In the conclusion to their Mike Nichols miniseries, Phil and Emily welcome Joe Reid (Vulture, This Had Oscar Buzz) to unpack Angels in America: Part Two Perestroika. The trio dives deep into how Nichols translated Tony Kushner's monumental stage play into one of HBO's most ambitious miniseries exploring its themes of prophecy, identity, queer resilience, and the intersection of politics and spirituality in 1980s America. They discuss the legacy of Angels as both a masterpiece of television and a cultural turning point for the medium itself, its sweeping performances from Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, and Mary-Louise Parker, and how Nichols closed out his career redefining prestige TV.This episode caps a thoughtful look back at Nichols' 2000s work, from Wit to Angels in America, examining how he brought cinematic intimacy to television storytelling. Gunslinging, gold-panning, stagecoach robbing, whiskey guzzling – the myth and infamy of the American West is synonymous with its most famous town: Deadwood, South Dakota. The storied mining town sprang up in early 1876 and came raining down in ashes only three years later, destined to become food for the imagination and a nostalgic landmark that now brings in more than two and a half million visitors each year. Once described as “the most diabolical town on earth,” Deadwood was not merely a place where outlaws lurked, like Tombstone or Dodge City, but was itself an outlaw enterprise, not part of any U.S. territory or subject to U.S. laws or governance. This gave rise to the Western outlaw behavior Deadwood is known for, but it also bred a self-reliance and a spirit of cooperation unique on the frontier, and made it an exceptionally welcoming place for Americans traditionally excluded from mainstream society. Today’s guest is Peter Cozzens, author of “Deadwood: Gold, Guns, and Greed in the American West. We look at the town’s complex story in full (including the stories of some of the most famous names of Deadwood — Calamity Jane, Hickok, Bullock, and Swearingen — who were made popular by David Milch’s HBO series). One frontier town came to embody the best and worst of the West—a relic of humanity’s eternal quest to create order from chaos, a greater good from individual greed, and security from violence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NXIVM is back in the headlines after Allison Mack's new podcast — but for survivors like Sarah Edmondson, the story never ended. She was one of the faces of The Vow on HBO — the woman who blew the whistle on NXIVM's “self-help” empire that turned into a full-blown notorious cult. This episode is about what happened after the escape: healing from coercive control, rebuilding trust, and learning to believe your own voice again.Sarah opens up about the psychological hangover of leaving NXIVM — how fear, shame, and identity unravel once the system is gone.We unpack what freedom looks like after indoctrination, how cultish behavior shows up in everyday systems, and the slow process of learning safety again. It's a conversation about resilience, humor, and the long road back to self-trust.If you haven't heard Part 1 yet, here you go! https://podcast.allisonhare.com/post/274What You Will Learn:How Sarah Edmondson escaped the NXIVM cult and what freedom really looked likeThe psychology of coercive control and how to spot it earlyWhy rebuilding trust is the hardest part after leaving a cultHow cult dynamics show up in modern coaching and wellness spacesHow to protect your agency without losing your sense of belongingResources MentionedPodcast: A Little Bit Culty hosted by Sarah Edmondson & Nippy AmesPre-Order new book: A Little Bit CultyThe Vow (HBO docuseries)Scarred by Sarah Edmondson (book)Sarah Edmondson's website – sarahedmondson.comNotable Quotables (from Sarah Edmondson)“I see a woman who's trying to right a wrong.” (02:20)“When you're in a cult, you don't think you're in a cult.” (13:34)“Black-and-white thinking is culty thinking.” (11:58)“Freedom isn't a moment. In this fascinating episode, Elisabeth speaks with Jo Katsaras, a world-renowned Costume Designer whose visionary work has graced some of Hollywood's beloved films and series.Born in Cyprus, Jo moved to South Africa at the age of five — a cultural fusion that would later define her unique artistic style. Growing up in vibrant 1970s Johannesburg, Jo's creative journey began early. She spent her childhood summers in Cyprus, cutting fabric scraps from her aunt's sewing projects to make dresses for her dolls. By the time she was a teenager, she was already cutting patterns around her friends, driven by an instinctive flair for design. After studying at the National School of Arts in Johannesburg, Jo briefly considered architecture but decided instead to explore the world, a decision that ultimately shaped her creative destiny. At her father's insistence, she pursued a qualification in fashion, completing a three-year diploma in just one year thanks to her extraordinary talent.Jo's career began in the fashion industry as a Senior Designer, but her passion for storytelling through clothing soon drew her to the world of film. Her debut as a Costume Designer came with the South African box office hit There's a Zulu on My Stoep (Yankee Zulu internationally), and from there, her rise was nothing short of meteoric. She went on to design for acclaimed international productions including:
Miles Ekhardt is making his mark in Hollywood with his role in HBO's supernatural horror series, "IT: Welcome to Derry." Miles stars as Matty, a young runaway who flees his small-town cinema only to be picked up by a Portland-bound family of four, soon realizing that something far more sinister lurks beneath the surface. A prequel to the blockbuster It films of 2017 and 2019, the series expands on Stephen King's iconic 1986 novel, diving deep into the origins of the terrifying Pennywise the Clown (reprised by Bill Skarsgård). Created by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, "IT: Welcome to Derry" weaves together history, the supernatural, and psychological terror into a chilling exploration of fear and community. To prepare for "IT: Welcome to Derry," Miles worked closely with his acting coach to explore the emotional layers of Matty, bringing authenticity and depth to the role. Welcome to Episode 400!! Dave Hill is a comedian, writer, musician, actor, radio host, and man-about-town originally from Cleveland, Ohio but now living in New York City in a totally sweet apartment with a party deck and everything. Hot chicks come over to hang out and eat cheese plates and stuff with him all the time and it's awesome. Anyway, on the show business front, Dave has appeared on Netflix's The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks with You Amazon's The Tick, Peacock TV's Girls5Eva, Comedy Central's @midnight and Inside Amy Schumer programs, TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show, and TruTV's Comedy Knockout among a bunch of others. He is a frequent on-air host for HBO and Cinemax and has been on channels like MTV, VH1, BBC-America, and the Sundance Channel a whole bunch too. Dave also starred in his own television program The King of Miami on the Mojo Network, which was cancelled even though Dave really liked it. The show also aired in the United Kingdom on Sky TV's Film24 Channel. And you can still watch The King of Miami on Hulu too, which Dave is super pumped about. Oh, and Dave was a correspondent on Hoppus on Music starring Blink 182's Mark Hoppus on the Fuse channel, which ruled. Dave has been on other shows and in obscure movies too but let's keep moving for now. Dave performs live comedy over the world and has appeared at such festivals as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Sasquatch Festival, Bumbershoot, Bonnaroo, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Crap Comedy Festival in Oslo, Outside Lands in San Francisco, and then some other ones too. He has also performed comedy at Sing Sing Correctional Facility twice and even ripped some guitar solos inside a Mexican prison a couple times too. In 2007, Variety magazine named Dave one of their “10 Comedians to Watch,” something he still won't shut up about. Some things are hard to let go of. Dave hosted his own radio show The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU in Jersey City, New Jersey every Monday night from 9pm to midnight for years and now hosts the podcast Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident, which is also broadcast on the UK's Fubar Radio, So...You're Canadian with Dave Hill, and History Fluffer, on which he is joined by Jim Biederman, Jodi Lennon, and Chris Gersbeck. Dave is also a frequent contributor to public radio's Live from Here with Chris Thile and This American Life. He has also appeared on podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla Show, The Nerdist, and then roughly 78 other ones besides those. Dave is the author of four books, including his brand new book The Awesome Game: One Man's Incredible, Globe-Crushing Hockey Odyssey, in addition to Parking the Moose (Doubleday Canada/Penguin Random House 2019), Tasteful Nudes (St. Martins Press, 2012) and Dave Hill Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Blue Rider Press 2016). He has also written for the New York Times, GQ, Salon, The Paris Review, McSweeney's, New York Observer, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, VICE, Guitar World, and a bunch of other places too. Comedy legend Dick Cavett called Dave “a major figure among American comic writers, past and present,” which is pretty much the coolest thing that has ever happened as far as Dave is concerned. Dave is also a musician who currently sings and plays guitar in the power pop band Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song to HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and the psych/garage rock band Painted Doll. He was also a member of Cleveland rock bands Sons of Elvis and Cobra Verde as well as Diamondsnake, a heavy metal band with Moby. Additionally, Dave has played guitar for Walter Schreifels and muscle metal band Thor and bass for Lucy Wainwright Roche and former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley. He also contributed musical scores to films such as Dirty Deeds,
In this unforgettable episode of Club Random, Bill Maher sits down with Cheryl Hines for a funny and unpredictable chat about politics, marriage, sex, science, and self-awareness. Cheryl opens up about life with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — from their late-night TV habits to living under scrutiny in a world gone click-crazy. They trade sharp takes on pandemic policy, natural immunity, Big Pharma, and D.C. politics, before veering into lighter territory with Bill's dislike of red, Cheryl's leather pants, Priscilla Presley hair, and that persistent “sock” rumor. This week, Da7e and Neil return to Derry for shifting timelines, airborne shinings, and midnight bike rides as HBO's It series continues. In The Calm [04:48], they discuss the show's potential three season plan, unpack some questionable polygons, and show appreciation for the loser who writes romantic poems inside his shoes. Then in The Storm [01:02:20], Da7e explains his theory for what's really going on inside Juniper Hill and highlights what we can learn from the upcoming episode descriptions. Then Neil drops his theory for how this show might be building toward a mid-season "HBO moment." Roxy Striar, Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to Episode 3 (“Now You See It”) of IT: Welcome to Derry, the chilling next chapter of the HBO prequel series directed by Andy Muschietti and developed by Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. Set in 1962 in the eerie town of Derry, Maine, this episode plunges deeper into the roots of horror and the rising terror that would become the cycle of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The cast includes Bill Skarsgård (Barbarian, Hemlock Grove) reprising Pennywise, Taylour Paige (The Toxic Avenger, Pussy Island) as Charlotte Hanlon, Jovan Adepo (Babylon, Creed II) as Leroy Hanlon, Chris Chalk (Perry Mason, Gotham) as Dick Hallorann, and Stephen Rider (Top Gun: Maverick) as Hank Grogan. Episode 3 is expected to reveal more about the terrifying engine of fear in Derry — with the trailer hinting at shocking connections such as a prison reference to Shawshank and a deeper dive into “Operation Precept.” With unsettling visuals, rising dread, and the town's façade beginning to crack, this installment raises the stakes significantly for Derry's next generation of victims and survivors — and sets the stage for the looming return of Pennywise in full force. We're recapping Episodes 1 & 2 of Welcome To Derry, a show that proves Stephen King will never run out of nightmare fuel. In this episode, Jason and Rachel break down the pacifier trauma, the demon-baby joyride, the womb-from-hell sequence, the pickle-factory disaster, the theater bloodbath, and the government bros who genuinely think they can team-up with Pennywise like he's the sixth Avenger. Thankfully, Hazel drops in to provide the emotional support HBO clearly refuses to. If you love horror, chaos, or watching Derry do Derry things, this one's for you. Then he'd go. And he'd come back with dinner." - Marlon WayansMarlon Wayans grew up watching his father combine faith with relentless action. Every single morning started the same way: Bible study, prayer, then that moment of looking up at God before figuring out how to feed 10 kids that day. His mother taught him something equally powerful but different: how to find joy in poverty, how to stay vulnerable when disappointments could easily make you bitter, how to love hard even when life is brutal. These weren't abstract lessons. They were daily survival skills that shaped everything about how Marlon approaches his work now. When Hollywood tells him to wait, when networks say they're booked until 2026, he hears his father's voice: don't wait for anyone to tell you you're ready. That mindset led him to self-fund his own comedy specials, film them on his terms, then license them to HBO and Amazon while keeping ownership. He's the guy who works three extra hours with his acting coach after a 14-hour shooting day because he refuses to show up unprepared. He drops a new hour of standup material every year, writing it live on stage while audiences think they're just watching a show. Most people fixate on what their parents did wrong. Marlon studied what they did right. That shift, that choice to extract wisdom instead of resentment from his upbringing, unlocked something fierce in him. His father taught him God and grit belong together. His mother taught him that joy is a choice you make, not a circumstance you wait for. Now he lives by a simple truth: everything is God, every closed door is redirection, and a thousand new doors are already open if you stop staring at the one that shut.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka’s last meal, and the reason why she sometimes carries cooked scallops in her bag, trace back to her unstable, unpredictable childhood. She talks about being kidnapped by her grandmother and why a gluten-free spaghetti dinner brings her comfort, even as someone who doesn’t have a gluten sensitivity. Atsuko’s first foray into entertainment was working at an ice cream chain that made employees sing and dance for tips. Atsuko loved it, but host Rachel Belle interviews two other folks who had no idea they had to perform at their restaurant jobs, until they saw it happening on their first day. One at Chicago’s famous Wiener’s Circle and another at a now-defunct steak house chain. Atsuko is on tour now! You can also watch her standup specials on HBO and Hulu.
