It's OK to Not Be OK Episode #434 with Dr. Gina Dorfman How much do you trust your team members? Do you question their abilities, or do you find them capable? Do you delegate, or do you feel better off doing everything yourself? If there is one ingredient for success in anything, it's trust. And Kirk Behrendt brings in Dr. Gina Dorfman, co-founder and CEO of YAPI, to reveal how trusting her team at the highest level led to running multiple successful businesses. For her advice on how to build the ultimate dream team, listen to Episode 434 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Find the right people for your practice. Share your vision with your team. Trust your team of being capable. Designate adequate time for training. Give them the right to make decisions. Quotes: “People always ask me one question, ‘How do you get all of this done?' And the secret is, I don't do anything. I just have people around me who are absolutely amazing.” (4:47—5:00) “I'm nobody without the people around me. And I sincerely mean it.” (5:18—5:24) “First, it starts with vision. If we want our people to come to work and build what we want them to build, our vision needs to trickle down to them. And we're doing a very, very bad job at doing this as a profession, as dentists, because we talk to our patients and — I mean, I get it. Throughout the day, we hear things like, ‘Doc, this tooth didn't hurt until you touched it. And nothing personal, but I don't like the dentist.' And so, what we do is we hide. We hide in our offices.” (10:46—11:27) “We tell the story to ourselves that unless we do it ourselves, no one is going to do it better than us. And even if they could, by the time I teach them how to do it, and by the time we get all the quirks solved, it's better and faster to do it ourselves. That's a bad story.” (13:23—13:50) “You [start to believe the story you tell yourself]. And you believe them so much that you keep telling those stories to yourself. And your team starts to believe those stories because they see that you have no confidence in them.” (14:12—14:24) “You have to delegate, and you have to trust your team to get the job done.” (16:32—16:39) “Dr. Howard Farran says that you have to delegate authority. And in my office, we call it a $200 decision. So, in my office, every team member has the right to make a decision. And if I lose $200 because of that decision, it's going to be just fine. The worst thing that can happen is they come to me asking questions all the time, because then I can never leave the office. How can I go to Maui for 30 days? How can I run a software company if my team cannot make decisions without me being there?” (16:41—17:24) “We're struggling to even hire people right now. But I think the fact that we are afraid to delegate, and we're doing a lot of jobs that are beyond our pay grade, I think that's a problem for us.” (17:51—18:06) “You have to have the right person with the right training. And I see it all the time. It's like, ‘Oh, well, if the hygienist has downtime, she should call the recall.' Uh-uh. No. No — not unless she has the right verbal skills.” (19:21—19:37) “How many people get to answer a phone in a dental practice before they get trained on doing that?” (20:08—20:15) “I cannot tell you how many times we've trained an entire team on how to use a software that is designed for the whole team to use while they're still checking patients and doing things. And I get it, production is important. But it's also important to delegate time to non-production, training your team to getting better.” (21:16—21:41) “When you have 20 years of people liking you, you're doing something right. I have seven associates, and all of them have been referred to me by previous associates. That's — you're doing something right. And the thing is, you train people, you share your vision, and you trust them to do their job.” (25:51—26:12) “Treat people well. Literally, when you make the people around...

Rather than just going to a stranger, they would much rather talk to a friend and get a referral.” “If we were paying attention to where our business was going all the time, then we would be better aware, and we'd be able to control the emotions associated with that.” “You're not going into your data to find problems. You're going into your data to find successes.” “We get attached to the outcome of everything, and we shouldn't be attached to the outcome of anything.” “Having systems, having processes, makes everything easier. John Crowder pulls from the different streams of the church to talk about Christilogical Trinitarian theology, grace, union, contemplative practice, intimacy, and mystical Christianity. John and Jason dive into the Cross, Western atonement theories, and the religious industry built upon separation; how Jesus is healing the human race. John describes a relationship with a person, Christ. He invites us to embrace mystery so we might discover that God looks like Jesus. QUOTES “People are grabbing the Trinitarian Father, this gospel message…” “I saw the connection between the church mystics and post-Azusa Street Pentecostalism, it was the presence orientation that connected these streams.” “We've pulled from a lot of different streams; I could see baby Jesus in the bathwater.” “I think there is a merger happening that we got to get a hold of, a Christological, Trinitarian theology that is contemplative in its experience and employment.” “The biggest problem in the church is separation thinking, between you and Jesus, and between Jesus and His Father” “This idea that the Father is turning his back on the Son, that Jesus is the whipping boy for the Father's wrath, this is preached as the gospel, an atonement theory, a twisted one at that, being preached as the gospel in the western church. These atonement theories are demonic in nature. (And) There's almost no grid for what the cross means outside that…” “What did not happen on the cross, which is a complete fabrication, a demonic fairy tale, the Trinity was not imploding on Itself…Jesus was healing the human race…” “There have always been pluralities in the Godhead and He has always desired family” “Religion builds an industry on the concept of separation.”

Creating sustainable self-care practices involves The realization that slowing down is still moving forward Replacing the habits you remove with something positive and fulfilling Asking for and receiving what you want and need Using natural solutions from plants to support your wellness practices Spending quality time in nature   Do you find it hard to carve out time for yourself every single day? Like me, I bet there are days when you feel pulled in a million different directions, tending to everyone's needs but your own. It takes dedication to stick to self-care practices while living a full, and sometimes hectic life. I get how self-care doesn't always go according to plans. That's why I brought on today's guest to share her key wellness practices to embrace despite being overscheduled and busy.   About Jovanka Ciares Jovanka Ciares is the author of Reclaiming Wellness and several other titles. A certified wellness expert, integrative herbalist, nutrition educator, and coach, she offers lectures and workshops in Spanish and English.  Jovanka studied nutrition with bestselling author T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., at his Center for Nutrition Studies (in partnership with Cornell University) and herbalism/plant medicine with Tieraona Low Dog, MD. A native of Puerto Rico, she lives in Los Angeles.   Slowing Down and Getting Support So You Can Do More For Yourself Adapting wellness practices to your life, especially when you're overwhelmed, is no simple task. Yet, as Jovanka explains, transformational habits and rituals can be integrated with ease and grace.  This involves realizing that just because you might be slowing down, you are still moving forward. It also involves replacing the habits you remove with something more fulfilling. You'll likely need to ask others to support you with this. Don't be afraid to do so because receiving in itself is an act of generosity as Jovanka explains.   FInding Natural Support from Plants and Herbs An essential part of Jovanka's process involves the medicinal nature of plants. Whether you need focus, energy, or relaxation, tapping into the power of plants can go a long way in supporting your wellness practices.  Herbs and supplements can restore your endocrine system, support your body, and give your mind what it needs. Jovanka describes how a number of specific adaptogenic herbs can help support and sustain your self-care rituals. What can support you on your path to self-care and wellness? Share your thoughts with me in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “People need to start understanding that they are the experts in their body. The person you look at in the mirror every morning is the expert of you.” [11:19] “A lot of us, especially women, are very generous with our time and energy, but we don't want to receive. Nothing could be more detrimental. We have to learn that the act of receiving is also an act of generosity.” [21:27] “So you find some alternative solutions and, in combination with what your doctor recommends, there is no need for us to struggle through a lot of these hormonal changes.” [29:30] “We are part of mother nature and we need to reconnect with it. It's critical to our health and wellbeing.” [33:50]   In This Episode Understanding that you are the expert of your own body and advocating for what you need for it  [6:30] Reclaiming what fulfills you after removing what doesn't [15:30] How adaptogenic plants can help us adapt and reclaim our wellness [22:30] Why a connection with nature is an integral part of wellness [31:15]   Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code ‘podcast' for 10% off your order at the Essentially Whole Store Here Jovanka Ciares' Website Follow Jovanka on Facebook | YouTube | Instagram | Linkedin | Twitter The Reclaiming Wellness Book   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Leadership, Management, and Team Engagement (A COVID-19 Conference Favorite) Episode #406 with Josey Sewell Do you find yourself dreading Mondays? Well, 70% of the working world is with you! Employees are disengaged worldwide, and they are increasing in number. And to help prevent you from having frustrated and disconnected workers, Josey Sewell from Dental Intel shares how to grow better leaders and managers and have better team engagement. If you want to create a healthier, more joyful work environment so you can look forward to Mondays, listen to Episode 406 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Only about 15% of the world's workers are engaged. Great managers are critical for worker engagement. Lack of clarity creates chaos and frustration. People want to be coached, not managed. Create vulnerability-based trust with your team. Don't be afraid of numbers and data. Quotes: “People are looking for purpose in work, and it's up to us to provide them and help them see that purpose. And when you can do that, it's amazing how your team can support you.” (10:49—11:02) “[According to a Gallup poll,] just 15% of the world's workers are engaged at work or appeared to have great jobs. 70% are just not engaged. And what I mean by “not engaged” is that maybe they clock in, and they clock out, and they're not necessarily super excited to be there, but they're not really that miserable. They're just in-between. They just do enough to not get fired. And, unfortunately, 70% of the world's population is living that. The other 15% are actively disengaged. So, what that means is they are miserable, and they want to commiserate with everybody and make everything difficult for everybody else.” (11:51—12:35) “One of the things that I learned is that that 70% [who are not engaged], sometimes they were on the fence. And what we found in working with a really large team is that their choice to become the active employee or the disengaged employee often had to do with how we dealt with the 15% of people who were disengaged. Because if they got away with whatever, and there was no accountability, and they made everybody miserable, but it didn't matter that they didn't follow the rules, why on earth should I really put forth a lot of time and effort into this team or into this company? So, make sure that you are consistent with your rules. If you say this is the way that it's going to be, you stick with it.” (12:36—13:16) “Gallup says that if we increased even just to 50% of people being actively engaged in work, the world would literally change overnight. Actively engaged employees boom your business, inspire teams, and solve problems instead of creating them. They volunteer in the community, have fewer workplace accidents, have better health and well-being, and make fewer mistakes.” (13:26—13:51) “The single, most profound, distinct, and clarifying finding ever: 70% of the variance in team engagement is determined solely by the manager. It's the manager that makes such a difference.” (14:24—14:42) “Being a great doer of tasks does not always make somebody a great manager. And there's not a lot of training or things that are available for managers, so you have to put an emphasis on helping them lead and manage people.” (15:29—15:43) “If you're just doing an annual performance review like they used to do decades ago, that is not enough. [Employees] want constant feedback and coaching.” (16:37—16:46) “People don't want to be managed. People want to be coached. And so, the manager has to turn into being a coach. The coach does not only just provide answers with every question that's asked; they ask good questions to facilitate learning. They're not judgmental. They're supportive. They do not dictate what must be done. They facilitate development and learning. Command and control is out, and collaborate and coordinate is in. So, it's much more that your team members, every single one of them, is leading within their position.”...

Often we make relationships about what the other person is or isn't doing and we have the tendency to focus on our reactive emotions. What feels good and what doesn't. My lab partner today is someone the Scaling Up Nation can  learn a lot from: Michael Byerley of Global Water Technology, Inc. I met Michael several years ago, and I was instantly amazed by how put together and intelligent he was. His ability to learn and listen made a strong impression on me, that when I started the Rising Tide Mastermind, Michael was one of the first people I reached out to! Michael Byerley started in the water treatment industry when he interned at Global Water Technology, Inc. in 2009. He eventually joined the company full time after graduating from Northwestern University. GWT was also founded by one of the few women in the industry, Michael's very own mother, Maria Villarreal-Byerley, in 1990.  With years of experience under his belt, Michael was able to position GWT as a company that continually achieved high growth. GWT has grown 2,400% since 2011 and achieved an average annual growth rate of 42% the past nine years through high organic growth and the acquisition of nine companies. Michael has also expanded the reach of GWT to 26 states, established four terminals across the US, launched their headquarters, and started up many new high grossing product and service lines. Aside from all of these achievements, Michael is also very proud of the work culture he helped to create at GWT. The company is committed to maintaining a positive employee and customer-first culture, transparency, communication, quality of service, and technical resourcefulness which his mother started 31 years ago.    Bottom line: Michael Byerley is going to share his career journey working at a legacy water treatment company.  Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client.   -Trace    Timestamps:  What don't you know [01:33] Being born into Water Treatment[08:50] Becoming an effective water treater [15:40] Developing a learning mindset [19:21] Joining the Rising Tide Mastermind [23:39] Complimenting growth with acquisitions [28:40] Lessons learned from acquiring 9 companies [35:14] Advice to people just getting into water treatment [41:56] Lightning round questions [43:50] Thinking On Water With James [53:20]   Thinking On Water With James: In this week's episode, we're thinking about ways to calculate Cycles of Concentration or, as some say, Concentration Ratio. How many ways can and do you calculate this useful number? Do you use conductivity?  Neutralized  or unneutralized conductivity for boilers? Total Hardness? Calcium Hardness? Magnesium Hardness? Chlorides? Silica? Total Alkalinity? Why can't you use pH? Can you use water meters? What are the benefits and disadvantages of each? What if the numbers from the various versions don't agree with each other? What added chemical products may interfere with the accuracy of the calculations? Take this week to think about Cycles of Concentration or Concentration Ratio and why it is more than just a number.   Quotes: “People are not afraid if you don't know, they are more afraid if you don't communicate.” - Michael Byerley “If you simply say “Let me get back to you, or I don't know, or I'll refine my answer”, they (your customers) can't poke a hole in that answer. They can only accept your honesty.” - Michael Byerley “Everyday in the water treatment industry is supposed to be a learning experience.” - Michael Byerley “I live my life by listening.” - Michael Byerley “Global Water Technology doesn't buy a company just for the sake of buying companies. We don't grow just for the sake of growing.”- Michael Byerley  “We want to make this all about the clients and the people.” - Michael Byerley “If you decide to go to water treatment, lean in. The Truth About Sugar Addiction with Rachel Murray, RN, RHN

Like many aspects of nutrition, sugar addiction is no stranger to controversy. Some feel that everyone is addicted to sugar and there's no way to enjoy sugar in moderation. Others have a more nuanced perspective. To break it all down, I've brought on someone who is well-versed in this topic who will help you figure out if sugar is negatively impacting you.   About Rachel Murray Rhn Rachel Murray owns and runs her Holistic Nutrition business out of Elora, ON. Her passion for health and wellness was established while earning her Bachelor of Science specializing in Health Promotion at Laurentian University. After this, she went on to complete a bachelor's degree in Nursing and worked in the hospital setting for eight years. During this time, Rachel struggled with allergies and digestive issues. A few years later, thyroid and fertility issues also surfaced. After conventional treatments only masked symptoms and did not address the root cause of the problem, she was determined to find a natural solution. It was these struggles and experiences that initiated her discovery and pursuit of a holistic nutrition career, which she has found better serves her passion for educating and helping people live their best life. Rachel takes the whole person into account when she completes her assessments and is, therefore, able to create an individualized wellness plan to meet her clients where they are at, and she is committed to their success. Her specialty is working with people with sugar/carb addiction, which she came upon rather serendipitously, but has truly found her passion for working with this incredible population.   What Sugar Addiction Really Is We may imagine a sugar addiction as eating a plate of cupcakes in one sitting, but Rachel explains how it can also exist within what appears to be an otherwise healthy diet. People of any body size can have it and anyone can experience the blood sugar issues that come with a high-sugar diet. This affects our mental and emotional states as well as physical health. It can be hard to understand if sugar addiction is affecting you. Rachel asks some questions from her quiz to get you thinking if this is something to consider. This includes determining if you eat more sweets than you intend to, thinking about if you've neglected your responsibilities as a result, and if you've used sweets to relieve discomfort.   Recovery from Sugar Addiction is Possible There is hope for the sugar addict. Rachel has seen how personal discovery and a dedication to self-improvement go a long way to getting it under control.  More simply, just avoiding sweets is key. Rachel explains how, when you remove sugar from your life, you'll start to see the world a little more clearly. Since not everyone's triggers are the same, this will look different for different people. The important point to remember is that, with the right guidance, anyone can recover from their sugar addiction. Have you noticed sugar cravings affecting what you eat? On today's episode, Matt and Garrett chat about ‘time of possession', an important concept in communication about which there seems to be some confusion these days. It appears that a lot of people don't understand that, when it comes to building relationships, building a database, and building a business, this concept is really a fundamental piece of communication. So to clarify this for everyone today, our hosts discuss just what the term ‘time of possession' actually means, as well as its importance and why asking questions is crucial.   They explain why many find it difficult to grasp the concept of ‘time of possession' and how many make the mistake of failing to keep conversations going simply because they fail to ask questions. They touch on the subject of one-uppers who are all about stealing the ‘time of possession', and discuss why you should master the skill of asking better questions as this makes all the difference in conversations. He explains that the strongest and toughest men will always maintain a soft spot for their children, which he relates to today, having three children of his own. Billy shares the most important lessons he has learned from his father and how he has grown as a person because of them. He now refers to his father as the best man he has ever known. Tune into this week's episode of Real Men Feel for a conversation with Billy Potter about seeing the best in your father, understanding the importance of feeling safe and loved in your family unit, and why valuing family over everything is the motto so many people live by. Pollyanna is an old classic Disney, if you've ever seen it. I mean it's an old one. Before my time even, I think. But I remember watching that time and time again, and maybe the whole positive thing comes from… There is a thing called the Glad Game in that movie. Alright, and whenever things are bad, you just gotta find a reason, gotta find the good in it. You gotta find a reason to be glad you are in whatever situation you are in. And I always think of that whenever… Cuz people say that to me all the time.” (23:20-24:03) • “I wish more men knew that there was more value in them than just working.” (35:43-35:46) Links Connect with Billy Potter: https://www.facebook.com/billy.potter.33671 Connect with Andy and the Real Men Feel Podcast: Instagram | @realmenfeelshow & @andy_grant Personal Website | theandygrant.com for coaching, healing, and book info! We all have goals. Yet, it takes consistency to achieve any worthwhile objective. Whether they are health or business-related, today's guest shares how she stays consistent in her efforts to achieve whatever she sets her mind to. If you have a big goal but are feeling unsure about how to take action, this episode is for you.   About Kritikaa Agnani, RD Kritikaa Agnani is a Registered Dietitian with a Master of Clinical Nutrition degree, and experience in caring for patients both in the hospital and one-on-one setting. Her specialties include weight loss and athletic performance. Kritikaa discovered her passion for educating after she taught the course "Nutrition and Diet Therapy" at Collin Community College. She then began to create educational YouTube videos to combat common nutrition myths and misconceptions. Her goal is to help people create a healthier, more connected relationship with food and to make quality nutrition education more accessible. In her free time, she enjoys weight training and playing the piano.   Finding The Right Information For Your Health In this episode, we begin by discussing the pitfalls of misinformation. A lot of the nutrition literature online presents itself as one-size-fits-all simple solutions. However, the reality is much more nuanced. It's tough to know what is credible and what applies to you in particular. Kritikaa explains how she goes about discerning helpful from unhelpful and fact from fiction.   Is Weight-Loss the Right Approach to Health? We also talk about a controversial topic in the world of nutrition: whether intentional weight loss can ever be healthy. The fact of the matter is that sometimes it is healthy and sometimes it isn't - it all depends on the individual.  Everyone has a different body, different genetics, a different lifestyle. There are some instances when it is better to lose some weight to improve metabolic health and there are times when that would be unhealthy. Kritikaa explains the subtleties of her approach to helping her patients determine what's best for them.   Establishing Habits As The Way To Achieving Goals As far as making and working towards goals are concerned, we discuss the importance of building habits and setting realistic expectations. Kritikaa and I know the importance of focusing on implementing habits rather than strictly worrying about the outcome. The things we put effort into take time. It may be months or even years before you see results. This can apply to weight-loss goals as well as your goals to have a successful business. Perhaps the hardest part of this is staying motivated when the day-to-day progress is hard to see. Kritikaa's main piece of advice is to make the process itself enjoyable. Find an exercise or routine you enjoy. See the process of whatever you're doing as joyful. If you see exercise or work as merely something that you have to do, then it will be hard to stay motivated. How do you establish habits that you enjoy doing? In this episode, McKay gives insights to what positive reframing is about, beginning with the story of the scientist, Galileo, and how he was able to reframe his mindset despite criticism. Why you should step up and take calculated risks. Building your belief window through cognitive framing. 4 basic steps to reframing your mindset. I Heart My Life Show

The universe rewards the brave. Sometimes, we're not entirely sure where it is we're meant to end up, but we just have a niggling feeling that we're destined for more. On the other hand, we might think we have it all worked out and a clear direction of where we're going, only to find that it was just a stepping stone to somewhere even greater than we could have ever imagined. That was certainly the case for my guest for this episode, Michelle Sorro, who, having secured her career in TV (something she had dreamt of since she was a little girl), found her date with destiny after being gifted a ticket to a Tony Robbins event. Michelle is living proof that the Universe is rooting for us all and that if we leap, the net will appear. There will always be twists and turns along the way, but one thing she has learnt with hindsight is that there are always clues if you're quiet enough to listen. That the destination is actually in the doing. The key is to follow what lights you up, and go forth with openness, courage and the willingness to surrender. Join us in this inspirational episode, where she reveals all about her story, from chasing what she thought was her calling, to the moment divine intervention stepped in, right up to today where she helps other women fully express and hone their spiritual gifts so they can turn their passion into profits. Prepare to be moved as much as you are motivated - this episode is a must-listen for anyone who has that inner knowing and is ready to walk the path to purpose. In this episode…  The story behind the success. Recognizing divine intervention when it steps in. Why passion doesn't always equate to purpose. Those that love you will always support you. Taking chances opens doors. Action breeds clarity. The Universe rewards the brave. You have to show up, serve and sell to make an impact. Michelle's advice for living a life better than your dreams. Quotes: “People are like, you just seem to do anything. You just seem like you're so fearless. I'm like, I've always got fear running through me or anxiety running through me. The difference is that I don't let it stop me.” - Michelle Sorro “I was blessed enough to generate my first six figures in like six months, with no ads, no emails... I didn't even know what the hell I was doing. I didn't have a website. [...] Anyone who's got a calling. If you listen to that nudge, I mean, you just might be surprised how much the universe is rooting for you and supporting you in the law of abundance.” - Michelle Sorro “I was open, I was exhausted. I was willing, I surrendered fully and I dropped to my knees in just sheer exhaustion and open-heartedness. And I heard a divine intervention in the message of, ‘you're not going to be doing TV for the rest of your life'. That was a little girl dream of a five-year-old who desperately wanted to be significant and believe that she mattered.” - Michelle Sorro “We see that in our community all the time. People don't want to be sleazy, but the reality is they're running a business, not a charity shop. And so they have to get comfortable with sales very quickly in order to keep that vision moving forward. And I really think, you know, especially as a coach, it's very hard to impact and help people unless they're actually in your program and in your world. And so I look at it as my duty to sell to people.” - Emily Williams “I'm on a mission to empower millions, to be seen and heard. What I've really realized over the past few years, and especially as I get older and my friends get older, it's like they begin to shrink and they start to play small and they become more invisible or more introverted when they weren't that way maybe 10, 15 years ago. And so I want us to all be fully self-expressed.” - Michelle Sorro Links & Resources:  Stay up to date with the latest episodes: Follow the I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/i-heart-my-life-show/id1330534524 Subscribe to the I Heart My Life Show on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zw6fI37FrfVjZMXlMiZZ6 Connect with Michelle: Michelle's Website https://www.michelle-sorro.com/ Michelle on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/michellesorro/ Learn more in Wallace D. Combining faiths and religious traditions into a ceremony can be both beautiful and confusing. Our guest, Rabbi Block is the master of dual and even multi-faith ceremonies. And of course, being that he is a Rabbi, we are getting some great insight into Jewish ceremonies as well. Rabbi Kenneth Block (https://rabbionthego.com/) began his rabbinical career in 1974 as the Rabbi of the Jewish Center in Havre de Grace, Maryland. In 1978, Rabbi Block was honored with the Boston College Alumni Association Award of Excellence for Religion. Rabbi Block retired after 40 years as an addiction Chaplain for the Veterans Administration Maryland Health Care Systems and as the Chaplain for the Bel Air, Maryland Volunteer Fire Company. Aside from the innumerable weddings and other religious and secular ceremonies Rabbi Block has performed in association with specific organizations, he has written and performed well over 500 ceremonies outside of those affiliations. Rabbi Block describes Jewish ceremonies, as well as weddings that are combined with other clergy and belief systems. Big Takeaways * There is a difference between being religious and being observant. Rabbi Block highlights how religion is about having relationships with others, so that makes marriage religious, inherently. * Rabbi Block officiates many many weddings, and he is not only available to a certain crowd, or congregation. In fact, his credo is, “No couple should be denied the right to be joined together.” * Fun history bit: Bridesmaids and groomsmen were originally included as a line of defense when two rival families came together. * If the officiant is your dad and is also walking you down the aisle, logistically you should absolutely have a planner to help with this. There is a lot of thought that goes into this process and no one wants to be worried about this on their wedding day! If you must do it on your own, get all the right resources ahead of time (planning courses, etc.) so you aren't scrambling on the day of. Well if you weren't religious you wouldn't be talking to me, so it's important to separate being religious from being observant.” - Rabbi Block “The goal is always one ceremony, two traditions, regardless of what the two traditions are.” - Rabbi Block “I have come a millimeter from being Obi-Wan. I have been two millimeters from being Gandalf. “We do business with people, and that's really the foundation of LinkedIn,” says Benita Samuels, self-proclaimed LinkedIn junkie. She goes on to explain that LinkedIn rewards people for participating and being present in the platform's community. While LinkedIn may have originated as a place to put your digital resume, Benita warns listeners that the platform has drastically shifted gears since Microsoft acquired it in 2016. Now, LinkedIn is a place where individuals and businesses should share who they are, what they do, and how they help. In this digital age, LinkedIn provides a new forum for networking...and who wants to actively connect with the person in the corner at a networking event, who never speaks their mind or shares their authentic self? Benita started out her career in corporate brand marketing, increasing the visibility of major brands from San Pellegrino to Nestle to Disney. She got started right as the digital world was starting to explode and has witnessed the evolution of marketing throughout the digital age. After many years in the corporate world, Benita decided to branch out and started her own business, Visibility Solutions Group, where she helps solopreneurs and small business owners boost their digital presence. Benita has also spent 19 years as a working mom and aims to set the foundation for her daughters to become strong, confident women and business people down the road. Tune into this week's episode of The Working Moms for an informative conversation between host Pam Maas and Benita Samuels about how to create an intentional, thoughtful and engaging presence on LinkedIn. If you are a business owner looking to increase your digital visibility, you won't want to miss this opportunity to learn from one of the most knowledgeable LinkedIn gurus out there! Quotes • “People always tell you that time goes by really quickly, and the truth of the matter: it is and it does. And so, where you are setting really wonderful examples for your children being a successful working mom, make sure you take the time to just sit and be with them, play with them….Take the time because you deserve it. Work is wonderful, I love my work, but those moments you can only capture when they're happening, and you've gotta stop to appreciate them.” (0:51-1:48) • “As a small business owner or a solopreneur, you don't have the same financial access to tools and individuals who have a level of experience that could benefit you as a small business owner….The truth of the matter is that everything I have over the years can easily be adapted to any different varying sizes of businesses. And so it just seemed to make sense to me.” (4:35-5:20) • “First and foremost, it doesn't matter if you're a solopreneur or a big business owner. Everybody should be on LinkedIn if you are in business. That is just the foundation because that is where people start.” (7:11-7:24) • “Let's remember that LinkedIn is not your digital resume….Your LinkedIn profile should really be about who you are, what you do, and how you help.” (9:46-10:16) • “Social media gives this illusion that you have a relationship. So, people often say, ‘Oh, Benita, I know you! I see you on LinkedIn all the time.' I may have never met them. But they have this belief system and a trust that they know me because I'm sharing content on LinkedIn.” (16:02-16:22) • “Start every day with a beautiful cup of coffee...and open up your LinkedIn and spend 15 minutes going through your feed and reading what people have to say and commenting and being part of the community. That will just start to help you practice that muscle.” (30:12-30:33) Links https://visibilitysolutionsgroup.com/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/benita-samuels/  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theworkingmoms  Pamela Maass on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamela-maass/  Law Mother Website: https://www.lawmother.com  Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

Why are you working? It's a simple question with a complex answer. It needs to be more than just making money or you won't last long in this business. Today's guest explains how to find the motivation to do great work by recognizing your power to create positive impacts. Key Takeaways Instead of asking customers what they want you to create for them, ask them how they want people to feel after seeing their videos. The work that you do should have purpose not just for your client, but for yourself. This is what is needed to keep you motivated to continue to produce great work. To identify your purpose in your work, think about who inspired you to do this work and why. Then look at your unique abilities, gifts, and talents and how you use those to serve others. About Davin Salvagno Davin Salvagno is the Founder & CEO of PurposePoint, the author of Finding Purpose at Work, and co-founder of The Purpose Summit. He is an inspirational thought leader and speaker known for connecting purpose, people, and performance. Having spent nearly two decades serving in various leadership roles in finance, human resources, operations, and marketing with Fortune 500 companies, his insights and talks have helped hundreds of organizations across the world engage their purpose and inspire their people. The Impact You Have in the Work You Do Everything that you do has an impact. Whether it's big or small, you have an effect on other people. Davin talks about how we should be reflecting on what type of impact that is and learn to recognize it when it happens. He explains how following the “impact trail” shows you just how much bigger your influence is than you might have imagined. Approaching Experience as a Commodity Davin also explains how you can provide more for your clients by focusing on the experience that you provide and how you can transform what they do. Rather than relying purely on your products and services, emphasizing how you make them feel will often be enough to create loyal repeat clients. This type of approach will not only help your clients make a bigger impact, but it will also give you and your work more purpose. It will motivate you to keep working as you create positive impacts. As you utilize your talents and abilities to positively transform how other people feel, you'll find that there is no limit to the impact that you can create. What is a purpose point in your life? What unique power do you have to impact the world? Leave a comment on the episode page! Description: Today we welcome to the podcast Jeremy Grant of the Better Identity Coalition. Jeremy's roots in identity go back all the way to his college days at University of Michigan —one of the earliest adopters in the higher education space of the Smart Card. He has been involved since the early days of government internet regulation working with Bill Clinton, Virginia senator Chuck Robb, the Obama administration, the Department of Defense, NIST, and doing various legislative work as a staffer. In addition to being the Coordinator for the Better Identity Coalition, Jeremy now works for DC-based law firm Venable as well as a consultant to clients in several sectors. His focus is primarily in financial services, healthcare, IT, and recently in unemployment fraud due to billions of dollars lost during the pandemic. Jeremy dives into the specifics of why digital identity and cybersecurity are national issues that the private sectors simply cannot tackle on their own. Richard and Jeremy share their sentiments on creating a centralized and holistic approach to protecting and regulating identity in the United States.   Key Takeaways: [2:26] Jeremy's background and how he came to be working in the identity space. [7:57] What is Jeremy's day-to-day work like? [11:29] Where is DC's attention in terms of identity? [13:45] Jeremy's thoughts on the landscape of digital identity.[18:30] What is the tipping point for when action takes place in legislation? [22:15] How much can any private organization do to push the needle for digital identity and cybersecurity? [29:56] What does Jeremy see for state-based privacy initiatives?   Quotes: ●“People tell me all the time I have a dream job.” —Richard ●“I do have a great job. I really love it.” —Jeremy ●“How does stuff get done in DC? I mean you've got a mix of things in the executive branch and the legislative branch in and around identity where there's just a ton of attention these days.” —Jeremy ●“We've now seen bipartisan legislation introduced through the Digital Identity Act that's getting a lot more attention partially this past year with what we've been going through with the pandemic and digital becoming that much more important.” —Jeremy ●“A lot of regulators are just interested in getting perspective on how we look at identity.” —Jeremy ●“People are being recognized for these transformative changes and a lot of this stuff is being driven off of identity.” —Richard ●“How do we solve this nationally at a digital level in a way that might actually work? You can't just solve it in UI, and you can't just solve it in banking, and you can't just solve it in-house. You need a more holistic approach where people can do this everywhere.” —Jeremy ●“It is a challenge at times to get people to sort of take things up a level and look at this more of a national priority as opposed to a sector priority.” —Jeremy ●“At the end of the day when it comes to the identity proofing side of things, the government is the only authoritative assurer of identity. And everybody in the industry who sells an identity verification product is trying to guess what only the government knows.” —Jeremy ●“You cannot solve this without government help.” —Jeremy ●“It almost seems like we have elevated the digital capabilities of everything in this world except for identity. It's like we left identity behind.” —Richard ●“One of the things that I've found challenging in my digital identity evangelizing and proselytizing is this absence of a national data privacy standard here in the United States.” —Richard ●“If you keep protecting the stuff but not protecting the people, all I gotta do is be you and I get your stuff.” —Richard ●“Industry has come around to the idea that we need a national privacy law probably five years too late.” —Jeremy ●“Doing nothing is also a policy choice.” —Jeremy   Mentioned in This Episode: The Better Identity Coalition Indentiverse NIST Venable LLP

I bet nearly everyone has had expectations of what their body should look like or be able to do. These ideas come from many places, unusually external and unhealthy ones. Yet, when you fail to live up to them, grief and unhealthy habits commonly result. Today’s guest helps her clients reframe how they understand their bodies so that they can build new healthier mindsets and practices.   About Steph Prangley Steph Prangley is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and owner of Infinity Hill Nutrition, a virtual private practice specializing in women’s hormone health. She helps women with PCOS gain energy, improve ovulation, and stabilize moods so they can accomplish all of their important life goals while being fully present in their relationships. Steph believes it’s possible to gain freedom from the painful and embarrassing symptoms of PCOS by reframing body grief to body acceptance and learning how to trust your body and read its signals. With compassion and kindness, she gently guides her clients with mindset work, nutrition, lifestyle, and their own intuition to build body trust and successfully manage symptoms for the long run.   Reversing the Disconnection Between You and Your Body Body grief gets in the way of healing. It removes you from the present moment as you grieve for the loss of some imaginary future or the way your body used to be. Steph describes how this disconnect can be reversed by accepting and honoring your body. Once this is achieved, you can learn how to listen to what your body is telling you. When you understand your body’s signals you can cut through all the outside noise of society, positive changes will follow. With this comes the understanding that healing is not only possible, but you’re in control of it.   An Intuitive Approach to Healing As you can imagine, mindset is central to this. It’s important to remember that just because somebody has an “ideal” body, it doesn’t mean that they’re happy. Detaching your emotional state from health outcomes while also working towards your goal is the key here.  Steph teaches her clients to do this by helping them hone their intuitive senses. When you find yourself craving food or feeling a certain way, it’s time to stop and examine the source of those feelings. This approach helps you remove self-judgment and identify healthy choices for your body. How can you start intuitively listening to your body’s signals? But when you have to say no to the things that you love doing, that’s a whole new level of grief, or emotional grief that you have to deal with.” [15:34] “Humans are messy and we make mistakes. Our life changes. Thankfully we’re adaptable and we can ebb and flow with that. I think we get into trouble when we try to make things flat and straight with no variability.” [24:32] “You’re the only expert in your body. I can’t even really tell you what to eat. I can give you education on the science behind nutrients and what we know about how all of these things play into our health overall, but the only long-term strategy we can have is getting in touch with the inner-self.” [47:16]   Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! The 2 Kinds of Dental Patients and Why It's Important to You as a Dentist Episode #304 with Dr. Gary DeWood There are patients who believe they're healthy, and there are patients who believe they have significant issues. And today's guest, Dr. Gary DeWood, explains how these mindsets develop and how it affects how you interact with them. Kirk Behrendt and Dr. DeWood talk about the importance of words and how it can change the way patients understand and value the services you provide in your practice. Words matter! For tips on attracting the right type of patients, listen to Episode 304 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Dentists need to change their mindset and culture. Many dental patients think they're healthy, and dentists perpetuate that belief. Don't use “dental” and “insurance” in the same sentence. Say “benefit plans” or “benefits”. Value your hygienists and show it! Instead of “cleaning,” call it “hygiene therapy”. Ask patients what dental health means to them. Quotes: “People coming to the dentist is like people going to a Broadway show. They get there, they're not exactly sure what's going to happen. Sometimes, it can be unpleasant, or even unwanted. But whatever happens is going to create an experience. And if that experience is one that exceeds their expectations, it's going to be remembered and valued.” (05:28—05:57) “If you ask the appropriate questions, some patients will decide that you are not the place for them to come. And that's important too, because one of the worst things that can happen is when that doesn't happen and they show up, and their expectations are not met because we were never really on the same page. And unfortunately, they go out and they tell other people about those things.” (07:07—07:28) “Patients who believe they're healthy think they're coming for the reason that we have trained the public to come to a dentist. And I will tell you that this isn't my question, this was Lisa's question, a friend. She would ask people, ‘What significant dental issues are you dealing with right now?' And most patients said, ‘I don't really have any issues. I just need to get my teeth cleaned.'” (08:07—08:30) “[Patients who] believe they're healthy, if they have an issue, it ain't significant. And almost always, they already believe they know the answer. People who claim a significant issue are different. They're usually looking for answers. And so, that differentiation made it possible to have some idea who was coming.” (08:58—09:18) “If you want to change the mindset around dental benefit plans in your practice, there are two things you can do. First of all, answer this question: what minds have to change first? Ours. If we believe that dental benefit plans suck, we tell people that through our mindset. Because believe me, whatever you believe is being transmitted, no matter how you think you talk, I promise you it's being transmitted. And the only thing that happens then is that you and the patient wind up in a little muddy hole whining about how terrible it is. Tell me how that benefits anybody.” (15:20—16:08) “I remember people walking in and plunking down, when they had to bring all the paperwork — you know, you had to sign all the forms ahead of time and they had to bring all this stuff — and they'd throw it down on the counter and they would go, ‘I have this, but it sucks.' And you want to go, ‘Yeah, they all suck.' Don't do that! Please don't do that.” (16:15—16:32) “I believe one way to change culture, which is part of mindset, it's mindset now translated to action. So, here's my recommendation: stop saying the words “dental” and “insurance” in the same sentence. In fact, stop saying those two words together in your practice, without exception. Say “benefit plans” and “dental benefits,” or “benefits”. People will start asking you things. Words are important. You want to change your mindset? Start talking about things differently.” (16:41—17:10) “I think most dental...

This is Good Sh*t: What Every Dental Professional Should Know Episode #301 with Dr. Uche Odiatu Two apples a day could keep the doctor away! But very few North Americans — including dentists — consume the recommended amount of fiber and other nutrients. For a lesson on nutrition and its effects on the gut microbiome, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Uche Odiatu to talk about how a healthy gut can lead to a better and longer life. It can also help you stay ahead of the curve in dentistry! For advice on becoming healthier and starting the health conversation with your patients, listen to Episode 301 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: All disease begins in the gut. Understand gut health to get ahead of the curve in dentistry. Learn about gut health, and overall health and wellness will become effortless. You can begin to change or improve your gut microbiome in a day. Intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, and caloric restriction are ways to extend life. Get healthy yourself before giving your patients health advice. Enjoy food mindfully, and let food be your medicine! Quotes: “People often have heard about gut health, but they're not really sure how to apply it. You can tell they're not applying it because they show up sometimes tired. They're often not sure why they have brain fog. They're not at the weight they want. If you're literally not at the weight you want, you don't understand gut health, because when you understand gut health at a deep level, weight becomes effortless.” (06:06—06:27) “If you're one of the 50 million Americans suffering from [low] energy level, to immune system issues, to not ideal weight, to poor sleep, to brain fog, to accelerated aging — if you actually look like your driver's license picture — you need to know more about gut health. Because when you understand it, health becomes effortless.” (06:54—07:12) “Total health is where to go. Patients are starving for healthcare providers that look at all of them and not just your little area, your little silo. That little silo is great, but you start with total health — medical history, anything new, how are you sleeping, are you tired, do you exercise, how are you eating lately. That's how all my appointments start. Start with the bigger picture, then you go into the smaller picture.” (09:38—10:03) “The gut microbiome is an amazing modulator of gene expression. The whole idea is your genes load your gun; your lifestyle pulls the trigger. So, genes are basically just a blueprint.” (11:30—11:43) “A way to manipulate genes is to have the healthiest microbiome possible. In order to do that, you've got to look at a number of different things. The microbiome — a very esoteric subject. And people don't realize, you tweak it a bit, you could end up completely different. In how long? 24 hours. What you eat today, you can tweak your microbiome. In three days of junk food eating, you can actually lose 40% of your resident gut bacteria, which decimates you. And sure, you can get them back by having some good, healthy days. But some people lose species, and they lose them forever.” (12:13—12:48) “We have 100 trillion single-celled organisms in our bodies, and they outnumber the human cells, the cells of human origin, 10:1. So, 98% of them are in the GI tract. About 2% of them are on your skin, under armpits, hair, nose, etc. But they are a powerful manipulator of your genes. They also train your immune system, because 80% of your immune system lies in the 26 feet of your digestive tract. So, people with poor digestive health often have immune system problems.” (13:24—13:53) “If you have gut issues, digestive issues, from constipation to reflux to Crohn's colitis, if you have a disrupted gut microbiome, it's a precursor to prediabetes and diabetes. So, that being said, the microbiome is the collective, invisible, single-celled organisms that call you home, and they have a symbiotic relationship. You feed them, they feed you...

More than ever, brands are conducting bigger-picture business. Besides the bottom line, the importance of leading with purpose, fulfilling their workforce, and making a real impact on the world are driving decisions. But in the hierarchy of decision-making, what does leading with a mission really mean, and are businesses willing to sacrifice to uphold it? Organization theorist Jeanne Ross decided to find out and talks about her findings in discussion with Kumud Kalia, Chief Information Officer at Guardant Health.   Key Takeaways: [0:53] Mobile technology, AI, and the internet have dramatically increased the speed of interaction. As a result, customer expectations have skyrocketed. One fast-growing industry is BioTech, and what more urgent need for digital transformation than saving lives? [3:04] Kumud is a High-Tech Veteran and has led IT departments at major companies such as Cylance, Inc. and Akamai Technologies. Now, as CIO of Guardant Health, he is part of a team leading the efforts to serve millions of patients around the world. [4:31] Adoption is one of the main challenges in any new technology. At Guardant Health, there is an urgency for doctors and oncologists to adopt their offerings. Kumud talks about building trust with doctors through data and FDA approvals, so they can see that investing time and effort into learning will pay dividends as a result. [6:51] Kumud describes the cross-functional teams at Guardant working as fast as possible to save lives. Although the people come from different departments, they each know their clearly defined mission and common objective. They can also work independently and accept accountability for setting their own goals and outlines. [9:25] Why don’t they hire more people? It’s still hard to find the right people to join the team. [10:11] Kumud talks about what he looks for in recruitment. There is still a war for talent, pandemic or not. [13:51] Growing cross-functional teams that are autonomous but aligned takes management a long time to get right. [16:01] Kumud and Jo discuss technical debt in fast-growing companies. There is a balance to getting off the ground initially, but using systems that won’t create too big of an obstacle in the future. [18:44] People and culture can also be an aspect of technical dept. Kumud remarks that our agile teams will help us with technical debt, but it may be tough to recognize. Today, I am excited to share a great talk I had with Victoria Albina during which we discussed very common themes in women’s lives. From what it’s like being “the good girl”, “the fixer” and taking on other people’s burdens and emotions. We talk about how to get ourselves out of these patterns while also becoming more observant rather than reactive.   Victoria Albina is a Certified Life Coach and Breathwork Meditation Guide with a passion for helping women realize that they are their own best healers, so they can break free from codependency, perfectionism, and people-pleasing and reclaim their joy.   She is a UCSF-trained Family Nurse Practitioner, has a Masters degree in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health, and a BA in Latin American Studies from Oberlin College. Victoria has been working in health & wellness for over 20 years and lives on occupied Lenape territory in New York's Hudson Valley.   Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation: Victoria talks about her own healing journey. Victoria shares how she leads her practice. Expectations, obligations, and conceptualization of self can become patterns that deregultate the nervous system. The state of your nervous systems dictates the story that you feed into your body. What is the polyvagal system? How do you begin the work after you raise your awareness? Acceptance can be really challenging. Working on your balance. How we use distractions to get away from certain feelings. The role of dopamine in your body. Choose your actions intentionally. Learn to separate the circumstances of life and our thoughts. Victoria gives advice to those women who are ready to make the mindset shift but struggle with the consequences that this might bring to their relationships. Trust yourself to love yourself. Victoria shares her favorite tool against personal criticism.   Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. In these challenging times, body image struggles can get amplified fast. But, if you are prepared with practical ways to get through and understand a bad body image day, you can stop those gremlin thoughts in their tracks and reclaim the power you give your body. Key Takeaways If You Want To Stop A Bad Body Image Day In Its Tracks, You Should: Acknowledge your gremlin dialogue and question why you are allowing yourself to believe the stories diet culture has told you View body positivity as a social justice issue and embrace body positivity for all bodies Allow space for the grieving of what society celebrates and venture into the tidal wave of your emotions Give yourself permission to listen to your body and do what feels right for your body in the here and now Body Image With Bri Campos Brianna Campos, or Body Image with Bri, as she is known on Instagram, is a mental health counselor, therapist, and body image coach. Bri is passionate about helping others maneuver through their body image journey and heal the relationship that her clients have with their bodies. Getting Over Your Gremlin Thoughts Bri views the nasty thoughts or critical self-talk we engage with as your ‘gremlin voice’. These thoughts can often be messy and uncomfortable, which is why we cover them up with the stories we have been told by diet culture.  If you want to push through these gremlin voices, you need to acknowledge your inner dialogue, allow space for grief, and give yourself permission to be where you are right now, regardless of where everybody else is. By auditing your thoughts and focusing on the ones that align with your core values, you can choose to love yourself in a way that feels right for you. Healing Your Body Image Relationship Body image is not just about how you look. Body image encompasses everything from body positivity to privilege and your relationship with diet culture. The work begins when you start to question the stories that you tell yourself and take the leap into the tidal wave of grief and acceptance.  While it is not always easy, dismantling how we treat ourselves and our bodies is essential in healing your relationship with your body and getting over your bad body image days with grace. How are you giving yourself permission to be where you are now during this holiday season? Body image is also how you believe others view you, how those belief systems have you show up in the world. And there is a piece of body positivity in society of how accessible life is for you in your body.” (12:31) “I never believed that I could love my body until it looked the way I wanted it to. And it’s five years later, and I love my body. I don’t always love the way it looks or the way it moves, but I love my body, I love the vessel that it is and how it brings me closer to the values of connection and relationship and bringing good to the world.” (26:13) “Grief is sort of like a tidal wave. If you resist it, it persists. It pulls you deeper and deeper. As opposed to if you just ride out with it, eventually, it puts you back onshore. Because that is what emotions do, we don’t stay in one place forever.” (31:50) “I am going to honor my body, and this is how I am going to choose to love myself this holiday season.” (37:05)   Links Join the Tune In Membership Here  Body Grievers Group Coaching  Body Image Supervision Cohort Follow Body Image With Bri on Instagram Unpacking the Knapsack of Privilege Article Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Dr. Calvin Moore was recently named Interim CEO of the Council for Professional Recognition. He joins the show to talk about what first attending the Head Start Program as a student meant to him as he moved up the ranks into executive positions. He and Kris also discuss why obtaining a CDA (Child Development Associate) certification is so important, and how we attract and retain a more diverse workforce.   Key Takeaways: [10:15] Dr. Calvin Moore was recently named interim CEO of the Council for Professional Recognition. He’s also the first CEO of the Council to hold its early education credential, the CDA. Previously, he was the regional program manager for the Office of Head Start in Atlanta within the Administration for Children and Families for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. [13:29] Calvin started his journey with Head Start as a child in 1969 and began working for the program in 1991. He worked his way up as a teacher, center manager, coordinator, and eventually Executive Director. [15:19] Calvin and his wife love living in Alabama, and they have a very busy household with both a 19- and 10-year-old. [19:31] It is the 45th Anniversary of the CDA credential. While they were affected by the pandemic, they are rebuilding and seeing a strong interest from teachers for community and keeping their skills sharp. They also have seen double the numbers of CDA renewals and an extremely large turnout at their Leadership and Learning Series. [26:49] Calvin believes in equitable systems in the way that every community should get access to a Head Start program, no matter what socioeconomic bracket they fall in. [30:28] Consistency is a big part of Head Start, and consistent messaging is something we need more than ever. [31:50] Calvin’s book, Men Do Stay, discusses myths of male teachers in the early childhood field and ways that we can do a better job of retaining our talented future male leaders and life changers. He gives his own example of how male leadership at a school helped other male teachers feel more welcome, and why continued professional development is so important. [36:02] Look back at your program and see if you market in a way that supports diversity. We can do better than the 2–3% statistic of males in ECE now. [41:11] Calvin did four years in the Air Force, which gives him a different perspective than most. [49:11] There are so many benefits to getting a CDA, a few of the key ones being a place for new professionals to feel oriented and welcomed in the industry.   Quotes: “People were looking for ways to connect in this crisis, and we were glad to provide them with an outlet, information, and skill set.” — Calvin “No matter what your budget is, you should not spend an inordinate amount for child care.” — Calvin “Let’s get every child care professional a CDA. It will allow us to have a base level of confidence in the ECE field.” — Calvin “I really believe the CDA catapulted me into life-long learning about child development that I might not have discovered otherwise.” — Calvin   Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray The Child Care Success Company Child Care Success Academy Child Care Success Summit — offering $1 ticket Grow Your Center Child Care Authority Child Care Exchange The Culture Code calvinm@cdacouncil.org CDA Council Men Do Stay

Steve is focused on the creation and scaling of positive workplace culture as a sustainable competitive advantage for achieving superior business results.   Why Culture is a Strategic Advantage for Business As the Chief Culture Officer, Steve works to make his company’s culture one of its greatest assets. He sees an undeniable connection between the culture of a company and its success. Good workplace culture pays back in so many ways. It attracts the best and most enthusiastic talent. When a company has a positive culture, employees are easier to attract, maintain high levels of engagement, and create a competitive advantage.   Putting Your Values Into Action Stating your values isn’t enough. You need to take deliberate action to ensure that your stated values prosper within your company. You have to hire and fire according to your values. When managing your employees, put the language of your workplace culture front and center. Ultimately, training in accordance with your values ensures that everyone knows how to do their best work in alignment with the company’s vision. When your workplace culture is able to do this, your people will become strong advocates of your values. This naturally leads to a strengthening of these values into something larger than the founders could have done on their own.   In This Episode The role and value of Chief Culture Officers [0:50] Signs that your culture is working [7:23] The attributes of a positive culture [9:18] Intentionally setting up company values to be acted upon [13:08] The dangers of not operating according to your stated values [20:08] How founders impart their personal values to their company [21:50 How workplace culture can evolve for the better as a company scales up [27:07] The power of strong workplace culture to respond to crisis [28:56] Practical steps to creating an inclusive work environment [33:33]   Quotes “People don’t realize that businesses invest in culture because culture improves the business.” [1:56] “With culture, not only do you have to speak the language, you have to do the language. You have to do things that are in accordance with your values.” [21:07] “A crisis is a horrible time to find out what your values are as a company. It’s a great time to have your values as a company.” [30:06] “One of the goals to enable the success of the business has to be letting my people do their best work. Every single day I should be pushing to get every employee that can into that state of flow.” [36:30]   Key Takeaways 1. Having a clear company vision will lead to a more engaged and motivated workforce. 2.
