 A wellness MLM does not announce itself as a cult. It arrives as a smoothie recipe, a flyer of smiling mothers, and a promise of working from home while you take your health back. My recent guest on Cults, Culture & Coercion, Brandie Hadfield, lived inside one for a decade. She is a Registered Psychotherapist  and co-founder of the peer support nonprofit Flipping the Pyramid, and she spent roughly ten years selling supplements for a wellness MLM before she understood she had been recruited into a commercial cult. Brandie was a new mother in 2011, isolated and exhausted, when the pitch found her. I invite you to notice how ordinary the entry point was, because the same machinery now drives coaching programs, prosperity preaching, and the speculative frenzy around cryptocurrency, which I consider a form of multi-level marketing. A small group sells the dream, recruits everyone else to buy in, and the people at the top profit while almost everyone below them loses money. Her recruitment began with a parenting book by a famous pediatrician and a home-based coaching certification. She paid for the courses, the workbooks, and the materials. Then a package arrived in the mail from the pediatrician's daughter, inviting her into the MLM the family sat near the top of. Brandie saw it later for what it was. A funnel. She is intelligent, devoted, and the kind of employee who gives more than anyone asks. Recruiters prize those traits. Her ADHD, undiagnosed at the time, sharpened her focus into something the group put to use. “My kind of tunnel vision and focus and tenacity, which can be a beautiful aspect of having ADHD, was really exploited,” she told me. Brandie was a mother with undiagnosed ADHD raising a son later identified as autistic. Isolation, a hunger for belonging, and a tendency to commit fully to a mission left her exposed. Her graduate research examined narcissistic leadership in commercial cults and its impact on neurodivergent people, and it filled a gap she had felt firsthand. She wants to help others now. The people best trained to recognize what NXIVM was doing were the people Keith Raniere reportedly made sure never got inside the organization. Licensed therapists were kept out. Kṛṣṇa likes it when we care about other peoples' consciousness and we take steps to help them. He says so in the Bhagavad-gītā; He says, "One who preaches the Bhagavad-gītā to others is the most dear to Me." And when we do it, we achieve a kind of realization that's not available when we just keep it to ourselves. There is a way in which, when we give mercy to others, we get a superior kind of realization that happens when we vicariously experience, again and again, souls reawakening by coming in contact with the Holy Name in written form, or by hearing the hari-nāma, or coming in contact with devotees. In previous yugas, when yajña was the means to please the Lord, it's mentioned that brāhmaṇas used to test their mantras. In fact, they would sacrifice an animal and then bring it back to life with the mantras; that way, they would know the efficacy of their mantras, and then it would give them superior faith in the mantras to be able to do the yajñas properly. In a similar way, when we go and give the mantras to other people—like down in Watford—people are wandering aimlessly down there for various reasons, their souls under the various modes of material nature. But when we take the trouble to go there and we meet them, and we give them the mahā-mantra and so forth—we test our own mantra. When we see it—see its potency and its effect on other people—then we get a superior realization of how powerful it is, rather than staying in an insular state. That's powerful too, but it's more powerful when we give it to others because then we see the effect. Isn't it the most valuable and enlivening of all perspectives to be in the hari-nāma saṅkīrtana and to watch people's reactions to it as they're walking by? I mean, I want front-row seats there! Any busy street in the world and just notice the effect that the Holy Name has—not just on people, but animals too—and watch the effect when they get touched by the mantra. Some people start dancing, some people run away as best they can, and some people pretend like it's not even happening. Even if it's a rip-roaring kīrtana, that can be the most fascinating of all because, you know they're in there, and you know they hear it, and still they try to ignore it. Then it gives us a perspective of our sojourn in the material world. Kṛṣṇa has been speaking to us this whole time, and He's always there within every atom, but we're ignoring Him. We can become circumspect and think about what is our sojourn. That all happens by outreach, by preaching to other people. Plus, as it's mentioned in the song about Lord Nityānanda, how He's a broker; He's selling the Holy Name. He started in a marketplace. This is MLM, in case you ever wanted to join multi-level marketing—you're already in it! This was the precursor to Amway, and Lord Nityānanda started that. It's mentioned by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura that you bring people to Lord Nityānanda and sign them up for the product, and you get your commission. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says—he said, "We'll all take the commission; we'll all take some." My story- I am a 44-year-old mom of 2 boys (ages 8&11) and wife to my wonderful husband for 14 years. We live in Lake Mary, FL (a suburb of Orlando). At the moment, I am a part-time Trainer at my gym. From 2022-2024, I had a podcast (Fast & Fabulous) & coached others to become Intermittent Fasters as well (still dabble in this from time to time)! Before having kids I was Paralegal for 15 years. I started yo-yo dieting around age 16. Since then, I have struggled with my weight. In college, instead of the “freshman 15”, I gained about 40lbs….When I graduated, I lost it by working out 7 days a week, calorie counting and depriving myself constantly. I didn't eat meat, carbs, or sugar, and honestly, I was miserable. Before having kids, I was a paralegal for 15 years. I maintained (not so effortlessly) a healthy weight for about 4 years until I got married at age 30. This is when the weight started to pile on. I finally found comfort in a man who loved me for me, the comfort of marriage set in, and before I knew it, I put on about 20lbs. Then I became pregnant with our first son in 2014 and gained a good 60lbs, lost it all rather quickly after giving birth but this time by joining a weight loss MLM (so embarrassed of this!) and using supplements and body wraps…hundreds of dollars a month to sustain, and I lost only around 10lbs over the next THREE years! Fast forward to 2016-17 – I was pregnant now with my second son. I was gaining just like the first time, but at 28 weeks, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Because I had to follow an extremely strict diet to control my blood sugar, I didn't end up gaining as much. It was what came in the next 2 years that was the worst. I tried to go back to work (I am NOT the stay-at-home type) when my youngest was 7 months old. It was an absolute disaster. My husband got a big promotion 9 months later, and I was forced to quit my job and stay home with an infant and a 3-year-old in a town we had just moved to. I fell into a horrible depression and developed a pretty nasty sugar addiction...you know the kind, when you're eating an entire bag of candy in hiding, trying to cover up the wrappers in the trash. I ate ultra-processed food constantly… fast food, cheeseburgers, and fries were at least a weekly occurrence. Over those 2 years, I gained another 25(ish) lbs. I am 5'3” and my highest weight was around 200lbs...although I'm not 100% as I never weighed myself.I remember weighing 191 at a doctor's appointment in January 2020 (right before I started fasting). So many health issues started piling up at this point...I lived at the doctor's office, but none could give me any answers....and not ONE mentioned weight loss, diet or lifestyle. I tried everything to lose this weight...I would lose 5-6lbs then it would come right back. This went on for a while before I accepted that this is who I was now and that I would be unhealthy and miserable. An old friend of mine had been telling me about IF for about a year at this point. I thought he was NUTS. How could anyone not eat for 16-20 hours?! I was someone who carried snacks in my purse long before I had kids because I was taught to keep your metabolism going, you should eat 6 times a day! Fast forward to January 2020...I'm getting my hair done and overhear the client next to me chatting about how she lost 30lbs doing IF. I went home that day and began researching.
