This week has two legendary guests - Steve DeAngelo and Firstman. This episode  explores cannabis, not just as a plant, but as a pivotal element in the tapestry of wellness, sustainability, and conscious living. We're peeling back layers of systemic racism tied to cannabis prohibition, and with the help of the Last Prisoner Project, we're illuminating the dark corners of cannabis-related incarceration injustices.Have you ever considered the spiritual kinship between humans and plants? Join us as we link arms with esteemed guests to navigate the spiritual significance of cannabis within Rastafari and indigenous Shipibo traditions. We're scrutinizing the cultural symbols of cannabis and psychedelics, questioning the corporatization of an industry that could take a leaf out of the book of communal healing and empowerment offered at retreats like the Rastafari Indigenous Village. The episode wraps up with a thoughtful critique of the cannabis industry's trajectory while highlighting the potential of psychedelic retreats to foster social justice and enable empowering change. Tune in for an episode that's more than just a conversation—it's a rallying cry for unity, understanding, and a reconnection to the wisdom of plant teachers.Guest bios: Firstman: Firstman is a longtime advocate for the sustainable development of the cultural industry through the preservation, protection and promotion of cultural events; community development projects; traditional knowledge, and indigenous expression. He is one of the original founders of Rastafari Indigenous Village (RIV); a father, drummer, chanter, singer, songwriter, and orator. Firstman is a founding member of Life Is A Ceremony retreat. https://rastavillage.comSteve DeAngelo:  Steve is a globally recognized cannabis leader who was dubbed “the father of the legal industry” by former Speaker of the California Assembly Willie Brown. A lifelong cannabis activist, author, educator, and entrepreneur, Steve has spent almost a half-century on the front lines of the cannabis liberation movement. Steve believes that cannabis and the other visionary plants offer humanity a wisdom that is necessary to preserve the planet and all her creatures. He will continue his work until these medicines and the people who revere them have a safe and honored place in all human societies.Support the showThanks for listening to another episode. “In some ways, we judge the story by the storyteller.” Colonialism corrupted the beautiful message of the Gospel when it forced Christianity on Indigenous people. The First Nations Version of the New Testament (FNV) seeks to remove those colonial barriers and present the beauty of Jesus' story. In some sense, we didn't make our own decision from reading the Bible or from hearing the gospel. We didn't make our own decision. We were told this is what we have to do. And so to me faith comes out of a willing heart that hears...the story of the gospel.”“Even the word ‘church' can bring up barriers because of those [colonial] experiences. So we intentionally used other words so that those barriers don't immediately go up. We're not trying to deceive anyone or any of our Native people. We're just trying to present the Scriptures in a way so that the barriers that the colonial experiment on our people produced aren't in the way."“This [translation] is not only a gift from Native people to other Native people, but it's also a gift from a group of Native people to the dominant culture…it opens up new ways of seeing God.”“When you take something as beautiful as the gospel—and I believe the gospel is a wonderful, beautiful story when it's understood—and when you force that on somebody, in oppressive ways, you destroy the message of it because Native people, traditionally, we don't just listen to the story. We evaluate the storyteller. America's longest war is over. But the chaotic end to the war in Afghanistan has many Americans questioning the leadership of the Biden administration. It's estimated that there are still between 100 and 200 Americans and thousands of our Afghan partners trapped in the Taliban-controlled south-central Asian nation. While the Taliban claim they will respect the rights of women and girls, experts say the terrorist group hasn't given Afghans any reason to believe them. “It seems that the women will be those who will be losing the most, whether it is because of conflict or the authoritarian regime that is oppressive toward women,” says Roya Rahmani, the female former Afghan ambassador to the United States. On Tuesday, Rahmani and Heela Najibullah, author of “Reconciliation and Social Healing in Afghanistan,” joined The Heritage Foundation for an event, “Grim Prospects for Women and Girls in Afghanistan.” We share their remarks on the podcast today. Centuries of contemplatives and community leaders, alike, have drawn bridges between inner and outer work. Meister Eckhart, the great thirteenth century philosopher and mystic, writes, “What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall reap in the harvest of action.” In other words, the virtues we cultivate within ourselves spill over and course throughout the work we do in the world. For our second issue, Clerestory writers and contributors have responded to the theme community. For the last four months, we've processed belonging, loneliness, and grief… love, friendship, and loss… locality and neighborliness… storytelling and peacebuilding… racial justice… liberation and the lack of it… human interconnectedness… and life together. Today on the podcast, we're sharing three stories from Clerestory's second issue. First, Kimi Bryson shares a creative nonfiction piece, “Pittsburgh” a reflection on moving and love in the time of the pandemic. Emma McDonald shares an essay on epistemic trust, community, and the QAnon conspiracy. And Anushree Singh shares “Coconut,” a moving personal essay on self-belonging and her identity as an Indian American woman. Read the Magazine: clerestorymag.comFollow us: Instagram: @clerestorymagTwitter: @clerestorymagFacebook: facebook.com/clerestorymagSupport our work:Ko-FiBookshopBonfire

And we need to. I think that that’s healthy. But we can’t stay there. We have to move through it.”“Dr. King said, ‘Love is the most durable power in the world.’ And when I heard that quote, what I literally saw was like an actual structure to hold the weight of disagreement. For me, contemplative prayer serves as the foundation to be present with those who are difficult to love, to be present with those I disagree with.”“The agony of prayer is that I don’t see fruit in the moment. And I need to be okay with that.”“Who are you allowing to speak into your life? What are the stories you’re opening yourself to? Sometimes it’s an emotional proximity. Sometimes it’s narrative proximity—trying to understand someone’s story.”“How Christians can participate in the renewal of the world—we can see people as enemies to be conquered or see wounds that need to be healed. Kirk Schneider is currently running for President of the American Psychological Association (APA). He is a licensed psychologist and adjunct faculty at Saybrook University and Teachers College, Columbia University. He is well-known as the leading spokesperson for integrative, existential, and humanistic approaches to psychology, which emphasize the therapeutic relationship and the importance of confronting the deep paradoxes of being human, and the conflicts that arise from them, in psychotherapy. He has authored or co-authored thirteen books, including the Wiley World Handbook of Existential Therapy, The Spirituality of Awe: Challenges to the Robotic Revolution, The Polarized Mind: Why It's Killing Us and What We Can Do About It, and, most recently, The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing. Many trainees in counseling and clinical psychology will recognize Schneider from the APA Psychotherapy Training video series featuring his therapy work. Schneider is campaigning to serve as President of APA to "to address the existential crises that are now flaring all about us." As he puts it: "We are in crisis racially, politically, and environmentally. We are in crisis with gender and sexual injustices, and we are in crisis with mental and physical health. In short, America is poised on the precipice, and if our profession fails to grasp this problem, we are in danger of inflaming it. In this interview, Schneider discusses his path into psychology, including his own struggles and growth, his approach to psychotherapy, and his scholarship on the psychology of awe and the polarized mind. Then we turn to his vision for psychology; a "whole-person" approach to healthcare, a "Psychologist General" of the United States, and the development of dialogue groups that address polarization and division.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is one of our wisest models on the territory of reckoning with past wrongs that infuse and haunt the present. In the 1990s, he helped galvanize South Africa’s peaceful transition to democracy after decades of white supremacy as the law of the land. He tells a story from his time chairing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which granted amnesty to those who would fully confess their crimes — of how healing and human redemption unfold. “Human beings can leave you speechless, really. They can leave you speechless by the horrible things they do, but they also leave you speechless with the incredible things,” he says. Desmond Tutu is an Anglican archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He has written numerous books for adults and children — including “The Rainbow People of God” and, together with his good friend the Dalai Lama, “The Book of Joy.” Find the transcript at onbeing.org.

In this episode, Dr. Judith Thompson shares some insights on the lens of social healing and its relation to peace building.  She comments that “The social healing lens is really a paradigm; it’s a vision that arises basically from the inherent truth of interconnectivity, which is to say it’s a lens of compassion. And I see it as an evolutionary step for us. The older paradigm, the paradigm of separation, which has brought with it a retributive lens, let us say, within the field that I work in, sees and depends upon on some level people being able to separate themselves from the other and not have a sense of relatedness to the experience of the other."   She continues: "Compassion arises in the process of social healing because we are able to let go of a sense of rigid self, and often that’s a righteous self that sits in judgment of the other. But when at the point that we are able to say ah I recognize that I too have been a victim, or I too have been a perpetrator, or I too have stood by while others have been harmed. That allows us to recognize that we’re all in this together, and that there’s a communal enterprise. And that’s really what social healing is about." Dr. Thompson has been engaged in projects promoting social healing for over twenty years, working primarily with survivors of war and political violence. As part of her doctoral research for the Union Institute, she convened a three-day dialogue hosted by the Ikeda Center that brought together 25 people from all over the world to explore the question, "How does compassion arise in the process of social healing?" In 1984, Thompson co-founded Children of War, Inc., an award-winning international youth leadership organization that supported the vision and leadership of young activists from 22 war-torn countries.  Dr. Thompson has also helped to develop social healing programs in Israel/Palestine and Cambodia and has worked closely with indigenous elders from North, Central, and South America who are seeking to support worldwide social and ecological healing through their traditional ceremonies.   Dr. Thompson was recipient of the Bunting Peace Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies and the International Peace Prize of the Dolores Kohl Education Foundation.  The audio from this interview is from a series of video reflections that were posted on the Ikeda Center YouTube page in August of 2011.
