Hailing from the central coast of New South Wales, Australia, Ross Clarke-Jones joined the ASP world tour in 1986, at age 19. He was good in the small waves that the tour typically competed in at that time. But when the surf jacked up to 20-plus feet in the 1986 Billabong Pro at Waimea Bay, Clarke-Jones heaved himself over leadges and exited the water as one of the world's great big waves surfers—and has held that position ever since. He's been a major force in nearly every Eddie, winning that coveted event in 2001. He's paddled Jaws, towed Mavericks, Nazare, and Shipstern Bluff, and pioneered several mutant, way-out-to-sea slabs. He was the subject of the 2006 documentary titled The Sixth Element: The Ross Clarke Jones Story, narrated by the late Dennis Hopper. He and Tom Carroll starred in Storm Riders, a big-wave surfing reality show on the Discovery Channel, which led to Storm Riders 3D, a feature-length documentary. In this episode of Soundings, Clarke-Jones sits down with Jamie Brisick to talk about glory and catastrophe at Waimea Bay, manifestation, his lifelong relationship with Hawaii, racing sports cars, overcoming injury, maintaining motivation, dealing with fear, and the joys of small waves. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).

Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Kash Rocheleau, CEO of Icon Foods, Inc.. She discusses the importance of mentorship, fostering cultures of ownership and transparency, and explains why real growth occurs when we step outside our comfort zones. In today's episode, we discuss: Recognize the impact of supportive mentors in your life. Seek out people who champion your goals and remind you of your strengths during challenges; even one person who believes in you can turn obstacles into opportunities. Lean into self-reliance but also understand when collaboration is important. Balancing independence with the ability to ask for help allows you to own your journey while benefiting from collective wisdom, a dynamic that improves both personal and professional relationships. Embrace your imperfections as valuable leadership assets. When you let go of perfectionism and openly admit your mistakes, it demonstrates authenticity that naturally builds trust and boosts team morale. Remember, vulnerability can often be your greatest strength. Foster cultures of ownership and transparency wherever you are. Whether as a leader or team member, contributing to an environment where people feel responsible for outcomes creates a sense of pride and belonging that benefits everyone. Reexamine the personal “ceilings” you accept or create in your life. Believe that your potential is not capped by others but by yourself, and seek (or become) the kind of support that encourages ambition, so you always have the permission to grow. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with JulieAnn Bornales, Creative Operations & Marketing Consultant, and Podcast Producer. She highlights the lessons learned from career setbacks, finding your voice in challenging environments, and the importance of asking for what you're worth. In today's episode, we discuss: Don't overlook the power of self-belief when facing challenges or workplace uncertainty. Trusting in your ability to solve problems encourages you to keep going through setbacks, helping you recover faster and reach your goals. Know your worth and stand firm in negotiating it, even if it feels uncomfortable initially. Advocating for yourself early in your career can lead to better pay and opportunities later, so get used to asking for more, even if you're eager just to get your foot in the door. Be bold and reach out to people or platforms outside your comfort zone. Sometimes the simplest act of curiosity, like sending an email or asking a question, can lead to big opportunities, so never underestimate the power of taking that next small step. Explore passions and hobbies outside your job to boost creativity and emotional resilience. Hear about travel to Cairo, Egypt, as the Amateur Traveler talks to Neil Laird, TV producer and the author of the Prime Time Travelers Series, about his favorite city. This week's show is supported by the new Smart Travel Podcast. Travel smarter — and spend less — with help from NerdWallet. Check out Smart Travel here. Why should you go to Cairo? Neil says, "I've traveled to some 70 countries and I've been an international documentary TV producer for 30 years. But anytime people ask me what is my happy place, what is the place that set me all off on this journey, it is Egypt. I've been enamored and fascinated by the ancient Egyptians and by the culture there for 30, 35 years, and Cairo is the gateway to that. I spent a lot of time on Luxor shooting films for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and BBC. But Cairo is often overlooked because it's the noisy, chaotic city that you fly into and see the pyramids before you go see Luxor and the great ruins. And that's a shame because Cairo is a universe in itself." Here's the 7-day Cairo itinerary recommended by Neil: Day 1 – Zamalek (Gezira Island) Stay in Zamalek, the leafy island in the Nile – quieter, easier to acclimate. ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-cairo-egypt/ Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textJoe Sills never expected to become a travel writer. Growing up in a small town in West Tennessee surrounded by cotton fields and limited horizons, he couldn't imagine that the places he saw on Discovery Channel would one day become his workplace. After a winding path that included dropped college courses, pizza delivery and graphic design, a workplace shooting became the catalyst that pushed him back toward journalism and eventually into a career documenting some of the world's most remote and vulnerable places. What began as simple wanderlust – "planting flags and checking off countries" as he candidly admits – evolved into something far more meaningful. Today, Sills focuses his camera and storytelling abilities on conservation efforts, sustainable tourism initiatives and giving voice to communities on the frontlines of human-wildlife conflict. His work in places like Nepal's tiger territory and Bolivia's high-altitude flamingo habitats goes beyond typical travel coverage to document the complex relationships between local communities, wildlife and environmental challenges.Perhaps most moving is Sills' recent expedition to Svalbard in the Arctic Circle, where he helped lead children with special needs on a transformative adventure. Many had never left their hometowns, let alone experienced the wonder of snowball fights amid pristine Arctic landscapes. For Sills, these moments represent the culmination of his professional evolution – using travel as a vehicle for transformation rather than mere escapism. As the travel industry faces mounting concerns about sustainability and environmental impact, Sills offers balanced perspective on both challenges and opportunities. He expresses serious reservations about mass tourism models like massive cruise ships while celebrating smaller, more sustainable alternatives. His upcoming projects – documenting Nepal's tourism dynamics and participating in endangered species reintroduction in South Africa – demonstrate his ongoing commitment to using journalism as a force for conservation awareness. Through it all, his philosophy remains refreshingly simple: "If I can take my camera and my words and shine a spotlight on someone who doesn't have the tools to tell their story, whether it's an animal or a person – that's what I want to do."Read Joe's Tiger story here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/joesills/2024/07/28/camping-with-tigers-brings-curious-travelers-to-bardiya-in-nepal/ Connect with Joe on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joesills/?hl=en Listen to past episodes of The Get Lost podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/get-lost-podcast/id1466710154 Please take a moment to rate, review and subscribe to the Media in Minutes podcast here or anywhere you get your podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/media-in-minutes/id1555710662
Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Lauren Cassidy, Founder/Executive Creative Director – LC Studio Productions. She unpacks how showing up as your best self, seizing opportunities, and evolving through every challenge leads to success and fulfillment. In today's episode, we discuss: Embrace a “greatness over perfection” mindset to fuel creativity and avoid stagnation. Lauren learned that seeking perfection sets ceilings and fosters disappointment, while aiming for personal greatness keeps you evolving; by shifting your mindset this way, you allow yourself room for growth, more creative output, and less self-judgment, which benefits anyone seeking fulfillment and innovation in any field. Align your work and life as closely as possible with what you love. Lauren insists on infusing her passion for music and creativity into her work, and when that's not possible, she finds ways outside of work to feel fulfilled; everyone benefits by seeking or creating alignment between their passions and daily activities, which boosts motivation and overall life satisfaction. Stay open to unexpected career forks and don't fear following your curiosity. Lauren's pivotal choice between a theater tour and an HBO job taught her to pursue new opportunities even without guarantees; you too can learn from serendipitous crossroads, as flexibility and openness often lead to bigger breaks and more satisfying work than rigid planning. Use pressure as a moment to pause and collaborate rather than panic. When faced with a high-stakes challenge with Joan Rivers, Lauren demonstrated the value of staying calm and working with her team. So, when you find yourself in a similar situation, remember that stressful moments are best met with composure, seeking help, and trusting your problem-solving skills. RESOURCES: Guest Bio Lauren Cassidy, the founder of LC Studio Productions, has spent her career staging productions that come to life both on-screen and in person, where strategy, storytelling, and execution meet. Picture a show where C-suite executives are the lead actors, the brand is the script, and the audience is everyone from consumers to business partners. Her role? Casting the right team, directing the production, making sure the lines land, and yes, reminding people that Post-its are not, in fact, a filing system. Lauren brings all the pieces together so that when the curtain rises, the story doesn't just play. It sticks. During her 17 years at AMC Networks, Lauren built and led an internal creative studio that doubled as a powerhouse production crew for five core brands and streaming platforms. She produced everything from record-breaking campaigns and B2B activations to all-hands meetings that looked suspiciously like late-night variety shows. (Think executives who never thought they'd sing suddenly nailing a parody number with surprising confidence.) Along the way, she earned a reputation as the connective tissue, linking strategy to execution, creativity to business goals, and vision to reality. Awards, industry recognition, and happy executives were part of the outcome, but the real thrill was watching teams she mentored flourish in the spotlight. When she's not orchestrating corporate blockbusters, Lauren borrows inspiration from theater, music, and pop culture while also fronting a rock band. For her, work has always been about building the right ensemble, setting the stage for success, and giving people a reason to lean in. Whether it's a breakthrough campaign, film festival, upfront, social impact PSA, or an executive keynote, Lauren believes the show must not just go on; it should leave an impression worth remembering. Ever heard of the Discovery Channel's show Dirty Jobs? As the name suggests, in the show a man named Mike Rowe tries disgusting and dangerous occupations. He tours sewers, learns from roadkill cleaners, removes chewing gum from sidewalks, and helps exterminators. You'd think such gross content wouldn't make good television. But the show was a hit among men. Not only does Mike's investigation of the jobs appeal to our innate love of adventure, Mike also continuously expresses admiration and respect for the people who do those jobs. This show is a good reminder that every man wants to conquer a challenge and be respected. As you parent your son, be sure he has opportunities for healthy risk and challenge– even if it means he leaves muddy footprints across your floor. Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts.Storytelling lies at the heart of Caribbean identity. Award-winning filmmaker Alyscia Cunningham joins us to unravel the power of Caribbean folklore through the lens of modern cinema. As a first-generation Trinidadian-American, Cunningham's childhood was filled with spine-tingling tales from her parents' homeland in southern Trinidad. Today, she channels those experiences into her documentary and narrative horror films, creating what she calls "impact art" – creative works designed to educate audiences and spark meaningful conversation. We dive deep into Cunningham's filmmaking journey with Douen and Douen II, exploring why this particular folklore figure – a mischievous childlike spirit who died before baptism – resonated so strongly with her. The conversation reveals fascinating insights about the challenges Caribbean filmmakers. Beyond entertainment, Cunningham's work serves as a crucial bridge between generations, preserving cultural knowledge while making it accessible to contemporary audiences who might otherwise never encounter these traditional tales. Her approach demonstrates how Caribbean horror folklore can evolve without losing its essence, honoring ancestral wisdom while ensuring its survival. Discover how ancient Caribbean folklore finds new life on screen, and why these stories matter now more than ever. Alyscia Cunningham is an award-winning impact artist, author, filmmaker, tactile artist, and photographer who has contributed to the Smithsonian, National Geographic, Discovery Channel and AOL. Her work focuses on women discovering their strengths and surviving challenging circumstances. Rooted in her identity as a first-generation Trinidadian American, Alyscia's early fascination with storytelling was sparked by the tales of resilience, folklore, and life lessons shared by her Caribbean elders. These narratives of triumph over adversity and cultural heritage fuel her creative passion, driving her work in both documentary and narrative filmmaking. Alyscia is also the Founder and Executive Director of Her House Media LLC, focusing on production of documentary and horror films written and directed by women of color.Support the showConnect with Strictly Facts - Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | YouTube | Website Looking to read more about the topics covered in this episode? Riding Shotgun With Charlie #236 Zeke Stout MGS Trade School Zeke and I have been running into each other at various events for a few years. If I remember correctly, Yehuda Remer (RSWC #012) introduced us at SHOT Show. Zeke is a great guy, very personable and funny. Matt Mallory & I have done some live shows with Zeke, including on at SHOT Shot 2025. He's been talking to me about doing a show in Memphis and we were able to pull it off after the NRA Annual Meetings in Atlanta this year. We started across the street from Graceland, yes, where Elvis Presley lived. He warned me to watch out for high speed chases as they have the best drop guns in Memphis! Zeke has made a great career for himself and in several fields. He started in medical sales, pharmaceutical sales, and medical supply sales just to have a solid income. The hours were neverending, being on call all the time. So it was time to move on. At one point, he got some help from an entrepreneurial friend and learned about marketing. This was his new passion. He's been able to use that throughout his career and in many of the fields. They opened a car dealership in Clarksville, TN, and he decided to get his carry permit. Once he was into firearms, he turned it full on. During drives to work he would call and talk with his friend Marty “Lefthand” Holder and they would talk about guns and called it Talking Lead. It hit them that they should start a podcast. His entrepreneur friend owned a Mexican radio station and he asked if they could use the studio to record their podcast. For a while, both Zeke and Vanessa Mandrel had a radio show called Projectile Disfunction. Within four episodes of Talking Lead, they learned there were other great firearm content creators who lived within 30 minutes. Folks like Hickok45, .22 Plinkster, and TNOutdoors9. James Yeager wasn't too far away either. Their episode with Hickok got them into 117 countries. In six months, they were one of the largest gun podcasts in the world. At one point, Zeke started doing marketing for a gunsmithing school who shall not be named. He took that company and grew them over 340% in four years. One day, he opened a message on LinkedIn and there was a message from a casting agency. They wanted him to audition to be a judge for gunsmithing on the show Master of Arms on Discovery Channel. According to him, the way to win an audition is to not care. Once they found out that he had other media and podcasting skills, they wanted him to host the show. Ashley Hlebinsky (RSWC #130) was also on that show. Unfortunately, the show only lasted one season. After the TV season of life, he took a hiatus from firearms and got into marketing in the motorcycle world. Yes, one day a week, he had to ride his bike for work! After a while of motorcycle marketing, he reached out to Modern Gun School, MGS. Part of the offer was to do what he did for the other company, but this time he wanted to be a part owner. One of the first things they did was rebrand to MGS Trade School so that it was much more acceptable. If that wasn't enough, Zeke took that marketing skill and got into golf while his son was taking lessons. He started Dilligolf. It's short for “Do I look like I golf.” He's been growing that YouTube channel, too. It was such a fun show to record and to hang out with Zeke. We do take a call from Yehuda Remer, The Pew Pew Jew. He's got so many stories and tells them well. You'll really get to know him and see what a great guy he is. Oh yeah… we do see a high speed chase and pick up a drop gun. As he says, “we've got the best drop guns in Memphis.” Favorite quotes: “Whenever I get into anything, I dive in, absolute head first.” “Talking Lead was started in a Mexican radio station in Nashville.” “What just happened? We might have something on our hands.” “Dude, we didn't know you did all this. Why don't you audition for the host of this show?” “I'll form an LLC and write off all my golf expenses. And I did.” MGS Trade School https://mgs.edu/ MGS On YouTube http://youtube.com/@mgstradeschool MGS Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MGSTradeSchool/ MGS X https://x.com/mgstradeschool MTS IG https://www.instagram.com/mgstradeschool/ Dilligolf YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@Dilligolf MTR Defense https://mtrdefense.com/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Andrea Wilson Woods, President & Founder, Blue Faery. She highlights how she transformed early hardship, loss, and fierce protectiveness into founding Blue Faery, a nonprofit dedicated to liver cancer advocacy, while sharing lessons on empathy, resilience, and finding joy amidst adversity. In today's episode, we discuss: Recognize the power of role models in shaping your identity. Reflect on who inspired you in childhood (real or fictional) and what qualities you admired. Consciously apply those traits—such as resilience, strength, or compassion—in your daily decisions and relationships, just as Andrea channeled Wonder Woman's fierceness and protectiveness throughout her life. Practice “detachment with empathy.” If you work or volunteer in caregiving or helping professions, learn to care deeply without carrying every burden as your own. Create emotional boundaries so you can keep showing up with compassion, just as Andrea does, without risking burnout. Use counseling, mindfulness, or peer support to reinforce this practice. Intentionally cultivate moments of joy and humor, even during tough times. Look for lightness: share a joke with loved ones, recall funny memories, or build small rituals that make you smile. “Joy is a resilient muscle, strengthening it will give you balance and energy to keep going.” Separate your self-worth from your achievements. Reflect on how your roles (career, family, volunteer, etc.) do not define your value. Develop interests and relationships untethered to performance, and give yourself grace in moments of transition—embrace who you are, not just what you do. Join or build supportive communities. If you or someone you know is affected by a particular challenge (like liver cancer), seek out or help create organizations and groups that provide understanding and resources—there's power in connection and shared experience. RESOURCES: Guest Bio Andrea Wilson Woods is a keynote speaker, a writer who loves to tell stories, and a patient advocate who founded the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. Andrea obtained her master's degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California; her nonfiction writing has won national awards. A Clearance Diver in the Australian Navy, in 2009 Paul was working in Sydney Harbour when he was attacked by a bull shark (the first attack inside the Harbour in 60 years).Paul lost his right hand in the attack and his right leg was amputated a week later. What's remarkable about Paul is not that he was attacked. What's remarkable is what he has done since then. Not only has he returned to the open water, he confronted his fear and dived with bull sharks and even learnt to feed them by hand. He's also become an advocate for the protection of sharks and has hosted documentaries for the Discovery Channel during Shark Week.In this conversation, we discuss his troubled childhood, what he gained when he joined the Army, his decision to become a Clearance Diver despite a “massive” fear of sharks and how he was able to overcome his fear to get back in the water.
Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Chad Hufford, founder and lead advisor, Veritas Wealth Management. He highlights how embracing failure as experimentation, focusing on intentional choices, and building life by design, not by default, can lead to real, lasting success and fulfillment. In today's episode, we discuss: Recognize the impact of early role models. Examine who influenced you most in childhood and what values or lessons they modeled. Understanding these roots helps clarify the foundation for your present decisions and leadership style, guiding you toward more authentic, intentional living. Build resilience through stepping into the unknown. Consider experiences that pushed you out of your comfort zone, as Chad's Alaskan upbringing did for him. Cultivating tolerance for uncertainty sharpens your adaptability and prepares you for difficult leadership decisions, which is key for navigating change and adversity. Use blueprints as flexible guides. Develop clear strategies and plans (your “blueprint”), but remain open to adapting as circumstances shift. This approach keeps you proactive but nimble, allowing you to celebrate progress rather than judge imperfection—making goal achievement less overwhelming and more rewarding. Celebrate controllable actions over uncontrollable outcomes. Focus your efforts on the daily choices you can influence instead of external results like market trends or other people's behavior. This shift builds a sense of agency, boosts motivation, and creates sustainable progress toward long-term goals. Claim the driver's seat in your life. Acknowledge where you've been passive or reactive, and commit to making decisions that align with your values and vision. This empowers you to move from feeling stuck or at the mercy of circumstance to actively shaping your own fulfillment and success. Focus on mindset to create lasting change. Prioritize internal shifts in thinking and resilience, as Chad's book emphasizes, rather than just external “how-tos.” Cultivating an abundant and intentional mindset makes every step toward growth—financial or personal—feel more meaningful and achievable. RESOURCES: Guest Bio Chad Hufford, a lifelong Alaskan, is a financial advisor, speaker, and bestselling author of “Forging Financial Freedom”. He leads Veritas Wealth Management, a boutique firm managing over $500 million nationwide, and is a Dave Ramsey Smart Vestor Pro. We found the Discovery Channel commercial episode. We join the Duggars, alongside other Discovery personnel volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. We saw a good amount of inappropriate attire. I'm not sure when OSHA approved flippy floppies as construction zone footwear. It wasn't all just swinging hammers, we watched a large chunk of the family roast Josh on camera. In our Dig, we look at Billy G's message to alumni: the most important battle is with that damn tongue of yours! The crucial lesson of "Taming your Tongue" is to just stay quiet about anything problematic. And always remember: the real problem is you. It's the worst when you tell people the truth if it makes them look bad. You're only allowed to bring bad things up to the person who did them, and YOU are the one who has to ask for forgiveness. Should probably watch Somebody Feed Phil to cleanse the palate after that. Enjoy what you hear? Would you like to support our newfound Personal Pan Pizza habit in Glendale, Arizona? Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present an "off the wall" episode with UFO contactee and researcher Ella LeBain. author of a six-book series collectively called "Who's Who in the Cosmic Zoo?" Ella's close encounters with what she considers to be extraterrestrial beings, which began during her time in Israel in 1979, inspired her to dig deeper into what has become a 40-plus-year journey to research and discover the truth about UFOs, aliens, ETs, Gods, and Angels. She has also extensively studied alien abductions and other paranormal activities, and how all of these various concepts and ideas fit into the Bible's "End Times" scenario. Ella was orphaned at the age of 6, and again at the age of 15. She says that these personal and highly traumatic events left her open to experiencing multiple supernatural close encounters with a variety of interdimensional beings, including an entity that she identifies as Jesus. Her abduction story was featured as a docudrama on the Travel and Discovery + Channel's TV series "UFO Witness" Season 2, Episode 5. These experiences inspired Ella to conceive — and shaped the writing of — her six-book "Who's Who" series. As of the recording of this episode, Ella announced that her latest book, "The Cosmic Slingshot," is available at Amazon. First, while babysitting, a high-tech alarm system blares without cause—no break-in, no music, and no explanation—just a panicked dog and three terrified kids. But the real chills come later, when her uncle reveals a dark presence in their guest room and sightings of a mysterious girl in a yellow dress. As it turns out, a nearby house was once investigated by the Discovery Channel after claims of a spirit attached to a war relic. It seems that some ghosts don't just haunt a house—they wander the block. If you have a real ghost story or supernatural event to report, please write into our show or call 1-855-853-4802!
