If you've ever felt stuck in the cycle of losing weight, regaining it, and then starting over again, you're not alone. Today we're unpacking yo-yo dieting. Why it happens, what it does to your body, and how to finally break free. Yo-yo dieting often starts with extreme calorie restriction, leading to rapid weight loss that looks successful on the surface. But beneath the scale, your body is losing muscle, becoming inflamed, and stressing your hormones. Inevitably, the restrictive approach becomes impossible to maintain, weight creeps back on (often as fat rather than muscle), and the cycle repeats, sometimes with even greater difficulty losing weight each time. We'll dive into the hidden consequences of yo-yo dieting, from slower metabolism and muscle loss to leptin resistance, where your hunger and fullness hormones stop working properly. This not only makes weight loss harder but also increases cravings, fat storage, and frustration while taking a serious toll on mental health. But it's not all bad news. Breaking free from yo-yo dieting is possible by shifting focus from quick fixes to long-term, sustainable habits. We'll talk about the importance of fueling your body, rebuilding metabolic health, and supporting your hormones with balanced nutrition and consistency. You'll also hear about our client Kayla, who went from eating less than 1,300 calories per day without results, to eating hundreds more, feeling better than ever, and finally seeing her body respond. Her story proves that nourishment, not restriction, is the foundation for lasting health. If you're tired of the yo-yo rollercoaster, this episode will give you clarity, encouragement, and practical steps to move toward real, sustainable change. The new Fit for TV documentary on The Biggest Loser has us fired up. This reality show wasn't just “entertainment,” it reshaped diet culture, fitness, and the way we think about bodies in ways that were harmful, abusive, and dehumanizing. In this episode, we're breaking down why the show was so damaging and what it means for how we approach health today. This documentary was a stark reminder that your body isn't a spectacle, you don't owe anyone a before-and-after picture, and health should never come at the cost of your dignity. In this episode: How The Biggest Loser normalized extreme and unsafe weight loss practices. The ripple effects it created in gyms, workplaces, and wellness programs across the country. Why diet culture about profit, not health. Weighing benefits vs costs of weight loss programs. Red flags to look out for in trainers, programs, and “health” challenges. What compassionate, sustainable, and whole-person wellness actually looks like. This episode is brought to you by Jukestir. Learn more here: https://jukestir.com/ Connect with us! Staying lean isn't about overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight. it's about stacking small, sustainable habits that actually stick. In this episode, we dive into the everyday choices that make the biggest difference when it comes to feeling strong, energetic, and confident year-round. We start by talking about why highly satiating foods are your best friend (especially during those times when hunger seems dialed up) and how minimizing calorie-dense “extras” can keep you feeling satisfied without the crash. From there, we break down the power of a “something over nothing” mentality when it comes to resistance training because it's not about perfection, it's about consistency. You'll also hear why making physical activity a lifestyle is key. Omar shares how Spartan races with his family keep him motivated, I talk about my time riding horses, and we both agree that nothing beats a simple walk. We also unpack the sneaky calories that come from what we drink, why sleep is the real performance enhancer, and how patience and consistency are often the missing ingredients in most fitness journeys. Most importantly, we'll remind you not to obsess over the scale or occasional feelings of heaviness. Progress is much deeper than a number. And when it comes to food, just because it's free doesn't mean you have to eat it. The goal is to choose intentionally, not impulsively. If you've been searching for a realistic, non-extreme approach to staying lean, this episode will give you practical tools and a mindset shift that can last a lifetime. In episode 294 of Fitness & Sushi, we pull back the curtain on one of diet culture's most damaging exports: The Biggest Loser. What looked like “just TV” was actually cultural programming that rewired a generation of women to believe their worth was tied to shrinking their bodies. Contestants were pushed past the point of safety, trainers used shame and abuse as “motivation,” and viewers absorbed it all as truth. The fallout? Broken metabolisms, broken trust in our bodies, and decades of food and body obsession. In this episode — Fit for TV: How The Biggest Loser Broke Us — and How We Heal — you'll learn…

What if your workout had nothing to do with the number on the scale—and everything to do with what your body can do? This week we're joined by Mark Breedon, an online personal trainer who helps women build lasting confidence by getting stronger than they ever imagined. His weight-neutral philosophy shifts the focus away from aesthetics and toward strength, health, and independence because life-changing results aren't just about how you look, they're about what you can do. Mark shares how he went from chasing bigger biceps to falling in love with powerlifting, and how that transformation led him to create a coaching approach free from weigh-ins, before-and-after photos, and body measurements. If eating disorder recovery was just an easy-peasy walk in the woods, picking bluebells and skipping along beautifully curated paths, then you probably wouldn't be listening to this. Although recovery can lead to some spectacular destinations and a whole bucket of inner peace, the initial routes are often bumpy and tangled with weeds and rocks blocking the way. It can feel frankly quite terrifying. This is not to put you off embarking or continuing along the road. In fact, it is to support you in honesty and reality, and to empower you to keep on going. In this episode, I explore 5 bitter truths about eating disorder recovery. I hope that you find it helpful. If you've ever wondered why you keep waking up at 2am, 3am, or right before your alarm goes off, this episode is for you. Middle-of-the-night wake-ups aren't random; they're your body's way of sending signals that something deeper might be out of balance. Instead of brushing it off as “just bad sleep,” we'll break down what your wake-up times might be revealing about your hormones, gut, blood sugar, and more. Think of your sleep like a night shift at a factory. Different departments run on different schedules. If one department has a problem, the alarm goes off at that time. By tracking your wake-up patterns, you can start to see the clues your body is leaving. We'll dive into the most common causes, from blood sugar dips and cortisol spikes, to low progesterone, high histamine, and even liver overload. You'll hear simple analogies like your brain's “glass of wine” being empty without progesterone, or your liver as the night shift cleaner making noise when it's overloaded that make these complex concepts easy to understand. We'll also cover lifestyle factors like blue light, meal timing, hydration, and circadian rhythm, because sometimes the simplest tweaks make the biggest difference. By the end, you'll know how to decode your body's signals, track what's really happening, and take small, sustainable steps toward better sleep. Your body isn't broken. It's communicating. This episode will help you finally understand the messages and reclaim deep, restorative rest. Time Stamps: (1:25) Upcoming Retreat (3:22) Why Do I Wake Up In The Middle Of The Night? Ever feel like your cravings (or impulses) have control over you?In this episode, we're breaking down a simple but powerful process to take back your power without relying on willpower alone. You'll learn how to pause in the moment, understand why the urge is there, and see it for what it really is (hint: you won't explode if you don't give in). I'll walk you through how to write down the urge, your perceived reasons for acting on it, and then uncover the true cost of giving in. From there, we'll make a decision from a slower, clearer place rather than from that instant “must do it now” energy. I'll also share a personal example of how I've experienced this urge loop in my work life, and how simply planning when I'll handle something helps my brain relax. We'll talk about why saying “no” often makes the urge stronger at first and how to ride it like a wave instead of letting it sweep you away. Think of it like handling an angry toddler's tantrum: it feels intense, but it passes. By the end, you'll have a repeatable framework for handling cravings, emotional eating triggers, or even those distracting work pings that derail your focus. This is your guide to breaking the cycle and building self-trust one urge at a time. If you've ever wondered how to truly support your body after coming off birth control or what to do first when you're feeling bloated and sluggish, this episode is for you. In part two of our Q&A series, we're diving into your most-requested questions: going deep on women's health, hormone balance, and big-picture life goals. I share my supplement thoughts post–birth control, why broad advice often backfires without proper bloodwork, and how our FLUSH protocol helps set a strong foundation for healing. We also discuss what most women get wrong before coming to Vital Spark and whether a DUTCH test is worth it while still on hormonal contraception. From there, we get personal: what I would tell my past self, how we're thinking about family 20 years down the line, and even some of my non-profit aspirations for the future. Finally, I break down the first steps to take when you're bloated, fatigued, and don't know where to start so you can stop spinning your wheels and start feeling like yourself again. This one is packed with both strategy and soul. Whether you're here for the hormone hacks, the mindset shifts, or just a little encouragement for your own journey, you'll leave with clarity and practical next steps to move forward with confidence. ARFID is not just a childhood diagnosis. In this episode of Dr. Marianne-Land: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, I am joined by registered dietitian Caroline (Callie) Holbrook, RD, to discuss what Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder looks like in adults and how to navigate food and nutrition in ways that feel safe and supportive. Callie shares her expertise in working with adults with ARFID, highlighting how it often intersects with neurodivergence, sensory sensitivities, and the pressures of adult life such as relationships, work events, travel, and meal planning. We also talk about how shame develops around food, the impact of wellness culture, and why rigid nutritional rules can make ARFID even harder to manage. Content Caution: This episode includes discussions of eating disorders, food-related anxiety, shame, and nutrition planning. Please take care while listening and step away if needed. What We Cover in This Episode: How ARFID presents differently in adults compared to children The role of shame and social pressures in adult ARFID Strategies for building safe foods lists and reducing overwhelm Why processed foods can be a helpful and low-stress option Collaborative, neurodivergent-affirming approaches to nutrition Addressing sensory sensitivities, executive functioning challenges, and interoception Why progress may mean building energy intake and problem-solving around meals instead of immediately trying new foods This episode emphasizes flexibility, autonomy, and creating supportive environments for eating, including practical tips such as adjusting lighting, using sound regulation tools, and using distractions during meals. Why This Episode Matters: Adults with ARFID often feel misunderstood and pressured to eat in ways that do not align with their needs. This episode validates adult ARFID experiences and offers real-life strategies to navigate food safely and respectfully. About Caroline "Callie" Holbrook, RD: Callie is a Registered Dietitian based in San Diego, California. Originally from Alabama, she relocated across the country four years ago. Callie has extensive experience working in various levels of eating disorder treatment, including residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient care. She has long been passionate about the field of eating disorders and has valued every step of her professional journey. Callie recently opened her own private practice in San Diego, specializing in eating disorders, ARFID/selective eating, and Intuitive Eating. If you're wondering how the heck my clients are eliminating overeating and judgmental thoughts, without going on another restrictive diet or giving up their 10pm ice cream…it's because they're rewiring all the sneaky ways diet culture still lives rent-free in their heads. >> It's about learning how to respond when the old patterns come roaring back. >> It's about WHAT TO DO when it's 9pm and you're standing in front of the pantry with zero hunger AND… It's about rebuilding trust with your hunger cues, ditching the food guilt, and embracing a life where dessert isn't a bad word. Which is precisely what I did with my client, whose relationship with food + her body (and her LIFE) changed massively in just under a year…all because she stuck with it when things felt hard. Together, we worked through 4 key areas where she got stuck along the way: 1️⃣

Today I'm sharing my unfiltered thoughts on the “Intuitive Eating” movement. The good, the bad, and the confusing.Because while intuitive eating completely changed my life…There are parts of the online space that don't sit right with me.In this episode, I open up about why the term “intuitive" eating can actually push people away from healing, the nuance I think is missing in mainstream conversations and what I align with me today.
How do you walk away from diet culture when it's all around you? It's not an easy task, but it's so worthwhile for your long-term health and happiness. I sat down with Elizabeth Harris to talk about how to break the toxic cycle of comparison, negative self-talk, and perfectionism that shows up in food, body image, and leadership. It's a heavy topic, but there's so much joy to be found on the other side of it. We're talking about things like how comparison shows up in diet culture, ways to shift your thoughts and conversations away from diet culture, and how to maintain a healthier and happier relationship with food. Elizabeth Harris is a registered dietitian, certified Intuitive Eating counselor, speaker, entrepreneur, and co-host of the Wellness Rebranded podcast. You've been doing “all the right things” for a few weeks. Eating better, moving your body but the scale hasn't budged. Sound familiar? That's not failure. That's normal. In this episode, we unpack the uncomfortable truth: healing and real transformation take time, often much longer than we want. You'll hear why quick fixes and crash diets set you up for disappointment, and why slow, steady progress is the only path to sustainable change. We'll talk about prepping your body before weight loss even begins, what to expect when you start eating more, and why discomfort (yes, including hunger and resistance) is part of the journey. I also share what it took for me to transform over two years and why I still don't believe in a “finish line.” If you're frustrated with your progress or tempted to give up after a few weeks, this episode will reframe everything.
