The Auburn Tigers may have finally reached the end of their rope. It all started with the 72-62 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers that included a 20-0 second half run by Tennessee Basketball. The worst part of the day for Auburn Basketball may have occurred later Thursday night when the Oklahoma Sooners upset the Texas A&M Aggies 83-63. Dubai alone has been averaging around a hundred munitions being observed each day, nearly all of which are intercepted. Flights out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been able to increase somewhat, as Iranian drone attacks have shifted to targeting American military installations and petroleum infrastructure around the region. Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem Airbase in Kuwait have been primary targets for Iranian missiles/drones, with significant targeting efforts taking place over the past 24 hours.Concerning American targeting efforts, bombings continue in Tehran and other major cities. Most military infrastructure throughout Iran has been destroyed, and President Trump has stated that no deal is sought, as only unconditional surrender is demanded.Analyst Comment: This has been the blanket statement since the start of the war, but it's not entirely clear as to whom Iranian military forces are supposed to surrender to. Right now, any Iranian who wishes to stop fighting doesn't really have any way to declare that intent. As the United States and Israel rather confidently keep assassinating any sort of political leadership within Iran, it's not known who would even have the authority to sign surrender papers at this point.-HomeFront-USA: Various counterterrorism and law enforcement agencies have been progressively increasing security measures at critical sites around the nation, due to the increased potential for terrorism to take place within the United States as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. NORTHCOM has raised the force protection posture at most North American military installations, with the Trusted Traveler program being temporarily halted while terrorism concerns are elevated.Analyst Comment: Right now, the risk of Iranian government-sponsored combatants engaging targets within the homeland is fairly low. However, due to the prevalence of 5th Generation Warfare being common in the modern world, what is much more likely is the co-opting of the Gulf War by other unrelated groups for their own gain. In short, there probably aren't that many Iranian sleeper agents in the US, but there are dozens of other groups seeking to make a name for themselves, or otherwise hijack national attention for their own gain. As always, predicting when and where security threats will pop up is hard, so increased vigilance is recommended.Washington D.C. - DHS Secretary Noem has been transitioned to a new role, with Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma being slated to replace her within the next few days.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Of note, the satellite imagery company Planet Labs has imposed a 96-hour-delay policy with their satellite imagery, so as to prevent their imagery from being used for targeting purposes. As this is an American company, this makes perfect sense at first, as the modern world of commercial satellite imagery within the civilian space has the possibility to impact the war. However, this move is almost certainly not to prevent the Iranians from obtaining targeting data, and implementing this policy a week after the war began (and after American radar sites have been targeted), is akin to shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted.The Iranians are being fed targeting data of their own from the Chinese, who have been all to happy to highlight American losses with their own satellite constellations, which the United States does not control. Welcome back to another episode of Monday Matters! This week, Will Parker and Jen Schwanke are taking some time to reflect on lessons they have learned through coaching school leaders. Listen in to hear the full conversation! This week’s episode was inspired by a post written by Will. You can read it below: Lessons learned in coaching leaders by William D. Parker Over the past several years of working with school leaders across the country, a few lessons have become increasingly clear. In 2017, when I transitioned from principal to executive director of my state principal association, I put more than 30,000 miles on my car in my first year in that role. My goal was to connect across the state with as many leaders one-on-one or in groups in order to secure stronger relationships, as well as get a better feel for the variety of schools represented. I have visited schools in almost every demographic imaginable — urban settings where hundred-year-old buildings house generations of learning, suburban schools supporting college towns, and rural schools where principals may also drive buses and coach teams. One school I visited in the Panhandle of Oklahoma was a district where half the schools served Oklahoma residents, and half of the district was across the border of West Texas. Since those days, I've also criss-crossed the U.S. and spoken in states from coast to coast, at schools, conferences, retreats, and workshops with an emphasis on training or equipping school leaders. I've walked the halls of a demonstration academy in Washington, D.C., observed a program for raising laying hens at a middle school near Oklahoma City, walked the shop floors of welding and robotics programs near Houston, Texas, and spent the day with principals in locations near beaches, mountains, skyscrapers, and cattle lots. In addition to walking in these various settings, I've probably spent even more time in one-on-one conversations with education leaders through virtual or phone calls. Many of these have been coaching or reflection sessions. Some of them have been one-time complimentary times, and many of them have been with leaders who meet with me regularly on a formal basis for coaching and feedback. Along the way, I have gathered a few lessons in coaching leaders that may be insightful as you think about your own development or the opportunities you may have to coach or mentor others. Lesson 1 Most people already have the answers for their next steps. They just need someone to listen and provide them clarity on what they already know they want. That may not seem like an interesting point, but it still surprises me (and the leaders whom I coach) that when we go deep on a challenge they're currently facing, they often already know what they want. The challenge is talking through the pros and cons, the risks and benefits, thoroughly enough to recognize the importance and value of what they want to do next. A lot of times, I'll use what I call the magic wand question with leaders and ask something like, “If you could wave a magic wand, what is the outcome you really want to see happen?” Simply saying this out loud can often provide the clarity and motivation needed to move forward. Lesson 2 Leaders hold roles that isolate them, and they deserve the confidence of someone they can trust. This may be obvious to you if you are a leader, but it may also be a good reminder that the more responsibility you take on in any school or organization, the less others can really understand the weight of concern you carry for those under your care. Many times, school leaders, in particular, manage people or systems where they are being pressured by people from every part of the organization. Board members, teachers, parents, students, and community members all see priorities that are important to them. You must weigh those concerns in light of information none of those other groups is really studying or considering. Yes, it's important to be transparent with the budgets, data, feedback, progress, or lack of progress you are aware of when making hard decisions. But leaders often see the wider lens of all these inputs where their staff or community only see the part most important to their group. When weighing tough decisions about personnel, student discipline, budgets, or curriculum, the leader often is the final decision maker. This position of isolation means they benefit from a third party whose perspective can be objective without being prescriptive. One benefit of working with a coach is avoiding the pitfalls of isolation. We think better with others. Sometimes those others can be the people on your teams or in your communities. At other times, you need to be alone with your thoughts long enough to have clarity, and a good coach will help you navigate your thoughts toward reaching that kind of clarity. Lesson 3 Leaders deserve to be challenged in their thinking and maintain their own growth professionally. Whenever I meet with leaders, I usually include some discussion around content on leadership or education practice. These discussions allow us to talk about writings, research, and practice from other practitioners who inform us of trends, takeaways, or insights into what is working best in improving outcomes. I not only use my own books for these discussions, but I also pull in books from leadership and education authors to guide conversations with school leaders and ask them how this looks in their practice (good or bad), and what they may want to do next to adjust, monitor, or change their own practice. As a result, I'm asking leaders to stretch themselves in their own learning. If we are going to lead learning communities, we must also remain learners. As we wrap up these three lessons, I want to add an additional self-reflection practice I like to do with leaders. If you have ever attended my trainings or listened to my podcast before, you've probably heard me share these. When I meet with leaders, I like to ask them to do a quick self-inventory based on the following statements, ranking their agreement with each statement from 1–5 (1 = little time, 5 = much time). I have been visible and present with every student, every teacher, every day this week. I have been reading, meditating, or reflecting on helpful books or lessons (and our time together also counts). I have made healthy choices in my sleep, nutrition, and exercise. I have been faithful to those I love with my time and attention. You may want to pause a moment and do some math for yourself. The goal is growth, not perfection. Coaching leaders has given me the opportunity to spend time with leaders in places I never imagined visiting before. It has also given me treasured moments of providing feedback, asking hard questions, and protecting confidences. We know in other industries like business and professional athletics that those at the top of their games receive coaching. If that is the case for men and women managing multibillion-dollar companies or competing at the highest levels, why would we not want to provide coaching for those responsible for the learning outcomes of hundreds, if not thousands, of students? Providing helpful feedback to a fellow leader — or inviting someone to sit across from you in coaching — can help you see answers that were already in front of you, protect you from isolation, and stretch your thinking. Just like we want students and teachers to have the best environments for learning, leaders deserve the best environments for their own learning as well. Coaching is one way to help leaders enjoy the very outcomes they are seeking to provide others. (Matt Faubion / Alaska Public Media) Five Indigenous mushers and their dog teams are headed to Nome, Alaska. The 1,000-mile Iditarod race got underway in Willow, north of Anchorage on Sunday. A fresh blanket of snow covered the trail. Two of the top contenders in a field of 37 mushers are Alaska Native. Ryan Redington, an Iñupiaq musher from Knik, won the race in 2023. Pete Kaiser, a Yup'ik from Bethel, took the title in 2019. Kaiser skipped last year's Iditarod and had not planned to race this year until three weeks ago, following his historic tenth win of Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race. (Photo: Gabby Salgado / KYUK) After Kaiser set the record for winning the most Kusko 300s, he says returning to the Iditarod felt like the right decision. “By the time the Kusko's over, you know, you’ve done 90% of the work. Started training in July, and so I just felt like things were looking okay. Felt like, going down the trail again. So here we are.” There are three Indigenous rookies in the race to watch. Jesse Terry, an Anishinaabe musher from Sioux Lookout, Ont., is a veteran of several mid-distance races. He has been mushing dogs since he was 11 years old. Another rookie, Kevin Hansen, an Iñupiaq from Kotzebue, has been sprint racing since the third grade. He finished second in last year's Kobuk 440, just behind defending Iditarod champ, Jesse Holmes. But for Hansen, this race is about more than competition. “Part of who I am as an Iñupiaq, and you really feel it out there. And times when it’s just you, your dogs and the land and dealing with the elements and challenges.” This may be Jody Potts-Joseph's first Iditarod, but the Hän Gwiich'in from Eagle Village, is well known. She starred in the TV show, “Life Below Zero: First Alaskans”, and her daughter, Quanna Chasinghorse, is an Indigenous model, featured in magazines like Vogue. Together, they have been outspoken environmental advocates. “Why mushing out of all the spectrum of things that I do? It's because that's really where my heart is. I just love the land. I love being out on the land with the dogs. And it fills my soul, and it just gives me a lot of purpose.” Potts-Joseph says it has been a tough training season. Interior Alaska temperatures dropped down to 30 to 65 below F this winter — too cold for her dogs to run safely. Her main goal: to finish the Iditarod with a healthy team. That could mean leasing land or, as the Mountain West News Bureau's Hanna Merzbach reports, selling power. At a U.S. Department of Energy webinar, Ken Ahmann with Colusa Indian Energy said that is where the big bucks come in. “Potentially billions of dollars into the coffers of tribes.” His company provides energy infrastructure to data centers on tribal land. He says these partnerships can be good for tribes that have land and resources to power big projects like the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. Paul Bemore is the chair of the tribe's utility board. “Tribes that are casino-dependent really need to look at other ways to build their economies, and I think data centers is one of those opportunities.” Though Bemore says people may be wary about how this will impact the environment. I didn't expect the day's biggest story to land before the show even got rolling, but the first major cabinet domino of the Trump administration has finally fallen. Kristi Noem is out as Secretary of Homeland Security.The immediate cause appears to be a congressional hearing exchange that went sideways. During testimony before Sen. John Kennedy, Noem said that a $200 million ad campaign — one that prominently featured her — had been approved by the president. The White House later said it had not, and it's that contradiction that seems to have been the final straw for Trump.It's no secret that the ground had been shifting under Noem for a while. Critical press coverage had been building, particularly around operational issues inside DHS. Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton are heading toward a runoff, and President Trump has signaled he may intervene with an endorsement.Paxton has already indicated he won't automatically step aside even if Trump backs Cornyn, raising the possibility that the party's internal fight could stretch out for weeks.
