David explains how economists will say anything if you pay them enough. Joe Manchin signs on to the climate bill, what's in it, and why did Manchin give in? Trump is promising martial law. Manufacturers of AR-15s were brought before Congress on Wednesday. David takes a close look at how those hearings revealed the ways assault weapons are marketed to white nationalists and far Right members of The Proud Boys, The Oath Keepers and The Boogaloo Boys. Also, we continue to examine the right wing's growing "insurrectionary theory” of the Second Amendment, and the false belief that our Founding Fathers believed citizens needed guns to check an "overly intrusive" government. We look at the midterms, and ask if things might be looking better at least politically for Biden and the Democrats. David Rubenstein, founder of The Carlyle Group, is said to be the single largest war profiteer in the world. Why is President Biden and his family of grifters spending Thanksgiving weekend staying inside Rubenstein's $30 million dollar Nantucket estate? What exactly is The Carlyle Group? Does Biden even know that the Bin Laden family was one of the The Carlyle Group's earliest investors? Along with the Bush family? Why does a war profiteer like David Rubenstein chair the Council on Foreign Relations, or The Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts? David Rubenstein donates fifteen million dollars to Ken Burns and millions more to the PBS and then mysteriously ends up with his own television show on the PBS. How is that ethical? Why do so few people know where Rubenstein's blood money comes from? Why is the The Carlyle Group allowed to play the stock market while at the same time own NSA and CIA contractor Booz Allen? Why does a private investor like David Rubenstein have access to our government's intelligence agencies? It's a Feldsgiving celebration! Turkey-optional. Genocidal colonial history- acknowledged. Tonight we give thanks for our guests' intellectual bounty. Like the early Euro-American colonists, David arrives on the shores of tonight's taping without any resources. Will he find people naïve and generous enough to offer their talents, not realizing he'll suck them dry and leave them with nothing? Audience questions, our friendly neighborhood Canadians, and any Americans who don't have something better to do round out tonight's Feldsgiving lineup. Despite what the Democratic establishment wants you to believe, Tuesday was a big win for The Left. America's Left is now more powerful and more influential than at any time since 1972. On Tuesday, Minneapolis voted in favor of rent control; Cleveland voted in favor of a comprehensive groundbreaking crack down on police brutality; Austin voted to defund the police; Progressive Larry Krasner made history by getting reelected as Philadelphia's district attorney; Cleveland, Boston and Pittsburgh elected progressive mayors; Phil Murphy, not quite progressive but almost, became New Jersey's first Democratic governor to win a second term since 1977; Shontel Brown kept Marcia Fudge's Democratic congressional seat. Democrats only lost Virginia, and only Virginia, because they ran Terry McAuliffe-- a Neoliberal Wall Street flunky with a criminal past who stood for NOTHING other than more of the same. On today's show we explain in detail why Democrats only win when they run to the Left.
We recap the last week on the tours, including wins for Aslan Karatsev and Anett Kontaveit in Moscow, Jannik Sinner in Antwerp and Ann Li in Tenerife, plus a couple of quiz questions.
It's our 50th episode! Thank you so much to all of you who have supported us during our podcasting journey these past seven months. In this episode, we reflect on our path to 50 and the ever dramatic week of tennis that's unfolding before our eyes this week, complete with everything from young talents breaking through in Mexico (both on the ATP and WTA), home country WTA dominance in Russia, and a final of dark horses in Dubai. The two of us discuss the all-Russian lineup in St. Petersburg (as well as the resurgence of WTA veterans Kuznetsova and Zvonareva), the Harris vs. Karatsev final in Dubai, Lorenzo Musetti's endearing run in Acapulco (along with a side conversation about the appeal--or lack thereof--of one handed backhands, of course), and our hopes for an Ann Li vs. Leylah Fernandez final in Monterrery. We had a blast recording our 50th episode, so we hope you join in to listen on our discussion on everything from the tennis to the tea. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/holdontoyourracket/message
Snize and Jon get into all the action as the 3rd round is set to get underway from Melbourne Park. Time stamps below.
Facing a break point late in the third set, Rafael Nadal sprinted to his left and hit a running, around-the-post forehand that landed just inside the line.Laslo Djere, ranked 56th, shrugged, his head dropped and he no doubt wondered what more he needed to do to win a point against the 20-time major champion. He'd had three break points when Nadal was serving for the second set, and didn't get close to cashing in one. When Djere, going for everything, double-faulted to open what became the last game of the match, a woman in the crowd at Rod Laver Arena yelled out ""It's all right, Laslo."Easy for her to say.Nadal finished off a 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 win in just under two hours when Djere, facing triple match point, served another double-fault.The 34-year-old Spaniard showed no signs of a back problem that hampered his preparation for the year's first major.Nadal didn't play for Spain at the ATP Cup last week and was troubled by stiffness in his lower back during practice."Well, it's been a tough 15 days for me. I had some issues with the back," Nadal said in his post-match interview. "I needed to survive today. That's what I did. Straight sets — that's what I need.""That's it. I can't say much more," he added. "Today I found a way to be through."While Nadal has been slowly building into the tournament, Russia's ATP Cup-winning teammates have been on a roll.Fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev extended his winning streak to 15 matches with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win over Vasek Pospisil and seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev beat Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.Defending champion Sofia Kenin struggled in her first match as a defending champion at a Grand Slam tournament before setting aside an early deficit and beating 133rd-ranked Australian wild-card entry Maddison Inglis 7-5, 6-4."I'm obviously not too happy with the way I played," Kenin said, chuckling, "but a win is a win.""First round, it's obviously nerves for me," added Kenin, who followed up her breakthrough major title here last year by reaching the final at the French Open. The woman Kenin defeated for the title in Melbourne, two-time major champion Garbiñe Muguruza, also advanced to the second round, defeating Margarita Gasparyan of Russia 6-4, 6-0.But Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Australian Open champion and the runner-up at last year's U.S. Open, appeared to have trouble breathing and received medical attention in the second set of a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Jessica Pegula of the U.S.Azarenka didn't want to discuss her health afterward, but she did note how difficult it was to prepare for a major tournament after being one of 72 players who were in a hard quarantine for two weeks — not allowed to leave their hotel rooms for any reason — after potentially being exposed to COVID-19 on her flight to Australia."The biggest impact for me personally has been not being able to have fresh air," the 12th-seeded Azarenka said. "That really took a toll."Paula Badosa also lost in the first round after going through a three-week isolation because she tested positive for COVID-19. Badosa served for the match but dropped the last four games and was beaten 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-5 by Russian qualifier Liudmila Samsonova. In other results on Day 2 on a sunny day with the temperature in the low 70s Fahrenheit (low 20s Celsius), Australian wild-card entry Alexei Popyrin beat No. 13 David Goffin 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6,(6), 6-3 and 17-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz had a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over Botic Van de Zandschulp to become the youngest man to win a Grand Slam match since Thanasi Kokkinakis in 2014.And an even younger player, 16-year-old Coco Gauff, won 6-3, 6-2 against Jil Teichmann to set up a second-round showdown against No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina.A seeded woman exited the tournament when Ann Li, a 20-year-old American playing in her third Grand Slam tournament, beat No. 31 Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-0 to improve to 5-0 this season.Li is coming off an unusual accomplishment at a tune-up tournament...
