Strap in for an experience that'll leave your heart a little heavier, yet hopeful, as I chat with Bill Matthews—a man who's faced the darkest valleys of addiction and emerged into the light of wellness and mentoring. His tale isn't just about personal victory; it's a roadmap for others wrestling with the shackles of substance abuse. At 57, with a life rich in sobriety and health, Bill doesn't shy away from the gritty details of his past—a childhood marred by alcohol and drugs, and a journey through the tumultuous waves of recovery that have shaped him into the beacon of hope he is today. Our conversation paints the stark realities of alcoholism against the canvas of family dynamics, early exposure to substance abuse, and the long road to reclaiming one's life. Bill's openness offers a piercing look at how addiction can be a silent thief in the night, robbing years and potential, often masquerading as a social key to ease anxieties. But it's not just a walk down memory lane; we traverse the transformative impact of the 12-step program, the camaraderie of shared struggle, and the discovery of passions like ultra-trail running that redefine the essence of what it means to thrive after addiction. The episode crescendos with Bill's enlifted strategies for tackling self-doubt and the art of self-belief—swapping out that deceptive 'little devil' whispering negativity for a 'corner man' in your corner, cheering on your victories. Our latest episode of Building Men provides an avenue to do just that as we warmly welcome George, the enigmatic creator of "The Tin Men" Instagram page. His insights and perspectives on reshaping mindsets and addressing uncomfortable subjects like gender equality and men's mental health are as thought-provoking as they are inspiring. On a more solemn note, we broach the topic of domestic violence and the overlooked impact on men. We discuss police brutality and its disproportionate fallout on Black men before turning our attention to the high suicide rates among boys. Our conversation emphasizes the necessity to break down barriers and promote open discussions about men's mental health. Michael "Chief" Peterson is a motivational speaker who did a presentation at my daughter's school a few months back. The program was so impactful, my daughter said "dad, you need to interview the Chief...he was amazing." She was right...this man was an absolutely tremendous guest to have on the Building Men Podcast. Michael "Chief" Peterson marries social consciousness with mellow poetic verses. Born and raised in New Britain, CT, he declares himself a man dedicated to his family and focused on helping our youth. Chief not only speaks about social inequities and individual struggle, but he acts to change the cycle. Chief is the playwright of and actor in his one-man show, I Wish Life Had Training Wheels. He was appointed as the first ever Poet Laureate of his hometown, New Britain Connecticut in which he was recently voted into a second term. He appeared on Seasons 4,5, & 6 of the TvOne hit series, Lexus' Verses and Flow. He is the consecutive three time Connecticut Spoken Word Grand Slam Champion. He finished in 5th place during the National Poetry Slam and currently among the top 5 ranked poets in the Southern Fried National Poetry slam.Chief's WebsiteChief's Instagram Building Men InstagramBuilding Men WebsiteBuilding Men YouTubeBuilding Men FacebookBuildingmencoach@gmail.comBook a free coaching call with Dennis If our podcast resonates with you, please consider rating, reviewing and sharing it with anyone who you believe would benefit from the message.Visit our sponsors - Finish The Race – Home of the official Building Men gearBecome Stronger Industries Makers of handmade steel hammers and maces - enter code “buildingmen” for 10% off your entire order

This was a game changing interview on the Building Men Podcast. I had the opportunity to speak with a truly enlightened human being - Kute Blackson. We discuss: Breaking free from the expectations and shadows of our fathers, spirituality, being brutally honest with ourselves, dulling the pain of our existence and finding ways to truly feel aligned. Kute shares his thoughts about masculine rights of passage, meditation, and the concepts of mortality, transcendence and spirituality. You will want to have a notebook nearby to take notes. A charismatic visionary and transformational teacher, Kute Blackson offers a fresh, bold look at spiritual awareness for a whole new generation. Born in Ghana, West Africa, Kute's multicultural upbringing as the child of a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian father has spanned four different continents. His unique lineage lay the foundation for his approach to breaking down barriers and unlocking an individual's true gifts and greatness.Though Kute was raised all over the world, he had always dreamed of life in America. As if by kismet, he won a green card just after finishing school in London. He came to America alone just months later, with no connections or prospects. When Kute arrived in Los Angeles, all he had to his name were two suitcases and the dream of seeking out the spiritual and self-help icons who had inspired him when he was a boy.Kute quickly learned that the "outside-in" approach favored by so many in the personal development space had to become an inside-out approach. So he decided to create his own method—a process that liberates the individual and the true self at the core and then pushes those gifts outward into the universe. This helps the individual get in touch with who they really are. It is a process of breaking free—so that the individual can live, give, and share the truest expression of their self. This is what Kute calls "Liberated Living."Kute is a next generation world leader out to awaken millions to Love and to Live their inspired destiny.I highly recommend following along with Kute and learning from him as I have.Kute Blackson InstagramConnect with Kute BlacksonReinvent Live SeminarYou Are The One BookSoul Talk PodcastBuilding Men InstagramBuilding Men WebsiteBuilding Men YouTubeBuilding Men FacebookBuildingmencoach@gmail.comBook a free coaching call with Dennis If our podcast resonates with you, please consider rating, reviewing and sharing it with anyone who you believe would benefit from the message.Visit our sponsors - Finish The Race – Home of the official Building Men gearBecome Stronger Industries - Makers of handmade steel hammers and maces - enter code “buildingmen” for 10% off your entire order
The Eye of the StormThis was the most educational hour we have spent on the Building Men Podcast. Get a notebook ready to jot down the inspirational pieces of information shared by Akshay Nanavati. Akshay Nanavati has overcome drug addiction, PTSD from fighting the war in Iraq with the Marines (where one of his jobs was to walk in front of vehicles to find bombs), depression and alcoholism that pushed him to the brink of suicide. Since then he has built a global business, run ultramarathons like a 24 hour run and a 50 miler around a cul-de-sac, become 1 of only 26 people to ski up the Axel Heiberg Glacier in Antarctica where he got frostbite on 3 fingers, conducted humanitarian work in post-conflict zones, spent 7 days in darkness, silence and isolation, and explored the most hostile environments on the planet, from mountains to caves to polar icecaps.Combining his life experience with years of research in science and spirituality, he wrote the book “Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear Into Health, Wealth and Happiness." About the book, the Dalai Lama said “Fearvana inspires us to look beyond our own agonizing experiences and find the positive side of our lives.” All the profits from the book are going toward charity.Akshay is now on a mission to help our human family build a positive relationship to suffering in order to create a life of greater meaning, purpose and fulfillment.Fearvana.comFearvana InstagramBuilding Men InstagramBuilding Men WebsiteBuilding Men YouTubeBuilding Men FacebookBuildingmencoach@gmail.comBook a free coaching call with Building MenIf our podcast resonates with you, please consider rating, reviewing and sharing it with anyone who you believe would benefit from the message. In today's episode of The Success Lift Podcast, Brian has a conversation with Dennis and Anthony Morolda about being a leader nowadays, the role that coaches play in the education of younger generations, and how mental health is as important as physical health. The conversation also navigates around men's awareness, masculinity, and the work that Dennis and Anthony have been doing with helping men find their true potential through their Building Men coaching program. You will listen to a thought-provoking discussion where Brian, Dennis and Anthony give their opinion about the current education system for kids and why they need to be guided on non-traditional topics like community, companionship, and vulnerability. Adulthood goes way beyond being responsible: it requires wisdom and conscience to deal with different adversities that life might throw at us. And, unfortunately, these skills are not taught in school. Tune in to listen to the whole chat! In this episode you will learn: Being vulnerable and transparent is directly correlated with masculinity – although people don't think about it that way; How Dennis and Anthony see the role of being mentors for young kids and coaches for adults; Their opinion about the education system nowadays, where kids are intensely suffering with social distancing and unclear guidelines; How important is to be part of a tribe/community and have some sense of companionship, which is much needed today; The benefits of passing along knowledge and wisdom to the younger generations. I interview the first female guest in the long, storied history of the Building Men Podcast...my inspiration, my partner in crime, my girlfriend Julie. We discuss her career as a labor and delivery nurse and how she has had such an amazing insight into relationship dynamics in her career. We talk about verbal, paraverbal and non verbal communication and how Julie was the inspiration for so many of the podcast episodes during the last year. There have been a handful of individuals during the past year of my life that have had a significant impact on my mindset, my confidence and the way that I show up in all aspects of life....at the top of that list is Julie Verona. I am not quite sure what I would have done without this unbelievable woman in my life. “I learned many great lessons from my father–not the least of which is that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.” - Jim Carrey It’s downright scary to take a deep look at what needs to change in your life, as Dennis Morolda and host Ian Lobas know only too well. A former public school teacher, coach and principal, Dennis works with individuals, schools and organizations all over the country providing professional development, assembly programming, motivational speaking and life coaching. Dennis is also the host of the Building Men Podcast, a motivational destination for real talk about purpose, mindset, relationships, connections and the foundational building blocks to success. In this episode, Dennis speaks candidly about how finding his purpose, after 20 years in the field of education, has transformed his life. While he was an assistant principal and later a principal, Dennis noticed there was a high number of adolescent boys with disciplinary and truancy problems, as well as failing grades. He started a social group called “Building Men '' for boys in the 6th to 9th grades. They discussed accountability, respect, responsibility, discipline, relationships, perseverance and masculinity. In his commencement speech at Maharishi University, actor Jim Carrey told graduates, “So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.” Dennis and Ian discuss how to overcome societal, familial and financial pressures to make changes in your life, with the right systems, procedures and guidance in place.
