Somewhere around the mid-1970s, Hollywood studios realized that the summer months were the perfect launching point for their most-expensive, highest-profile projects. With kids out of school, families needed something to do. The prestigious Oscar-bait timeframe was half a year away. And people welcomed an opportunity to get out of the sun and into a dark, air-conditioned room to watch grown men get eaten by dinosaurs whilst using the toilet, and countless cars exploding for no discernible reason. Billions of dollars have been made by summer blockbusters, and even a few awards have ben won by them. So for the first of our 2025 Summer Specials, we want to look back at those mega-grossing pictures and try to determine the best Summer Blockbuster Film of all time. Movies discussed: Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Ghostbusters, Grease, Shrek, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Twister, Barbie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Independence Day, Iron Man, Back to the Future. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Karissa Kloss, Kate Racculia, and Michael Schwarz as they discuss 16 of the most-loved, most-successful movies of all time. Play along at home by finding the listener bracket here. Make a copy for yourself, fill it out, and see if your picks match up with ours! For an extended version of this episode, featuring 20 more minutes of movie discussion, as well as the warm-up in which we discuss even more summer blockbusters that didn't make the bracket, become a Patreon supporter of the podcast today. Ep. 332: Amy Taubin on Cloud, Tribeca (I Was Born This Way, Happy Birthday, Shadow Scholars), Twin Peaks, Outrageous, plus Mountainhead Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. The summer may have technically begun, but it's not truly the summer without our annual June-July-ish kick-off: a podcast with critic Amy Taubin! Once again she brings a selection of highlights gleaned from the Tribeca, including prize-winners and otherwise: I Was Born This Way (directed by Daniel Junge and Sam Pollard), Natchez (Suzannah Herbert), The Shadow Scholars (Eloise King), Cuerpo Celeste (Nayra Ilic García), Happy Birthday (Sarah Goher), and the delightful Lion King doc Runa Simi (Augusto Zegarra), with my chiming in about The Scout (Paula González-Nasser). But wait, that's not all: Amy also talks about Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cloud (coming to U.S. theaters on July 18); her recent work on Twin Peaks, with a remarkable personal connection to David Lynch's work; and Outrageous, the very resonant TV series about the Mitford sisters. Plus: I ramble a bit about the latest movies from Celine Song, Materialists, and from Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later, as well as Jeremy Strong's feature-film directorial debut, the tech-bro-apocalypse satire Mountainhead. Today Ben dives into the Viking World of Berk to discuss the Live Action How to Train Your Dragon! Live-action remakes don't exactly have the best track record—some hit, most miss, and many leave us wondering… why even bother? But somehow, How to Train Your Dragon pulls off the near-impossible: staying almost exactly the same as the original and being completely worth it. In today's video, we're breaking down why this remake works where others—like The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast—struggled. From honoring the animation, to understanding live-action as its own format, to the return of Gerard Butler in bear cape glory... this movie might've just set a new standard. In today's episode, I talk about a new rule of the Asylum, which is being the King or Queen of the Jungle. This is inspired by The Lion King musical, which has a classic hero story. In terms of guitar playing, every guitarist goes through this journey. In the episode, I talk about how guitar playing can take us to a different dimension, the transformation we undergo as guitarists, and how beneficial this can be. I describe the hero's journey for those who aren't familiar with, how to not let doubt creep in, and how to take the next step on your journey. Take a listen and enjoy! It's Part 1 with the one and only Crystal Kung Minkoff for a glitzy, gloriously unfiltered episode! Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, Humble Brag podcast queen, and wife of The Lion King director Rob Minkoff, Crystal joins Pol' & Patrik to spill tea—unsweetened, over-iced, and stirred with Armenian coffee. With Snow White 90210 at the groomer (priorities, people), the boys dive into Crystal's Housewives origin story: a casual Mommy & Me moment with Teddi Mellencamp turned into a Zoom with 20 Bravo execs. In designer athleisure, she was crowned a new Housewife. Her reaction? “Uh…okay?” Even the Bravo head honcho was gagged. Crystal didn't chase fame—she married into it. With over 20 years alongside Rob, she had a lot to lose. Between raising kids and protecting her husband's Disney reputation, she wasn't about to get shredded by Lisa Rinna for sport. Even Rob's agent (who reps Brandi Glanville and Denise Richards) told her: “Don't do it!” But Bravo got her. Zoom filming turned into sipping with Kyle Richards, dodging Erika Jayne-level drama, and saying “hell no” to shady producer setups. As for the cast? Crystal's real ones were Garcelle Beauvais and Sutton Stracke—until the group chat imploded. (Looking at you, Random
Well, well. It took a while but another major studio is now in the business of remaking animated classics. How to Train Your Dragon has meant a lot to me since I was a kid. The first film is near perfect, the second is an amazing follow up, and the third is a flawed but incredibly satisfying and deeply emotional farewell to Hiccup & Toothless. I've been lucky that Disney hasn't really been going after my childhood favorites, with the exception of The Lion King, to remake but now Universal and DreamWorks has dipped into my well of favorites. What piqued my curiosity very early on in the process of this film's development was that Dean DeBlois, director of all three of the animated films, was returning to tackle the live-action film, which was certainly a surprise. That being said, I have loved almost all the casting for this film and the trailers have certainly given me the nostalgic feels... but if you've listened to any of the episodes where I've discussed this film, you'll probably know that there has been one lingering question in my head: why? Why remake one of the only films that truly spawned a new franchise of the current generation. It seemed far too son, even for the nostalgic effect to be felt to its maximum. But of course, I went in hopeful and optimistic that Dean DeBlois could recapture the magic of the animated entries. Was he able to? What if the ache you feel—the need to prove yourself, the fear of rejection, the constant striving—isn't just emotional… but spiritual? In this powerful Father's Day message, Pastor Clint explores the deep and often hidden impact of the orphan spirit—a condition that begins when we lose connection with God as Father. “Your story comes from your heart, and then you structure it to deliver it in the best way.” — Rain BennettEver hear the term "story beat" and wonder what it really means? In this episode, Rain breaks down the mysterious middle ground between scenes and acts—the story beat. And he uses Blake Snyder's popular (and sometimes polarizing) Save the Cat beat sheet to do it.You'll get a clear explanation of what a beat is, how the 15-beat structure works, and why it's helped thousands of storytellers—from screenwriters to brand strategists—craft more compelling narratives. Rain walks you through the full beat sheet, explains how it maps to The Lion King, and shares tips on how to use this structure for your own business, brand, or film storytelling. If you've been overwhelmed by big frameworks, this episode will give you a clear, practical tool to work with.In this episode, you will learn to:Define what a story beat is and understand how it fits between scenes and acts.Use Blake Snyder's 15-beat sheet to outline or revise your story with more clarity.Apply structural thinking without becoming rigid or formulaic.Break down familiar films like The Lion King to see how classic stories follow this shape.Build emotional momentum in your stories by anchoring each beat to character decisions. 032 - Lilo & Stitch (2025), Dir. Dean Fleischer Camp Lilo & Stitch is beloved by a whole generation. It came at the end of an era for Disney- one of the stronger ones they've had. This live action remake, like The Lion King (2019), is a very similar movie that fails to catch the magic of the original. Stitch is great, though, and absolutely worth the price of admission and the reason this film was made. 0:00:00 - Introductions and Banter 0:10:00 - Box Office 0:13:50 - Trailers - Happy Gilmore 2, Netflix 0:24:50 - Movie Recommendation- Lilo & Stitch (2002), Dir. It's our 200th episode! We start with a note of gratitude and a show announcement. If you grew up in an American public school, you likely really loved or really hated your school lunches. Here's the surprising tale of how schools came to provide lunch for students. Some 1990s era video games for Super Nintendo were notoriously challenging. One of the most difficult was the Lion King - but it was done on purpose and for a unusually specific reason.Sources:https://www.cbr.com/lion-king-brutally-difficult-platformer/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/american-schools-have-been-feeding-children-for-more-than-100-years-heres-how-the-school-lunch-has-changed-180986583/http://www.commutethepodcast.comFollow Commute:Instagram - instagram.com/commutethepodcast/Twitter - @PodcastCommuteFacebook - facebook.com/commutethepodcast
