Welcome to another edition of Scheer Intelligence, where insights come alive through the voices of our guests. I'm your host, Robert Scheer, and today we have the privilege of speaking with the insightful Vijay Prashad, a prolific author and the Director of the Tri-Continental Institute for Social Research. With an impressive body of work that includes over 40 books, Prashad has established himself as a leading voice on global affairs. In our conversation, we explore the complexities of international relations, particularly focusing on the rising influence of China, the dynamics of capitalism, and the implications of a multipolar world on the global economy. We discuss critical issues, from technological advancements to the evolving nature of democracy, and reflect on the historical context that shapes today's geopolitical landscape.Join us as we unravel the narratives behind global events and seek to understand the balance of power in a world that's rapidly changing.
In this episode of Dispatches, Rania Khalek is joined by author, historian, and journalist Vijay Prashad to discuss how the West's increasing reliance on violent repression, from Gaza to Cuba, signals not strength, but desperation. Prashad dissects the moral collapse of Western imperialism and the challenges facing the Global South as they navigate an era of “hyperimperial” aggression.
“This is not just an Israeli genocide - this is an Israeli, European and US genocide!” Vijay Prashad exposes the moral decline of the global north in the age of hyper-Imperialism and its continued war against “defiance” found in the global south. In a recent report published by Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research titled Hyper-Imperialism: A Dangerous Decadent New Stage, Prashad argues the global north has heightened its reliance upon force to insist on obedience. As President-Elect Trump continues to nominate cabinet picks who counter his campaign promises of a peace agenda, we revisit this hour our discussion with author, historian, and journalist Vijay Prashad. In this our first broadcast of the full interview, Prashad explains why terms such as fascism may be in vogue to describe the incoming 47th presidency, but policies, especially foreign policies, may be identical to those of the current and past administrations. Amrita Ghosh and Bhakti Shringarpure reflect on the entwined histories of India and Palestine as the world is witness to extraordinary levels of violence being inflicted on people in Gaza by an Israel backed by the US and other global superpowers. What does Palestine mean for India today when the official governmental affiliation seems to be with the state of Israel yet there is a collective memory of solidarities and friendship with Palestine? Historian and activist Vijay Prashad joins the conversation to offer a concise and inspiring history of India as an ally of Palestine going as far back as the 1930s when Mahatma Gandhi wrote about the fact that there was indeed an ongoing attempt to colonise the lands of Palestine. Prashad speaks about the heyday of the friendship during the time of Indira Gandhi, when leader Yasser Arafat visited India frequently, right until the end of the Cold War when there came about a turning point. The episode also ponders whether Palestine offers a framework to understand the struggles in Kashmir. Finally, in commenting on the charming, lone pro-Palestinian protester who ran out onto the field during the cricket world cup, Prashad concludes that billions of people are absolutely pissed off at the grotesque level of violence being perpetrated by Israel and the outrage can no longer be contained.
In the launch of our fifth season, we are pleased to welcome back author, public intellectual and director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Vijay Prashad. Taking us through the recent economic summits of BRICS and the G20, as well as the cascade coups in West Africa, Prashad delves into the rapid and stunning changes taking place in the world today, where they came from and what this could mean for a changing world order. Is it multipolarity or is it something else? In speaking of the origins of the BRICS bloc of economically emerging nations, Prashad says: “You know, it's interesting because it's almost as if people in the West were blindsided by the appearance of this thing called BRICS and recently, of course, the term Global South … there's a straight line between the anti-colonial struggles of the 19th century and these developments now … And so the BRICS isn't some invention of the Goldman Sachs economists. It didn't come out of nowhere. It's part of a long history by these countries to fight for economic sovereignty, political democracy on the world stage in one sense or the other, and then some kind of economic parity.” Prashad also reflects on the history of coups in the Global South and those now taking place in West Africa: “In many parts of the Third World, especially during the period of the debt crisis and subsequent to that. .. there was a sense that nothing is going to change. You know, people resigned themselves to a kind of futility ...There is a sense of resignation to decay. We are not going to be able to develop. We're not going to be able to advance ... These coups, two of them in Mali, two of them in Burkina Faso, one in Niger, one in Gabon, these coups ... represent the frustration of their populations. And that's a reality. That's hard to take away. And that's why millions of people across the Sahel have been coming out to defend these coups.” Tune in to my conversation with Vijay Prashed on summits, coups and an empowered Global South that says, “we are not afraid of the West anymore.” About today's guest: Director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Vijay Prashad is an historian, journalist, researcher, activist and a prolific writer. We interview journalist, historian, and Marxist intellectual Vijay Prashad. We discuss the myth of the third world as a site of poverty and degradation instead of the global anti-colonial movement it once was. To gain a better understanding of the history and how it became co-opted we analyze Prashad's book "The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World." Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.09.527923v1?rss=1 Authors: Paek, A. Y., Prashad, S. Abstract: Brain Machine Interfaces (BMIs) are systems that can help restore motor function to individuals with paralysis. These systems utilize machine learning algorithms to detect how the user wants to control an assistive device from their brain activity. These algorithms require a training dataset to infer patterns between a user's brain waves and the control signal for the assistive device. These training datasets consist of brain activity recordings while participants perform a very repetitive motor task. We hypothesize that these training datasets can be compromised due to the high number of trials. We anticipate that the movement-related brain waves of interest attenuate over time due to neural efficiency, where the brain becomes more efficient with practice in a motor task. To explore this hypothesis, we used an open-access EEG dataset where participants performed a simple reach-and-lift task. From each trial, time windows associated with resting and movement periods were segmented. Alpha and beta-band spectral power was estimated for each of these epochs and event-related desynchronization (ERD) was estimated as the suppression in spectral power from rest to movement. These ERDs were compared between early and late trials in the dataset. We also used linear discriminant analysis to assess a machine learning algorithm's accuracy in classifying whether the time windows belonged to rest or movement based on the spectral power band. We found that earlier trials had stronger ERDs and larger classification accuracies, suggesting that the repetition in the motor task causes attenuation of movement-related brain wave patterns and reduces efficacy of the dataset. These results call for a reevaluation of BMI performance in datasets that have numerous trials and an exploration of strategies that can compensate for longitudinal changes in movement-related brain activity used for BMIs. On this edition of Free City Radio we hear from Vijay Prashad and Frank Barat @frank-barat co-authors of the book "The Struggle Makes Us Human," which visits points of connection between social movements around the world. https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1869-struggle-makes-us-human The book is described this way: "An incisive and inspiring call to look beyond capitalism to chart a road map for a planet ravaged by pandemics, climate crisis, and wars. Prompted by trenchant questions by international solidarity organizer Frank Barat, renowned author and activist Vijay Prashad shows that the path toward hope and liberation lies in looking closely at myriad, under covered struggles being waged all across the world by workers in countries such as India, Kenya, Peru, Tunisia, and Argentina. A marvellously global but grassroots perspective. Prashad also examines pressing topics such as debt cancellation, a wealth tax, austerity, the pandemic, the arms industry, the climate crisis, socialism, working-class social movements and much more." Vijay Prashad is a leading historian on the Global South and U.S. empire. His books include Washington Bullets, The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World and most recently The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power, which features Prashad in dialogue with Noam Chomsky. Today, he joins editor in chief Nathan J. Robinson for a spirited conversation on U.S. foreign policy. The discussion covers, among other things:Why the U.S. left has an obligation to pay attention to the way U.S. power operates abroadThe total lack of any accountability for the criminal wars waged by the U.S. and our lack of interest in applying the legal standards of the Nuremberg tribunals to ourselvesHow every rival power is always characterized as monstrous, bent on world domination, and impossible to reason withWhy the term "American empire" is useful and how American imperialism is similar to and different from other kinds of imperialismHow the U.S. operates internationally like a mafia godfather—and why the comparison might actually be unfair to the Mafia, who are more inclined toward diplomatic solutions"No country in the world has through its wars killed the number of people that the United States has killed in the last 35 odd years. And yet in the U.S. you sound insane to say: Why didn't we have Donald Rumsfeld give testimony at the ICC? Or why not ask George W. Bush to at least stand up and stop painting his ridiculous paintings and reflect a little on having conducted that war? There's just no space in public discourse for that kind of thing. In Nuremberg, there was the death penalty for a war of aggression. But the poison pen of Nuremberg is for others. It's not for the United States. I think that's the responsibility of intellectuals is to not allow amnesia to set in around these really quite consequential issues—consequential not only for the Iraqis, I must say, but also for the U.S. veterans who continue to be haunted by that war." — Vijay Prashad An article on the Clintons and Haiti can be found here. The Robinson/Chomsky article on China is here and the one on Afghanistan is here.
Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad, two of the left's most brilliant critics of US empire, sit down with Jacobin Show's Ariella Thornhill to discuss their new book The Withdrawal. To Chomsky and Prashad, US global power acts much the same way a Godfather rules over a Mafia family, imposing its interests on all who stand in its way domestically or internationally. The wide-ranging discussion touches on American exceptionalism, Military Keynesianism, the roadblocks for a new Iran Nuclear Deal, and the implications of Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan. We are also joined by Ben Fong to discuss how Big Pharma is licking its chops at the prospects of psychedelic legalization next year, and Jen and Cale try to make sense of the Gen-Z trend of quiet quitting at work. The Jacobin Show is a weekly YouTube show offering socialist perspectives on class and capitalism in the twenty-first century, the failures of liberalism, and the prospects of rebuilding a left labor movement in the US. In the fifth episode, historian, researcher, celebrated writer and executive director of Tri-Continental Institute for Social Research, Vijay Prashad discusses the standard of double standards that have long plagued the relationship between the power-holding centres of the Global North and the world's majority of the Global South. Vijay Prashad describes the Tri-Continental Institute for Social Research as: “associated with this project of internationalism. And our agenda as a research institute is essentially to amplify the voices of movements. To bridge the gap between movements and intellectual activity and to create a kind of intellectualism that develops its confidence, its clarity from the lessons learnt by people in struggle. .. We see ourselves rooted in a very long tradition that goes back to early scholarship in the 19th century ... Dadabhai Naoroji who in the 19th century contested British colonial claims about a mission civilization in Britain ... We see ourselves in the tradition of the Pan-African scholars; people of course like WEB DuBois, later Walter Rodney, CLR James, and so on. People who tried to make the argument very strongly about not only how the histories of parts of the world were set aside, not only that; but even the kind of values that begin to dominate in the stories we tell ourselves. Values that essentially shaped the world through the eyes of the West.” In speaking of the Global North's attitude toward the Global South amid converging crises, Prashad says, “To my mind, the callous attitude towards the pandemic is equivalent to the callous attitude towards arms-sales is equivalent to the callous attitude to climate change is equivalent to the callous attitude towards austerity. It's all one and the same. And it comes from this sense of superiority and this sense of being somehow immune from the challenges of the world.” About today's guest: Executive Director of Tri-Continental Institute for Social Research, Vijay Prashad is an historian, journalist, researcher, activist,, and a prolific writer. UnBreakable Spirit, Inspiring Stories of Women Surviving and Thriving
In Episode 19 of Unbreakable Spirit, Julie Prashad-Ramirez shares her story of losing her mother to glioblastoma (brain cancer). Her Mom's diagnosis came shortly after the birth of Julie's first daughter. At a time when Julie and her Mom should have been enjoying the new baby, instead, this diagnosis turned their world upside down. Her Mom passed away just a year later. Her Dad was left to raise her 10 year old brother alone. Devastatingly, just a few short years later, her Dad unexpectedly dies from a heart attack. Julie, as the oldest daughter, is left with all the responsibilities. She steps in to plan the funeral, and manage her Dad's estate and to care for her brother. There was so much to do and she had no clue where to begin. She had to use her own funds to plan the funeral and pay attorneys until the estate could be settled and there were many complicated issues regarding the estate. There was much to do. She and her husband filed for guardianship of her brother. Now with two little girls and a teenage brother living with her, Julie was overwhelmed and depressed. She was deeply grieving the loss of both parents in such a short time, but there was also an anger and resentment that she was left with this burden of figuring out her Dad's estate and almost losing everything trying to help. It placed a burden on her marriage as well. Bad things weren't supposed to happen to good people. Julie found her way to healing through medication to help lift her out of the depression and through becoming more spiritually connected through her church. She now dedicates her life to helping others with all aspects of their finances including the importance of life insurance and advises on why estate planning is so important so that no one will have to go through what she had to. This week's Eid episode is a double feature! In the first half of this episode, Nashwa sits down with Priya Prabhakar to discuss the ongoing Farmers' protests in India that began in November 2020. In June of 2020, three ordinances were introduced and eventually passed as acts by Modi and his right-wing government. These bills translate into the mass deregulation and neo-liberalization of the agricultural market. Farmers continue to protest these three farm acts that were subsequently passed by the Indian government in September 2020. The protests are largely set in Delhi. We hope this episode helps people understand the larger context and the righteousness of farmer anger right now. The farmers' protests are critical and we hope this episode provides a nuanced and accessible explainer on why these protests matter and what is happening in India. In India, neither farmer protests nor farmer suicides are uncommon and have been occurring for decades. The first half of this episode was recorded shortly before India became the epicenter of the COVID pandemic. The second half of this episode highlights how the devastating pandemic has also interacted with the strikes. In the second half of this episode, Priya and Nashwa sit down with Vijay Prashad to discuss how COVID is ravaging India, as well as how the Modi government has been failing the Indian people. Some highlights of this episode include Vijay's insights on vaccine apartheid and America allegedly withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. #PearlsOfWisdoms #BabaIqbalSinghJi What is the importance of Karah Prashad as per Gurmat and does it make any impcat on the condition of mind when you have Karah Prashad? When we bake the "Karah Prashad" then the five 'Baani" are recited. The way to bake the "Karha Prashad" of the old times is that while baking the "Karha Prashad" the man recite the "Baani" and the 'Baani' and the 'baani' enters the 'karha Prashad'. The "Baani" enters inside then it no longer remains a common eatable or like other sweet eatables being sold at the shop. In that when the 'Baani' enters inside. What is the interntion? It is that to keep the Prashad in front of the Guru Sahib, because its importance has increased. And while baking it, we just need to continue reciting the 'Baani' So that the 'Baani' enters the 'Karha Prashad" and it becomes holy. Then we keep it in the presence of the lord. We believe that it is the 'Prashad' of the Lord. This 'Karha Prashad' is not from a shopkepper's shop. No one has made it. At that time we need to understand that "O, Lord this is your'Prashad' and if we take it as he 'Prashad' of the lord then onl we will feel love of the Almighty and the love will increase. Firstly we recite the name and 'Baani'. Secondly we believe that Guru Sahib has offered me this 'Prashad' Have it as the 'Prashad' of the Guru, that will make you more close to him. 'Karha Prashad' is the 'Prashad' of the Guru. We should accept it as a 'Prashad'. We should not take it as our taste. Whether it sweet and delicious. That's why we like it. Then it would not be 'Prashad' anymore. When we get 'Prashad' we should understand that we are getting the blessings of the Guru. How much we get, we should accept it with love and slowly eat and side by side recite the name 'Waheguru' and make sure it does not fell on the floor. And you should not behave like that, the 'Prashad' is delicious, give me more. Then it does not remain 'Prashad' anymore it becomes a delicious eatable. And if we accept it wih love that Guru Sahib, that is your 'Prashad'. This is a blessing given by you. I shall accept this blessings with love inside me. So that Lust, Anger, Greed, Attachment and Ego, the five thieves inside us should run away. If he eats the 'Prashad' with this thinking, then only will he have the blessings of the Lord. And if he accepts it with the taste, then there may be no difference between the 'halwa' in the shop and the 'Parshad'. This is the stage of mind. We have to accept the 'Prashad' as of the Guru. The five 'Baanis' have entered that when the man prepare the 'Prashad' he recites the 'Baani'. He recites either Japji Sahib or any other Baani So, it enters inside. So, the 'Prashad' of the Guru is not like an Ordinary 'halwa' like the ones prepare at the shops. This is the 'Prashad' of the Guru. The Baani has settled inside it, and the Guru is present in it. When we keep it in front of Guru Granth Sahib ji and the love and kindness originates when we eat it in front of the Guru. We get blessings of the Lord. And we join with him. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/babaiqbalsinghji/support

Achieving social justice is going to take much more than reforming our criminal justice system. Valuing all lives equally is going to require a profound reckoning with every system of “othering” that lies at the heart of our economy. “You can't deal, for example, with capitalism unless you deal with patriarchy, “ says political historian Vijay Prashad. The question of women's unrecognized labor, care labor and so on is central to the reproduction of the system, says Prashad. Executive Director of the Tri-continental Institute for Social Research, Vijay Prashad talked with Laura for “The Economics of Abolition” episode of the Laura Flanders Show. Here, we present more of that conversation, uncut. The Tri-continental Institute for Social Research is a movement-driven institution focused on building peace and justice through provoking intellectual debate. In today's episode, Che introduces the Let's Talk Listeners to an extraordinary guest, Founder & CEO of The Origin Group of Companies Neil Prashad and gold member sponsor of Let's Talk. Origin is a global industry leader in providing homes, products and programs for seniors. He took the word "retirement" out of Origin's name in 2008 to signal his absolute commitment to embracing the benefits of active living and environmental design for ageing in place. For the last three decades, Neil has built communities not only for mature humans but for the Care workers. He believes that this critical turning point to bringing attention and changing how Caregivers are treated, as they are the retirement industry's backbone. He grew up with a mom who was a nurse, and he saw how hard she worked and that knowledge has inspired the Origin philosophy of looking after the humans that look after our elders through this pandemic and into the future. Confira a entrevista completa no podcast.

We recently had a very inspiring chat with a man of multitudinous talents - Mr. Andrew Prashad! In this episode, Andrew talks about how he's been keeping his beautiful perspective amidst the trials of Covid time (especially while juggling 3 kids!). We also ask after his gorgeous son, 5-year-old Ezra (who has struggled with Spina Bifida since birth), and how Andrew has kept so positive with the ups and downs of Ezra's ongoing health challenges. We also get the chance to ask Andrew about the frank and compassionate video he recently released about white privilege, and how he maintains his equilibrium while coming up against it. Andrew generously shares with us how leading by example, with love and kindness, is the best strategy for creating a more loving world.
Vijay Prashad is a journalist, commentator and executive-director of the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research. He is also the Chief Editor at LeftWord Books. Dr. Dady Chery, associate professor of biology, co-editor-in-chief of News Junkie Post and author of "We Have Dared to Be Free" takes the controversial perspective, with respective push back, that vaccine testing could be an undiscussed proponent in the resurgence of covid 19 in the multitude of states experiencing peaking numbers over the past several days as opposed to an organic expansion of the virus resulting from the early openings of the economies of those states. Dr. Cheri argues the virus is now better understood than it was when it first occurred and is not as severe as was originally believed, making the opening of the economy a reasonable action. Bob and Jamarl discussed the Rayshard Brooks shooting by cops in Atlanta, Georgia and the swift action taken by the state to appease an already on edge community. Within 24 hours of the shooting, the cop involved was fired and the police chief was one of the 40 million out of a job. Strangely enough, the most interesting part wasn’t the cop killing, that is unconscionably normal (cops kill 1000 a year, 99% result in no charges) - it was the city’s reaction given material circumstance associated with the shooting.Vijay Prashad, historian, journalist and executive director of the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research brilliantly explains how the US Government, despite not responding rationally to the phenomenal crisis to which this country finds itself, it is legitimately concerned with the protest taking on larger and broader concerns considering 40 million people are out of a job, tens of millions will be evicted from their homes, and millions are already on the streets. Prashad drilled into the inability of both parties to address the vocal concerns of the population, instead preferring performative politics and theatrics over honestly regarding the public’s indignation. For example, Mayor of Washington DC Muriel Bowse trolling Trump by painting “Black Lives Matter”in large letters on the street in front of the White House, while simultaneously increasing the police department’s budgets. Misfit hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas also discussed the rather surprising win for common sense and good conscience. A conservative Surpreme Court has ruled that Civil Rights laws must also protect the worker's rights of people that classify themselves as lesbians, gay, and transgender.
In this episode we interview Vijay Prashad. Prashad is an Indian historian and journalist. He is also the author of thirty books, including Washington Bullets, Red Star Over the Third World, The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World and The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South. He is the Chief Correspondent for Globetrotter and a Columnist for Frontline (India). He is the Chief Editor of LeftWord Books (New Delhi). We speak to Prashad mainly about his recent work over at the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, where he serves as the Director. We discuss the concept of CoronaShock and the responses of capitalistic states and socialistic states to the virus. Prashad also discusses racist and anti-communist depictions of China in the western media. We discuss the demands that Tricontinental and the International People’s Assembly have compiled, including demands around universal basic income, the cancellation of debt, the suspension of the dollar as an international currency, an end to housing payments and a guarantee of housing as a human right among others. Prolific author, historian and executive director of the Tri-Continental Institute, Dr. Vijay Prashad, told the Misfits that the 20 percent unemployment rate the US has just hit and probably exceeded is nothing compared to what we should expect under the conditions of “The Great Lockdown.” Neither main party in the richest country in the world seems to recognize that they’re facing a humanitarian crisis. Prashad offered a vision of a humane response in the US and explained where governments are actually stepping up to the job, including in the Indian state of Kerala. The three break down the ruling ideas of our age, the coming surge in platform capitalism, and what our neighborhoods will look like in the future.Dr. Bill Honigman, Progressive Democrats of America national outreach lead and co-coordinator of the Healthcare as a Human Right Issue Organizing Team for Progressive Democrats of America, explained the intersection of senior care, race, housing and poverty at the heart of the covid-19 explosion in the US. He updated Misfit hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas on the results of some organizing efforts by nurses in California and provided some insight into the conditions of California emergency rooms, how budget cuts impact sanitation and health care, and why nurses and hospital staff need labor protections as much as other workers. They explored the historic disdain this country has for nurses and other workers and the opportunity the pandemic offers, by focusing attention on their important work and their shabby treatment, to recognize our other economic crimes. The Misfits also covered grim warnings from the World Food Program about widespread famine, the latest major storms to rip across the US, the puppet masters behind some protests against social distancing lockdowns, the future of American health care, and the DNC’s plans to hold an in-person primary, come hell or high fevers.

We speak with Vijay Prashad, who provides insightful analysis of the situation in Syria and the aerial bombing of Damascus by the US. The US' claims, which were used to justify the bombing, of attacking Syrian chemical weapons facilities make little sense. If the US knew of such facilities, the information should have been provided to the UN so they could be inspected. Prashad finds it strange that the US attacked Damascus while chemical weapons investigators were in Syria and had not yet completed their investigation of the alleged chemical attack. The attack did not change the balance of power. Syria continues to regain control of its territory and the rebels, along with their allies, i.e. the US, UK and France, have been routed. These and other issues around the Syrian war are discussed and Prashad also examines the impact of US actions on conflicts with North Korea and Iran. Show Notes for Podcast Five of Sex & Why Host: Jeannette Wolfe Topic: Stress Response This Podcast focuses on the basics of the acute human stress response. Please see Dr Morgenstern's excellent write up: Performance Under Pressure Review: https://first10em.com/2017/03/13/performance-under-pressure/ Components of stress response Trigger Speed of activation Magnitude of response Time to return to baseline Things that affect cortisol response time of day health genetics personality early pre-natal/childhood stressors- epigenetics can change DNA expression current stressors smoking if female- where you are in cycle or use of OCP interaction with testosterone Sensation of psychological stress is not always associated with physiological stress (i.e. cortisol stress response) Conversely in psychological studies in which subjects get exogenous steroids (i.e take a hydrocortisone pill) although there are often associated behavioral changes from the steroids participants rarely feel anxious. Somewhat ironic that women report more psychological stress but that men die on average 7 years earlier Things that reliably trigger physiological stress: Demands >>> Resources Unpredictability Uncontrollability Novelty Learning on stress is U shaped curve A little stress helps things stick more As stress increases harder to draw Some suggested sex differences: In general women have higher baseline HR than men (despite this, women are believed to have a higher parasympathetic baseline tone) Triggers: Men may be more vulnerable to stressors that trigger dominancy/hierarchy Women may be more vulnerable to stressors that trigger social isolation Free Cortisol is the active form and men appear to have higher free cortisol levels Women may be more sensitive to acth- similar cortisol level with less trigger. Men more likely to respond to threat of hierarchy, women social exclusion Stress resiliency: Time to respond, magnitude of response time until return to baseline To what, how quickly, how much, how long. Prashad's book The Death of the Nation and the Future of the Arab Revolution aims to address where the Arab world is heading. In early 2011, uprisings swept across northern Africa and the Middle East. The toppling of the Ben Ali government in Tunisia quickly gave way to mass protests in Egypt that brought about the ouster of the U.S.-backed Hosni Mubarak government after 30 years in power. But the Arab Spring soon turned to winter, as NATO intervened in Libya to topple the Muammar Gaddafi government and the U.S., western and Gulf states armed rebels in Syria.
Journalist and author Vijay Prashad joins the podcast this week to talk about Libya, where the the United States has resumed bombing. Prashad recounts what led to the intervention and the role Hillary Clinton played in influencing the U.S. decision to bomb Libya when she was secretary of state. Prashad also talks about Syria, the "suicidal death pact" the U.S. government has with the Saudi government, and the geopolitics between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which greatly influence developments in the Middle East.
On August 1st, Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse welcomed reknowned historian and theorist Vijay Prashad to MICA's Graduate Studio Center. In this talk, Prashad presented his latest book, The Poorer Nations, which picks up where his incredible history of the Bandung/Non-Aligned Movement effort to forge a third world political project, 2007's The Darker Nations, left off.
Become a Useful Idiot for extended interviews and bonus content at http://usefulidiots.substack.com “The jaws of Hell have opened wide.” Historian and author Vijay Prashad is worried about the next war that the US will provoke. Nukes in Ukraine, a new missile crisis in Taiwan, destabilizing sovereign South American nations, asserting control in Africa. All in the name of US hegemony. He focuses in on China: what if Xi Jinping flew to Guam like Nancy Pelosi flew to Taiwan? What would the US do? There are 29 US military bases in Africa. How many Chinese military bases are there? None. The US is expanding NATO to bypass the UN treaty in an attempt to rule the world. Is China to blame? Prashad, who has a new book co-authored by Noam Chomsky, analyzes the US's increasingly dictatorial role in the world from Russia to China to Cuba to South America: Colombia just elected a new left president. One of Gustavo Petro's first moves was to call for an end to the US-led, so-called “war on drugs.” Subscribe for the extended episode to hear Vijay discuss all of that, plus how capitalism has destroyed the ability of people to control their own lives; the nonsensical decision to place Cuba on the state sponsor of terrorism list; and why Jordan Peterson needs a hug. It's all this, and more, on this week's episode of Useful Idiots. Check it out.
