The Power of Mentorship with Chris Doble, VMSA Program Director

In this episode, host Munir Haque welcomes Chris Doble, Director of the Venture Mentoring Service of Alberta (VMSA), to the show to talk about the mentorship that VMSA offers to entrepreneurs by assembling teams of experienced business leaders. Based on MIT's Venture Mentoring Service model, the VMSA focuses on personal leadership development rather than business operations, emphasizing mentorship through coaching rather than direct advisory. Chris Doble and Munir explore how the program was adapted for Alberta's business environment and how the approach prioritizes developing entrepreneurs as leaders.Chris highlights VMSA's rigorous mentee selection process that ensures those chosen align with their coaching philosophy. He explains that the primarily entrepreneurial and executive mentors foster open discussions that might not be possible in a formal board setting. The conversation discusses how the program, funded by Alberta Innovates, has largely grown through referrals and has helped mentees achieve business growth, leadership clarity, and in some cases, career redirection. Munir and Chris also emphasize the importance of diversity in mentorship teams and the balance between experience and personality compatibility. About Chris Doble: Chris is the program director of the VMSA, Venture Mentoring Service of Alberta, an entrepreneur mentorship program that focuses on building the leadership capacity of growth stage entrepreneurs. Based on the VMS mentorship model established at MIT, the VMSA supports entrepreneurs by surrounding them with a team of experienced business leaders who provide ongoing coaching and guidance as they scale their ventures. Prior to joining the VMSA, Chris helped out to grow the Threshold Impact Venture Mentoring Service program based out of the University of Alberta and has received mentorship and coaching training through the MIT Venture Mentoring Service Executive Immersion Program, and Roy Group's practice of coaching. Before entering the world of mentorship, Chris worked in a variety of roles within the music industry, including as a studio manager of an audio post-production studio, in artist marketing and PR, and in co-launching a mastering studio in Toronto. He has an Honors Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ottawa in Communications and Business Administration and is proud to be a Calgary born and raised citizen.—Contact Munir Haque | ActionEdge Executive Development: Website: AEEDNow.comLinkedin: Action Edge Executive Development Inc.Contact Chris Doble: Website: VMSAlberta.orgLinkedInPodcast Production:Recording:  PushySix StudiosProduction Assistance: Astronomic Audio—TranscriptChris Doble: [00:00:01] There's an analogy that we really like to use to describe VMs, which is that we don't build the race car, we train the race car driver. With the thinking that, of course we want to see success come to these start ups and come to these businesses, but for us, we really want that to flow through the growth and development of the individual. Longer term thinking being even if these ventures aren't ultimately successful, you've still built the skills and the capacity that someone could take with them to the next venture.Munir Haque: [00:00:29] Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Boardroom 180 Podcast. I'm your host Munir Haque, an executive coach and senior board strategist. I have partnered with Action Edge Executive Development to lead their governance and political acumen division. In each episode, we meet with governance leaders and step into their boardrooms, where decisions shape the world around us.Munir Haque: [00:00:48] Today we're excited to welcome Mr. Chris Doble. Chris is the program director of the Venture Mentoring Service of Alberta, the VMSA. It's an entrepreneur mentorship program that focuses on building the leadership capacity of growth stage entrepreneurs. Based on the VMS mentorship model established at MIT, the VMSA supports entrepreneurs by surrounding them with a team of experienced business leaders who provide ongoing coaching and guidance as they scale their ventures. Before entering the world of mentorship, Chris worked in a variety of roles within the music industry as a studio manager of an audio post-production studio, to artist marketing and PR, to co-launching a mastering studio in Toronto. He has an Honors Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ottawa in Communications and Business Administration and is proud to be a Calgary born and raised citizen. Welcome to the show, Chris.Chris Doble: [00:02:04] Thanks for having me, Munir.Munir Haque: [00:02:06] I first came across you back in 2023 during Innovation Week here in Calgary. You were presenting at a session on governance. There were two other gentlemen who were presenting with you, one was talking specifically about the board of directors, another was talking about the board of advisors. You were talking about a board of consciousness, and that struck a spark in my head, because I hadn't heard of that too much before. I always kept in the back of my head that I was going to reach out to you and have you on here so we can talk a little bit about that. When I've done some of the research on board of consciousness, I think there's a variety of different roles that they fill, and I think there's maybe some different characteristics and maybe different interpretations of what they are. But I thought I'd get you on here to talk about, how do you interpret what a board of consciousness is?Chris Doble: [00:03:02] I'm glad you came to that session, and I am glad that you reached out. Because it's led to some really good conversations, and I appreciate the opportunity to come chat about this. I always smile when we use that term 'board of consciousness'. The word that we typically use when we describe what it is we do is mentorship, but I think board of consciousness is a prettier way of describing that. But this idea of, you're here to support an individual, where you have a board of directors or a board of advisors that may end up being more focused on helping your business or helping growth or strategy of the business, the organization, board of consciousness or mentors can really be focused on the individual. How do you help them grow and develop and succeed? More in whatever way that needs to look like for them. That's the focus of our mentorship program for entrepreneurs is, how do you take a group of highly experienced business leaders, entrepreneurs, business builders and put them around an up and coming entrepreneur and get focused on how you can make them a more effective leader. I'm sure today we can dive into what that looks like.Munir Haque: [00:04:10] We'll get into a little bit more depth, but why don't we take it back a step. You have some sort of relationship with Platform Calgary. Perhaps for some of our listeners who aren't in Calgary, who aren't familiar with Platform, why don't you give a little bit of background on that and then your relationship with them?

In this episode, get to know Dr. Stephanie Canestraro's incredible story of overcoming chronic health issues and how she fell in love with the vagus nerve, started her practice, and now runs a very successful functional medicine chiropractic clinic in Toronto, Ontario. We also chat about her recent experience with Lyme carditis and how she utilized several alternative approaches such as neural therapy. Dr Stephanie Canestraro graduated with Honors from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Prior to that, she received an Honors Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario. She has completed the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Course at McMaster University, as well as Biomedical Dry Needling. When Dr. Stephanie's health began to decline early in her chiropractic career, and the allopathic medical system had nothing to offer, she began her journey towards Functional Medicine. Her interest in the human body, combined with her failing health, created a passion for finding the answers to her own health issues, and eventually everyone around her. She has been certified through Functional Medicine University and recently became a member of the prestigious IFMCP (Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner) group. She continues her own research into Functional Medicine and is dedicated to finding answers to her patients' issues. Dr. Stephanie follows an integrative approach when treating her patients, utilizing a number of techniques, such as Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, joint manipulation, ART®, custom orthotics, Fascial Abrasion, Graston techniques, and performance optimization taping techniques. Active with continuing education courses, Dr. Stephanie continually integrates new techniques into her practice with the aim of improving function and reducing pain in her patients. Dr. Stephanie works mostly with elite athletes using her training as a Chiropractor and soft tissue specialist. She also uses comprehensive functional medicine testing, combined with therapeutic doses of supplements and specific diets, in addition to lifestyle changes (sleep hygiene, meditation, coping techniques, imagery, biofeedback, nature therapy, etc.) for performance optimization or to treat specific health issues of players. She is currently a consulting practitioner for players on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, ACE Tennis, Toronto Tennis City, and individual Hollywood actors and actresses alike. Her passion lies in concussions, degenerative neurological diseases, and gastrointestinal issues. Dr. Stephanie started educating fellow practitioners early in her career as an assistant instructor for Biomedical Dry Needling, FAT tool, and performance taping. She propels her career forward and thrives in the face of challenging cases, while always having an experienced mentor by her side to bounce ideas off of. All her referrals have been through word of mouth. Currently, Stephanie is at a pivot point in her career training new grads to work with to take on some of the patient load but is always exploring new ways to help people. @dr.scanestraro @vagusclinic https://vagusclinic.com/ ----------------------------------------------------- @amandapanacea @the_healer_revolution https://thehealerrevolution.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/amanda-panacea/support

It also supports being supportive and having open communications. Those who practice gentle parenting encourage working together as a family to teach their children to express their feelings, but in a socially acceptable, age-appropriate manner. It is alarming how easy body-shaming becomes a topic for teasing and bullying to little kids. With peer pressure, its effects can be more damaging to the mind of someone innocent. But how can we adults protect them from this if we struggle with it? In this episode of The Fit Mess, Emily Lauren Dick talks about her book Body Positive: A Guide to Loving Your Body and what it tells us about body positivity and the steps we can take to make it practical in our daily lives. The episode also tackles the role of media in the issue, how it affects both women and men, and how your body perception can affect your parenting. Find out how a healthy body outlook is defined in this episode of The Fit Mess with Emily Lauren Dick! One Move Toward Body Positivity  For Emily, there are countless ways where one can move toward body positivity. Focusing on non-physical achievements, dressing comfortably, and talking to a therapist are just a few of the many steps people can take to nourish a healthier outlook of their bodies. But aside from the ones she mentions in her book, Body Positive: A Guide to Loving Your Body, Emily decides to take this movement forward through one particular step. She wants advertisers to take accountability for the images they show. By partnering with the organization Live Life Unfiltered, they plan to soon launch a campaign called ‘Show Me Unfiltered.' This campaign will take after the law in France, effective in 2017, that required commercials to use disclaimers for any sort of image that is digitally altered. Being the leading source of oversexualized and unrealistic models of what a person's body should look like, especially a woman's body, this big move is a demand of transparency for mainstream media. The law being successful in France is proof of how it can possibly be done anywhere. Listen to Emily Lauren Dick as she talks about how health isn't only physical in this episode of The Fit Mess! About Emily Lauren Dick: Emily Lauren Dick is a body image expert and activist who is committed to making girls feel comfortable in their own skin. As Ontario, Canada heads toward a third round of lockdowns, we're experiencing what Victoria Sabo and her colleagues call "Covid Fatigue". That low motivation, low-grade anxiety, indescribable feeling and set of emotions that characterize our response to over a year of this pandemic. Victoria and I met to talk about the issues that people are experiencing: whether they be children, essential or frontline workers, immunologically impaired, or those who have lost businesses. Victoria is a registered psychotherapist who works in Toronto at Psychotherapy in the City. Victoria Sabo is a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and a Certified Canadian Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). She holds a Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology from Western University, with an Honors Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Behaviour from McMaster University. Victoria works with youth and adults experiencing a wide variety of concerns including stress, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relationships, school, identity exploration, life transitions, rehabilitation, and trauma. As a therapist, she works to provide a safe, open, and non-judgemental space for clients to explore and process their experiences. Understanding that each client's story is unique, she applies an integrative and flexible approach specifically tailored for each unique journey. Generating solutions, creating meaning, and fostering growth, are all possible using resources within the self. Through self-exploration, making connections, enhancing knowledge, and building skills, Victoria empowers her clients to access and further develop their inner strengths as tools for wellness. Victoria follows an anti-oppressive framework, operating within feminist, LGBTTIQQ2SA+, and culturally-informed perspectives that accept, celebrate, and are sensitive to, all sexualities, genders, family structures, ethnicities, and religions. Over the years, she has provided support to children and youth living with disabilities while working to increase service accessibility and has provided gender-informed programming for vulnerable young girls. As a previous researcher supported by Ontario's Poverty Reduction Strategy, Victoria advocated for services to assist in the healing and upward mobility of families economically and socially marginalized by society. Passionate for youth justice, she has published articles and spoken at conferences giving voice to the experiences and struggles of justice-involved youth in order to inform rehabilitative efforts. Victoria and I talk about the difficulties her clients and my patients are experiencing during these Lockdowns and the pandemic in general. What some of the symptoms of Covid Fatigue are, some of the social justice issues surrounding the pandemic, some of the unique isolating situations some of our patients/clients find themselves in and what can be done about it. A lot of the people I work with are suffering and it's time to speak about it: to validate it, bring attention to it and take some lift off the cognitive load of the struggles that we've been dealing with. Go easy on yourselves, this is a challenging time. Stay safe out there, my friends. In order to effectively use one expert, there has to be a trust level there. There has to be trust that that expert isn't in cahoots with one side…. That's sometimes a hard place to get to.”“The numbers do sort of speak to me…something I call investigative intuition…. I can go through statements and pick out certain transactions and go back to the client and say, ‘These transactions I'd like you to look at and can you tell me anything you might know about them?'....I can't tell you how many times a client comes back comes back and says, I didn't know about those transactions, but there's a couple here that are really stinky.”“People are as dumb about the money as they've always been…. All the electronic banking has made it in some ways a little bit easier to steal, because a few clicks of a button and you could transfer money out of the company's bank account to you personally. The thing is: there's going to be more documentation of that than there ever was before, if someone takes the time to dig in.”“Segregation of duties is literally just taking the money handling process and dividing it up between multiple people so that they are sort of naturally double checking each other. ‘Well, how can I possibly do it in my small company?' Very simply: have the bank statement sent to your home, Mr. Owner… and you should let your employees know, very subtly, that you're opening and looking at it. Because it's a great deterrent.” CONNECT WITH TRACY COENENTracy Coenen, CPA, CFF of Sequence Inc. Forensic Accounting has spent more than 20 years investigating fraud. Julie and Casey sit down with Rev. Dr. Courtney Pace to talk about social justice, racism and sexism within religious traditions, how to have difficult conversations, the powerful story of civil rights activist Prathia Hall, and how both faith traditions and workplaces can decentralize power and uplift everyone.  And also figure skating. TOP TAKEAWAYS: To understand people who are different from us, we have to understand intersectionality, and how everyone carries multiple identities that often complicate their experience of discrimination. Sometimes, an environment doesn’t have to TELL you to be quiet if it teaches you effectively to quiet yourself.  And sometimes you don’t realize how weird that is until you get out - the fish doesn’t understand what water is, because it’s just their world. Courtney’s philosophy: the central deity in faith is working toward liberation and dismantling hierarchy where everyone treats everyone else with love - but because people think in terms of dominance and power, we project our own stuff onto God and create toxic systems. The worst thing that can happen if you ask a question (even of something as big as GOD) is that you don’t get an answer . . . but often you find information that helps you understand and participate in the world in a richer way. Difficult conversations require practice.  Telling people the truth is important (and sometimes the kindest thing you can do for the community and the individual), and how we do it and the intention with which we do it with is incredibly important. Prathia Hall (the subject of Courtney’s book) was central to the story of the Selma march, a leading voice in the civil rights movement, and one of the most formidable minds of her generation. When people can be their real selves, they are happier, more productive, and more creative.  When everyone has what they need, it leads to community thriving. A baseline for us to learn and grow from in future interviews. Some highlights from the episode:What is Holistic Nutrition: How does it vary from traditional nutritional approaches? Why Whole Foods in your Diet are a Must: The importance of whole foods and why concentrated vitamins and supplements may not work as well, or at all the way whole foods work. Why Industrial Seed Oils are so dangerous: We talk about the triple threat to your health that these oils pose. Today's episode of Between The Posts we hold a special conversation with guest John DeBenedictus of The Last 9 Seconds. John DeBenedictis has traveled throughout North America presenting his unique lecture on scoring goals. He was one of the keynote speakers at the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Coaching Convention in Indianapolis in 2013 speaking to a standing room only crowd of over 500 coaches. He was also a guest speaker at the NSCAA conventions in 2004 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and 2005 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. In 2007, DeBenedictis was invited to speak in Santa Clara, California for the California Youth Soccer Association’s annual coaching conference and convention. John holds the unique distinction of having spoken to the largest soccer coaching audience by any Canadian born coach. Over 1,000 coaches attended his sessions at the conference in Baltimore. John is in his 40th year of coaching and has coached at all levels including internationally. He also ran his own soccer camps with Tony Waiters, former English International goalkeeper and Canadian National Team coach. He played goalkeeper for York University helping them win the National Title in 1977. He signed a semi-professional contract in a professional league called the "National Soccer League" with Toronto Ukrania. DeBenedictis completed his Honors Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Physical and Health Education as well as earning an advanced certificate of coaching from York University. He holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a CSA Pre B Provincial License. He has extended his studies by doing extensive research into the cognitive processes used for performing tasks as it relates to perceptual motor-muscular learning. He has focused his research to include studying visual motion perception as it relates to different situations that soccer players encounter. DeBenedictis also studied super-star athletes from a variety of sports to see what they did differently in their human perception motor-muscular development process. His findings are unique and different when combined with the goalkeeper’s point of view on stopping goals. All this information formed the basis for his unique course, which led him to seek out different soccer facts that have helped players understand what it takes to be a great striker. He was able to take his experience as a goalkeeper as well as his coaching experience in dealing with adolescent athletes and blend it in with sports psychology to develop a program that will connect with the athlete in delivering the powerful information derived from his research and findings. DeBenedictis was also the first coach to bring the Wiel Coerver Dribbling and Ball Possession techniques to Canada demonstrating the techniques across Ontario to coaches and players. DeBenedictis also produced a video on Ball Possession and Dribbling techniques geared to North American kids which are being re-issued and re-edited and some segments are out on YouTube. Many of the players he has coached or instructed went on to play professional soccer in Canada, the USA, and Europe. He has also written numerous coaching articles for soccer publications and sport psychology websites across North America. Some of his articles have been instrumental in introducing change in player development programs with soccer clubs across North America. DeBenedictis is the author of the book, "The Last 9 Seconds" which just came out in 2013 and the primary point of discussion during today's episode! She now specializes in eating disorders, intuitive eating, community nutrition and seniors' health. She holds an Honors Bachelor in Nutrition Sciences from the University of Ottawa, and she has educated herself on topics such as body-acceptance, Health at Every Size and feminism, all topics that guide her work as a non-diet, weight-inclusive, body positive and dietitian whose dreams are similar to mine: We both want to see a world free from mental health stigma, body shaming, dieting and disordered eating, where people of all sizes deserve nourishment, wellbeing and happiness. You’ll hear Josée talk about: – How she felt in her body as a little girl – Why she didn’t develop bad body image until later in life – How lucky she was to have her parents be her biggest cheerleaders – Why she felt different than other kids when she was a teenager – How studying nutrition can easily trigger disordered eating for people who feel insecure – Why she became convinced that changing her body was the way to acceptance and happiness – How exercise turned into a problem for her – Why it is so dangerous to marry the concepts of weight and exercise – Why nothing she did ever felt "good enough" – Why, for a very long time, she didn’t actually realize how disordered she had become with eating and exercise – How she never told anyone that she was struggling, so no one was suspicious – Why it is especially dangerous for nutrition students to have their struggles go undetected for way too long – What her deepest fears were when she considered opening up about her struggles – What her own denial looked like – What it was that made her realize that what she went through was a serious thing – Where she first came across body positivity and the non-diet-approach – What’s wrong with official guidelines regarding diabetes and weight – Why she thinks no one who adopted the Health at Every Size (HAES) model ever turned back – Why it is so important to recognize that neither fame, money, looks or any other source of potential outside approval will ever be enough to fill a void that exists in our soul (no matter what advertisement, movies or media might make us believe!) – Why it is so easy to fall into the trap of comparing our insides to other people’s "performance of happy" – What the steps to true healing can look like (and what the key ingredients are) – Why she decided to truly take a break from exercise, and why this could be key for all of us who struggle with divorcing the concepts of weight and exercise – Why accepting size-diversity is the key to healing our relationship to food and weight – How she introduces the concept of Health At Every Size to women who haven’t heard of it before – Why facing our fears is key (even if remaining in a disordered place might feel "easier") – How to become aware of the different ways our inner Gremlin pushes us into behaviors that don’t serve us and our recovery – Why opening up about our struggles contributes to healing on a much larger scale... ...
