Do you work more for more money? Or work less for more time? For some, this is the ultimate economic choice. Every single worker in the European Union is guaranteed four weeks of paid vacation. No matter how long they've been at a company. No matter how low paying the job is. Vacation is a right. In fact, all but one of the richest countries in the world guarantees paid vacation, except: the U.S. According to a 2019 study, people in Japan get 10 paid vacation days and 15 paid holidays; in Australia it's 20 paid vacation days and 8 paid holidays; and in Spain it's 25 paid vacation days and 14 paid holidays. And it's not just a rich country thing: Mexico, Afghanistan, Thailand, Tanzania - they all guarantee paid vacation from work, at least in the formal job sector. In the U.S: Zero paid vacation days and zero paid holidays. So, why is the United States the outlier? We go to several labor economists and historians, to find out what makes Americans different from Europeans. It's a winding journey, so maybe put in a request for some paid time off and take a listen!Note: This episode originally ran in 2023.Some articles we mention in this episode:“No Vacation Nation”“Study: A Record 768 Million U.S. Vacation Days Went Unused in ‘18, Opportunity Cost in the Billions”“Why the US is one of only a few countries with no paid time off”This episode was hosted by Sarah Gonzalez, produced by Sam Yellowhorse Kesler, edited by Jess Jiang, engineered by Maggie Luthar, and fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. Today’s headlines, as do most stories that the world deems important, remind us that we are just passing through this life. Whether it’s aliens, mass immigration and movements of populations of people, the economy or whatever we are all told is important, we as believers have to remember it’s all temporary. A considerable amount of what occupies the headlines are mere “roadside attractions”. Now, when we talk about Israel and point to their redemption drawing nigh, that is something worth taking note of and we do regularly. Those are Mile Markers, things that show us how late the hour is. And truly we are just passing through – that’s also important as a mindset. And with the anniversary of the opening of Route 66 and how it transported so many Americans to “see the USA in your Chevrolet”, we’re thinking the only change of address we desire is our heavenly home. We talk about OPEC and why it is integral to the Middle East and will be for some time. We talk about the temple and the youth who want it rebuilt in their lifetimes; also about mass immigration and how it’s designed to erase the West and the Judeo-Christian worldview. A full hour on today’s edition of SUFTT.
For decades, homeownership has been one of America's most trusted paths to building wealth. But what happens when that equity doesn't deliver the financial security retirees expect? In this episode of Real Estate News for Investors, Kathy Fettke breaks down new research showing that older homeowners may be selling their homes for less than younger sellers, often due to deferred maintenance, outdated properties, and the growing appeal of quick cash offers. With Americans over 70 now holding trillions in housing wealth, this emerging trend could create both financial challenges for retirees and new opportunities for real estate investors. Kathy explores what's driving the discount, why today's buyers are more selective, and how this demographic shift could reshape the housing market in the years ahead. Josh opens the show discussing the major victories scored by the MAGA movement in Tuesday’s primary elections across the country. He breaks down what the results mean for the future of the Republican Party, why the Right appears to be rejecting its fringe voices, and how Democrats continue doubling down on radical policies and rhetoric. Josh also reacts to troubling comments from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and explains why Democrats are once again being called out for hypocrisy. Later in the show, Josh welcomes Eric Metaxas, who appears in the new documentary "Revolutionary America". Why 91% of Millionaires Own a Business (And You're Missing Out) with Garrett Gunderson Jeff Dudan's free digital copy of his book What if the financial advice you've been following your whole life is actually keeping you broke? In this episode of the Unemployable Podcast, Jeff Dudan sits down with New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, comedian, and entrepreneur Garrett Gunderson - founder of Multiplier and author of 'What Would the Rockefellers Do?' and 'Killing Sacred Cows' - for a conversation that will completely rewire how you think about money, wealth, and retirement. Garrett shares why 91% of people worth $5 million or more own a business, how the Rockefeller Method can be started with just $50/month, and why the traditional retirement plan is setting most Americans up for failure. He breaks down the 4 I's costing entrepreneurs thousands every year (IRS, interest, investments, and insurance), explains the critical difference between financial independence and financial freedom, and reveals the tax-free business exit strategy most owners never hear about. You'll also hear Garrett's powerful philosophy on involving your kids in financial conversations, why diversification is often distraction in disguise, the truth about debt vs. equity, and how he went from losing two business partners in a plane crash to selling his company and filming a comedy special on Amazon Prime. Whether you're a first-generation business owner, a seasoned entrepreneur planning your exit, or someone questioning the conventional save-and-hope financial model, this episode delivers practical, contrarian, and often counterintuitive strategies for keeping more of what you make and building a life you don't want to retire from. Phil Singleton spent years operating in the shadows — tier one SAS, Operation Nimrod, the Iranian Embassy siege — and then quietly disappeared into a second career training thousands of law enforcement officers across the U.S. as Training Director for Heckler & Koch. He doesn't carry a cell phone, doesn't chase recognition, and until now has been one of the most quietly consequential British operators most Americans have never heard of. This week Phil pulls back the curtain on what it really took to earn that winged dagger, what it was like to storm a foreign embassy in the middle of London on live television, and why — at 72 — he's perfectly content stacking bananas in a grocery store produce aisle with zero regrets. Massie vs Trump. San Diego Mosque Attackers Murder 3. LIRR Strike Deal. Another Buffalo Heartbreaker. Wemby Dazzles. It's Tuesday, May 19th — a huge primary day in Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Alabama — and 3,557,000 independent Americans are being locked out of the elections deciding their representation. Paul Rieckhoff runs a solo briefing on the closed-primary problem nobody in the rigged two-party system wants to talk about: taxpayer-funded elections, run in public schools by public poll workers, that exclude anyone who refuses to put on a jersey. With 93% of House races and 80% of Senate races already decided by primaries, this isn't a procedural quirk — it's a structural assault on representative democracy. Paul also unpacks the Trump-versus-Tom Massie proxy war in Kentucky, including the Secretary of Defense leaving his post to campaign against a sitting Republican congressman, the Georgia governor's race chaos between Burt Jones and Brad Raffensperger, and Trump's ever-expanding billion-dollar White House construction project that's quietly morphed from a ballroom into something that sounds a lot more like a bunker. He closes with the heroism of Amin Abdullah at the San Diego mosque shooting, a Long Island Railroad strike resolved in workers' favor, and the young helpers showing up across America when it counts. Trump's Approval Drops to 37%. Reporting Isn't Treason. Ebola Outbreak Global Health Emergency. Ukraine Hits Moscow. LIRR Goes on Strike. Trump Wins Again: Takes Out Cassidy. It's Manosphere Monday and Paul Rieckhoff is broadcasting from high above New York City with a solo briefing built for the angry middle. The New York Times has confirmed that Navy SEALs escorted Cash Patel and nine others on what the Pentagon itself called a 'VIP snorkel event' next to the underwater tomb of the USS Arizona — one week before Memorial Day. Paul says if anything is impeachable, this is. Meanwhile the administration has quietly stood up a $1.8 billion fund to pay off allies of the president, Pete Hegseth is openly campaigning for House Republicans in Kentucky, ICE is banging on doors without warrants, and Trump's approval has cratered to 37%. From there the briefing widens out: U.S. combat operations in Nigeria most Americans will never hear about, an Ebola outbreak the WHO is tracking while we sit outside the organization, classified intelligence about Cuban drones being shaped into a pretext for war, Ukraine hitting a Moscow oil refinery, and a Senate purge that just took out Bill Cassidy. Paul closes with a Memorial Day call to action, a tribute to Wells Crowther — the man in the red bandana — and a reminder that 45% of this country is now independent. We're not politically homeless. The Trump administration is moving to roll back limits on some PFAS, the toxic "forever chemicals" found in the drinking water of millions of Americans. The Biden-era rule set the first national drinking-water limits for several PFAS compounds. But industry groups argued the standards were legally flawed and too costly to meet. Are we really alone in the universe? The question of whether there is extraterrestrial life is one of our oldest questions. And few nations on Earth are more captivated by the prospect of life on Mars than the United States. President Barack Obama recently made headlines by stating he believes aliens are real. And around 41% of Americans believe aliens have made contact with planet Earth. In May 2026, Orwell Prize-winning journalist Daniel Lavelle joined acclaimed filmmaker and podcaster Jon Ronson to discuss why humans, and Americans in particular, are so obsessed with encountering aliens. Drawing from Lavelle's new book, Chasing Aliens, they explored an extraordinary road trip through America's UFO heartlands – a journey that led Lavelle from fringe believers and interdimensional crystal rituals at the clandestine Skinwalker Ranch, all the way to Harvard astrophysicists and the corridors of government itself. He revealed what he found: not just the truth about UFOs, but something far more unexpected – a deeply moving story about loneliness, belief, and our unshakeable need not to be alone in the cosmos. --- Image 1: https://www.war.gov/UFO/#NASA-UAP-VM6-Apollo-17-1972 Image 2: https://www.war.gov/UFO/#NASA-UAP-VM6-Apollo-17-1972 "GIMBAL" video: video: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gimbal_The_First_Official_UAP_Footage_from_the_USG_for_Public_Release.webm "GOFAST" video: Video: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Go_Fast_Official_USG_Footage_of_UAP_for_Public_Release.webm --- This is the first instalment of a two-part episode. Give to help Chris make Truce Ronald Reagan's economic policies, often referred to as “Reaganomics,” were based on supply-side economics. His administration focused on reducing the role of government in the economy by cutting taxes, especially for corporations and high-income individuals, with the belief that this would stimulate investment, job creation, and overall economic growth. The Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 was a cornerstone of this approach, slashing income tax rates across the board. Reagan also prioritized deregulation, aiming to reduce government oversight in industries such as banking, energy, and transportation, under the idea that less regulation would foster greater business efficiency and innovation. At the same time, Reagan significantly increased defense spending while aiming to cut domestic programs, which contributed to a substantial rise in the federal budget deficit. While the economy experienced a period of strong growth and declining inflation during his presidency—especially after the early 1980s recession—critics argue that the benefits were unevenly distributed. Income inequality widened, and the national debt tripled by the end of his two terms. So... was it worth it? Who benefited from his programs? And what does that say about us as a nation? Learn more about everything at our home page www.diabetes-connections.com Episode transcript: XX Dexcom announces some features of it's next generation CGM – the G8. We've been talking about this with CEO Jake Leach for a while now – it will be a 50% smaller with what they're calling advanced sensing capabilities. According to Leach, G8 will adapt to the physiologic variability of each user. It has additional technology built in, based on a new silicon chip design and algorithm. 15 day wear is now the baseline for all Dexcom sensors moving forward. At launch the G8 will only measure glucose but the plan is for a multi-analyte version to follow. That would measure ketones and potassium. Ketones we know – but potassium is very important for people with kidney and possible for people taking some diabetes meds. It's an interesting space to watch.. btw, analyte is just a medical word for the specific thing you're measuring – the target of the test you're running. we're going to hear that word a lot I think.. Looks like an FDA submission for the G8 next year.. with an outside the US launch the following year. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/dexcom-unveils-next-gen-g8-cgm/ XX Glucotrack has submitted its implantable continuous blood glucose monitor (CBGM) for FDA IDE, that's investigational device exemption and would enable the company to initiate a U.S. clinical study for the fully implantable technology. Rutherford, New Jersey-based Glucotrack's device features no on-body external component. The company aims to offer it for three years of continuous, accurate blood glucose monitoring for a more convenient, less intrusive solution. Unlike traditional CGMs that measure glucose in interstitial fluid, the CBGM measures glucose levels directly from the blood. The implant goes five centimeters within the subclavian vein. Glucotrack's active implantable device has a small battery and some electronics that go just under the skin in the pectoral region. The location of the implant is not in a major vessel, but the implant can measure real-time glucose levels as pulsatile blood flows over the tip of the sensor. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/glucotrack-submits-long-term-implantable-cbgm-fda-ide/ XX PharmaSens today announced the publication of data from the first clinical study evaluating its all-in-one insulin patch pump offering. The all-in-one pump pairs the Niaa Essential insulin patch pump with the SynerG continuous glucose monitor (CGM) sensor developed by Pacific Diabetes Technologies. However, this system would be one device that features both the pump and CGM technology. PharmaSens and SiBionics also have a collaboration aimed at developing the all-in-one solution. They are jointly developing the next-generation Niia insulin patch pump with a SiBionics CGM. PharmaSens expects a second feasibility study in the second quarter to evaluate the next-generation pump with SiBionics' CGM. PharmaSens says the clinical feasibility study of Niia demonstrated for the first time ever that the combined offering is, in fact, feasible. It believes its device addresses the need for alternatives to multi-device diabetes management. systems. Aggregated MARD for the investigational device came in at 11.6%. A MARD target of less than 10% is considered ideal for CGM devices, but PharmaSens said that, in the context of the early feasibility study, the results were encouraging and provide evidence supporting the development of an all-in-one system. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/pharmasens-efs-insulin-patch-pump-cgm/ XX XX ViCentra launches the newest version of the Kaleido pump system in Europe. This is that small colorful pump, with Diabeloops algorithm and the Dexcom G7. It'll be in Germany and the Netherlands later this summer. https://hellokaleido.com/vicentra-announces-commercial-launch-of-new-smartphone-controlled-kaleido-automated-insulin-delivery-patch-pump-system/-- XX Diabeloop just got CE Mark approval for DBLG2 integrations – it's latest AID platform the company has kicked off the gradual European launch of the technology. It currently offers DBLG2 as a smartphone application on Android, with iOS integration coming soon. As you just heard, it's integrated with kaleido and the company says it plans to make additional configuration for DBLG2 with alternative pumps "available soon." Running on a user's smartphone, DBLG2 works as a self-learning algorithm. It continuously analyzes glucose data, calculates insulin needs in real time and automatically adjusts delivery. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/diabeloop-fda-next-gen-algorithm-g7/ XX Among adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the initiation of GLP-1-based therapy was associated with a lower risk for all-cause death, several cardiovascular outcomes, all-cause hospitalisations, and hypoglycaemia, without a higher risk for diabetic ketoacidosis. METHODOLOGY: Researchers in Greece conducted a retrospective cohort study utilising real-world data from a global health research network to evaluate the association between GLP-1-based therapy and cardiovascular and renal outcomes in adults with T1D. A total of 4088 patients receiving GLP-1-based therapies (median age, 43 years; 34.3% men) were propensity score matched with an equal number of patients not receiving the treatment. The risk for hypoglycaemia was lower with GLP-1-based therapy (hazard ratio, 0.72; P = .021); however, the risk for diabetic ketoacidosis did not differ significantly between the two groups. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/glp-1-drugs-tied-cardiovascular-benefits-t1d-2026a1000fbx XX Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) today announced detailed results from two late-phase trials showing that people with obesity maintained their weight loss long term with either Foundayo or lower-dose Zepbound after switching from higher doses of injectable incretin therapy. The findings from SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN and ATTAIN-MAINTAIN, were presented at the 33rd European Congress on Obesity (ECO) and published in The Lancet and Nature Medicine, respectively. "Weight regain remains one of the biggest challenges in obesity care, and is often the result of treatment interruptions that cause biology to work against patients, undoing the progress they've made," said Louis J. Aronne, M.D., FACP, DABOM, founder and Chair Emeritus of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, former president of The Obesity Society, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, world-renowned obesity specialist and Lilly consultant. "These medicines can be used for long-term maintenance today, and results from SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN and ATTAIN-MAINTAIN provide additional evidence of their potential when switching from higher doses of injectable incretin therapy." https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/lillys-foundayo-and-lower-dose-zepbound-helped-people-maintain XX Scientists in Sweden have developed a more reliable way to create insulin-producing cells from human stem cells. These lab-grown cells not only respond strongly to glucose but were also able to restore blood sugar control when transplanted into diabetic mice. When transplanted into diabetic mice, the cells gradually restored the animals' ability to regulate blood sugar. Long way to go, as we say with most of these mice studies. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/05/260505234620.htm XX Interesting look at how the body controls sugar storage – apparently this finding challenges long-standing biology concepts and could open new directions for disease treatment. Published in Nature, the study describes a potential method for directly reducing glycogen, the stored form of sugar in the body. These scientists discovered that glycogen can be directly regulated by ubiquitin, a protein best known for marking damaged proteins for recycling or removal. The study is the first to show that ubiquitin can regulate glycogen in humans, overturning more than 50 years of scientific understanding. Excess glycogen is also associated with more common health problems, including diabetes, obesity, liver disease, and heart disease. https://scitechdaily.com/scientists-just-rewrote-biology-hidden-mechanism-could-transform-diabetes-treatment/ XX A new Oklahoma law will give parents the option to have their children screened for Type 1 Diabetes. The measure passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the Legislature and takes effect Nov 1. Oklahoma consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of diabetes and diabetes-related deaths. The law gives parents access to antibody testing that can detect risk years before symptoms develop, helping families take preventive action and avoid emergency room visits. https://journalrecord.com/2026/05/11/oklahoma-law-expands-access-type-1-diabetes-screening/ XX More to come including a new study trying to figure out why some people are more likely to develop diabetes, a look at cannabis and preventing metabolic disorders, and XX A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study has identified key differences in human pancreatic islet cells that may help explain why some people are more likely to develop diabetes. Researchers found that the mix of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas varies widely from person to person, and that variation plays a central role in how the body regulates blood sugar. The study involved a deep dive into islet cell function that is linked to donor traits associated with observable characteristics, or phenotype, such as sex, race and ethnicity, as well as genetic information, or genotype, including predicted ancestry and genetic risk for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The findings highlight that islet cell composition, rather than the physical size and shape of islets, is a key factor in regulating hormone release. The team found that the makeup of pancreatic islets plays a major role in how effectively they release insulin and glucagon — key hormones that regulate blood glucose. Islets with a higher proportion of insulin-producing beta cells showed stronger insulin secretion in response to various stimuli, while higher levels of alpha and delta cells were generally linked to reduced insulin output. In addition, the researchers found that islet hormone secretion is affected by donor traits, such as sex, race and ethnicity and their genetic makeup, including ancestry predicted from genetic testing and genetic risk for type 2 diabetes. Combined, the findings of the study have significant implications for understanding the factors that may predispose people to diabetes. "This study is the tip of the iceberg," said Dr. Evans-Molina. "We hope this dataset becomes useful to the entire diabetes research community and that researchers use it to answer questions about the genotype-phenotype correlation within these data." https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-funded-study-maps-human-pancreatic-islet-cells-offering-new-clues-diabetes-risk XX XX XX Research published recently in JAMA Network Open offers illuminating evidence suggesting there is a positive association between GLP-1 agonists—drugs commonly used to treat obesity and diabetes—and better outcomes among breast cancer patients. "This study suggests that GLP-1 drugs may offer protective benefits potentially improving survival and recurrence risk in some female patients with breast cancer – whether this is related to weight control, improve cardiovascular health or other mechanisms remains to be studied," said study senior author Bernard F. Fuemmeler, Ph.D., MPH, associate director for population sciences and the Gordon D. Ginder, M.D., Chair in Cancer Research at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. Breast cancer patients who are also obese or have type 2 diabetes experience more aggressive cancer growth and worse outcomes. Prior studies have shown that weight loss treatment and surgery following a breast cancer diagnosis are associated with improved heart health and increased survival. What are GLP-1 drugs? Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs). Approved to treat type 2 diabetes in 2005 and weight management in 2021. Impacts on breast cancer survival and recurrence are still unclear. Since 2020, the use of these drugs has increased dramatically, where approximately 12% of Americans have used GLP-1s for weight loss, according to a RAND report. The research findings Through a retrospective cohort study examining the electronic health records of more than 840,000 breast cancer patients who were diagnosed between 2006 and 2023, the results suggest there is a potential link between GLP-1 RAs and improved outcomes among breast cancer patients who are also obese or have type 2 diabetes. GLP-1 RA use was associated with an overall lower risk of death from any cause over a 10-year follow-up period among breast cancer patients. Additionally, breast cancer survivors who used GLP1-RAs for diabetes or obesity had a significantly lower risk of their cancer returning over 10 years following their initial treatment. "Our findings align with emerging preclinical research and contribute to a growing body of literature related to GLP-1 RA use in oncology settings," said study lead author Kristina L. Tatum, PsyD, MS, of the VCU School of Public Health. What's next? Further studies are needed to understand the biological mechanisms, if any, between GLP-1 RAs and breast cancer outcomes. The research team intends to further evaluate these correlations through randomized clinical trials. "Our study underscores the potential of GLP-1 RAs as an adjunct strategy for improving cancer-related outcomes among patients with breast cancer, although clinical trials are needed to inform effective therapeutic approaches and clinical decision making," Fuemmeler said. https://www.oncology-central.com/could-glp-1-receptor-agonists-improve-outcomes-for-breast-cancer-patients-with-obesity-or-with-type-2-diabetes/ XX Researchers at UC Riverside gave cannabis to obese mice and found that not only did the rodents lose weight, but when given a concentrated cannabis oil, the mice also saw striking benefits in their metabolic function. DiPatrizio said his team studied the issue to better understand why cannabis users show significant reductions in weight and risk for diabetes compared with nonusers. "We would think that chronic cannabis users would be eating more and weigh more, but it's just the opposite," DiPatrizio said. Scientists are increasingly examining the possibility that cannabis compounds could fight obesity or metabolic disorders like diabetes. Cannabinoids interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, which partially controls nearly every aspect of our physiology, including metabolism and appetite. That creates the possibility that targeting this widespread system could unlock new therapies for these conditions. https://www.sfgate.com/cannabis/article/cannabis-weight-loss-california-study-22255328.php XX A new campaign launched by diaTribe and Genentech aims to empower and educate people about diabetes-related eye disease. Here's what you can do today to protect your eye health. To help address these barriers, diaTribe and Genentech partnered to launch All Eyes on DME, a new campaign that aims to spread awareness and educate people at-risk for or living with diabetes-related eye conditions like DME. Also partnering in the campaign is actor and comedian Damon Wayans, who wanted to share his journey (and, of course, a joke or two) with type 2 diabetes to open up the conversation about what is often a stigmatized or less talked about topic: eye health and diabetes. One of these important conversations happened recently at the All Eyes on DME launch in New York City, where Wayans joined a panel of experts, advocates, and people living with DME to talk about diabetes-related eye disease and how to help prevent it. https://www.alleyesondme.com/dme-in-the-spotlight.html https://diatribe.org/diabetes-complications/all-eyes-dme-new-campaign-spotlights-eye-health-and-diabetes
illiam J. Federer is a nationally known speaker, historian, author, and president of Amerisearch, Inc. He's the speaker on The American Minute daily broadcast. In late April, 2026, there was a thorough reading of the Bible at the Museum of the Bible. While you may not agree with every participant, the Word was read. As Scripture says, God's Word will not return unto Him void, but it will accomplish that which He pleases. It's the Word of God that is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. The Bible tells us in Romans 10:17 that "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." It's the Word of God that changes the heart of man. Michele Bachmann, Dean of the Regent School of Government said, "There would be no America without the Bible. It is the foundation...and it's important that we reacquaint ourselves with its principles." It's disturbing that in the American Bible Society's 2026 State of the Bible report, only 17% of Americans told pollsters that they have read the entire Bible, another 17% said they have read "most", 14% indicate they've read "about half" 35% said "a little" 10% said "none" and 7% said they were not sure if they've ever read the Bible. As foundational as the Bible is, Jim asked William to come and address the Bible's influence on America. So don't miss this look back at the impact of the Bible at the time of the Pilgrims, at the time leading up to the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War, and also its influence since we became a nation. It's a history modern skeptics don't like, but it's the truth.
Today's Poll Question at Smerconish.com: Who do you want enforcing traffic laws, AI or cops? After receiving a $300 automated school bus violation notice tied to his own Jeep, Michael Smerconish dives into the growing role of artificial intelligence in policing everyday life. From AI-powered traffic cameras to license plate readers now operating in thousands of communities, this episode explores the tradeoff between efficiency, safety, privacy, and human judgment. Michael connects his personal experience to a much larger national debate: are Americans comfortable replacing police discretion with algorithms and automated enforcement systems? Plus, he reflects on yesterday's heated Iran poll results and why voters may be letting politics cloud national security judgment. Listen here, then vote! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Josh opens the show breaking down the high-stakes Kentucky primary as anti-Trump Congressman Thomas Massie faces off against Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallen. Josh explains what a Massie victory would mean for President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, while also sounding the alarm over polls showing the president sitting under 40% in key numbers. Josh also reacts to comments from California Governor Gavin Newsom about a potential “break the glass” scenario if two Republicans advance in California’s governor primary, exposing just how panicked Democrats are becoming about losing control. Plus, Josh takes aim at remarks from New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani regarding a famous quote from President Ronald Reagan. While Josh says he doesn’t fully agree with Reagan’s quote in today’s economy, he argues Mamdani is completely detached from reality for claiming hard-working Americans can’t still get ahead. Josh also exposes the outrageous ways New York City is spending taxpayer dollars, dives into the true meaning behind “Nakba,” and explains why the release of a recent propaganda video should outrage every American.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For decades, Americans' views on abortion remained surprisingly consistent, even amid fierce political battles. But the 2022 Dobbs decision sparked a major shift. In the new book ‘Not Going Back,' the authors trace changing public attitudes on abortion from Roe v. Wade through the 2024 election and into 2025, examining how debates over access, regulation, and government involvement continue to reshape American politics.
Text me a question I might answer through the showRecent studies indicate that about one in four Americans experience some form of family estrangement. This statistic is alarming, as many individuals report feeling deeply troubled by this estrangement. A significant portion of these estrangements occur between parents and their adult children, emphasizing the need for understanding and addressing familial relationships. In this podcast and video, expert guest Dr. Tamsen Thorpe and I explore the causes, implications and solutions for family estrangement, drawing on insights from experts in psychology and family dynamics. What is Family Estrangement?Family estrangement refers to a cutoff in communication or contact between family members. It ranges from complete no contact to limited interactions, such as only connecting through social media. It is not always a straightforward situation; some families might maintain superficial ties while feeling emotionally distant. Understanding these nuances is crucial for addressing the underlying issues that contribute to estrangement.Support the showThis show was created with love on my volunteer time. Last March, President Donald Trump issued an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.”It mandated a shift in how American history is portrayed in federal institutions, with a goal of eliminating “improper, divisive or anti-American ideology.”Instead, according to the executive order, the focus should be on a more “patriotic” narrative. And to ensure that happens, funding was cut for anything that “degrades shared American values” or “divides Americans by race.”This order applied largely to federal institutions, like the Smithsonian museums and the National Parks System. But here in Minnesota, the funding restrictions and shifts in ideology were felt immediately. History museum directors and curators — the people who collect and keep Minnesota history — were alarmed at what might be coming their way.So what happened? Were their fears realized?North Star Journey Live went to Mankato to find out. At the annual conference for the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums, Angela Davis hosted a live discussion to talk about the ramifications of the federal order in Minnesota. The war in Iran has cost Americans more than $40 billion in additional fuel costs, according to an analysis from Brown University's Watson School of International and Public Affairs. The costs go beyond just what Americans pay at the pump; higher diesel costs are factoring into rising prices for other consumer goods, too. This morning, we'll do the numbers. Plus, after a slowdown, "vertical dramas" are putting some Hollywood crews back to work.
The pigs are at the trough. Trump's expected overseas real estate income has tripled to $430 million in his second term. Eric Trump is doing deals in China while Taiwan goes unmentioned and Iran keeps arming the people killing Ukrainians and Americans. Nvidia's CEO is being paraded around as the administration floats opening AI chip markets to Beijing. Don Jr. is tied to a drone company that just landed a Pentagon contract — inside a defense budget heading toward $1.5 trillion, a 40% spike with no apparent guardrails on family conflicts of interest. This isn't politics. It's a national security fire sale, and the Angry Middle smells it. This solo briefing connects the dots the legacy press keeps siloed: the foreign income filings, the Saudi-linked licensing deals, the Pentagon trough, Kash Patel's reality-TV FBI tour, and the lesson from Hungary — that corruption, not ideology, is what finally moved Orban's voters. With 45% of Americans now independent and 60% of young people unaffiliated, the rigged two-party system is on notice. The question isn't whether people are furious. It's whether that fury gets channeled into November, into independent veteran candidates, and into the structural reforms — the Raskin list and beyond — that should already be law. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Join IVA and stand up to Trump's Forever Wars. -Learn more about Paul's work to elect a new generation of independent leaders with Independent Veterans of America. -Learn more about American Veterans for Ukraine here. -Remember Independent is an Attitude. -Learn more about The Headstrong Project for Veterans, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and Department of Veterans Affairs resources in your area. After Mayor Q took to Facebook to blame property owners and business owners for the change at iconic Town Topic Burgers to not stay open 24 hours, you had to figure he'd hear from them. And man, has he. We have the deets. A clearly liberal judge in Lawrence has decided that the new law in Kansas to keep adults from mutilating their kids and pouring drugs in them they weren't born to have... shouldn't be a law at all. This has ACLU money all over it. JD Vance is headed to KC, Trump warns Iran again and Cuba may be thinking of firing a couple drones at Americans as their oil has pretty much run out. The Royals horrible road trip ends with a win. One win. Andy Reid does a series of interviews and they all ask him about Mahomes week one. I found the best, most complete explanation of it all and will play it here. Eli Manning tells a great Marty Schottenheimer story, the NFL has "rest disparity" now and when dudes win in girls sports in California now, they have a special podium for both winners. In our Final Final, a big name celebrity cancels his singing tour as apparently nobody knew he had a band.

In America's frontier days, anyone diverting a town's creek water to their private, profiteering purpose was not merely considered wrong, but guilty of Biblical-level immorality. That was BBE, however – “Before Billionaire Ethics.” Today, a cohort of über-rich hucksters – including Bezos, Altman, Musk, and Zuckerberg – have unilaterally decreed that they are above such moral fussiness, entitled to exploit the scarce water resources of millions of Americans, especially in rural areas. They're not irrigating crops, but continuously spritzing hundreds of thousands of the super-computers they're “planting” in the hyperscale AI data centers being built across the country. These are “computer ranches,” digesting and constantly spewing out electronic data to run artificial intelligence bots that the tech billionaires are creating to replace us human workers.Jobs aside, each of these concrete complexes is a massive water hog. Amazon, Meta, and the rest use millions of gallons a day of fresh, unrecycled water, just to keep their computers cool. Hello – states like Texas face recurring drought, yet billionaires insist on draining our aquifers and rivers to water their computers! In Texas alone, more than 400 of these sprawling data centers have already been built or are under construction.Meanwhile, a grassroots “What The Hell” movement is spreading across the country. But don't expect billionaires to show even an iota of respect for the Common Good. Indeed, they're now funding an all-out PR blitz and political campaign to demonize these local rebellions. Worse, they are doubling down on their plutocratic power grab, demanding that Congress pre-emptively outlaw state and local officials from regulating, much less barring, these invasive schemes. To help battle these profiteering b******s, go to www.mediajustice.org/tools.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Dr. Michael Valdovinos is a board-certified clinical psychologist and U.S. Air Force veteran. His new book is Moral Injuries: When Good Conscience Suffers in a World of Hurt. His writing has appeared in The Guardian and Time Magazine. Valdovinos argues that the Age of Trump has inflicted a collective moral injury on millions of Americans — the psychological wound that comes from witnessing or being powerless to stop something that violates your deepest sense of right and wrong. He warns that a reckoning will soon be upon us all. Our collective exhaustion, confusion, and dread are normal responses to a profoundly abnormal social and political environment. Drawing on hard-earned experience as an instructor in the military's SERE program (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape) and work with the special operations community, Valdovinos offers wisdom many of us desperately need right now: Keep moving. Do not betray your values. Surrender is not an option. Chauncey DeVega reconvenes the secular church family, "marks out" over WrestleMania 42, and honors some of his favorite actors who have recently left this dimension of space and time and transitioned to the next Patrick Muldoon, Valerie Perrine, Matt DeCaro, and TV legend Sid Krofft. Knowing is half the battle. He explains how authoritarians use "hypernormalization" to disorient the public, drain their emotions, and ultimately create a state of learned helplessness among a targeted population. And Chauncey reflects on the failed assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents' dinner, the dangerous allure of conspiracism, and how too many people are lost in the surreal in this increasingly sick society.
