We're talking real-deal confidence—the kind you build while you're ugly-crying in your car between school drop-off and a board meeting. In this conversation with media pro and author Lynn Smith, we dig into the messy intersection of courage and confidence, why perfectionism and your “brain bully” are killing your clarity, and how to model bravery for your kids (and, TBH, for yourself). Spoiler: brave isn't something you are; it's something you do. We get into naming the inner critic, reframing fear, and choosing the next right step—even when quitting is actually the bravest move. Oh, and Lynn wrote the children's book on this: Just Keep Going—for kids and the grown-ups who love them. What we cover: The fear loop CEOs and six-year-olds share—and how to break it “Brain bully” vs. inner knowing: name it, reframe it, tell it to sit down Perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and the confidence–courage flywheel When to keep going…and when letting go is the most courageous choice Raising confident kids by modeling it (not lecturing it) Simple body-based resets for big feelings (yours and theirs) Because whether you're running a company or raising tiny humans, confidence isn't about never feeling fear — it's about learning to move with it, breathe through it, and just keep going. In this sharp, high-energy episode of The Determined Society, host Shawn French sits down with the iconic Kelly Killoren Bensimon — model, author, Real Housewives of New York alum, and powerhouse luxury real-estate broker — for a raw conversation about mental toughness, authenticity, and legacy. Kelly opens up about the lessons learned after fame, how she rebuilt her identity beyond reality TV, and why music and curiosity still fuel her every move. From embracing “minnow vs shark” mindset shifts to navigating public perception, Kelly shares what it really takes to evolve in the spotlight while staying grounded in family and purpose. The two dive into double standards, resilience, and the underrated power of healthy coping mechanisms — from horses and polo to parenting and purpose. Kelly reveals how she transformed criticism into clarity, leveraged her Midwest roots for grit, and turned chaos into creativity through focus, curiosity, and real work. By the end, you'll see that behind the headlines and the high-rises is a woman defined not by fame, but by fearless reinvention. Key Takeaways: -Music fuels mindset — every success story starts with a rhythm. -Minnows can become sharks through curiosity and work ethic. -Public perception ≠ personal truth — redefine yourself through action. -Mental toughness and self-awareness outlast hype. -Curiosity is the secret weapon in business and life. -Authenticity wins — people feel what's real. -Family and legacy matter more than fame or followers. Firstly I would like to thank my friend and podcast sponsor Shaun Sargent of STAIT FOR MEN for making this amazing episode happen. This week, I had the honor of speaking with Mike Bates- Former MOD Covert Operations Leader, Commando & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt turned solo ocean rower, community builder and entrepreneur. There's no-one in the world with Mike's experience.Mike brings exceptional credibility: he served two decades in the UK's Royal Marines and the Ministry of Defence, rising to become a human-intelligence specialist and covert counter-terrorism operations leader ( AKA James Bond, and leading other Bond teams) and was the first officer in the MOD to pass all the required front-line counter-terror courses.Following that elite career, he turned ultra-endurance athlete, completing the 3,000-mile solo row across the Atlantic in just 46 days 6 hours 10 minutes — the fastest Briton and first solo finisher of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. He now co-founds and leads the mission-driven community Unify Men (and its predecessor brand NXT45) focused on men's health, connection, and transformation. His core insight is powerful:The ultimate act of courage for a man is vulnerability. Strength isn't proven by suppressing emotion — it's shown in connection, authenticity, and the bravery to face one's own trauma. Mike's lived experience (in covert ops, ultra-endurance rowing, and men's transformation) underpins that insight. Through immersing men in nature, building safe circles, practicing martial arts (like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), and emphasising fundamentals such as sleep and relinquishing ego, he provides a roadmap for modern masculinity.Today, Mike's work with Unify Men gives fathers and men a tribe, creates spaces where men can share truth without shame, and champions that the smartest fight is the one you don't take. He emphasises: prioritise sleep, step outside (into nature), get comfortable with vulnerability, de-escalate ego, and start telling the truth about what you feel.Bottom line: This isn't another “tough guy” message — it's a call to men to live longer, love deeper, and lead better. Mike shows that real power comes when a man stops pretending…and starts connecting. Today, Mike is a man on a mission to help others to become the best version of themselves. Drawing on his own unique, remarkable experiences he inspires and empowers others to live life without limits.

When someone admits they're struggling at 2 AM, should they have to wait until morning to talk to another human? Kelly shares her TED stage conversation with Dr. Allison Darcy, creator of Woebot, an AI therapy tool used by over 1.5 million people. From questions about who profits when we share our deepest fears to whether perfect AI responsiveness might make us reject messy human relationships, this conversation explores what happens when technology enters our most vulnerable moments. Through reflections on business models, red lines and the surprising ways people use AI as practice for real conversations, Kelly and Allison wrestle with whether these tools are helping us become more human or less—and how we might tell the difference before it's too late. We present a deeply moving conversation with host Shawn French as he sits down with John O'Leary — bestselling author, motivational speaker, and the real-life inspiration behind the new William H. Macy film Soul on Fire. At just nine years old, John survived an explosion that left him with burns over 100% of his body and a 0% chance to live. What followed was nothing short of miraculous — a story not of one man's toughness, but of an entire community showing up when it mattered most. John and Shawn dive into the transformative power of love, faith, and community, exploring how the people around us can literally bring us back to life. John shares how his parents' fierce love, Jack Buck's unwavering mentorship, and his wife Beth's quiet strength helped shape a life of purpose. He opens up about the fine line between victimhood and victory, and how choosing to serve others became the ultimate path to healing. The two also reflect on Soul on Fire, the film that immortalizes John's journey — including personal touches like his wife's actual wedding dress and his late father's powerful final scene on set. Together, they reveal how acts of kindness, no matter how small, can create ripples that outlive us all. This isn't a story about survival. It's a masterclass in what it means to live — fully, vulnerably, and for others. Key Takeaways: -You can be a victim or a victor — the choice is always yours. -Community is the most powerful medicine for healing. -Tough love isn't cruelty; it's the pathway to freedom. -Mentorship and service are legacy multipliers — they outlive us. -True love sees beyond scars, ego, and circumstance. -Every act of kindness has a ripple effect far beyond what you'll ever see. At 13, Gina Rinehart read a book that would help shape her worldview – Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. The novel's capitalist underpinnings promote the idea that people should strive to be their best industrial selves. In this episode, we explore how these values are playing out in Rinehart's life today, including her proposal to build a coalmine in Canada's Rocky Mountains. And we hear how author and environmental campaigner Tim Winton views her efforts to prevent an overhaul of Australia's environmental laws
Gina Rinehart tops Australia's rich list, worth almost $40bn. She's also a climate sceptic, a Trumpette and a litigant – even against her own kids. Her life reads like a script from the TV series Succession. Senior correspondent Sarah Martin has spoken to her critics and her defenders to try and understand who Gina Rinehart really is. In this episode, Martin starts with her childhood, and the enormous influence of her father, Lang Hancock
How does Gina Rinehart, like her father before her, use wealth and power to influence Australian politics? Rinehart's first major foray into the political spotlight was successfully lobbying against Labor's mining super-profit tax in the early 2010s. But what did she learn from her father, Lang Hancock, who campaigned to overturn the iron ore export embargo in the 1950s, setting the foundation for their family fortune?
We unpack the bitter rivalries, court battles and family conflicts behind the Hancock fortune, and consider a fundamental question: is Rinehart a mining heiress or is she a self-made mining magnate? We look at her crowning achievement to date in her time at the helm of Hancock Prospecting – owning and operating her own iron mine at Roy Hill, something her father was never able to do
Twenty years ago, John Hancock had dinner with his mother, Gina Rinehart. He says it's the last positive interaction he had with her. In an in-depth interview, he explains how his relationship with her fell apart and discusses a high-stakes legal case that could threaten the foundations of her empire
It's the portrait of Gina Rinehart that launched 1,000 memes, went viral globally and became Australia's Mona Lisa. But it's also a symbol of how wealth intersects with other areas of life, including art and sport. How does Rinehart use her money to control her image – and what would she rather you don't see? This episode is about power and control, and the colonial history of Australia. It contains references to outdated offensive language and events that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may find distressing. It also contains the names of Indigenous Australians who have died
In the previous episode, we covered historical claims made over the years that Lang Hancock, Gina's father, had two unacknowledged daughters with separate Indigenous women. Now, the daughter of Sella Robinson, one of the Indigenous women who claimed to be Hancock's daughter, speaks publicly for the first time
Gina Rinehart's father, Lang Hancock, is well known as a pioneer of Australia's iron ore industry but few realise Hancock started his mining career on a smaller scale and digging for a different substance – blue asbestos.
