The Reverend Doctor Ayo Jordan, a native of Washington, DC, was raised and educated in Virginia. Her spiritual relationship began when she accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age and was baptized at Hungary Road Baptist Church in Glen Allen, Virginia. Dr. Ayo received and acknowledged the consecrated opportunity to be used by God and was licensed to preach the Gospel in 2005. Dr. Ayo accredits her ministerial introductions to her initial sermon which was a eulogy for her uncle and politician at the South African Consulate in Chicago, Illinois. That moment was the trajectory of Ayo's call to congregational ministry and community leadership.Embracing but not negating her Pentecostal roots, Ayo joined the Baptist church for spiritual growth, formation and educational experience in 2008. It was at the historic Gravel Hill Baptist Church, where Dr. Ayo became the youngest and 2nd ordained female minister in its history. In 2016, Dr. Ayo became the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care. An advocate for women, youth and young adults, Dr. Ayo is a popular preacher with a powerful voice and agent of change for the Body of Christ.Educated in the Henrico County School system and committed to education, Dr. Ayo attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; where she was an honor student. In this episode, you'll also hear:Dr. Bren's mission to help others explore, embrace, and excel in their God-given purposeHow journaling about your own process of growth can turn into a book that touches the lives of other peopleHow to be intentional in your focus and write directly for your target audienceThe importance of researching to find the right publisher for your bookDr. Bren's advice for writers who hesitate to step out in faith and share the message God has given them3 Phases of Breaking ForthDr. Bren Williams wrote her book, Breaking Forth 2 Destiny, with the goal of empowering Christians to overcome obstacles, explore their purpose, and embrace their God-given destiny. “Challenges can only be conquered when they are faced,” she explains. “So Breaking Forth 2 Destiny is simply an instrument that will help us deal with distractions that cause delay, overcome obstacles that hinder progress, step out of our comfort zones, and release the past to refocus on the present.”In the book, Dr. Bren breaks down this journey to embracing one's destiny into three phases:Break free: Being delivered by God to be able to achieve a breakthrough.Breakthrough: Overcoming challenges or difficult seasons in life.Break forth: Emerging from those challenges stronger and prepared to embrace a greater purpose.“Many of us can testify that ‘God brought me through' or ‘God brought me out,'” Dr. Bren says. “That's a breakthrough. Breaking forth takes us to the next level, the next dimension. You emerge with power, you emerge suddenly, and you emerge stronger, better, and wiser. In other words, it means to thrive and not just survive.”While writing, Dr. Bren took inspiration from her own journals and past experiences. She had seen firsthand how fear can keep people feeling stuck and unable to move forward, and wanted to inspire others with the hope that God can help them break free of fear and doubt and break forth into a greater destiny — just as He did for her. Narrowing FocusAfter deciding to write her book, however, Dr. Bren had to face and work through her own set of challenges. First, the topic she had chosen was simply too broad. She had to learn to narrow her focus and prioritize the core message she wanted her audience to receive instead of trying to fit all of her thoughts and ideas into the same book. Now, she advises aspiring authors to do the same. As you plan your book, take time to reflect on the topic and on your intentions for the book, and rely on God to help you focus on what matters the most — even if it means going at a slower pace than you would prefer. “Progress doesn't have to come in large segments,” Dr. Bren says. “It's a step. It's a journey. And it's not something that happens overnight.”Next, once Dr. Bren had begun to narrow her focus, she also had to keep her target audience at the forefront of her mind so she could write directly for them. She describes it as a process of elimination: As she prayed for the right words to help the people she knew she had been called to serve, she focused on deleting irrelevant content and adding information that aligned with her book's purpose of helping people step into their God-given destiny. Dr. Bren's story is an important reminder for us all. As writers, we often have many exciting ideas and want to include them all. But to really speak to our audience, we need to remember that the reader is looking for something specific, and it's our job to make it easy for them to determine if this particular book will give them what they're looking for. That means we've got to remove anything that doesn't quite fit. But don't worry — you can always use those ideas in another book later on!Lessons from PublishingAfter completing the book, Dr. Bren says the real work was just beginning. Now she had to find the right publisher, get her book out into the world, and market it so the right people could find and read it. This process taught her several lessons:Do your research: Not every publisher will be the right fit for your book. Be sure to research what they have to offer and ask questions so you know you're making the right choice.Quality over quantity: Make sure your book represents you and your God-given message well. Take your time and be intentional about producing the best-quality work you can.Invest in marketing and promotion: For your book to make an impact, people have to read it. And for people to read it, they have to know it exists.“No matter how great your product is, or what a great blessing you have in your hand,” Dr. Bren adds, “until it's in the hands of the readers, it's just good information.”So don't just stop at crafting a quality book and getting it published — you've got to do the work to get it into people's hands and entice them to actually read it so their lives will be changed by your message. Take a StepMaybe you, like Dr. Bren, have a message you know God has given you, but you have so many ideas that you aren't sure where to start. Or maybe you've been writing for a long time, but you hesitate to put yourself out there and get that book published. Whatever may be holding you back, Dr. Bren encourages you to simply take a step forward in faith and trust God to carry you the rest of the way. “Someone is waiting on what's locked up inside you,” she concludes. “I look at it as if I'm holding up and delaying someone's destiny if I am not obedient. So even if you're afraid, step out, and God will meet you. He will empower you and allow you to move forward by faith.” BIO:Reverend Dr. Brennetta C. Critical Race Theory is a deep dive into how race has been used to divide and conquer. It is not an accident that the majority has remained in power since slavery and even before slavery. Power has been maintained by inculcating everyone to maintain the status quo and then using laws to normalize the power of the majority. This theoretical lens is now being used as a political wedge issue. This episode skillfully uncovers how and why with facts, figures and enlightening discussion.  Dr Dudley and Dr Emerson's provocative conversation will empower some and infuriate others. What is the connection between the Virginia governor's race, Toni Morrison, and Mark Twain? Those are the ties made in today's conversation with James Henry Harris, Distinguished Professor of Homiletics and Pastoral Theology and a research scholar in religion and humanities at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. He's also author of the book “N: My Encounter with Racism and the Forbidden Word in An American Classic,” a memoir recounting a semester spent in a graduate course studying Mark Twain's “Huckleberry Finn,” where the n-word is used more than 200 times, which granted a sort of permission to the white professor and students (Harris was the only Black student) to freely use the unabbreviated version of the word themselves. This experience acts as the foundation for today's conversation, which examines the intersection of Toni Morrison's own studies (and support) of Mark Twain and his work, and how the effort to ban her work is being used by the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Virginia. For Episode 2 of Respect Circles, we're bringing you our very first guest, and we are so excited to be introducing you to her today. Dr. Alesia Johnson, or “Lisa” as she usually is called, has been an important part of Respect Circles since the beginning, and she always brings such wisdom and depth to our conversations (Lisa also happens to be AJ's sister!) Lisa is a product of Richmond City Public Schools and retired from teaching in that same school system after serving and working for over thirty years. She is a certified Diversity, Culture Competence, and Social Justice Trainer for the Virginia Education Association. She completed her undergraduate studies and some graduate studies at Virginia State University and additional graduate studies at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union, where she earned a Master of Divinity degree with honors. She has an earned Doctor of Ministry in Formational Counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio. Lisa is a member of First Shiloh Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, VA, where she works as a counselor with victims of sexual and domestic abuse; couples counseling, teen girls, and individuals who are sensing a need to live life differently. There she also serves as a senior caregiver, a small group facilitator, the Program Director, and a member on the healing care team for the Healing Place ~ Center for Christian Counseling and Spiritual Formation. She leads workshops and seminars nationwide and serves as a speaker/facilitator and preacher for conferences. Prior to her call to ministry at First Shiloh, she was a member at The Saint Paul's Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia for over forty years, where she was licensed and ordained to preach the gospel. She is the Chaplain for the Henrico County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, serves on the Board of Directors for Hope for Families (Camp Hope), and also the Council for Richmond Hill. Lisa enjoys teaching, facilitating, fellowshipping with her family and friends, worshipping, and studying the word of God. She has a passion for the marginalized and privileged, the victim and perpetrator, and believes that we all deserve healing. She has traveled extensively to share the gospel. It is her desire to be used by God to serve as a wounded healer, bringing others to a place of holistic healing.  In this episode, we'll begin to have some real dialogue about the issues that we're all facing in this divided nation, specifically looking at whether or not we have lost our humanity - and if so, how it can be recovered and repaired. On August 22 as we mark the second International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief Sabrina Dent, Richard T. Foltin, Kristen Lavery, and The Rev. William H. Lamar IV shared their insights on religious freedom. Freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) is the protection of the conscience and the free exercise of people’s understanding of the ultimate truth. It is not only a fundamental right but also an individual, institutional, private and public right as well. As enshrined in the First Amendment, the Articles 18,19, and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights also protect the rights to freedom of religion or belief, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to peaceful assembly and association. However, not every region is always a stronghold of allowing people to live by their core values and beliefs. The rate of ill-treatment against religious institutions, people, objects, or events is increasing significantly. On August 22, 2019, UN General Assembly recognized this by adopting a resolution declaring “International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief”. Upholding these rights and responding to the alarming increase in persecutions of religious people and communities around the world, we believe within the scope of open, constructive, and respectful exchanges at various platforms across local, national, and international levels will be invaluable assets in confronting these ongoing acts of intolerance. To that end, Rumi Forum has invited distinguished speakers to address various dimensions of the topic. On August 20th, our moderator Sabrina Dent and speakers Richard T. Foltin, Kirsten Lavery, and Rev. William H. Lamar IV, will share their insights on highlight mechanisms to prevent unfair treatments towards individuals, communities, and minorities. Moderator: Sabrina Dent, Senior Faith Adviser, Americans United for Separation of Church and State Sabrina is a life-long advocate for human rights and social justice. Throughout her career, she has worked with vulnerable populations including women and children impacted by domestic violence and abuse, youth with mental health and behavioral challenges, and racial and religious minorities. However, she developed a passion as a religious freedom advocate in 2015 when she became a Fellow with the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Freedom. Before joining the AU team, Sabrina worked as director of recruitment and admissions at the Religious Freedom Center of the Freedom Forum. Antoine "AJ" Jefferson was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where terms such as determination, perseverance, and faith became the foundation of his life. Growing up in Brownsville Brooklyn, AJ played basketball for Bishop Loughlin Memorial HS and briefly for Long Island University. Overcoming depression, low self-esteem, and gang affiliation AJ accepted the call to Christ and moved to Baltimore, MD. AJ's first ministry is his family. AJ is a proud AAU basketball coach and uses life lessons to promote self-discipline and respect on and off the basketball court.
