You might think you're doing intuitive eating, but if you're feeling frustrated, uncertain or stuck…there's a good chance that you're not actually doing it the way it's meant to be done. No shame in that, this is really common. In this episode, I'm going to walk you through 5 signs that tell us you're not doing intuitive eating correctly or in its entirety, and what you need to do differently to make it work for you. If you're: - Still calling food like chips and cookies junk - Letting the scale dictate your self esteem - Telling yourself that you're getting healthier by skipping carbs at lunch - Looking at old photos of yourself and comparing your current body and beating yourself up - Holding onto clothes from 10 years ago that no longer fit You say you want to be an intuitive eater, but you're not thinking or acting like one. And today we fix that. Becoming an intuitive eater isn't going to come from just declaring that you're "doing intuitive eating" or by simply committing to not dieting. The reality is that it takes more intentional work than that. Intuitive eating is a science-backed framework - but it only works if you do it the way it's intended. Episode Highlights - The 5 signs you're not actually doing intuitive eating like you think you are - Specific actions to focus on that will help you to truly listen to your hunger and fullness cues, and pump the brakes on impulsive or emotional eating - Which essential aspects of your relationship with food you've been missing and overlooking that need to be addressed so that intuitive eating isn't just a band aid approach for you that doesn't end up working long-term Today's Wellness Woo is peptides. If you've ever felt like your body is fighting you no matter how “perfect” your nutrition or workouts are, this episode will feel like a deep exhale. Today, I'm sitting down with Soraya Rufener, one of our coaches at Vital Spark, to share the story behind the safety, trust, and results her clients feel from day one. Soraya isn't just highly credentialed as a registered nurse and functional health coach. She's lived through chronic dieting, body distrust, and the exhausting pressure to always “do more.” She started dieting at 13, spent years stuck in restriction cycles, and did everything diet culture promised would work. And yet, nothing was actually healing. In this conversation, we unpack why willpower wasn't the problem, how postpartum healing changed everything, and what rebuilding a body really requires physically, mentally, and emotionally. Soraya shares the moment she stopped punishing her body and learned how to support it instead. We talk about why healing is layered, why consistency matters more than intensity, and how nervous system safety changes outcomes. She also opens up about how her lived experience reshaped the way she coaches postpartum moms and high-achieving women today. Most importantly, we explore what she refuses to repeat from diet culture—and why coaching women differently matters. If you're exhausted, frustrated, or quietly wondering why nothing seems to work anymore, this episode will remind you that you're not broken. You're unsupported. In today's episode we're going to talk about about a common concern I hear from women before they start focusing on eating for fertility: What if this morphs into unhealthy obsession/disordered eating? It's a great question and a fair concern. How do we balance the importance of striving for a consistently healthy diet while also maintaining a healthy relationship with food? In today's episode, we're talking all about intuitive eating, and how it can actually go hand-in-hand with eating for fertility. Here's what I break down:Why so many women are afraid that having nutrition targets will automatically turn into food obsessionWhat Intuitive Eating actually is, including the 10-principle framework created by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch for eating disorder recovery, and why it wasn't specifically designed to regulate cycles, treat PCOS, or improve fertilityWhy intuitive eating and fertility nutrition are not opposites, but why nutrition education often needs to come firstHow our cravings, “healthy meal” ideas, and food rules are shaped by upbringing and diet cultureWhy many gut-health habits, like eating enough fiber or fermented foods, are not naturally intuitiveWhy extreme calorie restriction can slow your metabolism and negatively affect ovulationWhy ignoring hunger cues can damage trust with your bodyWhat “making peace with food” really means to me, including letting go of “good” and “bad” food languageHow I personally had to learn to honor fullnessWhy your hormones respond to consistent patterns over time, not one imperfect mealWhy women with PCOS are at higher risk for eating disorders, and the red flags I want you to watch for, like anxiety around social meals, skipping events, compensatory exercise, or obsessive trackingThe difference between intentional, flexible nourishment and punishing, rule-following eatingHow to adjust protein and blood sugar targets when life is hectic without falling into all-or-nothing thinkingAnd why your nutrition plan should calm your nervous system, not stress you out+so much moreConnect with Lauren:Get my FREE PCOS Guide hereJoin the Empowered Path to Pregnancy hereInstagramWork With MeThank you so much for listening to the About Health and Hormones Podcast! The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Why Food Anxiety Is Not Always About Dieting: Understanding ARFID and Intuitive Eating - An interview with Robyn L. Goldberg, RDN, CEDS-C Diet culture often dominates conversations about eating disorders, but not all struggles with food are driven by weight, body image, or dieting. In this episode, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk with registered dietitian nutritionist and certified eating disorder specialist Robyn L. Goldberg about Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), intuitive eating, and how therapists can recognize when food anxiety requires a different clinical approach. Robyn explains how ARFID differs from more familiar eating disorders, why it is often mislabeled as “picky eating,” and when intuitive eating principles need to be adapted or set aside. This conversation offers therapists practical guidance for assessment, referral, and collaboration with eating-disorder-informed dietitians. Key Takeaways ARFID is not driven by weight or body image concerns and is often rooted in sensory sensitivities, trauma, or fear of aversive consequences Intuitive eating is not a one-size-fits-all model and may require significant structure for some clients Rigid food rules and avoidance can be protective for clients but may also limit functioning and quality of life Exposure-based approaches are often central to ARFID treatment and require specialized training Therapists should refer to eating-disorder-informed dietitians when food restriction significantly impacts health or daily life Guest Bio Robyn L. Goldberg, RDN, CEDS-C, is a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified eating disorder dietitian and consultant with over twenty-eight years of experience. She is the author of The Eating Disorder Trap, host of The Eating Disorder Trap Podcast, and a nationally recognized expert featured in major media outlets. Do you ever feel like you're doing everything right all day only to lose control with food the second you walk through your front door? Most people think they have a willpower problem, when they actually have an unmet physical or emotional need. It can be common to feel like you're stuck in a cycle of grazing through the kitchen after a long day of work. Many people try to choose healthy-habit snacks like carrots when they secretly want something sweet, leading to a cascade of overeating. Others are struggling with feeling disconnected from our hunger cues, unsatisfied with their food choices, or decision fatigue. Finding peace with your evening routine is absolutely possible. But instead of searching for more willpower, we want to help you understand what needs your body may be trying to communicate to you. In this episode, you'll learn: Why you experience phantom eating when your actual physical needs are not being met How to build a wind-down routine to transition from a stressful day without a snack spiral The way to identify hidden patterns in your wellness journey to regain a sense of control What it feels like to move away from diet culture and toward true food freedom How mindful eating and satisfying snacks can help you end the cycle of rebound eating We also touch on how decision fatigue contributes to emotional eating and why you must trust the process of learning to listen to your body. Taking these steps will help you prioritize your emotional wellness, and build a more supportive relationship with food. By choosing satisfying snacks and practicing intuitive eating, you can start to trust yourself again in the kitchen. Let's rebrand wellness together! In this episode, I'm joined by fellow Registered Dietitian Shawna Melbourn, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Intuitive Eating Counsellor based in Ottawa, who provides virtual nutrition support for eating disorder recovery, disordered eating, and the aftermath of chronic dieting.Shawna brings such a compassionate, grounded perspective to this conversation as we dive into who eating disorders really affect (hint: it's more people than you might think), the life stages and body changes that can increase vulnerability, and the subtle red flags that often show up before disordered eating spirals into something more serious. We talk about how chronic dieting culture, body changes, and “trying to be healthy” can quietly cross the line — and what both individuals and providers should be watching for.Shawna also shares how she's helping train and mentor other registered dietitians through specialized education programs so more professionals feel confident supporting clients with eating disorders in a safe, weight-inclusive, and recovery-focused way. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who has struggled with their relationship with food or body — and for healthcare providers who want to better support their clients with compassion and evidence-based care. You'll learn:• The most common (and often overlooked) groups affected by eating disorders Early warning signs and life transitions that can trigger disordered eatingHow dietitians and providers can better support recovery without reinforcing diet cultureShawna Melbourn - WebsiteED for RDs: Eating Disorder Education for Registered Dietitians Instagram Facebook

In this fascinating episode of the Compared to Who? podcast, Heather Creekmore is joined by Dr. Brook Sheehan to explore the topic of listening to your body—addressing misconceptions, fears, and spiritual questions that often come up in conversations about health and self-care. Dr. Brook Sheehan shares her powerful personal story, including growing up in a conventional medical model, her diagnosis with cerebral palsy, and her journey to becoming a chiropractor. Through her experiences, Dr. Brook discusses how she moved from ignoring her body’s signals to idolizing health—and finally, to navigating a balanced, grace-filled approach to honoring the wisdom God built into our bodies. Highlights include: The difference between bodily wisdom and New Age thinking from a Christian perspective How tuning into simple “this or that” decisions each day can help rebuild trust with your body Destigmatizing emotional eating and recognizing that body signals aren’t always black and white Practical cues to listen for—like cravings, random sneezing, and dry skin—and how to respond with compassion and wisdom Encouragement for everyone who feels “broken” or out of touch with what their body needs The importance of grace over perfection in both spiritual and physical health Dr. Brook also offers her “Body Signal Decoder” as a valuable resource for listeners who want to decode common body signals from a holistic perspective, covering physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual pillars. Can intuitive eating and weight loss exist at the same time… especially after having kids? In this episode of Nutrition for Mamas, postpartum dietitian Brooke Miller talks with board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Stefanie Reinald about the real, nuanced middle ground between intuitive eating and wanting to lose weight as a mom. If you've ever felt: • Guilty for wanting your jeans to fit again • Confused by anti-diet culture • Uncomfortable in your postpartum body • Afraid to track food but unsure what your body needs • Told you must “accept your body” even when you don't feel healthy This conversation is for you. We discuss: • What intuitive eating actually gets right • Where intuitive eating can miss the mark for moms • Why wanting weight loss is not automatically unhealthy • How nourishing your body can naturally support fat loss • Protein and fiber needs for postpartum moms • Hormones, set-point weight, and metabolism after pregnancy • When tracking food helps vs when it hurts • Why the scale is neutral (but not always helpful) • GLP-1 medications and modern weight culture • How to feel more comfortable in your body today • Healthy motivation vs punishment mindset Dr. Reinald shares clinical insight from working with women with eating disorders, postpartum mental health struggles, and hormone imbalances, along with her personal experience as a mom of four. This episode is Part 2 of our burnout series. Watch Part 1 for burnout, hormones, ADHD in moms, and exhaustion after baby.
If you're curious about intuitive eating but still secretly hoping it leads to weight loss, this episode is for you. Let me be clear: Wanting to lose weight does not disqualify you from intuitive eating. At the same time, trying to use intuitive eating as a weight loss strategy will sabotage the entire process. In this episode, I walk you through the real dilemma so many people get stuck in: being exhausted by dieting, craving peace with food, AND still feeling terrified of weight gain. We'll separate desire from behavior, unpack why weight control feels like safety, and talk about what intuitive eating actually asks of you. We'll also talk about the illusion of control that weight provides, the cultural myths behind it, and why tolerating the discomfort of not controlling your weight is often the missing piece. Most importantly, I'm going to paint you a picture of what life looks like when intuitive eating is actually integrated: eating feels easy, you trust your hunger, movement is gentle and flexible, less body obsession, and your life is no longer tethered to the scale. If you're ready to stop straddling the line between dieting and intuitive eating, this episode will help you understand what's really being asked of you, and why it's worth it even without weight promises. Episode Highlights Why wanting weight loss ≠ practicing weight loss How clinging to the scale keeps you stuck in performative intuitive eating What "set point" really means and why chronic dieting backfires How fear of weight gain interferes with hunger, fullness, satisfaction, and trust What actually changes when intuitive eating is working (hint: it's not the number on the scale) Today's Wellness Woo is creatine. If fat loss feels harder than it should and healing seems slow no matter what you try, the problem may not be your discipline. It may be your nervous system. In this conversation, I explain why a chronically dysregulated nervous system can block healing, fat loss, and hormone balance no matter how perfect your protocols look on paper. Your body is always choosing survival first, and when it perceives constant stress, it will not prioritize digestion, repair, or metabolic efficiency. I walk you through how your brain interprets everyday stress the same way it would a life-or-death threat, keeping you stuck in fight or flight. This is why cortisol stays elevated, inflammation lingers, and progress feels frustratingly slow. I break down why this isn't a mindset issue or a lack of discipline, but a physiological response rooted in your nervous system. We dive into the role of the vagus nerve and how it connects your brain, gut, hormones, and stress response. I explain what vagal tone is and why improving it creates the conditions your body needs to feel safe enough to heal. You'll learn simple, practical vagus nerve–supporting practices you can use daily without adding more overwhelm. We also talk about why these tools are supportive, not magical fixes, and how they enhance everything you're already doing. If you're dealing with stubborn fat loss, gut issues, thyroid challenges, or chronic stress, this episode lays the foundation you may be missing. Nervous system regulation isn't optional or fluffy. It's essential. When your body feels safe, healing becomes possible. Ever feel overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice? One influencer swears by seed oils while another demonizes them. Your feed is flooded with "80 grams of protein" meal challenges, and you're left wondering: what should I actually believe? In this episode, I sit down with Colleen Christensen, registered dietitian, recovering perfectionist, and the compassionate voice behind the wildly popular @No.Food.Rules Instagram account. Colleen shares her personal journey from competitive dietetics student to her struggle with eating disorders, and ultimately to becoming one of the leading voices helping people unlearn decades of diet culture programming. This conversation is a masterclass in cutting through nutrition misinformation. Colleen breaks down why seed oils have become the internet's latest villain, what's really happening with the protein obsession, and why authority bias keeps us trusting the wrong "experts." But more importantly, she shares the one thing that changed everything for her recovery: learning to experiment with food instead of following rigid rules. In this episode, you'll learn:Why reading the headline isn't enough, and how to actually evaluate nutrition studiesThe two biggest nutrition myths getting in the way of normal eating right nowHow to become your own best experiment (and why that's more powerful than any meal plan)Why the education piece matters just as much as the inspirationWhat it really means to find joy in midlife eating, beyond just saying "all foods fit"Connect with Colleen:Instagram: @NoFoodRulesRelated Episodes You'll Love:EP #137: 5 Tips for Spotting Nutrition Misinformation with Dr. Emma BeckettEP #138: 5 Things I Wish I Had Known About Intuitive Eating 10 Years AgoEP #123: You Are More Than What You Eat with Dr. Emma BeckettWhat did you think of this episode? Have you ever felt discouraged by what you see in fitness posts online? A scroll through your feed can quickly stir up body image issues, especially when before and after photos are used as proof of success. But what these photos often leave out is important context like effort, mindset, and overall well-being. In this episode, we take a closer look at the impact of transformation marketing and how it shapes our ideas about health. You'll hear why these visuals often reflect diet culture and social media influence, instead of reflecting what really matters. They rarely capture non-scale victories or signs of emotional wellness and self-worth that are harder to see, but more meaningful over time. We talk about how constant exposure to “ideal” bodies can trigger weight stigma and lead to harmful patterns like weight cycling. These messages can pull you away from intuitive eating, movement that feels good, and even connection with your body. The pressure to chase visual results can chip away at confidence and joy in the process. Instead of relying on narrow ideas of success, we explore what real progress looks like in everyday life. Think strength gains, reduced pain, improved energy, or simply feeling calm in your body. These shifts reflect true health, even if they never show up in a photo. You'll also learn how to step back from harmful messages by doing a digital detox. Curating your feed can create more space for things that align with health at every size, mental health in fitness, and body neutrality, so you can start defining wellness in your own terms. In this episode, you'll learn: What before and after photos miss about your actual progress Why body image messaging in fitness often leads to emotional stress How intuitive eating and body neutrality shift the focus toward self-worth The connection between transformation marketing and weight stigma Steps to reclaim your feed and prioritize mental health in fitness If this episode helped you see fitness culture in a new light, share it with a friend who's ready to ditch the pressure and define progress on their own terms. Send us a textHost: Kendra BeavisGuest: Kayla MacDonald — Author, Podcast Host, Food Freedom & Embodiment GuideIn this episode of Tribe of Unicorns, Kendra Beavis sits down with Kayla McDonald for a grounded, imaginative conversation about food freedom, embodiment, and the power of rewriting the stories we live by.Kayla shares how writing and creativity helped her survive a painful childhood—and how those same tools now support women in building healthier relationships with food, self-worth, and self-expression. Together, they explore why food struggles are often rooted in deeper stories about safety, identity, and being told to shrink, rather than a lack of discipline or willpower. This episode blends lived experience with practical tools, including a playful journaling practice Kayla calls narrative alchemy, designed to make inner work feel lighter, more creative, and more sustainable.
In this episode of the Living Well podcast, host Liv Hill discusses the importance of food tracking as a foundational tool for intuitive eating. She emphasizes that tracking is not a permanent solution but a means to build awareness and understanding of one's body and nutritional needs. The conversation explores the relationship between health and fat loss, the benefits of tracking, and the distinction between triggers and discomfort in the context of food tracking. Liv encourages listeners to reframe their perspective on tracking as a valuable feedback mechanism rather than a restrictive practice.

Struggling with motivation lately? You're not broken and you're definitely not lazy. In this episode, I share a real-time reflection on why motivation feels shaky during seasons of massive identity transition, especially when life, work, and motherhood are all evolving at once. When our identity is clear, action feels easy but when we're questioning who we are becoming, everything can feel heavy and confusing. I break down why motivation is an unreliable driver and why waiting to “feel ready” keeps you stuck. We dive into the three things that actually create follow-through: commitment, identity, and systems. I'll challenge how you think about commitment (with a comparison that might sting a little), and explain why saying you're committed isn't the same as acting like it. We'll talk about how anchoring your actions to who you want to be, not just what you want to achieve, changes everything. I'll also walk through practical ways to reduce friction by building systems that support you on low-energy days. If you're in a season of transition, questioning your next chapter, or frustrated with your lack of consistency, this episode will help you reframe motivation and rebuild alignment. Do you ever feel like you're doing everything “right” with food, but still feel stuck in your body and unsure about your choices? Maybe you've tried to eat clean, count points, or follow the plan, only to feel even more confused or frustrated. In this episode, we open up about the deep impact of diet culture. From childhood restrictions to careers shaped by body expectations, we share how messages around body image, weight, and control shape our choices long before we realize it. This honest conversation explores the roots of disordered eating, the guilt of emotional eating, and the struggle to feel at home in a changing body. You'll hear how cultural pressures and family patterns can shape your choices around eating, increase food obsession, affect your sense of body autonomy, and lower your confidence in making decisions about food and movement. You'll learn how phrases like “clean eating” and “getting your body back” after pregnancy feed into the binge restrict cycle, reinforce weight stigma, and disrupt the ability to connect with your body's needs. If you've ever blamed yourself for a craving or tied your worth to your reflection, this is a safe space to pause and ask why. We share what helped us move toward intuitive eating and how shifting to an anti-diet approach allowed us to find real food freedom. Whether you're navigating life in a post-pregnancy body or just tired of chasing food rules, this episode will remind you that you can support your health without judgment or control. What you'll learn in this episode: How childhood messages around food can lead to lasting patterns What makes a relationship with food feel obsessive or disconnected Why body image pressure shows up differently across life stages How generational beliefs and culture shape your approach to eating What it looks like to shift toward body trust, compassion, and calm If your brain is always spinning about meals or your value feels linked to a number, you're not alone. There's a gentler path grounded in intuitive nutrition, body acceptance, and health at every size. It starts with curiosity, not criticism. Let's rebrand wellness together! In today's episode, I'm sitting down with Krista Moreland, one of our incredible functional health coaches here at Vital Spark, to share her story, her breaking point, and the moment that changed everything. Krista joined our team in early 2025 with over a decade of coaching experience, but her journey goes far deeper than credentials. Before motherhood, she was a two-sport college athlete whose identity was built on discipline, performance, and mental toughness. Then she became a mom, and everything she thought she knew about herself began to shift.Krista opens up about navigating early motherhood while caring for a medically complex baby, including her son's heart surgery at just four months old. She shares the shame, fear, and invisible stress she carried, and how food became her unexpected escape during that season. As a former athlete who had never used food emotionally, this struggle left her feeling confused and lost inside her own body. We talk about the identity shock no one prepares women for, especially high-achieving moms who are used to holding it all together.Krista takes us into the quiet breaking point that happened in her bathtub, where she realized no one was coming to rescue her. That moment wasn't about weight loss, but about choosing herself again. We explore how healing her relationship with food and her body changed the way she showed up as a mom, partner, and woman. This conversation is for any woman who feels like she used to know who she was and is ready to find her way back. Is weight loss truly the path to health? Most of us have been taught that it is, but if you've ever felt uneasy about that narrative, there are valid reasons why. In this episode, we sit down with Evelyn Tribole, co-creator of intuitive eating, to unpack why so many of us feel confused, frustrated, or pressured when it comes to our bodies. Together, we explore how diet culture, misleading medical trends, and misinformation have warped our view of health. You'll hear why true informed consent is critically missing from today's conversations about GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic, and why that matters for your long-term safety. Evelyn explains how tuning into your hunger cues and developing interoceptive awareness are actually the missing keys to real physical and emotional well-being. We also dive into the science of how chronic weight cycling can quietly harm your health more than weight itself. This conversation reveals how nutrition education should be used to rebuild body trust, not destroy it. If you've ever felt caught between taking care of yourself and escaping harmful food rules, this episode offers a new path. Finally, we discuss why a weight inclusive approach, rooted in frameworks like Health at Every Size and body neutrality, is the secret to sustainable health. Tune in to learn how to finally find peace in your food relationship. What you'll hear in this episode: Why intuitive eating is about more than just hunger and fullness How current weight loss trends are ignoring informed consent What your body is trying to tell you through interoceptive awareness How to protect your mental health while pursuing physical well-being Why respect for all bodies must be the foundation of healthcare This episode is about reclaiming your agency in a world that profits from your insecurity. Whether you are navigating complex health choices or simply want to feel at home in your body again, we hope this conversation empowers you to break the cycle of suffering and embrace a more compassionate, evidence-based path forward. Episode Highlights
If you're getting everything done on the outside but feel exhausted, foggy, and feel like giving up on the inside, this episode is for you.High functioning burnout is the state where your nervous system stays on constant alert while your life keeps demanding more.It shows up most often in high achievers like entrepreneurs, corporate women, and medical professionals who are praised for pushing through. In this episode, I break down 18 subtle but powerful signs that your body is stuck between high cortisol and total collapse. We'll talk about why rest feels unsafe, stillness makes you anxious, and productivity comes in extreme waves instead of balance. You'll recognize the patterns of irritability, avoidance, overstimulation, and mental exhaustion that don't look like classic burnout.I explain what's actually happening inside your nervous system when you feel wired but tired, motivated but flat, social yet depleted. This isn't a motivation problem or a discipline issue, it's a regulation issue. You'll learn why pushing harder only deepens the loop and what happens if these signals are ignored long term. We'll connect the dots between chronic stress, dopamine crashes, cortisol dysregulation, and hormonal fallout. Most importantly, this episode will help you name what you're experiencing so you can stop blaming yourself.Burnout doesn't always look like quitting or falling apart, sometimes it looks like functioning too well for too long. If you want your life to feel as good as it looks, this conversation is a wake up call.
