When Americans tell the story of the Revolutionary War, the focus usually falls on Washington, Jefferson, and the battles fought in the thirteen colonies.  Yet independence was also won through foreign support. Some of it, in France's case, was quite overt.  Spain also supported the American cause, but its support was more covert.  At the center of it all was a Spanish commander whose campaigns crippled Britain and helped make victory at Yorktown possible. by Robert Riggs This episode is about the standoff with Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and the threat of its drone attack to the global economy. And I know what some of you may be wondering. What does Iran have to do with a true crime podcast? My answer is simple. For more than forty years, the Iranian regime has been linked to the killing of Americans, sometimes directly, sometimes through proxies, and often with little lasting consequence. This is not an abstract foreign policy debate for me. During my thirty years in television news, I saw the human cost of that shadow war up close.  I covered the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, where 241 American service members were killed in 1983.  Federal court records have described Hezbollah as the perpetrator and Iran as a source of political, financial, and operational support tied to the attack. I was an embedded reporter during the invasion of Iraq, where American troops faced roadside bombs and armor-piercing explosives supplied or supported by Iranian networks. In more than a dozen attacks, Iran has killed Americans without putting Iranian soldiers in the fight.  It used terror groups, militias, mines, missiles, and now drones.  When a regime uses proxies to kill Americans and destabilize the world, that is not merely geopolitics. It is state-sponsored crime. The world is focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow strip of water off Iran's coast where the global oil supply and American military power now face one of the most dangerous choke points on earth. Former Navy SEAL Team Six operator Rob O'Neill and Brigadier General Blaine Holt both argue that Charlie Kirk's death was not caused by a rifle bullet but by an explosion under his shirt—likely from a microphone pack—citing the way his shirt "puffed up" and the exit wound location inconsistent with a 30.06 round. On Saturday, a gunman fired shots at the Washington Hilton Hotel, which was hosting the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner. The Secret Service evacuated President Donald Trump and other senior leaders, and none of the guests were injured. One Secret Service officer was shot while engaging the suspect outside the ballroom, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously wounded. The gunman allegedly sent a manifesto to his family before the attack, suggesting that he intended to kill the president and other administration officials. Vaccine policy in the US is something of an ideological battleground. Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr is a vaccine sceptic, and since taking office he has attempted to remake US vaccine policy. In March a judge blocked his proposal to cut the number of jabs that are recommended for kids. At the same time, last year saw the worst measles outbreak in the US in decades. There were more than 2000 cases last year, and three people died. There have been more than 1500 cases so far in 2026. There's a lot going on, so it's possible the public's views on vaccination are shifting. A new poll published by online news site Politico added a big claim into the mix. According to the headline “more Americans doubt vaccine safety than trust it”. But is that what the survey actually found? Dr David Higgins, a paediatrician and public health assistant professor who writes a Substack called Community Immunity, explains why he believes the headline is misleading. Jimmy's guest, former CIA analyst Larry Johnson, argues that Trump is exhibiting "demonstrable signs of early dementia" based on his erratic behavior, including personal insults against Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, the Pope, and others, while ignoring that Iran already submitted a peace plan 14 days ago that Trump refuses to accept. The specter of Christian nationalism, and discussion of American Christianity more broadly, has risen to the cultural forefront in recent months. Hegseth and Wilson advocate for a Protestant vision of America in the halls of the military. The majority-Catholic Supreme Court receives both praise and criticism for its handling of religious freedom and gay rights cases. The Trump administration (which has several prominent Catholic members, including the vice president) and the Vatican's rocky relations famously came to a head just weeks ago when the president criticized the pope for opposing the war in Iran. And the rising star of Presbyterian seminarian and staunch progressive James Talarico in Texas has opened new conversations about Christian politics, including debates and divisions among other prominent Christians about how to receive him. In the background of all these recent examples is the ongoing debate about whether American Christianity is undergoing a revival — that is, whether a country that has long been on a decades-long shift away from Christianity is suddenly re-embracing faith.Our nation has a long tradition with Christianity. However, it also has a long tradition of keeping Christianity (or any religion) outside of our government. For a lot of Americans who believe in the principled separation of church and state, Christian nationalism has become a primary concern — particularly among secular or non-Christian Americans. The prominence of Christianity in U.S. politics, and in right-wing politics in particular, is intimidating. That's especially true when the precepts that underlie Christian political activity aren't well understood, and when a wide variety of people claim to be working from the same religious principles but disagree on fundamental issues like abortion and welfare and marriage and immigration. But not all Christian political activity is, in fact, Christian nationalism. Much of it is actually normal political activity, simply based on an underlying Christian worldview — no different from political activity that's based on a secular worldview, or a Muslim worldview, or a Jewish one.
