The first scene of the new Fox and Global series Murder in a Small Town is set at that most sacred of Canadian television landmarks: the diner from The Beachcombers, Mollys Reach. Seated inside, shooting a first date scene, are two actors representing several generations of Canadian acting royalty: Kristin Kreuk, the Vancouver lass who went from Edgemont to Smallville to Beauty and the Beast to Burden of Truth to starring in this fifth network series, Opposite her is Rossif Sutherland. The late, great Donald was his dad; Kiefer his half brother. No pressure.Series creator and writer Ian Weir (also Canadian) screwed up and made Rossif a Chief of Police, not a Mountie. Kristin plays a librarian/muse, not Anne of Green Gables. Otherwise, almost everything else about this series is so Canadian it apologises. Sorry.Even one of our greatest homegrown actors, R.H. Thomson, plays a dead body in the pilot. That is so Canadian.Kreuk, one of the most popular guests ever at brioux.tv: the podcast, talks about all of this and more. This Friday on 5-26-23 at 6:00 PM EST Time! The Psychic Review Panel! Entertainment Purposes Only. All Parties Are Proven Innocent Until Proven Guilty In A Court Of Law. We further in-depth look into details that have been uncovered by other sources. What really happened? What are the facts? Chance Leslie Englebert was a 25-year-old husband and father who had recently taken a new job in Moorcroft, Wyoming, before he disappeared from a family gathering on July 6, 2019. A native of Edgemont, South Dakota, Chance competed in rodeo competitions in high school and attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he studied welding and diesel mechanics. Murder is a complex and deeply troubling act that occurs for a variety of reasons. It is important to note that every individual case is unique, and motivations behind murder can differ significantly. However, there are several factors that can contribute to the occurrence of murder: 1. Personal Conflicts: Personal disputes, such as unresolved conflicts, anger, jealousy, revenge, or a desire to exert power and control over another person, can escalate to the point of murder. 2. Mental Health Issues: In some cases, individuals with untreated or severe mental health conditions may experience delusions, hallucinations, or impaired judgment, leading to violent acts, including murder. 3. Crimes of Passion: Crimes of passion often occur in highly emotional situations involving love triangles, relationship conflicts, or intense feelings of betrayal. These acts are typically impulsive and driven by overwhelming emotions. 4. Gang-Related Violence: Gangs and organized criminal activities can be a breeding ground for violence, including murder. Territory disputes, retaliation, and criminal rivalries can lead to deadly confrontations. 5. Substance Abuse: Substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs, can impair judgment, increase aggression, and contribute to impulsive behavior, potentially leading to violent acts such as murder. 6. Socioeconomic Factors: Poverty, inequality, lack of access to education or employment opportunities, and social unrest can create environments where violence and crime, including murder, are more likely to occur. 7. Ideological or Extremist Beliefs: In cases of terrorism or hate crimes, individuals may be driven by extremist ideologies or beliefs, leading them to commit acts of murder as a means to further their cause or express their hatred. It is important to remember that while these factors may help us understand some cases of murder, they do not justify or excuse the act itself. Murder is a serious crime with severe consequences, and addressing the underlying causes and working towards prevention and intervention is crucial in reducing its occurrence and ensuring public safety. #chanceEnglebert #where #walkededaway #Summerwells #murder #coldcase #unsolved #police #fbi #forensics #water #shallowgrave #missing #missingperson #kidnapoed #raped #stabbed #tied #body #buried localpolice #news #media #detectives #hotline #tips #sheriffs #deputy #deputies #drugs #narcotics #sex #dumpster #hotel #needle #heroin #prostitution #Xanax #pills #lost @TrueCrime @CrimeNews @CriminalJustice @HomicideCases @MurderMystery @CrimeSceneInvestigation @ForensicScience @ColdCase @CrimeDocumentary @SerialKiller @JusticeSystem @Criminology @CrimePrevention @LawEnforcement @VictimAdvocacy @CriminalProfiling @PrisonSystem @CrimeStatistics @GangViolence @CrimeAnalysis --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

Entertainment Purposes Only. All Parties Are Proven Innocent Until Proven Guilty In A Court Of Law. This week 05-at 6:00 PM EST TIME! New case part 1. Source: Help Find Chance Englebert Chance's mother, Dawn, describes him as “... a good kid, shy and hardworking … a smart kid …” She doesn't believe he disappeared intentionally, saying, “I never felt that Chance would leave his family.” Chance's wife, Baylee, agrees, describing Chance as “... such a good father …” who was excited to share his passion for Demolition Derby with his son. Where is this case going to go? What twist and turn? The increase in the number of missing people can be attributed to various factors, although it's important to note that data and trends can vary depending on the region and time period being considered. Here are some possible reasons for the rise in missing people: Population Growth: As the population increases, the absolute number of missing people may also rise. However, it's essential to consider the percentage or rate of missing individuals relative to the population to gain a more accurate understanding of the trend. Improved Reporting and Documentation: Advances in technology and communication have made it easier for people to report missing individuals and for law enforcement agencies to document and track such cases. This improved reporting infrastructure can contribute to the perceived increase in missing person reports. Increased Awareness and Media Coverage: Media coverage and public awareness campaigns have helped shed light on missing persons cases, making the public more vigilant and proactive in reporting and searching for missing individuals. As a result, more cases are being brought to attention and recorded. Migration and Mobility: In a globalized world, people are more mobile than ever before. Increased migration, travel, and commuting can contribute to cases of individuals going missing, especially in unfamiliar or transient environments. Vulnerable Populations: Certain demographics, such as children, adolescents, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those with mental health issues, may be more susceptible to going missing due to various factors such as exploitation, abduction, or personal struggles. Human Trafficking: The rise in human trafficking is a significant concern worldwide. Victims of human trafficking are often reported as missing persons before their exploitation is discovered, contributing to the overall number of missing individuals. Runaways and Troubled Youths: Adolescents running away from home or facing difficult circumstances can contribute to the number of missing persons. These cases often involve voluntary disappearances, but they still require attention and resources to ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals involved. It's crucial to note that comprehensive and reliable data collection, analysis, and reporting systems are necessary to accurately understand and address the issue of missing persons. Additionally, ongoing efforts in education, prevention, and support for vulnerable populations are essential to mitigate the factors that contribute to individuals going missing. https://grizzly.spiritsale.com get your shirts and merch --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

Today's Friday the 13th, 2022, and it's time for your weekly News Roundup episode, where I read the news so you don't have to. A lot happened last week and there's a lot coming up in terms of local events and things to do that you won't want to miss, including things going on tonight, so don't wait to listen! As always, you can find the show notes for this episode on my website at discoverdaytonpodcast.com.    Organizations mentioned in this episode include: Ohio Statehouse Central State University Sinclair Community College City of Dayton Ghostlight Coffee 2nd Street Market Gulzar's Indian Cuisine AES Five Rivers Health Centers Dayton Peace Prize Dayton Council on World Affairs Hall Hunger Initiative Heart Mercantile Mission of Mary's CSA Dayton Women's Rights Alliance Top of the Market Liftoff Entertainment Humane Society of Greater Dayton Blind Bob's  Shiloh Farmer's Market NCCJ Dayton Beer Company Liederkranz-Turner German Club Salar Wiley's Five Rivers MetroParks The Neon Yellow Cab Tavern TheatreLab Dayton PNC Arts Annex   Show Transcript:   Hello and welcome to the Discover Dayton podcast, the show that's all about the Gem City's past, present, and future. I'm Arch Grieve and I'm your host, and today's episode is the weekly news roundup for Friday the 13th of May 2022, so if you're superstitious be careful today. There's a lot that happened last week though, including an update to Ohio's redistricting process, good news for Dayton residents on their electric bills, and the opening of some new places to eat downtown, as well as lots of stuff to do this weekend and beyond, so stay tuned!   And now for last week's news:   Well, the news about the Ohio congressional district maps isn't great, as towards the end of last week the Republican-dominated Ohio Redistricting Commission voted down a set of maps drawn up by the consultants that they hired, and then immediately voted to approve a set of maps that the Ohio Supreme Court has already declared unconstitutional. Protestors in attendance yelled “shame,” at the commission members, but their cries were ineffective in causing any type of change amongst the members because the Republican members of the commission have no shame. Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who is a commission member, explained his rationale for supporting the third set of maps by claiming that it would be the easiest set of maps for local boards of elections to use. At the end of the meeting, Democratic Minority House Leader Allison Russo read out a “minority report,” which laid the blame for the redistricting process mess at the feet of her Republican counterparts.    Also happening at the state level right now is discussion around a bill that would put an end to local municipalities' abilities to manage short-term rentals, such as Airbnbs. House Bill 563 is currently being debated at the Ohio Statehouse, with opponents of the bill saying that it would take away home rule from cities and curtail their ability to self-govern, so now is your time to contact your local representative or senator if you have an opinion about it.    Central State University's Dayton Campus is getting a cash infusion from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which is awarding the HBCU $3.6 million in ARPA funds to quote, “tackle workplace shortages,” which have been made worse by the pandemic. Much of the money will go towards funding workshops that are geared towards educating students about advanced materials, advanced manufacturing, IT, and advanced data management. Central State is also putting in an additional nearly $90K towards its Workforce Training and Business Development Center, which will specialize in employment-related training. As a result of the expansion, Central State is expecting a 50% increase in enrollment this fall and expects to go from 2,000 students to 3,000 who are physically attending campus classes, and from 4,000 to 7,000 students attending online.    Just for full transparency for this next story, I need to acknowledge that I am a Sinclair employee, but Sinclair has had some good news recently in that it graduated a record number of students at last week's graduation ceremony, with 8,919 students being awarded degrees or certificates, or a 14% increase over last year. Of those, a record number were also black men, 1,548 students to be exact, as well as a record number of minority students at just over 3,000.    There's good news for Dayton residents recently from the city, which is that they recently announced that residents will be getting 100% renewable energy starting in June of this year which will be 30% cheaper than AES Ohio's standard service rate, which is the company that used to be DP&L. They also assured residents that Dayton will not be impacted by the recent rate hikes proposed by AES thanks to the new aggregation program. Savings are expected to average approximately $300 per Dayton customer over the 12-month period that the deal is in effect, for a total of $10 million combined for all residents in savings. If you wish to participate in the program, you don't have to do anything, but if you wish to opt-out then letters are being sent out soon.    There's good news for Ghostlight Coffee fans, which is that you can now find them on weekends at the 2nd Street Market. They're opening a bagel bakery there called DOUGH. Ghostlight owner, Shane Anderson, told the Dayton Daily News that he always wanted to have a location in the market, but that there was already a coffee shop there. However, they learned recently that there was an opening for a sandwich shop, so they put forward the concept of a bagel soup and sandwich shop, and now they're in the soft opening phase of its existence. They plan to release more items moving forward, but you can also find them at their original location on Wayne Ave. or over next to Old Scratch on Patterson Blvd. They'll also soon be coming to the Dayton Arcade.    In other news-related food, I'm sure many of you will be as excited as I am to learn that there's a new Indian restaurant in downtown Dayton now. The family-owned Gulzar's Indian Cuisine opened last Thursday at 217 N. Patterson, just across from the Dragon's stadium and next to Winans and Flyboys. Wife and husband Deepika and Jay Singh co-manage the restaurant together, and Jay's brother manages the family's other restaurant in Richmond, Indiana. The restaurant features authentic Indian cuisine, including my favorite, chicken tikka masala, but if you're looking for their most authentic dishes you can find those on the menu under Chef Specials. They also have a lunch buffet, which is $13.99. You can find their menu and learn more at gulzarsindiancuisine.com. I just had lunch there earlier this week and I definitely recommend it!   There's a new Five Rivers Health Centers campus in the Edgemont neighborhood of Dayton after they held its grand opening Wednesday of this week. The campus location will provide a number of different health services, including dental care, women's health, sports medicine, eye care, and primary care. After being founded just over ten years ago, Five Rivers Health Centers now has 9 locations geared towards providing health services to low-income residents. The new facility is now accepting patients, and you can learn more at fiverivershealthcenters.org.    Last week former Congressman and Ambassador, Tony Hall, received the Dayton Peace Prize, which is awarded jointly by the Dayton Council on World Affairs and the Dayton Peace Prize Selection Committee. Hall was a US Congressman from 1979 to 2002, after which he served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture. He also started the Hall Hunger Initiative here in Dayton. Past recipients of the award include President Bill Clinton, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.    Well if you're in the Oregon District looking for Heart Mercantile then you'll need to find them in their new location, which is on the other side of the street from their old one. They're now at 601 E. Fifth St. across from Trolley Stop in a space that's double the size of their old location. Also starting today, they are now open one hour later every day, with hours from 11:00am to 8:00pm now. Learn more at heartmercantile.com.   If you're in the market for sustainable, locally-grown produce, then you might want to check out Mission of Mary's CSA, or community-supported agriculture. Their CSA program runs from this month until November of this year, with pickups every Wednesday from 2:00-6:00pm. You can sign up to get vegetables weekly from them on their website at missionofmary.org.    And finally, before we get to the more fun events happening this weekend and beyond, there's also a Rally for Abortion Rights at Courthouse Square this Saturday, May 14th from 2:00-3:00pm. You can learn more about the event on the Dayton Women's Rights Alliance on Facebook or end40days on Instagram.    All right, and now for things to do in Dayton:   If you're looking for a drive-in movie experience but don't want to travel very far, you can go and see the Princess Bride tonight at Top of the Market Banquet Center, which is hosting a pop-up drive-in movie screening in conjunction with Liftoff Entertainment. The cost is $30-40 per vehicle and the lot opens at 7:30pm with the movie starting at 8:45pm. You can visit the show notes on my website for the link to purchase tickets, which is a long EventBrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wheels-and-reels-princess-bride-tickets-321481538937   If you're more in the mood for music tonight, you can head over to Blind Bob's for a show that starts at 9:00pm. Performing tonight will be Jon Snodgrass, DL Burdon, Joe Anderl, and Josh Goldman. The cover is $10.    Pet lovers who enjoy walking or running with their animals are in luck this weekend as the Furry Skurry 5K event is happening Saturday, May 14th, from 8:00am-noon. General Admission is a $40 registration fee. After you're done running (or if you don't want to run at all) there will also be a beverage tent with bloody marys, mimosas, wine, and beer, as well as a pancake breakfast and more. This fundraising event is put on by the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, and you can find tickets at hsdayton.org/events.    Also happening on Saturday is the 2022 opening day for the Shiloh Farmers Market, which takes place at 5300 Philadelphia Dr from 9:00am to 2:00pm. In addition to the veggies you can purchase, the Smokin' Barrels Food Truck will be there as well.    Another thing you can do Saturday is participate in the Pride Rocks! suicide prevention program, where you can join in rock painting, enjoy a free meal, participate in educational programming about mental health, and listen to LGBTQ+ musicians. The event is free to attend, and goes from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Levitt Pavilion. The event is put on by the NCCJ, or the National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Dayton.    And there's more happening tomorrow, including the Dayton Beer Company's 10th anniversary celebration, which goes from noon to 11:00pm Saturday, May 14th. The event promises to have fun for the whole family, including the little ones, with live entertainment, games, and more. So cheers to 10 years to the Dayton Beer Company!   And if that wasn't enough, you can also visit the Liederkranz-Turner's Biergarten on Saturday from 5:00-10:00pm. Trivia is back, and there are now over 70 German beers you can try. Food is available, and there are games and activities for people of all ages.    If you'd like to see the Dayton Playhouse's production of “Hello Dolly,” the only remaining tickets the last I checked were for Saturday night at 8:00pm, so visit daytonplayhouse.com soon for info on how to get tickets.    And finally moving on to Sunday, May 15th, you can stop at the 2nd Street Market if you've been collecting pop tabs, which of course were invented here in Dayton, and participate in Tab-a-PULL-Ooza, which is a family-friendly event that benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Dayton. There's a competition to see who has the most tabs, although to be honest I couldn't find what you'll win, but it all goes towards a good cause.    Also happening Sunday is a SUNDAYton Tea dance, where you can go to the Bar and Bistro and participate in a tea dance hosted by Dayton drag queens. This Sunday's show will feature Jessica Marie Jones, Jackie O, MAGESTIK, and Dana Sintell. The event takes place from 4:00-7:00pm and the cost ranges from free to $10 to attend.    Also happening Sunday evening at Salar is the Rosé All Day wine dinner, where for $89 you can get a choice of 5 wines to go with Chef Margot Blondet's patio favorites. Visit salarrestaurant.com for ticket information.    If you're in the mood for some comedy after that, you can head over to Wiley's for their Sunday Comics series, going from 7:15-9:00pm. The Sunday Comics are a mixture of local amateurs and nationally-touring acts who are working on material and perform short comedy sets. The cost is $15 and tickets can be purchased at wileyscomedy.com.    And if you need some exercise after a weekend full of food and drinks, on Monday you can head down to RiverScape MetroPark from 6:00-7:30pm and do the Boot Camp with The Unit-Community Fitness activity. On Mondays and Wednesdays, The Unit will be meeting for group fitness activities from now until October, and all fitness levels are welcomed and encouraged.   On Tuesday of course at The Neon is $6 Movie Day, and playing will be Inland Empire, Petite Maman, and The Duke. Visit neonmovies.com for showtime and ticket info.    Also on Tuesday from 6:00-7:00pm at RiverScape you can do Tai Chi and Qigong next to the river. The guided meditations, stretching, and exercises do not require any special skills or equipment in order to participate.    On Wednesday and Thursday of next week there will be performances by The Nerve, which is presenting its show “Friend Art,” by Sofia Alvarez at the PNC Annex. The Nerve is an ensemble-driven theatre company working to build a safe and encouraging artistic community in Dayton where local artists can discover their voice and explore their craft. Thursday's performance starts at 7:00pm and costs $22, although Wednesday's performance is “pay what you want” pricing. Visit daytonlive.org for more ticket information.    Friday May 20th is National Bike to Work Day, and the Fiver River MetroParks Bike to Work Day celebration is happening that morning. The first 500 riders to register and check in at the event receive a gift, and you can pre-register now online at MetroParks.org. The event takes place from 7:00-9:00am at the RiverScape Metro Park on Monument Ave. and features a free pancake breakfast, live music, a bike expo, and more, so hopefully I'll see you there!   Also starting Friday, Sideshow, one of the Dayton Yellow Cab's annual shows, is coming back this month on May 20th and 21st, after taking several years off due to Covid-19. This year performers will include Far From Eden, Tino, Nautical Theme, Snake Oil Revival, and more. Ticket information is available at yellowcabtavern.com.   TheatreLab Dayton will be ending its first season since rebranding from Dare 2 Defy Productions with the show “Something Rotten!” The show takes place at the Victoria Theatre on May 21st and 22nd and the cost to attend ranges from $18 to $63. You can purchase tickets at theatrelabdayton.org or daytonlive.org.    That's it for this week's news roundup episode, and if you enjoyed this episode please be sure to subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend. Happy Monday, Christmas fanatics!  This week is a milestone episode for "Tis the Podcast" as it's taken us nearly five years to cover anything with the Olsen twins in it! So journey with Julia, Thom, Anthony, Mary-Kate, and Ashley to Edgemont in order to visit Great-Grandma Mimi as they cover the 1992, made-for-TV classic(?), "To Grandmother's House We Go"!  Also touched upon and discussed in this jam-packed episode: our anticipation for "The Batman"; HBO Max's/James Gunn's "Peacemaker" being the most streamed show *in the world* right now; Elizabeth Mitchell reprising her role as Mrs. Claus alongside Tim Allen's Santa in the upcoming Disney+ Limited Series; losing the original voice of Charlie Brown, Peter Robbins, to depression; Cancel Culture; the efforts of both Thom and Anthony to train their dogs; and much, much more - including two questions of the week! 1. With the announcements of "The Santa Clause" miniseries and the return of both Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell to the project, the *official* sequel to "A Christmas Story" with Peter Billingsley reprising his role of Ralphie Parker also coming down the pike, and Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy reprising their roles of The Sanderson Sisters in "Hocus Pocus 2" this upcoming October, do we think Hollywood will try to get the original casts of "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and "Elf" back for official sequels to those movies soon? And, if so, what are the odds the casts agree to them? 2. Courtesy of Mr. Steven Beech - a.k.a. Disco54 - "We've just gone through a couple of the worst Christmases in most people's living memory, really the worst since World War II. Has it made you reevaluate what Christmas is and should be, and if so, will you spend less or will you go harder on Christmas going forward?" Let us know on any of our social media pages, which you can easily access from our new Linktr.ee at the following link: https://linktr.ee/TisThePodcast.com.  Needless to say, this is one fun, jam-packed episode you want to be sure not to miss! So settle in and enjoy, and - as always - thanks for your love and support, y'all! We're looking forward to counting down 2022 to the next holiday season every week with all of you! (And make sure to take joy in the fact that we're already one month down already!)

Hello Interactors,Our family hit a snag in the transportation department last week. Our routine was disrupted making us scramble for remedies — including possibly needing a new car. It all came at a time when the state of Washington released its 2021 figures on automobile related deaths. It made me wonder and reflect on car dependency, the Covid funk, and the psychology of cars. As interactors, you’re special individuals self-selected to be a part of an evolutionary journey. You’re also members of an attentive community so I welcome your participation. Please leave your comments below or email me directly. Now let’s go…CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG“It’s making a strange noise, shifts awkwardly, and smells funny,” my son and daughter exclaimed. There had been similar reports previously, but things had worsened. “It seems ok on the straights, but sounds and feels worse going down hill,” they added. Then, as my daughter got in the car to go to swim practice, she soon came back inside and said, “I’m taking the other car. Uno is making an awful noise and smells even worse than before.”Our kids call our 2006 Audi A3, Uno. The Washington State Licensing authority named it when it was born. They even sent us two rectangular plates with its name stamped into it, along with a few appended random numbers. We mounted one on its nose and the other on its rear-end. Our kids use Uno to commute to school 12 miles away as well as other errands, appointments, and events. They both have a bit of an emotional attachment to this aging little black hatchback. Uno even becomes Dracula during Halloween when they affix dangling white fangs on each side of the license plate frame.I’ve had an emotional attachment to Audi’s since I was a kid. I saw my first Audi in the mid-70s. It was Audi’s first car sold in the United States – The Audi Fox. A guy down the street owned one. His name was Delbert Woody. I was drawn to Delbert. He was a World War II veteran who personified the post-war male mystique. He rode a dirt bike in the open field behind his house, was an avid hunter and fisherman, drove construction trucks for a living, was a life long Teamster Union member, and loved pecan pie and Pepsi. He, like so many other war veterans, got married after the war and settled in the suburbs. They were the first to move into one of Norwalk, Iowa’s first subdivisions in 1960. Their single story ranch house, nestled neatly in a line of others just like it, sat on a hill below the water tower at the edge of town on a street aptly named: Edgemont. Also in keeping with post-war tradition, he had a fascination with cars. I remember him owning more than one and this was during the 1970s gas crisis and recession. Audi entered the U.S. market selling the Fox as a ‘solution to the gas problem.’ The Fox was marketed as a sports sedan with a sporty suspicion, front-wheel drive, and an engine that could get 25 miles to the gallon. All for $3400. That’s roughly $20,000 today. I can see how a masculine blue collar gearhead like Delbert was attracted to this car, despite it being German.I’m not sure what I liked about it. Maybe it was the novelty of a foreign car in small Iowa town, the European styling, or maybe it was the cool fox emblem on the back. Probably all the above. The truth is, Delbert and I, and all auto-dependent motorists, share something in common. We all have brains that contain two separate modules that combine to form relationships with automobiles. One of these cranial circuits uses cool calculating rational thought that views a car as a utility – an appliance. It’s sensitive to numbers: miles per gallon, range, price, 0-60, reliance ratings, and a myriad of other self-justifying statistics. The other side of the brain tugs on our heart strings. Emotional affections warm our heart in the comfort of a climate controlled cocoon. It makes our heart go pitter patter with the status cars provide, or cause our pulse to quicken at the sudden and effortless acceleration through space. Both of these neuro-negotiators conspire to construct our comforting and sometimes conniving relationships with cars. And automakers have learned how to manipulate both of these brainy battles through design and marketing.Uno got its name from a random license plate generator, but automakers are less random. For Delbert Woody’s Audi Fox, Audi wanted to associate that car with a fox. A fox is agile, strong, fast…and cunning. Many animals are. Which is why it’s not hard to find cars named after animals. Here are just a few: Plymouth Barracuda, Mercury Sable, Buick Skylark, Corvette Stingray, Pontiac Sunbird, Ford Thunderbird, Dodge Viper, AMC Eagle, Chevrolet Impala, and who can forget the Ford Pinto. As you can see all of these are American made cars. U.S. automakers also like aggressive macho sounding names. Especially Dodge, with names like Challenger, Ram, and Avenger. Europe and Japan have a few examples like the Fiat Spider or Suzuki Samurai, but nothing like the U.S. You may be thinking to yourself, what about the iconic Volkswagen Beetle? Sorry, but that’s a nickname. It’s official name in Germany was Volkswagen Type 1. What about the Volkswagen Rabbit? It was the Volkswagen Golf in Europe. And Delbert’s Audi Fox would have been called the Audi 80 anywhere else but America. The design of vehicles are also expressive. When Uno dawns his fangs at Halloween, the gimmick only works because the headlights make the eyes and the grill its mouth. Different cars take on different personalities when viewed from the front, or more commonly, when viewed in your rear view mirror. There’s speculation by some psychologists that these personalities may even be reflected in the owners and their driving behavior. There is certainly evidence that some car design and some drivers have become more aggressive over time. But it’s equally true that some aggressive looking cars are sometimes driven by passive people. Or maybe they’re using the design of their vehicle to hide or express some other hidden or deep seeded emotion or personality trait.RAGE DISPENSED THE MACHINEStefan Gössling is a professor of social science at Lund University in Sweden. He researches and writes extensively on transportation. In 2017 he released a book called The Psychology of the Car. He says there are a wide range of emotions that relate to the power and dominance that play a central role in car culture. He cites research affirming “that driving powerful cars is generally understood as a means of expressing macho personalities.” Driving a powerful car exudes superiority and control. He lists different aspects and levels of control we have driving cars:Agency: To be able to decide when to leave at any point in time, and for any given destinationSemiotics: Being in charge: control of inside (music, temperature) and outside environment (navigation system, speed), and car physics (fuel levels, revolutions per minute)Haptics: Holding the steering wheel, pushing pedals, shifting gearsSmells and soundscapes: Choice of smell or music, interiorPhysics of movement: Being able to drive fast, to accelerateBut he also quotes the sociologist, John Urry. He too wrote extensively on the sociology of mobility, especially regarding the loss of control that can come with controlling a fast moving machine. The automobile, while offering us much control, can also rob us of critical experiences. He writes,“Dwelling at speed, car-drivers lose the ability to perceive local detail, to talk to strangers, to learn of local ways of life, to stop and sense each different place. Sights, sounds, tastes, temperatures and smells get reduced to the two-dimensional view through the car windscreen and through the rear mirror, the sensing of the world through the screen being the dominant mode of contemporary dwelling. The environment beyond that windscreen is an alien other, kept at bay through the diverse privatizing technologies incorporated within the car. These technologies ensure a consistent supply of information, a relatively protected environment, high quality sounds and increasingly sophisticated systems of monitoring. They enable the hybrid of the car-driver to negotiate conditions of intense riskiness on high-speed roads.”Our roads are designed to drive at high speeds. They even include optical illusions to put you at ease. For example, the length and distance between dashed lines on highways are designed to trick your brain into believing your body is moving slower than it really is. And while there have been many amazing safety advancements in the engineering of roads and cars for those inside the vehicle, they’ve inadvertently made them increasingly dangerous for those outside of the vehicle.Washington state ended 2021 with the highest number of road fatalities in 15 years. There were more than 540 fatal crashes killing over 600 people. One hundred and eighteen of whom were walking or riding their bike. An additional 2,411 crashes were estimated to have caused serious injury – a 16% rise over 2020. Thirty one people were killed in Seattle alone in 2021.While the design of our infrastructure and vehicles encourages speed, other factors are at play as well. Alcohol and drug related crashes have continued to climb 25% since 2019. Speed also was a major factor climbing 18% since 2020.There are a multitude of interrelated factors that lead to increasing numbers of motorists killing and injuring people – especially cyclists and pedestrians. But given the social malaise that has overcome us all over the last few years, anger and aggression are likely key factors. Whether it’s lockdown lunacy, income inequity insanity, racial reality, gender gut checks, or fights between the lefts and the rights there are ample reasons for us all to be disturbed. There are also threats to the status quo. Increasingly cities are seeing bike and bus lanes squeezing out car lanes, rising gas prices, and talk of congestion fees. Meanwhile, automakers are ditching the traditional internal combustion engine for progressive green machines. These are levels of social change that many welcome, while others reject – especially those adverse to change or who feel their individualism is threatened. So they take it out on others on the road. We’ve all witnessed, or are guilty of perpetrating, acts of aggression on the road: dodging and weaving through traffic, tailgating, flashing lights, running red lights, honking, flipping the bird, or yelling out the window. Worse yet, extreme forms of road rage where people take chase in a fit of anger to inflict harm or intimidation. There are more passive aggressive examples too, like parking in a bike lane, stopping in a cross walk, or failing to yield to a blinkering merging bus.In 1994, Jerry Deffenbacher, a Colorado State psychology professor who studies correlations of anger and anxiety with behavior, created a Driving Anger Scale that scientists have been using since. Results as recent as 2016 suggest personality traits like “impulsiveness, narcissism, and normlessness” confirm studies from 2013 that link narcissism to aggressive driving. One researcher concluded: “driving anger of narcissistic individuals may result out of threats to perceived power, control, and position rather than to image and attention seeking.”Results also vary by age, gender, driver experience, and culture. In a country who’s culture flaunts and breeds narcissism, individualism, and macho maleness – possibly even overly tolerant of outward expressions of anger as an acceptable emotional response – we should not be surprised to see increased aggression on the part of some motorists.Sometimes anger directed at strangers can take the form of contempt. The car then becomes a way to separate one’s self from others deemed inferior or from an anxiety inducing changing environment. Here’s how one geography researcher, Jason Henderson of San Francisco State University, described an SUV driver in a 2006 study looking at the politics of automobility in Atlanta, Georgia.  “After spitting into a toll collection device on the highway, the angry white male described his disdain at the possible alternatives to his SUV — a compact urban form with intensive transit infrastructure containing pedestrian and transit spaces where people would have physical proximity to ‘others’ of different racial, class, gender or sexual orientation. Seen in this context, his SUV was more than just an instrument for traveling through the city. It was an instrument of secession from what he scorned in contemporary American urban space.”WITH URBAN FRICTION COMES CAR ADDICTIONWe took Uno to the doctor. We had a sneaking suspicion it may be done for. When my wife pulled into the shop they said, “You best turn that off, it doesn’t sound good. You probably should have had it towed.” But after waiting a few days for the prognosis, it turned out to be a couple bad spark plugs, failing coils, and noise inducing broken catalytic converter. When my son heard this news, he said, “Let’s straight-pipe it!” Straight-piping is when you remove emission reducing mechanisms so that the sound, and pollution, from the engine goes straight out the tailpipe. Both my son and my daughter have an affinity for loud cars. My son can tell you the make and model of a car just from the sound of the exhaust. He’s a combusting carbon connoisseur. And lucky for him, there seems to be an increasing number of loud tailpipes these days.I’m more aghast at the uproarious racket. I grumble and mutter under my own exhaust as these cars rumble by, “There goes another UAS. Urban Attention Seeker.” And it seems I’m right. Overly loud modified exhausts, or even some motorcycles (I’m looking at you Harley Davidson), are symbols of rebellion. They signal to anyone in ear shot opposition to authority and social norms. They scream, “NOTICE ME!”In Gössling’s book he cites the research of Robert Merton who is regarded by many as the founder of modern sociology. He also studied criminology where he developed strain theory which says strain in an individual can come about in a society that pressures people to attain more than they can possibly achieve. So they seek forms of rebellion. More recent advances in this theory by the criminologist and social psychologist Robert Agnew point to three factors that lead to criminal acts of rebellion. They largely stem from childhood stress, trauma, victimization, and neglect:The inability to achieve positively valued stimuli (e.g., money, status, autonomy)The loss of positively valued stimuli (e.g., loss of romantic partners, property)The presentation of negatively valued or aversive stimuli (e.g., verbal and physical abuse)But loud cars, or motorcycles, can just as easily be driven by financially successful people at the top of the social status hierarchy. These are the cars my son most admires. They’re hyper or super cars made by companies like Lamborghini, Ferrari, or Mercedes Benz. One of his favorites is the throaty land yacht by Mercedes Benz – The G Wagon. These are less emblems of rebellion and more signals of status. Both are forms of attracting attention. And so is an Audi A3. Even though it was the cheapest car Audi sold at the time, it is still a luxury German automobile. And while it is a brand I dreamed of owning since childhood, I can’t deny my purchase also helped to signal my status. If my rational brain had one out, and I viewed the purchase of the car as an appliance for mobility, I could have easily put myself into a more affordable hatchback. As one friend put it, the A3 is really just a Volkswagen Golf for grown ups. Works for me.We decided to keep Uno in the family. And sorry, son, Uno won’t be straight-piped. It’s getting a new catalytic converter…even though replacing it will cost more than the car is worth. This is the last year our kids will be driving Uno to school together and they want that little car to be a part of it.Our kids could ride a public bus to school, but it takes an hour to go 12 miles and they have afterschool activities at locations far and wide. My son took the bus for a year and it left him exhausted with little time for homework. We chose to put them in this school, but we didn’t chose the car dependent design of our surrounding cities. When it comes to car dependency, it turns out there really are two sides of the brain at work; one rational and one emotional. Gössling breaks them down into ‘real’ and ‘perceived’ dependencies. ‘Real’ dependencies are like what I just described. There are aspects of urban planning and design that intentionally require people to have a car to live a modern, happy, healthy, and productive life. The car is an appliance that gets you to the doctor, practice facility, grocery store, or school on time – places that require a car and are practically inaccessible by anyone who cannot or choses not to drive a car.‘Perceived’ dependencies are rooted in fears and emotions where, as Gössling says, “alternative transport is considered ‘dysfunctional,’ i.e., creating anxieties related to complexity (buying tickets, finding ways), claustrophobic spaces, monitoring in ‘militarized’ environments (control, security), encounters with marginalized people (homeless, alcoholics, drug addicts), or specific smells and noises. Car use may also be related to status, fright-flight-fight responses, or other fears and phobias. In such situations, car reliance may be considered an addiction.”Automakers feed this addiction through advertising, marketing, and design. As Gössling summarizes in his list of car industry appeal strategies. I can imagine these being whispered seductively to the emotional side of our brain:The car will be good: The car is increasingly less polluting and safer in trafficThe car is your home: Home and car melt into one spaceThe car is your partner: You are a more capable person in cooperation with your carThe car will protect you: It is a dangerous worldYou need the car: Appeals directed at subconsciousBe aware of government: Someone is trying to take away your carI for one am ready to break the addiction. Who knows, once our kids leave the house for college, maybe it will be time for Uno to graduate too. That someone trying to take away the car may just be me. Unless, of course, Audi releases an electric retro Audi Fox!Thank you for reading Interplace. This post is public so feel free to share it. Subscribe at interplace.io

#64 A Population of Misfits

“The times of drastic change are times of passions. We can never be fit and ready for that which is wholly new, we have to adjust ourselves and every radical adjustment is a crisis in self-esteem. We undergo a test, we have to prove ourselves. A population subjected to drastic change is thus a population of misfits and misfits live and breathe in an atmosphere of passion.” When you hear the word “misfit” it usually has a negative connotation, but Bruce Lee recasts misfits as unique individuals who are moved by their passions as he was. These misfits are passionate about ideas which society hasn’t created space for yet, so the misfits are doing pioneering work by exploring their passion. Bruce Lee was a misfit in many respects. No one knew what martial arts were in the west, no one had seen an Asian man represent masculinity like Bruce, he was mixed race, and he was in an interracial relationship when it was illegal. Bruce received much negative feedback for his misfit way of living life, but that didn’t discourage him from living in authenticity. A drastic change can feel like a major crisis, like a storm blowing through your life. We experience this personally and in our culture. It was during the 1960’s, a time of much cultural change and exploration, when Bruce conceived his ideas on the “Population of Misfits.” “With adversity, you are shocked to higher levels, much like a rainstorm that is violent but yet afterwards all the plants grow.” Sometimes there is tumult you must go through, unrest, dissatisfaction, but if you can stay true to your focus and your path, much growth can come from the turbulent time. At some point, we all feel like the “other” and that we don’t fit in--which is why Bruce Lee, the misfit, continues to resonate with people. “My contribution will be the measure of my reward and my success. Bruce and Linda weathered personal criticism and racism for being together during a time when the whole country, and their families, said that interracial relationships were wrong. If anyone started to give Bruce attitude based on his race, he would charm them with his humor and friendliness, and they would soften towards him. Showing up as himself was Bruce’s contribution. He was able to reveal his humanity to people who thought he was less than. “Our own souls are what we must employ, to give new meaning and new form to the world.” Take Action: What kind of misfit are you? Where is your area of enthusiasm, curiosity, and passion? #AAHA Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park are on the TV series Hawaii Five-0. Recently, they decided to quit the show because they asked to be paid the same amount as their Caucasian co-stars and they were denied. This was a bold move because as an Asian actor it’s really difficult to get roles, especially on a network tv show. It takes a lot of courage to take a stand like that. Daniel Dae Kim is a Korean American actor, voice actor, producer, and director. He’s known for his role as Jin-Soo Kwon on Lost, and most recently Hawaii Five-0. Grace Park is a Canadian-American actress of Korean heritage. She is known for her roles on Battlestar Galactica, Canadian teen soap opera Edgemont, and most recently Hawaii Five-0. Daniel and Grace, we admire your courage in taking a stand and we think you’re awesome! #BruceLeeMoment From Maria: “I felt, from the very first episode that Bruce Lee´s philosophy, he´s phrases and in general everything you discuss are very deep issues and least for me, it has taken time to digest, reflect, sink in and in time apply those ideas. I believe if I have had a Bruce Lee moment it has extended on time. I describe it as tiny lights lighting inside my brain, and for a moment I visualice their meaning briefly, then they disappear but leave a sort of indescribable trace of feeling.” Share your #AAHAs, #BruceLeeMoments, and #TakeAction progress with us at hello@brucelee.com Find the full version of our show notes at BruceLee.com/podcast

EARTH AID NOW! Radio speaks with Linsey McLean & Susan Henderson about Powertech/Azarga and why stopping the EPA from permitting uranium mining near Edgemont is imperative. As Talli Sauman, writing in Native Sun News, on April 19th relates, the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance and others are calling for people "to provide written comment by May 19, and for oral or written testimony at four hearings April 27 through May 11 on EPA draft permits that would allow uranium mining and waste disposal to take place in the underground water tables at the Dewey Burdock site in the southern Black Hills." "Headquartered in China, Azarga Uranium Corp., formerly Powertech Uranium Corp., wants an EPA underground injection permit for 4,000 wells in the Inyan Kara Group of aquifers, so it can conduct in situ leach (ISL) mining and milling of yellow cake on the 10,000-acre site it is leasing at the Cheyenne River headwaters 50 miles west of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation near Edgemont." "The company also wants EPA to grant it a deep underground disposal well permit, allowing the mine and mill to pump its wastewater through four wells into the Minnelusa Aquifer for final disposition at a depth of 2,800 feet." As Debra White Plume of Owe Aku Bring Back the Way says, "Our water has been contaminated by uranium mining for 30 years. It has spread its toxins and contaminants through our aquifers and waterways negatively impacting the people, animals, plants and birds who live in our territory.  Cancer, liver disease, diabetes and myriad health problems plague the Oglala Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in what amounts to environmental genocide."

Welcome to Celestial Sex, hosted by Chris Duce and produced by Colin Hatch. This week we forego our typical interview and review the seminary film Godly Sorrow starring Aaron Eckhart with non-LDS comedian Thomas Ouellette. Thomas is part of comedy team Icky Pep and sketch group Edgemont. Godly Sorrow is intended to teach the principle that there is a difference between worldly sorrow (social implications of sin) and godly sorrow (eternal implications of sin/the deep knowledge that you have offended God). It begins with a Bishop's interview, and, well, you should watch it for yourself. Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQYHVabpvQc This might only be half of the video!
