Matt Frey spent seven years working as a therapist inside Rikers Island from 2011 to 2018, a job he never imagined taking growing up in the suburbs of New York. In this episode, Matt gives a rare inside look at day-to-day life at Rikers from the inmate perspective, breaking down what really happens in both General Population and Mental Observation housing. He shares firsthand experiences with extreme violence, inmate suicides, unprovoked attacks on staff, and the psychological toll of working inside one of America's most notorious jail systems. Matt also explains how inmates sometimes manipulate mental health services for protection or legal advantage, what it's like hearing confessions protected by confidentiality, and the surreal reality of assessing people just hours after seeing their alleged crimes on the news. Now running his own psychotherapy practice after leaving Rikers, Matt reflects on boundaries, trauma, and how working inside the jail changed him forever. _____________________________________________ #RikersIsland #PrisonStories #TrueCrimePodcast #JusticeSystem #PrisonLife #MentalHealthInPrison #LifeBehindBars #lockedin _____________________________________________ Thank you to AVA for sponsoring this episode: Take control of your credit today. Mike Schrand has spent more than 30 years at St. Louis Public Radio — and his story is a masterclass in curiosity, creativity, and community. In this episode of Mostly Superheroes, Mike joins Logan Janis for a wide-ranging conversation that moves from overnight jazz shifts and Morning Edition to songwriting, cult movies, and why St. Louis is “the world's largest small town.” We talk about the evolution of public radio, nonprofit journalism, and why live, local storytelling still matters in an on-demand world. Mike also opens up about his life as a musician — including his solo albums Late Bloomer and Things Have Changed — plus the role art plays in identity, family, and aging creatively. Along the way, we dig into movie history filmed right here in St. Louis (Escape from New York), James Gunn stories, NPR programming, and what it really means to serve a community through sound.

Andrew Gautreau grew up in a good family in Louisiana, but addiction took hold in his teenage years and quickly sent his life off the rails. After finishing trade school, he began getting arrested for drug offenses — yet somehow still landed a job as a prison guard, training for a month at Angola, one of the most notorious prisons in America. His time on the job lasted just six months before he quit right before being fired, all while being arrested twice for drug charges outside the prison. As his addiction spiraled further, Andrew ended up cycling through local jails and a correctional work facility, where he spent nearly two years behind bars. In this episode, he opens up about addiction, hypocrisy inside the justice system, life on both sides of the bars, and how he ultimately turned everything around and got sober. _____________________________________________ #PrisonStories #AddictionRecovery #CorruptPrisonGuard #LifeAfterPrison #TrueCrimePodcast #AngolaPrison #FormerInmate #redemptionstory _____________________________________________ Thank you to PRIZEPICKS & LUCY for sponsoring this episode: LUCY: Go to HTTP://LUCY.CO/IANBICK and use promo code IANBICK to get 20% off your first order. _____________________________________________ PRIZEPICKS: Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/IANBICK and use code IANBICK and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! _____________________________________________ Connect with Andrew Gautreau: https://tattedbadclothing.myshopify.com/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 From Addiction to Prison Guard: A Life on the Edge 01:00 Growing Up in Louisiana and Early Influences 08:00 Family Values, Childhood Trauma, and Identity 13:00 First Drugs, Addiction, and Losing Control 18:00 First Arrests, Criminal Charges, and Consequences 24:00 Escalation: Jail Time, Probation, and Repeat Mistakes 31:00 Becoming a Correctional Officer Against the Odds 36:00 Inside Angola Prison: Training, Reality, and Moral Conflict 42:00 Daily Life as a Prison Guard Behind the Walls 47:00 Drugs, Arrests, and Walking Away from the Job 52:00 Addiction Spirals: Crime, Chaos, and Self-Destruction 58:00 Rock Bottom: Overdoses, Homelessness, and Survival 01:03:00 Getting Sober and Rebuilding From Nothing 01:09:00 Life After Addiction: Giving Back and Helping Others 01:13:00 Lessons Learned, Redemption, and Final Reflections Learn more about your ad choices. Comparison doesn't just distract us; it crushes our soul. Scripture calls envy what it is; resentment that rots us from the inside out. Jesus invites us to a better way. Not looking around; but looking up. Not running their race; but the one set before us. Phoenix Bible Church is a church in the heart of the city of Phoenix, Arizona. We desire to engage culture, uphold truth and love people. In a world where life can be heavy and confusing, we want to cover the hard truths - with grace. This is difficulty and messy - and so are we - but the love of Jesus meets us in our mess. Our rhythm is to gather to worship on Sunday and then scatter during the week to love, live and lead together. We are imperfect people moved by the perfect love of Jesus. Come as you are. What if a craft could buy back your freedom? Sitting down at the Abilities Expo in Dallas, we meet Jamie Carlson, who turned the hardest parts of living with cerebral palsy into a bold, practical plan. She tells of years of painful surgeries and a tough shift to full-time wheelchair life. The grind was constant, the energy tax relentless. So she looked for a lever she could actually pull.Quilting became that lever. A cousin nudged her to sew, and the hum of a machine became both therapy and momentum. Jamie set up a 10-foot frame, shared her process on TikTok, and invited people across the country to send their quilt tops. Every stitch was a promise: you pay the quilting fee into a Hope Help Live fundraiser, and we get one step closer to a wheelchair-accessible van. Unlike one-off fundraisers, this platform stays open, recognizing that disability costs don't end—they evolve. The result is life-changing: a Chrysler Pacifica she can roll into without breaking down her chair, her body, or her day. We dig into the real barriers—housing that doesn't fit, vehicles that don't welcome, time lost to logistics—and the practical solutions that restore control. Along the way, we talk about the power of music and sports to anchor joy, from Chris Stapleton singalongs to game-day rituals that make hard weeks feel lighter. Jamie's message lands with force: don't give up. Find one small light, keep moving toward it, and let community amplify your effort. If this story moved you, share it with a friend who needs hope, hit follow so you never miss a conversation like this, and leave a review with the skill you'd use to change your world.

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2026 47:09

In this episode (#316) we focus on the critical role of proactive honesty in healing relationships impacted by addiction, betrayal, and trauma. Proactive honesty goes far beyond “not lying”—it means leading with truth rather than waiting to be confronted, asked the right question, or forced into disclosure. When honesty becomes reactive instead of proactive, trust erodes, emotional safety collapses, and partners lose the ability to make informed choices. We emphasize that honesty struggles are not limited to addicts; partners can also drift into dishonesty through self-silencing, conflict avoidance, or fear of toxic reactions. We examine the many reasons honesty breaks down, including fear of conflict, shame, habitual deception, emotional dysregulation, and attempts to manage or control others' perceptions. While these patterns may be understandable survival strategies, they are never harmless. Dishonesty—whether through outright lies, partial truths, minimization, or “everything's fine” responses—undermines accountability, intimacy, and recovery. We explain why clarity equals respect, why intent does not erase impact, and how avoiding the full truth often creates repeated betrayals rather than preventing harm. Finally, we outline what practicing proactive honesty actually looks like: catching dishonesty early, naming wrongs clearly, telling the whole truth, acknowledging impact without defensiveness, expressing accountability without shame, backing words with measurable actions, and allowing the other person's response without trying to control it. We also stress the importance of choosing appropriate environments for difficult conversations—without using that as an excuse to deceive. Proactive honesty is uncomfortable and challenging, but it is essential for rebuilding trust, restoring integrity, and creating relationships rooted in safety, authenticity, and real connection. For a full transcript of this podcast in article format, go to:   What Does "Proactive Honesty" in Your Daily Life & Relationships Look Like?Learn more about Mark and Steve's revolutionary online porn/sexual addiction recovery and betrayal trauma healing program at—daretoconnectnow.comFind out more about Steve Moore at:  Ascension CounselingLearn more about Mark Kastleman at:  Reclaim Counseling Services

Ever dreamed of exploring a region where lush green hills meet the Atlantic Ocean? Deborah, a proud native of Bayonne, takes us on a tour of her homeland. She shares the magic of Bayonne's famous festivals, the charm of Biarritz's beaches, and the hidden gems of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Deborah's insider tips make this episode a must-listen for anyone planning a trip—or just dreaming of one. But this isn't just a travel guide. Deborah also runs Feel Good French, where she helps adults learn French without the stress. If you've ever thought, "I'm too old to learn a new language," think again! Deborah breaks down her simple, effective methods for picking up French after 50. She talks about shadowing techniques, setting realistic goals, and embracing mistakes. Her approach is all about connection, not perfection—perfect for travelers who want to chat with locals, not ace a grammar test. Annie and Deborah dive into the Basque Country's rich history, from its mysterious language to its whaling traditions. They also discuss the best ways to explore the region, whether by bike along the Vélodyssée or on foot through picturesque villages like Espelette. And yes, there's food! Think fresh seafood, cured ham, and those famous Basque peppers. After the interview, Annie shares a surprise from her recent trip to Paris: the city's cycling boom. She describes the bustling bike lanes, cargo bikes zipping through the streets, and even bicycle traffic jams. It's a fascinating look at how Paris is changing—one pedal at a time. Together, they unpack the realities of nonmedical in-home senior care, how it integrates with hospitals, home health, and hospice, and why seemingly “small” daily tasks can dramatically impact health outcomes.Key Topics Covered in This Episode…Why nonmedical care matters: How help with activities of daily living—bathing, dressing, meals, transportation, and companionship—directly influences clinical outcomes and reduces hospital readmissions.Hospital-to-home transitions: The growing importance of in-home care as hospitals discharge patients earlier and rely on the home environment to support recovery.Caregiver burden and sustainability: Why family caregivers often reach a breaking point, and how professional in-home care allows loved ones to remain family—not full-time caregivers.Lance Summey is a franchise owner with Home Instead, the world's largest provider of nonmedical in-home senior care. He holds a Master's in Social Work from Baylor University and brings firsthand experience from both hospital systems and personal family caregiving. Motivated by his mother's battle with breast cancer and his grandmother's experience with multiple sclerosis, Summey has dedicated his career to bridging gaps in post-acute and long-term care—particularly where traditional medical models fall short. His work focuses on reducing hospital readmissions, integrating care teams, and supporting families through some of life's most challenging transitions.

I sit down with yet another Jeff, but this one took things to a different level. Over the course of October and November, he completed 122 laps of the Manitou Incline, nearly a mile and over 2,000 feet of gain per lap, turning one of the most brutal stair climbs in the country into a month-long experiment in mental resilience. What started as training for a future unsupported FKT evolved into something much bigger. A Navy veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he shares how his nervous system adapted to years in combat and why returning to everyday civilian life felt overwhelming. Loud environments, crowds, and constant inputs became difficult, while long, repetitive movement in nature helped turn the volume back down.We talk about why hiking and rucking can work where therapy and medication do not for some veterans, how mundane suffering and repetition create space for processing trauma, and why unsupported FKTs and long efforts with weight may be a wide-open niche for athletes with military backgrounds. He explains how the incline project became a fundraiser and awareness campaign for Warrior Expeditions, a veteran-led nonprofit that helps veterans heal through long-distance hiking. This conversation dives into combat stress, family life, fatherhood, endurance, mental health, and the simple power of left foot, right foot. It is a powerful reminder that the outdoors offers different things to different people, and sometimes the hardest, most boring path is the one that helps us heal the most.Check out Warrier Expeditions: https://warriorexpeditions.org/Follow Jeff Snyder: https://www.instagram.com/jsnydersoloadventures/Chapters00:00 The Manitou Incline Challenge05:10 Mental Resilience Through Hiking07:41 The Impact of Combat on Mental Health10:07 Nature as a Healing Tool13:01 The Role of Community in Recovery15:36 Fundraising for Warrior Expeditions17:58 Accidental Discoveries in Nature20:35 Transitioning from Rucking to Hiking23:15 The Importance of Mindset in Outdoor Challenges25:23 Unexpected Changes in Combat Situations28:01 Daily Life and the Incline Challenge30:31 Supporting Veterans Through Outdoor ActivitiesSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Eckhart talks about the importance of using our daily lives as spiritual practice which he calls presence power. Throughout the day, when we're not challenged by difficult people or circumstances, we should invite presence into our lives. Like a muscle that gets stronger with use, it will become part of our daily routine. Then when challenges arise, we don't fall into unconsciousness, we draw on our reserves. Conclude your week with the Weekly Anchor, a soothing, gentle practice designed not to judge, but to notice and celebrate. This session guides you to compassionately review the last seven days, using the lens of Stoic awareness and loving-kindness. We will practice glancing back to identify the moments when you successfully applied the techniques to notice what worked well for you and what you could do differently. I  Congratulations on completing another series! I honor you for taking part in this week's series! ALL ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SERIES Welcome to "The Path to Happiness with the Stoics." Welcome to a new journey on the Daily Meditation Podcast. This week, we are walking The Path to Happiness with the Stoics. When we think of "Stoicism," we often imagine a stiff upper lip or the suppression of emotion. But the ancient Stoics—thinkers like Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus—were actually in pursuit of profound joy. They didn't seek the fleeting happiness of a sugar rush or a new purchase; they sought Eudaimonia (flourishing) and Ataraxia (unshakable tranquility). This is day 7 of a 7-day meditation series, "The Path to Happiness with the Stoics," episodes 1164-1170. Prepare to shift your perspective. Happiness is not something you chase; it is something you practice. YOUR WEEKLY CHALLENGE: "The Control Test" This week, your challenge is to apply the "Control Test" to every moment of friction or anxiety you encounter. Whenever you feel stress rising, pause immediately and ask yourself: "Is this 100% within my control?" If the answer is no, practice visualizing yourself physically dropping the weight of that outcome, redirecting your energy solely toward your own attitude and response. Why are Aztecs often considered pessimists from a philosophical perspective? In episode 150 of Overthink, Ellie and David chat with philosopher Sebastian Purcell about his book The Outward Path: The Wisdom of the Aztecs. They discuss how the Aztecs urge us to take an “outside-in” approach to the self, how their understanding of happiness differs from much of Western philosophy, and how their view of the mind as inherently chaotic shapes their moral outlook. Why did the Aztecs think happiness was not an important goal? How can the Aztec notion of ‘right speech' help us gain control over the internal chaos of the mind? And why did the Aztecs reject the possibility of redemption? "Renting a Boat on the Canal du Midi with Bobbi Heath" is your ultimate guide to one of France's most magical slow travel experiences. In this episode, host Annie Sargent chats with Bobbi Heath, a passionate traveler and boating enthusiast, about her week-long adventure renting a boat on the Canal du Midi. If you've ever dreamed of cruising through France's picturesque countryside, sipping wine, and exploring historic villages—all without needing a boating license—this conversation is packed with practical tips and inspiration. Listen to this episode ad-free Bobbi and her friends started their journey in Homps, a quiet town near Carcassonne, where they rented a boat from Le Boat. No experience? No problem. The Canal du Midi is beginner-friendly, with easy-to-navigate locks and a relaxed pace. Bobbi shares how they mastered the locks (hint: going downstream first makes it easier!), where to find the best wine (hello, Minervois region!), and why this trip is perfect for groups of four. She even reveals her favorite stops, like Le Somail, home to a legendary bookstore (Le Trouve-Tout du Livre), and Carcassonne, where medieval charm meets modern dining at La Table d'Alais. You'll learn how to plan your route, what to pack (duffel bags, not suitcases!), and why early mornings at the locks mean shorter waits. Bobbi also dives into the joys of slow travel—biking along the towpath, shopping at local markets, and enjoying picnics on deck with fresh baguettes and cheese. The Canal du Midi isn't just a waterway; it's a journey through history, wine country, and some of France's most authentic villages. From practical advice on renting boats (expect to pay around $1,200/week) to insider tips on avoiding tourist crowds, this episode covers it all. Whether you're a wine lover, history buff, or just craving a unique getaway, Bobbi's stories will have you ready to book your own canal adventure. If you love France but want to escape the usual tourist spots, this boat trip is the perfect way to see the country at your own pace.
