Megan is flying solo this week, as Dave and Evan couldn't make it (I miss you two!). First, Megan reviews THE UGLY STEPSISTER (1:54), Emilie Blichfeldt's Norwegian fairy-tale horror film starring Lea Myren and Thea Sofie Loch Næss, which played at this year's Boston Underground Film Festival. With lush costumes and production design, it's a compelling and gruesome Cinderella retelling that critiques beauty standards.   Then, Megan talks about THE WEDDING BANQUET (19:25), Andrew Ahn's queer rom-com (a remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film) starring Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Han Gi-chan, about a gay man who offers to marry his lesbian friend to pay for her partner's IVF treatments and so he can get a green card. It's a sweet and tender film with an excellent cast.   Lastly, Megan discusses SINNERS (33:41), Ryan Coogler's vampire horror film, starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku. Set in the 1930s, it follows two twin brothers opening a juke joint and the evil that follows them. With gorgeous cinematography and a hypnotic score, it's a visceral, moody, and captivating film.   And on this week's Patreon bonus episode, Megan talks about two newly streaming 2024 genre movies, one set in the 1980s and one in the 1990s: Kyle Mooney's sci-fi horror comedy Y2K and Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy's horror film DEAD MAIL!

Single White Female from 1992 is an interesting movie. It seemed to be a big deal at the time, but neither of us remember anything about it. The rumors of Jenna Ortega starring in a remake are certainly interesting, however. The Saw franchise brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Sure, the vast majority of them are tied to the first, but the same can be said about most long running movie series. Naturally, we have opinions about the cancellation of Saw XI and its future.Though we do not have the opportunity to cover them as much as we would like to, we enjoy short films. In this episode we get to talk about three shorts from the Boston Underground Festival. A gory anthology, the truth about banjo strings, and a really cool stop motion flick all caught our attention.Another movie from BUFF that interested us was Chain Reactions. That it was about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cool enough. Chainsaw is one of the most important horror movies of all time and has a special place in our childhoods. That Stephen King is also prominently featured made it impossible for us to ignore.Alexandre O. Phillipe is a great filmmaker who has made tremendous documentaries about David Lynch, Alien, and The Exorcist. His signature style is on full display here as Chain Reactions is a perfect mix of nostalgia, theory, and opinion on Tobe Hooper's classic. It is a must watch. It has literally been years since we have reviewed a documentary about a cult. So, we were very excited to watch AUM: The Cult at the End of the World. We knew it would be interesting, but we had no idea what to expect. One of us was so dumbfounded by what they saw that they could only use one word to describe it.Aum is unlike any other cult. (Somehow, it is still in existence - kinda.) At its peak, it could legitimately claim worldwide membership that was in the tens of thousands. The existed in full view of the public, Worst of all, they had a relationship with the media that can only be described as friendly. It is a truly wild documentary. Horror is all about its franchises. Audiences love their old favorites so much that there is always a steady stream of news about the next possible legacy sequel. A Quiet Place is a new addition that has released two installments and a prequel. Each has done well but is a third one pushing their luck? There will never be a dearth of Stephen King adaptations to watch. He has an endless well of work for filmmakers to pull from. Even better, there is no need to make new movies when you can constantly remake the things that have already been done. Kind of like Netflix and Cujo.Over the years we have had the chance to cover some great stuff from SXSW. Just last year, Dead Mail ended up being one of our picks for our favorite movies of 2024. So it should come as no surprise that we were really looking forward to what the fest had to offer this year. And we got two good ones.Redux Redux is a revenge tale that takes place throughout the parallel universes. It sounds kinda goofy, but it works thanks to a grounded approach that avoids going too deep into the science fiction aspects. The character driven approach focuses pretty much exclusively on its two protagonists - for better and for worse. You never realize how poorly teenagers are written in movies until you see someone do a great job of it. Clown in the Cornfield has some of the best teenagers seen in movies in years. Thanks to a combination of great writing and strong performances, everything just seems natural. And even in the best movies surrounding younger characters, this is not always the case. The cast of Clown in the Cornfield stand out without overshadowing its story. But it is not the only thing the film has going for it. The plot is as wacky as the title suggests. There are over the top kills, lots of blood, and of course, a killer clown. Its predictability is part of its charm and it is an all around fun slasher. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. How can educators make learning more fun, engaging, and empowering? Today's guest has lots of tips and tricks! In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood welcome Samantha Olschan, an award-winning transmedia artist and educator who works across animation, art, and design for films, brands, and experiential media. Her creative practice investigates how storytelling, motion design, and experimental narrative can serve underrepresented and/or underserved communities.   Listen in to learn how Samantha combines collaborative, game-based, and project-based learning in the classroom with digital media as a learning aid. You'll gain insight into how you can use gamification, play, special projects, and “artist dates” to engage students in learning through creativity both in the classroom and out in their community.   “Through experimentation and play, we can open ourselves up to learning more.”  – Samantha Olschan   Samantha describes how creativity is separate from art and design, the importance of teaching students to work with ambiguity, and how to get your students/kids to trust their ideas and feel confident in their creativity. She emphasizes the value of organizing class time to enable students to explore their interests, produce quality outcomes, and avoid burnout.   “My approach to teaching creativity is through reconnecting the student to empathy and trust. They have to trust their ideas.” – Samantha Olschan   Samantha's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Practice empathy. Think about your students and what they would be excited by, and even your younger self and what you would be excited by. Give yourself permission to try new things. Ask lots of questions to the people around you. Find a mentor or be a mentor. There are lots of people in your community that can support you and engage with your students in fun ways. Look to your community for funding for creative materials and resources. Creativity is about experimentation, exploration, and engagement - not tools, objects, and outcomes.   Recommended Resources: The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron Listen to the episode with Liz Radday   Eager to bring more creativity into your home or classroom?  Access a variety of creativity resources and tools & listen to more episodes of The Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast by visiting our website,  www.CreativityandEducation.com.   Subscribe to our monthly newsletter!   Have a question? Ron Chaney, great-grandson of Lon Chaney, presented Oberst with the first Lon Chaney Award For Outstanding Achievement In Independent Horror Films in 2014.Oberst's staged theatrical reading "Ray Bradbury's Pillar Of Fire" won an Ernest Kearney Platinum Award for its Los Angeles debut, and was named Best Solo Show Of Hollywood Fringe and Best LA Solo Show in the 2015 Best Of LA Theater Roundup at Bitter-Lemons.com. In 2017 "Ray Bradbury's Pillar Of Fire" won a United Solo Theatre Festival Award for its Off-Broadway debut on Theatre Row in New York City. The premiere of the horror-themed episode of CBS-TV's "Criminal Minds" which introduced Oberst's deformed killer character (also guest-starring Adrienne Barbeau and Tobin Bell) was the evening's most-watched TV program. CBS.com included Oberst's character in their list of "Criminal Minds' 14 Most Notorious Serial Killers." The character remains one of only a handful of uncaptured "Criminal Minds" killers. He is perhaps most widely-known internationally as the face of director Jason Zada's "Take This Lollipop," awarded a Daytime Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the category of New Approaches-Daytime Entertainment. Oberst has been seen by over 100 million viewers worldwide as an online stalker in the interactive application for Facebook users. His individual award wins include The 2017 Horror Icon Award at The Optical Theatre Festival in Italy, The 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award at iHolly International Film Festival, a 2017 Best Actor Award at Dark Veins Horror Film Festival, a 2014 Best Actor Award at the Los Angeles Movie Awards, a 2015 Best Actor Award at Chicago Horror Film Festival, a 2015 Best Actor Award at Ontario Fright Night Theatre Film Festival, a 2015 Best Actor Award at Biloxi Fear Fete Film Festival, a 2015 Best Actor Award at Dallas Twisted Tails Film Festival, a 2014 Best Actor Award at FANtastic Horror Film Festival, a 2014 Best Actor Award at Housecore Horror Film Festival, a 2104 Best Actor Award at Tucson Terrorfest, a 2014 Best Actor Award at Los Angeles ZedFest Film Festival, a 2013 Best Actor Award at Pollygrind Film Festival, a 2012 Best Actor Award at Shockfest Film Festival, a 2012 Golden Cobb Award for Best Rising B-Movie Actor, a 2012 Baddest Villain Award at ZedFest Film Festival, a 2013 Monstey Award for Great Historical Monster Moments, a 2016 Best Supporting Actor Award at FANtastic Horror Film Festival, a 2017 Best Actor Award at Italy's Optical Theatre Festival and a 2018 Best Actor Award at An Anti-Hero Production Genre Film Festival in Los Angeles. His shared awards include a 2013 International Critics Award at Deauville Film Festival in France, a 2014 Best Narrative Feature Award at The Los Angeles Movie Awards, a 2016 Director's Award at Boston Underground Film Festival, a 2013 Audience Award at Phoenix Film Festival, a 2013 Audience Award at New Orleans Film Festival, a 2013 Copper Wing Award at Phoenix Film Festival, a 2013 Best Feature Award at Unreal Film Festival, a 2013 Narrative Feature Award at Pollygrind Film Festival, a 2012 Shocker Award at LA Shockfest Film Festival, a 2012 Best Ensemble Acting Award at Sacramento Horror Film Festival and a 2012 Best Ensemble Acting Award at Phoenix Film Festival.Find out more at https://wicked-horror-show.pinecast.coSend us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/wicked-horror-show/26402a7c-85b3-4ed7-8a17-e541b0268301

This week the guys gripe about the MBTA and the weird white cones that have popped up in Evan’s neighborhood – but not for long – because Dave is back in “the studio” and they have a ton of movies to talk about! First, Kris sneaks in a quick review of Tim Burton’s DUMBO (4:15) a movie that tries to tell you what’s fun and fails. Next, Dave and Evan cover JUANITA (7:20) the Netflix film that’s perfectly predictable and nice, although pretty mediocre. After that Dave reviews THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT (15:55), which he describes as two-thirds of a good movie with Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsgard. Finally, they arrive at the main event: this year’s coverage of the Boston Underground Film Festival aka BUFF (25:40). Kris and Evan share their thoughts on a plethora of entertaining films including the delightful documentary HAIL SATAN?, the Boomers vs Millennials horror flick TONE-DEAF, the coming-of-age war-musical KANARIE, the queer Giallo slasher KNIFE + HEART, the creepy ghost tale THE NIGHTSHIFTER, and the sex-positive 90s indie MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE. They even talk about a few shorts in between like I OWE YOU ONE BANANA AND TWO BLACK EYES by friend of the show Jim McDonough!

Hey gang! It’s a big week on Spoilerpiece! Before our awesome theme music kicks in, Evan, Kris, and Dave have a big announcement about the new Spoilerpiece Patreon! (Cue music…) But before launching into this week’s flicks, Dave asks that you please please PRETTY GODDAMN PLEASE go to his Twitter page and vote for “Chronological Coens” or “Chronological Cronenberg” (3:37). And yes, that means he’ll watch the Coen brothers’ movies from BLOOD SIMPLE to HAIL CAESAR! or STEREO to MAPS OF THE STARS, depending on which you choose, dear listeners. Poll closes at roughly 5 p.m. ET Friday, March 23, 2018. As for the big movies this week, it’s Steven Soderbergh’s UNSANE (9:38), which Kris and Dave more or less agree on with one important difference. Then everyone talks PACIFIC RIM UPRISING (35:03), the next chapter in the PACIFIC RIM series. Plus, Kris and Evan talk a little bit about the upcoming Boston Underground Film Festival (31:06)! Stay tuned after the closing music for (very) brief silliness.

A sing-along of songs from camp veers into unexpected territory for the guys this week. Before they get into any movies though, they turn their attention to television, as Evan explains his mad quest to watch as many X-FILES episodes as possible for before the show leaves Netflix streaming. After that Kris recaps his time at the Boston Underground Film Festival aka BUFF (at 9:14), where he highlights a number of notable films including PREVENGE, DARK SONG, BUSTER’S MAL HEART, SHE’S ALLERGIC TO CATS, THE VOID, and DAVE MADE A MAZE. Lastly, the guys tackle THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE (at 20:00), a movie about a couple played by Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh who smuggle Jews in Poland to safety during the Holocaust, which does all the things you’ve seen before and wraps them in a story you haven’t. The guys compare the film to others about the Holocaust like SCHINDLER’S LIST, and are disappointed with familiar aspects of those pictures that seep into this movie, but they still laud its moving performances and excellent cast.
