ANTI-ICE PROTESTS CONTINUE AS BEFORE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: Around the nation, anti-ICE protests and demonstrations continue as before. Civil disruption efforts of varying intensity were carried out over the past couple of days in the usual hotspots: Minneapolis, New York, Eugene (OR), etc. Smaller demonstrations of varying size were also noted overnight in Connecticut, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, California, and Tennessee.New York: Yesterday evening a vehicle ramming attack was conducted at the entrance to the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The assailant attempted to ram his vehicle into one of the subterranean entrances to the facility, ramming into the underground gate several times before being halted. The suspect was detained by police who were providing security for the venue, and later identified as Dan Sohail of New Jersey. Immediately after the incident, a federal civil rights investigation was opened regarding this case.California: Last night a state of unrest was reported at a Korean BBQ in Lynwood, after ICEWatch intelligence networks falsely identified off-duty TSA agents as ICE agents. After a group of off-duty TSA agents were spotted at the restaurant having dinner, backup was called in to the activists dispatch cell, and Rapid Response teams were sent to demonstrate in the parking lot. After some time local law enforcement was also dispatched to the scene, to assist the off-duty TSA agents in departing from the establishment.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: While the individuals targeted in California were obviously not ICE agents, they were still federal agents wearing civilian clothes, so the intelligence networks which identified and targeted them were not that far off the mark. However, targeting random clean-cut guys with fade haircuts, polo shirts, and khakis...in southern California...is not going to work out so well when they inevitably target the wrong crowd by mistake. This has been a wider concern nationwide, following the spooling-up of targeting efforts in Minneapolis, which involve vigilante activists targeting anybody they suspect of being ICE, assumptions which most of the time are false. However, the scale of these efforts is still a major concern; operations which are laughable can become quite serious when these networks are functioning in every major city in the country, with hundreds if not thousands of "whistles behind every blade of grass"...so to speak. Before her execution, Governor John Winthrop Jr. treated Mary Barnes as a patient. He recorded her symptoms, prescribed medicines, and tracked the costs in his medical notebook. Her case was published in the Connecticut Law Journal and is now being used as legal precedent...something that's incredibly rare for a self-represented litigant. Her live testimony also helped pass Jennifer's Law in Connecticut, making it the third state in the country to expand its legal definition of domestic violence to include coercive control: a form of abuse that so many people experience, but often struggle to name or be taken seriously around. Lisa and her partner, Chris, now coach people navigating high-conflict relationships, divorce, custody battles, and what many describe as co-parenting hell — helping them have the best possible outcome in family court and beyond. They also offer a weekly Legal Abuse Support Group for those dealing with narcissistic opponents in legal matters.  Lisa explains how coercive control can include manipulation, financial abuse, and legal abuse, often carried out in quiet, passive ways that are easily misunderstood or minimized. This Day in Legal History: Paris Peace AccordsOn January 27, 1973, the United States signed the Paris Peace Accords, effectively marking the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Though primarily a geopolitical and military agreement, the Paris Peace Accords had significant legal dimensions. Negotiated between the U.S., South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the Viet Cong (under the banner of the Provisional Revolutionary Government), the accords represented a complex international legal settlement aimed at restoring peace in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.The agreement included provisions for a cease-fire, the withdrawal of U.S. troops, the release of prisoners of war, and the recognition of South Vietnamese sovereignty. However, video evidence contradicts the official account of Pretti's death, showing he was unarmed and holding a phone when agents shot him, despite claims he posed a threat with a firearm. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a preliminary injunction, preventing the Department of Homeland Security from terminating the programs, which benefited migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.These programs, created or expanded under President Biden, allowed U.S. citizens and green card holders to sponsor relatives while they awaited visa approval. The Trump administration moved to end the programs, claiming they were inconsistent with current enforcement priorities and enabled people to bypass traditional immigration processes.Talwani found that the administration failed to justify its decision, noting the government neither provided evidence of fraud nor assessed the real-life consequences for affected migrants. New York Governor Kathy Hochul's proposed no-tax-hike budget may appear fiscally cautious, but critics (includin me) argue it lacks the stable, long-term revenue needed to support key social programs like universal childcare. While the state currently enjoys relative revenue stability, the budget relies on temporary fixes, such as decoupling from parts of the federal tax code to generate $1.6 billion, instead of pursuing more durable sources of funding.My critique centers on Hochul's refusal to raise the top marginal corporate tax rate—currently 7.25% for large companies—which is lower than neighboring states like New Jersey (11.5%) and Connecticut (8.25%). I suggest raising the rate to at least 8.5% and making the existing corporate tax surcharge permanent. I argue that companies benefiting from New York's infrastructure and market can afford modest increases, and are unlikely to relocate given regional and national tax landscapes.Without securing permanent funding, the state risks repeating a familiar pattern: expanding programs in good times and cutting them during downturns. I warn that relying on temporary revenue maneuvers delays tough decisions and increases the likelihood of painful tax hikes or service cuts when the economy falters.
