For the Glory KC is back with the 127th episode of the show! Our long national nightmare is over! Sporting Kansas City have finally won a game. New interim coach Kerry Zavagnin is a perfect 1-0-0 and he got the best of Sporting KC's rival, St. Louis City SC. It put an exclamation point at the end of a tumultuous and emotional week for anyone in and around Sporting KC.Sheena and I work through the big moments of the game. From our pre-game emotions and expectations to Dejan Joveljic's breakout performance. We also talked about John Pulskamp stepping up on the night Tim Melia retired. There were post-game antics with Jake Davis and the St. Louis players as well as Jansen Miller shushing the road support. Considering he's from STL, it's even more endearing to local fans. The week wouldn't be complete without going back and reflecting on all the change and the news we got from Mike Illig and Kerry Zavagnin's pressers. Weaved into that conversation is a mini dive into my editorial about how ownership may have still botched the Peter Vermes firing. We honor Tim Melia on the week of his retirement (listen to Thad's exclusive podcast with Melia) and discuss a trade that snuck under the radar potentially for Sporting KC fans. Finally, the KC Current had the week off, but still made a bit of news on the international front and with five (!!) of the 11 players of the month coming from KC: LaBonta, Temwa, Cook, Debinha and Lorena. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including:The future of the Women's World Cup (USA & UK)The Des Moines Menace being bounced from the US Open CupAnd FC 25 jersey updates for SKC and the CurrentHere is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times):Sporting KC finally win, and soccer is fun again! - 6:46Mike Illig and Kerry Zavagnin pressers - 40:19SKC Round-up - 1:08:33KC Current Round-up - 1:13:44Digital Crawl - 1:16:04Upcoming GamesUSA vs. Brazil, Tues. Katie Arnold: Zen on the Run

Strides Forward

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2024 68:06

In 2016, elite ultra-distance trail runner and writer Katie Arnold experienced a traumatic river rafting accident that left her questioning whether or not she would ever be able to run again. This is the story of how Arnold healed after her accident and how that process helped her rediscover a pure joy of running and a magical return to racing. This happened over the period of time when Arnold was 46 to 48 years old. This episode was made on the occasion of the release of Arnold's second book, Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World. The book was just released April 16, 2024. To borrow the description that her publisher put out, “This book is a Zen study wrapped in a memoir that tells the story of a search for stillness by a woman born for wildness.” And it's an apt description. This book is exceptional. And this episode does focus on the same period of time that is covered in the book. Of course, Arnold's book goes into much more detail than she gets into in this episode, but in either case, the story covers the same period of time, roughly the two years between 2016 and 2018, beginning with Arnold experiencing a traumatic rafting accident through her process of healing. Arnold studies the teachings of Zen Buddhism and she practices Zen mediation. Weaved throughout Arnold's story is how her Zen practice manifests in this whole process. The story, as it is told here, focuses on the power of belief, participating in your own healing, and the interesting dynamic of achieving goals while not clinging to them—or put another way, staying with where you're at instead of focusing on the finish line.  Keep Up with Katie Arnold Instagram: @katiearnold Website: katiearnold.net Katie Arnold's books, Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World and Running Home: katiearnold.net/books Mentioned in This Episode Sarah Lavender Smith: Ultramarathon Trail Running Longevity: womensrunningstories.com/sarah-lavender-smith-transitioning-through-competitive-running-longevity Sarah Lavender Smith's website: sarahlavendersmith.com Sarah Lavender Smith's newsletter, Colorado Mountain Running & Living Sarah Lavender Smith book, The Trail Runner's Companion: A Step-by-Step Guide to Trail Running and Racing, from 5Ks to Ultras Music Credits Cormac O'Regan, of Playtoh Lidérc Bell, via Pixabay Rockot, via Pixabay penguinmusic, via Pixabay SergePavkinMusic, via Pixabay Coma-Media, via Pixabay chillmore, via Pixabay RoyaltyFreeMusic, via Pixabay Ways to Connect and Engage with Women's Running Stories Instagram: @womensrunningstories Instagram: @over50sub20_5k_project Facebook: facebook.com/WomensRunningStories Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/444164966663627 Website: womensrunningstories.com Email host Cherie: clouiseturner@gmail.com Women's Running Stories is a proud member of the Evergreen network: https://evergreenpodcasts.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome listeners. This is episode 2 of season 4 and I'm really glad you're here. You may notice that the podcast format has changed for this season as I'm sharing my story of buying a historic and haunted home in Lambertville NJ on the day of Covid lockdown. I tell this story as a means to inspire us all how to face and embrace the darkness within, how to sit in discomfort and to heal the ghosts of our past. Weaved throughout this season we will also discover the various ways spirit talks to us, and we'll talk to experts in the field of metaphysics, mediumship and other spiritual teachings. This episode I introduce you to the specifics of the house and the stories that began shortly after I moved in. Some that seem benign - huge spiders, bats in the bedroom, stolen items..but combined with the rest of the story, I believe you'll start to see the energy that is becoming palpable at the house. The found objects I either still have or have pictures of, and the dreams - the male energy present who violated me many times over - has become one of the main characters in my one-woman show and the screenplay. I hope you enjoy this storytelling, and I'd love to hear feedback. Oh, and please share it with your friends! Thanks for listening! Follow leah on IG, FB & TK @leahthemodernsage for more!

Welcome to the first episode of The Value Trapped Podcast, the podcast where private investors Bruce Packard and Mark Simpson discuss the UK small to mid-cap share market, including shares they own as well as shares they probably shouldn't own. Weaved into the conversation will be insightful nuggets of information on portfolio management, stock analysis and the macro landscape for the UK share market. Mark Simpson has been investing in individual stocks since 2003. Over the last decade, Mark has generated a 19% compound annual return following a Value methodology vs an FTSE All-Share Total Return Index that has returned less than 8% over the same period. He has achieved this out-performance by developing a strategy that plays to his unique strengths and overcomes his weaknesses, in particular finding practical ways to overcome behavioural biases. His book Excellent Investing describes this approach and how investors of all types can generate higher and more consistent returns by developing their own strategy that plays to their strengths and overcomes their weaknesses. Bruce Packard is a Financial Analyst, and a former equity research analyst who worked in the city specialising in the financial sector. He started his career at Credit Suisse followed by various other banks and stockbroking firms (Pali, Evolution, Seymour Pierce) before leaving, so that he had more freedom to analyse and invest in companies for his own portfolio. In 2008 he predicted the nationalisation of the UK banking industry. Bruce's investing style is a low-frequency, buy-and-hold strategy focused on quality. Bruce writes regularly for Share Pad, Money Week and his non-conformist thoughts on his own blog brucepackard.com.   Timestamps: 1:30 Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and the wider banking crisis. 8:55 Sylvania Platinum (SLP) and Tharisa Minerals (THS) 17:54 Arcontech Group (ARC) 22:18 The dark side of share tips and following them blindly. 27:57 Bank of Georgia (BGEO) and the political problems arising in Georgia 34:07 WANdisco (Wand) discussion 38:19 Closing thoughts and wrap up. Doing Gentle with an edge

First published on my blog on October 1, 2018. Read the post here → Presence. Closeness. Finding me. In your eyes. Seeing and being seen. In my yes. My no. Lucidity is kindness, as always. To breath; rebirthing, opening up, energies in flux. Loudly. Body contact. Hands caressing my body, soft as a feather. The strength of an arm holding me close. Letting my enjoyment be seen, heard. Speaking out loud, my inner wish. What I desire. Right now. With you and noone else. To speak. Be granted my wish. Speaking another. Granted, yet again. Daring to let go. Daring to let me ask for, be granted, receive. Revel. Simply being with it. Being with. Sensuality. Caresses. Not taking responsibility for anyone but me. I. Here. For me. Not you. You. Here for you. Not me. In the space in between, We are created. Multiple We's. Shifting. Growing. Weaved together, by laughter, eye contact, touch. Shares. Laughs. Truth and lies; more laughter. Frivolous and heartfelt, all at once. That which is significant, and that which is insignificant. Elemental massage. Like earth, fire, water, air, ether. Heavy. Earthed. Grounded. Powerful. Well needed. Surprised. Sweeter to receive than give, which gives me permission after the fact, for what I gave. Like a winter swim: tingling skin, awakened, alive. Blood flowing through my veins. Rippling, sparkling. A moment of grace. Softly, softly. Caressed by hair, by breath, by the outermost part of the fingertips. More, give me more! Caressed by energy, by the force field generated by closeness and presence, even without physical contact. There is so much more to us, we reach far beyond our physical bodies. The gift. That I do. Dare. Let myself. Give. Receive. The exquisite thrill, heartfelt and real, far from ABC. The amount of pleasure available to us in life, far beyond what I ever knew, dared, understood, thought myself able to. Beginning to understand. Bliss!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 10, 2022 74:30

Today we are talking about mutual aid. Why? Because I'm wondering if engaging in mutual aid might be a means for healing as well as personal and collective transformation.  See, one thing I frequently hear from people is that they feel powerless to change "the system." They don't know how we can possibly dismantle racism, capitalism, or the patriarchy. They feel like their personal efforts won't ever be enough. I disagree. I believe our personal efforts - our learning, our growing awareness, our shifting beliefs, the conversations we have with our partners and kids and friends, where we invest our money, where we shop or not, the questions we ask at our PTA meetings and places of work - DO make a difference. As we change, we can't help but influence those around us. Rev angel Kyodo Williams says “Without inner change there can be no outer change. Without collective change, no change matters.” So, it's not only our indivudal efforts, but also combined or collective efforts that I am learning can be the pathway for creating a new world. One that doesn't rely on competition, scarcity, urgency, and extraction of energy and labor from every person and plant and animal on the planet.  Think of it another way. Participating in collective change movements might just provide us with the real time "internship" we need to embody the information we are learning intellectually. It is one thing to read articles and share them on social media. It's another to put your coat on, leave the house on a weekend morning, and participate in direct action. It's one thing to read articles and books, it's another to join a community and support each other through mutual aid organizations. Perhaps it is in these spaces that our beliefs and fears can be challenged. Perhaps it is in these spaces of community action and community care that we can begin to experience some hope and believe that a new world order can be created. Together. Each of us matter. All of our small actions when put together do make a difference.  Do not believe the lie that we are powerless. There are more of us than there are of them.  I first learned about mutual aid during the pandemic. I mean, I imagine it was referenced in social work school - but I didn't understand its power or potential until after George Flloyd was murdered. Up until that point, I was not tapped into the networks of care happening right here in my own community. Again, humbling given that I am a social worker by training and trade. (Let this be a reminder that there's no shame in continuing to learn!) Mutual aid came to my awareness as people were organizing to support protestors in Portland in 2020-2021. I learned there were groups of people providing medical care, food, supplies, emotional support and more for front line protestors. I began to follow these groups on social media which led me to learning about other groups and organizations. My curiosity led me to Equitable Giving Circle and MxMBloc. It led me to individuals who were part of mutual aid movements providing support to people in need. Support like housing, food, transportation, bills, clothing, healthcare advocacy and more. Regular community members, like me, sharing their resources, money, time, gifts and talents to support those who had fallen through the cracks, who have been pushed to the margins, and/or on the front lines fighting for freedom and safety for all of us. I've also been learning how much of what ails us - feelings of disconnection, disillusionment, restlessness, depression, low-grade anxiety - can be related to believing the myth of the american dream. If you are like me, you were raised to believe (consciously or unconsciously) that if you did certain things - like getting good grades, going to college, getting a good job with benefits, starting a savings, getting married (to someone of the opposite sex of course), buying a home, having kids - you would be happy, successful, safe and at peace. You would have arrived! Yay! If that's true - why are there so many of us who followed that path that feel empty? Many reasons, yes - but one thread I keep following is how this myth of the american dream excludes the reality that we are all connected. That none of us got where we are alone. That we need each other. We are wired to be in relationship to each other. And because of this, we really cannot be at peace until we reconnt. Community connection and care is the antidote. This is where mutual aid comes in.  It's not charity.  Its not simply donating money. It's coming together to support and build a new way of being. is exactly what those in power tell us will never work. It's realizing that we are all in this mess and beauty together and that we need each other to find our way out. There is something deeply satisfying to our souls to be in community and reciprocity together. It is what those in power want us to believe will never work.  We disagree. As Margaret Mead said, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” A bit about our guests: AJ McCreary, a lifelong Portlander, a light bright or a very light Black woman, she is a community maverick, artist, curator, solo Mama, and change maker who has been working locally for 15 years. Before most titles and labels she is an artist, while being classically trained she has spent most of her artistic energy the last few years pouring into her son who is an art prodigy both visually and in dance, particularly ballet. Weaved in her activism work, it is always art, may it be flowers, abstract painting, photography, or charcoal drawings. She specializes in marketing strategies and fundraising through an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion lens; AJ has brought her skills to such organizations as Steps PDX, MxM Bloc, and Race Talks. AJ is one of the co-founders and is the ED of Equitable Giving Circle, an org that was born out of a desire to create a model of resource distribution that is not rooted in white supremacy and transactional giving. Her day to day work shows up loudly in her creative endeavors and tend to be an informed dance back and forth. AJ is deeply passionate about mutual aid and giving with no strings attached; her work in both the arts and through community is rooted in a desire to create beauty and sovereignty for everyone. AJ's bachelor in African American history and, equally as important, her lived experience coming from a working class, interracial family in North Portland has informed the full range of her work. Weaved into the conversation is virtue ethics as well as some history of the Church's relationship with the 'good drink' of ancient and modern times. As we prepared for this episode, we found a lot of interesting facts with such historicity. If you stick around until the end, we give you ingredients to make the "cocktail" of the day, as the book Drinking With The Saints recommends. Sit/stand, pour yourself a glass of your favorite drink, and enjoy this episode!Support the show

According to ockbaywaywampum.com, "wampum is the bead cut from the Quahog shell, its distinctive purple and white bands create beautiful natural diversity in the material, which can be smoothed to a high polished shine. The Quahog clam is geographically limited to the coastal waters between Maine and Long Island and was harvested for food and made into jewelry by the coastal peoples of the North-Eastern region. Culturally, Wampum was used as far south as the Carolinas, inland throughout the Great Lakes region, and north into the Canadian Maritimes. Small tubular beads were woven into 'belts' creating patterns by alternating between purple and white beads. These 'Wampum Belts' were often created as treaties between Tribal Nations and held value beyond the material, these beads also symbolized ongoing commitments to reciprocity. The Wampum bead was more than just a bead, it was also a promise, a memory, a sacred language of the past and future." Finally, we have reached the end—in more ways than one. This long series has been a labor of love. It took too long to produce, but ultimately, preparing and releasing each of these parts has been a gratifying, and even cathartic, experience. This last part, fittingly, is a meditation on endings, transitions, the death of things. And, most importantly, love—the love that accompanies all of it. We are meeting a time of many endings. The overly-complex systems that govern modern human life are meeting their inevitable demise. Centuries of human industrial activity has thrown the living systems of the Earth into disarray, and mass extinction ensues. The global climate is beyond repair, with enough heat baked into the system to guarantee several degrees of warming over the next several decades and centuries—a fact that cannot be contested. The question of human extinction is less a matter of "if" but more a matter of "when." If what is happening is happening, how, then, shall we live? This part seven is not meant to be overly bleak, but instead, sober and life-affirming. Weaved together with commentary, these six interviews reflect on the nature of the crises we are all living through right now, from the macro scale of this predicament to the deeply personal. And truly, what it all comes back down to, simply, is love—to love and to be loved in the face of our collective death, with all the grief and despair that accompanies it. Now the Global Head of Macro at Schonfeld Strategic Advisors, Colin Lancaster has always found top-down investing a fascinating discipline.  Trained as a lawyer but finding his way to the buy-side in the 1990's, Colin has spent the last 25 years in markets, allocating capital and building teams focused on macro.  Over his long career, he's traded through his share of vol events, each a challenging experience but also formative from a risk philosophy standpoint. Our conversation is a retrospective on the nature of risks that investors are forced to confront, how discontinuities in asset prices materialize and that ever elusive search for the positive carry hedge. Exploring seismic episodes of risk-off, we also spend time on the need to anticipate the inevitable and typically overwhelming response from the Central Bank and how, post both the GFC and now Pandemic, the Fed's interventions have increasingly crowded out the integrity of market price signals.  Lastly, we spend time on Colin's fast paced and insightful book, “FED UP!”, a project he undertook in 2020.  In it, Colin brings to life the frenetic, all-consuming world of global macro investing in which an unwelcome portfolio move is always a bad tweet away and decisions must be made quickly and based on a vastly incomplete information set.  Weaved into “FED UP!” is a statement of concern about the widening gap of wealth inequality in the US.  In a world in which asset prices are increasingly the outcome of Central Banks who mean well but whose actions vastly benefit some versus others, a certain rethink may be in order.  I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Colin Lancaster.DISCLAIMER: This e-mail and any attachments are for the confidential use of the intended recipient. By these definitions, media outlets, politicians, doctors, celebrities, rioters, judges, etc., that have used fear and intimidation to gaslight and terrorize the public in the name of health or social justice, and those who have donated or dropped charges that got violent thugs out of prison after riots, are all guilty of terrorism and should be prosecuted under the very law that was passed to make all citizens suspicious and able to be stripped of their rights at a moments notice. This is a long one so here is a bit of an outline: 1. Tuning in, like to stations of a radio 2. "I'm still an oak tree." 3. From spiritual seeker to finder: American Shamanism, Soul Retrieval, and Soul Loss  4. IFS is a form of Shamanism 5. Exposure to IFS- can't help loving it 6. Power animals 7. Self as the Shaman. Guides and Guidance. 8. God, Self, Parts or Guides? 9. Ed's information Last 20 plus minutes: 10. Parallels between IFS and Tibetan Buddhism 11. Spiritual Bypassing 12. The covert nature of giving our power away... co-dependency with Natalie Anne Murray

If you’ve ever looked at your personal relationships and thought wow – there is a pattern of unhappy here - there has to be a better way… you are not alone! Love + belonging are fundamental human needs; it bonds us all and in the absence of it we can feel utterly broken. However, there is a sinister underbelly of co-dependency that is rife in our society + suffocates our closest relationships… an extensive + multifaceted issue that touches every human on the planet. Weaved into Disney stories, Hollywood movies + your favourite tv series - co-dependency is subliminally sold to us as that ‘spark’ or ‘caring’ for those you love - but when faced with the truth that we are each ultimately responsible for our own happiness a deep, rippling confusion that ruptures our reality can leave us reeling. I brought in relationship expert Natalie Anne Murray for an in-depth chat, unpacking what co-dependency really means, how it shows up in our relationships + in what way we can start to remedy this rampant issue. Natalie specialises in helping women to recover from dysfunctional childhood and adult relationships to truly experience deep, lasting transformation… she helps women realign with integrity + power to authentically feel at peace with being true to themselves. As someone who identifies as a recovering people-pleaser, Natalie shares with us her co-dependency wakeup call + unpacks how childhood conditioning + ‘good girl manners’ contribute to the narrative we must ‘be nice’ in order to be loved. We also discuss the distinction between kindness, acts of service + co-dependent behaviour, plus she illuminates that this is not a linear process (like all deep personal development work) with support + emotional co-regulation we can cultivate a beautiful connection with our loved ones that is free of reactive triggers. Conversation with Berlin-based visual and performance artist Darko Dragicevic whom i’ve called over Skype to talk about his projects ‘failure in practice’, in which he not only explores our individual and collective relationship to failure within artistic practices, but also the broader cultural and historical definitions of value and success. This podcast was recorded during Covid19 period of social isolation and physical distancing, a unique historic moment for the art community, and i was interested to speak with Darko about what ‘failure’ might mean to us in this particular context. Weaved around this topic of failure is mine and Darko’s conversation about difficulty of slowing down and doing nothing; importance of empathy and thinking bigger than our personal needs; a need for art that is inclusive and collaborative and a value of which is not measured by income and finances; and why are we as the society excluding elderly people, their voices and wisdom from our everyday and art practices. Set in St. Paul between 1946 and Nov 1965, the novel follows the lives of 2 sisters, Eliza and Shannon Malone who are Irish “twins” and their close bond despite their different personalities. At 17 and 18, something traumatic happens to each sister that shapes the rest of their lives. This book covers realities and insights about motherhood, sisterhood, the stigma of the times for unwed mothers, illegitimate children and childless women. Weaved into the story, we also learn about a real life hero - Frances Perkins. The first woman appointed to the U.S. Cabinet during FDR’s presidency - she was a central figure to the New deal legislation including minimum wage laws, social security, unemployment compensation and child labor laws. This novel was inspired by Susan’s own experience (she spent the first days of her life in 1962 in the St. Paul Catholic Infants Home for unwed mothers & their babies and did not find out she was adopted until she was 46 years old).

Quite a while back, I learned about a very interesting little machine entitled the AMBIENT ADDITION which was a thesis from an MIT student named Noah Vawter The purpose of the machine was to transform everyday sounds into musical notes. He had made the valid point that with the whole 'i' revolution (iTunes, iPod, iPad, etc.), the 'i' represented isolation. I actually downloaded the whole thesis, and gave it a very good bit of my attention. For some reason, there have been no other sort of things like this, and it seems that this idea turned out to be nothing more than an idea. Granted, there are a few apps that I have on my (old) iPhone, like the INCEPTION app as well as RJDJ (if you have an iPhone, I highly suggest these; I believe that RJDJ is no longer a functioning app but I could be wrong). We can't escape the noise, but maybe we can take in what is there and process the good bits through our minds to keep us grounded.Another mention that I have to make is of a book called HEPCAT. I've read this to my kids for years. I'm fascinated by this story of how a jazz cat learns to hear each sounds of the city as separate musical entities, until his mind creates the symphony of each noise, not unlike seeing separate colors and forming a picture. I'm not kidding when I tell that I've taken the story of this book to heart. Obviously, we all have. I'm not at all alone in being fascinated and creating and purchasing music that lives and breathes field recordings.----more----So that leads to the purpose of this mix. Weaved within the soundscapes are field recordings of the concrete jungle. We must find the balance between the two, and enable our being to coexist with that which we have created. Don't fight against it; rather, immerse yourself in the underlying sonic texture that turns chaos into control. I give you, the listener, equal amounts of city structure balanced by the sweet escape of encompassing sounds. Yin and yang. Pleasure and pain. "Since nuclear weapons entered our world, everything has changed, whether we like it or not, ready or not." - Tilman RuffIn this beautifully sad and compelling essay 'Stumbling in the Dark, Reaching for the Light,' which is written and read by Tilman Ruff, we hear about the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons, which is our greatest existential challenge of all time. Weaved throughout a dark and emotive soundscape, Ruff tells us how our basic and most fundamental human rights are at risk while roughly 16,000 nuclear weapons still exist in the world.

The Soviet Union once boasted of its unparalleled political participation among youth. Belonging to outwardly political organizations, these Octobrists, Pioneers, and Komsomoltsy often represented the spirit of Soviet youth. They were engaged, well-informed, and enthusiastic about their country. In his book, Back To Our Future! History, Modernity, and Patriotism According to Nashi, 2005-2013, Ivo Mijnssen fills us in on a contemporary example of a large Russian youth organization. Nashi, or “Ours,” pledged its allegiance to Putin and to Russia. During its existence, the organization, though billed as a successful grassroots group, enjoyed a cozy relationship with the state.  It promised its members upward social mobility and a clearly defined, officially sanctioned worldview. A study of Nashi thus becomes both a study of political tendencies of Russian youth and the Russian government’s involvement in constructing and controlling ideologies. Mijnssen expertly dissects the Nashi organization and exposes its guiding ideas and driving mechanisms. Weaved into the memory of the WWII, Nashi claims to embody the spirit of a new generation ready to return Russia to greatness. The book centers around several key case studies that shine a light on the political moods of its members (and government). The book is anchored by an in-depth look at the once secretive Seliger camp, an annual retreat for Nashi organizers and activists. Nashi brochures, posters, songs, and slogans complement Mijnssen’s study. This is a must read for any experts of contemporary Russia.  Back To Our Future! is an important contribution to scholarship of modern Russian politics, which is rapidly becoming an important area of study. The future of Nashi and other youth organizations remains closely tied to the political ambitions of Russia. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Spaceman's Transmissions (Ambient Music Podcast)

I'm doing something out of the ordinary this time. This mix I actually did quite a while ago, it was probably the 3rd or so one that I did (although I made a couple of revisions). The mix is a bit shorter than others that I've done, but I had to find things from the artists that didn't completely melt one's face (sorry Yngwie!). I had some other artists on this in the initial phases (like Mr. Malmsteen, and some Nuno Bettencourt), but didn't want it to be a lot of notes or seem a bit shred-licious. I still wanted to make it pretty chill. That was a challenge. I'm a professional guitarist by trade. I've traveled and performed in 49 states (no Hawaii yet), and over 20 countries, all in the name of playing guitar. It has gotten me everywhere that I am, and the journey is not over. So it was a matter of time for me to put something like this out. I love guitar, and guitarists, and obsess over new gear, and a lot of volume. I really love ambient music because it is something that I don't do, and it's very calming and minimal. I suppose that I'm a bit envious that the really great ambient artists create a very dramatic feeling with so little.  I opened up with the amazing Jeff Beck. He was a huge influence to me getting into playing a more fusion approach with the Blow By Blow and Wired albums. I still wear them out and pick the notes apart. His Live At Ronnie Scott's DVD is a mind blower! If you've seen the movie Superbad or The 40 Year Old Virgin, you've heard the music of Lyle Workman. He also played for many years with Beck (not Jeff). He also toured a bit with Sting. The guy has heavy credits as a studio musician. The Dream Theater tune The Count Of Tuscany was the one that initially made me think that it would be neat to do a mix of stuff from sources that aren't ambient at all. My wife and I love them, and we actually saw them play live a few years ago (I think my wife was the only woman at the show! Ha!). Putting in Xanadu from Rush is also a no-brainer. I love the prog (going to see Symphony X in Baltimore in September, google them, they are pretty heavy!). Carl Verheyen is another really heavy player with an amazing amount of studio credit and chops. I actually had a lesson with him while on tour through California in 2008. He blew my mind, no doubt. I'm still working on what he showed me. David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) invented ambient stoner rock, and absolutely deserved a few spots in this mix. There's just something about British guitarists, and Jimmy Page is one of the best. Honestly, I only set out to learn Stairway To Heaven, and nothing more. But that planted the seed that set my life in motion for what I do now (by mistake?). Every next song I heard from Led Zeppelin was the best thing I heard in my life, and Jimmy's guitar army still amazes me. Well, I enjoyed making this mix (of course). I probably won't do another like this, I don't think. Enjoy! Turn on, tune in, rock out, THEN sleep...ambient-transmission.blogspot.comfacebook.com/tonepoetmusic
