Points of discussion:Q1: Should a brewery consider rebranding when expanding into new markets or reaching beyond its local audience?Q2: Is a full rebrand typically more effective, or can a strategic refresh of the existing identity be enough?Q3: If a company has worked with the same designer for years and is thinking about a brand refresh, how can they evaluate whether that OG designer is still the right fit? And if not, how should they navigate that tricky transition?Q4: How do you determine when a system like Left Field's templated approach makes sense, versus something more customized and illustration-driven like NoDa's?Q5: You mentioned that a rebrand usually isn't the first move when sales are declining, but your Wachusett example seems to break that rule. Why was a full rebrand the right call in their case?Q6: A lot of the work you showed uses a clear design system or template. How do you think about that approach compared to creating more individualized packaging within the same portfolio?Q7: When refreshing a brand, do you find it more effective to start from scratch, or to build on the existing identity and evolve what's already there?-Learn more at: www.craftbeerrebranded.com / http://www.beyondbeerbook.com-Have a topic or question you'd like us to field on the show? Send us a textSome marketing campaigns leave you laughing for days—and reaching for your wallet—while others land with the grace of a broken shopping cart. In this episode, Mike and Blaine dive deep into one of the most misunderstood (and most powerful) tools in business: humor. We break down why the funniest ads stick in your brain, how laughter builds trust faster than any pitch deck, and when a joke becomes a branding disaster instead of a breakthrough. From iconic Super Bowl commercials to small-town ads that somehow went viral, we explore the psychology behind why comedy boosts engagement, improves recall, and can even drive explosive revenue when done right. We also share the risks: the jokes that miss the mark, the brands that misread the room, and the moments when “being funny” becomes “being forgotten.” Throughout the episode, Mike and Blaine share personal stories, business lessons, and a few questionable punchlines of their own—because sometimes the best way to understand humor in sales is to laugh through the mistakes.Whether you're crafting an ad, pitching a client, or just trying not to be boring on social media, this episode will show you how to use humor strategically, confidently, and profitably. Tune in for a fun, insightful look at how comedy can elevate your brand and turn casual attention into real results.
Social media is an important part of our lives. We wish people a happy birthday, find out about births or deaths, stay in touch with people, are entertained by hilarious videos and get our opinions out across to everyone (for better or worse). Breweries use social media as well, a sort of visual Yellow Pages to get out their vision, their beers and their events to the masses. But with an everchanging world and social media constantly changing its rules, how do breweries adapt and change? In this episode of the All About Beer podcast, we talk to three guests about how they handle trolls, creating content, and showcasing what their brewery does in a thoughtful way that stays true to their brand values. When I wrote my 2021 book, Modern British Beer, I made the very intentional decision to put Fyne Ales irreplaceable Blonde Ale, Jarl, right at the beginning. For me, it's a beer that merges two schools of thought: that it is a modern beer, hopped with Citra imported from the Pacific Northwest, showcasing a bold, citrus fruit character, but one that is also a 3.8% cask beer, and at the same time feels resolutely anchored to British brewing tradition. Jarl, though, is not simply a modern British beer—it is a modern Scottish beer. Honestly, there is perhaps no beer experience that is resolutely more Scottish than to enjoy a pint at its source in Glen Fyne. That was the inspiration for this particular discussion—an effort to take a closer look at what's happening in the contemporary world of Scottish brewing. FyneFest, conveniently, provided the perfect place to chew on this topic and indeed it features Fyne Ales' very own head brewer Sam Shrimpton. Also on the panel are two owners/brewers at two of Scotland's youngest breweries: Lucy Stevens of Closet Brewing in Edinburgh, and Harry Weskin of Dookit Brewing in Glasgow.Listening to this episode, you'll quickly realise that no one on the panel claims immediate Scottish heritage (although Harry is pretty damn close.) However, they are, each in their own way, vital to the local, independent beer community. It's great to find out that the spirit that bound businesses together during the last resurgence of small breweries still exists today—in fact I'd argue it probably wouldn't exist without it.Tune in to hear two of the best young Scottish breweries talk about what they do, while perhaps one of the finest contemporary breweries to exist north of the border provides balance and context to this conversation. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Get ‘Er Brewed. A perfect way to end a great week of NA beers from Athletic Brewing! With the holiday season it can be difficult to satisfy that "winter wamer" category with a Non-alcoholic option, but Athletic nails it with their Winter Wonder Winter Warmer!
2024 saw more brewery closings than openings. Uncertainty is growing around rising costs and tariffs. Production is down. Consumers are looking for more diverse offerings, including non-alcoholic. Industry associations are promising bright days ahead, while member breweries are not so sure.Tired promotions and liquid social posts aren't going to save craft. Throwing more resources and budget at the problem doesn't make it go away. Festivals and retail demos are drying up. At Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine®, we obviously spend a lot of time thinking about beer—talking to brewers and others in the industry, digging into the details of process, and writing about what we learn. Best of all, though, we get to drink beer—and, like it or not, the taste of every drop flashes through these weird brains that have spent an unhealthy amount of time focused on the liquid and everything that goes into making it. In short, we have thoughts. In this episode, contributing editor Kate Bernot, prolific author and longtime contributor Stan Hieronymus, and executive editor Joe Stange take off their reporter hats to talk through their favorite things they tasted all year, from around the world—going deeper into their Critics' Lists from the annual Best in Beer issue—inevitably sharing thoughts on where craft beer both could and should be heading. When Brian Grossman started working for the brewery his father co-founded he expected to be making beer right away. Instead he was put to work scrubbing out fermenters. Over the years at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. he has held a number of jobs in both the original Chico, California location and in the Mills River, North Carolina brewery. Today he goes by chief brewer and is increasingly becoming the public face of the venerable beer brand that just celebrated its 45th anniversary. Earlier today, shortly before the North Carolina brewery opened its doors to the public for pours of Celly Drippins, he sat down for a conversation about generations, responsibility, brewing and hops. The final episode before we start our holiday beer festivities. A friend of Martin's gave us three beers from Lithuanian. Volfas Engelman has over 340 beers listed on Untapped. This is part of their Alaus Laiskai or Beer Letters series. We got to try 100% Cryo Hops IPA, a 5.7% AVB IPA. Next up is Funky Lambic, a 5.5% AVB sour lambic style beer. Finally, we get Fig Stout Twist, a 4.6% ABV style stout. They call it a "special technology beer with fig flavor." It's a trip to a country that doesn't export beers. We were really happy to get to try them. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #ipa #lambic #stout
I've always said drinking beer for a good cause is the best reason to drink beer. Well Athletic Brewing takes that a step further, so I can drink beer for a good cause and have it be a little better for me because its non-alcoholic! Every year Athletic partners with Yakima Chief Hops and a armed services orginization to creat a beer that gives back to our military heroes. The beer is called Ready Front IPA and this years beer is second to none!
This week, it's a conversation with Betsy Lay of Lady Justice Brewing in Denver. We talk about the evolution of ESB including some thoughts on Sierra Nevada winning gold in that category at the World Beer Cup with Pale Ale. She also discusses brewing with intention, what it truly means to be a community hub, and how the Mile High City is changing – and staying the same- with its beer scene. Music and collabs are in the very blood of Athletic Brewing, so it was an easy partnership for Althetic and The Warpped Tour to collab on a Hoppy Pale Ale called Side Stage. Bright citrus flavors with a hint of citrus and tropical hop flavors all balanced with a clean finish will have you asking your self, "are you sure this is a NA beer?"

Coming down from San Diego Craft beer week it seemed like a good idea to take a break from beer. But, I didn't want to take a break from beer so I invited the crew from Athletic Brewing to showcase what they've been working on in Beer-amar! With 5 days of non-alcoholic beers to get into, Johnn, Chris and Chris started in easy with their Golden called Upside Dawn.

Having food options is a way to bring in new customers and to keep fans coming back. There are many ways a small brewery can approach a menu and this month we're talking with folks who have dedicated kitchens and robust food truck programs. First up, Tony Cordova of New York's Scale House Brewing. Cordova, the Head Brewer, talks about the evolution of the company, what goes into running a pizza program of note, and how the brewhouse and the kitchen work together to create a memorable customer experience. Then Jason Stengl of Colorado's Cannonball Creek shares insight into running a food truck program. When he and his partners started the brewery, they had come from a brewpub chain that did great business. They knew they wanted to focus on beer so opted against having a kitchen. Now they have a robust food truck program - at least one each day of the week they are open. He shares insight on how scheduling, managing, and working with those businesses has its own challenges. It's one of the most anticipated episodes of the year—our annual peek behind the scenes of the Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine™ Best in Beer issue, as editorial director Jamie Bogner and executive editor Joe Stange share perspectives on the beers we've named as our best 20 of 2025 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-20-beers-in-2025)—plus, they reveal the results of the annual Readers' Choice poll. Throughout the year, we taste thousands of beers submitted to the magazine for review; our blind-review panel narrows them down further, finding top scorers in various styles for each issue of the magazine; and finally, we convene for a final round of blind tasting to narrow it down to 20 standouts of great character and quality—beers that inevitably represent this moment in beer. In this episode, we pull back the curtain to share some of the thinking (and tasting) behind the decisions, and we run through your Readers' Choice picks for best beers of the year, best breweries, best beer cities, best beer bars, and more.
