This week, The CMO Podcast is serving up a rich and flavorful conversation as Jim sits down with Jessica Padula, Vice President of Marketing and Sustainability for Nespresso USA. Nespresso, part of Swiss-based Nestlé, started in the 1980s with one bold idea: that anyone should be able to brew a café-quality coffee at home. Fast forward to today, and that idea has become an $8 billion global brand, with more than 13,000 employees across 81 countries, over 800 boutiques in 500+ cities, and a booming direct-to-consumer business.Jessica has been brewing her own journey at Nespresso for nearly a decade. For the past two and a half years, she's been leading both marketing and sustainability—two roles that blend perfectly like coffee and crema. A Boston University grad, Jessica first cut her teeth on the agency side, working with powerhouse Procter & Gamble brands, before bringing her passion for brand building and purpose to Nespresso. In this lively conversation, Jim and Jessica dive into her career journey, the art of balancing growth with sustainability, and how Nespresso continues to innovate without losing sight of its values. Grab your favorite cup and tune in—it's a coffee talk you won't want to miss.---This week's episode is brought to you by Deloitte.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode, I speak with Chris Carrano, Vice President of Strategic Research at Venn by Two Sigma.Chris has had a rare vantage point in the world of factors — spanning smart beta, long/short hedge funds, and risk modeling — and that experience has shaped a thoughtful view of what factors really are and how they can be practically used.We dive into the philosophy and design behind Venn: why it uses just 18 orthogonalized factors, how it blends Lasso and OLS to reduce overfitting, and why it prioritizes interpretability over complexity. We also tackle messy real-world challenges: how to analyze private markets with sparse data, how to trust synthetic return streams, and where to draw the line when using monthly snapshots that embed structural portfolio shifts. Finally, we explore what it means to make factor results actionable—whether through stress testing, residual interpretation, or portfolio diagnostics. Please enjoy my conversation with Chris Carrano.

This Labor Day, President Trump is touting a manufacturing comeback. He's highlighting auto companies and big-name corporations investing more in U.S. production. But critics argue many of those plans were in motion before he took office, and union leaders accuse him of being the “biggest union buster.” Presidential historian and senior fellow at the Ronald Reagan Institute, Tevi Troy, joins the Rundown to break down the politics of labor and what's next for unions in America. For those with spinal cord injuries, it seems your entire life can change in an instant. After her freak skiing accident decades ago, Amanda Boxtel is doing better than just getting by. She's become one of the first people to start using an exoskeleton for mobility and has founded Bridging Bionics—a nonprofit that aims to provide free or affordable mobility solutions so that those who are paralyzed may walk again. Three years ago, Razib recorded two podcasts with two immigration experts on different sides of the issue, Alex Nowrestah and Jason Richwhine. While Nowrasteh, who works for the libertarian Cato Institute as Vice President for Economic and Social Policy Studies, supports higher levels of legal immigration, Richwine, a Resident Scholar at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), favors lower levels of inflows into the US. The initial pair of podcasts was recorded in the midst of the massive increase in immigration that occurred after the loosening of the pandemic-era controls, resulting in the highest proportion of the foreign-born since the turn of the 20th century. Though the Biden administration tightened controls in its last year, the swell of illegal immigration resulted in a backlash that fueled the re-election of Donald Trump to the presidency and a turn in policy toward restriction. Recently, Razib recorded two conversations with Nowrestah and Richwine, revisiting the topic in 2025, and after three years of policy shifts. Today, Razib talks to Nowrasteh about the record of the Biden administration, the pivot occurring in the first year of the Trump administration, and where he sees the Republicans going in the future. Nowrasteh addresses the reality that the Democratic administration's lack of interest in controlling illegal flows resulted in anger and frustration at migration in general, and emphasizes the importance of borders and rules in allowing for legal immigration. Razib and Nowrasteh also discuss the controversy over H1-Bs, the role that skilled immigration plays in buttressing American power, and the conflicts on the Right regarding how immigration policy relates to geopolitics. They also explore the relationship between immigration and population, and how both connect to urban policy and economic growth.

Episode Summary: America's ability to secure its interests, whether deterring conflict or fighting and wining, demands a robust Air Force. The current security environment will tolerate nothing less. The service has traditionally measured its prowess via capacity, capabilities, and readiness. The Air Force currently lags in each of these three areas. Want proof? The service's FY 2025 budget request sought to divest 250 aircraft, while only procuring 91. The FY 2026 request seeks to divest 340 aircraft, while only acquiring 76. It is essential that the Trump administration and Congress reverse the service's decline in capacity, capability, and readiness. In this episode, Lt. Gen. David Deptula, USAF (Ret.), JV Venable, and Robert “Otis” Winkler discuss these challenges and outline what needs to be done to reset the Air Force. JV just completed a major report on this topic, and the conversation centers around the top findings. The time for concerted action is now. This week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at ending cash bail in Washington D.C. and other jurisdictions around the country. He summarized the largely successful criminal justice reform policy like this: "They kill people and they get out." Well, it may come as a surprise (to no one) that this statement is… not accurate. All it means is that a person's release, before they stand trial, is NOT determined by how much money is in their wallet. The vice president sat down with USA TODAY White House Correspondent Francesca Chambers to share his thoughts on issues both controversial (the firing of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, the deployment of National Guard troops to American cities, the contentious White House meeting with President Vladimir Zelenskky back in February) and mundane (President Donald Trump's new White House décor and the engagement of Travis Kelce to superstar Taylor Swift) in this wide-ranging conversation. Francesca joins The Excerpt to share her takeaways and a few choice clips from the vice president. You can watch the full interview with Vice President JD Vance here. Please let us know what you think of this episode by sending a note to podcasts@usatoday.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Patrick opens with heartbreak, reading the U.S. Bishops’ response to the Minneapolis church shooting, then moves through the raw aftermath: a child’s shaken words, Mayor Frey’s press conference, and the overwhelming sadness gripping the Annunciation community. He questions the meaning behind public phrases like “thoughts and prayers,” tracing their use through pop culture and challenging listeners to go beyond slogans, turning attention to faith, conscience, and how Christians can respond authentically to suffering and violence. Voices from callers add urgency, raising concerns about mental health, media, and the roots of violence that stubbornly persist. Patrick shares the Statement of U.S. Bishops’ Vice President on Shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis (01:07) Audio: Young boy at Annunciation Church shooting describes what happened (02:27) Audio: Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey: "Anybody that is going to use this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community or any community has lost touch with a common humanity. We have to be operating not out of hate for any group, but out of a love for our children.” (04:41) Patrick comments on “Thoughts and Prayers” as a slogan (06:18) Matt - I thought that Father Cormack Burke's book on the connection between pornography and violence was good. Do you think that this is a plausible reason for these mass shootings? (36:43) Dave - I think there is a difference between a properly formed conscience and ill-informed conscience. How could be a conscience be that malformed? What kind of mortal sins would you have to commit? (43:43)
