Welcome to our all-new collaborative series, "Hidden Levels," in which we team up with 99% Invisible to explore how the world of video games has impacted the world beyond. We'll dive deep into how games are made and designed, exploring everything from the history of the joystick to the faithful recreation of nature in digital spaces. Whether you are a lifelong gamer or have never picked up a controller, "Hidden Levels" uncovers how games have quietly changed culture, technology, and the way we see the world...starting with a '90s arcade classic. Developer Mark Turmell worked at Midway, which was known for iconic games like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Mortal Kombat. His creation of NBA Jam in 1993 pushed the company in a new direction. It debuted at the height of the Chicago Bulls' dynasty, aiming to capture the energy of professional basketball in a high-octane, over-the-top format. The game was a hit out of the gate, captivating players with its digitized graphics (with the heads of real NBA players) and fantasy gameplay where players could become "on fire." At the heart of the NBA Jam gaming experience was the voice of its announcer, Tim Kitzrow. Turmell and the game's sound team had realized they needed a voice that could match the game's energy and cut through the din of an arcade, without the budget for a professional NBA commentator. So they turned to Kitzrow, an improv comedian and journeyman actor, who was initially hired by Midway for pinball voiceovers — it was just a fun side gig. He had no idea that his work on NBA Jam would make such a lasting impact on the industry. Kitzrow modeled his energetic, flamboyant delivery on NBA announcer Marv Albert, infusing it with his own ad-libbed, short, and punchy catchphrases like "REJECTED!" and the game's most famous line, "Boomshakalaka!"—which was suggested by an artist and inspired by funk group Sly and the Family Stone. The game became a monumental hit, reportedly making $1 billion in quarters in its first year, with its catchphrases entering basketball vernacular. *** Credits: This episode of "Hidden Levels" was produced by James Parkinson, edited by Emmett FitzGerald, and mixed by Martín Gonzalez. Original music by Swan Real, Jamilah Sandoto, and Paul Vaitkus. Series theme by Swan Real and Paul Vaitkus. This story was adapted from James Parkinson's podcast, Gameplay. The Neoliberal Round Podcast by Renaldo McKenzieEpisode Script: “Faith, Film, and the Future Featuring Abria Jackson”Creator/Host: Renaldo C. McKenzie[Intro]Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Neoliberal Round Podcast. I'm your host, Rev. Renaldo McKenzie.Today, I'm honored to sit with the dynamic, ever-charming, and deeply talented Abria Jackson—an actress, mentor, and graduate student whose career and calling blend art, faith, and service.Abria recently starred in Night of Violence, which opened at the prestigious FrightFest in the UK. She traveled to London with her mother to witness the premiere, and we'll talk about that powerful experience. We'll also dive into her work on Law & Order: Organized Crime, her inspirations from Viola Davis and Halle Berry, her mentoring of young women, and her pursuit of a master's degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology.[Segment 1 – The UK Premiere]Renaldo: What was it like, sitting in that London theater with your mom, watching your film open FrightFest?Abria: “It was very emotional. My father passed away a couple of years ago, and he was so supportive of my dream. Knowing my mom was in the audience reminded me that I have people who love me and support me. I also felt like my dad was there, watching from heaven. My mom was cheering, even when no one else was, and people around her were cracking up—it was unforgettable.”Renaldo: What did it mean personally to have her there?Abria: “It felt full circle. God was reminding me to keep going, that I'm on the right path. The fact that my mom was alive and present for that moment—it meant everything.”[Segment 2 – Acting as Healing]Renaldo: You mentioned Catwoman, a Black rock star, and Tanya from Mortal Kombat as dream roles. Why those?Abria: “All three connect directly to my childhood. They'd heal my inner child. Acting was more than entertainment—it was spiritual. Growing up, life wasn't always glitter and rainbows. Acting gave me an outlet, and now keeping that inner child alive helps me bring truth to every role.”[Segment 3 – Balancing Faith, Career, and Self-Care]Renaldo: How do you balance school, career, and everything else?Abria: “I'm very intentional with my time. I write everything in my planner and make sure I hit my goals. But I also remind myself that you can't pour from an empty cup. Self-care matters. For me, that's $5 Tuesdays at the movies—it's my reset.”Renaldo: And your faith?Abria: “Faith keeps me going. My mom once bought a name meaning that said Aabria means faith. That's my story. When auditions don't come, when money's tight—faith carries me.”[Segment 4 – Mentorship & Psychology]Renaldo: Beyond acting, you're also co-leading a mentorship group for teen girls and pursuing a master's in counseling. What inspired that?Abria: “Even in high school, people would come up to me and share their lives. It felt like a gift God placed in me. Now I want to perfect that gift—get licensed, gain knowledge, and help people in ways that blend spirituality and service.”[Segment 5 – Vision & Legacy]Renaldo: Looking ahead, what legacy do you want to build?Abria: “When God calls me home, I want people to say my life was an act of faith. Of course, I want roles that move people. But more than that, I want to be remembered as someone who served—who gave advice, helped people, and carried them through. What profits a person to gain the world but lose their soul? Character and service—that's the legacy I want.”[Closing]Abria Jackson is more than an actress—she is a storyteller, a servant, and a woman of faith. From Philly to London, from film sets to mentorship circles, her journey reminds us that art and service can walk hand in hand. You can follow Abria on Instagram at @itsabriajackson and on TikTok under her name. And stay tuned for her upcoming TV series Losing My Pride, expected in 2026.Thank you for listening to The Neoliberal Round Podcast. Until next time—walk good.

Episode 72 of She Said It First is proof that even when the universe (and a fleet of airplanes) tries to sabotage them, Jerrilyn Lake (aka Indeskribeabull) and Lynee’ Monae will still deliver the laughs. In What Irritated Me the Most This Week, the ladies start by venting about nonstop turbulence—literal and metaphorical. From loud planes drowning out their recording to people who just won’t stop blocking your blessings, the segment is basically therapy with punchlines. As Jerrilyn says, sometimes life really is just one long flight with no peanuts. In Girl, What Happened, the conversation turns serious when they unpack a viral TikTok comparing doctors’ treatment of Black women to police treatment of Black men. The hosts share their own frustrating (and at times scary) medical experiences, dragging the racism baked into healthcare while clowning male OBGYNs who thought “fascinated with coochie” was a career goal. Between the jokes, they get real about how society confuses Black women’s strength with being pain-proof, and why more Black doctors—and more listening—are desperately needed. The ladies go in on Judge Lynn Toler’s revelation that she married a man with four kids and no money. Jerrilyn and Lynee’ respectfully disagree (read: roast it into the ground), pointing out that “companionship” doesn’t pay rent and love alone won’t keep the lights on. Finally, Girl Talk takes us from the waiting room to the dating pool, with hilarious first-date horror stories, from a man battling chopsticks like it was Mortal Kombat to another comparing salmon to… well, let’s just say it wasn’t flattering. They round things out By the end, between the planes, the shade, and the jokes, this episode proves that no amount of background noise can drown out the chemistry of these two. Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller drive up to the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, IL to talk with legendary comics painter Alex Ross. Known for Marvels, Kingdom Come, and decades of redefining superhero realism, Ross reflects on his career trajectory, his education at the American Academy of Art, his influences (from Neal Adams to Dave McKean), his early breaks with Now Comics and Leo Burnett storyboarding, and his transition into large-scale mural projects for Marvel and DC. The conversation ranges from comics history, realism in superhero depictions, variant cover economics, the physicality of superheroes, to America's appetite for dystopian narratives versus a return to the “pure Superman.” Ross is candid, funny, and deeply reflective about the comics medium, painting, and storytelling.     Name-Drop List Artists & Writers Alex Ross — https://www.alexrossart.com/ | @alexrossart Neal Adams – https://nealadams.com/ George Pérez – https://www.tcj.com/george-perez-1954-2022/ Jack Kirby – https://kirbymuseum.org/ Dave McKean – https://www.davemckean.com/ Neil Gaiman — neilgaiman.com | @neilhimself Chris Ware – https://art21.org/artist/chris-ware/ Jim Lee — https://www.dc.com/talent/jim-lee @jimlee Todd McFarlane — https://mcfarlane.com/ @toddmcfarlane Erik Larsen — https://imagecomics.com/creators/erik-larsen  @eriklarsen1138 John Tobias (Mortal Kombat) – https://www.mobygames.com/person/3326/john-tobias/ Tim Bradstreet — https://www.splashpageart.com/artistgalleryroom.asp?artistid=83 @timbradstreet Frank Casey (Ross's Superman model) – chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://news.wttw.com/sites/default/files/article/file-attachments/The%20process_Ross%20at%20work.pdf Institutions & Companies Dunn Museum (Libertyville, IL) — https://www.lcfpd.org/museum/ @lcfpd Marvel Comics — marvel.com | @marvel DC Comics — dc.com | @dccomics American Academy of Art (Chicago) — Leo Burnett (advertising) – https://dev.leoburnett.com/ Now Comics (Chicago, defunct) Eclipse Comics (defunct) FASA (publisher of Shadowrun, BattleTech) – https://shop.fasagames.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68 Mortal Kombat franchise — https://www.mortalkombat.com/en-us  @mortalkombat Pop Culture References Kingdom Come (DC) – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Come_(comics) Marvels (Marvel) – https://tv.apple.com/us/movie/the-marvels/umc.cmc.6nb1ii3n99o7rewjyq8whcsuu Shadowrun RPG – https://store.catalystgamelabs.com/collections/shadowrun Vampire: The Masquerade (White Wolf) – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire:_The_Masquerade The Boys (Amazon Prime) – https://www.primevideo.com/detail/The-Boys/0KRGHGZCHKS920ZQGY5LBRF7MA Invincible (Image Comics / Amazon) – https://www.amazon.com/INVINCIBLE-SEASON-1/dp/B08WJN83XZ Peacemaker (HBO) – https://www.hbomax.com/shows/peacemaker-2022/a939d96b-7ffb-4481-96f6-472838d104ca Brightburn (film) – https://tv.apple.com/us/movie/brightburn/umc.cmc.4pkvqa1b6mf30wtx66vor37fq Image: John Weinstein

Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris board the SAG Cartoon Express for another “classic” episode of ThePower Team. This time, it's an episode called Train Game, where there's a train full of kids under threat of explosion from Mr. Big from NARC, and the only hope of saving the day lies in the hands of Acclaim NES game D-listers. Fun! In Week Old News, the new Mortal Kombat movie gets a hefty delay, the EverCade lineup gets some Activision goodness, and ninjas are EVERYWHERE! How desperate. Finally, in The Checkpoint, Kris beat Bananza, but Dan didn't so he can't talk about why the final act cements it as one of Nintendo's all-time greats. Dan got his hands on Metal Gear Solid Delta and has been annoying everyone he know switch his Solid Snake impressions, and Kris got to spend a little time with the beautiful Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star crossed Worlds. And yes, that is the game's actual title now. Enjoy! HPR4459: How I got into tech

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Hello, I'm Wojciech (pronounciation available at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wojciech ), I'm a nerd from Poland, I work as a software engineer. I've found HPR about a year ago and wanted to record a show since. But life is busy. I'm trying it out, in a supermarket parking lot in my car. This is my second attempt, so we'll see how it works. How I got into tech? In a way I've kind of always been there. At least since I was a child. The story that I like to tell is when I was about 4 years old my cousing launched me Mortal Kombat on his Amiga computer and I got interested. That's my oldest tech related memory. As a kid I've mostly played video games. Mostly on clones of old 8-bit consoles like Atari 2600 or NES, later some unspecified models of Commodore and Schneider computers. I don't even remember what exact models they were. Got my first PC at about 10 years old, it was an Intel 486SX, 12 MB RAM, 850 MB HDD, running Windows 95. Still mostly playing games on the computer but, as it was running Windows, as you maybe know, with Windows come problems. Sometimes user-induced, but not always. Spoiler, it's been over 25 years and this trend continues. Around the same time my sister went to high school and got a Turbo Pascal textbook. This is what really got me interested in programming and that's when my interests and career in software development begun. Since that time I had a very good idea what I want to do in life. I just knew I wanted to work with computers, primarily doing software engineering. I went to a technical university, Wrocław University of Science and Technology. And there I got interested in other computer related things like networking and I also got into digital and analog electronics. Just because I really wanted to go that one level deeper, to learn about how computers work, and electronics in general. I also have other interests, but tech and non-tech related, like for example science fiction literature and I would like to record some shows about those in the future. We shall see. There is one specific story I want to tell, but I think I will save it for October. Why October? Because it is a workplace horror story about... Windows. Well, not really a horror story story, but it was really bizarre and can be described as such. In the meantime I don't want to promise anything. But maybe I will record a show about what I am currently doing at work, which is the topic of audit trail in software applications. But I am chaotic and may do something entirely different. We shall see. I think that's all I want to say today. I would really appreciate if you left some feedback. Was the audio OK, is my English enough, did I speak too fast? English is not my first language and I've noticed over the years that I really tend to speak too fast when using English. And that's it, thank you for listening. Hopefully we'll hear in the future from me. Provide feedback on this episode.

With Star Wars and Mortal Kombat commanding the spotlight in geek culture, Who Would Win: Unleashed brings you a fight so intense it's almost dangerous to imagine. Eric Holmes steps into the ring with Scorpion, the undead ninja whose vengeance-fueled arsenal is as brutal as it is diverse. We're talking hellfire blasts that burn through any defense, teleportation attacks that turn distance into a death trap, and that iconic spear strike—“Get over here!”—that drags enemies straight into their doom. Eric's not just talking fatalities; he's building a case for a supernatural predator who can fight across realms and finish the job with flawless execution. This isn't a kombatant—it's a relentless force of nature.Across the battlefield, James Gavsie unleashes Mace Windu, the Jedi Master whose mastery of Vaapad makes him one of the most dangerous Force-users in the galaxy. Wielding his signature purple lightsaber, Windu channels dark side energy without succumbing to it, turning an opponent's aggression into his own weapon. James breaks down how Windu's precognition, devastating speed, and raw combat mastery could cut through Scorpion's relentless offense, even in the face of supernatural powers. It's Netherrealm fury versus Jedi discipline, hellfire versus lightsaber, and only one warrior walks away. There's only one way to find out who claims victory—press play.Strap in—this is Who Would Win: UNLEASHED at its finest.Email - whowouldwinunleashed@gmail.comYou can now support us on Patreon at Patreon.com/WhoWouldWinShowCheck out the Who Would Win Unleashed YouTube Channel!Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/whowouldwinshowFollow us on X/Twitter: @jamesgavsie @whowouldwinshowFollow us on IG and Threads: @WhoWouldWinShow @jamesgavsie @theericholmesCheck out the Who Would Win Merch Store:https://saywerd.co/collections/who-whould-win-merchSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
