The vessel sank quickly without sending a distress signal and, as we all know, the tragedy inspired Gordon Lightfoot to write his famous song. Today I talked to Michelle Brafman about her novel Swimming with Ghosts (Keylight Books, 2023). Until her unemployed husband Charlie volunteers to step in as team coach, professional organizer Gillian Cloud has also controlled the neighborhood swim club and its team. She's a beautiful, much-admired part of the community, but Gillian is living behind a façade, refusing to accept the truth about her father's alcoholism and philandering, suppressing any unpleasantness in order to present her well-known positivity. Her best friend Kristy learns the truth about her own hidden addictions, which surface in a dangerous way and require the support of a former mentor. It's the summer of 2012, and after the ghosts of family addictions appear, and a real derecho destroys the clubhouse and destroys the power grid for several days, both Gillian and Kristy need to come to terms with their past trauma. Michelle Brafman is the author of Bertrand Court: Stories and the novel Washing the Dead. Her essays and short fiction have appeared in Oprah Daily, Slate, LitHub, The Forward, Tablet, and elsewhere. She teaches fiction writing in the Johns Hopkins University MA in Writing Program. She's worked as a coffee barista, radio advertising salesperson, and television producer, among other jobs. She got hooked on writing fiction while she was producing television because she craved another outlet to tell the stories she was gathering. Brafman grew up in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, earned an MA in Fiction Writing from Johns Hopkins University, and in addition to writing, her grand passion is helping others find and tune their narrative voices. A former swim mom and NCAA All-American freestyler, Michelle has never lived more than a mile away from a lake, ocean, or river. Learn more about your ad choices. Ameryka Północna. Na granicy Stanów Zjednoczonych i Kanady leży system Wielkich Jezior, drugi po Bajkale zbiornik słodkiej wody na planecie Ziemia. Wielkie Jeziora stanowią dziś, w połączeniu z rzeką Świętego Wawrzyńca i systemem kanałów, jeden z najdłuższych śródlądowych szlaków wodnych. To Droga Świętego Wawrzyńca - pozwala z Atlantyku dotrzeć do każdego z wielkich jezior, a jej długość pomiędzy wyspą Anticosti a zachodnim brzegiem Jeziora Górnego wynosi ponad 3700 km. Najsłynniejszym statkiem pływającym tą drogą był frachtowiec SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Statek, ze wszech miar nietuzinkowy. Został zbudowany na zamówienie Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee i był pierwszym frachtowcem którego armatorem była firma ubezpieczeniowa. Warty 7 mln dolarów, zawrotną na tamte czasy sumę – ustanowił 6 rekordów ciężaru przewożonych ładunków. Nic dziwnego - miał 39 stóp zanurzenia, 75 szerokości i aż 729 długości – to zaledwie o 1 stopę mniej niż dopuszczalna długość na Drodze świętego Wawrzyńca. Bez ładunku ważył 13632 tony. Był w swoich czasach największym frachtowcem śródlądowym na świecie. Powszechnie zaś był nazywany Fitz, Mighty Fitz, Big Fitz, Pride of the American Side, Toledo Express oraz Titanic of the Great Lakes. Artykuł przeczytał Gordon Lightfoot, kompozytor i piosenkarz, wielka legenda kanadyjskiego folku. Gordona poruszyła historia. Drażniła go błędnie napisana w artykule nazwa frachtowca. Rev. Dr. John Wohlrabe Jr., pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Whitefish Bay, WI, and 2nd Vice President of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study Matthew 22:1-14. Our King, God the Father, invites people to His Feast of salvation. The rich feast was promised in Isaiah 25 and a promise for the world. The reactions of this invitation are quite varied, but the king continues to freely invite by His grace. When the guests come into the wedding hall, there are some who dishonor the king by not wearing the wedding garment. Even with this dishonoring, the King patiently calls the guests Friend, yet without repentance there are dire consequences. “O Jesus Christ, invite us again to Your feast of salvation. Use us as Your servants to invite others to Your feast. Lord have mercy. Amen”
Make Life More Joyful Episode 17 "You should have a life you love. Let's uplift women and do great things. Make life more joyful." – Sheila Long In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Sheila Long about: Her decision to start her own business after she decided to leave the world of big corporate America to focus on family. How Sheila began to get acclimated to a new city and make friends and contacts that would later be so important to her beginning her business. The power of women helping women to succeed. Key Takeaways There are so many issues in society, and women play a crucial role in moving forward on these issues, especially when they unite. As a society, we do not celebrate women taking risks like we do men. Women working with other women helps make that easier for would-be women entrepreneurs. Find your tribe of women or a personal board of directors when launching a business or re-inventing yourself. Your loved ones don't want to see you fail and may hold you back in the interest of trying to protect you from all the unknowns and possible failure. People outside your immediate circle can give you the feedback you need most. Be open to admitting you can't do everything and reach out for help. Hire an accountant or virtual assistant to allow you to focus on the work you do best. Sometimes it's hard to trust that someone else will do it as well as you. SS Edmund Fitzgerald (nicknamed "Mighty Fitz," "The Fitz," or "The Big Fitz") was an American Great Lakes freighter launched on June 8, 1958. At the time of its launching, it was one of the first boats to be at or near maximum "St Lawrence Seaway Size" which was 730 feet (220 m) long and 75 feet (23 m) wide. From its launching in 1958 until 1971 the Fitzgerald continued to be one of the largest boats on the Great Lakes. On November 10, 1975, while traveling on Lake Superior during a gale, the Fitzgerald sank suddenly in Canadian waters approximately 17 miles (15 nmi; 27 km) from the entrance of Whitefish Bay at a depth of 530 feet (160 m). Although it had reported having some difficulties before the accident, the Fitzgerald sank without sending any distress signals. Its crew of 29 perished in the sinking with no bodies being recovered. When the wreck was found, it was discovered that the Fitzgerald had broken in two.The sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald is the most famous disaster in the history of Great Lakes shipping. The disaster was the subject of Gordon Lightfoot's 1976 hit song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Mark Gumbinger has been researching shipwrecks and lighthouses for more than 20 years. A rainbow of humanity gathered throughout southeastern Wisconsin Saturday — from Greendale to Grafton — as marches continue in reaction to the tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police almost two weeks ago. Hundreds of people converged at the North Point Water Tower in Milwaukee Saturday before making their way north to Whitefish Bay and back again. Energy was building in this patch of brilliant green at the easternmost point of North Ave. People scooped up signs that volunteers created on the spot. Latest WUWM & NPR Protest Coverage Jake, who didn’t want to share his last name, helped organize the march’s medic crew. A doctor and other health care workers have volunteered to triage, just in case. Jake hopes Milwaukee can transition to more peaceful change. One step forward, he believes, would be demilitarizing the police. "Just seeing an antagonistic force in your community with military grade weapons — like the stuff I used in Afghanistan — is kind of

Mike and Brian Mountan are a father and son duo who together host the Bri The Sports Guy podcast. They both love watching, playing, and talking about sports. Brian has an unusual gift for being able to remember and recall stats and history about sports that most of us often forget. They also have a very close father and son relationship and planned starting their podcast together to coincide with Brian graduating from high school and Mike retiring from his finance career. Mike is a native of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. He received his BA and an MBA from Northwest University in Evanston, Illinois. He spent 13 years with Procter & Gamble and 18 years with Johnson & Johnson in a variety of finance roles including VP of Finance for Johnson & Johnson's Consumer Division Asia Pacific based in Singapore and Global CFO of Johnson & Johnson's diabetes care business. Mike also serves on the board for the Jacksonville School for Autism and is chairman of the finance committee of St Joseph Academy. Brian is a 20 year old who was diagnosed at age 3 with autism. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and has lived in Jacksonville, Florida twice. He’s also lived in Singapore and San Ramon, California. Brian graduated from high school in May of 2019 and has been working on the podcast ever since. In addition to sports broadcasting and blogging, Brian also works at the Brooks YMCA. You are going to love this conversation as we dive into their sports podcast and the wonderful father and son dynamic that flows throughout the show. Show Notes: [04:04] Growing up, Mike watched a lot of sports and played a lot of sports. [04:16] When Brian and his brother were born, his family tried to get them involved in as many sports as possible. [04:41] Brian is six feet and six inches tall. He's a great basketball player and a great golfer. [05:03] Mike grew up watching sports on TV. He was fortunate to grow up in Wisconsin, a state that had all of the pro teams. [06:02] Brian's mom thought the podcast would be a good idea after Brian graduated from high school. They've done over a hundred and thirty two episodes now. [07:21] Mike and his family knew that Brian had a gift. Mike shares a story about Brian talking about a game, and a nearby restaurant patron being amazed at everything he could remember. [09:50] Students are really being impacted by the shutdown. [10:23] The baseball and basketball seasons have been put on hold, so the NFL is one of the main things they have to talk about right now. [11:50] They are doing a free agency review by division. Then they'll do an NFC and AFC draft preview. Then they'll talk about what they think about the upcoming teams. They're hopeful that by late May, they will see some broadcasts. [15:22] They subscribe to many sports resources in order to go deep in their podcast. [16:22] They would rather have too much content as opposed to too little content. They plan out in advance which sports they will talk about during the week. [18:07] They do three podcasts a week, and they have a sponsor. [19:22] Brian talks about some of the awesome guests that they have had on the show. [20:19] They would love to get the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers on the show. His name is Craig Counsell. They are also trying to make some connections with local golfers and the Jaguars. [23:03] Mike timed his retirement to Brian's graduation, so they could both start the podcast together. [24:53] Mike has always been a workaholic, so the podcast gives him a lot to work on with so many different sports to cover. [25:32] They came up with the idea around Christmas of 2018. [26:40] Sports podcasting is a very crowded space. They did the show for their friends and to show the autism community that there's a lot of practical things they can do. [27:44] They define success by having a lot of great content and having fun. [30:29] People in Florida are really interested in hearing them talk about football. [31:33] They use a lot of different magazines to help keep things straight when covering college football. [32:41] The NBA is the easiest to cover because of the stability. [33:06] They take notes and get their research the old-fashioned way. [34:39] Brian has learned planning and not procrastinating from his parents. [36:12] Mike learned social skills from his dad and work ethic from his grandparents. [37:06] Mike would like to expand their audience. [39:26] They would also like to cover the Milwaukee Bucks NBA game live. [42:48] Darrell's takeaways: The way Mike and Brian interact shows how special their relationship is. The subject of their content has been significantly reduced because they are covering sports. They've adapted, and they're focusing deeper on the draft. They're making the most of the situation they have. They have reduced their schedule to two episodes per week instead of three. Think about your contingency plan in case of a dry spell. Look for inspiration for content. Cover what's most important and build your schedule around that. The beer checks in at 4.5% alcohol by volume and has 45 IBUs. Pabst beached The Seabird on the shore of Lake Michigan’s Whitefish Bay in an 1863 storm, and then abandoned his nautical career for his father-in-law’s brewery. Pabst died in 1904.Boulder Beer Company to Sell Brewpub Building, Transition to Contract Brewed BrandThree months after announcing plans to pivot to a brewpub business model, Boulder Beer Company today announced plans to sell its brewpub building and pivot once more to a contract brewing model. In an email Monday to Boulder Beer consumers, owner Gina Day announced that the brewpub will close on January 18.She wrote “Some outside influences have recently transpired that have led us to make business decisions we feel are best for the company, “An opportunity to sell the building at 2880 Wilderness Place recently presented itself to us, which has led us to the decision to close The Pub at Boulder Beer.”In recent months, Boulder has announced several changes to its business model, citing increased competition within the craft brewing industry. In October, the company announced it would cease distribution to its 27-state footprint and retrench to a brewpub-only model. However, by December, Boulder Beer’s model changed once more, as the company announced a partnership with Denver-based contract brewery Sleeping Giant to brew, sell and distribute six Boulder offerings.Hard Seltzer Volume Projected to Triple By 2023Hard seltzer is not a fad; it’s a category, Brandy Rand, the COO of market research firm IWSR, declared today during Beer Business Daily’s Beer Industry Summit in Palm Beach, Florida.Rand argued that hard seltzers are meeting consumers’ desire for refreshing, flavorful beverages that are low in calories with little to no sugar. And seltzers are cutting across all demographics and age groups, she said.According to IWSR, hard seltzer volume in the U.S. hit around 82.5 million cases in 2019, and volumes are expected to more than triple, to 281 million cases, by 2023. Rand shared that more than half of U.S. alcohol consumers drink hard seltzer at least once a week, with an average of 2.83 cans per occasion.Rand sees plenty of growth prospects for hard seltzer due to 90% of hard seltzer sales occurring at off-premise retailers, and less than 1% of those transactions are being made through ecommerce.Donn Bichsel Jr. Starts 3 Tier Beverages Consulting FirmFormer Revolution Brewing chief commercial officer Donn Bichsel Jr. has launched 3 Tier Beverages, a Chicago-based sales and marketing consulting firm.According to Bichsel, the need he’s found in the market among craft breweries is for someone with fresh eyes to examine the business and slow everything down. Many companies are growing at such a fast rate that they may have “forgotten why they’re in the industry in the first place, and what their brand means to them and what message they’re trying to put out to the world about their company,” he added.Bichsel’s services are tailored to his individual clients’ specific needs, including developing sales and marketing personnel, building wholesaler relationships, devising marketing and go-to-market strategies, examining pricing, evaluating brand portfolios, creating seasonal programs, and identifying mission statements and a company’s overall ethos.Bichsel joined Revolution in 2012 as its sales and marketing director and helped to shepherd the then-brewpub to an 85,000-barrel regional craft brewery with distribution in seven states. His resume includes sales leadership stints at MillerCoors, Goose Island, Heineken USA and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery.Since departing Revolution, Bichsel said he’s learned more about the craft beer industry over two months than he did over the last couple of years due to being so dialed into the Chicago craft brewery’s rapid growth.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Summary Mark Concannon is a figure and local legend in Milwaukee, and I am excited to share our conversation with you in this episode. Mark has worked in the Milwaukee market for a long time, first starting as a weekend sportscaster on Channel 6, before transitioning to the Wake Up News morning show, which he did for 20 years. After his time at Channel 6, he worked for Fox Sports Wisconsin. Nine years ago, he transitioned from broadcasting to starting his own company, Concannon Communications, a video company that helps businesses of any size tell their stories. Mark describes experiences of his early days in broadcasting, mentors he’s been able to work with along the way, and the shift he went through in owning his own business. He also shares details about his book, (https://mettleandhonor.com/) . Hot topics in this episode: The personal changes he experienced, transitioning from broadcasting into owning his own company The types of videos made by Concannon Communications Video as a marketing platform Advice Mark would give his younger self Book that has guided him: , by Jim Bouton (https://www.amazon.com/Ball-Four-Anniversary-Jim-Bouton/dp/0020306652) What he’s excited about for the future [23:15] Mark asks me: What has been the biggest challenge for you doing this podcast? Contact Info: Visit: Concannon Communications 4704 N. They’re a great business. This is something that you should look into, and why you should do business with them.” The bigger challenges for me were just running a business. I mean, how does that happen? I mean, I knew about video, I knew about storytelling, I’ve been doing it all my life, but running a business, I was starting in kindergarten. Nine years later I like to tell folks I’m at about eighth grade now. I’ve learned some, I’ve still got so much to learn. Sponsors Love the podcast? :17 - It’s been almost thirty years since Amy Mihaljevic went missing and was later found dead in Ashland County, and the murderer has yet to be found. However, due to some breakthroughs in DNA testing, the killer could be traded, and according to James Renner, we may have an answer within the next year. He joined fill-in host Tony Mazur to discuss it. 16:00 - On November 10th, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was traveling on Lake Superior “fully loaded for Cleveland.” However, gale force winds in the blustery November night caused the ship to lose radio contact, and “The Fitz” sunk before Whitefish Bay, losing all 29 crew members. We’ve all heard the Gordon Lightfoot song, so Tony shared some facts on the most infamous shipwreck in the history of the Great Lakes. 27:40 - November is the month where we become more aware of all types of diabetes. Dr. Desmond Bell, president of the Save a Leg, Save a Life foundation, joined the show to talk about prevention and treatment with diabetes. 36:29 - The climate may be weeks behind, but it’s time for the ol’ fall cleanup. Our master gardener Jeanne Poremski took questions on proper grass maintenance, cutting peonies, and how to treat blooming hibiscus plants. 51:06 - And finally, we wrap up the week with our movie guy and WQMX morning man Scott Wynn. Opening this weekend is yet another Grinch movie, and he urges Tony to go see Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born.

Have you ever thought that you’re at a place in your life where it’s too late to start over? Sometimes I feel like we get to a certain age (an age that doesn’t actually really exist) and we think that we are stuck doing what we are doing forever. We think that if we aren’t successful doing something by age…. let’s day 28! Then we are STUCK. It’s never too late. I mean, Morgan Freeman was 52 when he got his first leading role in a movie… and now we see Morgan Freeman do everything! Vera Wang decided she wanted to be a designer… at age 40! Ray Kroc didn’t open his first McDonald’s until after he turned 50. This just goes to show it is NEVER too late to pursue something you believe in… My guest this week is Steven Wallace, author of OBRONI AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and founder of Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company, the first beyond fair trade, “single-origin” chocolate in Ghana. I LOVED chatting with Steven because, let’s be honest, I love chocolate, and also because this is an area that I honestly do not know a lot about and I was so eager and ready to learn from Steven’s experiences… You’re going to LOVE this one… About Steven: Steven Wallace, Founder/President of The Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company. Omanhene is the first company to sustain exports of premium chocolate manufactured entirely in Africa. Omanhene is credited with producing the world’s first single-origin chocolate bar in 1994 and with creating an entirely new chocolate category (dark milk chocolate). Omanhene’s entrepreneurial accomplishments and path-breaking business model have been recognized by President Jimmy Carter, former ambassador Shirley Temple Black and the United Nations Global Compact. He was selected as one of the inaugural TED Fellows in 2007. He is a featured subject in the book, “Food Heroes” by Georgia Pellegrini and features prominently in the book “Chocolate Nations” by Orla Ryan. He is the author of “Obroni and the Chocolate Factory: An Unlikely Story of Globalization and Ghana’s First Gourmet Chocolate Bar” (2017, Skyhorse Publishing). Wallace first came to the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana as a high school foreign exchange student during the summer of 1978. (He lived with a traditional Ghanaian family, which consisted of a host father and his three wives and 21 children.) He founded Omanhene at the age of 29. Wallace often speaks on economic development, cross-cultural issues and the challenges of starting a gourmet food business in Africa. He delivered a TEDx talk in Accra and has served as a guest panelist at the US State Department sponsored African Growth and Opportunity Act Forum in Accra, Ghana. Wallace frequently speaks at public events and universities including Brown, Princeton, The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, The University of Michigan Graduate School of Business and Northwestern University. Wallace is a founding partner in NuMedika, a patient-centric telemedicine platform specifically designed for the African continent. Previously, Wallace worked in broadcasting in the newsroom of WMAL-AM 63, a networkowned radio station in Washington, DC and then as an attorney with the boutique tax law firm of Silverstein & Mullens in Washington, DC. He later served as the vice-president of Midstates Sportswear. He served as vice-chair of the board of directors of AFS-USA, Inc. and on the board of trustees of AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. the largest volunteer student exchange organization in the world. AFS has been instrumental in the US State Department’s YES program bringing young people from countries with Muslim populations to the US to spend a year with a US family and attend a US high school. Wallace holds a bachelor’s degree in History magna cum laude (Phi Beta Kappa) from Brown University and a juris doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School. Aimee MatchetteAimee has an extensive background in financials, being a former Financial Planner and CPA for small businesses. She invested in Elements Massage nine years ago and serves as a member of the franchisee leadership team for WellBiz Brands, the franchisor for Elements. Choosing a Franchise Choosing a franchise is an individualized process. Aimee discusses the process she followed before deciding to work with the Elements Massage franchise. She also talks about key components that should be assessed during the decision making phase of choosing a franchise. Research and Practicality Aimee emphasizes the importance of research to ensure that you choose a franchise that not only suits what is important to you but also systems are compatible with your goals and personality. She also suggests that grit is a necessary component to owning a franchise, because, in the end, you are still a business owner. There will be ups and downs along the way. It is important, as a business owner, to persevere through even the toughest times to be successful. Realities Hone in on your strengths and weaknesses. Do what you do well and hire support staff to handle the rest. Key advisors Aimee feels are necessary when considering a franchise include an attorney, a real estate broker, and a banker. Be prepared with an exit strategy from the very beginning. Know the business you are buying into. Recommended Reading The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Tonight I talk about the wreck of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald Timeline: NOVEMBER 9 8:30 AM The Edmund Fitzgerald is loaded with taconite pellets at Burlington Northern Railroad, Dock 1. Superior, Wisconsin The ship is scheduled to transport the cargo to Zug Island on the Detroit River. 2:20 PM The Fitzgerald departs Lake Superior en route of Detroit with 26,116 tons of taconite pellets. 2:39 PM The National Weather Service issues gale warnings for the area which the Fitzgerald is sailing in. Captain Cooper on the Anderson radios a freighter (the Edmund Fitzgerald) that he spots. 4:15 PM The Fitzgerald spots the Arthur M. Anderson some 15 miles behind it. NOVEMBER 10 1:00 AM Weather report from the Fitzgerald. The report from the Fitzgerald shows her to be 20 miles south of Isle Royale. Winds are at 52 knots, with waves ten feet in height. 7:00 AM Weather report from the Fitzgerald. Winds are at 35 knots, waves of ten feet. This is the last weather report that the Edmund Fitzgerald will ever make. 3:15 PM Captain Jesse Cooper, (J.C.) of the S.S. Arthur M. Anderson watches the Fitzgerald round Caribou Island and comments that the Fitzgerald is much closer to Six Fathom Shoal than he would want to be. 3:20 PM Anderson reports winds coming from the Northwest at 43 knots. 3:30 PM Radio transmission between the Fitzgerald and the Anderson Captain McSorley (C.M.) to Captain Cooper (C.C.): C.M.: “Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have sustained some topside damage. I have a fence rail laid down, two vents lost or damaged, and a list. I'm checking down. Will you stay by me til I get to Whitefish?” C.C.: “Charlie on that Fitzgerald. Do you have your pumps going?” C.M.: “Yes, both of them 4:10 PM The Fitzgerald radios the Arthur M. Anderson requesting radar assistance for the remainder of the voyage. Fitzgerald: “Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have lost both radars. Can you provide me with radar plots till we reach Whitefish Bay?” Anderson: “Charlie on that, Fitzgerald. We'll keep you advised of position.” About 4:39 PM The Fitzgerald cannot pick up the Whitefish Point radio beacon. The Fitzgerald radios the Coast Guard station at Grand Marais on Channel 16, the emergency channel. Between 4:30 and 5:00 PM The Edmund Fitzgerald calls for any vessel in the Whitefish Point area regarding information about the beacon and light at Whitefish Point. They receive an answer by the saltwater vessel Avafors that the beacon and the light are not operating. Estimated between 5:30 and 6:00 PM Radio transmission between the Avafors and the Fitzgerald. Avafors: “Fitzgerald, this is the Avafors. I have the Whitefish light now but still am receiving no beacon. Over.” Fitzgerald: “I'm very glad to hear it.” Avafors: “The wind is really howling down here. What are the conditions where you are?” Fitzgerald: (Undiscernable shouts heard by the Avafors.) “DON'T LET NOBODY ON DECK!” Avafors: “What's that, Fitzgerald? Unclear. Over.” Fitzgerald: “I have a bad list, lost both radars. And am taking heavy seas over the deck. One of the worst seas I've ever been in.” Avafors: “If I'm correct, you have two radars.” Fitzgerald: “They're both gone.” Sometime around 7:00 PM The Anderson is struck by two huge waves that put water on the ship, 35 feet above the water line. The waves hit with enough force to push the starboard lifeboat down, damaging the bottom. 7:10 PM Radio transmission between the Anderson and the Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald is still being followed by the Arthur M. Anderson. They are about 10 miles behind the Fitzgerald. Anderson: “Fitzgerald, this is the Anderson. Have you checked down?” Fitzgerald: “Yes we have.” Anderson: “Fitzgerald, we are about 10 miles behind you, and gaining about 1 1/2 miles per hour. Fitzgerald, there is a target 19 miles ahead of us. So the target would be 9 miles on ahead of you.” Fitzgerald: “Well, am I going to clear?” Anderson: “Yes.
