Episode 57: Show Notes. Sometimes you just need to do some travel banter! And who better to do it with than TravelZork Travel's Michael Trager? In today's conversation, we discuss our recent travel experiences and dig into the nitty gritty of points, upgrades, flight paths, and so much more. To kick things off, we hear all about Michael's recent trip to Madrid and the benefits of American Airlines' ConciergeKey status, which Michael has access to thanks to his wife, Ellen! We also dive into Marriott points and benefits, including getting the fifth night free, the challenges of hotel hopping, and the importance of a positive arrival experience; especially if you have your family in tow. Finally, Michael tells us the essential details and updates for ZorkFest 2025, including the festival's four-star accommodation, their new miles and points labs, their epic foodie and beverage dining experience, the speakers they have lined up, and much more. Why Build a Breakaway Brand? With the current noise in the marketplace, gaining visibility is nearly impossible without standing out. A breakaway brand redefines the market and creates emotional connections, not just transactions. Think brands like Apple, Nike, Volkswagen, JetBlue, and Starbucks. They don't just have enthusiastic customers—they have devoted fans. If your brand can't build this connection, you'll often find yourself competing solely on price.Key Strategies for Breakaway BrandingBe Driven by Purpose, Not ProductGreat brands lead with 'why,' not 'what.' They inspire customers with a larger vision. Take Patagonia, for example; it's not just about clothing but environment and activism. Define your 'why,' make it visible, and let it drive your brand.Focus on Experience Over ExposureVisibility isn't enough; memorable experiences build lasting value. Consider how unboxing an Apple product feels like an event. Audit your customer journey to ensure every interaction with your brand is memorable.Own a Distinctive Point of ViewBreakaway brands challenge industry norms. Consider Liquid Death, a brand with a rebellious voice for selling water. What industry belief can you challenge with your brand?Build a Consistent Brand CultureYour internal culture shapes your external reputation. Brands like Zappos, with their stellar customer service culture, show that a strong internal culture is crucial. Whether you have a big team or not, consistent brand culture is vital for scalability.Tell a Story People Want to JoinYour brand's story should invite customers to be part of a journey. Nike's “Just Do It” isn't just about shoes—it's about empowering individuals. Rewrite your brand story with your customers as the hero, like the Phoenix emblem I use in my business to symbolize evolution and potential.Building a breakaway brand requires a focus on purpose, experience, perspective, culture, and storytelling. Think about how you can differentiate yourself and eliminate your competition by embracing these strategies. Your brand is unique, and so is the mission that drives it. By cultivating a breakaway brand, you inspire not only your customers but also yourself and your team. Join me tomorrow as we continue our journey to empowerment with an episode from the Franklin Planner Podcast. I hope today's insights inspire you to elevate your branding game. Thanks for listening. I appreciate you joining us for this episode.George Wright III

State attorneys general (State AGs) are becoming increasingly active in the realm of antitrust enforcement, focusing on mergers, monopolization, and ESG-related cases. In recent years, state AGs have taken assertive roles in challenging major mergers, such as JetBlue's attempted acquisition of Spirit Airlines and Kroger's attempted acquisition of Albertsons. These actions highlight a trend of state AGs bringing their own cases in state courts, sometimes parallel to federal enforcement efforts. State AGs have also been at the forefront of monopolization cases, particularly against big tech companies, and have challenged algorithmic pricing and data sharing arrangements. Additionally, ESG-related antitrust actions have emerged, with red state AGs investigating financial institutions supporting environmentally conscious investing. In the latest episode of MoForecast, Morrison Foerster partners Carrie H. Cohen, global co-chair of the Investigations + White Collar Defense Group and State + Local Government Enforcement team, and Megan Gerking, partner in the firm's global Antitrust Law practice, discuss the current state of antitrust enforcement by state AGs and what to expect in 2025. They explore the potential for state AGs to continue active participation in merger and conduct investigations, possibly filling perceived gaps in federal enforcement under the new Trump administration. Listen to the episode to gain a deeper understanding of the future of state AG enforcement in the antitrust arena.

Max talks with Dr. Tony Kern about human error, airmanship, and the hidden threats pilots pose to themselves. Tony shares how his passion for understanding error began with the tragic loss of two of his former B-1 bomber students in 1992. The crash, attributed to "a failure of airmanship," prompted him to research the elusive meaning of that term—work that eventually led to his book Redefining Airmanship. Beyond medical transport, they assist military veterans by flying them to camps designed for rehabilitation, as well as special events like Major League Baseball games. They also provide commercial airline tickets, through partnerships with JetBlue and Southwest, as backup transportation. Tony emphasizes that even the best pilots are “one decision away from disaster” and discusses how errors often don't result in negative outcomes, which falsely reinforces bad habits. He introduces the concept of a “personal fingerprint of error” and advocates tracking errors—both in and out of the cockpit—to identify behavioral patterns. The conversation also touches on complacency, fatigue, and how inexperienced team members can sometimes better sense danger than veterans. He recalls the Thirtymile Fire as a case study in poor decision-making and leadership under stress. Tony concludes by stressing the instructor's responsibility not to pass along a faulty product, and encourages pilots to be relentless students of their own behavior. He also shares resources from his company, Convergent Performance, and his books, podcast, and LinkedIn newsletter. Max talks with Adam Broun of PALS SkyHope, a volunteer pilot organization that provides free air transportation for medical patients, veterans, and others in need. Founded in 2010 by three pilots in the Northeast, PALS SkyHope has conducted over 34,000 flights, serving more than 4,000 families. Beyond medical transport, they assist military veterans by flying them to camps designed for rehabilitation, as well as special events like Major League Baseball games. They also provide commercial airline tickets, through partnerships with JetBlue and Southwest, as backup transportation. Safety is a major focus, with pilots required to have at least 350 hours of PIC time and an instrument rating. PALS SkyHope provides risk assessment tools, town halls, and mentorship to support safe operations. Volunteer pilots primarily fly single-engine aircraft like Cirruses and Bonanzas, but some missions require larger planes due to the needs of passengers. The organization constantly seeks pilots, especially in the Eastern U.S., and relies on donations, marathons, and galas for funding. Adam emphasizes how volunteer flying gives pilots a meaningful reason to fly while making a real difference in people's lives, often significantly improving patient outcomes through faster, stress-free travel.
