Fire is a means of control and has been deployed or constrained to levy power over individuals, societies, and ecologies. In Burn Scars: A Documentary History of Fire Suppression, from Colonial Origins to the Resurgence of Cultural Burning (Oregon State UP, 2024), Pomona College professor Char Miller has edited a collection of documents and essays tracing the history of fire and human interactions in the West and across North America. Indigenous people in California and elsewhere used fire for their own benefit, allowing naturally occurring wildfires to replenish landscapes, and controlling "light burns" to better suit their own hunting, gathering, and agricultural means. It was only with the arrival of first the Spanish and then other European and American settlers that fire took on a decidedly "uncivilized" connotation. As Americans instituted fire regimes across the continent, wildfires grew larger and forests unhealthier. It's only been in recent years that Native people, using traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and settler forest science have begun to combine as a means of restoring fires as a central component of forest health. The Skill Swap Side Hustle – Earn Money by Connecting People (Without Going Online) In this episode of Join Up Dots, we explore a brilliantly simple and refreshingly offline side hustle idea that's built entirely on human connection. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the digital noise of online platforms like Etsy, eBay, or social media algorithms, this episode offers you a breath of fresh air—and a genuine business opportunity that starts right on your doorstep. The Skill Swap Side Hustle is all about harnessing the value that already exists within your local community. It's about connecting people who have something to teach with those who are eager to learn, and positioning yourself right in the middle of that exchange. Think of it as becoming a local connector—someone who knows who teaches guitar, who wants to learn how to knit, or who needs help speaking Spanish for an upcoming trip. Every connection you make becomes an opportunity for income, value, and community building. The inspiration for this hustle comes from a real-life moment: a retired woman sharing her photography skills with a teenager in a quiet café. No app. No advertising. Just a few coins exchanged for knowledge and a shared experience. That simple moment sparked the realisation that there are countless people with skills they'd be happy to share—if only someone brought them together. That “someone” could be you. Throughout the episode, we dive into how this works practically. From retired bakers teaching sourdough to curious home cooks, teenagers trading guitar lessons for Spanish tutoring, or community members meeting for a “Speed Skill Swap” evening—this idea flourishes through the everyday connections all around us. You don't need a website or a storefront. You just need ears, eyes, and a willingness to bring people together. You can charge a small fee per introduction, run local events, or build a simple subscription-based network for your area. People trust human introductions far more than online ads or anonymous listings, and that's what makes this side hustle not just powerful, but sustainable. You become known as the go-to person for unlocking hidden talents and making learning accessible and personal. What makes this hustle even more exciting is its low barrier to entry. There's no need for investment in inventory or tech. All it takes is starting conversations, taking notes, and matching people up. As you grow, so do the opportunities—running workshops, expanding to nearby towns, and even partnering with schools, councils, or community organisations. The episode explores the deeper human truth behind the hustle: people want connection. Many feel isolated, overlooked, or unused, despite having decades of experience or unique knowledge. Others want to learn and grow but don't know where to turn. This model bridges that gap. It empowers both the teachers and the learners—and it pays you to make that happen. Of course, we tackle the most common objections too. Why would people pay for this? Because they're tired of looking for help online and want a trusted, warm introduction. Isn't this just being a middleman? Absolutely. And in today's world, being a caring, present, human middleman is more powerful than ever. Is there enough demand? The demand for learning is endless—DIY, languages, crafts, cooking, tech, hobbies—and the skills already exist in our communities, waiting to be discovered. So, if you're looking for a business idea that's meaningful, rewarding, and easy to start, this episode is for you. It's perfect for those who enjoy people, like being helpful, and want to earn by creating value out of connection. It's also ideal for those wanting to escape the digital hustle in favour of something more personal and real. Listen in to discover how to start your own Skill Swap Side Hustle today. You'll walk away with a clear action plan, inspiration, and the tools to launch something impactful in just a few days. Whether it's organising one match or hosting a community event, the journey starts with a conversation—and that conversation could be life-changing. If this episode lights a fire in you, don't keep it to yourself. Share it with someone who thrives on helping others. Let's spread this movement of local connection and offline income. Use the hashtags #JoinUpDots #SkillSwapSideHustle #OfflineIncome #ConnectEarnGrow to tell the world about it. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review. Your feedback helps us reach more people and continue bringing you valuable content. See you in the next episode!

After the European football public had caught their breath following the first semi final, most assumed that the finale itself had the potential to be the best of all. Denmark were strong favourites to beat Spain - who were extremely fortunate to still be active in the competition - and set up a beautiful footballing conclusion to an enjoyable tournament. However, many Spanish players believed that luck was with them. Something that can take teams a long way in these things... Rob is with Martyn this week to explain Denmark's sudden rise to prominence, why so many neutrals took them to heart and how Spain broke those hearts in the end. 'Danish Dynamite', which Rob co-wrote with Mike Gibbons and Lars Eriksen is still available in the usual places. Davit Baghdasaryan, Co-Founder & CEO of Krisp, joins SlatorPod to talk about the platform's journey from a noise cancellation tool to a comprehensive voice productivity solution.Originally built to eliminate background noise during calls, Krisp has expanded into real-time accent conversion, speech translation, agent assistance, and note-taking — technologies being rapidly adopted in enterprise environments. The company's accent conversion is now deployed by tens of thousands of call center agents, significantly improving metrics like customer satisfaction and call handling time.Davit details Krisp's live AI speech translation feature which uses a multi-step pipeline of speech-to-text, text translation, and text-to-speech. The majority of use cases are in high-resource language pairs such as English, Spanish, French, and German, although Davit recognizes the importance of expanding to lower-resource languages. He shares how Krisp is also seeing increased demand in human-to-AI voice communication. AI voice agents are highly sensitive to background noise, which disrupts turn-taking and response accuracy. Krisp's noise isolation tech plays a foundational role in enabling smoother voice AI interactions, with billions of minutes processed monthly by major AI labs and startups. The CEO discusses LLMs' impact, noting how they enable advanced features like note-taking, call summaries, and real-time agent guidance. He sees Krisp as a platform combining proprietary technologies with third-party AI to serve both B2B and B2C markets.Davit advises startups to explore the vast and still underdeveloped voice AI landscape, noting the current era is ripe for innovation due to AI advancements. He highlights Krisp's roadmap priorities: expanding accent packs, refining voice translation, and building more AI Agent Assist tools focused on voice workflows.
With the podcast half-way through its tenth year it is a privilege to welcome back a former contributor to the show - read his piece on Clueless for The New Statesman that coincided with his previous appearance on the show - and long-time champion of The Cinematologists, Ryan Gilbey. Ryan's return is to promote and discuss his new book, the astoundingly good, It Used to be Witches: Under the Spell of Queer Cinema, published this month (June 2025) by Faber. Around the release date, I (Neil) sat down in Cinema 1 at the Barbican in London to discuss the book, the form(s) of Queer Cinema, Ryan's journey with his sexuality and how cinema is entwined and implicated, being a film obsessive, and the comfort of lists. It was a profound privilege to sit with an old friend to talk about his amazing work and this art form that we both love so much. Around this conversation, Dario and I discuss Queer representation and the cinema as a transgressive space, ownership and authorship of texts, and the way that the cinema space affects not only the viewing of a film but in this case, the experience of talking about film. Finally, we talk about the film End of the Century (Castro, 2019, Argentina) - I mistakenly describe it as a Spanish film in the episode, apologies - the film that accompanied my visit to the Barbican to see Ryan, and also the film that magically ends his transcendent and moving book. This episode of The Cinematologists is dedicated to Barney Gilbey. ——— Visit our Patreon at www.patreon.com/cinematologists ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. In this video, I dive into a pivotal moment for the Boston Celtics' future as the front office makes bold moves that could reshape the team's trajectory. I break down the Kristaps Porzingis trade and what his reported move to the Atlanta Hawks could signal for Boston's roster construction and financial flexibility.I then shift focus to Hugo Gonzalez, the Celtics' latest first-round draft pick. What does the young Spanish guard bring to the table, and how might he fit into Joe Mazzulla's system alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown? Is he a long-term piece or another draft-and-develop project? Finally, I analyze recent comments from President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens, who offered insight into the team's evolving philosophy, roster planning, and how the Celtics plan to remain title contenders in the post-championship era.Whether you're a Celtics diehard or just love NBA roster strategy, this breakdown has everything: cap space implications, developmental projections, and a look at how Boston is preparing for another deep playoff push.Like, comment, and subscribe if you're locked in on the Celtics' offseason moves. How does movement, across borders and social class, shape one's sense of belonging? A conversation with writers Tash Aw and Radna Fabias about social change, generational gaps and the legacy of colonialism. In his new book The South, Aw explores the radical political and societal changes that swept through Asia in the 1990s, as seen through the eyes of a Malaysian family. He delves into themes such as class, economic instability, and the search for (queer) identity. Aw captures the painful transformation of post-colonial societies, marked by the tension between tradition and modernity, and the conflict between personal desire and collective duty. How do cultural expectations shape the journey toward personal identity in a rapidly changing society?Tash Aw (1971) is a writer and essayist. He grew up in Malaysia, left for England in his teens to study law and is currently lives in Paris. Today's episode focuses on a recent article in JAMA Internal Medicine regarding maternal mental health in the United States. I'll explain and summarize the study and results, and discuss the most appropriate next steps. Since I'm presenting the information in summary form, please read the article for yourself by clicking the link in the Resources section for this episode. Show Highlights: The findings of this study are sobering and validating. Scope and value of research findings like this to “fill the gap” in maternal mental health The details of the study subjects: 198,000+ US mothers from 2016-2023 who self-reported their physical and mental health The key findings: The percentage of mothers reporting a rating of “excellent” mental health dropped dramatically during the time frame, the percentage reporting “fair” or “poor” mental health increased, and the trend of declining maternal mental health crosses through all socio-economic groups. The key factors contributing to maternal mental health conditions Results of the study show that we need more investment into the underlying causes of mental health decline, especially for lower socio-economic status moms. Moms are suffering under the weight of silence, stigma, shame, and societal expectations. Studies like this one are vital to break down barriers to care and support. Learning to identify your needs, choose rest when needed, and prioritize self-compassion What we can do to help: offer screenings at multiple points, effect policy change, and find positive ways to support the entire family system. After the success of our bilingual season about the first female doctor trained in the Dominican Republic, The Extraordinary Life and Tragic Death of Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo, we are adapting more of our episodes in Spanish. Starting next week, listen out for the stories of astronomer Annie Maunder, physicists Emma Unson Rotor and Carolyn Parker, and chemist and forensic scientist Mary Louisa Willard in Spanish and English. As we always say, for every Marie Curie or Rosalind Franklin whose story has been told, hundreds of female scientists remain unknown to the public at large. So, we illuminate the lives and work of a diverse array of groundbreaking scientists who, because of time, place and gender, have gone largely unrecognized. And now these stories are available in Spanish too. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 374The Saint of the day is Blessed Raymond LullBlessed Raymond Lull's Story Raymond worked all his life to promote the missions and died a missionary to North Africa. Raymond was born at Palma on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea. He earned a position in the king's court there. One day a sermon inspired him to dedicate his life to working for the conversion of the Muslims in North Africa. He became a Secular Franciscan and founded a college where missionaries could learn the Arabic they would need in the missions. Retiring to solitude, he spent nine years as a hermit. During that time he wrote on all branches of knowledge, a work which earned him the title “Enlightened Doctor.” Raymond then made many trips through Europe to interest popes, kings, and princes in establishing special colleges to prepare future missionaries. He achieved his goal in 1311, when the Council of Vienne ordered the creation of chairs of Hebrew, Arabic, and Chaldean at the universities of Bologna, Oxford, Paris, and Salamanca. At the age of 79, Raymond went to North Africa in 1314 to be a missionary himself. An angry crowd of Muslims stoned him in the city of Bougie. Genoese merchants took him back to Mallorca, where he died. Raymond was beatified in 1514 and his liturgical feast is celebrated on June 30. Reflection Raymond worked most of his life to help spread the gospel. Indifference on the part of some Christian leaders and opposition in North Africa did not turn him from his goal. Three hundred years later Raymond's work began to have an influence in the Americas. When the Spanish began to spread the gospel in the New World, they set up missionary colleges to aid the work. Saint Junípero Serra belonged to such a college. Click here for quotes from Catholic saints! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Friends of the Rosary,The Catholic Church honors today St. Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975), a contemporary Spanish saint who founded Opus Dei and opened a new path of holiness by helping the faithful to sanctify themselves through performing ordinary work and daily duties with a Christian spirit.Pope John Paul II canonized the founder of Opus Dei in 2002. The Holy Father said, "St. Josemaría was chosen by the Lord to proclaim the universal call to holiness and to indicate that everyday life, its customary activities, are a path towards holiness. It could be said that he was the saint of the ordinary."Today, we are also invited to listen to and act on the words of Christ Jesus in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This way we will be like a wise man whose house is built on rock, avoiding that our entire life collapses.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New!
