Jason discusses real estate investing, highlighting current market conditions where a slight home sales increase is overshadowed by affordability issues due to higher mortgage rates. He argues that the "in irons" market, characterized by modest price appreciation, benefits rental property owners through steady cash flow and increasing rents due to limited buyer activity. He emphasizes real estate as a multidimensional asset and cautions against non-direct investing, citing risks of fraud, incompetence, and excessive management fees, using a Starbucks CEO's compensation as an example. He promotes direct investment for greater control and wealth building. For today's episode, Jason sits down for an interview with Vince Rodriguez of RE Social podcast. Jason discusses real estate investment strategies, cautioning against relying solely on appreciation in cyclical markets like California due to unpredictable downturns and low cash flow. He advocates for investing in linear markets offering sustainable, long-term growth and consistent cash flow. Jason's company, Empowered Investor, teaches conservative buy-and-hold strategies for turnkey rental properties in vetted markets, emphasizing remote self-management for increased profitability and control. He highlights the benefits of single-family homes as a proven and simple investment. In this episode of The Codependent Doctor, I, Dr. Angela Downey, delve into the world of alternative addiction recovery programs, moving beyond the traditional 12-step approach that many are familiar with. Having previously explored the nature of addiction and the effectiveness of 12-step programs in our last two episodes, I recognize that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Today, I aim to highlight various paths to healing that cater to different needs and preferences.I begin by celebrating the courage of those who are willing to explore recovery options, whether they are newcomers or have previously tried other programs. I share my personal connection to the topic, drawing from my experiences in Codependence Anonymous and the journey of a close family member, whom I refer to as Jane. Jane's exploration of various recovery programs, including SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, and Dharma Recovery, has provided me with valuable insights into the diverse approaches available for those struggling with addiction. The episode features an in-depth look at SMART Recovery, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. This program is designed for individuals seeking a practical, science-based approach to recovery that does not rely on spiritual or religious frameworks. I discuss the four key areas that SMART Recovery focuses on: building and maintaining motivation, coping with urges and cravings, managing thoughts and behaviors, and living a balanced, fulfilling life. Each area is explored with practical strategies and examples, emphasizing the program's empowering nature.Next, I introduce Refuge Recovery, a mindfulness-based program that adopts a Buddhist approach to healing from addiction. I explain how this program encourages self-awareness, meditation, and personal responsibility, helping individuals confront their emotions rather than escape them. I also touch on Dharma Recovery, which shares similarities with Refuge Recovery but offers a more self-guided and flexible structure.Throughout the episode, I emphasize the importance of finding the right recovery approach for each individual, as everyone's journey is unique. I briefly mention other recovery options, including therapy, Life Ring Secular Recovery, Women for Sobriety, Celebrate Recovery, Recovery Dharma, Medication-Assisted Treatment Models, and harm reduction programs. Each of these alternatives provides different strategies and support systems for those seeking to overcome addiction. As I conclude the episode, I remind listeners that recovSend us a textIf you're interested in a list of books that I recommend to help you on your journey you can request it by clicking on the link in my show notes.

I'm not sure about you, but I did not get a lot of training in self-management when I was a graduate student (but cut me some slack... I was in an EAB program!). If you're in the same boat as I am, then you're in luck. In Session 288, I'm joined by Katie Croce and Jamie Salter, and in our conversation, they provided their unique strategies for fostering self-management using the Self and Match system. We get in to how they developed their unique approach to self-management, how they've refined it over time, the relationship between self-monitoring and accountability, research supporting these practices, and lots more. CTO Series: Engineering Leadership, Automation, and Trust with Dan Hollinger In this CTO Series episode, we sit down with Dan Hollinger, an accomplished engineering leader passionate about fostering empathy, transparency, and trust in tech teams. Dan shares pivotal lessons from his career, from building scalable automation systems to navigating complex leadership challenges. We cover key strategies for aligning tech initiatives with business goals, fostering collaboration, and ensuring long-term technical health. Defining Leadership Through Automation and Empowerment “Enable your humans to focus on the interesting work—automation should take care of the rest.” Dan recounts his transformative experience at CCP Games, makers of EVE Online, where a robust test automation system changed his perspective on scaling technical processes. This role introduced him to the power of automation in freeing up engineers to focus on more exploratory and impactful tasks. He emphasizes how empowering self-directed teams with high-level vision statements enables creativity and innovation. Building Self-Correcting Processes “Always retro your processes—don't let them run on autopilot.” Dan explains the importance of self-correcting processes, using the SEV (Side Event) system as an example. He highlights how retrospectives can improve response times and prevent future crises. For Dan, consistent reviews are the key to maintaining agile, resilient systems that adapt to evolving needs. Bridging the Gap Between Business and Tech “There are no enemies—treat your colleagues like allies working toward a common goal.” In cross-functional environments, Dan's mantra is to focus on the project and maintain open communication. Drawing from his experience in gaming, where multiple departments collaborate on creative projects, he underscores the importance of empathy and curiosity. Asking questions and breaking down solutions into smaller, reviewable pieces can diffuse conflict and build trust. Future-Proofing Through Strategic Roadmapping “The lifespan of the solution dictates the scope of the work.” Dan shares his approach to strategic roadmapping by considering the expected longevity of technical solutions. He gives an example of building a feature flag system for a game studio that needed to support a long-term vision while adapting to a new game engine. His advice: break large goals into smaller, adaptable increments that align with future changes. Navigating Leadership Challenges During Organizational Change “Trust is your greatest currency during periods of uncertainty.” Dan reflects on a particularly challenging period when a leadership change caused a significant exodus of engineers at his company, leaving him with only one engineer. Despite the setback, Dan leaned into transparency and empathy, earning the trust of departing team members, which helped him transfer knowledge and rebuild the team. Expanding the Scope of Leadership “My role expanded from leading an engineering team to caring about the morale of the entire company.” A surprising revelation for Dan was realizing the broader impact of his leadership on non-engineering teams. He discusses how this shift required him to listen to and support colleagues across all departments, emphasizing the value of empathy-driven leadership. The Book That Shaped Dan's Leadership Approach “The DORA metrics help us measure what really matters for technical health.” Dan highlights the book Accelerate by Nicole Forsgren et al., which introduced him to the DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) metrics. These metrics help organizations measure software delivery performance and technical health, offering a data-driven approach to evaluate progress and identify improvement areas. About Dan Hollinger Dan Hollinger is a proven engineering leader who champions empowerment through support, empathy, and transparency. He fosters a culture of trust, prioritizing alignment over dictation. Technically adept, Dan advocates for automatable solutions and a blameless environment, ensuring his team thrives both personally and professionally in a collaborative space. Are you feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of college readiness for your teen? Do you wonder how to support them without adding to their stress—or yours? This episode of Power Your Parenting: Moms with Teens tackles these concerns head-on with expert guest Philip Bates, a former educator and principal, now working in college prep at UWorld. Together, Colleen O'Grady and Philip walk moms through how to prepare their teens—whether they're unsure of their future path, striving for Ivy League dreams, or just figuring out what's next after high school. From creating a plan for standardized testing to encouraging a growth mindset, this episode is full of actionable advice to simplify a daunting process. Phillip Bates was a successful educator and school administrator for 17 years. Now he's proud to be working for UWorld. Their mission is to develop and launch products to prepare high school students to be successful on the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. In this episode, Colleen and Philip explore practical strategies for guiding teens through the maze of college prep without adding unnecessary pressure. They discuss the importance of starting conversations early—such as casual visits to college campuses during family trips—and how to meet your child where they are emotionally and developmentally. Philip shares his personal and professional insights on balancing academic rigor, extracurricular involvement, and life skills like self-management. He emphasizes the value of listening to your teen's goals and passions rather than imposing your expectations. With a focus on growth mindset and realistic planning, this episode provides a roadmap for navigating junior and senior years, from handling high-stakes tests like the SAT and ACT to making informed decisions about college applications. Key Takeaways: Start Early but Stay Casual: Introduce the concept of college early by visiting campuses casually during trips, but avoid pressuring your child to have everything figured out too soon. Meet them at their current developmental stage. Encourage a Growth Mindset: Standardized tests don't define your teen's intelligence or future. Frame them as opportunities for improvement, and help your child focus on progress rather than perfection. Self-Management is Key: Beyond academics, teach your teen essential life skills like managing their time, money, and responsibilities. These are just as critical to their success in college and adulthood as their GPA or extracurriculars. Tune in to this insightful episode for tools and strategies to empower both you and your teen on the journey to college readiness. This approach enables teams to think critically and solve problems collaboratively. This week on Revenue Rehab, our host Brandi Starr is joined by Jurriaan Kamer, Co-Founder of Unblock. Meet Jurriaan Kamer, an innovation catalyst in organizational change and dynamic decision-making. With a wealth of experience transforming teams and shaping agile strategies, Jurriaan is a sought-after consultant and thought leader. He co-founded Unblock, a management consultancy dedicated to unlocking organizational potential and fostering thriving workplaces. In this episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi and Jurriaan dive deep into the art of decision-making, distinguishing between haircut and tattoo decisions, and how leaders can empower their teams to make faster, more effective choices. They'll explore real-world applications, learning from failures, and actionable frameworks to overcome slow decision-making and drive substantial results. Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1: Haircut vs. Tattoo Decisions [07:45] Classify decisions into haircut (reversible) or tattoo (irreversible), marking a clear path for making quicker, low-stakes choices. “Haircut decisions don't need extensive analysis or approval, like testing rebrand ideas,” says Kamer. On the flip side, “Tattoo decisions, such as mergers or total rebrands, require thorough consideration and consensus.” Topic #2: Self-Management and Decision Rights [15:32] Leaders must empower their teams by setting clear decision rights and boundaries. “Adopting the ‘waterline' principle—where high-impact decisions below the waterline need oversight, but low-impact ones above it can be made autonomously—enhances decision-making efficiency and team empowerment,” suggests Kamer. Topic #3: Embracing Failures and Experimentation [23:11] Encouraging small-scale experiments and treating failures as learning opportunities fosters innovation. “Leaders should create a safe space for open dialogue where disagreements lead to progress,” shares Kamer. “Fail small, learn quickly, and then scale what works. This approach reduces the risk of significant setbacks while promoting a culture of continuous improvement.” What's One Thing You Can Do Today Jurriaan's ‘One Thing' is to embrace the "Is it safe to try?" mindset in decision-making. "Start by identifying decisions that are reversible—those haircut decisions. Encourage your team to experiment within set boundaries and reflect on these choices regularly. By asking, 'Is it safe to try?', you open up opportunities for growth and learning without the paralysis of over-analysis. This simple shift can accelerate decision-making and foster a culture of innovation within your organization." Buzzword Banishment Buzzword Banishment: Jurriaan's Buzzword to Banish is ‘synergy'. He wants to banish this word because, he says, "It's often used to gloss over real issues and lacks specificity, turning meaningful discussions into vague conversations." Brandi concurs, adding, “Alright, ‘synergy', you're out of here!” Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jurriaankamer/ X: https://x.com/jurriaankamer YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@jurriaankamer Subscribe, listen, and rate/review Revenue Rehab Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts , Amazon Music, or iHeart Radio and find more episodes on our website RevenueRehab.live
