SEASON 4 EPISODE 31: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Do you want to hear the real lesson of this week’s Democratic landslide? Mamdani ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Sherrill ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Spanberger ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Prop 50 won on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Hey, you can do both at the same time! Who knew? Not difficult. Easy to remember. Useful on all occasions. Worked in New York, where they elected a socialist when only a quarter of the voters say they are socialists. Worked in Virginia, where they elected as governor an ex-congresswoman born in Jersey. Worked in Jersey, where they elected as a governor an ex-congresswoman born in Virginia. Money Issues, and Trump Equals Death. Useful on all occasions. It’s a floor wax AND a dessert topping. Of course the context is just as much fun as the lesson. That's becauseTrump not only doesn’t realize he got the S kicked out of him, but he doesn’t realize he’s already forced himself to both end the government shutdown and lose the government shutdown. “Trump wasn’t on the ballot,” Trump screamed. “And ‘Shutdown’… were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections...” Ah, poor Trump. Metaphorically, Trump not only was on the ballot - every ballot but he was on the ballot in the worst possible way. Everybody could vote no on him, but it was almost impossible to vote YES. The lame duck politician’s worst nightmare. And right now no duck is lamer than Trump. Democrats: run on your money issues and that Trump equals death. It’s a floor wax and a dessert topping! ALSO: No, I am not going to sanewash Dick Cheney, even after his passing. Yes, at the end, when it was loyalty to the country or Trump he chose the country and it's good to finish strong. But I will still remember him for that 9/11-Iraq exploitation thing. And I am still proud that - as you'll hear - I pissed him off enough as Vice President for him to publicly clap back. B-Block (30:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Roger Stone, who helped advance the deplorable Laura Loomer, is now shocked she's deplorable. Similarly Ben Shapiro, who helped sell Tucker Carlson's evil to the far right, is now shocked he's evil. And I-Never-Winsome Earle-Sears and scabby Fox host Charlie Hurt think Barack Obama not voting for her when he voted for Kamala Harris is hypocritical (so...Earle-Sears voted for Kamala, and Hurt voted for Spanberger?) C-Block (40:30) SPORTSBALLCENTER: You probably aren't interested in my thoughts on the latest new selection committee and the latest eight nominees for baseball's Hall of Fame (though I have many of them). But you may be entertained by the sagas of the previous selection committees and the legend of how the ex-players on them used to cast "courtesy votes" for their old buddies and one year Ted Williams and the others screwed up and accidentally cast way too many of them for a not-so-Hall-of-Famish catcher named Rick Ferrell and he actually got elected.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

2025 marks 50 years of the Biological Weapons Convention. Back in 1975, the treaty entered into force, and by banning biological weapons worldwide, it became the first global treaty to prohibit a particular weapon of war. The Biological Weapons Convention is widely adopted — 189 States Parties have pledged to never develop, produce, stockpile, or use biological weapons. And thankfully, these weapons have not featured much in modern conflict. But over the last 50 years, profound advances in the life sciences and bio research have emerged which, according to my guest today, pose a distinct challenge to this treaty. Jaime Yassif is the Vice President for Global Biological Policy and Programs at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a nonprofit global security organization focused on reducing nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats. We kick off by discussing the history of this treaty, including why the time was right 50 years ago for it to come together. We spend most of our conversation, though, exploring the ways in which this treaty might be strengthened to adapt to a changing landscape of potential biological weapons risks today. This episode is produced in partnership with Lex International Fund, a philanthropic initiative dedicated to strengthening international law to solve global challenges. It's part of our ongoing series highlighting the real-world impact of treaties on state behavior, called "When Treaties Work."

Arch-war criminal and former Vice-President Dick Cheney has died. A consummate DC insider who was White House Chief-of-Staff, Defense Secretary, CEO of Halliburton, and Vice President, he shaped and reshaped the GOP and the conservative movement. Responsible for the Global War on Terror and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, he promoted the invasion of Iraq based on blatant lies. Brown University estimated over 4.5 million people died in the post-9/11 forever wars. He also changed government policy on "enhanced interrogation" (i.e. torture) and mass surveillance. And despite his redemption by liberals in recent years because of his opposition to Donald Trump, his politics and polities paved the way for Trump. In this episode, we discuss Dick Cheney, Trump and fanboy liberals redeeming Cheney. Today, we don't mourn Dick Cheney, only his victims. ----------------------------

On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Chris Mondini, Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement and Managing Director of Europe for ICANN, and Dusty Trevino, CEO of Dot Vegas. We will learn how top-level domains are created and what domains like Dot Vegas can do to help a brand stand out. Our conversation is informative, educational, and will give you a whole new perspective on your brand's Internet address. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How top-level domains (TLDs) are created and why the addressing system of the Internet matters Why distinctive TLDs, like Dot Vegas, offer a strategic advantage for destination branding and marketing What it takes to register your own top-level domain, including the technical, financial, and organizational requirements necessary How geographic domains (such as .vegas, .nyc, and .brussels) can strengthen place identity and foster trust Why cities and entrepreneurs collaborate in launching city-based TLDs, and how community endorsement is essential for successful implementation How adopting new TLDs can make brands more memorable to prospective visitors, and help organizations stand out from the crowd Demystifying Top-Level Domains A memorable web address is more than just a convenience, it's an essential tool for branding, discoverability, and trust. Chris Mondini, Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement and Managing Director of Europe for ICANN, and Dusty Trevino, CEO of Dot Vegas, discuss how TLDs like .vegas, .paris, and .nyc can be invaluable assets for destination marketers, tourism professionals, and place branding experts. Most consider internet domains an afterthought, but as Chris explains, they're the backbone of online connectivity. The Internet isn't a single global network—it's tens of thousands of independently operated networks that agree to connect using common protocols and a shared addressing system. Fifteen years ago, there were only a handful: .com, .net, .org, and so on. Today, there are TLDs for cities (.nyc, .paris), concepts (.guru, .xyz), and more, opening new doors for personalized branding and community-building online. The Dot Vegas Story Dusty offers an inside look into operating Dot Vegas, which shows how a custom domain can amplify a destination's brand. Unlike some city domains, .vegas is globally accessible; anyone can register, regardless of residency. This flexibility enables local businesses, tour operators, and organizations worldwide to associate themselves with the Vegas brand, strengthening their ties to the city's renowned excitement and appeal. Why Top-Level Domains Matter for Marketers A custom TLD isn't just a vanity URL. Operating a TLD means running a piece of internet infrastructure and directly controlling your digital address, data queries, policies, and trust signals. For marketers, there are lots of benefits: Brand Identity: A city or region TLD immediately communicates place and can reinforce local pride. Discoverability: Words like "weddings.vegas" are memorable, making campaigns more effective and easier to recall. Trust & Security: A TLD operated or endorsed by local government or a trusted entity assures users of authenticity—crucial for e-commerce, municipal services, and tourism. Data Insights: TLD operators gain visibility into traffic and usage, supporting more targeted digital strategies. If you see ".yourcity," you can trust you're connecting with the real brand. Top-level domains aren't just technical jargon; they're strategic marketing tools that can transform destination branding, promote community engagement, and build trust with global audiences. Higher education can't keep teaching “just in case” knowledge. In an era where technology evolves faster than curriculum, universities must align directly with industry needs — and that's exactly what Paul Lavoie is doing at the University of New Haven. In this episode of The TechEd Podcast, host Matt Kirchner sits down with Paul, the university's Vice President of Innovation and Applied Technology and former Chief Manufacturing Officer for the State of Connecticut. Together, they explore what it means to build higher education that works like industry: agile, applied, and focused on real development rather than theory. From the creation of the new Center for Innovation and Applied Technology to rethinking how students, employers, and universities collaborate, Lavoie shares a bold vision for transforming education into an engine for workforce growth and innovation that doesn't require reinventing the wheel. In this episode:Why “just-in-case” education no longer delivers ROI for students or employersWhat happens when universities start acting like R&D partners instead of ivory towersWhy educators need to stop reinventing solutions when proven models already existWhy every institution of education should be clear on its unique value propHow the University of New Haven is creating students who are “better than ready” for the future of work3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Higher education must shift from “just-in-case” to demand-driven, industry-led learning. Paul Lavoie argues that curriculum taught “just in case” students might need it no longer delivers value. Instead, universities must align programs with real industry demand and measurable workforce outcomes.2. Education must stop reinventing the wheel and instead, leverage proven models to solve common problems. Too often, educators spend time rebuilding solutions that already exist instead of adopting proven models. By learning from industry and collaborating across institutions and states, schools can accelerate innovation and maximize impact.3. The new Center for Innovation and Applied Technology is a unique focus on the development side of R&D, using students to solve business problems. This hands-on R&D hub is designed to give students real-world experience in advanced manufacturing, robotics, AI, cybersecurity and other emerging tech. But instead of researching these technologies, students will be applying them to solve real challenges faced by industry partners.Resources in this Episode:Learn more about the University of New Haven's Center for Innovation and Applied TechnologyNational Center for Next Gen ManufacturingFind more on the episode page! https://techedpodcast.com/lavoie/We want to hear from you! The November 4 edition of the AgNet News Hour was a celebration of California citrus, featuring Jesse Silva, Vice President of Kings River Packing, who joined hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill to share an upbeat outlook on the 2024–25 season. The longtime Central Valley leader, now in its eighth generation of family farming, is off to what Silva called “a high-quality, high-demand year” for California citrus. Silva explained that Kings River Packing and its affiliated companies, including Cobblestone Fruit and Gyra Packing, are operating at full capacity across their four facilities in Sanger, Reedley, and Orosi. “We're running 24/7 right now,” he said. “The fruit looks great, and the market is strong — especially for early navels, lemons, and mandarins.” Founded in the 1860s, Kings River's legacy began when the Hazelton family planted the first orange trees in Fresno County. Nearly 150 years later, Silva said the ninth generation is preparing to carry that heritage forward. “We're still family owned and operated, and that's something we're very proud of,” he said. “Every box we ship represents decades of hard work, and our goal is to keep that tradition alive.” Silva described a season that's running ahead of schedule thanks to ideal growing conditions in both the desert and Central Valley regions. Grapefruit, lemons, and mandarins from the desert gave the company an early jump, and now the focus shifts northward. “Our early navels are maturing beautifully,” he said. “The sugar is coming on strong, the color is fantastic, and consumers are ready for California fruit.” He also reported that this year's market fundamentals look favorable for growers. “The quality is high, imported volumes were lower than expected, and demand is strong both domestically and internationally,” Silva said. “Right now, pricing is solid across navels, mandarins, and lemons. The retailers are excited.” Beyond the fields, Silva discussed the company's continued investment in organic citrus, now entering its third full year of production. “It's still a niche, but it's growing steadily,” he said. “We're proud to be a year-round organic citrus supplier in oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.” Silva credited early fall rains for boosting color and size without harming the crop. “The timing was perfect,” he said. “Rain improves sizing, and the cool nights are bringing on that rich orange color everyone loves.” Papagni and McGill also highlighted Kings River's partnership with Farmsco USA, which sources citrus from Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Morocco to complement California's growing season. “It keeps our partners stocked year-round,” Silva explained. “It's about consistency — giving our customers California quality all twelve months of the year.” As the holidays approach, Silva encouraged Californians to buy local. “When you see Kings River on the label, you're supporting family farmers,” he said. “That means a lot to us — and it means you're getting the best citrus anywhere.”

What does cybersecurity look like beyond Earth's atmosphere? That's the question at the heart of this conversation with Kristiina Omri, Vice President of Special Programs at CybExer Technologies, and Aare Reintam, the company's COO. We met in Tallinn on the eve of the Software Defined Space Conference to explore how Estonia, in collaboration with the European Space Agency, is helping define the future of space cybersecurity through the world's first Space Cyber Range. The story begins unexpectedly—with a childhood memory of marmalade in a tube, the same kind sent to Soviet astronauts in orbit. For Aare Reintam, that small detail became the first spark of fascination with space, one that decades later evolved into CybExer's partnership with ESA. Together they've created a digital testing environment where satellites, ground stations, and communication protocols can be stress-tested for cyber resilience long before launch.  It's a bold move in an era when satellites underpin everything from GPS and precision farming to air travel and climate observation, yet often rely on decades-old technology vulnerable to attack. Kristiina Omri explains how the Space Cyber Range replicates real-world missions, allowing engineers and analysts to train under simulated attack conditions that feel indistinguishable from their actual control systems. The range combines the precision of digital twins with the competitive intensity of cyber exercises, preparing teams for threats that can ripple from orbit to everyday life on Earth. The conversation covers everything from the growing space-debris crisis to the global shortage of cybersecurity professionals, and the urgent need to blend space engineering with cyber education. We also discuss the deeper strategic implications. What happens when quantum computing enters the battlefield? How should Europe prepare for the convergence of cyber and kinetic threats in orbit? And what lessons can be learned from Estonia's leadership in NATO cyber defense as it extends that expertise to the stars? By the end of the discussion, one theme stands out clearly: the future of cybersecurity is no longer confined to our planet. From digital twins to orbital trust networks, CybExer Technologies and the European Space Agency are proving that the next frontier for cyber readiness lies in space itself.
