The enzyme converts the precursors in barley to free thiols that smell and taste like passionfruit and grapefruit. It's super clean. No off-flavors like burnt rubber or other sulfurous notes. Just tropical aromatics. You don't have to do anything unusual either, like mash hopping. Just pitch dry Tropics and supercharge your hazy IPA.All About BeerAt All About Beer, we're honored to share the stories that define the beer community, and we couldn't do it without the generous support of our underwriting sponsors. “I don't see any ceiling for non-alc beer.”It's fair to say there were plenty of skeptics when non-alcoholic beer first started to appear in earnest in the local beer scene. Yet, in the half-decade-plus since we ran a blind tasting featuring early entrants to the market, the sector has grown and grown. While some brands have come and gone, there's a growing number of established brands and many other breweries for whom their non-alc range forms a significant part of their sales. What's more, Bridge Road Brewers and, more recently, Heaps Normal have started putting non-alc beer on tap.To assess where the market sits, where it could be heading, and why it's come so far already, we pulled together a panel from different facets of the beer world.Molly Rose founder Nic Sandery is the brewer behind both Molly Rose and Hiatus non-alcs, Sam Bethune is a former brewer who's now a technical sales specialist at Bintani, and former Fixation main man Tom Delmont brings a sales and brand perspective from his role at Hop Nation, who produce a broad range of alcohol-free beers. We look at advances in technology, processes and ingredients, the dos and don'ts of non-alc brewing, take lessons from overseas, and attempt a spot of crystal ball-gazing.This week's opening is a global affair with James recently landed in London amid a European heatwave that looks a lot like Australia in January – albeit without aircon... We discuss two venue openings in the Yarra Valley and the Sunshine Coast, the relaunch of the Tasmanian Beer Trail, and our plans for a hiatus of sorts of our own.Throughout July, we'll still be reviewing the week in beer on the show, but instead of featuring new longform interviews we'll be running some of our favourites from the past two years. With James in the UK and our producer heading to the US soon – plus a major new project coming to a head – we didn't want to risk breaking ourselves any more than we already do!Start of segments: 0:00 – The Week On Crafty 16:21 – Price Screen & Digital 17:26 – Non-Alc Panel Part 1 39:08 – Industry Insights With American Canning Machines 40:15 – Non-Alc Panel Part 2To find out more about featuring on The Crafty Pint Podcast or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

After two decades in the brewhouse, Kristi Mathews Griner quit drinking and became, in her own words, an NA beer snob. She joins Jake, Brandy, and Jordan to argue that non-alcoholic beer has finally gotten good and to explain how brewers are achieving it with newer yeast strains, hotter mashes, and smaller batches.Kristi started waiting tables at Hops Grill & Brewery in Alexandria in 2002 and worked her way into the brewhouse, eventually leading brewing operations at Capital City and serving as technical brewer at Beltway, where she brewed contract batches for Grimm and others. Along the way, she watched the Virginia beer scene grow roughly fivefold before the boom collapsed back toward the brewpub model it started with. She's blunt about the haze craze. She was "very begrudging," she says, and still kind of is, though she'll happily praise a haze that earns its place. She's also full of stories, including the time Charlie Papazian tasted her Pilsner at Savor and nearly talked himself into moving to Leesburg to drink it all the time.MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODEGo Brewing (Naperville, IL) — "The Story" DIPA and their pilsnerSierra Nevada Trail PassAthletic BrewingOther Half "All-N-All"Wheatland Spring (Liberty Estate Ale, Consequent)Bottle Logic (Recursion IPA)Grimm Artisanal Ales;UPCOMING DCBEER EVENTS:Urban Garden Brewing grand opening on Juneteenth — DC's first Black woman-owned brewery, with a ribbon cutting around middayWomen's Brew Culture Club in July: a mahjong night at Lucky Danger and an event at Diamondback BrewingJuly beer share at Other Half on Sunday, July 1Thank you for tuning in! We're halfway through the year and it's time to celebrate...with beer! Of course it's beer. Like that was ever in question...sheesh. We start off with something local from Elmeleven. Known for their thick pastry sours, Elmeleven has been reinventing the brand by venturing into IPAs and stouts. We picked up Moons, an 11.5% ABV imperial stout. Made with peanut butter and chocolate capsules, this is big step in the right direction. Years ago, Stefan left a bottle of Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery Acadian Groove Maple Porter at Martin's as a loving gift. 10 years later, Martin decided it was time to open it. What should have maple, vanilla, coffee and chocolate has developed into something else entirely. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #porter #imperialstout

On this episode, you'll hear the remarkable story of Bass Pale Ale. This story begins at the dawn of the industrial age, and charts Bass's rise as one of the first global brewing brands. Over the course of two centuries, its pale ales evolved to meet the times, and today we know Bass as one of Britain's classic cask ales—a beer enjoying a current renaissance among the country's pubs. In many ways, in telling the story of Bass, we're recounting the history of brewing in Britain over the past two centuries: its technological and industrial rise, the collapse that befell the giants over the past generation, and, perhaps, an encouraging revival. You'll hear from Harry White, who started at Bass in the research and development department in 1977. He would become Director of Quality Assurance in 1989, and stayed with the company until 2007. Today he is the chairman of the National Brewery Heritage Trust in Burton Upon Trent. You'll also hear from Pete Brown, one of the most celebrated beer writers in the world and the author of over a dozen books, including his most recent, Tasting Notes – The Art and Science of Pairing Beer and Music. It's an amazing brewery and an amazing story, all befitting one of the world's most iconic beers.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This episode is sponsored by:RahrBSGThis episode of the One Iconic Beer podcast is supported by RahrBSG – trusted supplier to brewers, distillers, and beverage makers across North America. Spending some time with beer's raw ingredients is important. Finding out what is new, exciting, or how other brewers are utilizing them to create world class beer helps make the whole industry stronger and pints taste better. This month, we're taking a look at malt and speaking with two industry professionals who are intimately involved in the processing and promotion of grain.Andrea Stanley is the co-owner of Valley Malt, a craft malthouse in Western Massachusetts supplying craft brewers, distillers, and bakers with locally grown malts and grain. In 2009 Andrea read an article about local farms and bakeries in the fertile CT River Valley reviving the lost art of growing and processing local grains. As an avid supporter of local food, Andrea saw an opportunity to connect this emerging local grain growing with craft brewing. She reached out to a local vegetable grower in her hometown of Hadley and convinced him to plant 25 acres of barley as a crop rotation.Initially her goal was to prove that malt barley could be successfully cultivated in Massachusetts and malted into an ingredient that local breweries would want to use. In October 2010, Andrea shoveled the first 1-Ton batch of locally grown malt and has since worked with her husband, malting team, and the local farming community to build a supply chain in the Northeast that continues to grow, despite many challenges to overcome. In 2022 Valley Malt underwent a major expansion, adding 1 million pounds of grain cleaning and storage and the capacity to malt 1.5 millions pounds annually. Valley Malt now supports over 700 acres of grains annually in NY, VT, NH, MA, ME and CT with the plan to keep growing in the coming years by installing additional germination bins. On the larger-scale commercial side of malt, Zach Kelly the territory sales manager in Northern California for the Country Malt Group. After a career in the brewhouse - where he worked for companies like Russian River and Hen House, he now helps brewers make smart decisions when it comes to finding the right grain bill for their next brew. Passionate about lagers and west coast IPA, Zach shares insight on what's exciting, reliable and available. What if using less hops made beer more hoppy? In a series of trials one North Carolina brewery was able to prove, by using advanced hop products, thiol flavors could be boosted through efficient use of ingredients, rather than more-is-better. Better beer. Better efficiency. Lower cost. It's a whole new way to use hops. And consumers are enthusiastic not only of the flavors, but also the lower price of the beer!On this bonus episode, we are going to talk about thiolized flavor from advanced hop products. Host Don Tse talks with Hopsteiner and NoDa Brewing Company about how NoDa was able to use new products to achieve a unique flavor outcome.GuestsChad Henderson is one of the founding members of NoDa Brewing Company. He started as the head brewer and became Co-Owner in 2014 after the company's 3rd year anniversary. Chad's focus with NoDa Brewing Company has been to produce exciting and consistent beer varieties while also looking at increasing brewhouse and production efficiency. Chad's innovation and product utilization have contributed to multiple awards and increased sales as well as inserting new styles into the market without jeopardizing NoDa's current portfolio.Steve Bradt has enjoyed a long and rewarding career in craft brewing, beginning in 1989 at the newly opened Free State Brewing Co. in Lawrence, Kansas and now extending into the supply side as regional representative for Hopsteiner where a lifelong passion for hops gets a chance to grow in a new direction. Steve has established and maintained a strong relationship to the brewing community as brewer, beer judge, writer, and through service and leadership in the Brewers Association, Master Brewers Association of the Americas and Kansas Brewers Guild, as well as other organizations. This Episode is Sponsored by:HopsteinerThis episode is brought to you by Hopsteiner and Alora™ hops. With our proximity to Mexico, it's always nice to have a light malty beer on tap. Good with tacos or good after a hike along Mission Trails Good Pressure Amber is a perfect beer if you want some thing light and freshing that not just a fizzy yellow beer.
Once again we deep dive into Martin's cellar and find out if he's kept gold or held on for too long. Brekeriet released King's Goblet back in 2020. It's a strong ale aged in Rioja wine barrels for 9 months. It was never a huge hit. It averages a 3.53 overall rating on Untappd. Hopefully it hasn't fallen off. Mikkeller Brewing San Diego closed in 2022. Valknut also came out in 2020. This imperial stout originally had coffee, vanilla, pecans and was aged in maple barrels. No walnuts were used in the making of this beer. We had it back in 2020 and gave it a 4.5 rating. How does it hold up 6 years later? #beer #craftbeer #drinks #goldenale #barrelaged #imperialstout
