The media landscape is constantly changing, making it harder on journalists. Naturally this affects how PR pros do our jobs. In this episode we talk all about it, including some points from recent survey results from Cision and MuckRack.   Transcript   Michelle Kane (00:03): Thank you for joining us for this episode of That Solo Life, the podcast for PR pros and marketers who work for themselves, people like me, Michelle Kane, with VoiceMatters and my ever steady co-host, Karen Swim of Solo PR Pro. Hi Karen. It's another episode. Here we are. Karen Swim, APR (00:20): Hello Michelle. We are here. We are steady eddies. What's the female version of that? Is it steady? I don't know. Michelle Kane (00:35): I'm sure we can think of something Karen Swim, APR (00:37): For sure. Michelle Kane (00:39): We're creative like that. Karen Swim, APR (00:41): I'm so happy to be here. The older you get, the more you celebrate every single day that you are waking up and jumping out of bed. Michelle Kane (00:52): That's a good motivator. I will say it's true. It is true. I'm going to totally bobble this point because I forget the meme. It was something, oh, I think it was a Marcus Aurelius quote actually. Something about something to look forward to each day - for an ancient dude, he has some timely advice and I thought, yeah, I think I shared it with my thought of, yeah. “Okay. I'll tell myself this on Monday morning.” Karen Swim, APR (01:19): We're live, we're here and we're doing something that we love. We love this podcast. We love getting together and chatting. That's true. And just inviting a few of our friends to listen in with us. Michelle Kane (01:32): Yes. So we hope you are ready Today we are spurred on by a couple of reports from Cision and MuckRack talking about the state of journalism today, which as we all know, if you're listening, you may have already made a face, but hopefully we're just going to talk about this a little bit and try and bring out some of the brighter points to keep our tools sharpened. Karen Swim, APR (02:02): And I think as both of these reports mentioned, the more that we understand the challenges that journalists are facing, the more that we understand how to be problem solvers for them because obviously for communications professionals, journalists are definitely one of our audiences. And so it's important to learn how we can be more collaborative and more helpful. And there are a couple points that really stood out for me that are troubling. Michelle Kane (02:32): All right. We'll do the bad news first. Hit me with the first point. Karen Swim, APR (02:37): So the bad news is these studies show that there is less trust in CEOs as credible sources. Michelle Kane (02:50): Yeah, that one stood out for me as well. Karen Swim, APR (02:53): And aligned with that, this makes sense that one of the biggest challenges for that, journalists said, that they've experienced in the last 12 months, and this is from I think the Cision study, is that their challenge is maintaining credibility as a trusted news source. So you have them battling against misinformation, this label of fake news, combating those accusations and maintaining credibility and then not trusting that we are helping with that at all. So concerning, Michelle Kane (03:37): And I could totally see why. I mean, there are the nefarious sorts out there who are all too happy to use credible news organizations to spread their misinformation and disinformation. And that's not to say that journalists don't fact check. Of course they do. But yeah, it's a really tenuous spot, which puts us the PR pros in a really difficult situation because, Karen Swim, APR (04:04): And I hate to say this because I know that the majority of our audience, there are some that are coming up in the profession and emerging. The majority of our audience knows this, but I think it's always good to remind ourselves too, because in the heat of the moment when we deal with a lot of things that journalists do not realize, there is pressure from clients, there are the demands that they don't see. There are the requests that we push back on. There are things that we educate about, but I think that it is critical today to educate our clients thoroughly about the role that the media actually does play. The media is not part of your marketing team, and unfortunately, if you don't have something that can advance a story forward, that adds value, that presents something that the reporters' readers will be interested in hearing, you're going to have a harder time getting coverage in credible publications. So to be credible, don't see this as an opportunity to push forward the name of your company. I understand the struggle is real and I have beautiful clients, wonderful clients as we all do, but we all know that sometimes it's really hard for companies to get out of their own way. You ask them a question and they immediately default to company speak and the company line, and it's hard to say, “No one cares. Talk to me about beyond your company. Talk to me about the issues that others in your industry are facing. Talk to me about the challenges your clients are facing. Give us a point of view of that. Give us some instruction, help us the way forward.” It is hard, but we've got to do the hard work because, and especially in the season, we are now in an election season and we all know the battle for what is that Michelle Kane (06:25): Bandwidth. Karen Swim, APR (06:28): The battle for the bandwidth of reporters is going to shrink, but also in the season more than ever, we've got to be part of the fight disinformation solution. So we've got to help news organizations to truly be valued again and to be seen as credible. And we can be a part of that by offering up valuable, credible information. It's rough out there, Michelle Kane (07:00): But one of the tools or the brighter notions of these surveys, this is from MuckRack, is one way that our clients can help that cause. And rather than just casually think, oh, the media is just here to be my mouthpiece, they said journalists as a whole plan to spend more time on YouTube, LinkedIn, and even TikTok. So as we've often said, every company has the potential to be their own media company by putting out your own information on your own owned channels, while journalists are planning on spending more time there probably to learn more about you, maybe to vet you. So keep that in mind as a means of presenting, supporting evidence or more deeper information as they consider whether to cover your story. Karen Swim, APR (07:59): Yeah, I mean the MuckRack survey, I love this because I feel like journalists, they can sometimes not be fair to us in the way that they view us, but they also get us, I consider them part of our people. And this was really cool. When asked about their optimism about their profession, 58% said that yes, they were optimistic about the journalism profession. That's more than half, so that's good. 42% were not, but that's okay. Things will improve and understand that they're impacted by the same things that are impacting everyone else. They're seeing shrinking ad revenues, which means shrinking resources for them, more pressure with less resources, less job certainty. Many are switching jobs, many are trying to find other ways that they can make a living at doing the thing that they love doing. So it's rough out there. Michelle Kane (09:05): It really is. It really is. The more that the digital and print advertising landscape changes, the harder it is for all of us as a result. Really, even those of us in the communications field, those of us who do that kind of work with media buying, you're like, okay, I might be making this decision away from a print piece, but that means I am creating my own trouble. Karen Swim, APR (09:29): And I know, just to give you guys some positive ways that you can sort of combat this, clients are going to be clients. Make sure that you are setting a tone consistently, because unfortunately you say things in the beginning and it flies out of people's heads. So you have to consistently set a tone that public relations is not confined to media relations. And so we also have to look for more robust ways to tell stories to connect with our audiences. We have to be innovators and not just rule followers. We should be creating new paths forward when it makes sense to work with the media, help them by having publishable content that is a game changer. When you have good meaty publishable content, don't limit the things that you pitch to just your client's point of view. Reach into their client base, reach out to adjacent experts and enrich a story with credible sources. If you have a healthcare client and you're talking about an issue, grab a medical expert and get a publishable quote from that expert to really provide more meat to that journalist and to help them not to have to hunt down other sources. Again, it's all about credibility and quality information that's going to speak volumes. Do provide them with rich sources from your own experts. So rather than just provide a quote, I interview all of our internal experts, and I have always, for years, used Otter AI to record and transcribe those calls, provide a transcript of the questions that you ask the experts so that because the journalists may find other nuggets within there, don't be afraid to give them, feed them a lot of things that can really help them to do their jobs. And again, in this season, it's about being creative. Maybe you add in an audiogram in addition to the things that you're sending. We love audiograms as podcast. Michelle Kane (11:49): We do. It all comes down to what are you trying to do as what are your clients trying to do? Right? They're trying to present themselves as the solution to their target audience's problems. So rather than just blasting, here's our new thing, okay, well why does that matter? What pain points is that going to resolve? And this is true for PR and marketing. How are you going to enrich or better someone's existence, whether that's making their business more money, making their lives easier, solving a major issue in society, how are you contributing? And like Karen, like you just said, adding all those different layers, plus that helps the journalist. I mean, having something that well-formed in story form. If I'm a journalist and I'm just presented with a few pitch points, okay, now you do it, or something that's crafted and really nearly ready to go in today's landscape, which are you going to be more inclined to go for? Karen Swim, APR (12:53): I completely agree. And don't be afraid to help on things that have nothing to do with you. You can help a journalist out and say, Hey, I saw that you were working on a story. I know somebody that can be of help. And it doesn't have to be a client. Jump in to help on things. Check in with the journalists that you work with often and ask what are they working on? Can you be of help? Can you be of assistance? And most importantly, let's all just always be respectful that we're all under the same pressures. Life is weird for every single one of us. Journalists are human beings who are also going through the same challenges as the rest of the world. So be kind and make the most of their time. Their inboxes are overflowing too. As someone who gets pitched a lot, I have a heightened sensitivity how annoying it is to just have your inbox clogged up by things because people had an agenda that had nothing to do with you. It's annoying and having it hit you in your email, in your social media inboxes and having to go to all these places and read through a bunch of garbage can really make you not a nice person. It's funny because Kami and Misa did a newsletter this week and she talked about showing up in people's DMs and how she, who someone did that to her on LinkedIn, and she is the sweetest, but I was laughing. I completely get it. You want to just go off on people and say, “Did you even bother to read past sentence one?” Michelle Kane (14:43): You're just Karen Swim, APR (14:44): Throwing up here like, Hey, let me sell you this. I don't want that. Michelle Kane (14:48): No. And the worst is when you go on trust. I think this happened moreso on Twitter back in the day. Alright, right, I'll follow you. And you'd immediately get the DM, go buy my thing. I'm like, alright, goodbye - block. Karen Swim, APR (15:03): Yeah, it's so again, be respectful, be kind, be judicious. And we really do have to be more thoughtful, more intentional in crafting those strategies for clients and make sure that they understand that PR does not solve every problem in the world. Make sure that you're attacking and setting expectations appropriately about what you can do and what you can't do. Michelle Kane (15:37): Yeah. Very true. And I have to give a little demographic shout out to Generation X actually got mentioned in the MuckRack executive summary that journalists are looking are targeting both millennials and Gen X. They're their most commonly reported target audiences. I know it's sad, but it's just nice to be remembered. Everyone seems to between you at the Silent Generation and Gen X. It's like, “Hi, we're right here.” Karen Swim, APR (16:09): Yeah. I don't even know what to say. It is nice to be remembered because people really seem to forget that we exist. And the really sad part is people have misconceptions and they target generations, which I think can maybe be a mistake because characteristics that are not confined to generations, Michelle Kane (16:35): I'll never forget it was a conference or something and one of the keynote prisoners was, I guess the Millennial Mom was the target persona of the season and all the things they were ticking off that she wants. And I just said to my friend, I said, well, Gen X wants that too. We just don't talk about it all the time. We're over here in the corner with our Billy Idol scowl just getting it done. Karen Swim, APR (17:02): That's something that maybe communication professionals can help open the eyes and eliminate the way that sometimes you're targeting people that are tech savvy. That's not limited to an age group. Michelle Kane (17:16): Goodness no. No, it's not. Karen Swim, APR (17:19): There are people that share those characteristics and I don't know, we seasoned solos maybe can show them what's up because we're out here showing out and living our very best professional lives and the kids cannot keep up. Michelle Kane (17:39): Right. Well, you know what? Right there, I mean, there's a hook. Why are personas always attached to age and station in life? Karen Swim, APR (17:50): We need to change that. Life is changing. Michelle Kane (17:53): Yeah, exactly. Just because I tick a certain bunch of numbers on your form doesn't mean that my experience matches everyone within that space. Karen Swim, APR (18:07): Love it, love it. Love that thought. Love it. Michelle Kane (18:11): I need a nap now. That was a lot. Well, we hope that this has been a valuable time for you. So talk to us about AI and chat, G P T. How can we utilize this, or what advisor suggestions can you give us that will help our workflow efficiency or front office tasks within our practice? Justin: we we're training the whole team to, to use chat, g p t especially the marketing department.And we, we were using it to. I think that the best way to use it is for content generation, for thinking up ideas of what to say. If you're writing content, say for your newsletter or for posts for content. For any type of marketing sort of thing. It's really, really helpful. Even for reputation management, I'm, I'm using it a lot for responding to bad reviews or maybe even an email that comes through from a patient that uh, is angry.It's like, how do I respond to this? Mm-hmm. Uh, What's the most professional PR way to respond to that? It's really good for that. I use it for HR questions. My staff member did this and uh, how should I deal with it? Or am I gonna get know labor laws pretty well? Legal questions, it's pretty good with that kind of stuff.So I actually got rid of my HR legal monthly fee saving money. Uh, So it's already getting rid of jobs. Which a lot of people are, are afraid that it's mm-hmm. Gonna do. But uh, I, I don't think it does everything for you, but it, it does so much of the thought, like if I sit down to write down something, I, I can figure it out.I took AP English, I'm, I'm pretty good with writing, but it would take me a really long time. It can write it like that. Yeah. I can say, write a blog post. Make it 500 words. Boom. I got you one. Okay. Well, okay. Change it to say this. Boom. It changes to that. Okay. Well actually I want it to be a thousand words.And can you write it from, you, you can, do all sorts of crazy stuff like tell it to write it and the voice of the King James version of the Bible and it can do it for, for you like that. I mean, just anything that you want it to do. It can, it, it can pretty much do. Obviously there's no use case for dental office for doing that.Cool. Yeah, yeah. But like today, I was using it to write a bio for myself, for my, for my website, for my new company, VDO. I'm writing a book, so I took my book and I pasted it on there and I said, take this information, write my bio. And then I wrote bio, but it, it didn't have my name cuz my book doesn't have my name in the, in the text because it's on the cover of the book.I'm still writing it. So I was like, it's, my name is not Dr. Smith, it's Dr. Justin Scott. So can you replace it and rewrite it for that? Also, they entered some stuff that I didn't want, so I take that out and put this in did it and copied paste it and sent it to one of my my assistants and told 'em to add it to the website, you know?Yeah. So changing and editing content makes it just so much easier to do. Michael: Nice. Okay, man. So you said you use it for two things that kind of picked my interest was how do you respond to a bad review? Like what kind of prompts do you put in it? So it can sound like you when there's a review? Right. So, Justin: you know, I say act as a whatever.So act as a PR person and tell me what is the best way to respond to this review. And you know, sometimes you get a person that's complaining about all sorts of stuff. You may wanna give some contacts for the particulars of the situation, but it basically says, we're really sorry to hear that you didn't have a great experience.but it's, it's tailored to the specifics of what it says. Mm-hmm. Uh, It's probably a lot easier cause I, I'm emotional. I, I'm gonna respond wait a second, you did this, you know, but that's against hipaa. You're not allowed to do that. So when I did one the other day, she was complaining about her case and saying, this is what happened.This is what happens. And it says, well, according to hipaa, we can't discuss your case, but we'd love to be able to talk to you and figure out what's going on. We've talked to her a bunch of times, but this is for the. For the people they're reading it. This is for reputation management, so that someone's reading it says, Oh, they, you know, she had a problem, but they really cared and they wanted to take care of, and they offered to offer, you know, help to make sure that she solved it.That's what people really care about that, that you're gonna help with that. So, but if you basically just say, can you, how would you respond to this review as a PR person? Or you can just say, how would you respond to this review? That's a pretty darn good job. Michael: Yeah. Nice. Okay. I like that PR person, right?Act as a PR person. And then the HR questions, what HR questions have you been? Like Justin: asking, oh gosh. I mean, a staff member threat. I mean, I'm just making something up. Mm-hmm. Threatens threatened to harm herself at work, you know, and, There's all sorts of stuff.I mean, we just go on to Facebook and read the crazy stuff that happens in dental offices, but how do you legally respond to that? I'm not an HR person. I don't know. Questions, obviously, it always says, well, I'm not a lawyer, even though it has passed the bar exam. Yeah, G4 has, so you have to pay 20 bucks for G B D four or you can use Microsoft Bing, which gives you access to, to G PT four.The older ones, g PT 3.5, they didn't do as well on the law exam and stuff like that. But yeah, it's crazy how fast those things are learning and getting to be more useful and better. Uhhuh, Michael: I didn't even know that it passed the, the bar exam. Justin: What? It's got a long list of all the different tests that it's passed Now, some tests it's tried, it hasn't done as well, but legal law tests and also you have to use your brain like you have to read it.You know, I'm, I'm not gonna, actually use it for legal advice, but it may like at least give me hints the right way, you know, so that I have an idea of something, you know, so. Mm-hmm. Michael: Yeah. So then how are you utilizing it for marketing right now? Give us, like, if you can, a step-by-step process of this.Somebody who just right now, God on Chad, like, I'm gonna listen to Justin tell me this, and hopefully it will, it'll do this result. Justin: So I think the most easy thing is, for instance I actually did a podcast with another guy. We were talking about the best way to do it. If you're doing video, for instance, you, you're doing a podcast.If I was doing a podcast, what I would do, the first thing I would do is I would transcribe it and you would transcribe it with a bunch of different softwares are out there that can do it. So Otter AI is one can transcribe things for you. Des d e s c r i p t is another AI software that you can transcribe it.Just Debbie Premier. Rev.com. You can pay someone to transcribe it for you per hour or whatever. A couple bucks an hour. So you take that and then you past that into chat GBT and say, okay, write me a blog post about this conversation that we had so that I can put on my website and link this back.So you do that. So now you got your blog posts. Now you say you put it back in, you say, okay, now write me a YouTube thing cause I'm gonna place this on my YouTube and, and put me some, some great hashtags in there. And also, what should I include in the comments section because I wanna make sure that I'm doing everything.So it may say, Oh, well to, you wanna have some sort of email capture device. Like you wanna have a P D F that can be on there, that can be linked. So then when they watch this, now they can download that. Okay, make that for me too. Okay. Now take that and, and make me an Instagram post. Make me 10 tweets will link back to that uh, thing.So you've got this pillar content of video, and then you take the transcript and you use it. And then you spread that all around using chat G P T on all the different social medias that you can go on. TikTok, you can go on different things. All of the different ones have different sizes that they want you to do things or you know, some you want to use more emojis and depends on what you're trying to target.And you can ask it, well, if this is what I'm trying to target. How should I go about doing that? And I do that a lot cuz I'm not a marketing expert. I'm just asking chat, g p t. A lot of these questions, everything I'm telling you I've learned from chat g p T. so another thing is that learning, learning what the best way to do things are.Just asking chat, g p t, what is the best way to do this? Or what is the best way to market this? Or what is the best way to measure this? What is the best way to do an AdWords campaign? What should I do first? Any kind of marketing that you need to do, it really does have great answers and ability to teach you to do those things.So, yeah, I think content generation and being able to take that into slice it and dice it into every different firm and fashion is great. It's a lot of work. I have a, a couple of virtual assistants that I've trained to do all these different things, and that's what the VDO is about is uh, we hire virtual teams for.Dental offices so that they can help them do things like marketing, social media, because the real key is consistency with content. And that it's engaging. And then the measurement because you have to measure the, the impact of your marketing. And that's a lot of work. And if you're practicing dentists like me, being able to do all that stuff is, is very time consuming.Some people like to do it, but it's hard for me to, to be able to put all that together. I like them to aggregate it for me so that I can. Help direct it where I can. Yeah, that's what virtual Michael: dental offices is, is like, it's uh, so for example, I'm a practice owner and then uh, I need a team to help create these campaigns.Market provide strategies, right? Like run the Instagram for Justin: me kind of thing. Yeah, so we train them to do that. We have our processes that we've already trained people to do, so then we hire people and it's very inexpensive because we're hiring them typically in the Philippines. So average cost for somebody is under 12 bucks an hour, you know, where you can't even hire somebody for less than $20 an hour to be your hygiene.The center to work at the front desk these days in Atlanta at least. So we hire somebody and then we just train 'em to do the different things. That someone wants 'em do to help come up with social media captions. And, and the best way to do that is you use chat pt. I mean, naturally most people that you hire is not gonna be able to come up with great engaging content.But chat, PT can and they can access it and use it. You don't have to be smart to be able to do it. You don't even have to have great English. You can just mm-hmm. Ask it to do it right. And you can even ask it in tag go log, which is the main language of Philippines, and it'll. Translate it to English for you very easily.Nice. Okay. It's a great tool for us. We use it all the time with everything that we do. Michael: Are you using it in your front, like your front office is using it right now or no? Justin: We use it for like predeterminations answering patient emails. I think that it's, it's good for just general questions, you know.But it's not great for like real specific questions for insurance and stuff like that yet. Mm-hmm. But. Give it time, it will. So it just needs to be trained, the right data sets. It's just, it's, it's based more on general data versus real specific data. So, but like marketing for instance, which is very general data, it's got a ton of stuff but specifics on insurance, dental specific insurance, it's, it's not as helpful, so.Mm-hmm. But I've asked questions like, what is the c d t code for this? I mean, you could, you could just Google it, but it also will find stuff that you typically could just Google. Michael: Because it's more like a conversation, right? Google gives you a ton of options, but this will give you like, here's what I think.Yeah. And the best option, right? Like one and the best kind of thing. Like right. One that isn't Justin: perfect. I mean, it's not perfect, but man, it's, it's pretty cool. Cuz it feels like a lot of times it's a lot more just straight to the point. You don't have to go clicking on random stuff and dealing with a bunch of spam.Yeah, it's fine. Yeah. You haven't used this. You gotta try it. It's, it's awesome. I got psyched about it. When I started using it. I was like telling my mom and all these people, A lot of people were just like, what? I don't care about this, you know? Yeah. But I'm like, this is revolutionary. This is awesome.Can you see all the things you can do with it? So it's the type of person that is attracted to this kind of thing. Some people just don't care, you know, they're like, whatever, you know? Mm-hmm. But uh, to me it's just like super exciting, super fun, nice play with. Michael: Can you give us one other AI kind of tool we can utilize within the practice?Justin: Let's see. AI tool that we can utilize in the practice. You mean with Chet or with some other type of ai? Some other type Michael: of ai. Justin: Let's see. I really like uh, the script which is a is a video editing app. So I talked about video editing, so if you're doing any kind of video, it's really great for transcribing the, the text and then if you need to edit things like for instance, the uhs and the ums that are coming up, anytime you're having a conversation with, I'm sure I've said it all the time.I, last podcast I had 400 uhs and ums and filler words. So it automatically pulls up all the US ums and filler words. The, the likes and the A means and things like that, you know? Yeah. You know? Yeah, exactly. And all it's on a like a script, kind of like Microsoft Word or. Slides, you know, like the, the, the Google Slides or something like that, or PowerPoint and you just delete it and it deletes the whole scene.So basically the way you edit the video is just by deleting words. You can copy, paste and move 'em around or correct the specific words. So I've been using that a lot. To do little videos. I made a really cool video that's a testimonial for one of my staff members so that I can. Help try to find an assistant.Unfortunately the in-office assistants are really hard to find. One of the reasons I started the company is because it's so hard to find good people nowadays. so I'm actually actively marketing, creating video content just to try to track people to come apply for my job. I pace the. Dental assistant add out.No one responds. And, and this is not just with me, this is industry-wide. I've talked to people that run like my, one of my friends is Tanya Lanier, who owns Dental post.com, which is the biggest well, she, she, she sold it, but she used to own dental post.com, and it's one of the biggest. Places where people post job ads in the country for dental offices.And she says it's happening everywhere as well as I'm part of d e O, which is Dental Entrepreneur's Organization. I'm hearing about it from all over the, the country that one of the biggest problems is just recruiting people is Michael: really challenging. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good way to help though. That's a good way to help to use that, you know what I mean?Right. To create it the way you wanted to create it and, and, and put your spin on it. So. Awesome. Kevin and Graham came across a new AI tool that translates the text of our podcasts. It is called Fathom. AI Summary Fathom Graham, Kevin, and Nina discussed various technological tools and their potential uses. Kevin mentioned Otter AI for transcription and note-taking. Any new shiny object! Kevin mentioned Carplay for dictation while driving. They also briefly mentioned Graham's virtual Alternative Investment Summit in June 2023 and his desire to create a paid note-taking product. The Midlife Revolution Nina discussed her journey of personal and professional development since her last appearance on the podcast, including leaving her previous job and embarking on a midlife revolution by traveling across Canada with her two Dalmatians. At its core, however, artificial intelligence is a tool to help make human beings more productive, more creative, and allow them to execute their ideas faster and on another level. Many people became aware of AI tools mostly through the use of ChatGPT or some image-generating artificial intelligence software. In reality, AI has been around for a long time but what's really getting people excited now is the machine aspect of it. The Benefits of AI in Creative Work Pumping in a data set and creating content from that seemed like a distant possibility not very long ago. Now, AI's ability to do this is just getting better and better, with the possibility to generate tons of content in just seconds. This record-breaking shift to AI we're seeing with ChatGPT is largely thanks to how intuitive it is. The ability to just drop an idea there and get very good and in some cases amazing quality text that needs very little editing is something that is helping get productivity to levels we could only dream of in the past. Will AI Replace You or Your Agency? Of course, not everyone has a positive interpretation of these developments. Some people fear AI will replace them. Instead, we should reframe it as adapting to the many ways in which AI can help us improve what we do. For writers, it's a great tool to get that first idea to start your text. In fact, people who are just using it to create a text and then copy and paste are missing out. The real great results will come from combining the ideas the AI can give you with your own writing. Carl doesn't believe AI can fully replace human creativity. It will, however, hurt the bottom of the market. It won't make sense to pay someone to do something you can now do yourself with AI. The Power of AI in Business Productivity Most agency owners have heard of ChatGPT or Jasper. However, their widespread use has made some people think this is the first AI tool of their kind. This is not true at all; these types of tools have been available for years and have many uses. For instance, Carl uses Fireflies and Otter AI, which are AI bots that join your meeting, record it, transcribe it, note all the questions, and automatically email that to everyone in the meeting. He also uses Midjourney for image generation. In this case, he uses it to generate ideas instead of manually searching for references on the internet. It's a good way to get a sample of what's out there on the internet with the added benefit of saving time. For copywriting, he uses some of the more known ones and also recommends Neuroflash. Are you feeling under-exposed and ill-informed?  That may be because the much-vaunted NSW strata data Hub doesn't tell anyone who doesn't already know stuff very much about your apartment blocks at all. We take a look at the information available on the Hub to non-residents (not much) and residents (not much more) and what's in the “coming soon” section (ditto). Which prompts the question – if having strata information on the Hub is a good idea, why isn't there more of it.  What's so sensitive about some of the info we aren't getting? Shouldn't there be an option to provide greater detail, if the strata scheme wants to? Sometimes in life, less is more – but, usually, less is just less. Also this week we dig down into the Building and Design Practitioners Act (whoo-hoo!) to explore why simple renovation jobs are suddenly costing two or three times the original asking price. And we ask why you have to be an expert data miner, digging through layer after layer of building laws, to discover the genesis of the word “exempt” beyond the tail-chasing, tautological, circular meanings you first encounter. And for those of you who are not in NSW, we are spreading our wings and bringing in a strata expert from interstate. So I cut it all up and was like, wait a minute, like, what? Why am I not doing this?Mischa Zvegintzov So I'm not super active on the social media. And so this is where the pain points start coming in. I mean, there's multiple layers of pain points, hey, I want to have an offer for the public. Right? I'm like, damn, and I want to have an offer so I can start monetizing or get financial validation of my what I'm up to this entrepreneur, entrepreneurial journey. And the truth of the matter is I don't really need financial validation right now. Like I've got my bills are paid for the foreseeable future kids are okay foods on the table, like I'll be okay for for the short to mid term. Like it's okay. So it's a massive ego stuff, right? Excuse me. And, and then there's, you know, learning what I need to learn there's that arc of pain. So the social media, so basically, I'm going to reap, I want to repurpose create all these clips. Push him out on I'm going to tell you all the places to push them out.Mischa Zvegintzov And this is where the pain comes in. I'm because I'm super unfamiliar with YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok not. I mean, I'm familiar with it. But I definitely don't have the processes mastered to crank out content. And just so you know, to crank out clips, like the clips, from what I've seen, research that I've done, and the input coming to me is that you've got to have captions on these clips, you've got to have the captions, so people can watch without the volume. Also, the captions pull you in. So you're prone, the viewer is prone to watch longer. And then you want to have a cool thumbnail to, to to, you know, at the beginning of the clip, so people want to click on the clip. But there's lots of moving parts. There's multiple, well, and then you've got to edit the clip in the first place, you got to put together the clip and the call soundbite. And there is currently not one program that fit efficiently does it that I've found it's probably out there, or it's probably staring me right in the face. But there's that getting the content together. Okay, and then so you've got these clips, so you're gonna put them out on YouTube shorts. And then you've got your regular old YouTube videos, you've got Facebook reels.Mischa Zvegintzov They Facebook story, a Facebook post. These are all slightly different formats, potentially with thumbnails and all this you Got the TIC TOCs, the TIC TOCs, I think they're called tick tock. And then you've got Instagram posts, stories in reels. And so there's lots of moving parts you've got to create. Each one has a slightly different nuance. So you can't just create one video and then push it out all across, you can create the one core clip. But then you have to do the nuanced work on each one. And I'm learning what those nuances are. And I'm trying to figure out the best programs to tackle and apps to tackle those nuances. The captions, the you know, we've got camera coupling, Otter AI, there's all sorts of stuff going on for transcribing for captioning for the creative, you've got iMovie to pull out the clips, because I'm doing these long interviews, they're 30 minutes to an hour. So you've got to have a an efficient clip pulling out or an iMovie is kind of a burly beast. There's Adobe's got what is it? Adobe rush or something comparable, might be a slightly more efficient, I don't know. But I was having meltdown yesterday, as I was trying to figure out how to import the SRT file into coupling.Mischa Zvegintzov Sometimes I can feel like I'm way behind in the process. In the end, the whole process, the entrepreneurial process, as I've started again, a year, year and a half ago. And so I get stuck on this nuanced problem. And it starts really irritating me. I'm like, dammit, how do you import the SRT file into completing the SRT file is the transcription so you go to otter AI. There's other companies Rev. There's scribe. Currently, I'm using otter AI, it allows for a lot of bulk transcribing at a very reasonable cost. I transcribe everything, you can export the transcription files, which is called an SRT file. And then you can import that SRT file into your into coupling allows you to import captions, as well as it does auto captioning on its own. lots of moving parts here. It's suffice it to say, I'm trying to maximize one time, all this stuff, right, I want to interview somebody. And then when I go to publish the interview, I want to, you know, do the transcription. Great. I've got it. I've edited the transcription because you got to edit those things. Because the auto transcribers they miss lots of stuff.Mischa Zvegintzov Anyway, I just was like, I'm hosed. There's too much. I'm wasting my time. I should be making summits and challenges, all these things that are all the rage. But I'm trying to systemize the process of I am Systemising the process of pushing clips out. I'm writing the SOPs. The system that the standard operating procedures of how to do it. Oh my gosh, it's barely anyway, I just I just so yesterday I was in complete meltdown. This is a waste of time. It's silly. What the heck am I doing? And I I brought in the spiritual tools man. I did the rest of the story. It's really what this episode is about. I was like God who's my perfect customer? When I was very frustrated with the perfect client like I don't know who my perfect customer is. Who's this avatar who I want to help. And that really that that pain point in me really started flaring up and showing as my frustration with importing SRT files into complaint was causing me frustration. So I was like, I don't have my offer. I don't have my Who am I even trying to help? What am I doing?Mischa Zvegintzov I was just I just was like, God, who would you have me help? Who do you want me to help God And I was I'm ready for that answer to come slowly. I just asked them like, it's, you tell me, I'm tired of trying to figure it out, you tell me. And I'm, I'm ready for the answer. Whatever you're meant to give me. And then, you know, it was like alright, this offer like flake what what? You know what, what? I hint so I was just praying and meditating on it a hint of writing and they woke up this morning, ton of inspiration, ton of ideas ton of perhaps not specific answers, but some clarity to keep moving forward, keep pressing forward. I just wanted to I just woke up this morning, had a great meditation and really wanted to document this part of the process, that frustration again, I quit. I literally had one of those, you know, I quit moments and, and I was like this too shall pass. pray, meditate. The answers will come and I'm reinvigorated. I'm on the right path. Things are good. This episode must have been fate. I subscribe to an email newsletter about podcasting from PodReacher and they had recommended Otter for transcriptions. I had been looking for a way to include a transcript for each podcast episode on VentureFizz, but I wanted something that was accurate and cost-effective. No, this is not a commercial for Otter, but I tested out the product and was blown away by its accuracy. If you go to our recent podcast episode, you'll now see a full transcript available, which is powered by Otter. Anyway, a few weeks later after becoming a fan of Otter, I heard from their PR firm about having Sam as a guest on our podcast. When I took a deeper dive into his background, things just got even more interesting. Sam started and led Google location server, which powered the blue dot feature on Google Mobile Map in 2006 - 2010. After Google, he launched a successful startup that was acquired and now with Otter, he has a very big vision in how their platform might even change our lives.
