Junto a nuestros colaboradores Lluís Puebla y Gonzalo Puebla debatimos sobre A Perfect Circle, The Travelling Wilburys, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes o Velvet Revolver, entre otros. Y como siempre también hacemos un repaso a algunas noticias destacadas de la semana, la agenda de conciertos, los charts, y al final, las recomendaciones de Oído, Visto, Leído. Enjoy!

Interview by Kris PetersQuinceañera - the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood; the term is also used for the celebrant herself.Sounds like cause to celebrate and an even greater cause to party, which is exactly what Me First And The Gimme Gimmes did when they ‘crashed' the coming-of-age ceremony of a young lady by the name of Madison. Not that anyone should be surprised seeing twenty years earlier the band had done the same thing at Johnny's Bar Mitzvah but as they say, why let somebody else's inhibition spoil what could be a great party for yourself? Not only did the band perform to an unwelcoming audience at said ceremony, they also recorded the set and invite one and all to share the special occasion when they release BLOW IT…AT MADISON'S QUINCEAÑERA! on June 14.HEAVY sat down earlier today with frontman Spike Slawson to find out more details in all of their punk drenched glory. We start by asking if he still gets nervous about impending album releases."Absolutely," he nodded. "It was our first Quinceañera party, and it's intended to be awkward and comic and tragic all at once, and so if it is a success it's likely going to be excruciating and in the moment, if that makes sense. It's very nerve-wracking. We vetted the contestants that won the dubious prize of having us play their Quinceañera party, and we wanted to make sure there were no natural allies in attendance. Nobody that knew who we were or was going to be inclined to liking us or our performance. That was very important to us, and it was the right decision. But when I was about to go out and actually face the crowd, it was… difficult. It was a challenge. But, we had a good time. The crowd eventually turned around. I think we finally played a song from this Millennium and that made a big difference I think."In the full interview, Spike explains what a Quinceañera actually is, opening with Black Sabbath and if, in hindsight, he would have chosen a different song, the in between song banter and keeping the recording authentic, how Madison liked the show, using a horn section for the first time, how he would describe Me First & The Gimme Gimmes to someone who had never heard them before and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
9 years since the last album, CJ Ramone and Spike Slawson discuss the new album "Me First & the Gimme Gimmes ¡Blow It…at Madison's Quinceañera!" - the victories and challenges of the band, disgruntled audience members, picking annoying songs to cover and what's next for the band. Topic Include: What is a quinceañera? MFATGG music wasn't familiar to 15 year old girls Traditional Spanish songs in the album Making the live album at a quinceañera MFATGG is a live band – best way to capture them on record Spike and band enjoys the live awkward moments A nasty email from a disgruntled audience member Dealing with difficult audience members American schlager culture / antagonizing the audience The process of selecting Madison for the quinceañera The family struggled through parts of the show Comparing to MFATGG Ruin Johnny's Bar mitzvah album The quinceañera was filmed, when will we see it? MFATGG hearing back from artists they covered CJ comparing MFATGG to Ramones doing “Acid Eaters” Spike hates the original versions of songs MFATGG play How are the songs selected for a MFATGG project? Nate screws up the “Queen of Hearts” lyrics What other songs would Spike like to cover? They like covering songs that give them negative responses Folding in punk riffs into covers Memories of Steve Soto and Manic Hispanic Will there be more MFATGG albums in the near future? Interview by Kris PetersFew punk bands around the world have had the same impact as legendary California outfit Lagwagon.Since 1989 the brash upstarts have released nine studio albums through Fat Wreck Chords and toured relentlessly all over the globe, each time stepping further out from the underground band status they have been tagged with.Such is the success afforded Lagwagon they had one of their songs - May 16 - featured in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 alongside Rancid, Green Day and Offspring. While not enjoying the breakout success afforded those bands, Lagwagon have remained content with their role in a musical revolution, shunning the mainstream in favour of the working class groundswell and cementing their music in the hearts of many purists.Next week Lagwagon return to Australia and New Zealand for their special fan By Request Tour, with vocalist Joey Cape joining HEAVY to discuss the shows."We've been doing this for so long that I often forget," Cape laughed during the intro. "I love coming out there," he continued. "It wasn't that long ago that I was there. I did some solo shows and I did a tour with Me First And The Gimme Gimmes so two times in a year… that's pretty great."We ask him what non-essential items he always travels with on tour."Ooof, fuck, that's tough," he stalled. "I'm a light packer. It's a hassle to carry too much stuff (laughs). I guess I could say Nicorette gum. You can get it anywhere, but I always bring a boatload of that shit with me because I'm such a nicotine addict. That's all I can think of… Maybe reading glasses. I'll often bring ten pairs of glasses in case I lose them, it's totally dumb. But I guess those are kind of essential. You can't see without them (laughs). And me without nicotine… not fun for anybody."As the name of the tour suggests, fans were invited to vote for what songs they wanted to hear Lagwagon play, so we ask Cape if the band had much interest in that idea."We did," he offered. "It's funny, because it's always a risk when you do these kinds of things. I don't know that Lagwagon's ever done this before, but I've done it quite a few times with solo shows, especially the streaming ones. And it's risky. Because you never know, there might be a whole bunch of people that just want that one song that you just can't do, you know what I mean? And the reality is, that never happens. Bands that don't have hits, still have hits. There's just popular songs, and there's about four of them that 90% of the requests are always for. It's like, 'oh, man, alright, we'll do that for you guys' (laughs). We don't do that in every single show we play (laughs). I haven't actually looked at the submissions yet, so in theory, what you do is you do a different set for each town. Now, we've run into a little bit of trouble with that. Our great big giant guitar player is not able to join us because he has had some health issues, and we just found out that he cannot come. I may not be doing the right thing saying this - you're the first to hear of it - but because of that we're going to have to use a fill-in guy, so he's gonna have his work cut out."In the full interview, Joey tells us if there are any songs he is hoping aren't on the request list, playing on a cruise ship in Sydney, what we can expect from Lagwagon live, the early days of the band, resisting the lure of mainstream, his three commandments of punk and more.

Those who've been following the trajectory of modern-day guitar hero Chris Shiflett — outside of his role in FOO FIGHTERS — will already know of his musical mission to unite his SoCal rock roots and Nashville influences to create a fresh new sound altogether. In his latest installment, the longtime country-influenced-rocker called upon a couple of Nashville's finest practitioners of rock-influenced-country, Jaren Johnston (THE CADILLAC THREE) and John Osborne (BROTHERS OSBORNE),to join in on his brand new single, "Black Top White Lines". In their initial writing session, the trio kept throwing in line after line until the story was mapped out. Without spoiling the ending for anybody, Shiflett hints, "Thematically it felt like it turned a classic country trope on its head a little."Arriving on the heels of 2022's "Born & Raised" and "Long Long Year", "Black Top White Lines" picks up right where Shiflett left off; albeit a bit more amplified. The quick-tempo song opens with a wall of unison guitars and doesn't once let up. Thick stacks of different guitar tones (some of which are provided by legendary session man Tom Bukovac and uber-talented multi-instrumentalist Charlie Worsham) ride the pulsing groove provided by drums and bass with lead licks punctuating the bars between each verse. Written with Johnston and Osborne via Zoom in the middle of 2020, it wasn't until Shiflett and Johnston were working out which songs to record that they realized just how rad "Black Top White Lines" could be. "Jaren and I were going over song ideas, and it'd been a minute since we wrote it, so when we re-visited the track he was like, 'Dude you gotta record this one…It's a banger!'," remembers Shiflett. "Right away in the studio I could tell it was a bit of a left turn for me musically but that's also what I like about it.""Black Top White Lines" is the first listen from a brand new Shiflett album due out in 2023 via his new label home at Blue Élan Records, the Los Angeles-based independent label celebrating its ninth anniversary this year. Fans will hear more about the Jaren Johnston-produced LP in the coming months but can count on hearing an album that represents Shiflett's fully-realized vision of connecting L.A. to Nashville. "A big part of my inspiration to work with Jaren on this record was because I knew he'd push me out of my comfort zone into new territory," Shiflett says.Punk veteran. Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee. Americana and rock songwriter. Modern-day guitar hero. For more than 25 years, Shiflett has blurred the lines between genre and generation, balancing his full-band projects with a thriving solo career. Named "Americana's biggest rockstar" by Rolling Stone, Shiflett has played a crucial role in shaping the sound and scope of modern-day rock music as a longtime member of the FOO FIGHTERS. He's also an alum of California-based punk rock bands NO USE FOR A NAME and ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES. Shiflett's latest releases refocus his attention on a mix of country twang and rock and roll bang, showcasing the full range of his musical abilities.Shiflett, a member of Foo Fighters since 1999, will release his third solo album later this year. Lost At Sea builds a bridge between his native California and Nashville, where Shiflett has become a frequent visitor, performing on the Grand Ole Opry one minute and collaborating with Music City tastemakers like The Cadillac Three frontman Jaren Johnston and legendary producer Dave Cobb the next.Support the show
Interview by Erin EddyAnyone who is a fan of the SoCal skater punk scene of the 90's will know the name Joey Cape and if you don't know his name then you definitely know his voice; a distinct vocal style that makes Lagwagon instantly recognisable. Or you may be more of a Bad Astronaut fan. Either way, Joey is a veteran of the punk scene, and his bands have earnt their place as staples of the genre. It's been a long time between visits to Australia for the punk rock legend, so in early 2023 he's making up for lost time. Not only will Joey be touring with another of his projects, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, he's slotting in a bunch of solo shows around the country while he's here, also.Joey takes care of guitar duties for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, a long standing favourite amongst the skater punk community for their fun, fast and ferocious covers that put a punk spin on popular songs. The Gimmes are a band comprised of notable musicians synonymous with the genre (just don't use the term ‘super group' if you don't want to cause an eye roll response in Mr Cape, as HEAVY learned!), including but never limited to Fat Mike of NOFX, Spike Slawson of Swingin' Utters and Dave Raun, of Lagwagon. The Australian leg of the 2023 tour for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes is one of thoserescheduled-from-forever-ago post-Covid jobs. What this means for us is the added bonus of now having Joey Cape solo shows at our disposal. Joey told HEAVY that he spent a “dangerous amount of time” in lockdown on his own, which he maintains was actually beneficial to him once he got past the confusion of it all. It allowed him time to pursue a bunch of things he otherwise wouldn't have turned his hand to, but ultimately when he needed healing, it was music that he turned to.Joey's solo record A Good Year To Forget is aptly titled for a record cataloguing one's experience of 2020, yet also something of a juxtaposition in that the healing power of music incites you to reflect back on it with some fondness, for it sure did teach us all a bunch of things about ourselves.HEAVY spoke with Joey about getting through the trying times of the pandemic, his various musical projects and what he plans on getting up to in Australia. For Joey, not only was 2020 a year of illness (Joey himself contracted Covid and spent a gruelling period of time hospitalised), lockdowns and mandates, but a year in which he lost a parent and experienced the end of a 20 year marriage. A Good Year To Forget is his diary of catharsis and he will be taking these songs to stages for intimate shows across Australia in between shows with the Gimmes from January 31 st , 2023.

Eva Walker is a founding member, guitarist and singer for Seattle based The Black Tones. With one full length record (Cobain and Cornbread) and a Sub Pop single under their belts, The Black Tones are embarking on their first North American tour this fall. In this episode, Eva shares her experience working with both Jack Endino and Don Farwell, the importance of a groove and the role trust plays in their writing and performance. We learn why Eva and Cedric share a free form of expression and how the root of that free spirit lies in both family and the story of a lifelong educator and a bank robber. The two Seattleites discuss their experiences as transplants and how they were both psyched to be a part of the Sub Pop family. Eva hips us to some new bands and we hear a couple tunes. This episode kicks off an intermittent series that will feature a single song in order to both reveal how Dylan's performance of it changes over the decades and also to hear how the song changes in the hands and voices of fellow travelers. The song for tonight is "The Times They Are A-Changin'," written in September of 1963, recorded in October of 1963, and released on January 3, 1964. In "20 Pounds of Headlines," we cover Monday's Spring 2022 Tour announcement and itinerary and we also cover the announcement from Sony Music Entertainment that it purchased the commercial rights to all of Dylan's master recordings in July of 2021. In "Who Did It Better?" we ask you to tell us who did "The Times They Are A-Changin'" better: A Whisper In The Noise or Mountain? Go to our Twitter page @RainTrains to vote.

Outback Recordings Podcast: Punk Rock Interviews, Insights & Inspiriation
In Session 31 I get to talk to Joey Cape, the lead singer of Lagwagon. He's also in Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, as well as releasing music and touring as a solo artist. I had so much fun talking to him about the upcoming Lagwagon record "Railer" and just listening to what he has to share after more than 30 years of experience as a songwriter, musician, producer and member of one of the most influential punk rock bands of all time. I hope you enjoy this relaxed conversation as much as I did!In this episode you'll discover:…how long Lagwagon actually exists…that Lagwagon are terrible about anniversaries…how long it took to write and produce their new record „Railer“…why „Railer“ sounds like a „classic Lagwagon record“…why it can be worth trying to limit yourself and work within time restraints…what the different between a producer and an engineer is…what it means to make a „Joey record“…what the lyrics of „Railer“ and „Let Me Know When You Give Up“ are about…how Joey approaches writing lyrics and why having his writing partner, Asher Simon, is so important to him…what writer’s block often really means and how you can overcome it…what „Railer“ actually means…what Joey’s introduction to punk rock was like…how the punk rock scene changed over the years in Joey’s opinion…how Joey happened to become a singer…which top 3 songs Joey would put on a cover recordAnd much more…Enjoy! For complete show notes, links and additional info go to:www.benedikthain.com/orp31If you have questions, suggestions, ideas or guest requests, please send an email to:podcast@outbackrecordings.com

Jackson Bradford might have the most interesting job on the planet. The Milwaukee native spends at least half of each year wearing a cop costume and short-shorts and sporting a mustache as part of his lovable "heel with a switch" character that Masked Intruder fans know as "Officer Bradford." The pop-punk villain's unique line of work has taken him to Europe, Asia, Australia, and much of North America. Between Masked Intruder's tour runs with Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, Officer Bradford met host Tyler Maas on the Vanguard patio for an off-duty chat about how he landed the unorthodox occupation, ways the persona has changed with the growing number of police-related tragedies, and the body-positive "Pants Off Dance Off" parties he co-hosts when he's not on the road.
JOEY CAPE (Lagwagon, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes), CHRIS CRESSWELL (The Flatliners), BRIAN WAHLSTROM (Scorpios) and Serina Chang hang out at the Walnut Room in Denver, Colorado to discuss German humor, Barry Manilow, Competitive Whistling, First musical loves and the ONE WEEK RECORDS label and tour! This episode features the one week records songs, "Airplane Food," by Brian Wahlstrom and "Meet Me in the Shade" by Chris Cresswell. The episode ends with a live recording of the One Week Records gang playing, "International You Day," by Tony Sly and No Use For a Name.
It's A Shame About Ray (1992)

Dear Swiss Cheese, I am writing you today because there is something I must ask of you. Now, I know that you and I have had our differences in the past. We haven't always gotten along. In fact, of all the cheeses, you just happen to be my very least favorite, with your awkward holes and your mildly nutty flavor. So, you can imagine how difficult it is for me today to swallow my pride and ask of you a favor. You see, Swiss Cheese... I love my Ham. No, I mean, like, I REALLY love it... and lately, I've been getting this vibe from you that you might be trying to come between me and my Ham. Truth be told, Swiss Cheese, I just don't know if I can compete. If push came to shove, I don't know for sure if my Ham would pick you over me. I couldn't take it, Swissy, I just couldn't TAKE it if my Ham were to leave me! I'd die inside! Living a life without it's salty meatiness... bologna would just never suffice. So please, Swiss Cheese... I'm begging of you... please don't take my Ham. Sincerely, Annie Musical Guest: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes performing "Jolene" and "End of the Road" Impromptu Songs: * Swiss Cheese * Danny's Song, as sung by Abe Lincoln and Jimmy AF Venable (deleted from actual show due to terrifyingness) Tales of Wonder: * Annie and Colleen share their families' favorite traditional ways to stuff themselves silly during the holidays * The PARROT BAG! * The Cranberries' "Linger"- true meaning exposed! * Cool new fan art! Most Memorable Lines Taken Out of Context: * "Matchmaker, matchmaker give me a Mikey Give him big hair, make it all spikey!" * "Even though your nose is runny, I'm so in love with ya honey..." * "That's a great way to start your Christmas... with clam gas."
