Notre Dame Football Coach Lewis Cook, Jr. and Gaylon White, the author of the soon-to-be-released book, Coach of a Lifetime: The Story of Lewis Cook Jr., Legendary High School Football Coach, join Discover Lafayette to discuss Louie's incredible and historical journey in coaching over the past 50 years. Coach Louie Cook is renowned for being among the best high school football coaches ever and for his winning teams. He has been inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame. In 2019, the New Orleans Saints honored him as their High School Coach of the Year. One of Coach Cook's favorite movies is "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." There is a great quote, " When the legend becomes fact, print the legend! Gaylon says, "We printed the legend!" Getting to the top of Coach Cook's field has involved staying true to the three F's: Faith, Family, and Football, in that order. Young men learn that character, discipline, and doing the right thing will lead to a bright future. Coach Cook playing quarterback for Rayne High School. Coach Cook's mission is to build young men into adults who respect others, follow the rules, and develop discipline in all areas of life. It's not about winning....it's about the process, about showing up and doing the right thing. All the other things, such as winning, take care of themselves if you get the fundamentals down. And Coach Cook motivates his young players to do the right thing by treating them as people who are capable of doing the right thing! We wish all young men had mentors such as Coach Louie Cook who took the time to look them in the eye when they are talking....and treat them as they were the only person in the room...in the world! Gaylon White's newest book on Lewis Cook, Jr. may be pre-ordered at Barnes & Noble or Amazon. One of his proteges was the outstanding Orlando Thomas who played under Coach Cook at Crowley High School and then USL, before going on to play for the Minnesota Vikings. Coach Cook and Thomas enjoyed a bond that was unbreakable and full of love. Orlando Thomas was one of many stars that Cook coached, including Brandon Stokley and Jake Delhomme. Pictured here with a sculpture given to him by NFL Defensive Back Orlando Thomas commemorating him as "Coach of a Lifetime" is Coach Lewis Cook, Jr. Sadly, Orlando Thomas who wore the number 42 on his jersey passed away at 42 years of age. His father passed away at the age of 42. Gaylon Thomas pointed out the poignancy of his life: Orlando was the 42nd draft pick in the NFL draft in 1995. Coach Cook was in effect, his father. "The one word you hear the least from our staff is 'winning.' We preach more to the kids that if you do the right thing, if you work hard, everything takes care of itself. We don't harp on the outcome of what they are doing. A winning record doesn't make you a winner. A losing record doesn't make you a loser. It's how you go about doing the things you do every day. We preach to the kids, just do things right." Coach Louie Cook, pictured center, being honored as Saints High School Football Coach of the Year in 2019. There are 160 young men at Notre Dame High School this year....and in this summer's first practice on June 5th at 5:30 a.m., 73 boys showed up. By 6 am, when everyone was present for practice, there were 121 boys. They average between 110 and 115 for seven days now! The coach doesn't cut players; anyone who wants to play is on the team. We first met Gaylon White a couple of years ago on this podcast when he released a book entitled, The Best Little Baseball Town in the World” which highlighted Crowley LA and the Evangeline Baseball League. His writing style is impeccable and he pulls the reader in with his attention to detail and ability to become a part of the story being shared. He is also able to solicit well-known sportsmen and coaches who vouch for the stories he tells. Interestingly,
Former students recall legendary record hops of the 1960s, '70s and '80s at Notre Dame High, and their benefactor, Fr. Bryson Show notes: (0:04) The narrator sets the scene of the 1960s, when teenagers looked forward to Friday nights at the record hops at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods. Those legendary memories weren't complete without the memory of Fr. John “Hollywood” Bryson, a Marist priest who rubbed shoulders with celebrities and brought in the era's hottest acts to play sets. (2:26) Fr. Bryson's former students, including musician Simone Vitale, actor Dave Coulier (of “Full House” fame) and Notre Dame alum Jerry Alderman describe their memories of “the rock ‘n' roll priest.” (6:28) Alderman talks about serving as a DJ for Fr. Bryson's legendary dances. Often, this led to opportunities to meet stars in the music industry — and even to pick up girls. (13:27) Vitale recalls the impact Fr. Bryson had on his budding music career, particularly the humility he instilled in his students. Fr. Bryson's rules helped keep students with “big egos” on the straight and narrow. (16:47) Coulier, who played “Uncle Joey” on the hit 1990s sitcom “Full House,” talks about how Fr. Bryson identified talent in students — especially those who might otherwise be dismissed as a “class clown.” (23:05) Notre Dame High School Alumni Association president Jim Mandl recalls Fr. Bryson's legendary jukebox, and how he was known for playing songs in the school cafeteria. (26:08) Alderman remembers how Fr. Bryson didn't just understand young people — he cared deeply for his students and worked to ensure they made the most of the gifts God gave them. (27:12) Vitale talks about the excitement of the era, the unrepeatable music and the legendary record hops that Fr. Bryson and others made famous. Vitale agrees with others' assessment: There will never be another Fr. John “Hollywood” Bryson. Michael H. Miller has been deeply involved in both high school and college debate since 1965. At the University of Houston (TX), from which he graduated with a B.S.in Political Science in 1970, Michael won first place in more than twenty major college debate tournaments, and was Top Speaker at the National Debate Tournament his senior year. He won the National Professional Debate Tournament in the Summer of 1970 before moving to California. Michael began coaching debate full-time in the Fall of 1970 and, among other achievements, mentored the NDT National Champions of 1971 (UCLA), as well as the high school Lincoln-Douglas National Debate Champion in 1982. He was named the California High School Speech Association "Speech Coach of the Year" for his work at Notre Dame High School in 1982-83, was unanimously elected the University of Houston Forensics Society Hall of Fame in 2007, and was a featured character in the 2008 documentary film, "Debate Team." In addition to his debate training, Michael earned his Juris Doctorate degree (J.D.) from the Southwestern University School of Law in 1984, and is a licensed trial attorney. • In this episode, Robert and Michael discuss the changes from tournaments in the 1960s to today, review what Extemp questions were offered back then, and somehow get into the way that politicians debate differently than forensics. On this episode, we have the very motivational story of Ben Schtolzberg. As Gil would naturally take a shine to, Ben is a valley kid that has worked his way up the ranks with very little hype or attention. A starting point guard as a freshman at Notre Dame High School, he went from running an offense on an upperclassmen heavy team, to taking over the squad the next season. Now, heading into his junior year, he’s putting up numbers that get him visits to UNC, Davidson and programs across the country. Still, what makes Ben interesting is his ability to remain humble, while shouldering a great deal of responsibility, all with big time expectations. He wants to be pushed, is never satisfied and is absolutely locked in on getting to the league. Throw in legit talent and Agent Zero is crafting another SoCal scoring guard that can do it all. Gil has been watching him for a few years now, seen the work Ben puts in with his trainer Dash Lovell, and the proof is in the results on the court year-to-year.

Dave Durante - Colourful nicknames have followed Dave Durante throughout his two decade lacrosse career: Dave the Magnificent, Dandy Dave and Dave the Dude; all adorned him as wellas one of his tailored silk suits, but sobriquets notwithstanding, he has always been awinner. Few, if any, players can boast victories in lacrosse’s four major championships. He took part in 9 Mann Cup series, winning the Canadian title 5 times. He was amember of the 1971 Richmond Roadrunners that upset favoured Peterborough for theMinto Cup junior title. In 1975, he toiled for the National Lacrosse League Quebec Caribous that captured the professional championship. And he was a member of the Canadian rep team that won the World Field Lacrosse title in Manchester, England, in 1978. Lacrosse has long been Durante’s passion and pastime, but this was not always the case. When Durante was a youngster, he was content to restrict his lacrosse activities to watching father Joe Durante and Uncle John Cervi play senior ball...mind you, Durante did play a little catch in his backyard, but baseball, soccer, hockey and high school football quenched his athletic thirst. Listing his sports reveals why he had little time for organized lacrosse. At Notre Dame High School, he was quarterback and safety for the first Jugglers team to win the Shrine Bowl. As a shortstop, he caught the eye of major league scouts from the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. When his hopes for a college baseball scholarship in the U.S. did not materialize, he enrolled at the University of B.C. where he played hockey and soccer while working towards a Bachelor degree in Physical Education. Impressed with his hockey prowess, the Detroit Red Wings offered him a spot in its farm system; and his skills as a midfielder earned him an offer to join a Fourth Division soccer club in England. He declined the hockey and soccer overtures and decided to take his backyard lacrosse intoa box. At the age of 18, Durante tried out for the Vancouver Junior B squad and was aninstant success, racking up 22 goals and 20 assists in 18 games. He moved to the Richmond Junior A team the following year, gathering 30 goals and 23 assists on the way to the 1971 Minto Cup title. Richmond lost the national championship thefollowing season but his 36 goals and 31 assists were enough to impress the Senior teams. The WLA overage junior draft was introduced in 1973 and Coquitlam, with firstpick, selected him. Despite a painful ankle injury that often cut his speed in half, Durante picked up 26 goals and 23 assists and was named the WLA Rookie-of-the-Year.After capturing the WLA scoring title in 1974, he joined the Quebec entry in the National Lacrosse League, earning 242 points in 60 league and playoff games. It was back to Coquitlam in 1976 for a 4-year stint until he was traded to the Salmonbellies prior to the 1980 season. He remained there for the next 12 seasons before retiring in 1991 at the age of 39.“I had a passion for the game,” he once told a reporter. “I am proud of what I accomplished statistic-wise, but more than that, I was a team player, that’s what I was all about.” He has scored 351 WLA playoff points, a league record. He once held the Mann Cup assistrecord, later broken by ex-teammate Geordie Dean, but he is still the fourth highestMann Cup point getter with 105. His league, playoff and Mann Cup points total 1,509, is third behind only Wayne Goss and Paul Parnell on the all-time WLA scoring list. His pro Quebec stats of 242 raised his career point total to 1,751. He was named the Mike Kelly Award winner (Mann Cup MVP) in 1976, won the Maitland Trophy for sportsmanship in 1974 and was placed on the WLA All--Star Team 8 times. Of course, as previously mentioned, he took the Rookie-of-the-Year honours in 1973. He was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997.
I never met Nick Fagnano but I’ll always remember the day, in 2015, when I met his father Jay. I was attending a pre-season meeting for the parents of Notre Dame High School’s baseball players. It was a baseball meeting like many I had attended before, until suddenly it wasn’t. After the usual announcements and requests for volunteers, Tom Dill, Notre Dame’s head coach, introduced Jay who, coach Dill informed us, had an announcement. Everyone in attendance grew quiet as Jay stepped to the front of the room. I think most if not everyone in the room that night were familiar with the story of Nick Fagnano, the former Notre Dame Student and baseball player, who the previous summer had tragically lost his life when a lightning storm struck Venice Beach. The lightning strike claimed 13 victims. Nick was the only fatality. Jay fought back tears as he told us of his plans for the upcoming baseball season. He would use his passion and background in food service to transform the Notre Dame Baseball Stadium concession stand into a venue offering restaurant-quality food. As Jay continued, it became clear his vision wasn’t just about delivering delicious food; it was about reconnecting with the Notre Dame community and, in particular, the baseball team. And, most of all, I believe, it was about connecting with Nick. Jay and his wife Mary know that no greater heartbreak exists than the loss of a child. Yet, in spite of their pain, they have found the strength and courage to share Nick’s story through Thrive in Joy the Nick Fagnano Foundation (TJNFF). What they have achieved in a short time is impressive and inspiring. Today is Mother’s Day and I am grateful for the opportunity to introduce you to Nick’s mom, Mary Fagnano, as she shares Nick’s story. No, I never met Nick Fagnano but through Mary and Jay’s charitable mission I feel like I know Nick and that he has touched my soul. I am sure that if you listen to today’s episode and choose to follow and support Thrive in Joy Nick will touch yours as well. There are many ways to support Mary and Jay in sharing Nick’s story. There are many great stores of support and friendship in our industry. This is Mark Bergasse’s story. He owns Marks Auto Service in Oakville, ON, Canada. Mark encountered chest pains over a few months, did a stress test and found out that he had a mild heart attack and was scheduled for a quadruple heart bypass. With this, he had no plans of being out of his shop for surgery or recovery. His wife, Sandy knew she needed a plan, that didn’t exist. What happened next is the story you are about to hear. As if providence lent its hand, Glenn Colling of Eastside Auto Service in Oakville, ON, Todd Sarson of Stop N Go Automotive, Burlington, ON and Carlo Sabucco of Sils Complete Auto Care Centre in Oakville, ON came to the rescue. They ran the business for Mark and Sandy while Mark recovered. The strong culture already in place provided a smooth transition while Mark recovered. There are some very strong and valuable lessons to think about as a business owner when and if you or your business would ever have to deal with a health or some other type of challenge or disaster. You need to have a contingency plan. This episode, I hope, will open your eyes to do something about it because you think it will never happen to you. The Panel: Mark Bergasse started in this great trade pumping gas at a full serve station and then moved into the bays to start his automotive training. He later graduated from Mohawk College and completed my Apprenticeship. In 1995 Mark’s dream came true and he opened his own shop and Mark’s Auto Service was born! Mark expanded to our present location in 2006 with 7 service bays and a larger showroom. He has been taking care of people and their cars for over 38 years. Every day is a new challenge and every day Mark loves to help people. Carlo Sabucco started in 1994 after attending several years at Ryerson University for business. Thereafter graduated Mohawk college Automotive Tech Program. Carlo has devoted a great amount of time surrounding himself with some of the greatest shop owners in the market. Over the years, Carlo attended training from Bob Greenwood to Cecil Bullard, Dave Schedin, Elite and group process with Jim Murphy, thru to Kelly Bennett, now he is with ShopPros. Today Carlo operates Sils Complete Auto Care Centre, a successful 8 bay facility, approx 7,000 square feet on the east side of Oakville, Ontario. Carlo’s own close competitors are his greatest friends like Mark and Glenn from the Podcast. Mark says that his business would never be what it is without these business owners. Glenn Colling is a graduate of Northwood University, Cedar Hill Texas. He is the owner of Eastside Auto Service in Oakville, ON with two locations. Glenn created and developed the “Auto Repair Shop-In-A-Box” that is used to teach children a skill and support the Village of Hope in Burkina Faso West Africa. Glenn has a busy home life as he and his wife Lisa have three children of their own, and provide foster care for over 33 newborns to date. Todd Sarson was born and raised in Burlington Ontario where he attended Notre Dame High School. Todd developed an interest in vehicles and just about anything hands-on at a very early age. With that interest, Todd then went on to trades school at Mohawk college and further advanced his automotive knowledge. Todd then joined the Stop N GO team in 2004 as a trusted service advisor and then worked his way to the service manager, and now the owner. In his spare time, Todd can be found dirt biking, skateboarding, swimming, or playing hockey. Coach John McKenna retired after 16 seasons as Athletic Performance Director and Assistant Football Coach at Notre Dame High School in New Jersey , and was a strength coach and football coach for over 32 years. A member of St. John the Baptist Parish and Knights of Columbus, he has developed a foundation program for younger athletes that teaches the basics of fottball and also enhances their athletic ability. This program has been copied and highlighted throughout the country. Coach John McKenna is a big man with a big message. He challenges men to go on the offensive and grow closer to God. Coach tell us to man up, take the offensive and no longer hide from society behind over-the-top political correctness. God is the rewarder of those who diligently seek him, not the rewarder of those who “kinda sorta” follow him.

Our guest for this week’s episode is Nick Garcia, strength and throws coach for Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, CA. Nick is also part of the HMMR Media Podcast along with Martin Bingisser which hosts many thought leaders in sport science. This article is brought to you by Train Heroic (www.trainheroic.com), which is the athlete management platform I use for all of my online client training, as well as my online training groups, such as “Legendary Athleticism”. I’m excited to have Nick on the show because of his experience as a traditional strength coach, throws coach, and a Bondarchuk method user. Coaches are often intrigued by the Bondarchuk method, as it has yielded such incredible results in the realm of the throws, but there is a lot of confusion as to how its principles might actually carry over into all other training systems. Nick is a great guy to talk to in this regard, as on this podcast, we go over many of the ideas that Bondarchuk had that can filter to training any event, as well as case studies in regards to related concepts, such as delayed transformation, “lag” of peak performance in Bondarchuk vs. traditional training, velocity based work, and more. If you aren’t familiar with the Bondarchuk style of training, you can check out more about it by checking out this series by Martin Bingisser on 8-Weeks Out. I’ll do a quick explanation of the Bondarchuk system as well here: The core of the Bondarchuk system is doing one (although some coaches will alternate 2 or possibly 3) workout, repeatedly, tracking the result of the “CE” or competitive exercise (such as hammer throw distance), until an athlete “adapts” by increasing to their highest peak in CE performance. Athletes will typically require 20-40 training sessions of the same type before they reach their highest adaptation of the cycle, at which point, the cycle is ended. Each athlete has their own consistent, individual reaction. The Bondarchuk system also utilizes a “Vertical Integration” system, where the whole spectrum of athletic qualities (Competitive exercise, special exercises, weightlifting, and circuit style strength) is trained in tandem throughout the year. A sample training day could look something like this: Warmup Shot Put Throw 25 Throws Medicine Ball Special Throw 5x10 Clean 5 x 3-5 reps @ 65-70% ½ Squat 5 x 3-5 reps @ 65-70% Fitness Circuit (4 exercises) 3x10 reps This workout would then be repeated until an athlete adapted to the training. Quite simply, the Bondarchuk system uses exercises in a vertical integration manner, has a repetitive, simple planning scheme, and relies on the individual adaptation pattern of each athlete. Key Points Nick’s thoughts on the black and white nature of utilizing the Bondarchuk method. Bondarchuk’s GPE circuit, and it’s influence on Nick’s use of core circuit workout finishers The effects of strength gain in the Bondarchuk system vs. traditional programming Management of the CNS in traditional style programming through Nick’s 4 week cycle formatting The timing of adaptation in deloading in Traditional lifting vs. the Bondarchuk model Delayed transformation of maximal strength to best throws/speed-strength performance in traditional training vs. Bondarchuk model Velocity based training, and it’s carryover to throws training and the Bondarchuk model The role of max strength in traditional powerlifting movements vs. specific and high velocity training methods How Nick sets his barbell weights at the beginning of each training cycle, based on velocity based training, and assumed improvement of bar speeds over the course of the training cycle How to use VBT in conjunction with a portal system to determine athletic readiness The role of bands and chains in traditional training, as well as the Bondarchuk system, and why not to use them for specific developmental exercises

**Today's host(s):** Scot Landry and Susan Abbott **Today's guest(s):** Sr. Mary Corripio and Sr. Marietta Brown of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur * [Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur](http://www.sndden.org/) * [Vocation website](http://www.askansnd.org) **Today's topics:** Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur **Summary of today's show:** Scot and Susan are joined today by Sr. Mary and Sr. Marietta to discuss the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, an international religious order with strong roots in Boston ad a tradition of educating young women and the poor, serving them and bringing them the light of Christ. **1st segment:** Scot welcome Susan back to the show. He noted that she is co-hosting on Monday, not Thursday, because of her fondness for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She went to a Notre Dame Sisters high school. The sisters have many schools in Boston and have had a profound effect on the Archdiocese of Boston. Susan said St. Julie, the foundress, had a particular devotion to educating young women, especially poor women. Scot noted that his mom is 65 years old today. She is the number one fan of The Good Catholic Life. Scot welcomed Sr. Mary Corripio and Sr. Marietta Brown. Sr. Marietta grew up in Dorchester, as many Notre Dame sisters have. She went to public school until high school when she went to an SND high school. After school, she joined the Sisters of Notre Dame, which was the only congregation she knew. She attended Emmanuel College, Boston State, and Boston College. She taught in many towns around Boston and then was appointed as a principal in the Midwest then came back for a time. She later spent eight years in South Africa doing teacher training. She now works in a preschool in New Mexico on a Navajo reservation. Reaching out to the poor is one of the founding charisms of the congregation. It is incredible to see how the people remain joyful even in their struggles. Sr. Mary found the SND when she went to college. She grew up in Louisiana and wanted a Catholic women's education like she had in high school. She found Trinity College where she got the call. After college, she went to Japan to teach English for a year. After that, she went to Europe on a pilgrimage to figure out what she wanted to do. She ended up in the town where St. Julie was born in the 18th century. She met the Sisters of Notre Dame in the village and ended up staying there for a weekend. That was the beginning of her life with the order. Her first ministry was to work in the Archdiocese of Boston in the Office of Cultural Diversity. She said working working with immigrants is a big part of the ministry of the order. She now works in the vocations office for the order. In the US, they have five people working in vocation ministry in California, Ohio, New Mexico and the US. **2nd segment:** St. Julie Billiart came from a large family and was a very religious child attending church daily. She was recognized as an extraordinarily spiritual child and received the Eucharist at an earlier age than other children. At one point in her life, her dad was confronted with violence and she was so shocked by the incident that she was paralyzed. Nevertheless, she continued to educate young women in religious instruction from her sick bed. Even after her recovery she continued to impress others with her special faith. She was constantly heard to say in all circumstances, "God is good." When God gave her the vision to found the order, it was through the cross. She saw women in a particular habit joined in prayer around the cross. She saw the cross was not just suffering, but also joy. Sr. Marrietta said the physical cross was making her stronger spiritually because she had a strong trust in God's will. At the time in France, the government was persecuting the Church and she snuck into areas to bring religious instruction despite her handicap and military patrols on the lookout. In the cross we see the will of God. The cross is marking this mission so stay with it and live with it because God will provide. Sr. Mary said she began the novitiate in August 2001 and 9/11 happened one month later. St. Julie used to day that if turmoil happens at the beginning of something, God will bless it. If something happens and it's too easy, then something's wrong, St. Julie used to say. there are diocesan religious orders, there are missionary orders, and there are international orders. Missionary orders make vows and promises to deliberately go out into foreign lands. International orders can go out to foreign lands, but they can also stay in the lands where they were born and raised. Diocesan sisters sometimes go internationally, but they are vowed to the diocese and are expected to stay in the diocese normally. Sr. Mary said each kind has a gift. There's something beautiful about giving back to the community that raised you. There is also the bringing the Gospel to the ends of the earth which is also such a good witness. The first SND came to the US in Cincinnati and later to Boston. They started in the North End of Boston and have grown from there, starting schools. Many sisters have worked in parishes across the Archdiocese and are in schools in every region of the archdiocese. Sr. Marietta said when they were founded, they educated young women who were too poor for education. In the Boston area, they kept to the charism very much. The Sisters of St. Joseph educated boys and the SND educated girls. In addition to the schools, the congregational also has universities. Trinity University is in Washington, DC and Emmanuel in Boston. In Africa they have sisters in hospitals and schools in Congo and Nigeria. In Japan, they also have several schools. They are in 15 countries. **3rd segment:** The schools in the local area at which SND now work: 1. Emmanuel College, Boston, MA 2. Notre Dame Montessori School, Dorchester, MA 3. St. Michael School, Hudson, MA Sr. Marietta said the congregation is also working in the area of human trafficking. they are working to raise awareness and looking to see what they can do as a group. Sr. Mary said there was a collaboration among the various religious congregations in Boston to raise awareness about trafficking, holding symposia twice a year, giving talks at parishes and more. They also now have a safe house for women who have escaped and are trying to establish a new life. Much of the trafficking in Boston is domestic, people forced into either labor or sex exploitation. Recently a young woman was kidnapped by a neighbor and forced into prostitution in hotels around Boston. Young people are lured into a situation and taken advantage of. Sr. Marietta said internationally some families sell a child because they think the child will live the good life in America. The Cristo Rey high school model is one way to target poverty that leads to such desperation. The children get a good education and job experience. In Peru, the sisters live in the neighborhoods of extreme poverty. They are so poor that sometimes the teachers teach without pay. On the Navajo reservation the families are extremely poor as well, even to where they don't even have running water. They can't get rid of their garbage because they have to pay to bring it to the dump. They take their laundry into town because it's cheaper than bringing water to the homes. **4th segment:** Sr. Mary said the postulants and novices are very diverse. They have one woman who was born in Nigeria. Their novice is from Mexico. Another woman entering this year is a doctor from Italy and the other is from Arizona. The average age upon entry is 40. The national novitiate takes place in Cincinnati. The house in Ipwisch is a center for retreats and much of the order's local work. They house provincial offices, congregational offices, to provide a home to the elderly and infirm. Sr. Marietta said miracles take place through the prayer of the sisters living at their house. Susan said the Office for Religious Education often takes directors of religious education to Ipswich for days of recollection and formation. Sr. Mary said Cardinal Cushing was instrumental in helping the Sisters get the property in Ipswich. Scot said the cardinal was one of the biggest builders in the history of the Church in the United States. Sr. Mary said the order's sisters work locally mainly in the poorest areas. Susan recalled that Notre Academy in Roxbury when she went to school covered 16 acres between Duley and Eggleston Squares. She spoke about the sisters who were so formative in her life. The order has 1,600 sisters internationally and 400 of them are here in the Archdiocese.
