On June 1, 1985, 34-year-old Kathryn Wilhoit was found murdered in her Tulsa, Oklahoma apartment. Her throat had been slashed, and her body was discovered on the floor by officers conducting a welfare check. Her two infant daughters were found unharmed in their cribs nearby. Her estranged husband, Greg Wilhoit, was later convicted of her murder and sentenced to death. After serving five years on death row, he was exonerated when forensic evidence—including bite mark analysis used at trial—was discredited. Despite his release and full exoneration, Kathryn's murder remains unsolved to this day. Krissy Zarn, one of Kathryn's daughters, who was just a baby at the time of the crime, reflects on growing up in the aftermath of a tragedy that shattered her family, her father's wrongful conviction, and her ongoing pursuit of justice for her mother nearly 40 years later. Jonathan shares how he and his wife scaled from single-family homes to multifamily syndications across Texas and Oklahoma by leveraging broker relationships and applying analytical rigor learned from his engineering background. He recounts the transformation of a distressed 170-unit property in Lubbock—from 68% to 93% occupancy in just a few months—by temporarily relocating on-site and aggressively implementing a value-add strategy. Jonathan and Matt also dig into property management challenges, when to vertically integrate, and the importance of broker trust and clear communication in winning off-market or "first-look" deals. You know how people are always saying, "What happens in California often doesn't stay here"? They're so right! Case in point: home insurance. When natural disasters happen, home insurance is how folks are able to rebuild. But when natural disasters happen over and over again, like the wildfires in California, home insurance companies become overwhelmed. And it's not just a California issue. In Iowa and Oklahoma, residents are currently recovering from tornadoes. In North Carolina, families are still reeling from Hurricane Helene. And natural disasters across the country are likely to get more common—and more powerful—because of climate change. So, we spoke to Crooked Climate Correspondent Anya Zoledziowski about how climate change is going to make your home insurance more expensive. And in headlines: California Democrat Rep. Pete Aguilar goes toe to toe with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over federal forces in LA; President Trump threatens potential protesters of his upcoming military parade; Republican Sen. John Thune is feeling good about a certain big, beautiful bill; and Greta Thunberg is among activists deported by Israel after attempting to bring aid to Gaza.Show Notes:Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

“If someone called you a hillbilly in the middle of a playoff game, would you throw hands—or just let it slide?” That's the kind of question that sets the tone for this absolutely unhinged, laugh-out-loud episode of The Ben and Skin Show, featuring the return of the legendary “Fightin McMahons.”Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray fire up the Wayback Machine and revisit one of the most chaotic, hilarious, and oddly heartfelt segments in show history. The spotlight is on Ronnie and Terry McMahon—two fictional, fight-loving country brothers who go toe-to-toe with Oklahoma football blogger Jack Shields in a no-holds-barred radio showdown.

Nic talks with Brett Russell on what he did and does to build a strong culture. In this episode, they discuss what destroys a culture. And they agree that life is life—and so work is both professional and personal. There's no division.Jumping in where they left off from Episode 68 (start there), Nic and Brett talk about the difficulties and opportunities to sow the right seeds to build strong leaders and a strong leadership culture. Brett identifies the importance of recognizing just how hard good leadership is.The reality is a strong culture is the result of well-trained and strong leaders.Brett Russell is the Fire Chief for the City of Clinton, Oklahoma, where he has served since 2017. With a fire service career that began in 1998, Brett brings over 25 years of experience in emergency response and leadership. He is also the founder of Classic Marble Design, a kitchen and bath company he started with his wife and parents in 1997.Brett's passions are faith, family, and leadership—in that order. His relationship with Christ shapes every area of his life and leadership. A strong believer in servant leadership, Brett also serves as Chairman of the Board for Western Oklahoma Christian School, a PreK–6th grade elementary school dedicated to Christ-centered education. As Nic quotes Cruze, “There is going to be a hard in your life.” So, choose your hard. It's hard to go to the gym every day or hard at the pool and be out of shape. It's hard to build a business and it's hard to be broke. “Which hard do you want?”Final thought: “I need to be less concerned to seeing what the seeds produce,” says Brett. “Instead, I ask what am I committed to?” We are all called to something, and you got to find what that is for you.If you enjoy Nic and Tarina's podcast and get something from listening to “all this Nic Bittle Crap,” please hit the like button, share it with a friend, or both. We got a tip about a meat plant selling pig intestines as fake calamari, wondered if it could be true, and decided to investigate. Doppelgängers, doubles, evil twins and not-so-evil twins, this week. Fred Armisen co-hosts with Ira Glass. Visit thisamericanlife.org/lifepartners to sign up for our premium subscription.Prologue: Fred Armisen worked up an imitation of Ira and put it into a sketch on Saturday Night Live a couple of years ago. But when they rehearsed it with an audience, there was not a roar of recognition; it seemed like Ira might not be famous enough to be mocked on network TV. Armisen finally gets a go as Ira's doppelgänger in our studios by co-hosting this episode. (4 minutes)Act One: Ben Calhoun tells a story of physical resemblance — not of a person, but of food. A while ago, a farmer walked through a pork processing plant in Oklahoma with a friend who managed it. He came across boxes stacked on the floor with labels that said "artificial calamari." So he asked his friend "What's artificial calamari?" "Bung," his friend replied. "Hog rectum." Have you or I eaten bung dressed up as seafood? Ben investigated. (26 minutes)Act Two: For decades, the writer Alex Kotlowitz has been writing about the inner cities and the toll of violence on young people. So when he heard about a program at Drexel University where guys from the inner city get counseling for PTSD, he wondered if the effect of urban violence was comparable to the trauma that a person experiences from war.
