Aged 17, Chris 'Brolga' Barns was meant to be the 'bird guy' at a new zoo in Broome. A cough in his keeper's house alerted him to a kangaroo joey called Josie, who needed four-hourly feeds and help with the toilet. From then on he was hooked.Brolga knew early on he wanted to make a living working with animals. After meeting Josie he began to rescue other joeys left alive in their mothers' pouches after the large animals had been hit by cars.Word spread about his passion for orphaned joeys, and he started an education centre in an old double-decker bus.In 2013 the BBC made a documentary about Brolga, Kangaroo Dundee, which became a worldwide hit.Brolga and his wife Tahnee now run a hospital and rescue centre outside Alice Springs.Further informationOriginally broadcast October 2018.Read more about Brolga's Kangaroo Sanctuary.2025 update: since Sarah's original conversation with Brolga, the mighty Roger has passed away, at the age of 12.A new Australian movie, Kangaroo, based on Brolga's life and the sanctuary, is due for release in September.Standout story – Belinda TerryHear Belinda Terry, ‘Nocka' Peoples, Cheryl Thompson, Elizabeth 'Thumper' Clark in a special night of storytelling from Muttaburra.https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/conversations/muttaburra-stories-conversations-in-the-shearing-shed/7788918You can read all about the Conversations origin story on the ABC News website.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-08-03/richard-fidler-reflects-on-20-years-of-conversations/105495784This episode was produced by Nicola Harrison. How do you establish a belief in your true identity amid other people's expectations? Host Tina Yeager sits down with Christie Award-winning novelist and former therapist Amanda Cox for a heartfelt conversation on navigating the complex space between others' expectations and our true identities. Together, they explore how the search for belonging, the weight of family dynamics, and the pressure to seek approval can both hinder and reshape our sense of self. Amanda shares her personal journey, professional insights, and the powerful ways her novels—like The Bitter End Birding Society and He Should Have Told the Bees—reflect the challenges and triumphs of embracing who we are truly meant to be. If you've ever struggled to filter out the noise of other voices so you can step boldly into your God-given identity, this episode is just for you. Tune in and discover practical wisdom, encouragement, and hope for your own path toward authenticity and healing. Highlights from the Conversation: Why so many women struggle with identity: Amanda shares how our sense of self is shaped by family, friends, and society—and how we can untangle those outside influences from the truth of who God made us to be. Approval vs. Belonging: Learn the difference between healthy belonging and people-pleasing, and the freedom that comes from living for divine approval rather than human applause. Recognizing your strengths: Are you quiet, observant, or sensitive? Amanda reminds us that what's seen as a “weakness” by others may actually be your God-given superpower. Family dynamics and healing: Ever found yourself slipping back into old patterns the moment you go home? The episode explores how deep-rooted family roles shape us, and practical ways to heal and grow—even when our loved ones don't “get” the new us. Overcoming shame and bitterness: The team discusses the pitfalls of living in the “shoulds” and how forgiving others releases us to become the person God intends us to be. The healing power of fiction: Amanda's novels, including The Bitter End Birding Society and He Should Have Told the Bees, invite readers to process universal emotions like isolation, shame, and hope—showing that fiction can be a gentle guide through real-life challenges.

Hosts: Dr. Ashlee Gethner, LCSW – Child of a Police Officer Jennifer Woosley Saylor, LPCC S – Child of a Police Officer Episode Overview: In this candid episode, Ashlee and Jennifer turn the mics on themselves to dive into their personal journeys, career paths, and how being raised in first responder families shapes not only your worldview but your entire emotional toolkit. The duo explores themes of resilience, family systems, vulnerability, and the ongoing impact of childhood experiences into adult life. Key Topics Covered The First Responder Family System: Jennifer and Ashlee reflect on the unique resilience, values, and awareness that come from growing up in a first responder household. They discuss how these environments often foster critical thinking, acute emotional intelligence, but also present real challenges especially around chaos, structure, and sometimes rigid expectations. Career Paths: Ashlee and Jennifer share their motivating moments that led them to helping professions (social work, mental health), including behind-the-scenes stories about family, pivotal college classes, and the “aha” moments that cemented their purpose. Candid talk about how family experiences (including tough love and the need to “prove ourselves”) shape career choices and attitudes. Family Dynamics & Resiliency: A reflection on the double-edged sword of first responder family dynamics. The strong values and community, alongside the strictness and sometimes unintentionally harsh communication styles that get carried from the field into the home. Insights into how these family systems continue to evolve as children grow into adults and re-negotiate relationships with their parents. Vulnerability & Forgiveness: The importance of parents, especially first responders, showing vulnerability and apologizing when things go wrong. How open, honest dialogue between parent and child can build long-term resilience and deep family bonds, even (or especially) after conflict. Parenting Reflections: Both hosts admit the learning curve of parenting, and the hope to do things differently while acknowledging that every generation makes mistakes. The value of simply saying “I’m sorry” as a parent. In THE FAMILY DYNAMIC: A Journey into the Mystery of Sibling Success (Crown; on sale May 6, 2025), the acclaimed New York Times journalist Susan Dominus offers compelling profiles of six such families in search of the factors that led to their success—was it an inherited quality, a specific way of parenting, the influence of a sibling, or a twist of luck? Inspired by the iconic Brontë sisters, whose remarkable literary success prompted endless speculation, Dominus, the mother of twin teenagers, sought out contemporary high-achieving families who shared intimate stories of their upbringing. She introduces us to the Chens, young parents who fled their country's one-child policy to open a Chinese restaurant in Appalachia—then sent four children to elite colleges and on to careers that give back in technology and medicine; the Groffs, whose claim to fame is not just an award-winning novelist but an Olympic athlete and a notable entrepreneur; the Wojcickis, whose daughters made inroads as STEM pioneers in Silicon Valley; and the Murguias, who rose from exceptionally humble origins to become powerful jurists and civil rights champions. Woven into these and other stories is an account of centuries of scientific research into the ongoing question of nature versus nurture. Elegantly written and extensively researched, The Family Dynamic is more than a checklist of how-to's. It's a deep and moving exploration of the complexity of family life and the rewards—and burdens—of ambition.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
"I think one of the biggest things to convey to anybody who wants to start a business is know what you're good at, know what you like, and know what you're not good at, and then outsource that. Because that's going to help get the business to where you wanna go." —Arielle Moody Ever wonder if you're settling for “good enough” when you could be living—and choosing—so much better? If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the choices you make for your body, your business, or your family, this episode is your permission slip to trust your gut, question the status quo, and demand more from what you put on your skin and into your life. Arielle Moody, a seasoned beauty industry expert and co-founder of Mama Sol, turned her personal quest for safe, effective products into a thriving business that puts wellness and integrity first. Her journey from industry insider to innovative entrepreneur brings a fresh, no-nonsense perspective on why what's inside—both products and people—matters most. Hit play for a candid look at how intentional living, ingredient transparency, self-belief, and values-driven choices shape everything from entrepreneurship and family business to work-life balance, clinical testing, and creating wellness products that truly multitask. Meet Arielle: While pregnant with her first child, shocked by how many toxic ingredients were lurking in everyday products, and after trying dozens of natural mineral sunscreens, Arielle was determined to create one that 1) didn't make her immediately want to wash her face, and 2) didn't leave a white cast on her skin. Picasso Cognizance learned this the hard way when his partner's family took his son away from him at the age of two. Have you ever asked yourself? Do I show my children, through my actions, how to maintain a healthy marriage and set high standards for future relationships? How do I intentionally teach my kids lessons about money, relationships, and mental health that they aren't learning in school? How do I respond when my kids come to me with emotional struggles? If you ever thought parenting was just about getting your kids to do their homework and behave, think again. The real curriculum happens at home, in the conversations we have with our children. Today, Larry and Ethan dive into the essential life lessons that high school just doesn't teach—think managing money, building real relationships, navigating mental health, and mastering communication beyond the digital world. Along the way, you'll hear personal stories about fatherhood, learning how to treat women with respect, and the power of leading by example at home. Larry and Ethan also shine a spotlight on the importance of old-school manners, effective boundary-setting, and even the art of saving and investing early. Plus, they get candid about handling rejection, repairing relationships, and the sometimes tough but necessary skill of saying “no.” As always, they keep things light and relatable, weaving in fun anecdotes and a dash of family banter Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: Relationship Skills Aren't Taught in School: Ethan shares how Larry modeled (not just talked about!) the importance of treating women with respect—from a proper handshake to introducing himself to his girlfriend's parents, and how these “old school manners” set him apart in today's world. Larry and Ethan agree: the best lessons are caught, not taught. Money Management Early On Makes a Difference: Larry reminisces about starting Ethan and his brothers on the envelope savings system and quarterly meetings with a financial advisor from a young age. It pays off: Ethan feels more confident with money than most of his peers, recognizing the power of starting early, setting goals, and understanding critical concepts like compound interest. Create a Safe Space for Mental Health: Ethan reflects on how being able to talk openly about tough situations—whether it's heartbreak, anxiety, or just a hard day—has helped him develop emotional resilience. Larry encourages parents to model vulnerability, listen, and share stories from their own journey (even the awkward ones). Saying “No” and People Pleasing: Larry and Ethan get honest about people pleasing, time management, and learning to filter commitments. Larry's golden rule: “If it's not a hell yes, it's a no.” They discuss real-life examples, from turning down extra work projects to standing strong against peer pressure. Repairing Relationships & Healthy Conflict: Ethan shares what works in his relationship: addressing conflict calmly, not going to bed angry if possible, but also not being afraid to sleep on things when emotions run high—with the agreement to circle back and resolve it the next day. Whether you're a dad, a son, or just someone looking to live more intentionally, this conversation is packed with relatable humor, honest reflections, and practical takeaways to help you. Here's what research and observation highlight about family communication: Research shows that 86% of adolescents identify parents as their primary model for relationship skills and values. Studies found that 49% of Americans say they frequently agree to things they don't want to do to avoid disappointing others. Studies found that over 80% of teens say the way their parents communicate with each other directly affects how they approach their own romantic relationships. Thanks to our Partners, Shop Boss and AppFueledEver meet someone in this industry doing something completely out of the box, and it works? That's Ben Tilson.Kim sits down with Ben, the second-generation owner of Tilson's Auto Repair in Rochester, Minnesota. He's not just growing a solid shop, he's writing children's books to spark curiosity and pride in the next generation of technicians. And no, it's not a gimmick. These books are rooted in Ben's journey with dyslexia and a passion for storytelling that's reshaping how kids and their parents see the auto repair world. We dive into the making of Technician Colton's 10 Steps to an Oil Change and Olivia's ABCs to a Car, how these books are being shared with local libraries, schools, and families, and how they're quietly laying the foundation for future techs. His mission is clear: show kids that trades matter, that working with your hands is something to be proud of, and that this industry is filled with real opportunity. But the episode goes way beyond books. We talk about Ben's creative, grassroots marketing strategies, hosting community events, shop tours, dance parties, Santa in a sleigh, and more. These aren't big-budget campaigns. They're smart, authentic ways to build trust, brand loyalty, and lasting community ties. This one's not just inspiring, it's a reminder that when you lean into who you are and lead with heart, you don't just grow your shop. You build a legacy. This episode is sponsored by Shop Boss. Shop Management software that works the way you need it to right out of the box. Want to revolutionize your marketing? We're all well-aware of the stigma associated with men's mental health. Men are often told overtly or covertly to be just be quiet, do your job, and get your work done. And, while there is certainly some validity to us getting the job done when people are relying on us, it's also valid to consider the mental and emotional battles we often fight as men. Today, I am joined by retired Green Beret, Nick O'Kelly to talk about his time in service the mental and emotional anguish he faced, and what he's done to overcome the challenges of anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation. We talk about how a man begins to confront these issues, finding the balance between bearing down and getting the help we need, how to find teams and avenues of support without feeling weak, and how to confront the stigma (even though we all deal with it) of men's mental health SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 00:00 - Men's Mental Health Stigma 01:05 - Balancing Pride and Duty 03:12 - Debating Vulnerability 04:27 - Military Career Transitions 06:36 - Family Dynamics and Decisions 09:22 - Managing Career Expectations 11:36 - Spousal Support and Sacrifice 14:36 - Masculine and Feminine Dynamics 18:37 - Expectation Management Challenges 21:23 - Trust in Relationships 25:16 - Decision-Making Struggles 28:26 - Imposter Syndrome in Financial Planning 31:58 - Onset of Mental Health Struggles 37:55 - Consequences of Seeking Help 43:29 - Personal Anxiety Experience 47:32 - Spiritual and Physiological Factors 52:29 - High Achievers and Mental Health 54:16 - Connecting with Nick's Work Battle Planners: Pick yours up today!
