We had the pleasure of interviewing onelinedrawing over Zoom video!Jonah Matranga has been making music for over 30 years.A prolific artist, he has become an enduring institution in the scene with a devoted fan base, rich lineage, and varied music career. Jonah has often straddled the line between the underground and mainstream. He's worked with indie labels like Jade Tree and majors such as Atlantic, having fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE.His music has influenced bands from Deftones to Blink-182, and he was there for emo and post-hardcore giants in their earliest beginnings — taking bands such as Thursday and Dashboard Confessional on tour. Simply put, the scene cannot be separated from Jonah's art.Jonah has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy to them all: raw honesty and an ability to make every show unique and personal. This is most apparent in Jonah's solo and collaborative project ONELINEDRAWING. Jonah's solo performance has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where they often perform with only a guitar and R2D2 sidekick.Sketchbook is the latest release from ONELINEDRAWING, featuring a collection of songs from Jonah's early solo years, 1999-2001, completely remastered for vinyl. The album features originals and renditions of the likes of 7 Seconds and Jawbox, as well as the Sense Field split honoring the late Jon Bunch(Sense Field/Further Seems Forever). The LP also includes liner notes and zine by Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason/New End Original).Sketchbook exists as both a time capsule and thank you letter to fans and music itself — a combination of the period in which Jonah first embarked on his solo journey and a celebration of the vitality that music and community not only affords him but all of us.We want to hear from you! Scream is one of these iconic bands that we all heard about when we were young, apart from our walking encyclopedia Knut, who probably witnessed many of the DC Hardcore bands back in his 20s and 30s, but for the regular people among us the early DC years and the bands that came from that area and which were on Dischord or later on Jade Tree are legendary. Minor Threat, State of Alert, Scream - the latter even released the first full-length ever on Dischord. Now they're back! With a new full-length! With collaborations galore and with great songs! And … with enough time on Pete Stahl's hands to sit down and talk with us about many, many things! Enjoy another interview with a “living legend”! The latter is a term that Pete doesn't like and he explains why in this interview, but we also talk about the variability of songs, moods and genres on DC Special. He also explains why the record is neither only a reflection of our times nor only a trip down nostalgia lane. He explains his love for Dead Kennedys and even why he - a DC guy - now likes the Dodgers and which kind of music he likes to listen to when going on a hike. Enjoy these more than 50 minutes with a man who has played with the Sunn O))) guys, with most of the Desert Sessions folks and even with someone Pete more or less discovered, a guy called Dave Grohl - might have heard about him, guy might make it big one day.

The LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies - is a not for profit centre at the Columbia University School of the Arts, which provides an atmosphere of print education for students and invited guests. Tōkyō v Kyōto (Ōsaka) school of mokuhanga - Tōkyō and Kyōto have, historically, been culturally different throughout Japanese history. Even today, especially with foreign expats, which side of the border you pledge allegiance to can make or break a pleasant conversation. Regarding woodblock printing, it was the moving of the capital to Edo from Kyōto by Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616), officially in 1603, which centred the world for an entire nation. Edo became the business, and cultural district in which most people found themselves. The sankin kōtai system, where daimyō from the entire country, were obligated to spend alternating years in the capital, allowed the merchant classes to grow prosperous, spending their time and money on entertainments such as ukiyo-e, kabuki, and sumo. This didn't mean that Kyōto and Ōsaka didn't have ukiyo-e, it simply meant that it was overshadowed by Edo. This is because many publishers and artists lived and worked in Edo's environs. Kabuki from Edo and kabuki from Kyōto thrived, therefore there were many prints published for the plays performed in both cities. Stylistically the prints are different, with Ōsaka ukiyo-e being called Kamigata-e, the region where Ōsaka, and Kyōto are situated. For instance, the work of Ōsaka artist, and painter Shunkōsai Hokushū (active 1802-1832) is famous in Ōsaka for his kabuki prints, but is relatively unknown today, as compared to Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) who lived and worked around the same time in Edo. Comparing the two is perhaps comparing Brad Pitt (b. 1963), with Steve Buscemi (b. 1957), but I feel that it shows what both artists, successful in their fields, can accomplish for the genre. More information on Ōsaka ukiyo-e, can be found, here. Keiko Kadota (1942-2017) - was the director of Nagasawa Art Park at Awaji City from 1997-2011, and then of MI Lab at Lake Kawaguchi from 2011 until her passing. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jonah Matranga over Zoom video.Jonah Matranga is no stranger to the scene. He has been making music for over 30 years and has become somewhat of an institution. A prolific artist who is full of ideas and he straddles the line between the underground and the mainstream cusp, Matranga has fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE, and has worked with indie labels like Jade Tree to majors such as Atlantic. His music has been noted as influencing many notable bands ranging from Deftones to Blink-182.Simply put, there is no one quite like Jonah Matranga.Throughout his long career, he has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished like he has, after playing almost 4,000 shows. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy with him — a devoted fanbase, raw honesty, and an interest in making every show unique and personal. This has always been the most apparent in Matranga's solo and collaborative project performing as onelinedrawing. Jonah's performance as onelinedrawing has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where he often performed with only his guitar and his R2D2 sidekick. Tenderwild marks the return of onelinedrawing, which is the first time since 2004's The Volunteers (Jade Tree) that Jonah has used the moniker. This album brought together so many friends and fellow musicians that it only felt right to release it as onelinedrawing. Tenderwild is an uplifting journey that was written and inspired during a chaotic time of healing for Matranga. Contrasting between guitar driven rock songs and heartfelt intense ballads, Tenderwild is a collection of some of the best songs Jonah has ever written. The album features guest appearances from many of Matranga's close friends, such as: Zach Lind (Jimmy Eat World), Jeremy Tappero (Soul Asylum), Norman Brannon (Texas Is The Reason), Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional), John Gutenberger (Far), and Jake Snider (Minus The Bear). Tenderwild is an expansive and special album that has something for everyone. We want to hear from you! Today we welcome Cam DiNunzio from Lazycain and Denali. Today, he makes his wares as a composer and music supervisor. We spoke about his early days in Virginia Beach, moving to Richmond, and his thoughts on music as he navigated and survived the emo label. Cam's contribution to music, this genre, and further throughout the musical landscape is a reason for you to stick around if you haven't heard of the bands or his name. If you have, you're in for a treat. We dive into the Lazycain and Denali days. At the start as context, I mention Cam's bandmate John, who we worked together when I first moved to NYC back in 2000. With that said, as comforting as when a 718 area code calls a 917, listening back this felt more like a conversation, not an interview. I hope you enjoy.
Podcast Back! Welcome to 2022—without a doubt, it'll certainly be another awful year, but at least the Anhedonic Headphones Podcast has returned with a slow rollout for its sixth season. In the first episode this time around, or the 31st episode overall, Kevin welcomes illustrious guest Daniel Radin—who performs both with a band called the Future Teens, as well as his own "solo" project, Lake Saint Daniel. The two virtually chop it up about Dunkin Donuts, James Corden, when there is just "too much music" on an album, the earnestness of Bruce Hornsby, and more. Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the only/greatest newsletter about music in the world. Welp, SELLOUT has been out for a week and the response has been so overwhelming. Every morning I wake up to dozens and dozens and dozens of nice messages from you all. Apologies if I haven’t gotten to all of them but I really appreciate the support! I’ve done approximately 9,000 interviews about the book recently if you want to read/listen to any of em. There have been a few new ones I’m probly forgetting. I was interviewed by Mark Hoppus, which kinda blows my mind. He asked me to settle the debate: The Blue Album vs. Pinkerton. Naturally, I panicked and asked him to settle MY debate: Dookie vs. The Blue Album. He chose wisely. (Dookie.)Aaaaaanyway. I mentioned the other day that I was starting an interview series called Sellout Stories, where I expand the major-label tales of people in the book. (My first guest was Chris from Anti-Flag.) Since Texas Is the Reason’s Norman Brannon makes an appearance in the chapter on Jimmy Eat World, talking about how great Clarity is, I figured he should be the second guest and woooo boy what a story his band had! This conversation ended up being so much deeper than I’d expected. We talked a lot about putting mental health first, the added difficulty of being a closeted gay man in the face of rock stardom, and lots of other heavy topics. Also, haircuts. This was a really special chat and I hope you like it. You can listen above or on Spotify, Apple, etc. If you want the short text version, below is the section about Norman that appears in my new photo zine, MAJOR LABEL DEBUT, which you can pick up in my online store.Oh, and if you’re in the NY area, come to Vitus this Saturday! I’ll be in conversation with Geoff Rickly. Non-ticketed. Just show up. I’ll have books for sale. Happy to sign em. Also, the first 20 people who buy a book there will get a FREE photo zine. The first 10 people to buy multiple copies will get a FREE tote bag.SELLOUT is a book about bands releasing their major label debut albums, so technically Texas Is the Reason was ineligible for inclusion. But as far as major-label signings go, the New York band might take the award for all-time closest near miss. The band had people interested in them from their very first show in 1994, says guitarist Norman Brannon. They played six songs in his Manhattan living room for their group of friends, who happened to be members of bands like Youth of Today and Sick of It All, as well as people who ran or worked for record labels. So, there were eyes on them from day one, and they had the chance to go major very early.“At that time in New York City, there were only two streams,” says Brannon. “You were either going to be an indie band or you were going to be a major band. Quicksand, Into Another, Orange 9mm, Sick of It All, CIV, they were all on major labels. So it wasn’t foreign to us because those people were all our friends and they didn’t seem to be having a difficult or miserable time on a major label. I wasn’t super anti-major, but it didn’t feel right.” Wanting more time to figure out what their band was about, Texas Is the Reason shooed away major label A&Rs by locking in a deal with indie Revelation Records for two full-lengths and an EP. “‘That way, all the major labels will leave us alone.’ That’s what we thought,” he says. “But that did not happen. As soon as we signed, they actually got more aggressive. It got crazy.”Major labels pursued the band even harder after their debut EP sold an impressive 30,000 copies for Revelation. The band’s profile kept growing as more and more A&R reps took them out to lunch, bought them groceries, and gave them free CDs. The members started to fall under the major-label spell and finally conceded: Maybe we really are that good. Further bolstering their confidence were the price tags being thrown around. “The highest offer we received was $3.5 million for three albums,” Brannon says. “$500,000 was a non-recoupable signing bonus. They were literally gonna give us half a million just to sign us.”The band whittled the long list of interested suitors down and ultimately agreed to ink a deal with Capitol for $2.3 million. Their lawyer drafted up the paperwork while the band was on tour with the Promise Ring. As soon as they returned home, it’d be ready for signing and they'd be cut a check that day. But the nearer the signing drew, the more Brannon felt like backing out.“I was having a really difficult time in life. I’ve struggled with clinical depression for as long as I can remember, and had suicidal ideation before puberty. 1996 was a particularly difficult year for my depression. I believe it was neurological and situational. The situational aspects were the pressures of being in the band and feeling the weight of people depending on me and feeling uncomfortable with the amount of responsibility I had. On top of that, I was hitting this place in my life where I was starting to realize that I needed to be an out gay man. This was at a time when Jason from the Promise Ring was coming out and he was attacked mercilessly on the Jade Tree message board, so I knew there was risk. So now I’m about to sign a major record deal and if I do that, will I have to stay in the closet?”When he expressed to the rest of the members that he wanted to break up the band, some shared his sentiment while others thought he was out of his mind. They called it quits in 1997 and it caused a rift between them which took some years to mend. When asked if he regrets his decision all these years later, Brannon says no. “Had I signed that contract, I’m not kidding, I would be dead. 100 percent, I cannot stress that enough. ...So how could I possibly regret it?”Order my book, SELLOUT, here: Bookshop | B&N | Amazon | Books-A-Million | GoodreadsCome to the events in New York and Los Angeles.Shop the merch store.Follow me on the internet. In the season five finale—the 30th episode overall (a landmark?), and the sixth episode this time around, Kevin welcomes illustrious guest Anika Pyle to the virtual building. A member of the beloved but long defunct pop-punk outfit Chumped, and the leader for the equally as poppy and punky group Katie Ellen, Pyle spent 2020 crafting her solo debut, Wild River. The two talk about the album, remaining creative during a fucking pandemic, vegan food, and the gender politics of pop music. Anyway, Tim and Jeff have a new project called Bitter Branches and we are proud to announce that TODAY (8/10/2021) you can now preorder their brand new 2 song 7" single from Equal Vision Records. Episode 33. Darren Walters. Lessons Learned While Changing The Tone of Hardcore and Indie Music . When you talk to someone like Darren Walters, you have the opportunity to learn more than you may never realize. In fact, the kid who would hit a homerun with his first label and first release, Turning Point's 7" on Hi Impact, wouldn't stop there. He'd go on to be a part of Jade Tree Records, which in time would literally change the face, tone and look of Hardcore Punk, Indie and Emo Music. This was recorded in 2 separate sessions due to some technical bugs, but it is best that it runs almost 5 hours and is complete instead of in 2 parts. If you ever wanted to learn about the Music Industry from someone who would later teach Music Industry classes at Drexel University, this is fucking it. From the very beginning of his story, to the very end of Jade Tree, this cover so much. I had such a pleasure with these 2 conversations and there is just so much history and things to glean from. Darren is an inspiration and his work and the legacy of what it did for our scene locally and overall is unbelievable and unparalleled. We welcome back Dan Didier from The Promise Ring to talk about the album “Very Emergency.” Why do you ask? Because today, September 28th, 2019 is the 20th anniversary of this album’s release on Jade Tree Records! To that, I wanted to find a fun way to celebrate and talk about the album. So Dan and I connected earlier this week to discuss many things including the inspiration of the album artwork, the backlash at the time, the one video they did for the album, Kim Colleta’s honest opinion of the album and also her prowess for taping NBA games on VHS, and finally we read some reviews on the album from AV Club, MTV, and Pitchfork. If you haven’t, you should listen to this album now, get a feel for it and take an hour as Dan and I discuss, laugh, and then laugh some more about this album, time, and how many times we had to go to the internet to remember something. This month, I felt a sudden shock of inspiration and this podcast seemed to appear instantly out of thin air! EPISODE #70 of Random Old Records started like many past ones have, with a song that I couldn't get out of my head.In this case, it was the first track off the classic 1997 album by The Promise Ring, Nothing Feels Good. "Is This Thing On?" lit a spark in me that led to a set of incredible late '90s post-hardcore emo-punk-pop from Jets To Brazil, Superchunk, and others. From there, the episode flows into a bunch of recent jams from One Eleven Heavy, Shannon and the Clams, Exploded View, Mountain Movers, Dreamend, and so much more. If you like raw post-punk, rootsy guitars, and/or dreamy drones, there's something for you here, plus you'll get wild excerpts from the 1960 sci-fi classic Amazing Transparent Man!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. In what is now a yearly tradition, EPISODE #61 of Random Old Records is a special 5/10/15/20 edition. For a little over an hour, I jump into the time machine and travel back to 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 to take a look around and sample the top jams of those particular years! This time, I start off in 1997 with the stone-cold classic title track from Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out LP. Then, you'll hear a selection of 97's finest pop-punk and emo from the Get Up Kids and Promise Ring. Zipping right along to 2002, there's ripping punk from the Buff Medways and Idlewild, then a jump into 2007 for some rough and raw garage rock from The Ponys, Willowz, and Blitzen Trapper, before ending up in 2012 with Best Coast and Gentleman Jesse. Has it really been five years already since the last Gentleman Jesse record? That's too long, for sure.Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. Hey, folks! There was no episode of Random Old Records in October, truly sorry for the delay! I needed a little extra time to craft the perfect selection of tracks for this one. Episode #56 is a special 5-10-15-20 edition, which opens up the memory banks and goes back in time to the years 2011, 2006, 2001, and 1996. Looking back, none of these years were particularly "great" for music, but each one definitely has their fair share of jams!In 2011, Thee Oh Sees kicked off a remarkable run of albums with the acid-folk creep of Castlemania. Meanwhile, The Beets delivered their excellent final LP Let The Poison Out before leader Juan Wauters started a solo career. A decade prior, Jersey post-hardcore rockers Rye Coalition unleashed THEIR final LP Curses, which had been in major label limbo for two years prior to release, and further south, Texas punks the Marked Men released their classic Fix My Brain.2001 was the prime year for emo and post-hardcore, at least in my circle of friends at the time. Bands like Hey Mercedes and Hot Water Music were crafting anthems, while the remnants of Cap'n Jazz were crafting avant-fusion rock with Owls. Finally, the hour wraps up with a bunch of Britpop and indie rock from 1996, when both genres were in slight decline but still pumping out plenty of jams. In between the tracks are some vintage news stories to ramp up the nostalgia and complete the time capsule. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I had putting it together. As always, thanks for listening, and stay tuned for episode #57 next month!Random Old Records Podcast #56Released 11/07/16DOWNLOAD HERE1. For this episode we welcome Tanner Jones of You Blew It. You Blew It have been around since 2009 and released albums on Topshelf, Jade Tree and soon, Triple Crown Records will be releasing “Abendrot” on November 11th of this year. I’ve had a chance to listen to the full album it doesn’t sound like anything they’ve done and that’s a good thing. This is a giant leap for not only the band but the independent scene itself. One of my favorite bands from the scene and one you should take a second look at if you haven’t. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
I'm few weeks late this time, but hopefully this selection of jams will be worth the wait! September brings the great news that Memphis weirdo blues rockers the Grifters have reissued their classic 1994 LP, Crappin' You Negative. This hot mess of ugly distortion, bent guitar duels, and loose-limbed grooves might be a bit dated, but it still bleeds passion and grit through the speakers like it did back then. I was lucky enough to see them on a reunion tour last year, and the addition of age, wisdom, and increased precision made them even more powerful. Here's tp the hope that they make more music!Episode #55 of Random Old Records starts off with the Grifters aptly enough, then goes all over the map. You'll hear an absolute jangle-pop earworm from Paperhead bassist Peter Stringer-Hye, a classic Aussie punk jam from Kim Salmon and The Scientists, a brand-new song from Rangers, and a gross, Flipper-lovin' punk plod from Cleveland's Rubber Mate. Finally, in honor of my recent viewing of the Amphetamine Reptile/Tom Hazelmyer documentary The Color Of Noise, you get a ferocious track from Halo Of Flies, and like-minded jams from Laughing Hyenas and Chrome Cranks. As always, thanks for listening! I will be back in a few weeks, closer to a regular schedule I hope, with episode #56. This one will be a special "5-10-15-20" episode where I hop in the time machine to re-visit songs from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago! 2001 and 1996 were some strange and interesting times, for sure!Random Old Records #55Released 09/18/2016DOWNLOAD HERE1.
