With Star Wars and Mortal Kombat commanding the spotlight in geek culture, Who Would Win: Unleashed brings you a fight so intense it's almost dangerous to imagine. Eric Holmes steps into the ring with Scorpion, the undead ninja whose vengeance-fueled arsenal is as brutal as it is diverse. We're talking hellfire blasts that burn through any defense, teleportation attacks that turn distance into a death trap, and that iconic spear strike—“Get over here!”—that drags enemies straight into their doom. Eric's not just talking fatalities; he's building a case for a supernatural predator who can fight across realms and finish the job with flawless execution. This isn't a kombatant—it's a relentless force of nature.Across the battlefield, James Gavsie unleashes Mace Windu, the Jedi Master whose mastery of Vaapad makes him one of the most dangerous Force-users in the galaxy. Wielding his signature purple lightsaber, Windu channels dark side energy without succumbing to it, turning an opponent's aggression into his own weapon. James breaks down how Windu's precognition, devastating speed, and raw combat mastery could cut through Scorpion's relentless offense, even in the face of supernatural powers. It's Netherrealm fury versus Jedi discipline, hellfire versus lightsaber, and only one warrior walks away. There's only one way to find out who claims victory—press play.Strap in—this is Who Would Win: UNLEASHED at its finest.Email - whowouldwinunleashed@gmail.comYou can now support us on Patreon at Patreon.com/WhoWouldWinShowCheck out the Who Would Win Unleashed YouTube Channel!Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/whowouldwinshowFollow us on X/Twitter: @jamesgavsie @whowouldwinshowFollow us on IG and Threads: @WhoWouldWinShow @jamesgavsie @theericholmesCheck out the Who Would Win Merch Store:https://saywerd.co/collections/who-whould-win-merchSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In episode 201 of Film Focus, I share my thoughts on the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 and the second trailer for Tron: Ares. Both films debut in October, and I am excited yet cautious about both. Mortal Kombat 2 is a sequel to the 2021 film, which I enjoyed but recognised had several issues. I am cautiously optimistic about the sequel, given the cast and interviews from the creative team, which are promising a better film this time. As for Tron: Ares, I have wanted another movie in this universe, considering how Tron: Legacy ended in 2010. The universe has untapped potential for more adventures. However, Ares appears to be a soft reboot, which has so far dismissed most of the core elements of the previous film and is focusing on a new story with a darker tone and a slightly controversial lead actor as the protagonist. So, what did I think of these trailers? Well, check out the episode to find out. Tune in to this spoiler-free review to discover more! Mike shares actors who took home million dollar paydays despite being on screen for a little amount of time. Some actors earned a million dollars for each minute they appeared on screen! While others were paid for movies that were never even released or that they ended up being cut from. It’s wild! In the Movie Review, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing face their most daunting challenge yet as they defend Earth from Galactus and Silver Surfer. Does it do a good job setting up the next phase of the MCU, what was lacking in the story and who stole the show. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Mortal Kombat 2 starring Karl Urban as Johnny Cage who is an actor forced into the role of champion of Earth in a universal fighting tournament to the death. Mike talks about his history with the video game, why this movie seems to lean more into the fun and violence but questions why all movies like this are starting to look the same? In this episode, we're diving deep into the world where movies and video games collide!
Frank is joined by Aaron from Fandom Portals to revisit 2021's Mortal Kombat reboot and dig into everything from fight choreography to character arcs and deeper themes. They discuss how the film hit differently as a post-lockdown release, the smart (and messy) choices around Cole Young, and what to expect from Mortal Kombat 2. Plus, they highlight standout performances, favorite fights, and how the film balances brutal action with just the right amount of absurdity. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 Introduction and guest spotlight: Aaron from Fandom Portals 02:00 What Fandom Portals is all about and their most interesting guests 04:59 Why Mortal Kombat was the pick for this episode 07:13 Two-minute rundown of the 2021 film 09:38 Remembering Mortal Kombat's unique place during the pandemic 13:04 The planned trilogy and where the story is headed 14:00 Our first memories playing Mortal Kombat 16:00 Favorite characters and button-mashing nostalgia 18:00 Comedy and fatalities: Finding the right tone 20:03 Breaking down Arcana and how it enhances the story 25:12 Character depth: Cole, Raiden, and Sub-Zero's arcs 30:00 Legacy, trauma, and family themes in Mortal Kombat 32:00 Highlight performances: Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson 38:11 Martial arts authenticity and cultural details 41:15 The final fight: Scorpion and Cole vs Sub-Zero 43:00 Sonya vs Kano: Underdogs, traps, and laser chaos 46:00 Talking stereotypes and what modern adaptations can improve 48:00 The score: Hits, misses, and video game influence Key Takeaways: Mortal Kombat landed during the pandemic as a fun, communal theater experience. The new Arcana system brought purpose and emotional weight to the characters' powers. Kano's over-the-top personality worked thanks to Josh Lawson's fully committed performance. Scorpion and Sub-Zero's rivalry represents generational trauma, vengeance, and redemption. The fights were creative and often layered with emotional or thematic stakes. The film's costume and stunt work add more depth than it gets credit for. The score was ambitious but sometimes pulled focus away from the action. Quotes: “You don't need a perfect movie to have a meaningful one—and this gave us something to rally around.” “Sub-Zero was cool. Literally. He was the kid-you-didn't-let-your-brothers-pick fighter.” “Kano's the guy you roll your eyes at and still want to grab a beer with.” “The deeper themes are there if you want them—generational pain, redemption, and honoring legacy.” Call to Action: Like what you heard? This week on the Toy Power Podcast; we are still down a Scot, as he is still unwell. But that will not slow him down in contributing to this ep! Before we get into the main segments, we chat about Ben & Frank's latest Plastic Addiction, in the form of Transformers Blokees! Prior to chatting about the Superman Film itself, we focus on the Toy likeness compared to what the actor actually looks like! With a little Jurassic World banter in between. Then, without another moment to spare, we get right into the James Gunn driven film itself! We chat towards our Cinema experiences and start off with a non-spoiler discussion; before we head into a chat about the whole Film itself! Giving it our typical DVG rating out of 19 too. Then changing gears, we introduce a New segment - named: Variant Schmariant! We each pick two variants of a pre-existing character (in toy form) that just doesn't need to exist. We unearth some quite silly versions of characters that had a legitimate Toy Release; that clearly logic was not a concern at all!! Plus we tie a nice bow around the proposed Nick-Names for both Frank & Scot. Enjoy!!Support the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
