Even if you don't live in NYC, its election results are bound to affect you in some way— especially with the potential for the city's first Muslim mayor to be going up against a Trump administration more than willing to make him, and the city, a target. Surprisingly, Marjorie Taylor Greene has emerged as a forceful critic of the GOP stance in the government shutdown fight. Greene just unleashed an angry rant at House Speaker Mike Johnson, pointedly accusing him of having no answer or millions of people who will lose Obamacare subsidies due to the GOP refusal to extend them. “He refused to give one policy proposal to our GOP conference on our own conference call,” Greene raged. “Apparently I have to go into a [classified facility] to find out the Republican healthcare plan!!!” This wrecks Trump's shutdown strategy: It sabotages his effort to blame the shutdown on Democrats wanting to give health care to undocumented immigrants, and shifts blame back to the GOP desire to take health care away from millions of Americans. More than 11 percent of Americans take antidepressants, including rising numbers of kids and adolescents and even pregnant women.The majority of Americans believe that depression is linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain, and that drugs can fix this imbalance—just as someone with Type 1 diabetes might take insulin. But that's not true, according to board-certified psychiatrist Josef Witt-Doerring.“There's never been any evidence that there's been a chemical imbalance,” Witt-Doerring says. “There is no way to differentiate patients who are depressed from those who are not depressed using any objective markers.”Instead of fixing a chemical balance, what antidepressants really do is mask symptoms, he says.A former FDA officer and now director of TaperClinic, Witt-Doerring helps people safely get off of psychiatric medications.In this episode, we dive into the realities of antidepressant drug use, what most patients often aren't told by their doctors, and how a patient can be weaned off of psychiatric drugs safely and avoid devastating withdrawal symptoms.How do these drugs affect people long-term? The main issue keeping the government closed is healthcare — specifically, the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies that have been in place since 2021 and further lowered premium costs for Americans. Democrats want the enhanced subsidies extended, Republicans don't. Without them, folks who rely on healthcare plans they bought on the exchange will see their premiums skyrocket. But there are other countries with private insurance options where healthcare doesn't cost so much that people risk going without it.
