We've made it. This is the final episode of our first series. Engaging. This is one of the more “fun” values that make up our mission at SFC. We LOVE skiing and snowboarding, and so it only makes sense that we would want to spend time engaging with other skiers and snowboarders. We have similar values, passions, and interests. And we speak the same language. So it just makes sense. But more than that, engaging is how Jesus modeled his ministry. He WENT to the people. And so like Jesus, we want to meet people where they're at. Like it or not, the Church (church buildings) can make certain people feel uncomfortable. It reminds them of past spiritual trauma, or signifies a place of judgment. And so rather than expecting people to meet us there, we meet them where they are. After all, WE'RE the church, right? In this episode, Randy Schroeder interviews Hannah Mennega. Hannah is a long-time SFCer and an accomplished snowboarder/wakeboarder. Sometimes, the best defense of the gospel isn’t a better argument but a better story. That’s why the previous episode about Josh Chatraw’s book Telling a Better Story and this episode with Russell Moore both focus on narrative apologetics. Also: after an episode in which your intrepid cohosts dredged the depths of some of the worst music ever produced in the history of humanity, this episode marks a return to aural greatness as Timothy looks at music from Paul McCartney, Petra, and Johnny Cash. The focus of the musical discussion this week is “He Went to Paris,” a 1973 tune from everyone’s favorite margarita-marinated beach strummer, the one and only Jimmy Buffett. We dig in conversations in the dugout an how we can teach the game within the game.   Resources owntheoffseason.com Antifragile- Nassim Nicholas Taleb  Stuart McMillan Blog   Contact Twitter Instagram   Show Notes (Zach Casto) “Teachers are the best coaches.” “If you can teach students who may not be interested in the subject you’re teaching then you Teaching opens your eyes on how to get to know each student and create relationships for success. “Deliver content when appropriate and when the athletes are ready for it.” Since there is a ton of information out there we now can give objectives and options instead of giving the player one way to accomplish a task. “Everyone has a built in BS detector now.” It’s about facilitating and understanding how to communicate with each player. We need to find out how each player learns best. The best teachers can reduce the noise to teach each player their best way. You need to be able to filter out what the player doesn’t need to use. Putting our ego aside is very important. “Silence is a sound so don’t just speak to speak.” If we say a lot of irrelevant information then we can lose their trust and detail the player’s career. Coaches need to have deep relationships with the players because they is what builds trust. “Players own their career.” Simplifying data is the most important key for success. You can use pencil and paper and make a leaderboard on things you treasure. Example: create a hard hit ball leaderboard. Find ways to track who is having quality practice and who isn’t. Hitting the ball hard is crucial at the high school level. Maturity and being in the weight room will be helpful with making hard contact. Barrel consistency is super important at the high school level. Track consistency of hard contact and barreled up contact. When first evaluating hitters and pitchers look at timing, rhythm, and tempo. Find out how the player is moving in space and time. Being in control of your body will create consistency. A quality mover has effortless and smooth movements. “It doesn’t look Max effort even though you know the player is giving their best effort.” Have a conversation with your players to build awareness on their timing. “You need a lot of pitches worth of observation if you’re going to use your eyes to assess timing.” Go week by week to assess timing. Data and information can be used in positive ways or negative ways to effect performance. You almost have to re-learn or remold how you’ve learned data to positively influence the player. You can create data for and collect information from seeing with hitting the ball hard. The art of coaching is understanding and coaching each player their best way as an individual. Understanding when to talk and when not to is an art and takes a lot of experience. To create any adjustments with a player, trust has to be there. To create trust there must be a relationship. I’d there is trust, ask questions to have them go through in their head to find out that they need to make a change. You want it to be their idea. If it’s their idea there will be a better chance of buy in. As a coach break down information of who they are facing. Understand what pitch mix they have and the speed of each pitch. Break down the pitchers and find out what information each hitter on your team wants to know. You can either plan against the pitchers strengths or plan around the hitters strengths. “I’d much rather plan around the hitters strengths.” Planning to the pitchers’s strengths puts a defensive mindset to the hitter. Ask each player what they want to know. Some players don’t want to know anything. That’s okay if it works. If it doesn’t work then have a conversation with the player to create a plan. Allow stretch time for the player to get ready for the day. After that allow the players to go through their feel good/ game preparation routine drills to get ready for the day. Understand each of these drills to help each player get ready. Allow the player to use whatever will help him get prepared for the team hitting section of pregame. One of the hardest things to do is freeing the player to do what works for them and to find out their process. To be able to truly help the player, a strong relationship must be there. Players have to trust you in order to trust themselves when you give them that freedom. Being observant as a coach and modeling that will help the players become interested in doing the same. Model what you want your players to do. To be a good coach: understand what the player is feeling when hitting and playing and how they are seeing the ball. Look at timing, are they doing any preparation on the pitcher, do they look under control in their forward move. If a player doesn’t look smooth, odds are he won’t see the ball well. The best coaches make their players feel like an equal to the coaches. You want everyone all in together. Tennis Ball Hitting Drill: Toss into a strike zone. The hitter will either hit the ball in the air or let the ball bounce. The objective is for the hitter to hit the ball on a line. It’s a competitive drill that makes the players better.

I'd have any hits on the on the corner before Chris joins us will I do want to bring up one thing here I will bring up an article I was try to bring up one article to talk about just now woman talk about marketing Christmas songs it's about marketing a lot of people look at the big deal I want to tell everyone about this and so on I really like to look at disease specific states And the article that we can achieve that in the beginning here is an article related to the meta-analysis was published in the Journal of neurochemistry here this year just couple months ago and what it looked at is it did a meta-analysis which is a compilation of studies usually meta-analysis I have in the scientific literature are considered to be more robust picture taking a lot of studies putting them together and this is looking at ALS known as anti-atrophic lateral sclerosis Lou Gehrig's disease is a devastating disease and as I had mentioned earlier it actually took the life of my good friend Dr. Russ of Ron Ike whose guesser Alderson San Antonio and we actually saw his dad his father correct we actually saw this progressive disease and that's the deal about ALS eight what it does is if you're unaware of it I find it to be one of the most devastating diseases out there there's a book called Tuesdays with Maury that I read back many years ago they commit a movie about it also censures about the progress the progression of ALS and somebody that where there is a caregiver helping them out and you get a feeling about how it just slowly chips away and what it does this damages the nerves that control muscles so over time all of your muscles weaken to the point where they cannot contract eventually hitting the diaphragm so you can't read you lose the ability to speak because you can't control your tongue you lose the ability fine motor movement changes first because the small muscles go and you can't button things and it is just a debilitating but you keep your mind eventually you have some mind changes and they don't really understand why it is they believe there's a small genetic component but really what it is it's an excitatory issue with the nerves releasing too many of certain chemicals that eventually do not allow the do not allow the muscle to contract on the words and try to sting like muscle doesn't work so this was quite a while ago I've been in practice for 17 years Russ and I with both med school and fellowship together it was during residency so were talking 27 years ago 25 years ago I do know anything about CBD fat I know they must be in touch two years ago so this study came out red actually showed that they looked at mice and they looked at their ability to travel distance they looked at their grip strength that she put them through some sort of little American ninja course where they had them hang upside down on the net so like a Jacob's ladder, it was it was it was really it was fascinating that I made a run a wheel what they did is they they actually looked at those that had that were given CBD and those that were the control group and what they showed across the board in this meta-analysis is that those mice I'm sorry let me preface that the mice were genetically predisposed to have ALS so they all had a lot okay okay and what they did is that they showed that the mice that were on CBD could actually run further the mice could cling long-running that they actually increase the grip strength running real activity and they had improved survival and they did not have weight loss when they looked at all the studies something stood out to me that was very interesting they were all given CBD one particular study that they look that used a Madrigal inhibitor now what Maggio is is that's the enzyme that breaks down to AG one of your Dodgers and of cannabinoids in one of these days were to get into the deep science about the inner cannabinoid system gets all complex that's a drug it's in study and it's called KM L 29 so it's fascinating that the FDA's over here try to regulate right and in the background you've got drug companies try to develop drugs to manipulate the system if they can figure out that's awesome but is really interesting because the macro inhibitor was not as good as the traditional CBD and so what they found is that CD1 and CB to agonists in other words CBD significantly delayed the decline of motor function when compared to the control group and they showed a consistent 12 to 25 days longer of normal motor function in the mouse world what you doing is really improving that so right now there's no treatment for this they've got a couple drugs available one called real you tech and one called red Dick Reddick Have Not Even Sure That That Was around When Ross's Dad Was Sick They Said That It Could Potentially Slow down the Progression by a Month or Two While the Superexpensive Month or Two That's It I Member at the Time When We Went outside and Rushes Flying All over the Country Thing Is That Everywhere There Were Trying Everything They're Looking at Using Creatine and Different Things like That so Here We Have This Deal Where We've Got Eight Now You Can't Just Translate Mouse Models to Humans But It's Really One of the First Step in Trying to Figure Some Stuff out My Deal Is That We Know That CBD Helps in Many Different Ways and I'm Not Saying That This Is a Disease Claim I'm Not Saying That This Is Functioning and Will Help but It Certainly Can't Hurt and Might Help Right so When You Have a Very Specific Disease Group like ALS to Desperate Group with No Significant Treatment I Think It's Fascinating That These Guys Went to the Trouble of Putting Together This Mouse Data to Actually Try and Figure This out so Here We Have Grip Strength Upside down Running All of It Which Means That There Is Some Potential That This Could Actually Help This Very Devastating Disease and Is Very Small Group of People Because It's Rare but When It Does Affect You It Affects Everybody It May Affect One Person so the Number the Thing We'll Talk about Is When We Say Disease Oh This Is the Incidence of This Disease This Is the Prevalence of This Disease As Somebody Who Lost My Dad at a Young Age It Affects More Than Just the Person That Dies Share the Prevalence or the Incidence of the Disease Affects Everyone Around Them Right so I Think That If We Can Help Those People with ALS If You Know Anybody with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease This Is Something That May Be Showmen We Can Certainly Forward This Article to Anybody That Would like to so Include Any of the Studies That Utilize a Mouse AMI All All of the Drugs They Began and and and Started There to Try to Find out If This Is a Workable Model and Unfortunately with Today's Highly Regulated Environment He Can't Just Keep Going Forward but Were Trying to Help People Connect the Dots This That CBD Is Safe to Take and You Shouldn't Have Any Serious Side Effects Certainly by Consuming CBD It Just so Happens That in This Mouse Model We Saw These Improvements Draw from the Conclusions What You Will But This Is What I've Seen and I Mean I Think That Were Hinting In the in Thanks to O'reilly's for having a sense of humor. QotD: Are Ghosts Real?Since Scottie wasn't able to join me for this podcast, I thought I would bring on 'Tescasterone Story Time'. Here is the story of my home in Hopkins, MN. I was married pretty young, and my wife at the time was interested in spooky old homes, so we purchased a home built in 1902. It was probably built before that, but that was date listed on the title. In 1998 she took her own life, and I hosted the wake in my home. Getting the place ready for the wake, my mother came over and help clean. I left to get something, and she stayed behind to continue setting the place up. As she was in the kitchen, washing dishes, the stereo in the living room came on (no, she doesn't remember what song was playing). She went into the living room, and turned it off. Back in the kitchen, she is busy again, and again the stereo comes on. She promptly walks out the front door and sits on the front step, to wait for my return. All the animals were accounted for, and none of them were active enough at the time to step on the remote. Eventually I got a roommate, John. He never experienced anything that he told me. He got a girlfriend (she never experienced anything spooky, either), who became his wife and moved out. Next roommate, however, was JC. He had some shit happen to him. He and I met at work, so alot of our conversations happened there. I opened the store one day and JC came in later. "Hey, Joe, did you come home earlier today?" I tell him that I opened the store, and have been here the whole time. He proceeds to tell me that he had taken a shower and left the towel on the bathroom floor. (yes, typical bachelor) He Went upstairs to get something to eat, and when he came back down, the towel was hanging on the rod. A couple of nights later, he was laying down to go to sleep, and felt something distinctly female climb in to bed with him. He turned his head, and saw nothing was there. Yet, he could smell her perfume, and kinda still feel her pressure on the bed behind him. A week or so later he purchased three tiny gargoyles to line up on the TV (Gargoyles have been used for centuries to send evil spirits away) facing his bed. Every night he would come downstairs only to find them turned and facing the wall - even when I was away on vacation. Eventually he, too, got married and moved out. The next couple of roommates never had any experiences, at least not that they ever told me about. I sold the house to an investor who renovated the property to set up for leasing. In the past ten years, I have never seen anyone live there, I drive by after snow storms, and I never see any tire tracks in the driveway. The place may be haunted by my wife? Maybe other spirits? Who knows. A couple of years ago I went down to Kansas City to do a ghost hunt with Darkness Dave (of Beyond the Darkness podcast fame) at the Belvoir Winery. Formerly the winery was an Oddfellows Orphanage/Assylum. I met Dave, and several of the cast from the Ghost Mine tv show. They all gave little talks, and then we did the investigation. After, I got back to Minnesota, I went through all the digital recordings, etc, to see if evidence presented itself to me. Nothing. No experiences, personally. Yet, I remain open minded. Do ghosts exist? Again, not a clue. Just an interesting theory. Hello and welcome to Holiday a Day, your daily dose of Holidays, festivals, celebrations and remembrances from around the world.   I’m Jeffrey Johnson   On July 27th 2014 we celebrate   Sleepyhead Day   You do not want to sleep late on July 27th in Finland, the last person to awake in the house get woken by either being thrown in the water (lake or sea) or having water thrown on them them to wake them up.   This goes back to the Middle Ages (the first recorded instance was 1652). It commemorates the time when the Saint of Ephesus was being persecuted by the Roman Emperor for practicing Christianity. He Went to the mountains to hide and while there fell asleep in a cave where he slept for 200 years. Waking up after so long he thought that only a day had passed and went into the town to buy food only to find that churches now stood in the town.   The city of Naantali even gets a celebrity to be thrown in every year and has a festival all day long for the event.   Happy Sleepyhead Day! Hello and welcome to Holiday a Week, your weekly preview of the Holidays, festivals, celebrations and remembrances from around the world.   I’m Jeffrey Johnson   This podcast is for week starting on Monday July  21st, 2014   July 21st is Racial Harmony Day in Singapore   A day to commemorate the 1964 racial riots, when students will reflect on and celebrate the rich racial diversity of Singapore. The day has been celebrated since 1998, with students dressing in traditional clothing and playing traditional games.   Also on July 21st   - Belgian National Day The swearing in of the King of Belgium happened on July 21, 1831, which marked the formation of the Kingdom of Belgium. Having just recently attained its independence, a constitutional convention was established that draft their first constitution. The soon to be King, Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg, swore allegiance to the constitution making him the first King. This marked the end of the Belgian Revolution.   Since then Belgium has come to be associated with a place to hold the head of international headquarters, such as the European Union and NATO.   During the National Day there is a review of the military and police by the King, currently King Philippe who ascended to the throne on last years National Day when his father resigned. There are also booths around the capital, Brussels, of the different agencies of the government to let the public know what they do and answer questions. And like many Nation Days there are fireworks to conclude the celebration in the evening.   July 23 - Renaissance Day in Oman   Qaboos bin Said al Said became the Sultan of Oman on July 23, 1970, now known as Renaissance Day, taking over from his father. He ushered in a much more progressive government helping to bring the population to a much higher standard of living. He has also helped to maintain good relations with both the West and Iran, often mediating between the two powers.   Happy Renaissance Day Oman!   Also on July 23   - Revolution Day in Egypt The largest of the civil holiday in Egypt, it celebrates the anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution in 1952. Marked by concerts and military parades.   Happy Revolution Day Egypt!   July 24 - Pioneer Day, Utah United States   Celebrating the day when Brigham Young entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, this is a day celebrated by not only those of the Mormon faith but all those who live in the area to commemorate the pioneers who lead the way to the west and settled in the area. Celebrated in similar fashion as Independance Day for the United States, there are parades, fireworks, rodeos and other festivities. It is the second most heavily trafficked day in the area, with the 4th of July just a head of it.   Happy Pioneer Day!   25 July - Ebernoe Horn Fair   In the small town Ebernoe Sussex, England is a tradition 100s of years old though it had gone into a dormant period and restarted in the mid 1800s. They have had self rule for most of their existence until 1887, with only two other times colonial powers controlled the area for a total of just over 15 years. Having influences from the west, middle east and the east as a stopping point for merchants, they have had a number of cultural influences throughout history.
