I recently visited the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for the 2025 Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale. They have this event every year in June and it's a wonderful gathering of some of the very finest Western and Native American Artists. It's basically all sculpture and paintings, and you have very traditional art, but you also have very contemporary art as well.I interviewed five different individuals for the podcast while I was there. They were all very gracious to give me their time to talk about their paintings and what they're currently doing. So it's a little less in-depth on the journey, but much more heavy on the process, which I like. It's interesting for me because that's usually not my thing as much as trying to figure out why individuals create art the way they do.So there's, a group of these podcasts and I'm going to have them come out once a week. This episode features legendary cowboy artist, Howard Post.

Our lives are filled with innumerable choices, such as for the countless array of products for us to buy, assuming we can afford them. Our politics are often framed as a question of individual, not collective, choice such as the freedom to choose to have an abortion or the act of casting one's vote in secret, away from the eyes other others. Historian Sophia Rosenfeld argues that the notion that freedom means “the freedom to choose” has been central to modern Western society, but may be coming apart. (Encore presentation.) Through the wisdom of her own experience, she now guides other women to live emotionally healthy, embodied, and fulfilled lives.

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITSomething strange is happening to American society, and today's episode unpacks several bizarre headlines that reveal the unsettling transformation. From political extremism to desperate dating tactics, each story paints a picture of a nation struggling with shifting norms and values. We start by examining the troubling case of a former Zoran Mamdani intern who proudly declared that "activism is all jihad" while encouraging protesters to get arrested in defiance of what she called "the West's settler colonialism." This language signals a concerning radicalization within certain political movements that deserves greater attention. When activism becomes framed as holy war, we've crossed a dangerous threshold worth examining. The episode also tackles a disturbing criminal justice failure in Colorado, where a Democratic district attorney moved to dismiss charges against a transgender sex offender accused of attempting to kidnap an 11-year-old boy from an elementary school. Despite the suspect's criminal history, mental incompetency determinations led to the case being dropped, raising serious questions about public safety and accountability. A recall effort against the DA is now underway, reflecting community frustration with perceived failures to protect children.Perhaps most bizarre is the emerging trend of single women in Manhattan stealing men's lunches - specifically targeting finance professionals' salads - to obtain their names and contact them through LinkedIn for dates. This desperate dating tactic speaks volumes about the breakdown of normal social interactions in the post-pandemic, post-Me Too era. We explore why traditional approaches to dating have collapsed, leaving both men and women resorting to increasingly strange methods to make connections. What's happening to American society? Listen as we unpack these stories and more, including an Arizona homeowner fined by his HOA for giving out free bottled water. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Rebe Huntman, author of the book My Mother in Havana. Rebe's memoir traces her search to connect with her mother—thirty years after her death—among the gods and saints of Cuba. A former professional Latin and Afro-Cuban dancer and choreographer, for over a decade Rebe directed Chicago's award-winning Danza Viva Center for World Dance, Art & Music and its resident dance company, One World Dance Theater. She collaborates with native artists in Cuba and South America, and has been featured in LATINA Magazine, Chicago Magazine, and the Chicago Tribune, and on Fox and ABC. Rebe's essays, stories, and poems appear or are forthcoming in such places as The Southern Review, The Missouri Review, Parabola, Ninth Letter, The Cincinnati Review, and the PINCH, and have earned her an Ohio Individual Excellence Award as well as fellowships from the Macondo Writers' Conference, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Ragdale Foundation, PLAYA Residency, Hambidge Center, and Brush Creek Foundation. She holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from The Ohio State University and lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Delaware, Ohio. Find her at www. rebehuntman.com and on Instagram @rebehuntman. In my book review, I stated My Mother in Havana is a profound look at a woman who lost her mother at a young age and continues to grieve for years. It isn't until she goes to Havana that she finally finds peace. I fully expected to learn that Rebe's mother was Cuban - but she's not. However, Rebe's research about mothers and symbols of motherhood led to her Cuba where the Virgin Mary and the Cuban goddess of love, Ochún, are often intertwined. She wanted to understand this connection - and by doing so, she found healing. Rebe started life as a dancer and choreographer, and she shines a beautiful light on Cuban dances and rituals along with their gods and saints. I was mesmerized by her ability to throw off her Western upbringing and fully immerse herself in the culture as she tried to discover what makes a mother, what defines the divine feminine, and what she remembered of her own mother. I loved learning about the Afro-Cuban culture, their spiritual views, and the broader concept of motherhood. I think anyone who is a mother - or has a mother - will enjoy this book. In this festive wedding season, what if matrimony wasn't here to affirm the intensity of love between two people but a courageous submission to the unknown? Jennifer speaks with Stephen Jenkinson—cultural activist, author, ceremonialist—about the necessary burdens of love through the ritual of matrimony. With characteristic poetic edge, Stephen challenges the Western obsession with autonomy, authenticity and safety and gestures toward a redemptive cultural project: one of radical hospitality, memory, and the mystery of matrimony as a village-making act.Together they dive into:How matrimony is distinct from weddings and is rooted in mothering culture, not just romantic loveThe lost valence of patrimony, and what it asks of usThe role of the stranger in belonging and village makingWhy being “yourself” might not be the gift you think it isThis conversation reveals how ritual and ceremony thins the membrane with other worlds, makes congress with the divine and helps us honor what's come before —so we might find our place, and responsibility, in what's yet to come.Links & Resources:Order Stephen Jenkinson's newest book Matrimony: Ritual, Culture and the Heart's Work Learn more about Orphan Wisdom SchoolGet Jennifer's biweekly newsletter for radical encouragement on the hard mess of being humanConnect with Jennifer on Instagram or LinkedIn Gratitude for this show's theme song Inside the House, composed by the talented Yukon musician, multi-instrumentalist and sound artist Jordy Walker. In Episode 427 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Le Shrub, the author of the Shrubstack Substack who in his previous life was part of a famous team known for putting on “The Big Short” during the 2008 Great Financial Crisis. This recording is the result of a phone call Demetri made to Le Shrub to catch up on markets and life after returning from a recent trip to Italy where he spent time with some guests of the podcast discussing the effect that rapid technological changes are having on the evolution of human societies, culture, politics, and the economy. Le Shrub and Kofinas spend the first hour exploring some of these themes and the collective sense in Western countries that our governing systems, societal norms, and democratic institutions are unraveling at a quickening pace, hurdling us toward some inexorable economic and political reset. They shift their focus in the second hour toward the markets as Le Shrub educates listeners on his investment process and how it has fared in this increasingly chaotic information landscape where signal is often drowned by a cacophony of bad information spread by malicious actors, uninformed clout chasers, and bots. This includes a discussion about how Le Shrub has sought to monetize the second order effects of the most recent Trump tariffs on copper and the Brazilian economy. Just got back from three and a half weeks in Europe (still not sure what time zone I'm in), and Aaron Simmons and I dove straight into the deep end of why democracy feels like it's falling apart. We're wrestling with this massive question: what do you do when reason-giving just seems to fail completely - when people either dismiss everyone who disagrees as morally bankrupt, or assume their own views are so obviously correct that any pushback must be irrational? We wandered through everything from whether I should keep eating at this barbecue place covered in MAGA signs (still haven't decided), to how 81% of white evangelicals support the least Christian president we've ever had, to whether Western civilization can survive without its Christian roots, with a delightful detour into heavy metal pit ethics because apparently that's how we process political theory now. The whole conversation convinced us we need more voices thinking about these tensions together, which is why we're launching this Democracy in Tension summit where a bunch of our philosopher and theologian friends will tackle these questions from different angles - because honestly, Aaron and I don't have answers, but we're pretty sure the questions matter enough to keep wrestling with them, even if it makes us uncomfortable about where we get our barbecue. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube ONLINE SUMMIT: Democracy in Tension - NAVIGATING THE INTERLOCKING CRISES OF DEMOCRACY AND RELIGION Democracy today faces profound challenges – polarization, inequality, populist authoritarianism, and widespread cynicism are eroding the foundations of democratic life. Yet, what if democracy's greatest strength lies not in eliminating these tensions, but in productively embracing them? The summit will navigate the complex terrain between political equality and social justice, liberal freedom and democratic sovereignty, and ethical demands and political action. In this sweeping analysis, the speaker weaves together a narrative of escalating global conflict and internal division. At the center is China, portrayed as the hidden force behind Iran's nuclear ambitions, the Houthis' Red Sea attacks, and assassination plots against populist European leaders—all designed to expand Beijing's reach and cripple Western resolve. Meanwhile, back home, America faces what the speaker calls a “guerrilla civil war,” as left-wing activists, emboldened by political elites, violently target ICE agents and law enforcement to protect mass illegal immigration—allegedly essential for the Democrats' survival at the ballot box. With warnings of covert operations, compromised institutions, and the erosion of national sovereignty, the commentary frames the moment as an existential struggle on multiple fronts—one that will determine whether the United States can resist foreign influence, restore security, and reclaim democratic accountability.
These back-to-back monologues expose a worldview in which China has launched a multifront hidden war against the United States and its allies. The speaker argues that Beijing is circumventing tariffs by routing goods through dozens of countries and working through Iran and the Houthis to attack Western shipping, target U.S. naval forces, and undermine populist movements in Europe. At home, the narrative portrays an escalating “guerrilla civil war,” as left-wing activists allegedly intimidate ICE agents, exploit mass immigration as a political weapon, and attempt to terrorize law enforcement into submission. Blending geopolitical alarm with domestic outrage, the commentary paints a picture of coordinated threats abroad and within—driven by a Chinese quest for global dominance and enabled by U.S. political elites.
This intense monologue explores a sweeping theory that China is waging a hidden war against the United States and its allies by using Iran and the Houthis as proxies. The speaker details how China allegedly manipulates trade routes, assists attacks on Western naval forces, and attempts to assassinate populist leaders in Europe to protect its Belt and Road ambitions. It also claims China has infiltrated the Iranian nuclear program, weaponized economic leverage through tariffs, and is orchestrating violence against U.S. immigration enforcement. The transcript ends with fierce criticism of Democratic politicians and an urgent call to recognize this as a form of guerrilla warfare already underway.

The Western world has been shaped by two sexual revolutions. In a previous lecture, we saw how early Christianity ushered in the first revolution with a cosmic sexual code that overturned the oppressive sexual code of the ancient world. In this lecture, we'll explore how the sexual revolution of the twentieth century overturned the Christian code, resulting not in liberation but in disintegration of intimacy, trust and of our very humanity. To listen to the first lecture in this series click below. Please note that the ideas expressed in this lecture do not necessarily represent the views of L'Abri Fellowship. For more resources, visit the L'Abri Ideas Library at labriideaslibrary.org. In December 2024, the long and bloody stalemate in Syria broke down. In a transformation breathtaking for its suddenness and speed, President Bashar al-Assad, the beating heart of Arab authoritarianism, fled to Russia, his dungeons emptying as rebels overcame the Syrian army with scarcely a fight. Euphoria at the collapse of a government people never voted for was tempered by fear for the future. The victorious insurgents were supported by outside powers and had a track record of brutality comparable to Assad's in addition to religious fanaticism. Syrians—whose fragile, cosmopolitan mosaic has been repeatedly shattered by foreign-backed sectarians—faced rule by an avowedly Islamist regime that pledged to break with its past and show tolerance to all religious communities. In this illuminating and concise survey, Charles Glass shows how Assad's misrule, Sunni fundamentalism, and Western deceit combined to create and prolong the Syrian disaster, which since 2011 has claimed more than two hundred thousand lives and driven more than eight million people from their homes. Glass has reported extensively from the Middle East and travelled frequently in Syria for more than fifty years. Here he melds reportage, analysis, and history to provide an accessible overview of the origins and permutations defining the conflict, situating it clearly in the broader crises of the region. In this new and thoroughly revised edition of his earlier Syria Burning, Glass brings the story to the present, showing how we got here and what a post-Assad settlement might bring. About the Author: Charles Glass was ABC News Chief Middle East Correspondent from 1983 to 1993. Since 1973, he has covered wars in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. What defines a hero? Is it the glorious rage of a warrior like Achilles, or the cunning resilience of a survivor like Odysseus? In this episode, we journey back to ancient Greece to explore the two foundational models of heroism in Western literature: Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. We'll stand on the battlefields of Troy to analyze Achilles's quest for eternal glory (kleos) and then sail the treacherous seas with Odysseus on his arduous ten-year journey home (nostos). Words build worlds. What happens when our most important words—truth, freedom, justice—are stripped of their biblical meaning? In this gripping episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World, Catherine sits down with culture and worldview expert Scott Allen to reveal just how much is at stake when culture redefines the language that holds our families, communities, and even nations together. Scott Allen is not only the president of the Disciple Nations Alliance, but also the best-selling author of Why Social Justice Is Not Biblical Justice, and the driving force behind the transformative new book 10 Words to Heal Our Broken World. With decades of global ministry experience, from Africa to Latin America and Asia, Scott has seen first-hand the link between the words we believe and the lives we lead. This episode launches a powerful three-part series, exploring: “Load Bearing Words”: How pivotal Biblical concepts form the pillars of Western civilization—and what happens when those pillars are removed. Discipling People out of Poverty: A mind-blowing real-life story from Guatemala, where the introduction of a single biblical word, “dominion,” helped an entire village break free from generational poverty. Why the West Became Prosperous: Western nations didn’t prosper because God “loved certain nations more,” but because biblical concepts reshaped culture, education, and opportunity for all. The Crisis of Redefinition: The spiritual battle being waged over words, from “justice” to “freedom”—and how Christians can spot and resist counterfeits being pushed in popular culture, education, and even inside churches. The Importance of Words: How recovering the scriptural meaning behind our civilization’s foundational words is essential for both resisting cultural collapse and equipping the next generation of truth bearers. Catherine and Scott invite parents to see themselves as stewards of these transformative, spiritual building blocks. As Scott warns, “If we lose the true meaning behind these words, we are going to lose all of the goodness they have produced.” But there is hope—by reclaiming these words in our homes and conversations, parents can still lay the foundations for flourishing families and cultures. Are you ready to become a “truth bearer” for the next generation? Tune in to discover how reclaiming the true, biblical meaning of our most essential words can heal broken lives—and even heal a broken world. Call to Action:Parents, which “load bearing” word or biblical concept will you reinforce in your home this week? Share your story, start big conversations—and join us for the next episode as this essential conversation continues. Guest Bio: Scott David Allen is an author and teacher on Christianity, culture, worldview, family, biblical justice, and poverty. He has authored and co-authored numerous books, including his bestselling Why Social Justice Is Not Biblical Justice: An Urgent Appeal to Fellow Christians in a Time of Social Crisis. He serves as president of the international discipleship ministry Disciple Nations Alliance. Previously, he spent 19 years with the Christian poverty alleviation organization Food for the Hungry. His work has taken him across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, equipping Christian leaders to embrace and live out a biblical worldview in faithfulness to Christ’s command to make disciples of all nations. Does chocolate actually cause your migraine—or is your craving just the first warning sign of an attack?
Send us a textWhat happens when you have all the external markers of success but feel profoundly unhappy? Heather Stewart faced this reality as a senior director of finance with the degree, the job, and the lifestyle that society deemed successful—yet something was missing. In a courageous act of self-reclamation, she quit her corporate position, ended her marriage, sold her house, and embarked on a three-month journey to India that would forever alter her perspective on life. Her time in India revealed a stark contrast between Western materialism and community-centered values, leading to a profound realization: "I am a complete person." This awareness freed her from the constant seeking that characterizes much of modern existence. Upon returning to Canada, Heather transformed her career path, opening a yoga studio and becoming a massage therapist to help others reconnect with their physical wellness after experiencing the cerebral nature of corporate life. The universe wasn't finished with Heather's transformation, however. A stroke in 2021 became what she calls "the gift of a three-day silent retreat" in the ER, forcing her to confront a powerful truth—while she was moving in the right direction, she was "playing too small." This health crisis birthed her Thriving Life Method, a holistic approach that harmonizes physical, emotional, spiritual, occupational, and financial wellbeing.Throughout our conversation, Heather challenges popular notions about manifestation, emphasizing that visualization alone isn't enough—we must take ownership and action. "If you want to decide that you need a different life," she explains, "I had to stand up for myself, use my voice, and make something different happen." This perspective offers a refreshing alternative to passive manifestation practices that often leave people frustrated when results don't materialize.Whether you're feeling stuck in a career that no longer serves you, struggling to process emotions authentically, or seeking to create meaningful change in your life, Heather's journey demonstrates the transformative power of taking ownership. By reclaiming responsibility for our choices and circumstances, we unlock our capacity to manifest the reality we truly desire.ContSupport the show

The More Sibyl Podcast Presents: 학교와 집 사이| On Belonging and Advocacy: For Ourselves and Our Children — The One with Dr. Otito Iwuchukwu | Episode 24 (2025)Welcome to July! We're kicking off the month with a deeply resonant episode featuring my dear friend, Dr. Otito Iwuchukwu. She's no stranger to this space; it's not her first rodeo! But this time, we welcome her back in a role that's even more intimate and relatable: as a mother and, as you'll hear, a fierce advocate. As immigrant parents prepare for another school year, it's about more than just backpacks and supply lists. It's about the emotional load we carry, navigating unfamiliar systems, decoding school emails that make our hearts race, and resisting the urge to turn our frustration inward on our children. In this timely and personal conversation, Otito shares how her son's early struggles in school became a mirror, reflecting a lifelong journey of being misunderstood. We unpack the silent burdens immigrant parents bear while navigating Western education, especially in the U.S., with stories that will resonate deeply. One of the most significant aspects of our conversation centers on neurodiversity. As a mom to two neurodivergent sons, Otito reframes ADHD not as a deficit, but as a different kind of brilliance, changing not just how she supports her children, but how she affirms herself. We also explore the cultural dissonance between Nigerian and American schooling. For many of us who grew up trusting that teachers had our best interests at heart, it's jarring to now feel the need to constantly explain, advocate for, and defend our position. As another school year begins, many immigrant families will return to systems not built with their context in mind. This episode offers solidarity. Whether you're a parent, educator, or ally, now is the time to rethink what advocacy, success, and belonging really mean.Listen. Save. Share. Come back to it when August rolls around and you need a reminder: you are not alone in this journey. And if you know a parent trying to raise a child who feels seen, safe, and strong, send this their way. Also, go read The Belonging Paradox, Dr. Otito's incredible book (available on Amazon). The episode only scratches the surface—its pages offer deeper truths about identity, parenting, and reclaiming belonging across cultures and systems. No spoilers here. Just go read it.Oh—and something BIG is coming this month. Mark your calendars for July 19th: More Than a Backpack is a live panel session featuring moms, dads, and a behavioral specialist, digging even deeper into how we can collectively advocate for our kids in the North American education system. That's right—both the U.S. and Canada. Save the date, and we'll see you there!

From ancient dynasties to bustling megacities, China is a land steeped in history, legend, and superstition. Behind the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and neon-lit skylines lies a shadowy world of ghost stories and haunted places that have terrified generations. In this episode, we'll uncover eerie tales of restless spirits, cursed buildings, and paranormal hotspots that make China one of the most fascinating—and haunted—countries on Earth. We begin with the Forbidden City in Beijing, perhaps the most famous haunted location in China. Built in the 1400s, it was the seat of emperors for nearly 500 years. Countless executions, murders, and palace intrigues have left behind a legacy of hauntings. Guards and visitors report seeing ghostly women in white, strange apparitions at night, and hearing unexplained screams echoing through the massive courtyards and darkened halls. Next, we travel to Chaonei No. 81, known as “Beijing's Most Haunted House.” This crumbling French Baroque-style mansion dates back to the early 20th century and is the stuff of urban legend. Rumors swirl about a woman who hanged herself after being abandoned by her lover. Locals claim to hear weeping inside, see her shadow moving behind boarded windows, and even feel violently ill when approaching the building at night. We'll also discuss the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. Though famous for its beautiful classical design, it's also home to centuries of bloodshed from rebellions and wars. Locals speak of encountering spirits in traditional garb, shadowy figures slipping between rockeries and bridges, and disembodied whispers after dark. Our episode wouldn't be complete without exploring China's rich ghost lore. We'll talk about the Hungry Ghost Festival—a time when spirits are believed to roam the Earth seeking offerings and revenge. Families burn paper money and leave food for the dead, hoping to appease them and prevent misfortune. We'll also examine some chilling modern hauntings, including ghostly subway stations in Beijing where passengers report spectral encounters, phantom trains, and even deadly urban legends about portals to the afterlife hidden in plain sight. Throughout this episode, we'll discuss why China's deep respect for ancestors, Buddhist and Taoist beliefs, and folklore about vengeful spirits shape the way these hauntings are understood. You'll learn how Chinese ghost stories differ from Western ones, yet tap into the same primal fears about betrayal, loss, and the unknown. So turn down the lights, grab your tea (or your favorite ghost-hunting gear), and join us as we explore the darker side of China—a land where history and the paranormal go hand in hand. Ohana is the Hawaiian phrase for our word for “family,” but our English equivalent doesn't do it justice. While it includes those within the immediate nuclear family, it goes way beyond the traditional sense of family in our Western culture. Beyond blood or genetics, this kind of family includes friends, neighbors, even those who just share a common passion or core values. In Luke 8:19-21, Jesus radically reframes the family. It looks more Ohaha than Israel. How would this change land for Jesus' own family, and for those Israelites standing in his midst? How will it land for you?
