Closer than Cuba: the Able Archer Nuclear Crisis of 1983

It's November of 1983, the closest the world came to nuclear war, some may argue even closer than the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Yet the Able Archer 1983 exercise incident is relatively unknown by comparison. A series of events that started with the Soviet shootdown of a Korean Air Lines plane, ended with not one but two almosts, when it came to accidental nuclear war. This included a simulated nuclear release authority request that may have been seen in Moscow as the prelude to a first strike. How these events unfolded was a result of heightened Cold War tension, antagonism, and miscommunication. Brian Morra was a US Air Force intelligence officer who had a front row seat to this, and sits down with guest host Dr. Mark Jacobson to discuss how the world came to the brink of nuclear war.  Subscribe to Sasha's Substack, HUMINT, to get more intelligence stories: https://sashaingber.substack.com/ For more information about the International Spy Museum, visit:  https://www.spymuseum.org/ And if you have feedback or want to hear about a particular topic,  you can reach us by email at spycast@spymuseum.org. As planting and growing season continues across the country, stewardship remains one of the most important responsibilities for growers and applicators. In this episode of North American Ag Spotlight, host Chrissy Wozniak sits down with Mike Aerts, Vice President of Science and Regulatory Affairs at the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association, to discuss the 2026 BeSure! Campaign and the role stewardship plays in protecting pollinators, wildlife, water quality, and agricultural productivity.Mike explains how the BeSure! Campaign serves as a decision-support resource that encourages growers and applicators to follow best management practices while emphasizing a simple but critical message: read and follow the label. He discusses the extensive scientific research behind pesticide labels and why the phrase "the label is the law" remains one of the most important principles in crop protection. The conversation explores the essential role pollinators play in agriculture, including their contribution to approximately one-third of the food we consume and more than 75% of the world's flowering plants. Mike also addresses common misconceptions surrounding pollinator health and explains how factors such as pests, diseases, habitat loss, weather events, and invasive species often have a greater impact on bee populations than many people realize.Listeners will learn about stewardship practices for treated seed and foliar applications, the importance of proper equipment calibration, spray drift management, and the growing use of technology to improve application accuracy. Mike also shares insights into Florida's Managed Pollinator Protection Plan (MP3), a voluntary program that helps growers and beekeepers communicate effectively to protect pollinators while maintaining crop production. The discussion also highlights a new concern for beekeepers across the United States—the invasive yellow-legged hornet—which has recently been detected in the Southeast and poses a significant threat to honey bee populations.Throughout the episode, Mike emphasizes that food security depends on responsible crop protection practices and collaboration among growers, applicators, beekeepers, registrants, and regulators. The result is a practical conversation about how agriculture continues to improve stewardship while producing the food, fiber, and specialty crops consumers depend on every day.To learn more about the BeSure! A Quick Note to Listeners: Before this week’s interview, Will Parker and Jen Schwanke take some time to answer a listener question. This week’s question is: What is the difference between procedures and systems? Listen in to hear their response! Meet Jamie Meade: With a career spanning over 35 years in education, Jamie Meade is dedicated to positive change and impact in our nation's education systems, working to advance academic achievement, growth, and well-being for our nation's youth. Jamie began her career as a high school English teacher in the rural Appalachian region of Ohio, and her passion led her to leadership roles in the school and district-level. Jamie has also served in regional school improvement services with the Ohio Department of Education and as Vice President at Battelle for Kids. For more than a decade, Jamie has done extensive research in the science of Hope—and why it matters for students, staff, education leaders, and communities. The Science of Hope: Jamie has made herself a student of hope, and has learned a great deal how we can focus on hope as a tool for leading, teaching, and learning. In this interview, Jamie explains that hope is different from wishful thinking, and walks us through the science of the brain— and where hope actually lives in our minds. Unlike “wishing” (which is passive), real hope is an active, strategic cognitive process. Neuroscience shows that hope is a skill that can be practiced. The more we choose hopeful thoughts, the more we physically rewire our brains to build capacity for resilience. The GPA of Hope: Jamie also introduces C.R. Snyder's Hope Theory framework: Goals: A vision for a future that is better than today. Pathways: The ability to identify multiple routes to reach those goals and navigate obstacles. Agency: The belief in one’s own ability and the mental energy to pursue those pathways. Building Hope Among Students: Students are often stuck in the downward spiral of losing hope, which often starts with anger , moves to despair, and ends in apathy. As Jamie says, “Don't misdiagnose hopelessness as laziness. Apathy is the final stage of a depleted spirit.” Teachers and staff are key factors in increasing student hope. Look for staff who bring energy, share their power, and get students excited about the future. Hope is a gift that can be shared. A student who has lost hope can borrow it from a teacher, but only if that teacher has it to spare. This applies to leaders and their staff as well. Episode Summary: In this episode of the Solar Maverick Podcast, Benoy speaks with Bill Taylor, CEO and owner of DCE Solar, about his 17-year journey building one of the solar industry's most resilient racking and construction companies. Bill shares how DCE Solar grew from a racking supplier into a group of businesses spanning racking systems, construction services, engineering and design, carports, ground mounts, rooftop systems, and single-axis trackers for solar projects across the United States. The conversation covers how Bill has navigated the "solar coaster" through financial discipline, a strong company culture, and a focus on quality and long-term customer relationships rather than competing purely on price. Bill and Benoy also dig into the technical side of racking and tracker design for challenging terrain and cold climates, DCE's exclusive U.S. partnership with Spain's Axial Structures, and why AI-driven data center growth is making reliable power access more critical than ever for the US''s energy strategy. Biographies Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy, solar developer and consulting firm, and a strategic advisor to multiple cleantech startups. Over his career, Benoy has developed over 100 MWs of solar projects across the U.S., helped launch the first residential solar tax equity funds at Tesla, and brokered $50 million in Renewable Energy Credits (“REC”) transactions. Prior to founding Reneu Energy, Benoy was the Environmental Commodities Trader in Tesla's Project Finance Group, where he managed one of the largest environmental commodities portfolios. He originated REC trades and co-developed a monetization and hedging strategy with senior leadership to enter the East Coast market. As Vice President at Vanguard Energy Partners, a large solar and storage construction firm, Benoy crafted project finance solutions for commercial-scale solar portfolios. His role at Ridgewood Renewable Power, a private equity fund with 125 MWs of U.S. renewable assets, involved evaluating investment opportunities and maximizing returns. He also played a key role in the sale of the firm's renewable portfolio. Earlier in his career, Benoy worked in Energy Structured Finance at Deloitte & Touche and Financial Advisory Services at Ernst & Young, following an internship on the trading floor at D.E. Shaw & Co., a multi billion dollar hedge fund. The Big Unlock · Julie Demaree, VP, Chief Technology and Digital Innovation Officer, St. Mary's Healthcare In this episode, Julie Demaree, Vice President and Chief Technology and Digital Innovation Officer at St. Mary’s Healthcare, shares a pragmatic approach to digital transformation in rural healthcare, where innovation is driven by operational realities rather than technology hype. A former physician assistant turned technology executive, Julie argues that successful innovation begins with culture, governance, and clinician engagement, not new tools. She discusses how St. Mary's has improved patient safety and clinician experience by rethinking clinical decision support, reducing alert fatigue through careful curation, and involving frontline clinicians in governance decisions. Julie also highlights the importance of optimizing existing technology before investing in new solutions, noting that many organizations overlook capabilities already available within their EHRs. Julie sees significant potential for automation and agentic AI to reduce administrative burden, improve patient access, and help lean teams operate more effectively. She emphasizes that AI adoption must be accompanied by strong governance, user education, and critical thinking. Her message is clear: innovation is not about adding more technology, it's about solving the right problems, eliminating unnecessary work, and building systems that better support patients, clinicians, and communities. Since its emergence in 2014, the Wagner Group operated as the Kremlin's shadow army, deploying mercenaries across Africa and the Middle East. It gave Vladimir Putin plausible deniability, expanding Moscow's geopolitical influence by propping up leaders through military assistance and securing Moscow's economic interests through weapons deals and access to natural resources. UN experts and human rights organizations accused the mercenaries of disappearances, torture, executions, mass graves, rape, and pillaging. Three years ago this week, its financier and leader Yevgeny Prigozhin launched a failed rebellion. He then died an untimely death, and Putin's security services moved to assert direct control of the paramilitary. This week, Sasha sits down with expert Candace Rondeaux to discuss Wagner's successor, Africa Corps, which has kept the expeditionary force in Africa and Ukraine. The author of Putin's Sledgehammer: The Wagner Group and Russia's Collapse into Mercenary Chaos, she discusses Africa Corps' struggles and conquests as it helps keep Putin's war machine churning. Freedom Summer didn't end in 1964 — it lives in every classroom, every protest, every young person who picks up a book and sees themselves as their own liberator. In this conversation, Dr. David J. Johns sits down with his sister and colleague Dr. Brittany Packnett Cunningham — strategist, educator, Webby Award-winning host of UNDISTRACTED, and Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of the Children's Defense Fund — to trace the direct line from Mississippi 1964 to the urgent work of this summer. They go deep on who actually carried Freedom Summer — young people and everyday Black Mississippians who risked everything for the audacity of a vote — and how Marian Wright, present on those same voter registration lines, took what she saw and built what would become CDF Freedom Schools, now serving upwards of 12,000 students every summer. Dr. Brittany explains why Freedom Schools are as much an intervention for the whole family as they are for the child — and why, in a moment when Roots has been banned in the same county where Alex Haley bought the farm that bears its legacy, we cannot afford to lose the recipes. The conversation moves into UNDISTRACTED — the Meteor Network flagship that Dr. David is proud to be part of as a correspondent this season — and what it means to build a platform where the questions are better and the community is ready to wrestle with them. And it closes with the ecosystem that connects it all: State of the People, Signal LIVE, All Roads Lead South, and Freedom Summer 2026 — a season-long drumbeat of mobilization, education, and local organizing rooted in the same soil as 1964.This is not a closed chapter. How to communicate with impact when the stakes are high.Communication isn't about getting information out. It's about making sure it gets through. In an era of fragmented attention and endless platforms, the challenge isn't finding ways to speak—it's finding ways to connect.According to Farnaz Khadem, Vice President of University Communications at Stanford, great communicators start with three questions: What's the goal? Who's the audience? And what does the data tell us? Whether guiding a university through a crisis, helping experts share their ideas with broader audiences, or deciding where a story should be told, she believes effective communication centers around understanding people. "People want to know what's actually happening," she says. "And if what is happening is you don't know what is happening, you have to tell people you don't know."In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Khadem joins host Matt Abrahams to discuss the importance of preparation, transparency, and active listening when communicating during uncertainty. From navigating the opportunities and risks of AI to crafting stories that create genuine connection, she shares practical lessons for building trust, adapting to changing audiences, and communicating effectively when the stakes are highest.Episode Reference Links:Farnaz KhademEp.22 Under Pressure: How to Communicate Clearly and Timely During a Crisis Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:38) - Communication Fundamentals (03:58) - Choosing the Right Channel (05:38) - Building Communication Networks (06:50) - Coaching Better Communicators (08:44) - Crisis Preparation (10:47) - Crisis Response (12:40) - The Power of Storytelling (14:28) - AI in Communications (17:29) - The Final Three Questions (24:23) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost.To see what Scribe could look like for your organization, head to scribe.how/thinkfast and mention Think Fast for your first month of Scribe Capture free.

At the Eurelectric Power Summit 2026 in Helsinki, Laurent had the opportunity to sit down with Catherine MacGregor, CEO of ENGIE and Vice President of Eurelectric, for a wide-ranging discussion on the key issues shaping Europe's energy future.  We began with the themes at the heart of Eurelectric's agenda this year: security of supply, affordability, competitiveness, and the challenges and opportunities created by the rapid growth of data centres.  One of the most striking insights from our conversation was that Europe does not have an electrification technology problem — it has an electrification coordination problem. This was also the central conclusion of the report Power Couples: Enhancing Industrial Competitiveness through Electrification, launched by Eurelectric and Accenture at Power Summit 2026. The report finds that electrification projects rarely fail because technology is unavailable. Instead, they stall when power economics, grid access, infrastructure delivery, financing structures, and industrial investment timelines are not aligned. The proposed solution is a new delivery model: “Power Couples”, bringing together industrial players, utilities, technology providers and capital partners to accelerate deployment at scale.  We also reflected on ENGIE's remarkable transformation under Catherine's leadership over the past five and a half years. The company's strategy has been defined by two parallel moves: more than €15 billion of divestments from fossil and legacy assets, alongside concentrated investments in renewables, networks, batteries, and regulated infrastructure — all while maintaining strong financial discipline, with net debt-to-EBITDA around 3.  The results have been impressive. Since 2021, ENGIE has delivered the strongest risk-adjusted equity performance among major European utilities, combining substantial dividend distributions with significant share-price appreciation. With an annualised IRR of roughly 20.5% since January 2021, ENGIE has outperformed the net returns of many leading global infrastructure investors, effectively delivering private-equity-style returns with public-market liquidity.  Our discussion also covered ENGIE's leadership in power purchase agreements (PPAs), its support for 24/7 Scope 2 accounting, the recent acquisition of UK Power Networks, progress in EV charging infrastructure, and its fully integrated strategy for data centre development.  Finally, we explored ENGIE's investment plans for the years ahead and the broader structural shift underway across the energy system: the continued transition from molecules to electrons.    Eurelectric Report: Power Couples https://www.eurelectric.org/publications/industrial-electrification-power-couples/

This week, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the US and Iran was signed by President Donald Trump after the G7 wrapped up at the Palace of Versailles. The agreement implements a 60-day ceasefire and creates a framework for further negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions and other outstanding issues. As more details emerged about the plan during the week, critics on both sides of the aisle accused the Trump administration of "appeasement" and giving Iran too much. One of those critics was a key member of the first Trump administration: former Vice President Mike Pence. The former Vice President joined the FOX News Rundown's host Dave Anthony just hours before the President put his signature on the MOU to discuss his concerns about it. While he praised the President's efforts to weaken the regime, he is worried that this deal gives Tehran the feeling that they were not defeated. Pence, who also wrote the new book, What Conservatives Believe: Rediscovering the Conservative Conscience, voiced his concerns about some in the Republican party who are straying away from the party's core values. Finally, Pence discussed the possibility of running for President in 2028. This week, Scott sat down with cohost emeritus and Lawfare Research Director Alan Rozenshtein, Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien, Lawfare Public Service Fellow Julia Curlee, and Lawfare Contributing Editor and Vice President of Research, Security and Defense at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs Ariane Tabatabai, to talk through the week's big national security news stories, including:“Fission Accomplished.” After nearly four months of war, the United States and Iran have reached a deal to end the conflict—with Trump declaring it “complete” and authorizing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz ahead of a formal signing ceremony set for June 19 in Switzerland. But the agreement leaves enormous questions unresolved, from the fate of Iran's enriched uranium to sanctions relief to whether the ceasefire extends to Israel's campaign in Lebanon. Is this the durable peace Trump claims, or a fragile pause papering over the hardest issues?“Model Misbehavior.” Days after Anthropic publicly released its powerful new Claude Fable 5 model, the Commerce Department imposed export controls barring any foreign national—inside or outside the U.S.—from accessing it, forcing the company to disable the model worldwide. The administration says Anthropic recklessly refused to fix a dangerous jailbreak; Anthropic says it was a narrow, non-serious vulnerability and the order is a misunderstanding. What does this episode tell us about the government's expanding use of export controls on AI—and its increasingly adversarial relationship with one of the country's leading labs?“Bad Vibrations.” In one of her final acts as Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard rescinded two Biden-era intelligence assessments that had cast doubt on whether a foreign adversary was behind “Havana Syndrome,” the mysterious ailments afflicting U.S. spies and diplomats. Gabbard's office says the prior assessments cherry-picked intelligence to support a predetermined conclusion; critics worry about a politically motivated rewrite of analytic findings on the way out the door. What should we make of this last-minute reversal, and what does it mean for the future of the Havana syndrome debate—and Gabbard's legacy as DNI?In object lessons, Tyler remains steadfast in his mission to ensure that no one ever runs out of podcasts, this week plugging A Whole Other Country, a discovery from Tribeca Festival Audio. Alan embraces peak dad-tech with his bbq upgrade—a new, after-market temperature controller. Scott savors a delightfully spicy Supreme Court dust-up in FS Credit Opportunities Corp. v.
