#801: Should Honey, I Shrunk the Kids get a legacy sequel? by C.W.A
Coming out more than sixteen years after its beloved predecessor (2001: A Space Odyssey), this might have been the very first "Legacy Sequel." Also whereas the first film was directed by the late great cinema legend Stanley Kubrick, this one was helmed by journeyman director Peter Hyams (Running Scared, Capricorn One, Timecop) who in tandem with the author (Arthur C. Clarke) of the original source material was determined to craft a more conventional story as opposed to the ground-breaking 1968 classic which was much more abstract in it structure and tone. Picking up nine years after the events of that first film, we follow Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) who planned that previous mission of the USS Discovery to Jupiter where those onboard discovered the mysterious "Monolith." Dr. Floyd is determined to find out what exactly transpired so he hitches a ride with a Soviet mission there commanded by Captain Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren). And what they eventually encounter and discover is...."something wonderful?" Also along for the ride are John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, and Elya Baskin in an epic sci-fi adventure which might not approach the majesty of its predecessor but actually holds up better as pure entertainment, now forty years after it was first released in theaters. Greetings Programs! 2024's final episode of Disney Discussions is Mike's choice; TRON (1982) & TRON: Legacy (2010)! In more detail, Mike first talks about why he chose this classic movie and it's legacy sequel, then each person talks about their first memories of TRON. After going through the numerous characters, plot points and special effects of the original, the gang talk about the same things in Legacy while comparing them to TRON. Special effects and visuals are a huge part of TRON's appeal, but is it enough to make a satisfying sequel? Spider-Dan has also read some TRON comics and has watched the animated series TRON: Uprising, which he talks about too. SPOILER WARNING: aside from the two TRON movies that are discussed in-depth, the movie Ex-Machina is spoiled around the 40 minute mark, so be aware! SPOILER ALERT! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS, WE HOLD NOTHING BACK AND DISCUSS MAJOR SPOILERS!There is so much to unpack when it comes to The Exorcist: Believer. How the rights almost cost half a billion dollars. The fact there is literally not one exorcist in the movie. Trying to connect it to the original. But we mainly talk about how disappointed we were. Do we have ourselves to blame? It is hard not to go into some movies with high expectations - especially ones that have trailers as awesome as The Exorcist: Believer. As much as we anticipated it, we knew it would have to be something special to be one of our picks for best of the year. So, we went in with clear heads and just wanted to like it.That being said, the trailers did an excellent job of pumping us up and the name The Exorcist carries gravity. We talk about how both may have ended up doing more harm than good. Should this have been its own IP? We also discuss its place in the franchise and what it means going forward. It has been half a century since the original was released and proceeded to frighten audiences for decades. Few expected for the new release to have the same impact, but will it have any appeal to new audiences? Will horror fans be willing to accept it? The power of Christ compels us to talk about everything - and little of it is good.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network.
Closing out Movie March this year we got the 2022 hit that captivated audiences and critics alike Top Gun: Maverick. Coming out a mere 36 years after the first film Top Gun: Maverick was a pleasant surprise to anyone who saw it. The film was a box office juggernaut, becoming the highest grossing film of Cruise's career, a critical darling, being one of the best reviewed films of the year, and even got a Best Picture Nomination. This is considered to be one of the best examples of a Legacy Sequel so what is it about this film that won over so many? That's what we're here to discuss.
“So be addicted. Be addicted to something else.”Checking in 20 Years Later with Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, and BegbyThat's right, it's time to talk about Danny Boyle's legacy sequel T2 Trainspotting. It was a long time coming, and that's even after author Irvine Welsh wrote a 10-years-later sequel called “Porno” to his original novel “Trainspotting.” Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our conversations about the Trainspotting series with a look at Boyle's 2017 film T2 Trainspotting. Here's a hint at what we talk about.First off, what's up with that dumb title? We chat about it a bit and the reasons they named it that, but it doesn't change our opinions that it doesn't work that well. We were a little concerned about a return to this world, but in the end, we felt it worked. That's largely because the people behind it were passionate about it and kept it honest and in line with where the first film ended. That doesn't mean we don't have issues with some of the character arcs. Could Begbie perhaps have learned something in prison and not come out 20 years later feeling like the same character? Could we have spent a bit more time dealing with Renton's health issues? Why did Kelly Macdonald have to be included in what feels just like a cameo? Still, the story largely works. We like the journeys the characters go on even with some of the issues. We're glad that Boyle and Ewan McGregor were able to work past their problems to find a way into this one. And it's great to see Boyle still finding ways to play with his production style, even if sometimes it doesn't quite feel as fresh as it did the first time around. All in all, it's a surprisingly good return to this world. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. *SPOILER ALERT!!! WE WILL BE DISUCSSING TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE IN DEPTH, INCLUDING WHO DIES AND WHO SURVIVES*Sequels are an important part of horror. While that do not always work out (and eventually end up diluting the source material), they are one of the determining factors of success in the genre. In recent years, legacy sequels have become increasingly popular. One of the big marketing themes around Texas Chainsaw Massacre was how it was a direct sequel to the 1974 original. We discuss reboot versus sequel and try to figure out what the latest installment in the franchise was going for.We also talk about popular ideas in horror. Reality versus the supernatural and white science versus Black magic are often seen, but the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies have always been about the city versus the country. This was a big part of the latest installment, but did it amount to anything more than jabs at Austin and modern society? Was the movie genuinely trying to make a statement or was it all a joke?Unlike the original, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a gory movie. We talk about the kills in the movie and whether it was too much. We also talk about what the film means for Fede Alavarez and how the film is indebted to horror movies of the past. Plus, talks about homages, sequels, and final girls.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs.
