Long Reads continues our recent focus on the politics of southern European countries over the last decade. This week and in our next episode, we're looking in detail at what's been happening in Spain. In contrast with Greece and Portugal, Spain still has a government today headed by the center left. The Spanish Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has attracted a lot of interest from the international media for appearing to buck the trend as many European countries shift to the right. He's been unusually outspoken on the subject of Gaza. And Sanchez was the only European leader to directly challenge Donald Trump over his demand for a big increase in military spending. Sanchez may be gaining admirers as well as enemies on the international stage. But his position at home is quite precarious. His governing coalition with the left-wing party Sumar doesn't have a majority in parliament. And some of his political allies have been accused of corruption. Over the next two episodes, Long Reads will concentrate on how Sanchez came to power, what his record in office has been, and whether his government is likely to endure. Eoghan Gilmartin is an Irish journalist based in Madrid. He's a regular contributor to Jacobin, and he co-hosts the Sobremesa podcast about Spanish politics. Find his recent articles, including “Spain Is Right to Reject Increased Military Spending,” on the Jacobin website: https://jacobin.com/2025/06/trump-nato-spain-military-sanchez Long Reads is a Jacobin podcast looking in-depth at political topics and thinkers, both contemporary and historical, with the magazine's longform writers. Hosted by features editor Daniel Finn. Produced by Conor Gillies with music by Knxwledge.
In this episode, Jason tackles a powerful listener question about tiered huddles and the real meaning of ownership in construction. He challenges one of the biggest myths in the industry, that you can “shed risk” without shedding responsibility and explains why this mindset is holding companies back from true Lean flow. You'll learn: Why “we're a country of lawyers” is more than a joke, it's a cultural barrier to teamwork. How to build a daily tiered-meeting system that actually drives results across projects. What the Japanese get right about afternoon huddles, make-ready planning, and Gemba leadership. How PMs and Supers can stay connected without burning out. Jason also drops updates on Elevate's global impact from Spanish, German, and Japanese translations to the free Takt Production System for Students course now available for universities. If you've ever felt stuck between accountability and overload, this one will re-wire how you lead your teams. Listen now and stop shedding what you were built to own. If you like the Elevate Construction podcast, please subscribe for free and you'll never miss an episode. Things got ugly again with a Padres manager. Mike Shildt delivered two stellar seasons, but left on an ugly note. Was health the reason for his exit, or was it simply a cover for a contentious clubhouse he needed to get out of? What do we make of this type of exit for the 'Grit Squad' and 'Winners Find Solutions' guy? Are we surprised, given the nature of his interactions with reporters? How much blame falls on the shoulders of A.J. Preller? Will they ever keep the peace for more than a couple seasons? And where do the Padres go from here? We have ideas.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1174: Gov. Newsom vetoes a dealer doc fee hike, Tesla unleashes “Mad Max” mode amid mounting scrutiny, and Home Depot opens free training lanes to fuel America's next generation of skilled pros.Show Notes with links:California dealers were ready for a long-overdue bump to their doc fee cap, but Gov. Gavin Newsom hit the veto button — just a week after tightening dealership disclosure rules with the new CARS Act.The proposed bill would've raised the $85 doc fee cap to 1% of the sale price, up to $260.Newsom said “no,” citing affordability for consumers in an already pricey state.Dealers argue new transparency rules in the CARS Act will increase their workload — not lighten it.The CNCDA's Brian Maas called out the contradiction, saying the new law “imposes substantial advertising and disclosure burdens on dealers.”Newsom fired back that dealers shouldn't charge “hundreds more for only minutes of data entry.”While under multiple investigations for its driver-assist tech, Tesla has decided to lean into chaos — literally — by reintroducing “Mad Max” mode in its latest Full Self-Driving (Supervised) update. The FSD v14.1.2 update lets cars drive faster and change lanes more aggressively than the previous “Hurry” mode. The feature revives Tesla's 2018 “Mad Max” driving style, which Elon Musk once described as ideal for navigating Los Angeles traffic.Early users have already reported cars rolling stop signs and speeding up to 15 mph over posted limits. This comes as NHTSA runs four separate probes into Tesla's FSD and the California DMV sues over its name.As the skilled labor gap keeps growing, The Home Depot is rolling up its sleeves with Path to Pro — a nationwide program offering free training and connections to jobs in construction and the trades.PathToPro.com lays out career paths and resources for anyone interested in the skilled trades. The free, on-demand Skills Program offers virtual training in English and Spanish — no cap on enrollment. The Path to Pro Network connects jobseekers with hiring Home Depot Pros, who can post and review candidates for free. It's designed for anyone 18+ who wants to learn, upskill, or transition into construction.“We aim to help build the next generation of trades professionals,” said Jenna Arca, Home Depot's Director of Workforce Development.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

In this powerful and emotional episode, Brenda K. Starr sits down to open up about her incredible journey from a young dreamer in NYC’s Upper West Side to a chart-topping singer who helped shape Latin pop and R&B. Raised by a single Puerto Rican mother of seven, Brenda shares how her entire family rallied behind her dream of stardom from acting at 12 to landing her first record deal at just 13. Brenda reveals the story behind introducing her then–backup singer Mariah Carey to industry exec Tommy Mottola, a move that would change music history forever and her own life’s path. After being dropped by her label to focus on Mariah and facing hard times, Brenda found herself working everyday jobs, on welfare and relying on pure hustle to feed her two kids, all without ever asking for help. Now, decades later, Brenda reflects on her resilience, her pride in creating a Spanish-language album despite not being fluent, and her continued passion for performing and releasing new music. Her story is one of perseverance, legacy, and pure heart. ❤️✨See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Part 1 of this series, we discussed how heavy and burdensome things can feel in the middle of the night when you are alone with your baby, struggling to function and feeling exhausted. In Part 2, we ventured into what it's like when anxiety and intrusive thoughts pop up in the middle of the night. Today's focus is on the importance of taking care of YOU, even in the middle of the night. You could feel “touched out” and overwhelmed, forgetting that you need self-care, too. You need to actively and intentionally have a plan. Let's explore this topic further! Show Highlights: Your options in the middle of the night may be limited. Think ahead and plan for water/snacks while taking care of the baby. Have them available nearby. Consider your personal comfort: blankets, socks, a sweater, or a small fan Plan for other options for music/noise besides doom-scrolling on your phone. After tending to the baby's needs, do some gentle stretches to help your neck, shoulders, and arms relax and release tension. “Are there small do-able things I can do to inject a little more self-care and attention into that hour or so in the middle of the night?” The magic in a slow, deep breath in and out to regulate your nervous system Feeling physically tired and “wired” at the same time Self-care is NOT selfish! Enlist your partner to help—before bedtime. (Dr. Kat shares tips about asking for help in the right way.) If you have that feeling of dread about the middle of the night, find one thing that brings you comfort and calm; add it into your middle-of-the-night practice. Consider using affirmations and meditation for grounding and self-compassion. Give yourself the same kindness that you would give to a friend. Although initial clinical trials of tamoxifen as a treatment of breast cancer were positive, Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) did not believe this market would be commercially viable. The company had hoped for a contraceptive pill – tamoxifen didn't work for that – not a cancer treatment. In 1972 the higher-ups at ICI decided to cancel the research. But Dora Richardson, the chemist who had originally synthesized the compound, and her boss, Arthur Walpole, were convinced they were on to something important, something that could save lives. They continued the research in secret. Tamoxifen was eventually launched in 1973 and went on to become a global success, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Dora Richardson's role in its development, however, was overshadowed by her a male colleague and all but forgotten. This Best Of episode first aired in October 2024 to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness month. It is now also available in a Spanish adaptation, narrated by Laura Gómez. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
Send us a textHave you ever noticed that some students struggle to see their progress in an acquisition-driven classroom? When your lessons focus on comprehensible input and communication, progress can feel invisible to students used to “right or wrong” answers. That's why Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) can be such a game-changer.In this episode, I talk with Dr. Claudia Fernández, one of the leading voices on TBLT, about how this approach helps students engage in authentic language use to achieve a real communicative goal. You'll hear strategies for bringing TBLT into your classroom while keeping language acquisition and connection at the heart of instruction.Key TakeawaysA task isn't just an activity. It has a clear communicative outcome that mirrors real-life language use.Authenticity builds motivation. Students feel successful because they accomplish something meaningful.TBLT aligns with CI. It naturally supports acquisition through input, interaction, and purpose. You can adapt it anywhere. From textbook classes to upper levels, TBLT fits any context. Why It MattersTask-Based Language Teaching bridges the gap between knowing about language and using language. It helps students experience the power of communication — not just as practice, but as a purpose.Recommended Resources for Teachers:Bill VanPatten – The Nature of Language and While We're on the TopicMartin East – Foundational Principles of Task-Based Language Teaching (Free online)Daniel O. As a child in the foothills of the Himalayas, Priyanka Kumar was entranced by forest-like orchards of diverse and luscious fruit—especially apples. These biodiverse orchards seemed worlds away from the cardboard apples that lined supermarket shelves in the United States. Yet on a small patch of woods near her home in Santa Fe, Kumar discovered a wild apple tree—and the seeds of an odyssey were planted. Could the taste of a feral apple offer a doorway to the wild? In The Light Between Apple Trees: Rediscovering the Wild Through a Beloved American Fruit, Kumar takes us on a dazzling and transformative journey to rediscover apples, unearthing a rich and complex history while illuminating how we can reimagine our relationship with nature.Apples are popular, but in our everyday lives we rarely encounter more than a handful of varieties: of the sixteen thousand apple varieties once celebrated in America, scarcely a fifth remain accessible. Kumar reveals the richness of a hidden world, bringing readers to the vibrant forests and orchards where historic trees still survive. These mature and wild orchards offer more than just fruit: they are havens for creatures from hummingbirds to bears and a living connection to generations past. She brilliantly weaves together science and childhood memories with the apple's storied history, from its roots in Kazakhstan to Spanish orchards in the Southwest and Thomas Jefferson's beloved Monticello fruitery. Kumar shows how—if we follow untamed paths—the tang and texture of an apple can lead us back to the wild. Our guest is: Priyanka Kumar, who is the author of Conversations with Birds, and The Light Between Apple Trees. Her essays appear in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Review of Books, Orion, and Sierra magazine. She holds an MFA, and has taught at the University of California Santa Cruz and the University of Southern California. Her feature documentary, The Song of the Little Road, is in the permanent collection of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and her awards include an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Award, a New Mexico/New Visions Governor's Award, an International Center for Jefferson Studies Fellowship, and an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Fellowship.
