For years, I thought nutrition had to be all or nothing… you either perfectly tracked your food, followed a strict diet, or you were "failing." I spent so much time overthinking every meal, trying to find the “perfect” way to eat, only to end up feeling stressed, guilty, and frustrated.I thought true health meant rigid rules, obsessive tracking, and pushing myself to stick to the latest diet trend. But the truth? Nutrition should be about fueling your body, building strength, and creating habits that support your life, not controlling every bite.In today's episode, I'm answering your top nutrition questions: from intermittent fasting, to how to actually hit your protein goals, to healing your relationship with food in a way that feels empowering, not exhausting. If you've ever struggled with overcomplicating nutrition, feeling lost with protein targets, or rebuilding trust with your body, this episode is for you!I Also Discuss:(00:00) Nutrition Myths You Still Believe (and What Actually Works)(07:41) How Much Protein You REALLY Need (Without Going Crazy)(16:17) Healing Your Relationship With Food (Without Strict Diets)(18:07) Navigating Sobriety When Your Partner Still Drinks(24:47) Why Broads Is Different: Strength Over ScalThank You to Our Sponsors:Broads App – Get structured, progressive training and a powerhouse community to keep you strong, consistent, and unstoppable.
We brought so much gratitude to this amazing episode! The main topic was the news announced this weekend: David's Leadville 100 performance won the International Trail Performance of the Year. Yes, tears were shed. To everyone who listens, THANK YOU. In ways that go deeper than words...thank you. We reflect on the training, the journey, how our lives have changed, and what's ahead. Shooters shoot. Next it was a "No Secrets" Q+A! Topics: why hydration recommendations of "drinking to thirst" are often wrong in races and training, fitness apps, early AM training, when training volume hits a saturation point, what weekly volumes might lead to breakthroughs, how love evolves (or doesn't), recovery runs, AI and energy use, gel flavors, adaptations to long-term heat training, the number of workouts we suggest per week, our frustrations with running media, and Listener Corner. This community kept us going with love and belief through some dark forests this year. This is OUR award. It would not have been possible if it was just us chasing history. But when we have this team lifting us up? Well, we might just F around and make history. We love you all! Huzzah! As some of you will know – this year we created a second podcast channel called Business in Between. It's a channel that documents our journey as business owners – and where we also host long-form interviews with NZ's most interesting business leaders. And we're sharing one of our favourite interviews on the Business in Between channel – with you here on Between Two Beers. It's the story of how a Kiwi entrepreneur turned an idea for a fitness goal setting app into a global business with customers in over 150 countries and revenue exceeding $80 million a year. His name is Adam Al-Agez and his app is called The Conqueror. Adam started his fitness goal setting app in 2012 after 10 years of being an entrepreneur with limited success. The idea was relatively simple…instead of ‘just' going for a run, walk, a ride or swim, you're working towards a virtual fitness goal, immersed in community and with a tangible race medal delivered on completion. But after six years and hundreds of thousands of dollars, the app was floundering. All the signs were pointing to giving up all together and he even started getting his CV together and applying for jobs. Then in a bizarre series of events, in 2019 he ended up hiring a marketing wiz who lived in Romania, to run the digital marketing. Raul the Romanian immediately started growing sales and from an annual revenue of under $100k they grew to $2m in the first year. The next year they did $40m and $75m in the following two, having secured licensing agreements with the Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Harry Potter The business has now expanded globally with around 70 staff in 6 countries with customers in over 150 countries. Adam's story – and the growth of his company – is insane and the story will blow your mind - and it's the first time it's been told. Come for the storytelling and stay for Adam's brilliant business lessons at the end. This is an ep not to be missed. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tulsi Gabbard, Vivek Ramaswamy, JD Vance, Elon Musk. Eric Weinstein called them Trump's SuperTicket: his circle of former opponents who set aside their differences, unified under the same banner, and invited their followers to do the same. The strategy worked, winning votes of many who weren't typically MAGA – including fitness superstar Jillian Michaels, who says Trump wasn't her “first choice” but she ultimately voted for him “because I believe in this person so much: Tulsi [Gabbard].” Jillian Michaels is a fitness expert, entrepreneur, and media personality. If you are listening to this, there is a good chance you already know that strength is an important part of taking care of your body. So, when we see an App or YouTube-based workout plan that offers strength training, it can be easy to believe that this is the kind of content you should be following. But are you really getting a strength stimulus from your workout? Or is that just what is being marketed to you? Key Takeaways If You Want To Get Serious About Your Programming, You Should: Meet yourself where you are at without any shame or judgment Work to understand the nuance of strength training programming and what it really means Reach out to a coach who understands your goals and how you can reach them safely. Going Behind the Scenes with Nikki Naab-Levy Nikki Naab-Levy is a strength and nutrition coach who has been involved in multiple arenas in the fitness industry for the last 17 years. She helps women move, build strength, improve mobility, move beyond injury, and find a sustainable approach to nutrition. She is passionate about having the unscripted and messy conversations necessary to help women get stronger and call attention to the problematic marketing in the world of fitness and beyond. Understanding the Nuance When using your favorite fitness apps, how do you know that the workouts you are doing are actually focusing on strength? Or if they are the right movements to be doing for your lived experience and goals? The truth is, you don't. That's why you need to understand the nuance behind the programming so that you can go out into the world and be able to look at your apps from an informed place of strength development. Picking apart the way things are marketed can help you differentiate between what you are actually getting and can help you pick a program that is effective for your specific goals. It's Not You, It's Your Workout Choosing workouts that are not right for you can make you feel chronically injured, sore, tired, or fed up with not seeing any improvements. This doesn't mean you aren't doing it right; it means the training you are doing isn't right for you. The difference between randomly working out and training means that you can acknowledge your weak factors, understand your lived experience, and engage with a program that gives you the runway for the best possible entry point to your goals. While it is not impossible to achieve these things with an app, it is increasingly risky and tricky to see long-term changes without a program built for you. How do you interact with fitness apps on a regular basis? Share your thoughts and experiences with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Understanding the difference between strength training programs and other types of workouts like circuit training (11:54) Analyzing the selection of programming available on many apps (31:22) How to create a long-term plan that goes beyond the short-term offers out there (43:45) The importance of repetition and practice when it comes to a successful training program (49:54) Why you can't put the cart before the horse when it comes to jumping into a program (1:04:12) Quotes “We are not hating on the workouts.
