John welcomes Rahm Emanuel—former Democratic Illinois congressman, White House chief of staff, mayor of Chicago, U.S. ambassador to Japan, and likely 2028 presidential candidate—to discuss the lessons of the Jimmy Kimmel conniption; how the broadcast networks could band together to beat back Donald Trump's regulatory and legal campaign against them; and the strategy and tactics his party should employ in the battle over shutting down the government. Rahm also flays congressional Republicans for putting their "manhood in a lockbox" when it comes to Trump, and challenge Wall Street's titans to take him on over his efforts to undermine the Fed. In 1980, the world of arcade games got a jolt that changed the gaming world forever. That's when a round yellow fellow with a large set of chompers known as Pac-Man first came on the scene. It's now been 45 years since the game was first imported to the US from Japan as PuckMan, a name that was quickly changed. It's interesting to note that, in the original game, the few players who completed all levels simply landed on a garbled “kill screen.” How is it that a game with no defined way to even “win” managed to take hold and never let go? Chris Morris, an independent journalist and editor who specializes in the video game and consumer electronics industries, joins USA TODAY's The Excerpt to discuss the outsized cultural impact of Pac-Man.Have feedback on the show? The murder of three young girls at a Taylor Swift dance class in Southport last year had a deep impact on the country. This week, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited their schools to see how the communities are recovering. Pod Save the King host Ann Gripper and Mirror royal reporter Charlotte Foster reflect on why William and Kate's return matters. And they also discuss the latest strand of the royal Epstein scandal, as a leaked email from the Duchess of York from 2011 led to multiple charities dropping their association with her. They also catch up on Edward and Sophie's adventures in Japan and a 116-year-old admirer of King Charles. And with Charlotte having moved to the UK from Australia earlier this year, they discuss views of the royal family Down Under and whether it is on the road to being a Republic. She visits an exclusive private members club in the heart of London's West end to talk to Rupert Wesson, a director and coach at the British etiquette institution Debrett's. And she hears from Japanese language tutor Chika Nakagawa about the rules that govern mealtimes in Japan.Plus what if you are thrown into a world you weren't prepared for? Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Mount Fuji is at once instantly familiar and seemingly immutable, yet it always remains strange and changeable. Its postcard-perfect peak is known around the world as a wonder of nature and a symbol of Japan. But behind that outline lies a far more complicated history.Over the centuries, Fuji's eruptions devastated farmland and terrified villagers. Revered as a sacred presence, its divine inhabitants changed with shifts in belief and power. Once locally known, Fuji later became claimed as a national emblem, its slopes inspiring poetry, painting, and pilgrimage—and serving as the stage for political and economic disputes. In Fuji: A Mountain in the Making (Princeton, 2025), Andrew Bernstein traces this layered story from the mountain's surprisingly recent geological beginnings to its recognition as a World Heritage Site. The result is a portrait of a place both familiar and unsettled: a mountain still in the making, continually remade by the humans who live with it, use it, revere it, and visit it.For show notes and more, go to the Historically Thinking Substack page for this episode.

Happy Spooky Wednesday, everyone! We're heading across the world this week to talk about one of the most haunted skyscrapers: Sunshine 60 in downtown Ikebukuro, Toshima, Tokyo, Japan! Built on the site of the former Sugamo Prison, where World War II war criminals and other prisoners were held and executed. Reports of ghostly sightings, floating fireballs, strange noises, and accidents have circulated since the building's construction in the mid-1970s. It's even said that this morbid history is the reason they gave it such a bright and shiny name! But a name alone can't erase this land's history, and it can't hide the ghosts prowling the grounds.

By the end of the Second World War, more than seventy million people across the globe had been killed, most of them civilians. Cities from Warsaw to Tokyo lay in ruins, and fully half of the world's two billion people had been mobilized, enslaved, or displaced. In 1942, historian Peter Fritzsche offers a gripping, ground-level portrait of the decisive year when World War II escalated to global catastrophe. With the United States joining the fight following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, all the world's great powers were at war. The debris of ships sunk by Nazi submarines littered US beaches, Germans marauded in North Africa, and the Japanese swept through the Pacific. Military battles from Singapore to Stalingrad riveted the world. But so, too, did dramas on the war's home fronts: battles against colonial overlords, assaults on internal “enemies,” massive labor migrations, endless columns of refugees. With an eye for detail and an eye on the big story, Fritzsche takes us from shipyards on San Francisco Bay to townships in Johannesburg to street corners in Calcutta to reveal the moral and existential drama of a people's war filled with promise and terror.BUY THE BOOK
