In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Sylvain Charlebois take on some of the hottest topics, shaking up the Canadian food industry. There's plenty to discuss, from McDonald's latest attempt to crack the plant-based market with a new veggie burger to the disruptive impact of China's tariffs on Canadian seafood and agricultural products.Kicking off the episode, Michael and Sylvain dissect McDonald's surprising re-entry into the plant-based space after previous failures. They debate whether the new veggie burger will finally resonate with consumers or if it's another attempt destined to fizzle out. As one of Canada's biggest beef buyers, McDonald's faces a delicate balance between satisfying traditional customers and appealing to the growing demand for plant-based alternatives.Next, they turn their attention to China's tariffs on Canadian seafood and other agricultural exports, which pressure producers and create economic uncertainty. The hosts discuss how Canada's food export strategy is being tested and why policymakers seem more focused on protecting the automotive sector than agriculture despite the latter's massive economic footprint.Amid these challenges, the episode spotlights new leadership in agriculture. Canada has a new federal Minister of Agriculture, Kody Blois from Nova Scotia, and Ontario has appointed Trevor Jones as its new Minister of Agriculture. Sylvain shares insights on how Blois's background as chair of the Agriculture Committee could bring a pragmatic approach to the role. At the same time, Jones's rural roots could positively shape Ontario's agricultural landscape. The hosts debate what priorities these ministers should address first, especially given the ongoing trade disputes and the economic pressure on Canadian farmers. In the second half of the episode, the hosts welcome Michel Gagné, CEO of WeCook, to the show. Michel shares his journey from managing primary Cargill and Maple Leaf food operations to leading one of Canada's top fresh meal delivery services. He discusses how WeCook differentiates itself by offering fully prepared, high-quality meals rather than meal kits, making busy weeknight dinners simple and convenient.WeCook's strategy includes local sourcing and a commitment to freshness, with meals made daily and delivered to customers within just a few days. Michel also discusses challenges like price volatility in ingredients—especially chicken—and how the company has become profitable while maintaining its quality standards. He highlights the importance of brand partnerships, like working with chef Gabrielle Drapeau and ambassador P.K. Subban, to build credibility and expand into new markets. The episode concludes with Michael and Sylvain reflecting on how the food industry can innovate in the face of global trade issues, shifting consumer preferences, and evolving political landscapes. Whether you're interested in food policy, fresh meal innovation, or how Canadian companies adapt to the times, this episode delivers fresh insights with every bite.https://www.spraguefoods.com/  The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. Here's how to read the nutrition labels to know if what you're buying is truly healthy. And for the items you'll buy anyway, how to build a meal around them so your health (and weight loss) doesn't suffer. When you go grocery shopping, do you actually read the nutrition labels, or do you just grab whatever looks “healthy” and call it a day? Today Jenn is taking us through Whole Foods together to review various products and evaluate which items are the best options. She provides in-depth information about breakfast foods, pasta, snacks, items in the frozen isles, and snacks. Many things in the store are packaged and marketed as healthy options, but upon looking more at the nutrition facts, it's clear that they are not quite what they market themselves to be. Jenn gives helpful information in this episode and great insight into how to read labels. Tune in today to learn if the items that frequent your shopping cart are really the best options. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE:●   [09:30] Jenn compares orange juice options. ●   [11:25] There are so many yogurt options, how can you tell the difference between all the different brands? ●   [19:31] Are there cereal options that are both healthy and tasty? ●   [24:32] Are kid snack bars actually a healthy option? ●   [27:07] What to look for and what to avoid when choosing between peanut butters. ●   [28:54] Comparing nutrition labels of different granola. ●   [32:04] Is there such a thing as healthy pasta? ●   [37:22] Comparing ingredients in frozen veggie burgers.●   [39:10] What are the best-frozen pizza options?●   [42:00] What snacks should you consider when grocery shopping?●   [50:02] Are alternative chips a healthy option?KEY TAKEAWAYS:●   7 oz of protein = 1 oz of animal meat. ●   Everybody has to weigh the balance between the nutrition facts and label, as well as the ingredients. Nothing is a NO; it's all about how. How can you have it and create a better, balanced plate? ●   Balance your priorities between understanding the ingredients and then where that brings you when you eat a serving or part of a serving.QUOTES: “Stop drinking juice and eat your fruit. We want to chew and swallow our food; it is better for our body.” - Jenn Trepeck “The things that we think are going to be the meal turn out to not be the meal. We have to combine some things here to get these choices to where we want to be.” - Jenn Trepeck “So an interesting thing I learned: people with diabetes, oftentimes what happens is that saturated fat is sitting in the insulin receptor sites on the cells, and therefore, even if you have the insulin, it has nowhere to go. So saturated fat for people with diabetes can be problematic, which means we wanna be very careful about saturated fat.” - Jenn Trepeck“Not a single food is off-limits unless you decide you want it to be.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy finally gets a break from the online world with an in-person visit to Plant Pub by the famous Fenway Park. Sitting down with Pat McAuley, one of the pub's co-founders and a plant-based athlete, they will attempt to show you a new future for pub and pub food that's growing in Boston. The episode kicks off with Pat's introduction to the beer world at Russ Heissner's Barrel House Z and his journey from a meat-eating college football player (who happens to look like Julian Edelman) to a plant-based activist. He'll then move on to talk about the 350-seat location that they are sitting in right now, waiting for Jimmy's classic burger and fries made entirely out of plants. Pat will also share more about Plant Pub's approach with plant-based food, which is focused on making these dishes more accessible through familiar language and menu items. He also shows appreciation for his head chef Mary Dumont and the team along with his partners Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni and Matthew Kenney. After our short break, the gang will talk about Pat's podcast, where he interviews nutritional experts and people who went through the same journey as he did (with the first episode featuring his own mom). They also discuss the health benefits of a plant-based diet, and just how well it goes with craft beers. Last but not least, Pat shares how he's supporting local farmers and brewers, as well as his worries for the first Red Sox game at the pub this Friday. Welcome to June 5th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate potent potables and primal plant protein.  If you've ever seen someone in a movie pick up a jug with three Xs on the label, you know that it's moonshine. Everyone assumes that the X is just a mark invented by Hollywood, but it's not. In fact, the marks are used as a way to track moonshine's production. An X is added to the jug after each round of distillation. The first round produces some strong but nasty-tasting alcohol known as singling. A couple more rounds gives distillers the nearly pure alcohol we know as moonshine and that's how it earns the three Xs. In some cases, the stuff can get to nearly 200 proof and is almost guaranteed to pack a punch. Proceed with caution as you raise a glass of legal moonshine to celebrate National Moonshine Day. It used to be that vegetarians were a bit on the outside of cookouts. Sure, there were veggie burgers, but they were made of beans or soy and most of the time they didn't hold up on the grill. So maybe you ended up eating some... potato salad…or maybe a roll with cheese on it. But now there are options for people who avoid animal protein: plant-based burgers that taste like…well, actual meat. Thanks to the Impossible Burger and similar brands, non-meat eaters can feel more included at backyard barbecues. On National Veggie Burger Day, celebrate the plant based stuff you can really sink your teeth into. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Here Martin takes through the moral maze that is our responsibility to be more sustainable and how that plays out in the world of brands. "We all have a duty of care" Martin describes it as an 'amble' but its a far reaching discussion, both technical (on inks) and thought provoking - is there a 'shopping list of righteousness'? Martin firmly believes in brands mission to be 'simple, honest and consistent' and uses this to portray how consumers expect brands to share the duty of care. We cover specific topics such as 'The Planet Moment Of Truth' in packaging and we also chat about Wicked Kitchen and the leadership shown by Derek and Chad Sarno within the world of vegan food. As Martin says: "Customers have changed a little bit and so has the marketplace. No-one expects to suffer through a veggie burger; you expect to love it, and it should be loved, it's a thing of beauty." Martin, like all our panellists, is passionate about how we tackle the big issues around brands' responsibilities to the planet and it's a fascinating picture he paints in his own inimitable style Here, in Planet Driven Brands Podcast Martin Simpson he shares his wisdom and experience with us.
