This week’s guest is Amos Bartelsmeyer of Nike and Bowerman Track Club, a 3:53 miler who represented Germany at the 2019 World Championships. We talked about his path from Saint Louis to Georgetown to Seattle and finally into the professional running world and how he got there. We also talked favorite race memories, go-to cocktails, short-shorts versus half-tights, and more. After graduating Georgetown University in 2018, Amos Bartelsmeyer moved to Seattle in hopes of being coached by incoming University of Washington coach Andy Powell. Despite being unsponsored, he was able to find a training group and came into 2019 on fire, eventually earning a Nike sponsorship and a spot at the 2019 world championships representing Germany. Since September, he’s been a member of Bowerman Track Club and recently ran 1:49 in the 800 and 3:38 in the 1500 in his first races in over a year. Amos is racing at the Trials of Miles Texas Qualifier presented by Citius Mag this weekend. In advance of the meet, Trials of Miles and Citius are teaming up to raise money for relief organizations doing work in Texas following the past week’s extreme weather and power outages. Episode 40 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is the King of Vintage, DECADES founder, author and Fashion Director of H HALSTON and H BY HALSTON: Cameron Silver.   Since fashion philanthropist Cameron Silver opened the doors of DECADES in 1997, the dress code in Los Angeles has irrevocably changed due – in large part – to Silver exhorting his frequently-photographed, trendsetting clientele to “dress up!” He is widely recognized for his impact on runway trends from fashion’s new generation of designers in New York and Paris to the way a constellation of Hollywood’s brightest appear on the red carpet. “I think of fashion, of dressing, as art. I’m not about disposable shopping. Even my day wear is glamour,” stated Silver. With the new guard of so many heritage houses from New York to Milan seeking inspiration at DECADES, it is hardly surprising Silver is frequently tapped both as public emissary and secret weapon to consult on everything from re-imagining a brand’s identity to navigating its global launch. He has served as an official ambassador for Pringle and Boucheron and as creative consultant to Azzaro. Silver also acted as creative consultant for the global launch of Samsonite’s iconic Fashionaire collection with actress Christina Ricci. In addition to Silver’s work with fashion companies, he curated the MOCA exhibition, The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt, and William Claxton, an exhibit that continues to tour. In Fall 2011, Silver showcased his flair for accessory design via the launch of The Haskell for DECADES “Uptown/Downtown” collection, his collaboration with jewelry maven Miriam Haskell. Partnering with Modern Vintage, Silver designed a collection of statement footwear inspired by the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.Named one of TIME Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion” in 2002, Silver is a favorite pundit on E! Entertainment, the Style Network and “Fashion File.” Pulling looks from Decades’ deep closets, he styles celebrities for major red carpet awards appearances like the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards. He has also written about luxury, from shopping to travel to his front row perch at the haute couture presentations, for Harpers Bazaar, C Magazine, Departures, vogue.com, and others leading fashion media outlets. Silver narrated the acclaimed 2012 documentary VERSAILLES '73: American Runway Revolution about the restoration event at the famed French palace that became the fashion showdown that firmly established American sportswear.Silver’s passion for good design extends beyond the realm of fashion. He was among the first to recognize the disappearing architectural legacy of Los Angeles’ great modernist homes, and scooped up a crumbling hillside 1930 treasure by icon R.M. Schindler which he spent eight years meticulously restoring. The L.A. Conservancy awarded the efforts, the house was landmarked, and it has appeared on the covers of shelter magazines and in several books. In January 2012, The Art of Elysium recognized Silver as the year’s Visionary and creative force behind their Heaven Gala. Silver also has a professional relationship with the Friends of The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2010, he served as the Honorary Chair of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis’ legendary Dada Ball.As one of the foremost vintage experts in the country and with more than 2 decades of DECADES under his alligator belt, Silver released the coffee table book DECADES: A Century of Fashion for Bloomsbury Press showcasing an unexpected compilation of the most significant 20th century fashions, as well as many of the celebrities he collaborated with over the years. The book, released in 2012, sold out within 48 hours of release and continues to be reprinted.  Silver starred in the Bravo reality show THE DUKES OF MELROSE which premiered in March of 2013. Since September 2015, he has served as Fashion Director for H by Halston (where he appears on QVC several times per week) and H Halston, available at Lord & Taylor, Dillard’s, and Hudson’s Bay.Also on Episode 40, Wendi and Dfernando discuss the HOLLYBOOB sign and they answer listener questions: beard maintenance, daily morning routines, inappropriate 80s song choices at church services and "bad" art collecting.  On the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT there's dill pickle slices, slow sidewalk walkers, Sacha Baron Cohen and social media rumors.   Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE...  and our guest Cameron Silver, DECADES and his Twitter.  Remember to subscribe, rate & leave a review for GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Joe Biden to the rescue? The President-elect last night previewed his first major policy package, targeting the pandemic and the economic crisis that has come with it. Meanwhile, dozens of white supremacist on a federal terrorism watch list were present for the storming of the Capitol last week. Investigators are looking into possible foreign financing behind the insurrection. And lastly, Donald Trump is having a hard time finding lawyers to defend him in his second impeachment trial. I guess Rudy can fail, after all. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: They’re calling it the American Rescue Plan. President-elect Joe Biden, who will take over the pandemic response in five days, gave a speech last night on his plans to combat the coronavirus and address its economic consequences, the Washington Post reports. His remarks came as more than four thousand Covid-19 deaths were reported in the United States for the second day in a row. The plan is divided into three major areas, according to the Post: $400 billion for provisions to fight the coronavirus, while reopening schools; more than $1 trillion in direct relief to families, including through stimulus payments and increased unemployment benefits; and $440 billion for aid to communities and businesses. The legislation includes a number of priorities sought by top congressional Democrats, from increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour to adding billions in funding for childcare. Biden said QUOTE We need more action, more bipartisanship, and we need to move fast ENDQUOTE. The measures are narrowly tailored in an effort to garner GOP support, Biden’s team told the Post. The overall price tag is below $2 trillion. It will be followed by a broader recovery plan with more expansive Democratic priorities. But after campaigning as a bipartisan dealmaker, Biden wants to give Republicans the opportunity to get behind his first legislative effort as president. You might say he’s offering them an off-ramp from the road to insurrection. That part sounds like a longshot, frankly, but this is Joe Biden we’re talking about. Foreign Insurrection Financing Investigated Don’t call them patriots. The Washington Post reports that dozens of people on a terrorist watch list were in Washington for pro-Trump events on January 6th, when a violent mob stormed the US Capitol. The majority of the watchlisted individuals in Washington that day are suspected white supremacists. Their past conduct so alarmed investigators that their names had been previously entered into the national Terrorist Screening Database, a massive set of names flagged as potential security risks, the Post’s sources said. The watch list is larger and separate from the no-fly list the government maintains, and those listed are not automatically barred from any public or commercial spaces. While the FBI is hunting hundreds of rioting suspects who have dispersed back to their hometowns, the Post reports, federal agents are increasingly focused on the Proud Boys. Privately, some federal law enforcement officials have described the group as roughly equivalent to a nascent street gang. But other officials have expressed concern that the group may be growing rapidly into something more dangerous and directed. Separately, Yahoo News reports that law enforcement is investigating whether a series of large Bitcoin donations were linked to the assault on the Capitol. On December 8th, someone made a simultaneous transfer of Bitcoins worth more than $500,000 to twenty-two different virtual wallets, most of them belonging to prominent right-wing organizations and personalities. Right-wing figures and websites, including VDARE, the Daily Stormer and Nick Fuentes, received generous donations from a bitcoin account linked to a French cryptocurrency exchange. The suspicious December transaction, along with other intelligence, has prompted law enforcement and intelligence agencies to investigate the sources of funding for individuals who participated in the Capitol insurrection. The government is hoping to prevent future attacks but also to uncover potential foreign involvement in or support of right-wing activities, Yahoo’s source said. The plot thickens! Trump Lacks Impeachment Defense Donald Trump, on the eve of facing a second impeachment trial, is having trouble finding a legal team to defend him, Bloomberg News reports. Allies of the outgoing president have been looking for representation but so far are coming up short. Lawyers who defended him in the previous impeachment trial, including Jay Sekulow, have said no this time. Other lawyers who have defended Trump, including Pam Bondi, aren’t interested. Some of the lawyers have privately said what Trump did was indefensible. Alan Dershowitz also defended Trump the first time around. He isn’t planning to represent the president now, Bloomberg reports. Rudy Giuliani is also unlikely to be on the president’s defense team, an administration official said. His conduct at the rally preceding the Capitol raid could be examined during an impeachment trial. Separately, ABC News reports that the Trump family is pulling up stakes. Donald and Melania Trump have made no secret of their impending move to Florida after January 20, but they won't be alone. The president's eldest son, Donald Trump Junior, and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle have been house-hunting in the Palm Beach area. Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, also plan to relocate to the Sunshine State in the coming weeks, having recently purchased a plot of land in the Miami area. In related real estate news, the Washington Post reports that the Secret Service detail assigned to Jared and Ivanka spent months searching for a restroom to use on the job. After resorting to a porta-potty, the agents finally found a toilet to call their own. But it came at a cost to US taxpayers. Since September 2017, the federal government has been spending $3,000 a month – more than $100,000 to date – to rent a basement studio, with a bathroom, from a neighbor of the Kushners. All this because agents were banned from using any the six point five bathrooms in Javanka’s mansion. Charming. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: The New York State attorney general sued the New York City Police Department yesterday over widespread abuses in how officers handled Black Lives Matter protests last summer, the New York Times reports. The AG, Letitia James, wants a federal monitor to oversee the department’s policing tactics at future protests. She also wants a court to declare that the practices the department used during the protests were unlawful. Get ’em Letitia! Rick Snyder, the former governor of Michigan, was arraigned on misdemeanor charges yesterday in connection with his role in the Flint water crisis. The Times reports thatnhe was charged with two counts of willful neglect of duty. If he is convicted, he faces imprisonment of up to one year or a maximum fine of $1,000. It ain’t much but it’s something. Joe Biden plans to name Jaime Harrison as his pick to lead the Democratic National Committee, the Washington Post reports. A former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, Harrison last year raised $130 million in his losing race against Senator Lindsey Graham. Harrison is not expected to face a challenger, and his candidacy was promoted by Congressman James Clyburn, a close Biden ally. Puerto Rican police are investigating the death of a transgender man found with multiple gunshot wounds, NBC News reports. Samuel Edmund Damián Valentín, shot January 9, is the seventh known transgender person to die by violence in Puerto Rico since last February. Advocates say the police aren’t doing enough. Hopefully more awareness on the case will cause them to pick up the pace. After Thursday night’s Fire and Police Commission meeting, the city of Milwaukee still doesn’t have a new police chief. The panel deadlocked in two previous votes on who’ll replace former Chief Alfonso Morales. On Thursday, commission Chair Nelson Soler said commissioners would not take a vote. Instead, he read a statement: "Since September 2020, we have received verbal advice from the city attorney’s office that we can proceed with the search and screening selection of a new chief. ... Since that advice has not been provided in writing, I feel it is imprudent for this board to continue with this process." The commission chief said the legal challenge brought by Morales, who was demoted, adds to uncertainty. Since September, thousands of farmers have been protesting the new laws that aim to deregulate Indian agriculture. They have clearly stated that these neo-liberal laws will dismantle safeguards, create greater instability, severely affect their livelihoods, and put the country's food security at risk. While simultaneously creating an opportunity for large private corporations to enter and exploit the agriculture sector. Organized by more than 31 trade unions, the protest has drawn support from nearly all Punjabi society segments. These peaceful protests have been met with tear gas, water cannons, and violence by the Indian Police. Yet, the protests continue to grow and have now spread to other Indian cities. The Indian diaspora and their allies have also taken to the street to support the farmer's protests. They are building a powerful solidarity movement globally to fight against the emergence of Hindutva, its politics, and violence. In the united states, Council Member Kshama Sawant is seen as an important ally in this fight. This month She introduced the Seattle city council resolution in solidarity with farmers' protests in India. In February this year, she also introduced the resolution that urged India to uphold the Constitution by repealing the citizenship laws and to stop the National Register of Citizens. Joining us today to discuss the recent resolution in support of the farmer's protest, why she introduced it, and understand the significance and effectiveness of these resolutions is Council Member Kshama Sawant. Sawant is an American politician and economist who has served on the Seattle City Council since 2014. A former software engineer, Sawant became an economics instructor in Seattle after immigrating to the United States from her native India. She was the first socialist to win a citywide election in Seattle since Anna Louise Strong was elected to the school board in 1916. Students have access whenever they need to, and can go back and revise from these resources at a later date.”An example of this in action is a Year 13 Business lesson Rachael shows us during the podcast.“Within this lesson, I have written down some instructions for students. Learning from What We've Lost: Protecting LTC Residents & Staff  “My passion for human rights and elder justice was rekindled.”— Cinnamon St. John, MPA, MA Over the past year, COVID-19 has swept through our nation, ruthlessly claiming lives and nowhere has its toll been felt more than in our nation’s nursing homes. While only accounting for 8% of total cases in the United States,  almost 40 percent of all COVID-related deaths in the United States were nursing home staff and residents. Lawmakers are looking for policy solutions to help stop the destruction within the walls of our nation’s nursing facilities.   In this episode, we’ll talk with Health and Aging Policy Fellow Cinnamon St. John and one of the nation’s leading nursing home advocates, Toby S. Edelman, about the complexities of this issue, along with potential solutions. Part One: ‘Learning from What We've Lost: Protecting LTC Residents & Staff’ with Cinnamon St. John and Toby Edelman In February 2020, the nation saw the first appearance of COVID-19 in a nursing home in Washington state. Nine months later, the coronavirus has spread across the country and over 87,000 nursing home residents and staff have died.  Older adults living in nursing homes have been more likely to die from COVID due to being our oldest, frailest, and sick citizens.  Addressing the issues in nursing homes is complicated because the challenges are wide-ranging -- spanning federal, state, and local levels -- and cross-cutting sectors, all the while being interconnected.  Additionally, COVID-19 potentially exacerbated cracks in the foundations of many nursing homes that existed before the pandemic. Those range from a myriad of staffing issues, such as not having enough nurses on staff and underpaid nursing home direct care workers, to racial inequalities -- where facilities with more racial and ethnic minorities had more confirmed cases and deaths -- to infection prevention and control issues.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 8 out of 10 COVID-related deaths in the United States have been in adults 65 and older. “There are serious consequences for residents if facilities don’t follow infection control rules.” — Toby Edelman, Ed. M., JD Recently, a nursing home in Kansas reported that all 62 of its residents had tested positive for COVID-19 and 10 had already died.  That facility was cited with the most serious level of infection control problems in May 2020, but there is no record of any penalty.  If the facility had corrected its infection control problems, it’s likely that the virus would not have swept through as it did. That's why the rules have to be enforced.  If violations don't lead to a real penalty and a fundamental change in practices, then they're just words on paper, and that is not enough.   Part Two: ‘Learning from What We've Lost: Protecting LTC Residents & Staff’ with Cinnamon St. John and Toby Edelman Infection control experts are currently warning that the surge in COVID-19 cases in parts of the nation is expected to get worse over the coming weeks and months. Nursing homes are in a position where they need to learn from one another’s collective coronavirus experiences to ensure lives are not needlessly lost.  Research has shown that there are a number of best practices that nursing facilities can implement. The trick is pulling the levers simultaneously, which requires a great amount of planning, action, and accountability. “A great society should do great things for its older adult population.” —  Cinnamon St. John, MPA, MA One crucial lever is increasing staffing levels.  LeadingAge recently released a report arguing that paying workers a living wage (not minimum wage or just above minimum wage) would reduce staffing shortages, reduce turnover, improve quality of care for residents, and reduce workers’ reliance on public benefit programs based on need, such as Medicaid. Numerous studies (including this one by previous podcast guest Charlene Harrington) appear to show that understaffing of registered nurses may increase the risk of larger outbreaks. We need to use this increased attention on nursing homes to get to other major changes.  About Cinnamon St. John, MPA, MA 2019-2020 Health and Aging Policy Fellow through the American Political Science Association (APSA) Cinnamon is the Associate Director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (HIGN) at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. She designs and manages programs that focus on ensuring optimal health and quality of life for older adults through interprofessional and patient education. Her work at HIGN has helped train over 2,000 Bronx seniors on wellness and disease self-management has strengthened collaboration between a major NYC health system and community-based organizations, and has driven the national and international dissemination of elder care training modules. She has also led the development of a strategic partnership between HIGN and a New York-based long-term care provider as part of the state’s “Workforce Investment Organization” (WIO) initiative. This program is helping to build and support a robust training infrastructure that will enhance the skills and advancement opportunities of long-term care workers in the region. Prior to this placement, she was with the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging in the office of Chairman Susan Collins (R-Maine). For the Committee, Cinnamon helped inform policy and drive the oversight of legislation focused on improving the support infrastructure for older Americans, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s Disease.   As a former journalist, Cinnamon is passionate about increasing public awareness of the needs of older adults, the challenges that our society is facing in addressing those needs, and the opportunities we have to improve how we care for our aging population. Cinnamon has received a Master’s of Public Administration from the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and an MA in International Peace and Security from King’s College London. Toby S. Edelman, Ed. M., JD Senior Policy Attorney, Center for Medicare Advocacy Toby S. Edelman has been representing older people in long-term care facilities since 1977. As a Senior Policy Attorney with the Center for Medicare Advocacy since January 2000, Ms. Edelman provides training, research, policy analysis, consultation, and litigation support relating to nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. California Department of Health Services, Civ. No. S-90-1226 EJG (E.D. Calif. 1993).  As a beneficiary representative, Ms. Edelman has testified before Congress and served on federal task forces, technical expert panels, and working groups on nursing home issues.   Ms. Edelman received a B.A., Magna cum Laude, from Barnard College (1968), an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (1969), and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center (1974).  Ms. Edelman is a member of the Washington, DC Bar. My fellow Divas, This week we celebrate both an historical triumph and an historical failure. Yes, Donald Trump is about to be exorcised from the White House. Yes, Kamala Harris is set to become the first female, black and Indian-origin vice-president in history. And yet... Over here, across the pond, we have suffered another damaging blow to our democracy. The "Great" British Public, in their seemingly endless capacity for showing their arse, have voted for walking embodiments of crusty sheets, the cringe-inducing, sub-McFly, straight, white nonsense that is Since September to win Little Mix: The Search. We will move forward. But, it will take time. Meanwhile, life goes on. And so does the Week in Diva. Geri Horner's been in the dressing-up box again, Kylie's dropped a banger and we ask the question on everyone's lips: where is Jesy Nelson? Plus, it's once more unto the Bitch, dear friends, with Rich. Chris has another spoopy coincidence for us and we spin the wheel on Excellent or Fine.   Landaas & Company newsletter  October edition now available. Advisors on This Week’s Show KYLE TETTING BRIAN KILB DAVE SANDSTROM (with Max Hoelzl, Joel Dresang, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (Oct. 12-16, 2020) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday No major announcements Tuesday The broadest measure of inflation showed prices continuing to recover in September after the recession sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.2%, the narrowest of four consecutive monthly gains, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A 6.7% jump in used car prices accounted for most of the increase from August. Since September 2019, overall prices rose 1.4%, up from 1.3% in August and well below the Federal Reserve target of 2% inflation. Over the year, food prices rose 3.9% and energy fell 7.7%. Excluding food and energy prices, the core CPI rose 1.7% from the year before, unchanged from August. Using CPI data, the Social Security Administration announced a 1.3% benefit increase for 2021, about one-third of the average raise since 1975. (Read our preview of the Social Security raise here.) Wednesday Recovery from the economic collapse in the spring continued to show in wholesale inflation figures from September. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the Producer Price Index rose 0.4% from August, the fifth increase in a row after declines from February through April. A rise in the cost of trade services such as hotel prices led the gains. The PPI rose 0.4% from September 2019, the first year-to-year gain in six months. Aside from volatile food, energy and trade service costs, the index rose 0.7% from the year before. Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims rose for the first time in 11 weeks, signaling a stall in the recovery of labor markets. Claims averaged 866,250, well above the pre-pandemic high, which was 674,000 in 1982. Average claims reached a 50-year low of 208,000 in February. The Labor Department said 25.3 million Americans claimed jobless benefits, up from 1.4 million the year before. Friday With consumer spending driving about two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product, accelerated retail spending in September suggested a continued rebound from the medically induced recession. The Commerce Department said spending at stores rose 1.9% from August, the fifth gain in a row and the steepest rise since May. Electronics and appliance stores were the only category of 13 to have lower sales for the month. Gains were led by sellers of clothing, sporting goods and cars. Year-to-year, retail sales rose 5.4%, but the categories showed how the pandemic has shifted shopping patterns. For instance, online retailers saw sales rise 23.8% from September 2019 while bars and restaurants were down 14.4%. The U.S. industrial sector suffered a setback in its recovery with industrial production declining 0.6% in September, the first dip since April, according to the Federal Reserve. Year-to-year, the output of factories, mines and utilities was down 7.3%. Capacity utilization, a measure of potential inflation, also fell for the first time since April. At 71.5% capacity, industries were above the record low of 64.2% four months earlier but remained short of the mark of 76.9% in February and well below the long-term average of 79.8%, which hasn’t been reached in more than 12 years. A preliminary October reading of consumer sentiment suggested lower opinions of current economic conditions. Survey research from the University of Michigan showed a continuing rise in expectations, which still remained far below where they were in February. Feelings toward current conditions declined because of slowing job growth, a resurgence in coronavirus cases and the expiration of pandemic relief payments for millions of displaced workers. Since September 2015, Mark Lacey has served as Chief Executive of the Diocese of Salisbury Academy Trust. The trust comprises of eighteen academies, across Wiltshire and Dorset. The Trust serves 3,500 pupils and has a clear and active growth strategy as it seeks to drive forward improvement of its academies, the vast majority of which entered the Trust under sponsored arrangements. The Diocese of Salisbury Academy Trust has a vision for the growth of thriving learning communities, that provide everyone with the opportunity to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Christian values and service are at the heart of all we do, as we help young people to develop excitement in learning. Mark served as Headteacher in a large challenging primary school in South Bristol. Appointed to headship at the age of 30, Mark led the school from inadequate to good. Key to the success of the school was the relentless focus on creating and maintaining an empowering vision for all members of the school community. Alongside this, development of people was key, and the school developed its own programme of coaching for all staff as well as being recognised as a Gold Level Investor in People. Mark also led the development of the Malago Learning Partnership, a collaboration of 9 local schools. As Chair of the group he guided the development of a highly successful school improvement strategy, an in-depth joint practice development programme and a range of curriculum and assessment programmes. In 2012 he led his school through the academy conversion process. He has also served for a number of years as a governor at a secondary school within the partnership. which achieved its first ever ‘good’ inspection outcome during this time. In addition to his work in school, Mark was very much involved in the development of the Local Leader of Education of education programme in Bristol through the National College, working in a coaching role with Headteachers to support them in the development and growth of leadership capacity; working with Headteachers to find solutions and ways forward within their own organisations. Mark has a Business Degree from the University of Bath as well as a Masters, with distinction, in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Worcester, the latter of which focused on the effective features of collaborative partnerships between schools. Mark has four children of his own and is very active in the work of his local church. www.dsat.org.uk Twitter: @thedsat Linked In: Mark Lacey Mark was involved with new research produced by PrimarySite. It questions how easy it is for multi academy trusts (MATS) to grow and how Covid-19 has made expansion harder. Sustainable Growth in Multi Academy Trusts interviewed and surveyed MAT leaders and experts to get their insight on how MAT could grow. It identifies five important challenges: lack of available schools wanting to join MATs, a risk averse culture, competition from other MATs, a shortage of senior leaders with the right expertise, and limited access to funding to support growth. The research also found that managing immediate issues linked to the pandemic needed to take priority and would slow the growth of MATs plans for growth. Today in the Word Devotional

A website called Rate My Professor allows college students to evaluate their teachers, rating them on their level of difficulty and expertise. Many students, when selecting courses, will look at those reviews and use that information to decide which course to enroll in. These student reviews are highly influential! What one student, who has been through the course, says carries significance for those deciding whether or not to enroll. In his review of Jesus, John the Baptist declared Him “the Lamb of God” (v. 35), a statement that heavily influenced Andrew and John. Jesus then issued this life-changing invitation to His disciples to experience Him for themselves: “Come and you will see” (v. 39). He invited them to come, to walk alongside Him. After spending the day with Jesus, Andrew enthusiastically went to his brother Simon and proclaimed, “We have found the Messiah” (v. 41). Both John and Andrew became influencers, sharing the good news that the Messiah had come. Word of Jesus quickly spread to many others, including Philip, Andrew, and Peter. History now records the disciples’ day-to-day experiences as they walked alongside God’s Son and learned from His example. And Jesus’ influence did not stop with His death, resurrection, and ascension. His life has been recorded in the bestselling book of all time spreading from Jew to Gentile and to every continent. When we share how Christ has worked in our own lives, we influence others. Since September 2, 1981, my life has truly never been the same. Hallelujah! September 2 was the day of my salvation. Tell others how your life has been miraculously influenced by the saving grace of Jesus Christ. >> How has your life been changed by Jesus? Tell someone about it today, in a conversation, with a letter, or even on social media. While you might not write a bestselling book, you can certainly tell someone today Who has influenced your life.

The tweet cites the fact that since people are traveling less during the COVID-19 crisis, they won't need to charge as frequently, so they won't need the Electrify America network as often an they usually do."   https://insideevs.com/news/406179/electrify-america-waives-monthly-fees-coronavirus-crisis/   GM AND FORD’S EV PRODUCTION PLANS FOR THE US HAVE LEAKED "despite the grand gestures and proclamations of an electric car-centric future from American automakers General Motors and Ford, the two companies’ actual production plans for North America are still centered on large, internal combustion-powered vehicles. According to detailed production plans from GM and Ford that were viewed by Reuters, the two biggest American automakers will be making 5 million petrol-powered SUVs and pickup trucks in 2026, and only 320,000 electric vehicles." says Teslarati: "Putting it mildly, a production target of 320,000 electric vehicles in 2026 is a joke. Both companies, after all, have been insisting that they are all-in on an electric car push. Ford and GM’s upcoming electric cars risk becoming yet another generation of compliance cars. This is a shame, as some EVs announced by the two automakers have the potential to cause some serious disruptions in the auto market. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gm-ford-ev-production-plans-leaked/   Is it just the ev pres though? Well no. From Autobblog; "detroit has tried to latch onto the consumer and investor excitement over electric vehicles made by Tesla, whose market value is double that of GM and Ford combined, even though its sales are much smaller. GM executives have been repeating a "zero emissions" mantra since 2017, and the company's website features a prominent commitment to its "all-electric future. GM and Ford expect to produce about 320,000 pure electric vehicles — powered solely by a battery — in North America in 2026. That is nearly 10 times the 35,000 they have planned to build in 2020, but fewer than the 367,500 Tesla delivered last year."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/26/gm-ford-truck-suv-sales-electric-cars/   And what about Electrek's take? "Reuters hits the nail on the head, although understating the case: “That may be good for automakers’ finances, but probably not for the environment.” From the looks of things, the Detroit automakers are content to let Tesla own the EV market for most of this decade. That may be good news for Elon Musk, but terrible news for climate change and the air we breathe."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/03/26/gm-and-ford-plan-to-make-320k-evs-in-2026-less-than-teslas-output-in-2019/#aprd   VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 STILL SUFFERING FROM SOFTWARE ISSUES "Alleged software problems with the VW ID.3 development have been treading the rumour mill recently. Now a spokesperson officially confirmed the issues, while insider information reflects a more dire reality."  writes electrive: "Volkswagen will probably only release a toned-down version of the ID.3 due to continuing problems with software, local media reports. The company wants to stick to the long-communicated schedule with the start of deliveries in summer – VW CEO Herbert Diess had repeated this when presenting the annual figures last week. Now other tones are coming from Wolfsburg: “one or the other planned function” will first be cancelled and then later be delivered via an update, a VW spokesperson confirmed. “Things are not going great”, the spokesman said."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/26/volkswagen-id-3-still-suffering-from-software-issues/   From the newspaper: "Company insiders quoted by the paper apparently consider this an understatement. “It’s no longer a laughing matter,” they write. The car is far from being ready for the market, according to the source. Another source is also of the opinion that the company is “not even close to an industrial production process at ID.3”. VW CEO Diess will definitely have a few cars to show this summer, “but we’ll tinker them by hand so that something is there.” This has nothing to do with series production."   2021 BMW 3 SERIES GETS PLUG-IN HYBRID WITH INCREASED EV RANGE "BMW adds  a new plug-in hybrid 330e and 330e xDrive to its portfolio of electrified cars, offering up to an estimated 22 miles of all-electric driving in the 330e; the 330e xDrive with all-wheel drive is estimated at 20 miles." reports Cars.com: "The 330e and 330e xDrive both use the same combination of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine, electric motor and battery producing a total system output of 288 hp. When operating on electric power only in Hybrid mode, the 330e can move at speeds up to 68 mph and when in fully electric mode, the 330e can travel at speeds up to 87 mph, increases of 19 and 12 mph, respectively."   https://www.cars.com/articles/2021-bmw-3-series-gets-plug-in-hybrid-with-increased-ev-range-419858/   NISSAN LEAF AS HOME ENERGY DEVICE: WALLBOX WILL SOON ENABLE IT IN THE U.S. "By the end of the year, there should at last be an entry in the U.S. capable of taking advantage of the Leaf’s potential as an energy device for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) schemes. The Quasar will cost about $4,000—possibly subsidized to less by utility partnerships—and made its premiere for the U.S. at CES in January.  It will be available here later in 2020, according to Wallbox, but it will only be initially usable by those who have a vehicle with native CHAdeMO DC fast charging, like the Nissan Leaf" so says Green Car Reports   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127590_nissan-leaf-as-home-energy-device-wallbox-will-soon-enable-it-in-the-u-s   NISSAN LEAF RESTORES POWER TO 7-ELEVEN STORES TO PREP FOR DISASTERS IN JAPAN "In the past two years, more than 8 million households in Japan have experienced power outages due to natural disasters. In response, Nissan developed a system that uses vehicle-to-grid technology that allows customers to use the Leaf’s battery pack to power buildings." writes electrek: "Since September, the system has been tested using renewable energy stored in an old Leaf battery pack, repurposed for stationary use, and then supplied to 7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture. The system is expected to come to market by the end of 2020. In the trials, the Leaf can directly power the building, or the repurposed battery can be charged via solar to either power a building later, or to recharge the car. In this special episode of Mamamia Out Loud, Holly Wainwright, Mia Freedman and Jessie Stephens discuss what’s happened, why such fury is being directed at our Prime Minister and perhaps most importantly, what can be done to help.  For a full list of where to donate, see the list below:  New South Wales Support your local brigade https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/support-your-local-brigade Support firefighter’s families http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media/general-news/featured/support-for-firefighter-families Giveit NSW - you can donate money or find specific items that have been requested for donation https://givit.worldsecuresystems.com/items-needed?campaign=50 Mogo Zoo Fire Recovery https://au.gofundme.com/f/mogo-zoo-fire-recovery  Port Macquarie Koala Hospital https://au.gofundme.com/f/help-thirsty-koalas-devastated-by-recent-fires Victoria Bushfire Appeal for the ongoing support of bushfire survivors https://www.vic.gov.au/bushfireappeal Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund https://www.gerf.org.au/donate/  GoFundMe pages have been set up for the Victorian communities of Cudgewa https://bit.ly/2Qr1F3b and Mallacootahttps://www.gofundme.com/f/mallacoota-fires-support-fund Wildlife Victoria https://www.facebook.com/donate/466018984334454/2938373519529456/ South Australia  CFS foundation https://cfsfoundation.org.au/donate Gofundme for Kangaroo Island wildlife recovery and rehabilitation efforts https://bit.ly/37KGQFx  Kangaroo Island Mayoral Relief and Recovery Bushfire Fund  https://bit.ly/2T3dhLy  Adelaide Koala Rescue LTD http://www.akr.org.au/donate  Queensland RFBAQ Donations https://rfbaq.org/donate-to-a-specific-brigade Queensland-government-backed Givit is coordinating donations of items across Australia. https://givit.worldsecuresystems.com/items-needed?campaign=4 General Help Donate blood with the Australian Red Cross https://www.donateblood.com.au/  Australian Lions Foundation https://www.givenow.com.au/australianlionsfoundation  RSPCA https://www.rspcansw.org.au/  Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery https://www.redcross.org.au/campaigns/disaster-relief-and-recovery-donate  WIRES for animal support and care https://www.wires.org.au/donate/emergency-fund

Since September 1, the ongoing fighting between armed groups has forced large numbers of people in Birao, in the north-east of the Central African Republic, to flee their homes. More than 25,000 people – almost the entire population of the town – were forced to flee empty-handed in a matter of hours to makeshift camps, leaving behind homes that have either been ransacked or burnt down. In addition to conflict it faces, the Central African Republic is identified as the most at-risk country in terms of population growth and climate vulnerability. In this episode of the podcast, we have Valérie Petitpierre, the ICRC Head of Delegation in the Central African Republic since 2018. She has worked in the ICRC since 2004 in such varied contexts as Israel and the Occupied Territories, Sudan, Sri Lanka and Yemen. We are also joined by Alejandra Portillo-Tayor, ICRC’s Policy Associate. Hosted by Niki Clark.

Since September 11, Australia has enacted over 80 counterterrorism and national security laws. The laws are often controversial although usually passed quickly through Parliament. The Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM) reports on whether such laws are necessary, proportionate to the threats that caused them to be enacted, and comply with human rights standards and international law obligations. The role has been described as “an important and valued component of Australia’s national security architecture”. Lowy Institute Research Fellow Dr Rodger Shanahan had a conversation with the current Monitor, Dr James Renwick SC, where they discussed the role of the INSLM and two laws under his review: the so-called ‘encryption laws’ that allow security agencies to access encrypted messages; and the laws that lead to automatic loss of citizenship by dual citizens who engage in acts of terrorism. Dr James Renwick SC is a member of the NSW Bar with a general commercial and public law practice, and particular interests in appellate, disciplinary, national security and inquiry work. He is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Australian National University and since 2017 has been the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor.

Through extensive research and a broad knowledge base on different financial institutions, e3 believes there are specific types of life insurance companies that offer specific types of life insurance contracts with certain beneficial features to a conservative saver or entrepreneur. A highly trained financial professional can use these contracts to offer a tremendous alternative to traditional banking methods. Please understand that e3 is not actually creating a real bank for our clients or communicating that life insurance companies are the same as a bank. Rather we are attempting to design a financial vehicle that can mimic certain banking functions in one's personal & business economy - like financing big ticket purchases and controlling where your cash flow is stored before you utilize it. If properly designed and monitored frequently by a financial professional who is well trained in cash flow strategies and alternative asset classes, your opinion of whole life insurance may change significantly. This podcast episode will provide you specific information regarding The Moriarty Family Bank. Since September 2009, John Moriarty has structured a private banking system for both personal and business utilization. In less than eight years, this system has allowed the Moriarty's to store over $1.27 Million in four different policies. There have been 20 policy loans taken for various purchases, strategic investments, and every day needs of an entrepreneur and his family. Meanwhile, $1 Million+ of loan repayments have flowed back to the system and a total of $14 Million in life insurance coverage has been created to create a multi-generational legacy! The entire time these funds are working for the Moriarty Family earning a conservative 3-4% (non-taxable) while the Moriarty's are using their money! All of the data is located on that page as well as access to the eBook "Building Your Own Privatized Banking System." Canadian Prepper Podcast

Ep 8 - First Aid Eric –Welcome to episode #8 of the Canadian Prepper Podcast…First Aid!  My name is Eric, and I’m the host of the show. I am based in southern Ontario. I’m a hunter, target shooter, HAM radio operator (VE3EPN), and computer geek. I got into preparedness when I was working front line in emergency services and witnessed an over reliance on Emergency Services during major events, such has ice storms, power outages, etc. I started a small preparedness company to help get people prepared and able to look after themselves for at least 72 hours, if not longer. Ian – My name is Ian, co-host of the show.  I live on Vancouver Island, on a small hobby farm.   I am an outdoor enthusiast, target shooter, reloader, and my farm’s designated handyman. I have had a lifelong interest in preparedness, and I am gladly learning new skills on a regular basis.  My professional background has allowed me to see pretty much every province and territory in Canada. It also has taught me to prepare for various unexpected situations daily. Andrew Intro - My name is Andrew and I can usually be found hosting Canadian Patriot Podcast live on Youtube monday nights at 9pm eastern. In addition to recording the number one podcast in Canada, I run a firearms training and accessories tax shelter, Ragnarok Tactical. We deliver training for competition shooters, first aid training, and sell everything from boots to barrels, to tourniquets and and tacos. In real life I work a 9-5 job leading a team in information technology and raising a young family. Eric – We have some great content for you in this episode, We’re going to start off with some news articles relating to preparedness and the outdoors. Next we will be letting you know how we’ve improved our preparedness since our last episode, ,  and then were going to get into the main topic for this episode, First Aid and its role in preparedness. WHAT WE’VE DONE LATELY for preps   Andrew - I just had some forced leave from work so we installed new networking equipment at home including a battery backup, and prepped a few thousand 223 cases for reloading. We also cleaned and reorganized our cold room and removed all the “expired” food and made sure that all the shelf stable items were organised so the items that would reach end of life soonest are at the front. We also rotated and verified the water storage, we have 1 week on hand and are working towards 2 weeks .   Ian -  Holiday season slows down most preps.  Solstice dinner got cancelled, but still had to run our gift day and feeding with no power.  Got to do a dry run on a ‘grid down’ scenario due to the power outage we will talk about below.  Cut up a few trees with the help of a neighbour that fell. Topped up feeders and waterers. Bucked up the trees also downed by the arborist from last episode.  No shortage of firewood this year! Tested the efficacy of my backup water system. Shortcomings noted in power cable line for genny, and using the UPS for cell phones.  Fridges were fine. My mother mentioned I should get a genny… Clearly not watching the podcast….   Eric -  I filled a pile of orders for Rapid Survival, the Christmas rush is officially here. . . So that cleared out a bunch of room for some new toys. Did some research on new gear and will be bringing in some new radios for the new year. Of course one or two of those will need to make their way into my packs.   News - Ian - https://www.narcity.com/ca/bc/vancouver/news/150000-people-in-bc-are-affected-by-power-outages-right-now-due-to-high-winds-up-to-100kmhour Ironically podcast delayed due to power outage.  Solstice dinner got cancelled due to about 200+ trees in my neighbourhood going down.  Friends still without power. Major grid damage on the island. Eric - https://www.richmond-news.com/news/richmond-school-district-to-put-350-000-towards-emergency-preparedness-1.23535369 Dec 13, 2018 Richmond School District to put $350,000 towards emergency preparedness. By the end of February, supplies are expected to be distributed to all Richmond schools and will ensure they are prepared for multiple days following an emergency. Supplies will include water, food, rain ponchos, solar blankets, first aid and staging area supplies. “Since September 2018, meetings have been held with school district administrators, health and safety committees, parent advisory committees, stakeholders, the City of Richmond Emergency Preparedness Team and the R.C.M.P,” said a statement from the Richmond School District. Main topic- Basic and advanced First Aid (Subject matter expert imported for this one) Intro to Andrew - Andrew’s background / bio / qualifications   So I was in the Canadian Forces for about 5 minutes, I didn’t do anything cool and I never deployed. I did however take the Army’s idea of a first aid course. I also keep my Red Cross Standard First Aid up to date with a renewal every 2 years, I’ll be recertifying in January or February. I have to have that to run ranges on military bases which I do regularly for the Ontario Rifle Association, plus it probably helps to have for my day job. Advanced first aid courses I’ve taken Spent Brass Training Solutions LLC Tactical First Responder Trauma Course – 2018 American College of Surgeons Bleeding Control Basic v 1.0 – 2018 Questions we plan to ask:) -What is the minimum qualification level a prepper should aspire to reach?   WCB level 1? EMT Training?, is CPR C enough etc? A - As much as possible. College Paramedic courses are probably overkill and requires 2 years of study. Standard First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Stop the Bleed/Bleeding Control Basic are probably going to cover 90% of what you can expect to deal with day to day. But more is always better. -What is the Minimum equipment list, other than the standard ouch pouch?  Ie: stacks of gauze , truck kits, Chest seal, Medical stapler, israeli bandage, (sprinkle on Hemo agents)  Explain the utility and likelihood of need for each. Maybe Epi-Pens? A - Please don’t use sprinkle on Hemostatic agents, the technology is out of date and less effective. As with most things it depends. 3 Factors Cost Size Scope of Practice 1 Cost How much can you afford to buy? How many kits do you need? Are they different? I keep 3 different IFAKs. CarEnough for 1 to 2 people with major trauma likely to be encountered in a Motor Vehicle Collision Work/Range BagEnough for 1 person with major trauma Range beltSmall on my belt enough for one person with a small trauma, like 1 bullet hole We’re also working on building home and vehicle trauma kits with more stuff to deal with greater number of casualties following the use of an IFAK, basically additional trauma supplies plus supporting tools for longer periods of care. IFAK - Individual First Aid Kit - Contents Airway (training)Nasopharyngeal Airway, 28 French + lube BandageEmergency Bandage aka Israeli bandage 4” or 6” CuttingShears - airport friendly HemostaticQuikClot Combat Gauze Celox Gauze Occlusive DressingsFoxseal PPEGloves TourniquetCAT 2 Size How big is the kit? Can you carry it with you? Does it stay at home or in a vehicle? The largest kit in the world is not helpful if its 100 yards away and you’re bleeding out. 3 Scope of Practice What are you trained, comfortable, and “allowed” to perform? What about keeping things that you can’t use but a Doctor, Nurse, or EMT could? What if you’re SOL and have to do it to save a life? For example I will not do rescue breaths on non-family members. I’ll do compressions or what ever but I don’t know where they have been. The time to figure this out is now, not when you come on to a scene.   Ian -  (Fentanyl second hand poisoning)   -Cheap place to buy bulk consumables such as gauze?  Brands to avoid?   Ian - (Ono Safety supply)   -Combat first Aid courses, any in Canada?  Describe what is taught…. A - Ragnarok Tactical partnership with Spent Brass Training Solutions LLC Tactical First Responder Trauma Course Last year it was two days of scenario based and hands on training. Email from Alan -   Good afternoon Eric and Ian,   Just wanted to say thanks for putting this out!   I'm also a Southern Ontario Native (west of London). Haven't had my HAM licence for a few years but interested in  getting it back.   I've been prepping at various stages and phases for nearly 25 years now. It started in scouts when I got lost in the woods on a hike and had to spend the night.   In my 'spare time' I hunt, fish, teach first aid, and build towards self-reliance.   I truly appreciate the Canadian perspective of prepping. I listen to a few American podcasts as well. The differences are STAGGERING.   One of the first times I ever put my plans into place was during the 2003 blackout. I was a 2nd tier responder affiliated with local fire and EMS teams (volunteer) and spent almost 48 hours helping prevent life-threatening emergencies.   EDC, first aid, and SIP preps  are my primary areas of focus.   Keep up the great work.
