Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Before he was “Singin’ Sam,” Harry Frankel performed in blackface, an unfortunate part of his life as an entertainer and one I hope he would regret. Fortunately for us, he took on the persona of “Singin’ Sam” and you’ll hear three of his recordings as “Singin’ Sam” in the first segment of this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records. Irene Beasley and Clayton McMichen will also have birthday segments on the show. We’ll also enjoy some delicious soup and tell you all about the Dunning-Kruger Effect. There's lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Just click the link above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience. THANKS FOR LISTENING! ENJOY THE SHOW! Franklyn Frank, Amsterdam News.

In a pair of old photos outside the Academy's Library of the class of 1918, there are two black students – composer and multi-instrumentalist Edmund T Jenkins and mezzo-soprano Evelyn Dove. In this episode, Anna Picard explores who they were, how they both forged successful careers and what their stories tell us about ‘high' and ‘low' art at that moment in history. We bring Edmund and Evelyn's worlds to life with rare recordings of their music, and we hear from Edmund's great-nephew, who is keeping his music alive for a new generation. George Formby- When I'm cleaning windows, Oi- Flanagan and Allen, actually that turns into Underneath the arches. Their most famous song. Roy Fox, vocals Buddy Clark The treasure of Sierra Madre. This is the theme song from the Humprey Bogart film. Bob Crosby and Marion Mann with Never knew Heaven could speak and Speak to me of love. Jimmie Rodgers- Everyone's doing it in Hawaii and Frankie and Johnny. The magnicent Sophie Tucker with Life begins at forty and Nellie Lutcher with Hurry on down. Both delightfully naughty. Jack Hylton, Hoagy Carmichael, George Wettling, Hutch and Italian Samba from Tino Vailati. Johnny Duncan with The last train to San fernado. We finish with a uncharacteristically slow and moody number from Mugsy Spanier- Lonesome Road. One of my favourites from the 100s of records I've played on Forgotten Songs.

Dennis Potter's seminal TV 1978 drama was choc full of great music and songs from the 1930s, largely from British dance bands and orchestras. Bob Hoskins, Cheryl Campbell and Gemma Craven starred and did a great job of lip syncing to the likes of Al Bowlly, Roy Fox , Lew Stone, Bert Ambrose, Arthur Tracey, Maurice Winnick, Jack Paine, Jack Hylton, Billy Cotton and Henry Hall. They all feature in this episode, as does George Hall, with Roll along Prairie Moon and Flannigan and Allen with Shine on harvest moon. Other songs are Goodnight Vienna, We'll all go riding on a rainbow, Wednesday night hop, Stage coach, Man of my dreams, Home of the range, The waltz you saved for me, In the valley of the moon, Night and day, Life is empty without love, My Wild Oat, Its only a paper moon, Moon over Miami and You rascal you.

My guest for this Halloween episode is author Keith Linder, who joined me to talk about the unsettling events he experienced for four years whilst living in a house in Bothell, a suburb of Seattle WA. These happenings started as soon as he and his partner moved in in 2012, and include almost everything you can imagine happening in a haunting, or poltergeist case. Unusually though, their house was not on old structure, or a building marked by a gruesome history. Still, what has happened within its walls has been terrifying enough for it to become known as the Bothell Hell House, and be visited by numerous paranormal investigators. It is a truly fascinating case of what it is like to experience malevolent paranormal activity first hand. Enjoy.. For more information on Keith's experiences at the house and his books, please visit https://demonsinseattle.com/. You can now also donate to Some Other Sphere via Ko-fi. To buy the podcast a coffee, please visit https://ko-fi.com/someotherspherepodcast. Thank you! The Some Other Sphere theme music is from Purple Planet Music - 'Hubbub', by Geoff Harvey/Chris Martyn. The track playing out this episode is 'Bogey Wail' by Jack Hylton and his Orchestra.

Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Enjoy the show! Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Do you know who this fellow is? Well, this being July 3, even if you didn’t recognize him, you may have figured out that it’s John Philip Sousa, “The March King.” And in preparation for tomorrow’s Independence Day holiday, in the final segment of this week’s show, we’ll hear three of his patriotic marches. We’ll also celebrate the birthdays of Jack Hylton and Richard Rodgers. In other segments, we’ll half-fill a request and say good-bye to a friend. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be magically transported to an earlier–and we think better–musical era. Just click on the player above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience. Enjoy the show! Here’s the complete playlist: Segment 1: Where Are You GoingOne of our long-time regular participants of Ian Whitcomb's Monday evening Salons is Gloria. Sadly for us she will not be there on Monday nights any more because she's moving in order to help care for her mother who will be turning 90 this month. So here's a set of rapidly rotating records dedicated to Gloria. See if you can figure out to where she's moving. But to at least partially fulfill Alvin's request, Banking on the Weather – Russ Carlson's High Steppers Cheatin' on Me – The Varsity Eight Banking on the Weather – Bertini and His Band / Tom Barratt Segment 3: Jack HyltonJuly 2 marked the birth in 1892 in Lancashire, England, of bandleader Jack Hylton. Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Now most of the bands and orchestras that we play on this show have decidedly unimaginative names, generally, the leader's name, and His Orchestra or and His Band. For example, Roger Wolfe Kahn and His Orchestra, Jack Hylton and His Orchestra. Fine bands. Dull names. So, for this edition of the show, I've gone through to try to find records made by bands with more creative or unusual names. Enjoy the show!
