, the generational shift in how people approach morality, and how resilience - not avoidance - is what we really need when engaging across differences. His work dismantles the myth that we're hopelessly divided and instead offers a path forward - one grounded in empathy, humility, and the science of human connection. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the volume of moral outrage around you, this episode just might restore a little hope. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 55:13. Hello from beautiful Montreal. "So the piece that I most resonate with the Dialectical Behavior Therapy is it's one of the therapies that really understands this core feeling of feeling overwhelmed and like you don't want to be alive." - Sharon Stein McNamara EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sharon Stein McNamara, a licensed psychologist and adoption-competent therapist. Sharon, an adoptee herself, shared her personal journey and the profound impact of adoption on her life, particularly during her adolescent years when she faced suicidal thoughts after a breakup. We delved into the complexities of adoption and how they can lead to feelings of self-loathing and overwhelming distress, especially among adoptees. Sharon introduced us to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a therapeutic approach that has been particularly effective for adopted adolescents and young adults. She explained how DBT incorporates mindfulness and distress tolerance skills, which are crucial for individuals who may feel their emotions are too intense to manage. Throughout our conversation, Sharon emphasized the importance of recognizing and validating these feelings rather than dismissing them. She shared her own experiences with DBT and how it helped her and her clients navigate the challenges of attachment and self-worth. We discussed the significance of shifting core beliefs about oneself, especially for adoptees who may struggle with feelings of being unwanted or unworthy. Sharon's insights provided hope and practical tools for families and individuals impacted by adoption. She encouraged listeners to never give up hope on adoptees, as the right support and understanding can lead to healing and growth. I hope this episode resonates with anyone who has been touched by adoption or is seeking effective therapeutic tools to support themselves or their loved ones. Thank you for joining us, and please share this episode with anyone who might benefit from Sharon's expertise. ===============

Doug Hoffer first gave Greek a try at Wheaton College and found himself hooked. He carried on to pursue more of the same, first in Wheaton's M.A. in Biblical Exegesis and then at the University of Chicago, where he is now completing his doctoral dissertation, Covenants Human and Divine: Diathēkē in Gal 3:15-17 and Its Relevance for Paul's Argument in Gal 3-4. John's Gospel is perceived by some as anti-Jewish in its portrayal of Jesus' Jewish compatriots as frequently misunderstanding his teaching. In John 16:25, however, Jesus asserts that his speech (in John) had been to that point deliberately veiled and claims that he would subsequently speak more forthrightly. Jesus' comment thus suggests that his audience's failures of understanding were the (intended) result of his enigmatic speech rather than his listeners' wickedness or spiritual dullness.

Power and the Woman's Vote: How Can History Help? With Susan Ware

Tcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2021 34:53

The women's rights movement dates back to as far as 1848. It has made significant strides to ensure women are being treated fairly at home, at work, and in society as a whole. This manifests in equal pay, a union for working women, and the right to vote.   Women's suffrage became the grounds from which women could put in place the various rights and laws that cater to needs specific to their lived experience.   In this episode, we're going to be discussing women's suffrage, the women's rights movement, and the social aspects of patriarchy. Joining us today is Susan Ware, author of various books including Beyond Suffrage: Women in the New Deal, Why They Marched: Untold Stories of the Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote, and many more.   The Basis for Women's Rights   Women's rights have always been human rights. This encompasses all women, not just a certain group or race. The basis for women's rights is to ensure that women are equal and to be given the same amount of rights and responsibilities as men.   It was discussed that one look at the structures and hierarchies that make up the society we live in today shows that there are power struggles, glass ceilings, and unequal handouts for opportunity. In most scenarios, men were found to be in these groups of privilege while women were marginalized and disenfranchised.    How, then, do we empower women so that they can operate on an equal playing field? According to Susan Ware, political power is paramount. If women never secured the right to vote nor hold office, they would have continued to go unrepresented and unheard. As a result, the win for women's suffrage helped secure a variety of other rights for women because it gave them the economic, political, social, and cultural tools they needed to succeed.   Again, women's rights are human rights. Being biologically female does not make you a lesser human being than men, and your rights shouldn't be different. The sexes' differences should only be in biological function, not in rights. Humanity, as a collective, has the responsibility of making sure that men and women are equal—regardless of race or religion.    Changing the Status Quo   The Nineteenth Amendment brought about the right of American women to vote. It drastically changed the Constitution. This drastic change was brought about by equally drastic actions; it called for the struggles and efforts of so many people, with supporters carrying out rallies and marches, before finally achieving women's suffrage.   Another law that greatly affected African Americans is The Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed discriminatory voting practices against African Americans. Harassment, intimidation, and physical violence discouraged African Americans from practising their right to vote. As a result, they were unable to fully wield their political power even though they were already allowed to vote.    This also concerned African American women as they faced not only sexism but racism as well. It's an indication that the struggles of marginalized communities do intersect and are doubly felt by certain groups. The fight for women's rights isn't just limited to the right to vote, but concerns a broader movement that also shares its struggles with other social movements.    No one ever achieves total success when it comes to social movements, and the same can be said for women's rights. The struggle will always be an up and down battle of wins and losses. However, our takeaway shouldn't be to just give up, but must instead continue to fight for what's right and just. Additionally, educating and empowering the next generation ensures that the movement will live on.   It is time for us to acknowledge: there are patriarchal aspects that are ingrained into our norms and social structures. These aspects indirectly hold back women, and consequently, society in general. This also reinforces the perspective of a patriarchal view, and convinces individuals into thinking that this is normal.   Women's Solidarity and Its Relevance to Society   The notion that women have only recently been able to participate in the broader world is false. Both women and men have always built history, and will continue to build the path towards our future.    However, it is unfortunate that women have not always been given the credit they deserve. This is evident throughout our history, given the amount of notable male individuals compared to females. Because of this, it's important to educate people about the contributions that women have made throughout history.   Through the women's rights movement, a sense of solidarity and camaraderie was formed for those involved, especially women. This created a feeling of joy of being united towards a common goal. Working together and sharing their struggles has united women in realizing the rights they should have gotten from the beginning.   Empowering Women With TARTLE   With every little success, the human rights that women have been deprived of are lessening, and despite the frustrations that come with any social movement. We are now in an era that the previous generation could only dream of, and that is something to take pride in.    Within the local and even national levels, women are forming collectives and organizations that aim to tackle the problems that plague our society. These include the aforementioned women's rights, but also problems like climate change and pollution.   TARTLE's mission is to become one of the platforms and tools that women can use to champion their cause and make their voices heard. Interview Highlights: As Elena discusses, 'real vampyres' are those who feel a physical need to consume energy, whether it be blood or 'psychic' energy. As her research takes an inclusive, sexuological perspective, Elena suggests that this might be a sexual orientation for some. Her research into fetish identity explores the possible connections between this identity and vampyrism, as her data indicates that fetish identity is not a mental pathology, not a choice, and is not necessarily paired with sexual activity. She further notes that some religious and/or spiritual practices can sometimes assist in forming a framework for a person's identity - providing in some cases a safe place to explore this identity. While this is a very complex topic with no easy answers, Elena stresses that 'sexual diversity awareness' can help educate others, create realistic representations regarding the diversity of identity, and help to foster a sense of inclusiveness.RESOURCES Elena Sperner on Academia.edu: Elena Sperner | Linköping University - Academia.eduMA Thesis: (PDF) Fetish Identity: A Collaborative Auto-phenomenographic Approach to Reframe Sexual Fetishism | Elena Sperner - Academia.eduInstagram: Elena (@shatteringglassceiling) • Instagram-foto's en -video'sDr. John Edgar Browning on Academia.edu: John Edgar Browning | Savannah College of Art and Design - Academia.eduSelected articles: "The real vampires of New Orleans and Buffalo: a research note towards comparative ethnography" | John Edgar Browning - Academia.edu(PDF) "Looking Inside the Coffin: An Overview of Contemporary Human Vampirism and Its Relevance for Forensics Professionals" | John Edgar Browning and DJ Williams - Academia.edu"What they do in the shadows: my encounters with the real vampires of New Orleans" | John Edgar Browning - Academia.eduMerticus X is an active researcher and participant in the real vampire community since 1997. An overview of Jason Hunt's Book: Cornelius Van Til's Doctrine of God and Its Relevance for Contemporary Hermeneutics seeks to answer the question, "What does Van Til have to do with hermeneutics?" It is argued that some of the most relevant concerns in the field of contemporary hermeneutics are similar to those addressed by Van Til in the area of apologetics. Van Til's approach involved a self-conscious consistency between method and theology proper in order to reason according to the Christian worldview found in Scripture. Just as one's apologetic method should be consistent with the theology revealed in the Bible, so also should one's hermeneutic. This work not only argues that Van Til has an important place in the hermeneutical discussion, but also demonstrates his place in terms of the main contours in his doctrine of God. In doing so, certain influences on evangelical hermeneutics are considered according to consistency with theology proper. Lastly, a Van Tillian hermeneutic is applied to the often-debated issue concerning the New Testament use of the Old Testament. Polish educator Janusz Korczak set out to remake the world just as it was falling apart. In the 1930s his Warsaw orphanage was an enlightened society run by the children themselves, but he struggled to keep that ideal alive as Europe descended into darkness. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the children's champion and his sacrifices for the orphans he loved. We'll also visit an incoherent space station and puzzle over why one woman needs two cars. Intro: Elbert Hubbard and his wife decided on a final gesture aboard the sinking Lusitania. E.E. And how can I find buried treasure when all I’m wearing is this garland of mugwort? And what’s all this about human sacrifice?
