In 1999, a handful of people gathered at a dusty Namibian airfield to meet two men flying weight-shift microlights around the world. One of them was Mike Blyth. Watching from the crowd was a boy who had never left the country, whose family couldn't afford much flying, and who had no real concept of where these men had come from — only that whatever they were doing, he wanted to do it too.Twenty-five years later, JP Schulze has flown around the world himself, built the first Sling High Wing off the line — designed by the same Mike Blyth — and become one of the most distinctive filmmakers in aviation.This one took a while to make happen. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: August 11, 2026Weird Darkness moves through three cases this episode: a decade-long haunting in rural Georgia that a university parapsychologist wired with scientific instruments, an eight-foot gem-hoarding creature that Appalachian locals have hunted for over a century, and a 1980 Baltimore art stunt that advertised a party for time travelers.It opens with the Wyrick haunting, which began in March of 1989 when three-year-old Heidi Wyrick walked in from the backyard of her family's new home on Swint Loop in Ellerslie, Georgia, and asked to keep swinging with an old man her mother couldn't see. The friend Heidi called Mr. Gordy matched James Gordy, a former caretaker of the property who had died in 1974, down to his silver hair, dark suit, and top hat; a second, wounded visitor she named Con matched Lon Batchelor, a man who lost his hand in a cotton gin accident and died in 1957. Before she could read, Heidi ran straight to Gordy's headstone in a cemetery of hundreds and later picked his face from a blind photo lineup. By 1993 the activity had turned violent, with a faceless dark figure, claw marks appearing on Heidi and her father Andy across consecutive nights, and a ribbon found wound around the throat of infant daughter Jordan, and the family brought in Dr. William Roll, a parapsychologist known from Unsolved Mysteries, who recorded an electromagnetic spike past 40 milligauss, elevated positive ions, and nearby seismic activity, then admitted he could not explain the scratches. Medium Amy Allan, later of The Dead Files, and a second psychic working separately placed the same entities in the same rooms, and the Wyricks finally left the house after Andy and Lisa found Heidi suspended upside down above her bed. The case appears in the Discovery Channel's 2002 film A Haunting in Georgia and the 2013 movie The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia, and in The Veil: The Heidi Wyrick Story, the firsthand account written by Heidi's aunt Joyce.From there the episode climbs into the Balsam Mountains of western North Carolina for the legend of the Boojum, a creature said to stand six to eight feet tall, covered in shaggy gray hair, with a disturbingly human face. According to Haywood County lore, the Boojum hoards the region's real gemstones – North Carolina is the only state that holds all four major precious gems, and the 1,869-carat uncut emerald pulled from the North American Emerald Mine in Hiddenite in 2003 is a matter of record – stashing them in moonshine jugs buried in hidden caves. The first written accounts cluster around the Eagle Nest Hotel, a forty-room hay-fever resort that opened on Eagle Nest Mountain in 1900 and burned in 1918, where guests were warned that the Boojum hid in the mountain laurel to watch women bathing in the forest pools. At the center of the legend is a woman named Annie, who chose to live with him as his wife and whose calls across the ridges are said, in local folk etymology, to have given the word "hootenanny" its name. The segment traces the creature's name back to Lewis Carroll's 1876 nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark, sets the story against the Cherokee removal along the Trail of Tears and the eviction of Appalachian families to create Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and lands in present-day Waynesville, where Boojum Brewing carries the legend's name.The episode closes with the Krononauts, a group from Baltimore's avant-garde art scene who, in January of 1980, ran an advertisement on page 90 of Artforum magazine inviting time travelers to a party in Baltimore on March 9th, 1982, a date chosen because all nine planets would line up more closely than they had in nearly two hundred years, an alignment popularized by the 1974 book The Jupiter Effect. Hundreds of people came, the New York Times covered it and described the scene as an epidemic of temporary lunacy, and no one produced any evidence of time travel, since the organizers' real aim was the permanent paper trail, built on the logic that a documented invitation could be found and answered from any point in the future. The segment follows the same experiment forward through MIT graduate student Amal Dorai's 2005 Time Traveler Convention and physicist Stephen Hawking's 2009 reception at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, where Hawking mailed the invitations only after the party had ended and took the empty room as evidence for his chronology protection conjecture, and it ends with an original song, "Krononauts Party," by Dark Weirdness.LIKE WHAT YOU'RE HEARING? BONUS MONDAYS: Dr. Edwin Barnhart, director of the Maya Exploration Center, has over twenty years of experience in Central and South America as an archaeologist, an explorer and an instructor. He has appeared in over a dozen documentaries and given presentations all over the world.His involvement in Maya studies began in 1990 as an archaeological intern in the ruins of Copan, Honduras. In January of 1996 he was invited to return to Copan and help the University of Pennsylvania excavate the early acropolis and the tomb of the city's lineage founder. From 1992-1995 he had been studying art, iconography and epigraphy (hieroglyphic translation) under the late Dr. Linda Schele at the University of Texas at Austin. During that same time he worked across the state of Texas as a contract archaeologist.In 1994 he began working as a surveyor and a UT field school instructor in the jungles of Northwestern Belize. After finding numerous small villages, Dr. Barnhart discovered the ancient city of Ma'ax Na (Monkey House), a major center of the Classic Maya Period. He mapped over 600 structures at Ma'ax Na between 1995 and 1997 before moving his research focus to Chiapas, Mexico. Also while in Belize, Dr. Barnhart worked with the Belize Post Classic Project mapping the island of Caye Coco and excavating a series of burials on an island in Laguna de On. Dr. Barnhart received his Masters degree in May of 1996 and began teaching Anthropology classes at Southwest Texas State University the following September. He taught Archaeology and Anthropology classes at SWTS until 1998 when he was invited by the Mexican government to direct the Palenque Mapping Project. The Palenque Mapping Project was a three-year effort to survey and map the unknown sections of Palenque's ruins. Over 1100 new structures were documented, bringing the site total to almost 1500. The resultant map has been celebrated as one of the most detailed and accurate ever made of a Maya ruin. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with his dissertation entitled The Palenque Mapping Project: Settlement Patterns and Urbanism in An Ancient Maya City.Upon graduation, Dr. Barnhart and his colleagues established Maya Exploration Center through which to continue and share their research. As of 2020, he has led over 200 ancient sciences travel courses in 15 different countries. Also through MEC, he is the author of an annual wall calendar and an iPhone app which explains the ancient Maya calendar.In 2012, he produced a 24-lecture video series for the Teaching Company's Great Courses entitled “Lost Worlds of South America”. His second Great Course entitled “Maya to Aztec: Ancient Mesoamerica Revealed” was released in March of 2015. Then in 2018 his third Great Course was released, entitled “Ancient Civilizations of North America”. His most recent production with Great Courses is a 6-episode travel series called “Exploring the Mayan World”.Over the last two decades, he has appeared multiple times on the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, Discovery Channel 3D, Canada's Religion Television, Japanese NHK Public Television, and an award-winning documentary entitled “2012: The Beginning”. Dr. Barnhart is a Fellow of the Explorer's Club and leads travel courses for college professors on ancient astronomy, mathematics and sacred geometry. For most people, stepping into the sunshine is an ordinary part of life. For Craig Leppert, even a few minutes of sun exposure can cause severe pain and swelling. Craig lives with erythropoietic protoporphyria, or EPP, a rare genetic condition that causes extreme sensitivity to light. Born in Hawaii, raised on the Jersey Shore, and now working in the television industry in Los Angeles, Craig has spent much of his life planning around the sun. In this episode, Craig joins hosts Cathy Gildenhorn and Beth Glassman to share what growing up with EPP was really like, how the condition affected his relationships and everyday choices, and why its often-invisible pain can be so difficult for others to understand. Craig also discusses founding Shadow Jumpers in 2017. The nonprofit supports individuals and families with photosensitive conditions through sun-safe vacations, home renovations, protective clothing, medical assistance, transportation, and community programs. In 2024, Shadow Jumpers launched Sun Escape, a free annual weekend camp where photosensitive families can enjoy activities including horseback riding, archery, zip lining, and water park access in a carefully sun-safe environment. Craig also reflects on participating in a clinical trial of bitopertin, an investigational treatment for EPP, and what it felt like to spend hours outside without the severe pain that had shaped his life. The land had once been an antebellum plantation, and the previous owners had walked off and left the house abandoned long enough for it to go to auction. The following month, the Wyricks' three-year-old daughter Heidi began describing visits from an elderly man she called Mr. Gordy — silver-gray hair, dark suit, top hat, shiny black shoes — who pushed her on the backyard swing. Not long after, a wounded man she called Con appeared at the front door, a bloody bandage on his arm and blood soaking his shirt.Both were eventually tied to deceased local figures. James S. Gordy had run a real estate company in Columbus, Georgia, served for years as Sunday school superintendent at Ellison Methodist Church, and was connected to the Swint Loop property as executor and caretaker before his death. (His death year appears inconsistently across sources, with some citing 1972 and most citing 1974; either way, he died well over a decade before Heidi was born.) Lon "Con" Batchelor had lost his hand in a cotton gin accident as a teenager, returned home in bloodied clothing with his arm in bandages, and died of cancer in 1957. Heidi, who could not yet read, picked Gordy out of a blind photo lineup and walked directly to his grave among hundreds of headstones in a local cemetery. She identified Batchelor — whose name she'd heard as "Con" — from a family photograph brought to the house by Catherine Ledford, who had previously owned the adjacent property and knew the family history.Beginning in 1993, the activity escalated sharply. Heidi and other family members began seeing a black, hooded, faceless figure that moved through the house, stood in Heidi's closet, and appeared at the foot of her bed. Objects moved on their own; a kitchen chair pulled itself from the table in front of two witnesses; scratches appeared on Heidi and her father Andy across consecutive nights. The Wyricks' second daughter, Jordan, born February 3, 1994, later began reporting interactions with an unseen child. Parapsychologist Dr. William Roll — an Oxford-educated psychologist who had spent eight years researching at Oxford before building a scientific reputation studying haunting phenomena — investigated the case. He recorded an electromagnetic field spike to over forty milligauss in the parents' bedroom against a residential baseline near one-tenth of a milligauss, found elevated positive ion concentrations near Heidi's room, and tied her perceptions to environmental sensitivity and documented seismic activity in the Columbus region. He could not explain the scratches. Roll also traced a reported family history of psychic sensitivity across several generations, extending back to Lisa's mother and to land in north Georgia along the Trail of Tears route.Roll brought in medium Amy Allan — later known to television audiences through The Dead Files — who walked the property under blind conditions and identified three entities in the back rooms: two older men and a faceless dark presence. A second psychic, brought in separately by the family, named the same three entities in the same locations and identified the fireplace as a portal. Years of mounting medical bills kept the Wyricks in the house long after they wanted to leave. After Heidi was found suspended upside down above her bed by an unseen force, they sold the property when she reached her mid-teens. She reported seeing apparitions in the homes that followed.Andy Wyrick died in 2012 at age 45; no cause of death has been widely reported. Dr. William Roll died the same year, in February 2012. Heidi Wyrick married a man named Aaron, relocated to Columbus, and built a career in the medical field. She stopped seeing Mr. Gordy around age eight but still reports seeing the dark figure, and has said in interviews across many years that not a day passes when she doesn't wish the events had never happened. The case was featured on Unsolved Mysteries in 1994, profiled in the Discovery Channel's 2002 documentary A Haunting in Georgia, and served as source material for the 2013 film The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia. Then, Ralph talks to journalist and ocean activist David Helvarg about his new book: Forest of the Sea: The Remarkable Life and Imperiled Future of Kelp.Dean Baker is a Senior Economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, where he authors “Beat the Press,” his regular commentary on economic reporting. He has written several books, including Getting Back to Full Employment: A Better Bargain for Working People, The End of Loser Liberalism: Making Markets Progressive, False Profits: Recovering from the Bubble Economy, and The Conservative Nanny State: How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer.People will hear big numbers. They'll hear “$300 billion” and they'll go “Oh my God, that's a lot of money. That's money out of my pocket. It's causing the government deficit,” whatever. That's because they haven't given it any context…If we could, in any conceivable world, afford to pay $500 billion to increase the military budget, surely we can afford to pay $300 billion to ensure that everyone gets their Social Security benefits. It's just a case of: put it in context. I'm not going to say it's a small number. It isn't. But it's smaller— $300 billion is smaller than $500 billion, and that's really not a disputable point.Dean BakerWhere [DOGE] had the biggest consequences is with foreign aid. [Musk] just got a big kick out of that— USAID, he just shut it down. He boasted about that. He goes, “Last weekend I fed USAID into the wood chipper.” That's almost verbatim what he said. Now, what this meant was that you have people— and you could find waste in that program just like any other program, but this is a program that provided millions of people with medicine, with nutrition, with healthcare. And suddenly they couldn't get it…And Elon Musk was boasting that he killed that program. That's great. But millions of people, I mean, thankfully, I don't think it's millions yet, but if that program doesn't get restarted or funded somewhere else, you're going to see millions of people lose their lives.Dean BakerSo we're saying we have people on Medicaid that are committing fraud? No one gets a check from Medicaid. What would that even mean? Like, you signed up for Medicaid and you weren't eligible, so that would mean that they might be making a payment to a doctor or hospital that they don't actually have to make because you didn't qualify? I'm sure that happens sometimes but it's not like someone's living high on the hog because they were able to get Medicaid to pay for their doctor's visit when it actually shouldn't have.Dean BakerDavid Helvarg is a journalist and ocean activist. Because people don't connect with it, a lot of people think the environment ends at the shoreline. And that's really where 95% of the living space on the planet begins.David HelvargPeople at least know that corals are in trouble and they have some sense of what a coral reef is. People don't know that the planet has this other forest crisis—that kelp forests cover an area larger than the Amazon basin, and they're also being impacted by these marine heat waves that are growing every year. And as you add more heat to the system, it gets more energetic, which is why we have more and more extreme storms. I covered Katrina in 2005. I thought that would be a turning point (we had 1,800 people killed and a million environmental refugees). But the propaganda by the oil and gas industry is such that we keep having these disasters from a warming ocean planet, we see the melting of the Arctic ice, and instead of an alarm bell, it became a dinner bell for all the shipping industries and people who want to exploit the oil and gas in the increasingly open Arctic waters. So we're in this crisis point. I'm more frustrated than despairing because we know what the solutions are. It's creating the political will to enact them.David HelvargWhen I started Blue Frontier 20 years ago, the main threats were overfishing and pollution—oil, chemical, plastic, nutrient pollution. Today, that's being overwhelmed by these marine heat waves.David HelvargNews 6/26/26* Our top story this week comes to us from New York City, where democratic socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani has pulled off a stunning hat trick, with all three candidates for Congress endorsed by the Mayor winning their primaries on Tuesday. The most surprising victory is that of Darializa Avila Chevalier, who ousted the powerful incumbent Congressman Adriano Espaillat, head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in New York's 13th congressional district. This primary had turned ugly, with Espaillat's campaign seeking to weaponize anti-Haitian racism in the Dominican community against Avila Chevalier, per the Haitian Times, despite the fact that she is not in fact Haitian. Impressive in another way is the victory of UAW organizer and New York State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez in New York's 7th district. Much has been made of this race being a proxy battle between Mamdani and his onetime supporter, retiring Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, who backed her protégé, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso to succeed her in this seat. Reynoso enjoyed the support of a broad range of New York elected officials – including Velazquez along with New York Attorney General Letitia James, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and a broad range of unions and civil society groups, most notably the Working Families Party – but was absolutely trounced by Valdez, who won by over 20 points with the support of Mamdani and NYC-DSA. Meanwhile, in the 10th district, Brad Lander won by an even greater margin, outrunning incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman by over 30 points while running on a pro-Palestine platform in the most Jewish congressional district in America. These victories send a clear signal to the sclerotic, ossified leadership of the Democratic Party. The only question now is will they listen.* Beyond the congressional races, DSA won a remarkable number of races at the state level. According to Democratic Left, DSA will send as many as seven new legislators to Albany this cycle, for a total of “four state senators and 11 or 12 members of the state assembly.” As the magazine notes, this means that the “2027-2028 socialist bloc in Albany will be the second largest in a state legislature in U.S. history…behind 20 members in Wisconsin in 1919 and ahead of 14 members in Wisconsin in 1911.” Within New York City, DSA endorsed candidates won seven out of eight races for seats in the state legislature, per NYC-DSA. All told, it was a thunderous victory for the left in New York and raises the clout of Zohran and his compatriots to dizzying heights.* Meanwhile, in Washington DC, NOTUS reports the local DSA has exploded in membership, adding nearly 1,000 new members since this time last year. This growing bloc flexed its political muscle in the recent Democratic primaries, electing DSA members Janeese Lewis George for Mayor and Aparna Raj for the Ward 1 seat on the DC Council, as well as Oye Owolewa for an at-large seat. Axios notes that they are already eying, “two more openings — to fill Lewis George's Ward 4 seat and the at-large seat of Congress-bound Robert White.” If these votes go in DSA's favor, Lewis George could assume the mayoralty with a progressive majority of seven out of 13 members on the Council. Since her victory last Tuesday, Lewis George has emphasized her plan to lower utility costs through “expanding government solar,” and “balcony solar” for apartment tenants, optimizing efficiency at local government agencies and maximizing federal housing grants.* In Maryland, the results for DSA and progressives more generally were not quite so decisive but the left notched key victories nonetheless. DSA endorsed candidate McKayla Wilkes won her primary for the Charles County Commission and incumbent State Delegate Gabriel Acevero won reelection to his seat. Senators Dalya Attar and Nancy King, both centrist incumbents, lost to progressive challengers, per Maryland Matters. Will Jawando in Montgomery County won the County Executive position with broad support from the Maryland political establishment and progressives, while Maryland Senate Majority Leader Bill Ferguson fended off his first real challenge in years only after a last minute pledge to reverse his position on Maryland congressional redistricting. However, in the 5th congressional district, Steny Hoyer protégé and “AIPAC-backed” Adrian Boafo won the primary to succeed his mentor in Congress. According to the Jerusalem Post, “AIPAC poured $5.7 million into his campaign through its super PAC.” Former Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn came in a distant third place, despite scoring the endorsement of Nancy Pelosi. In short, the left has more work to do in order to build a political machine in Maryland as they have in New York and DC.* The next major contest between the factions of the party will occur next week in Colorado, where Melat Kiros, a DSA-backed progressive challenger born in 1997, is taking on Congresswoman Diana DeGette, who first took office that same year, per Zeteo. According to a poll conducted on behalf of the Kiros-aligned Justice Democrats, she leads DeGette by five points and she has now won the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator and former Governor John Hickenlooper is also facing a progressive primary challenge from State Senator Julie Gonzales and, according to the polls, he holds but a single digit lead, the Coloradan reports. We will be watching both of these races closely.* Meanwhile in Congress, the Senate has passed a new resolution on Iran, this time directing Trump to “remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities against Iran unless explicitly authorized by Congress, other than to defend America, an ally or partner from ‘imminent attack,'” according to the Wall Street Journal. The Journal notes that while the resolution is nonbinding, it was previously passed by the House, marking “the first time both chambers of Congress have passed the same measure to curb” presidential power to wage war on the Islamic Republic. The resolution passed 50-48, with the support of Republican Senators Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul. Senators Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick were absent, and Senator John Fetterman again broke ranks with the Democrats to vote no.* Turning from the Senate floor to the shop floor, the United Auto Workers (UAW) concluded their 39th Constitutional Convention last week, with a momentous vote to divest the union's investments from Israel bonds. UAW's divestment decision is the latest victory in the campaign to disentangle the finances of American organized labor from the state of Israel, following the United Electrical Workers (UE) in 2015 and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) in 2023. UAW members also heard from Abdul El-Sayed, the candidate the union has endorsed in the Michigan Senate race. This contentious campaign will not be over until August, but El-Sayed, occupying the progressive lane, has moved into the lead and appears to be consolidating his lead, winning the endorsement of Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen just this week, per the Traverse City Record-Eagle. Van Hollen himself has recently begun hinting that he may seek higher office, recently telling NOTUS that he is “kicking the tires” on a 2028 presidential bid.* Turning to foreign affairs, this week saw the fall of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer, a centrist who was elected Labour Party leader in 2020 following the ouster of leftist Jeremy Corbyn, has held the post of Prime Minister since 2024 when Labour won an historic landslide. Since then however, his personal approval rating and that of the party has cratered, creating space for the rise of the far-right Reform UK party. The BBC reports Starmer will remain in his post until a new leader is chosen from within the party, with the presumptive successor being MP Andy Burnham who recently beat back a challenge in his own seat by a Reform candidate by a large margin. Starmer is now set to be the shortest serving Labour PM in British history, while Burnham is set to become the UK's seventh Prime Minister in the last ten years, both indications of the precariousness of the post-Brexit British political order.* Our final two stories come to us from Latin America. First, in Bolivia, the country's union confederation has maintained a general strike against the right-wing government of Rodrigo Paz for nearly two months over his administration's initiatives to privatize government services and rescind the land reform program instituted over the last several decades of rule by the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). On June 19th, journalist Ollie Vargas reported that the government had blinked and signed an agreement to withdraw these plans in exchange for the unions ending the general strike. In the immediate wake of the election, President Petro “alleged that Israel interfered” in the election, citing “irregularities in the country's vote counting process and calling for a full audit and recount,” per Drop Site News.
